Tansen Palpa

Tansen Palpa - Travel Guide

Balaram Thapa

Located high above the Kali Gandaki River, Tansen is a beautiful hill station in western Nepal. This historic town is the district headquarters of Palpa, one of the major districts in the Lumbini zone. Lying close to Lumbini and the Indo – Nepal border, Tansen is a popular summer getaway for locals as well as Indian tourists living close to the border. It's cool climate and beautiful heritage sites are a big draw for tourists.

Tansen has a glorious past and a rich cultural heritage. In the bygone days, Tansen was the capital of a powerful Magar kingdom. Later it became one of the major territories of the Gorkhali kingdom. This small town is home to traditional weavers and artisans who create the traditional Dhaka fabric and 'karuwa' (a brass jug with a spout). The Newari traders and craftsmen who migrated from the Kathmandu Valley to Tansen brought with them the arts and crafts of the valley.  Beautiful houses built in the Newari style of architecture adorn the streets of Tansen.

Tansen is also a great destination for those interested in military history. The Palpa Durbar Museum showcases many of the original weapons and military artifacts used by the Gorkhali army during the Anglo-Nepalese war. The fierce fighting spirit of the Nepalese was first noticed by the Britishers during this war.

  • Quiet, peaceful, less crowded and non-touristy
  • Explore the Palpa Durbar Square
  • Hike to Shreenagar Hill and enjoy a panoramic view of the Himalayas
  • Enjoy an excursion to Rani Mahal, the Taj Mahal of Nepal
  • Visit the workshops of Dhaka weavers and 'karuwa' metalsmiths
  • Stroll down the cobbled streets and admire the traditional buildings

Tansen lies in central Nepal in the Lumbini Zone. It sits on the crest of the Mahabharat Range high above the Kali Gandaki River valley. Its geographical coordinates are 27°52′0″N  and 83°33′0″E. Tansen is situated at an altitude of 1350 meters and has a pleasant climate. Lumbini, a major tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site is located only 45 kilometers from Tansen.

By Road: Tansen is connected to the rest of Nepal by the Siddharth Highway. The total distance between Tansen and Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is 300 kilometers. There's no direct public transport service to Tansen Palpa from Kathmandu. One has to catch a bus to Butwal and later get a shared jeep or bus to Tansen. From Butwal it takes about an hour and a half to reach Tansen. Private taxis are also available for hire to drive one all the way to Tansen.

From Pokhara, the distance is 122 kilometers. It takes around four hours to reach the hill station via Syangja. Tansen is only 45 kilometers away from Lumbini.

It takes around two hours’ drive from the airport to reach Tansen, There are regular flights to Bhairahwa from Kathmandu and Pokhara. From Kathmandu, it takes around 25 minutes to fly to Bhairahwa, and from Pokhara, the flight time is 20 minutes.

Palpa used to be a Magar kingdom and Tansen was its capital. The name Tansen is derived from the Magar word 'tamra sen' which means 'northern settlement'. The Magar kings of the Sen dynasty ruled over Palpa for more than three hundred years. They begin their reign in the 15th century when Rudra Sen established the Palpa kingdom in 1493 AD. Palpa was part of a confederation of 24 kingdoms known as Chaubisya Rajya, The Magar kings lost their power after forces of the Shah dynasty defeated the Magar forces and killed their king.

As the Tibet Salt Trade route went through Palpa, it became a major trading hub. Merchants with their caravans from India, Tibet, and China used to stop by this town while traveling through the salt trade route. During this time, some of the Newars from Kathmandu migrated to Palpa and set up their businesses. They brought with them the rich art and crafts of Kathmandu Valley. We can still see the Newari style of architecture in the old houses lining the streets of Tansen,

Tansen, Palpa: City Guide & Photography

Cities in Nepal , Destinations in Nepal / June 2, 2021 by fulltimeexplorer / 5 Comments

Tansen, Nepal is a special city to me because it’s the place my boyfriend was born. I have to say, I was super excited to see it, but I hadn’t done any research before arriving. It didn’t seem necessary since I had a tour guide who was born and raised there. The truth is, I didn’t expect much, but I was blown away by how much there is to do and see. And don’t even get me started on the views! We arrived on a hazy day, and you couldn’t even see into the valley below, but we lucked out. After some rainfall, dust settled and we got crystal clear skies. I’ve never seen the mountains so clearly from so far away! It was kind of insane considering how 24 hours earlier there was no view at all!

Tansen remains off the beaten path for foreign tourists, but it is a destination among locals and those coming from Northern India who want relief from the summer heat. At an altitude just above 1,600m, the climate is gorgeous in the summer. But, I wouldn’t recommend it in monsoon season as landslides are common on the road to get to Tansen. If you are in Pokhara and decide to head to Lumbini, it’s conveniently located in the middle making it the perfect place to stop. I’m honestly not sure why Tansen isn’t a tourist hot spot.

Tansen, Nepal City Map

Brief history of tansen.

Tansen has an interesting history. It was the capital of the Magar Kingdom of Palpa. Nepal used to consist of over 30 kingdoms before it was unified, each with its own king and culture. Magars are one of the oldest ethnic groups in Nepal and are believed to be of Tibetan descent. These hill people were a force to be reckoned with in their heyday. They almost took over Kathmandu at one time. “Tansen” translates to “northern settlement” in the Magar language.

In the 18th century, the Magar lost power and Newars gained some popularity. The city of Tansen became a stop on the trade route from India to Tibet. As recently as 2006, the city was targeted by Maoist due to the government offices in the city. The Maoists even burned Durbar Square to the ground. Since then, it’s been rebuilt and turned into a museum. Tansen is currently on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, making it the perfect time to visit before it becomes popular.

Tansen, Palpa City Guide

Major ethnicity:.

Magar & Newar

Major religion:

Altitude: .

1,659 m ( 5,442 ft)

Location:

130 km (80 miles) southwest of Pokhara or 45 km (28 miles) north of Lumbini

How to get there:

You can take a bus from Pokhara, Lumbini, or Kathmandu. We chose to go from Butwal since we were nearby. From Butwal, you can catch a local bus on the main road and take it straight to the Tansen bus park. It costs about $1.00 USD per person and takes less than 2 hours.

Best time to visit:

March, April & May offer the best weather and views. You can also visit in the winter but it will be a little cold. Monsoon season may not be safe as the roads there are prone to land and mudslides.

Things to do in Tansen

Shreenagar park:.

Shreenagar Park is located just above the city on the top of the hill which makes it the ideal place to get a great view. The forest is peaceful and quiet making it perfect for short day hikes. There’s a small temple at the bottom as well as two statues within the park. One is of Hanuman who is the Hindu monkey-god. He’s known as the god of strength and knowledge. There’s also a Buddha statue. Buddha represents impermanence and enlightenment.

View Points:

There are two major view points in the city. One is at the top of Batasedaada (the small town just next to Tansen) which is a 15-30 minute walk depending on where you are staying in Tansen. On a clear day, you can see a perfect view of the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri. There’s also a view tower in Shreenagar Park. It looks oddly like a lighthouse and seems so out-of-place in Nepal. That being said, it’s only 25 cents to enter and about 125 stairs to the top. We went on a cloudy day and couldn’t see anything. The next morning, we got amazing views from lower than the tower, so I can only imagine how great it looks from there.

There are many temples in Tansen, but the most popular are the Amar Narayan Temple and Shree Rana Ujjeshwori Mandir Temple. The Amar Narayan Temple was built in 1806. It’s believed that older temples were designed to have the same number of foundation layers as there are roofs to help prevent damage during earthquakes. This might explain why some of the taller temples in Nepal survived the earthquake when shorter ones were ruined. The Amar Narayan Temple was built to worship Narayan who is one of the manifestations of Lord Vishnu.

The Rana Ujjeshwori Mandir Temple is interesting to see because it’s a modern temple. I wasn’t able to find much information about this temple. At first, I thought it was really ugly since it’s not built in the traditional style and lacks the beautiful woodwork that most temples in Nepal have. After a while, it began to grow on me. It’s certainly different from all the other temples I’ve seen in the country.

I recommend visiting the Palpa Durbar Square Museum. Most of the information is in Nepali, making it a little difficult for foreigners to understand, but there are a few blurbs written in English. This building looks brand new because it was built after the 2006 attack on the city. Maoists invaded Tansen because it’s the district headquarter for administration. They burnt the original Palpa Durbar Square to the ground. It’s since been rebuilt but in a newer style.

Rani Mahal:

You can take a day trip to the Rani Mahal which is considered the Taj Mahal of Nepal. You can read my post on the Rani Mahal in Palpa for more information.

Things to Do in Tansen, Nepal

Sunrise from Tansen, Palpa. The valley below is covered with clouds, but the sky above is mostly clear. Tansen Nepal.

Now that I’m visiting Nepal for my third time, I’m trying to discover places I haven’t seen before. The tactic seems to pay off. Here’s a story of things to do in Tansen, Nepal.

I originally wrote this blog post about Tansen, Nepal, during my 2-year trip around the world .

Most tourists who come to Nepal visit just a few places. The capital Kathmandu and the valley around it gather a lot of people, and the touristy lake town of Pokhara is extremely popular with trekkers and hippies alike. Besides the historical sites and the mountain panoramas, there’s also the Chitwan National Park where many travelers go for jungle safaris to spot rhinos, tigers and elephants.

Like so many other backpackers, I’ve previously only spent time in Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara and some places in between. Now that I’m venturing a bit further away from the main crowds, I’ve been able to see more of this beautiful country that I love so much. If you plan to witness more than the usual places, I can truly recommend adding Tansen on your Nepal itinerary.

A mountain panorama opens from the lookout tower of Shreenagar Hill.

A mountain panorama opens from the lookout tower of Shreenagar Hill in Tansen, Nepal.

Rooftops of Tansen, Nepal from the roof terrace of a homestay.

The population of Tansen, Nepal, is about 30,000, and all places in the town can be reached by foot.

My First Impressions of Tansen, Nepal

I arrived in Nepal from India by land. My first stop was Lumbini , the sacred birth place of Buddha just an hour away from the border. Tansen was an easy choice as the next destination, as it is located halfway along the road between Lumbini and Pokhara. The five hour bus ride from Lumbini passes through some of the most beautiful road views from the Siddhartha Highway.

Sure, Tansen is not a completely undiscovered gem in the middle of nowhere. It is highly recommended in the Lonely Planet guide, so there are a few Western tourists staying in the town most of the time. Still, what makes Tansen stand out from the lakeside of Pokhara or the tourist ghetto of Thamel (which I’m not a fan of ) in Kathmandu is the fact that Tansen is a normal, living town full of life.

A traditional Hindu festival with people playing instruments in the center of Tansen Nepal.

The day of the festival included plenty of dancing and music around the town.

Cows and a stray dog walking a forest path on Shreenagar Hill.

I went for a walk on the nearby hill and met these local hikers on the path.

I happened to arrive in Tansen, on the eve of a Hindu festival. The celebrations gathered plenty of young people from nearby villages to celebrate in the city. While I didn’t really feel part of the celebrations, it was still interesting to see common residents and hanging out with each other.

The gathering showed how the Nepalese culture is balancing between old traditions and new influences. These days, most young people have started to dress in very similar clothes as Westerners. Both boys and girls wear stylish clothes and have complicated haircuts that make my simple vagabond look seem scruffy in comparison.

The celebrations in the evening didn’t seem all too different from any summer festivities in Finland – the biggest difference was that there was much less drunken misconduct to be seen.

The abandoned Ranighat Palace is eight kilometers away from Tansen, Nepal.

The Views Are Worth the Climb

While Tansen is still far away from the highest mountains of Nepal, the vistas from the town are marvelous. The small city of around 30,000 people is located on the side of a high hill. Because the hill blocks the view to the other side, you can only see the nearby valley and mountains from the town itself.

If you go further up from the town and climb on top of the hill, you’ll be treated with amazing views on all directions. There’s even a new view tower on top of the hill which rises high above the trees. On a clear day, you can spot some of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas in the north. The scenery absolutely amazing.

A woman wallking with a black and white Moomin umbrella in the countryside of Palpa District, Nepal.

I visited Ranighat Palace together with British backpacker Charlotte. The extreme heat of the sun made the 11 hour day trip a bit challenging at times.

Looking down from a rooftop terrace from a table under a sunshade.

The rooftop terrace of City View Homestay was a good spot for writing and chilling in Tansen, Nepal.

My accommodation was in a place called City View Homestay, which is run by retired economy professor Man Mohan Shrestha. Man Mohan is a friendly man full of energy who’s also practically the center of the tourist industry of Tansen. Besides having a homestay, Man Mohan also runs a tourist information center and helps develop the local tourist destinations.

I definitely enjoyed my stay with Man Mohan and his family. I had a nice room on the rooftop terrace with splendid views and Man Mohan was able to give great insights about the Nepalese culture during my stay. As an educated and ever-curious person, he could also analytically compare the differences between Western countries and Nepal.

Besides the people and the hiking tracks, the weather and the nature showed their beauty. On my first night, I was treated with a clear view of the sky. Because there were so few city lights nearby, I could spot more stars in the sky than I’ve ever seen before. A few days later, I also witnessed silent thunder storms above the valley below. The storm that lit the sky in bright flashes of dancing lightning bolts between the clouds had to be one of the most incredible natural phenomena I’ve ever witnessed.

A completely black picture. A failed photo of the sky full of stars.

My best attempt of photographing the sky full of stars. The few light spots you might see by zooming are propably just dead pixels on my camera.

A silent lightning storm with eerie purple light appearing behind dark clouds.

Photographing a silent lighting storm was easier, although the picture doesn’t really show the massive scale of the weather phenomenon

Tansen, Nepal – a Best of Collection

No trip is the same and I can’t guarantee that everyone will enjoy Tansen as much as I do. For my own part, I can say that my experience was definitely a good one. Sure, the Nepalese Wi-Fi once again worked like a dream (read: a nightmare) and I didn’t do much on my last two days, but those were only minor issues.

In a way, Tansen felt like a best of collection of all the thing I love about traveling. The day hikes were almost as nice as in Slovakia (although the routes were much less adventurous), the view from my accommodation almost challenged the one I had in Gokarna, India, and I had some great and deep conversations like the ones I had with my Finnish friend Tino in India .

And while the Hindu festival couldn’t top the magic of Imaginácie, a modern art performance I witnessed on my first night in Košice, Slovakia , the situation felt quite similar.

A foot with a clearly visible sandal tan hanging above a stream.

Cooling my feet on a small stream and admiring my impressive sandal tan. If I don’t start walking barefoot at some point, the tan lines will probably remain for the next two years.

I stayed in Tansen for almost a week, which actually made the longest stay of my trip so far. But something much bigger was just looming around the corner, as I moved to Pokhara to start a three week course of Nepali language .

Unfortunately I now have to admit that I’ve probably failed in one of the goals of my trip. When I started planning this “biggest adventure of my lifetime”, my plan was to travel so much that I’d get bored of it. That way, I could settle down more easily afterwards because I’d loose my interest in exploring the world.

But after Tansen, I just can’t see how I’d ever get enough of this.

Wonders of Nepal

Tansen Palpa

tansen nepal places to visit

Palpa District is not far from Pokhara and easily reached by bus. The ancient hill town of Tansen in this district offers a more tranquil atmosphere where time moves slowly and the laid-back lifestyle is infectious. Walk down the cobbled streets in the old bazaar to discover a way of life quite different from modern Pokhara’s Lakeside. Explore the Shreenagar Hills or go for a day hike to the Rani Mahal, once a vibrant palace on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River.

Tansen showcases some old artistic Newari houses and cobbled streets. Centuries ago, Newar businessmen from Kathmandu arrived in Tansen to trade, bringing with them their art and architecture. The picturesque town of Tansen is the headquarters of Palpa District and the hub of the culture of the mid-west.  The landscape rises from 250m to 2,000m in elevation and is home to diverse flora and fauna.

Although Tansen is dominated by traditional Newari architecture, the district is home to the Magar people, and the name “Tansen” has its origins in the Magar language, meaning “northern settlement.”  Palpa is one of the twelve Magar regions of West Nepal and enjoys a rich, diverse culture and religion. Palpa was the seat of the Sen kingdom that ruled over this region from the 6th century for almost 300 years.

The Magar and the Newar people make up a larger percentage of the population in the district.  The other ethnic groups residing in Palpa are the Brahmin, Chhetri, Bhojpuri, Tharu, Gurung, Tamang, and Limbu.

Newars, originally from the Kathmandu valley, followed opportunities of trade and craft and migrated to different parts of the country. In Tansen, they found an excellent opportunity to trade in the crossroads of trade routes and the administrative headquarters.

The Newar people still make up a high percentage of the population in the core area. The Magars, however, are dominant in some parts of Palpa district and are assumed to be the first settlers of this region.

Dakshinkali Temple

Tansen can be visited at any time of the year with temperatures ranging from a maximum of 28 degrees Celsius in summer to a minimum of 8 degrees Celsius in winter. The region gets its fair share of the monsoon rain during the months of June and July.

Getting There

There are regular buses from Kathmandu to Tansen – 296 km from Kathmandu via Butwal and about 324 km from Kathmandu via Pokhara. You can take a scheduled flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara or Bhairahawa and then drive to Tansen. Tansen is conveniently near Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, and the ever-popular tourist hangout of Pokhara. It is about 3-4 hours drive from either of these cities.

Tourist Services in Palpa

There are a number of best to moderate hotels and lodges in Tansen to suit everyone’s budget and requirements.  They are clean and the staff in most hotels is welcoming. Excellent Nepali meals are served in modern-looking restaurants and some also serve continental cuisine.

1. Visit to Rani Mahal

Palpa is home to Rani Mahal (Queens Palace in Nepali), which honors the General and governor of Palpa; Khadga Shamsher’s love for his young wife Tej Kumari Devi, who died a year before its construction started. Rani Mahal is a remembrance of her and therefore also called the “Taj Mahal of Nepal ”. Its surroundings and ghats beneath the palace which was constructed in 1894 are peaceful and wonderful. Located high above a single huge stone on the east bank of the confluence of the Ridi and the Kaligandaki river, a sacred bathing place for Hindus. Khadga Shamsher couldn’t enjoy its Rani palace for very long. In 1902 he and his family flew to India, after which the palace was abandoned for a long time. Recently the Nepali government restored the Rani Mahal and it is open to the public.

You can reach the Queen’s palace by car or hiking from your homestay in Palpa

Hike to Rani Mahal

Hiking to the above-described Rani Mahal is about a 2-hour mostly downhill walk. The trek from your Palpa homestay to Ranighat will offer you stunning natural beauty, views of mountain ranges, a tranquil waterfall, and breathtaking scenery. Hikers will enjoy the Ranigat trek, which passes through cornfields, rustic hamlets, lush forests, and tiny streams. The walking backup will take about 4 hours, alternatively, you can arrange to be brought back by car to your homestay again.

Hike to Aryabhanjyang

The ridge walks from Bagnaskot to Aryabhanjyang, offering stunning views of Palpa and beyond. Along this hike, you can interact with locals, and see paddy fields and stunning landscapes with green hills and villages. You can either take a bus back from Arya Bhanjyang to your homestay or arrange a pickup.

Hike to the Bhairav Temple

The Bhairav Temple, dedicated to the fierce manifestation of Shiva is a famous temple among pilgrims, who visit the temple to worship and protect mainly on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The Bhairav god in this temple is so powerful that a human being can’t look directly at it. Offerings are made through a priest who worships Bhairav from behind a curtain. It takes about half a day of hiking to reach the temple from your homestay. The temple which is located on a hilltop offers beautiful panoramic views of the mountains. It’s possible to order transport to bring you up so you only have to walk down.

The first coffee farms in Nepal were established in the Palpa Tansen district and are an important economic driver. Farming coffee for more than four decades, Palpa can genuinely be called Nepal’s coffee home. During a  farm visit , you will get insight into how organically grown beans are cultivated.

5. Sightseeing in the old town of Tansen Palpa

As a well-preserved ancient town, Tansen Palpa is a heaven for history and culture lovers with its many temples and old buildings to discover and explore. The old settings with streets full of cobblestones, take you back in time. The most important highlights are Durbar Square with its massive entrance gate, which houses a museum. The white Sittalpati,  a curious octagonal pavilion in the middle of the main square of the town, was built by the same General who created the beautiful Rani palace. The oldest temple of Palpa Tansen, the Bhimsen temple, and the three-tier temple of Amar Narayan Mandir with its skilled wood carvings of deities and erotic postures. The name ‘Tansen’ has its origin in the Magar language, understanding “northern settlement.” Despite its scenic beauties, historical monuments, artistic houses made of old red brick Newari, round the year pleasant weather and moderate climate,Tansen is less featured in the tourists map of Nepal than the neighboring tourists destinations of Nepal: Pokhara and Lumbini. There are several reasons to visit Tansen. The list may be many but 10 are provided below.

The name ‘Tansen’ has its origin in the Magar language, understanding “northern settlement.”

1. because it is there.

A tourist was asked,” Why do you visit Tansen ?” The answer was simple and short,” because it is there.”  This is absolutely true. Tansen exposes to those who travel. Tansen is essentially a beautiful hill station and picturesque town with round the year pleasant climate. Simply reach there; see and experience by yourself.

2. One of the best climates in Nepal

Tansen boasts one of the best climates in Nepal on account of its location in the hill. The climate is moderate to warm with temperatures between 28 degree Celsius maximum during summer and 8 degree Celsius to the minimum in winter. When the people in Bhairahawa and Butwal, two cities located at 39 km and 61 km, respectively to the south of Tansen are sweltering under the scorching sun of summer, the people in Tansen   enjoy cool and gentle breeze. Tansen can be visited at any time of the year. So, if you have arrived Bhairahawa via India or from Chitwan National Park; completed the tour of Lumbini the same day and have 3 hour left for evening you may plan to travel to Tansen and spend days in the mild climate to avoid hot weather of the plain.

3. Nearest place to view the Himalaya

Tansen is the nearest hill station from India boarder to come and have the closet and clearest view of Himalaya from Kanjirowa in Dolpa to Ganesh Himal near Kathmandu in a good weather day. If you have arrived Bhairahawa over land from India or by air and have enough time to visit Lumbini on the same day in the hot rainy season, Tansen would be your best choice to stay a couple of days — over night and experience the moderate climate of a   finest hill town in Nepal .

4. Convenient location

The scenic town, Tansen is conveniently located mid way between the most popular tourist destination Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha and Pokhara, the famous tourist destination. Tansen provides travelers respite from the scorching heat in Lumbini and have firsthand experience of coolness of Nepal’s mountain before making onward journey to other tourist destination of Nepal.

5. Cool climate and serenity

If you are in the last leg of the tour of Nepal and have a plan to visit Lumbini on the way to India, Tansen is the right place to pass some days and experience the cool climate and its serenity.  You would certainly enjoy sleeping in the cool air of Tansen and prepare to plunge into the hot weather of Nepal and India in the plain. Accommodations are available in Tansen, from simple home stay to hotel at the standard for better tourism, serving both local and continental meal at reasonable price.

6. ‘Darjeeling’ of Nepal

On account of its location on the crest of Mahabharat range, Tansen is often compared with Darjeeling, the popular hill station of India for its round the year pleasant weather and the panoramic view of Mt. Kanchajunga (8,586m), world’s third highest peak. Tansen offers the enchanting view of Dhaulagiri (8,163m) and Mt. Annapurna (8,091m), two among the world’s 14 peak over 8000m. From the Shreenagar Hill.   Visitors who have not yet visited Darjeeling for some reason may wish to experience the similar charm in Tansen.

7. View the two facet of Tansen; from within and outside

As Tansen is beautiful from inside, it looks equally scenic from the surrounding hills of different height. Tansen appears to be nestling solitarily on the lap of Shreenagar under the blue sky and against the mighty Himalaya range like Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Lumjung, Manaslu, etc., in the back ground. The view of Tansen is magnificent from Telgha hill, Mahsyam, Kaode ko Lake in the south during the crispy winter. The Madan Pokhara village in the same direction provides good view of Tansen.  From here, Tansen shapes like a fish in the evening.

8. A heaven for solitude seekers and nature lovers

Solitude seekers shall love rolling hill with the billowing clouds drifting to Tansen and engulfing it on and off several times a day provides complete respite from the hustle bustle of an urban life.  Tansen lie above the cloud in the cold-winter morning when thick layer of the white mist hangs over the Madi valley to the south-east of the town; thus earning its name as the ‘White Lake’ of Tansen.

9. Experiencing the unmatched hospitability

Visit and experience the unmatched hospitality of Palpali people.  Tansen is one of the cultured towns of Nepal and renowned for its hospitality. The culture is nurtured by age long affinity of its inhabitant with the great scholars and noble rulers. Palpali are chatty and would volunteer to show the tourists the direction to the Tansen’s major attractions. The tourism service providers place high value on satisfying the guest with their smile while offering traditional and unmatched hospitality.

10. Experience the Kathmandu

Once the most powerful Kingdom, Palpa is the last State to unify into the Greater Nepal in the 17 th  Century. After unification, Commanders from the Rana rulers were deputed from Kathmandu to Palpa. The close aids and executives with commerce minds came along with the Commanders from Kathmandu valley. These people settled in Tansen and named some streets after their counterpart in Kathmandu. They built houses and buildings with red bricks designed in the traditional Newari style of Kathmandu Valley.   You can see these houses in Tansen still intact and in their original form. The Newars of Palpa still celebrate festivals and observe many traditional rituals with more colorful as much as by their relatives back in the Kathmandu valley.  Thus, Tansen earned nicknamed as  ‘the Brother of Kathmandu.’
