The Intricate Hair and Makeup Artistry Behind Deep Space Nine’s Haneek

C reating the appearance of Haneek, a Skrreean character on “Star Trek,” required an exceptional combination of hair and makeup expertise. The comprehensive process, crafted by “Star Trek” veteran makeup artist Michael Westmore, demanded early mornings and lengthy preparation for actress Deborah May.

May’s transformation into Haneek involved the meticulous application of a thin film, adorned with a rough texture akin to sand, glued to her face. It was constructed to appear as if the Skrreean skin was continuously flaking, a detail highlighted when May echoed the potential for bits of the ‘sand’ to be removed. Adding to the complexity, her hairdo integrated three distinct wig sections.

“My mornings started quite early, often spending over two hours in makeup. The combination of three wigs alongside layers of latex, gravel, and potentially cardboard granted Haneek that distinctive peeling look. Shedding the makeup at day’s end was equally involved. A 15-minute shower was necessary to amass a ‘bubble’ under the makeup before you could peel it gradually from forehead to chin. It was certainly a challenge for anyone prone to claustrophobia,” May recalled.

Within the “Deep Space Nine” series, such elaborate makeup was not unusual. It was commonplace for series staples, including Quark (Armin Shimerman), Odo (René Auberjonois), Ferengi, Cardassians, Klingons, Founders, and Jem-Hadar characters to also don full-face prosthetics and elaborate disguises. Westmore achieved new heights in his makeup artistry each week.

May’s liaison with “Star Trek” continued beyond Deep Space Nine, re-emerging in an episode of “Voyager” titled “Favorite Son,” where she portrayed Lyris, a Taresian convincing Ensign Kim (Garrett Wang) of his alien heritage. The “Star Trek” franchise has consistently maintained a supportive environment for its guest and supporting actors—even though their makeup and hair requirements might be quite strenuous.

FAQs about Deep Space Nine’s Haneek Makeup and Hair

Who was responsible for the Skrreean makeup on Haneek?

Michael Westmore, the renowned “Star Trek” makeup artist, designed the Skrreean makeup.

How long did it take to apply Haneek’s makeup?

Deborah May spent over two hours each morning in makeup to transform into Haneek.

What materials were used to create Haneek’s shedding skin effect?

The makeup team used layers of latex, gravel, and possibly cardboard to create the shedding skin effect for Haneek.

What process was involved in removing the makeup?

Removal required standing under a shower for at least 15 minutes to form a water ‘bubble’ under the makeup, followed by slowly peeling it off.

Did Deborah May appear in other “Star Trek” series besides “Deep Space Nine”?

Yes, she later appeared on “Star Trek: Voyager” in an episode titled “Favorite Son.”

Michael Westmore’s mastery in makeup artistry, paired with Deborah May’s dedication to her character, resulted in the memorable portrayal of Haneek on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” The process behind the Skrreean’s look is a testament to the creativity and painstaking detail that “Star Trek” puts into bringing alien species to life. With extensive preparation times and challenging removal procedures, the art of alien makeup on “Star Trek” remains an underappreciated yet integral part of the show’s storytelling magic and visual splendor.

Discovery's Final Episode Breaks an Infamous Star Trek Curse

Stick the landing.

Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham.

The finale of Star Trek: Discovery was given the impossible task of concluding Season 5’s 10-episode story while also serving as a capper for the entire show and wrapping up a handful of Short Treks anthology episodes. But while Trek series finales can be a mixed bag, Discovery fans can rest easy. Its series finale, “Life Itself,” manages to stick the landing. Here’s a spoiler-free look at why you can’t miss the Discovery finale, which makes for an impressive but concise balancing act that ends the show with confidence and class.

While the series finales of The Next Generation (“All Good Things...”) and Deep Space Nine (“What You Leave Behind”) were generally well-received, not all Star Trek series finales have been compelling. 2023’s Picard finale was a slam-dunk, but it was an extension of The Next Generation. The Original Series and The Animated Series didn’t have planned finales and just stopped on somewhat random episodes. Opinions are divided on the Voyager finale, “Endgame,” but Chakotay and Seven’s sudden romance is unrealistic, and Janeway’s time paradox story feels like a retread of “All Good Things...” Most infamously, the 2004 Enterprise series finale is considered a bad finale and perhaps one of the worst Trek episodes ever, as it focuses on guest stars dragged in from Next Gen instead of its own cast.

So making a good finale to wrap up a Star Trek series isn’t exactly a high bar to clear. The circumstances surrounding Discovery’s series finale are an odd combination of the planned finales for TNG, DS9, and Voyager, and the unexpected conclusions to TOS, The Animated Series, and Enterprise . Thankfully, that cocktail seems to be effective.

It’s no secret that the final episode of Discovery wasn’t planned to be the series finale. Nearly a year after Season 5 finished shooting, it was decided that Discovery would come to an end. And so, while the season was being edited, showrunner Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman created an extended coda for Episode 10. As reported back in 2023 , Discovery was given “additional filming to help craft a conclusion for the series.” Discovery’s last episode was retroactively transformed into a series finale.

While hardcore fans might be able to see where the original season ending and new series ending were glued together, the finale is still extremely satisfying. Nothing about “Life Itself” overstays its welcome, nor does it feel like the story of Michael Burnham and the Discovery crew is being short-changed. It’s actually hard to imagine what certain characters would have done afterward had there been a Season 6. The final moments do hint at stories that could be explored in future Trek series, and the Final Frontier's distant future is still in flux. But when faced with the task of wrapping up an epic action-adventure series set inside a sprawling franchise, Discovery’s finale does it all with grace.

The Star Trek: Discovery finale, “Life Itself,” hits Paramount+ on Thursday, May 30 at 3:00 AM EST.

Leonard Nimoy’s son reveals how tragedy transformed his relationship with ‘Star Trek’ actor

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Adam Nimoy’s relationship with his father, Leonard Nimoy, was healed through heartbreak.

Adam, 67, writes in his upcoming memoir, “The Most Human: Reconciling with my Father, Leonard Nimoy,” that for decades he was either barely speaking to his dad or completely estranged.

But when Adam’s second wife was diagnosed with cancer, the “Star Trek” actor stepped up to the plate.

Adam Nimoy.

“He was the go-to guy, which was absolutely unthinkable just a few years before. I would never have called him. Never. I didn’t call him when I broke up my marriage of 18 years and I moved out of my house, leaving my two kids,” Adam tells Page Six exclusively.

“[But] my dad became the dad that I always needed but never really had. So it was a very transformative experience.”

The author says their relationship began to improve a few years earlier when the actor, who died in 2015 at the age of 83 , sent his son a letter listing all of Adam’s deficiencies.

Adam Nimoy.

Although they were both sober at the time, Adam says that his father was not taking accountability.

“He was sober but not necessarily in recovery,” Adam explains. “He did not take his own inventory. He took my inventory and that’s kind of a no-no.”

Adam admits his first impulse was to blow up at his father but a friend showed him another way.

His friend advised him to take his own inventory and make amends with his father while letting go of the resentment he had toward him.

“He immediately invited me to a Shabbat dinner the following Friday at his house,” Adam recalls.

Their strained relationship started in Adam’s childhood amid his father’s immense fame for his role as Spock.

“It’s tough to fight with a guy who’s got millions of fans all over the world who just think he’s amazing,” Adam says. “And then I come along and say, ‘I got news for you. You’re human just like the rest of us. And you make mistakes.'”

Leonard Nimoy with his son Adam Nimoy attend an event in 1966.

He describes their mended relationship “a relief” and “a lovely thing,” which was cemented with their work on the 2016 documentary “For the Love of Spock” about Leonard’s life.

“It was a way for me to honor my father,” Adam says. “And it was a way for him to really look at where he had come from and what he had done in his life.”

“The Most Human: Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy” is out June 4.

Adam will be at the Barnes & Noble on the Upper West Side on June 6 and Bookends in New Jersey on June 7.

Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham standing on the bridge in a still from Star Trek Discovery

The week has barely started (if you’re in the U.S. and reading this on the Monday holiday: even less so!), and already there’s a whole lot of TV to get through.

With any luck, the long weekend gave you some time to catch up with things — after all, as our summer preview is any indication, there’s only gonna be even more coming soon. But while a bunch of new stuff might be coming up, there’s plenty to watch this week alone. Under the Bridge and Hacks are both wrapping up really strong seasons, while shows like Pyramid Game and We Are Lady Parts are just ramping up.

Here are all the best new TV premieres and finales this week.

New shows on Netflix

Genre: Drama miniseries Release date: May 30, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Abi Morgan Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Gaby Hoffmann, and more

Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a puppeteer happily living and working in 1980s New York City. Then, his 9-year-old son goes missing on the way to school, plunging Vincent into a dark, volatile depression. Vincent believes his son will come back if only he can get Eric, a monster based on a drawing his son did, to the screen.

Genre: Teen show Release date: May 30 Based on the book by: Holly Smale Cast: Emily Carey, Sarah Parish, Emmanuel Imani, and more

Harriet (Emily Carey) is just another geek trying to get by in high school, even if it means brushing off some mean girl bullies to do it. But everything changes when — against the odds and Harriet’s wishes — she finds herself scouted to be the next hot supermodel.

New shows on Hulu

The veil season finale.

Imogen (Elisabeth Moss) kneeling behind a car with a gun out

Genre: Spy thriller Release date: May 28 Showrunner/creator: Steven Knight Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Yumna Marwan, Josh Charles, and more

The stage is set in London for a deadly attack. But Imogen (Elisabeth Moss) and Adilah (Yumna Marwan) are also on the move. And with Imogen keeping her master plan secret from even us, it seems likely that this attack could go either way.

Under the Bridge finale

Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in a still from Under the Bridge

Genre: True-crime mystery Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creator: Samir Mehta, Quinn Shephard Cast: Lily Gladstone, Riley Keough, and more

There’s nothing about the murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) that feels easy to swallow, and it’s a testament to Under the Bridge that the show has been able to balance the complexities of that reality in its seven episodes so far. Now, it’s coming to a close — one that no doubt will carry the weight of every ounce of tragedy in this story.

New shows on Max

Hacks season 3 finale.

Deborah (Jean Smart) sits smiling with Ava (Hannah Einbinder) on the arm of her chair in a still from Hacks

Genre: Comedy Release date: May 30 Showrunner/creator: Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky Cast: Hannah Einbinder, Jean Smart, and more

It’s all happening for Deborah (Jean Smart), now that she finally got her dream of hosting a late-night show. Only suddenly, there’s some last-minute doubt: Will Ava (Hannah Einbinder) be allowed to come along for the ride?

New shows on Paramount Plus

Pyramid game.

Genre: Thriller Release date: May 30, with all 10 episodes Showrunner/creator: Choi Sui Cast: Bona, Jang Da-a, Ryu Da-in, and more

Seong Su-ji is a new student at the Baekyeon Girls’ High School, and everything is already feeling like a fight for survival as she battles bullies and studies alike. And then she’s introduced to a new ranking system that lets people secretly vote for who they think should be a class outcast. Now, Su-ji has to decide whether to keep going along (and possibly accepting the violence that comes with it) or else lead an uprising against this shadowy “Pyramid Game.”

Star Trek: Discovery series finale

L-R Alfredo Narciso as Ohvahz and Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery. They are wearing hand-made alien garments, and conversing calmly while sitting on the floor in a stone room.

Genre: Star Trek Release date: May 30 Showrunner/creator: Akiva Goldsman Cast: Sonequa Martin-Green, Mary Wiseman, Doug Jones, and more

The end of an era! By which I mean not only the season we got of 900 years in Star Trek’s future, but also Discovery , which wraps up this Thursday. It’s the end of the first Star Trek show of the modern era, and is free in a way Star Trek hasn’t been in a long, long while , all while paving the way for more Trek to come.

New shows on Peacock

We are lady parts season 2.

Genre: “Yeah, I’m in a band” teen comedy Release date: May 30, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Nida Manzoor Cast: Anjana Vasan, Sarah Kameela Impey, Juliette Motamed, and more

We Are Lady Parts is back and ready to record their debut album. Which means it’s the perfect time for more bandmate shenanigans — including battling a rival Muslim band, playing a festival, exploring your “villain era.” All that and Malala Yousafzai is supposed to show up sometime this season!

New shows on Apple TV Plus

Loot season 2 finale.

Genre: Comedy Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creators: Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard Cast: Maya Rudolph, Joel Kim Booster, Nat Faxon, and more

The Wells Foundation — and Molly (Maya Rudolph), the billionaire woman who runs it — are nearing their greatest success yet. Which, of course, means reality is about to come crashing in with some major personal decisions. How will the dust settle in the season 2 finale?

New shows on Showtime

Couples therapy season 4.

Genre: Documentary series Release date: May 31, with one episode; on-air premiere at 10 p.m. EDT on June 2 Showrunner/creator: Dr. Orna Guralnik Cast: Real-life couples in therapy

It’s a new season of Couples Therapy, and an all-new cast of couples to undergo real therapy with Dr. Orna. The result will be unpredictable — couples therapy, after all, is about figuring yourselves out together, not necessarily saving the relationship. The good news? It will most likely be cathartic, one way or another.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard Unveils “Natural” Hair Transformation

Months after gypsy rose blanchard debuted blonde hair, the 32-year-old—who was released from prison in december—returned to her brunette roots..

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is returning to her roots, literally.

The 32-year-old, who debuted blonde hair earlier this year, revealed in a new selfie that she's returned to her original brunette locks.

As she wrote in a June 3 Instagram post, "Went back to my natural."

In addition to returning her hair back to its original color, Gypsy also cut a few inches off—as her hair now falls just beyond her shoulders. She also showed off a ‘K' necklace, which is likely a tribute to her current boyfriend, Ken Urker .

Since her prison release in December, Gypsy has undergone several beauty transformations, including dying her hair and getting a nose job. And while she only just went blonde in January, she's not one to shy away from returning to unfinished business.

After all, the Life After Lockup star returned to Ken, her old flame, shortly after filing for divorce from her estranged husband Ryan Anderson —who she tied the knot with in 2022. But for Gypsy, the relationship with Ken is definitely not a rebound.

"When did I know he was the one? Probably the day I met him back in 2017," she explained to E! News in an interview late last month. "And we've grown a lot. I've matured. He's grown. And so I think right now is the time in our lives that it's the right time, right place, right everything."

Gypsy—who served eight years of a ten-year sentence for second degree murder of her mother Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard —first connected with Ken and Ryan through a pen pal system while in prison.

Although the former inmate and Ken dated for two years, and even got engaged, they eventually split in 2019. Later, Gypsy moved on with Ryan, but the duo hit a rough patch in March, which eventually led to their separation.

And while Gypsy's decision to return to Ken took her fans, and even Ryan, by surprise, she continues to follow her heart after her prison release.

"After reconnecting earlier this month, we realized that our love for each other is simply undeniable, and life is too short to not take a chance," Gypsy told TMZ of her relationship with Ken April 30. "We have a history that made for the perfect foundation for a new beginning."

To revisit Gypsy's post-prison journey, keep reading…

"First Selfie of Freedom!"

After being released from prison on Dec. 28, Gypsy Rose Blanchard snapped her first Instagram selfie.

Gypsy and husband Ryan Anderson   shared a glimpse into their new era together.

"Sister Love"

Gypsy also ended 2023 with an Instagram selfie.

Red Carpet Debut

Gypsy and her husband walked their first red carpet at the premiere of her Lifetime docuseries The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard .

Gypsy and Ryan kissed on the red carpet at the premiere.

In late March 2024, three months after her prison release, Gypsy shared that she and Ryan broke up .

"People have been asking what is going on in my life," she wrote in a statement on her private Facebook page, according to People . "Unfortunately my husband and I are going through a separation and I moved in with my parents home down the bayou."

Days later, Gypsy was spotted out with her ex-fiancé Ken Urker . He said that the two are "just hanging out as friends."

Physical Transformation

Gypsy underwent a rhinopasty and septoplasty (nose job) April 5, 2024. Her physical transformation is set to be documented on Lifetime's Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up in June 2024.

Gypsy filed for divorce from Ryan on April 8, 2024, according to court documents obtained by TMZ. The filing came nearly two years after their July 2022 prison wedding.

Gypsy's Tribute to Her "Soulmate"

In late April 2024, weeks after filing for divorce from Ryan Anderson , Gypsy announced she has gotten back together with ex-fiancé Ken Urker . The following May, she makes their rekindled romance social media official by sharing a video montage of their romantic moments on TikTok.

In her video, Gypsy described her love story with Ken Urker "legendary."

The Burning Question

And when a fan, using her own past comments about ex Ryan Anderson , took the oppotunity to ask her in the comments a NSFW question about Ken, Gypsy responded quickly and candidly .

Seven of Nine Just Delivered Star Trek's Sickest Burn

Star trek confirms doctor phlox's fate centuries after enterprise, star trek confirms captain shaw's story isn't over.

On   Star Trek: Voyager  Captain Janeway had an impressive array of hairstyles during the course of the show, something actress Kate Mulgrew has attributed to the producers' anxieties about her character being Star Trek's first female captain. Star Trek: Voyager , which premiered in 1995 and ran for seven seasons, broke several barriers for the franchise in terms of representation. The cast was one of the most diverse of any Star Trek series to date, featuring many people of color and female main characters, including of course Captain Janeway .

Janeway was and continues to be an inspiration to many women who were finally able to see the representation of a strong female lead in their favorite franchise. Actress Kate Mulgrew played the character with the dignity the role deserved, imbuing Janeway with gravitas while not shying away from showing her vulnerability when the situation called for it. Being the first female captain however meant that Janeway and Mulgrew were subjected to much scrutiny by fans, and according to Mulgrew, much anxiety on the part of Voyager's producers. This anxiety apparently manifested as concern about Janeway's appearance, and more specifically her hair.

Related: Star Trek Voyager: Why Janeway & Chakotay Never Became A Couple

Star Trek: Voyager fans will know that over the course of the show's seven seasons, Janeway sported an impressive array of hairstyles. For most of the first 3 seasons, Janeway wore her hair long and in some sort of updo, which included her iconic bun or an elaborately styled ponytail. Starting about midway through season 4, the long hair vanished to be replaced with a short bob that remained Janeway's style through the end of the series. While the bun and the bob are perhaps Janeway's most iconic hairstyles, the character was subjected to just about every other hairdo in between, including a french twist and a slightly longer version of the later bob.

While Janeway's hair is seen as a source of humor among some fans, Kate Mulgrew has stated that the changes were not only a nuisance for her but also indicative of the deeper issues Voyager's producers were having in attempting to craft Janeway as an appropriate  Star Trek  character . Janeway's appearance, including her hair, was the issue where Mulgrew felt the producers were channeling all of their anxieties about how the character would go over with fans, especially in early seasons. The focus on how Janeway looked, rather than her character development, was what gave rise to the sheer amount of different hairstyles the character was subjected to. As Janeway's character developed naturally throughout the show, however, the powers-that-be began to relax after seeing that fans had a generally favorable opinion of her, and the character was allowed to keep a single (practical and no-nonsense) hairstyle for longer than a season or two.

While Mulgrew has indicated that she thinks the obsession with Janeway's hair is perhaps indicative of a larger problem about women always being judged on their appearance no matter the capabilities, the ever-changing hairstyles luckily did not undermine Janeway's character too much. With the help of Mulgrew's acting abilities and the eventual assuaged fears on the part of the producers, Janeway was still able to develop into the icon she continues to be today. Star Trek: Voyager  benefitted greatly from Janeway at the helm, and her hairstyles have become just one more quirk of her character that fans still enjoy discussing to this day.

Terok Nor and Leeta as they appear in the Mirror Universe

Mirror universe is the unofficial designation for the parallel universe the Terran Empire and the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance originate from. In contrast to the "prime" universe, the course of history has taken a different turn early in Earth 's history (and possibly other planets as well). Humanity has not risen to be a respected member in an interstellar alliance of equals , but a totalitarian regime oppressing other races by brutal force.

History [ | ]

No date of divergence between the Prime timeline and the Mirror universe has been established, although it is likely it dates back to the 16th century, if there is one, with the Terran Empire dating back to at least the 20th century.

Humanity's First Contact with an alien race still took place with the Vulcans in 2063, although in this timeline Zefram Cochrane shot the Vulcans and the humans seized the Vulcan ship and its technology. The Terran empire rapidly spread across the stars, conquering Vulcan , Andoria , Tellar Prime , Bajor Denobula, and Gorlan by the 22nd century.

Humanity's conquered races began rebelling against the Empire, but its rule was saved by the displaced U.S.S. Defiant , from the Prime Universe's 23rd century. Using the advanced technology from the future, the Empire was able to conquer all of known space, including rendering Qo'noS uninhabitable.

In 2256 , the U.S.S. Discovery and I.S.S. Discovery swapped places, although the I.S.S. Discovery (along with a small Klingon fleet) was also displaced in time, sending it to 2410 . It was returned to 2256 , in the prime universe, shortly before it was destroyed by Klingons; however her captain remained at large in 2410 .

In 2267 , a transporter accident swapped James T. Kirk with his counterpart. The influence of the Prime Universe Kirk on the Mirror Universe Spock led to Spock taking control of the Empire and reforming it to peaceful and benevolent. This however led to a weakening of the empire and allowed the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance to rise to challenge it. The Klingon-Cardassian Alliance eventually conquers the entire Empire by the mid-24th century with the former Terran rulers reduced to slaves. Bajor later joins the Alliance.

Over the 2370s , people from the prime universe make a number of "crossovers" between the realities and begin a chain of events that lead to the Terran slaves of Terok Nor rebelling against the Alliance and re-take Terok Nor. The Rebellion manages to steal the plans for the U.S.S. Defiant and construct the I.S.S. Defiant . Combined with a stolen Klingon cloaking device, the Terrans manage to fight off Alliance forces.

By the 25th century , the Alliance has fallen to a newly reformed Terran Empire. It is as totalitarian as before and, while it allows non-Terrans such as Leeta to serve in its ranks, it still maintains a highly xenophobic attitude towards them and outsiders. It also begins incursions into the Prime Universe, forging an alliance with the True Way . The Orb of Possibilities , taken from the mirror universe at an unknown time, is returned to mirror Bajor, aiding the rise of Captain Leeta .

In 2410 , the Mirror Universe's history is altered significantly when Admiral Leeta defeats the Iconians 200,000 years in the past and takes challenges the Emperor's power using a combination of future technology from the Temporal Liberation Front and aid from the Pah-wraith .

In 2411 , the Terran Empire in the Mirror Universe has further expanded their diversity with Kuumaarke , a Lukari captain, and an Alliance captain , serving their ranks. Later on, after the disappearance of Emperor Crusher, Admiral Leeta seems set to become the new Empress - however, the Borg of the Mirror Universe also begin to launch an assault on numerous realities using reality vortices.

  1. Updates to Hair and Skin Textures

While I was updating all the old hair shaders in STO I spent a little extra time to make the hair look better. I added anisotropic specular and made the hair color affect the specular color. I also adjusted how the fresnel and light bleed affected the hair color. This should make the hair look softer and more natural. After I finished the hair I updated the skin shader to make the characters ...

  29. star trek

My wife recently accused me of trying to grow a "Riker" beard. I found myself arguing that my beard is longer than anything Riker or Worf ever had on the show, and that got me thinking as to what would be considered "in regs" for Starfleet officers. And not just humans! Someone in the bureaucracy had to come up with standards for every new species that passed cadet training.
