SUPERSTAR VIRGO: Cruise Guide for First-Timers (What to Expect)

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Packing & Pre-Trip Preparations

star cruises manila

  • First things first, travel documents. If you’re joining the Manila-Laoag-Kaohsiung-Hong Kong cruise, no visas needed. You only need to bring your passport and a photocopy of its bio page.
  • It’s a cruise so it wouldn’t hurt to dress up and achieve your #OOTD goals. We packed at least 2 sets of garments a day: one set of light clothes for touring, and another for the evening shows. Why two sets? It’s pretty cool inside the ship, but things change as soon as you get out of it. In our case, it’s the middle of April! Onboard, I’m clad in shorts and a t-shirt with a polo on top of it. But as soon as we go outside, I had to remove the polo because it would get too hot especially on Ilocos and Kaohsiung stops. Hong Kong was a different story. It rained so hard for a brief moment. Takeaway: check the weather in every stop and prepare accordingly.
  • The rooms are also equipped with slip-on sandals, bath robes, and toiletries. You will also be provided a see-through plastic pouch wherein you can put your passport and access card (which I will explain later).
  • Remember: Each passenger is allowed only one piece of check-in luggage free-of-charge. Anything more will incur additional fees.
  • For the Manila season, the default currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD).

star cruises manila

  • In many ways, the process is similar to that at the airport. You still need valid travel documents, check in your baggage, and pass through an immigration inspection and security checks before boarding.
  • You will be given a mag card (access card). DO NOT LOSE IT. It’s the most important item as soon as you step into the ship. It serves as your keycard to your cabin and credit card when purchasing something or dining at specialty restaurants. You will also need this when disembarking to explore the ports and when returning to the ship.
  • You will need to surrender your passport upon boarding. You’ll have it back after the journey.

Safety Drill

As soon as everyone is settled, there will be a safety drill that you are required to participate in. It is extremely important that you are familiar with the ship’s geography and the directions you need to take in case of an emergency.

star cruises manila

In Manila, the drill happens right before sunset, so as soon as it’s over, head straight to Deck 12 to have a better view. We’ve been to a lot of places around the world, but Manila offers some of the most spectacular sunsets.

Do it at every stop. Nothing is more relaxing that just watching the sun call it a day.

3 Inclusive Restaurants

“Inclusive,” meaning you can dine here free-of-charge. It’s part of what you paid for. Onboard the Virgo, there are three inclusive dining options:

  • Mediterranean Buffet . The most popular, located on Deck 12, just behind the Parthenon Pool. Serves breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper. No reservations needed.
  • Genting Palace . Western and Chinese cuisines. Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is also where the Gala Dinner takes place. Although it is inclusive, reservation is required.
  • The Pavilion Room . Family-style restaurant. In my opinion, of the three, this is the best. Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Reservations required.

Both Genting Palace and the Pavilion offer full-course meals (appetizer, soup, main course, dessert). Drinks will be charged to your room.

star cruises manila

Aside from these, there are specialty dining options! There’s the Taj offering Indian favorites, and Samurai serving delectable Japanese cuisine. Samurai have us our best gastronomic experience onboard. From the salmon and yellowtail (hamachi) sashimi as appetizer to teppanyaki as main course and matcha ice cream as dessert, that meal was scrumptious from start to finish.

Shore Excursions (Shorex)

This is the part where you can get off the ship and explore the city where it is docked.

In our case, it has three stops: Laoag, Kaohsiung, and Hong Kong. At every stop, they offer various pre-arranged tours called Shorex (shore excursions). For example, in Laoag, you have a choice among Laoag City Tour, Paoay Sand Dunes, Vigan Heritage Tour, and a couple more.

Other routes will have their own shorex offers, of course.

star cruises manila

You can book a pre-arranged tour or do it on your own (DIY). It’s completely up to you.

  • If you book a shorex , you will be joining the rest of the cruise passengers who booked that tour. The great thing about it is that you have everything taken care of for you. You will have a tour guide and a few members of the crew will join the group. They will make sure you’re back at the port in time for sailing. Meals are also often included.
  • If you pull a DIY , you have complete control of your time and it’s going to be cheaper. However, make sure you’re back by the prescribed time because the ship will NOT wait for you.

Either way, you will be given a small sheet of paper upon disembarkation. READ IT, UNDERSTAND IT, KEEP IT. It will tell you what time you have to be back. It changes per stop. The boarding deadline in Taiwan is different from that in Hong Kong.

Room and Amenities

star cruises manila

There are four types of accommodations onboard, from the cheapest to the fanciest: Inside Room, Ocean View Room, Balcony Room, and Suite. On our first time, we stayed in an Inside Room; this time in a Balcony Room. In both occasions, the room was always regularly maintained, with multiple cleanups within the day. Complimentary bottles of water also replenish every day.

If you have enough budget for an Inside Room, go for it. Don’t drop the idea of cruising just because you can’t afford the best rooms. In my experience, we spent most of our time outside the room — going on shore excursions, pigging out at the restaurants, and exploring other amenities.

Speaking of amenities, here are some that you can enjoy for FREE:

  • Gym . We packed gym clothes but we failed to use them because we would already average 15,000 steps per day just by joining the shore excursions.
  • Pool . Located on Deck 12.
  • Casino . In case you’re interested. Deck 7.

star cruises manila

There’s also Duty Free shops on Decks 7 and 8, and a small store selling chips, chocolates, and biscuits (including Filipino products) on Deck 12 just next to the bar.

Spend your evenings watching a show at the Lido Theater. Some of these performances can be enjoyed for free, while others incur additional charges, including the for-adults-only show.

Gala Night and Dinner

Happens on the fifth night. It’s an event that begins with a cocktail party at the Grand Piazza on Deck 7, where the captain introduces the senior members of the crew. There are also musical performances. Overflowing wine! Loved it!

star cruises manila

At around 6pm, enjoy a full-course dinner at the Genting Palace as a pianist serenades you with the endless ocean in the background.

If you intend to join this, make sure you’re dressed for the occasion. Dress Code: Elegant Casual. No shorts and no open toed footwear. For guys, prepare a collared shirt or blazer.

We know how important it is to you so we created a separate section for it.

Every passenger is given 1-hour complimentary internet access. If you need more, you’re gonna have to purchase a plan.

  • 24 hrs: HKS 116
  • 24 hrs (Social plan): HKD 54
  • Whole Cruise: HKD 505

Remember: you’re in the middle of the ocean, sharing the connection with the rest of the ship, so don’t expect lightning speeds, but it’s good enough for browsing, checking emails, social media, and even watching YouTube videos.

star cruises manila

What we love the most about the Superstar Virgo is that it feels like home because of the staff. There are a lot of Filipinos working onboard: from the reception to the restaurants to the room services. I’m pretty sure there are more in the non-guest-facing departments, too. And it’s always wonderful to get to talk with them. They are proud of their work!

The rest of the crew is warm, friendly, and always willing to help. You don’t even need to ask for assistance. If they see you looking like you need something (info, direction, whatever), they will be the first to approach you with a smile.

Checking Out

  • On the day before you arrive in Manila, you will be requested to proceed to Deck 12 for a health check. You will just be filling out a form and pass by a thermal imager.
  • Pack your stuff before hitting the sack on your last night because they will collect your check-in baggage early in the morning of your last day. You can leave the bag or suitcase outside your door and someone will pick it up.
  • Don’t forget to settle the bill before disembarking. Know that a gratuity of HKD110 PER NIGHT is charged to every guest (except infants below 2yo). HKD120 per guest staying in a suite.

I believe I’ve covered everything! Overall, it was a fantastic experience. Vins and I were kind of bummed that the Manila season would only last until May 28 because we wanted to do it again with our parents! Here’s hoping they’d return to the Philippines next year!

We will be going this Monday. Availed the Seniors Sale which is a good price, I think. I just don’t like the fine print on the 100HKD fee. I’m thinking of passing up on the final Gala night, as I don’t plan on bringing along shoes and formal wear.. still thinking if we should check it out..

yoshke

Doesn’t need to be formal. Just make sure your shirt has collar. And closed shoes. :D The food is somewhat similar to the usual Genting Palace menu though. :) I was just there for the free wine. Haha

Iris Rivera

How about for women? Can’t we wear elegant open toed sandals? Thanks. Great article, by the way, very helpful!

Hi! Please visit Star Cruises website for the latest promos. Also, they’re not doing the Kaohsiung-HongKong route this year. They’re doing Keelung-Okinawa. :)

Is there a weight limit for the checked in luggage? How about hand carry luggage is it the same as in an airplane?thanks

virgie alano

hi! nice article and very helpful. i have the same question, do they have specific weight and measurement on the luggage? will it matter if a passenger brings in a small or big luggage as long as it’s 1 pc or is there a specified weight on the luggage to be taken in for free?

Hi Virgie, there was no indicated weight limit for our trip. Only the number of luggage. However, things might have changed this year, so let me get back to you on this. I’ll ask someone from Star Cruises. :)

Jayne

Thanks for the infos. Will be cruising for the first time with the parentals. And were excited. Your blog is so helpful. Thanks again

No problem! Enjoy the cruise! :)

Hi! Ur blog is superrr helpful.. id like to ask Lang for the gala night, does it rally require evening gown?? We’re coming to the cruise this march Thankssss

Di naman kelangan evening gown. :)

Michelle

Hi! We’ll be traveling next month. I just want to ask how/where do we reserve seats in restaurants like Genting Palace and Pavilion? Thank you!

P.S. Does anyone know pano mode of transpo pag DIY trip sa Keelung and Ishigaki? Like malayo ba port sa city center and kung may mga taxis na near the ship?

Re Genting Palace and Pavilion, we just called the lobby/reception when we were there na.

Julia

Hi thanks for the infos. May I ask how much is the fee for the gala night? And is it buffet or fine dining? Thanks

Fine dining. If I remember correctly, included na yan sa binayaran.

Belle

Thank you for this! it makes me excited to avail there cruise. May I know what other charges I should expect that is not included in buying the ticket online? One that you mentioned is the gratuity, but I also read that there are port charges and others but doesn’t have a figure so I cannot calculate the estimated budget :)

Did you pay anything else?

In our experience, yung gratuity lang and ung wi-fi. :)

shine

Hi , This was very helpful. Regarding the gratuity, your blog says 100hkd which is much cheaper from what ive read from other blogs…. Other blogs said it was 500hkd…. Which is very expensive na… We will be travelling next month june 3 to 10. Can you help me in assuring how much really is the gratuity this year so that we can prepare…mahirap na kasi baka ma overspend kami sa pag labas namin sa hk and taiwan . Thank you so much and God bless you. Your blog really helped me naking our IT

Hi Shine, I just reached out to Star Cruises, and they said that the gratuity is now HKD 110 per night. (Last year, 100 lang.)

I think the confusion is kasi PER NIGHT ung HKD 110. So if 5 nights, that’s HKD550 for the whole trip.

We’ll update this post na rin. :)

Che

My fave travel blog site since forever! :)

For the shorex, which do you recommend, pre-arranged tour o DIY lang? We’ll be boarding this coming weekend na… :)

Thanks much!

DIY na lang, bes! Basta make sure makabalik kayo on time. :)

Minnie

This is such a very good and helpful post! :) I’m planning to treat my senior citizen parents for a trip like this but i really don’t have any idea if magkano magagastos? Would you be so kind to give me a range so alam ko kung ilan dapat ipunin ko :D and panu inaavail ung birthday promo in case? plan ko i-book sa birth month ng papa ko kase.

Thank you so much!

Hard to tell kasi ung na-experience namin ay ibang route (Taiwan-Hong Kong). Iba na yung routes ngayon.

You can do a mock booking sa Star Cruises website. On board, wala namang gastos na except ung gratuities and wifi, unless kakain kayo sa mga hindi free na restaurants.

Jamboleo

Hi. thank you for the info. it is of big help for first timers. may mga ilang questions lang ako, sana macover mo lahat. thank you in advance…

3. halimbawa, gusto namin lagi mag dine sa genting or pavilion.. need ba magpa reserve in advance for the whole 5 nights or pa reserve na lang each morning? buffet ba sa mediterranean o set meal din like sa genting and pavilion?

4. should we still give tips (in hkd or php?) despite the gratuities?

5. even after having dined at genting or pavilion, can one still eat at mediterranean? in cases na, di maciadong nabusog or kung naging picky yung kid ko at di kinain yun food nya…

6. you mentioned, Every passenger is given 1-hour complimentary internet access… each day or for the whole stay?

7. me free maps ba na ibibigay sa ship ng mga ports na pupuntahan?

8. keri lang ba na bumalik agad sa barko pag short lang yun DIY na lakwatsa sa mga ports?

sowi kung sobrang daming tanong…ganun ka-ecited. hehe! super thank you in advance!

1. Let me get back to you on that. I’ll ask Star Cruises. Ako kasi ay isang maleta and isang backpack. Yung backpack as carry on, hinayaan naman. Di ko alam kapag maleta.

2. Oks lang B&W.

3. No idea if pwede mo ipareserve 5 straight nights. Yep, buffet sa mediterranean.

4. no need na.

5. Hmmm, not sure. Kasi when you enter a restaurant, they get your card to record that you have eaten there. Not sure if kapag nakakain ka na sa isa, pwede pa sa kabila.

6. whole stay.

7. wala sa amin.

thank you so much! hoping to bump into you in one of our travels. =)

Joey

Hi i would like to ask how did u pay for ur booking? Wla daw kasi cash payment online debit or credit card, is it safe? Thank u

It’s safe.

John

Very little info on SSVirgo here in Australia so would appreciate your help. 1. Do they offer a drinks package on 5nt ex Manila and cost? 2. Do they have set dinner times, e.g. 6pm and 8pm or is it anytime dining and how do you make reservations? 3. Would very much like to attend the Gala Dinner. How do I book for this?. Many thanks.

1. I reached out to Star Cruises and they said that special offers such as drink, tour, or shopping packages are sometimes offered onboard or via shop.starcruises.com. I wasn’t able to get the costs though.

2. You can make reservations onboard, maybe on your first day. Just visit the restaurant you want to book. Or if you booked via agency, you can course it through them too. There are at least 3-4 hour specific dining times (breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper) for each restaurant. Dinner is from 6pm-9pm.

3. Upon embarking, you can go straight to the restaurant that you want to book and reserve. The gala dinner happens at all key restaurants onboard and each has its own gala dinner menu. But the best for the occasion, I think, is Genting Palace. The program happens at the Grand Piazza on Deck 7.

ces pe

just take hold of the Star Navigator…it will take you to the whole ship’s entertainment..and restaurant’s schedule…it is give in your doorstep just before retiring…enjoy the most of your stay…tour and tour around..it will get you there

no limit as to baggage if you embark or disembark in MaNILA…I mean balikan..

Is it correct that if you dine in the restaurant you cannot then go up to the buffet for a bit more? Other lines have no such restriction but I have read that you will be charged on SuperStar Virgo.

Hi John, yes, that’s true. Years ago, there was no such restriction. But when we cruised again last year, they have started swiping the card when entering a dining establishment to check if you’ve had your meal elsewhere for that dining period. The good news is, there are a lot of dining periods in a day: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper. So you just have to wait a bit more and you’ll be able to enter the buffet area again.

Caleb

Hi may i know the ideal deck if we will be travelling with our 7 year-old son? What about for the senior citizens?

Hi Caleb, i think the deck hardly matters because there are several elevators naman. What’s more important if you have seniors is your distance from the elevators. For example, kami, yung room na naassign na amin was a bit far from the elevators so mahabang lakad every time we go out. According to Star Cruises, when you book with an agent, you can request for a room na closer to the elevators. :)

Christie

Do you know if there are any restrictions on bringing our own food like bread or chips, fruit? Just for snacking in our room. Thanks!

Hi Christie, okay lang daw basta hindi alcohol.

Vicencio Ang

I would like to seek your help i was booked and paid for a cruise for superstar virgo going to vietnam dec 24 -29 2018 my problem my passport is 6 months valid which is a problem i really dont know what happened on the process and booking stage i already send a copy of my passport before booking but now im having a problem on the validity of my passport staff of star cruise should counter double check everything before booking its a hassle for me! Hotline staff investigate on the matter it should be urgently but until now no reply yet

Hi Vicencio, medyo di ko po naintindihan yung problem. Nagbook po kayo pero less than 6 months na lang ung passport validity? Saan po kayo nagbook? Online or via travel agency?

Shirley

Hi, If you missed ba iyong online shore excursion nila, will they offer on board shore excursion? Wala na kasi when I check 3 days before. Were l eaving on the 24th. Thanks

Hi Shirley, ang alam ko pwede pa ring magbook onboard, pero di ko sure. :)

Patsy

Hi, We are considering Superstar Virgo/Explorer Dream around New Zealand Dec 2019. We do not have gratuities in our country, is it compulsory on this ship? We are a “no smoking” country, can we get inside cabins that do not smell of smoke? In other revues it says ship does not cater for ‘westerners’, now wondering if we should go on the ship.

Debbie

Hi po.. First time mag-c-cruise.. Magkano po ba lahat2(pati offshore ex. Di po DIY) ng gastos po pra makaprepare kami.. Balak ko kc cruise for honeymoon.

Jade

Hello po. So you have a guude for planning a cruise ship tour around Europe? Thanks

Jocelyn belaro

How much that is cost per person?do we need to pay advance before the cruise start?

Travel Guide: SuperStar Virgo Cruise from Manila

star cruises manila

Last May 2017, I went on a 6-day-5-night cruise aboard Star Cruises SuperStar Virgo, the first cruise ship to homeport in Manila. Compared to my usual DIY backpacking trips, this was an amazing hassle-free vacation that I got to enjoy with my mom and nephew. Going on a luxury cruise is something I’d never thought I’d get to do. It’s a unique type of travel experience worth saving up for and ticking off your bucketlist!

star cruises manila

Star Cruises will again be sailing from December 2018 and January 2019 from Manila. Check out their next travel schedules here . The itinerary will be different though, but the cruising experience will be similar.

My family and I loved this cruise experience! While the rates for a cruise may seem intimidating at first glance, if you add up how much good hotel rooms cost per night, airfare for the whole family, and dining out every day during your trips, cruises actually offer very high travel value. The all-inclusive fare covers everything from accommodations, up to six complimentary meals a day, use of the recreational facilities on board, fun family activities, and live entertainment shows every night!

star cruises manila

Plus, you wake up in a different destination everyday. We got to go around Ilocos Norte & Ilocos Sur, Taiwan and Hong Kong before heading back to Manila! Except for the taxi ride going to the port, this was the most hassle-free trip I’ve ever taken! Take note that the next sailings starting March 2018 to December 2018 have a different route.

For those who want to spend quality time with their loved ones, and are wondering what to expect, I’m sharing some of my experiences from the May 2017 sailing below.

The itinerary and cost may change depending on the new schedules. For updates and details, please get in touch with Star Cruises directly through the following channels:

DOCKING AREA:

In Manila, SuperStar Virgo docks in Pier 15, Muelle de San Francisco, Port Area, Manila. It’s near Manila Hotel and Hotel H20. Embarkation begins from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

WHERE TO STAY:

There are various cabin classes on the ship, providing elegant deluxe facilities. The Executive Suites and Oceanview Staterooms with private balconies are understandably more expensive. We stayed in an Inside Stateroom (the most affordable option), a cozy cabin ideal for a group of friends or a family of up to four travelling together. There are no ocean views here, but it’s comfortable enough, near the activity center and my nephew loved the pull-down double deck bed. The room size doesn’t matter that much because you’ll want to spend most of your time outside the cabin anyway.

star cruises manila

TIP: Once you settle in your cabin, I suggest you familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout (take a picture of the maps near the elevators on your phone) and head directly to the Mediterranean buffet area for afternoon tea before the mandatory safety drill at 6:00 pm.

WHAT TO DO:

There’s so much to do while you’re on the cruise ship. Every night, you get a copy of the Star Navigator, a handy newsletter detailing your arrival and departure time, all the ship activities, musician’s performances, schedules and reminders for the next day. There’s a separate Junior Cruiser Programme for kids aged 4-12 years old.

1. Go swimming

There are two areas with swimming pools. The shallow kid’s pool is on Deck 10 behind the Activity Center, while the deeper Parthenon Pool has a winding water slide and four jacuzzi hot tubs. The water slide is not allowed for kids aged 0-6 years old.

2. Sample all the restaurants* (see separate section on where to eat)

The ship has over 10 restaurants, serving everything from Japanese to Indian food. Three of these restaurants are inclusive, meaning you can eat here for free, while the others will incur extra charges. Only water, coffee and tea are complimentary beverages in most restaurants, with free juice available at the breakfast buffet. If you want beer, shakes, cocktails and wine, you’ll have to swipe your access cards (this can add up!).

3. Try the different activities

star cruises manila

Aside from the pools, the ship has its own library, gym, basketball court, mini-golf area, jogging track, parlor, spa and health club, several boutiques, and various sun decks. You can borrow books from the library, play mini-golf, and borrow board games and puzzles. For smaller kids, there’s a kid’s corner with lots of toys and books. For teens, there’s a video game area with PS4 games for rent. For adults, there’s a casino, karaoke lounge and KTV, Mahjong room and private karaoke room.

4. Sign up for classes

Every day, there are various classes and activities for everyone to try out like origami, hip-hop dance classes, trivia games, charades, sushi-making, archery, etc. (some are free while others have minimal charges). We signed up my nephew for the Bridge Tour with the Captain.

5. Watch the shows

Every night, there are free shows featuring Asia’s best performers at the Lido Theatre. These are top quality production shows including Magic Shows, acrobatics, ballroom dancing, a dance performance of 1001 Nights and elaborate old Hollywood style production number. Make it a point to watch every show! There are also fun games and Bingo. There are also some free movies screened during the day.

WHERE TO EAT:

You can avail of up to six complimentary meals a day: Early Riser (5:30 am – 7:00 am), Breakfast or Brunch , Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner, Supper (11:00 pm – 12:30 am). We usually just had Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Mediterranean Buffet – International

A large cafeteria-style buffet restaurant that serves international and Asian cuisine. There were a lot of familiar Filipino dishes throughout our stay including adobo, kaldereta and kare-kare.

star cruises manila

My companions are very light eaters, so we ate here most of the time so that we wouldn’t waste food. I mostly went for the action stall (where they served roast beef, Hainanese chicken, prawns, etc.) My nephew loved the dessert selection and ice cream bar. There were staples like the salad bar, bread selection etc., but there was enough variety in the main courses throughout the trip. Again, only water, coffee and tea are included in the free beverage selection. For shakes, juices, beer and wine, you have to order separately.

star cruises manila

Genting Palace – Western & Chinese Restaurant

A fine dining restaurant serving a choice of either Western or Chinese plated meals. We tried this at least once for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast is still buffet, with a plated main course option. Lunch and dinner consists of rolls, salad, soup, main course (choice of meat, fish or vegetarian option) and dessert.

star cruises manila

I chose mostly the Western main courses over the Chinese dishes. Soups and salads were really good and the size of the main courses were always pretty generous. Expect extra friendly service from waiters here. They have a separate Kid’s Menu here with safe options (French fries as appetizer, spaghetti, chicken fingers, mini burgers, etc.).

star cruises manila

Pavilion – Chinese Restaurant

A family-style resto that serves the same Chinese meals as Genting. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try this because the menu options didn’t really appeal to us.

Other specialty A la Carte restaurants & dining areas are:

  • Noble House – Chinese Restaurant
  • Palazzo – Western Restaurant
  • Samurai – Japanese Restaurant
  • The Taj – Indian Buffet
  • Blue Lagoon – Asian Bistro
  • Taverna – Bar & International Snacks
  • Coffee Nook
  • Private Karaoke Room
  • Galaxy of the Stars
  • Cafe Gelato – Ice Cream
  • Diamond Club

star cruises manila

There’s a special BBQ Pool Party on the second night.

TIP: The menus of all the restaurants are posted in a hallway every day near the Lido Theatre. You can look at the different options to decide where you want to eat. On the last day, there’s a special Gala Night dinner that requires reservations in Genting Palace and Pavilion. Book a table as early as possible, because slots are on a first-come, first-served basis. If you don’t have a booking, you’ll end up eating at the Mediterranean Buffet.

WHERE TO GO:

Aside from the fun activities on the ship itself, you have the destinations to look forward to. You have three options when you dock.

  • Take the Packaged Shore Excursions offered by Star Cruises. Each destination has several tour options depending on the type of activity you want to do. You will be shuttled in a bus with a large group of passengers. All tours are conducted by English speaking guides. We availed of this in Taiwan, since it was all our first time there. It’s a bit pricey (ex. Ilocos tours start at 460 HKD per head), but for first-timers who want the hassle-free tour to extend on land and don’t mind spending more, this is a good option.
  • Free and Easy. Do a DIY Tour of the destination. You can just walk around to nearby sights or go around on your own. This is what we did in Ilocos and Hong Kong. For Ilocos, we rented a van with 2 other couples for P3,500/van (divided by six) and went to both Vigan and Paoay. For Hong Kong, we just walked around to sights nearby.
  • Stay on the Ship. If you don’t want to spend any more or have been to the destinations previously, you can just stay on the ship and enjoy the facilities with fewer people on board.

For all stops, the vessel reserves the right to depart on schedule and will not wait for late arriving passengers.

BUDGET TRAVEL TIPS: 5 Ways to Save While on a Cruise

  • Day 1: Manila, Philippines – Departure: 6:00 pm
  • Day 2: Laoag, Philippines – Arrival: 10:00 am ; Departure: 7:00 pm
  • Day 3: Kaohsiung, Taiwan – Arrival: 10:00 am ; Departure: 7:00 pm

  • Day 5: High Seas (whole day cruising)
  • Day 6: Manila, Philippines – Arrival 8:00 am

LAOAG   Port address : National Highway, Currimao Ilocos Norte (Vigan is about 1.5 hrs away and Paoay is 30 minutes away)

star cruises manila

After Manila, the first stop is the port of Currimao in Laoag. From here, we visited Calle Crisologo in Vigan, Ilocos Sur and the Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. You can opt to spend more time in just one place since both are known for their historical and cultural landmarks, Spanish colonial buildings, Baroque churches and great Ilocano dishes including bagnet, longganisa and Ilocos empanada.

Tour options: Laoag City Tour, Relaxation at Fort Ilocandia Resort, Vigan Historic Tour, Paoay Sand Dunes Adventure Tour, Discover Ilocos Norte (Cape Bojeador, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation & Bangui Windmill)

star cruises manila

TRAVEL TIP:  If you want to rent a van in Ilocos to pick you up at the port in Currimao, contact Tour de Ilocos Van Rental (Van cost P3,500 for whole day). Joel B. Corpuz. Phone: (077) 677-1488. Smart: 0920-8561-062. Globe: 0927-3697-042. Email: [email protected], [email protected]. Website: http://tourdeilocos.wixsite.com/mysite . According to locals, you can also just hire a tricycle from outside the port to go to Paoay and ride a bus along the national highway, but this is risky if you don’t have a sure way to get back.

TAIWAN Port address: Pier 9, Penglai Road, Gushan District, Kaohsung City 804, Taiwan (it’s not possible to go to Taipei, since it’s about 4-5 hours away by land)

The second stop is the biggest port in the south of Taiwan, Kaohsiung. Special concessions have been given so that Filipinos on the trip will not have to apply for a Taiwanese visa! Here, we tried out Taiwanese cuisine in a local restaurant, visited the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, Love River, the Pier 2 Art Center and went shopping for local treats.

Tour options: Fo Guang Shan & Love River, Tainan Highlights, Qijin & Shopping Tour, Kaoshiung City & Natural Landscape

star cruises manila

HONG KONG Port address: Ocean Terminal, Harbour City, Tsimhatsui, HKSAR

The third stop was Hong Kong. The cruise ship docks in Victoria Harbour, which is connected to a mall with lots of shops and boutiques and is walking distance from the Avenue of the Stars (the area with the Bruce Lee statue). We just took it easy and used the free WiFi at the Hong Kong Cultural Center and watched a show at the Hong Kong Space Museum’s planetarium nearby. The sight of the skyline is pretty nice at night from the ship, which we headed back to for dinner.

Tour options: Hong Kong Island Tour, Half-day Ocean Park Tour, Seafood Dinner at Lamma Island, Hong Kong Disneyland Tour

WHAT TO WEAR:

Most of the guests were wearing casual resort wear, dresses and shorts, especially when hanging out by the pool and decks. The ship has a lot of nice areas for OOTD shoots, so you might as well take advantage and bring nice outfits especially for the last day when you’re on the ship the whole day.

For the shore excursions to Ilocos, Taiwan and Hong Kong, you can dress more casually. Wear light and airy clothing because it can get very hot. You might want to bring an umbrella or hat because you’ll mostly be going around mid-day when the sun is very harsh.

star cruises manila

The whole ship is air-conditioned and it can get cool at night. Some of the restaurants like Genting Palace feel a bit formal, so it wouldn’t hurt to dress up a bit more at night and to watch the live shows at the theatre. People really dressed up for the Cocktail Party, Gala Night and Grand Farewell Party (which has a suggested dress code of Elegant Casual). Cocktail dresses for women, guys collared shirts and closed shoes are ok. No slippers and shorts if you’re planning to attend these.

star cruises manila

A note for those who need to be connected to the Internet all the time. WiFi is available, but don’t expect super high speeds. You’re only given 1 hour (per person) free and then you’ll have to pay for it. The hours are counted as continuous usage. You can’t connect and disconnect from the WiFi.

  • 1 hour – HKD $0
  • 6 hours – HKD $30
  • 24 hours – HKD $105
  • 48 hours – HKD $180
  • 72 hours – HKD $255

TIP: I suggest you just use a data plan while still in Manila and Ilocos. In Taiwan and Hong Kong, there’s free WiFi when you dock at the Kao Port and Ocean Terminal, Harbour City. Take advantage of these or just wait till you get back home to upload all your photos. If you buy coffee from the Coffee Nook near the reception, they have a promo that gives out free 1 hour WiFi vouchers.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

The ship makes use of a cashless system for everything. You’ll be swiping your access cards for activities and other items, which you will have to settle (by cash or credit card) before disembarkation. There is a currency exchange counter on the ship, but the rate is high. Also, their standard currency is in HK dollars. If you’re converting anything (ex. US dollars to Taiwanese dollars), they’ll convert it twice (first to HKD). If you’re going on a shore excursion and want to shop there, I suggest you exchange your money the night before, because the line can get really long right before disembarkation.

WHO / WHY YOU SHOULD TRY IT:

For those who want to spend quality time with their loved ones, the SuperStar Virgo offers an all-inclusive hassle-free travel experience. It’s a very comfortable way to travel, which makes it ideal for those traveling with kids and seniors, who you wouldn’t want to subject to long and uncomfortable trips.

star cruises manila

But it’s not just for seniors and families. This is also great for couples and a bonding experience for  barkada s who want a last getaway this summer. It’s not really for budget backpackers, but you do get to three different destinations including two international destinations (Taiwan and Hong Kong) without having to spend for airfare or Visa applications. Being on the ship feels very homey and comfortable. There are so many warm and friendly Filipino crew members who go the extra mile to make your stay more fun. It’s definitely a unique travel experience.

Pls email cruises leaving Manila year 2018 and prices please. Thank you

Please send meregarding rates per person. We plan for a family travel sometime Febraury or March 2018.

What about food and accomodation is these included at the rates per person . We travelling 4pax with 2 Senior Citizen

Hello Marcos, I am not connected with Star Cruises. I just shared some tips based on my family trip in their 2017 sailing 🙂 The rates may differ now because the route is different. According to their FB page, there’s a special Early Bird Discount Rate from only USD540* per person. Senior Citizens Cruise 1, Take 1 for March sailings, while Kids Cruise for Free for April to May sailings starting March 2018. The fare includes everything: accommodations, up to 6 complimentary meals a day, use of the recreational facilities on board, fun family activities, and live entertainment shows every night. Not included are the optional Shore Excursions (which you can just DIY).

Hello Roberto. I updated this post with the new sailings starting March 2018, but please check their official website here: https://booking.starcruises.com/cruise-deals/phl/ssvinmanila/

Hi Kara thanks for the helpful tips. I am getting more excited after reading your blog. We’re planning to cruise in March 2018, just to ask if the rate includes the port charges already, if not, how much is the port charge. Thanks!

Hi Sharon, based on their latest email advisory (I signed up for their newsletter), their Early Bird Rate for as low as USD 625 per person is already inclusive of port charges. Promo is valid until December 31, 2017 only. 🙂

Hello, for DIY (Free and Easy) trips, may I know what time did you go back to the ship? Can you recommend the safest amount of time to allot (if around 1-2hrs before departure still ok)? Just not sure if there’s anything else that needs to be done or if there are long lines before entry when going back. Thank you 🙂

When you leave the ship, you will be given a piece of paper with the address of port and reminders of what time you have to be back. Usually 1-2 hours is ok, just make sure you make it back on time because the ship reserves the right to leave passengers behind. There can be a bit of a line when they inspect your IDs/passport and badge prior to boarding again, but staff are pretty efficient. Just don’t cut it too close. 🙂

Hello Kara,

Your post is very informative.. we’ll be going on a cruise come May. I just want to ask about luggages.. do they have a limit? Are they strict with what you bring in the ship? How about the port charges and gratuity fees, how much did you pay for it? Thanks in advance!

Thank you Kara for the helpful tips. My husband and I just booked for this upcoming cruise, your blog just answered all my questions.

Hi Felma. You’re welcome! Hope you enjoy the cruise this year! 🙂

Hi Ariane, each passenger is only allowed one piece of check-in luggage free-of-charge. Anything more will incur additional fees. I think the port and gratuity fees differ per port, so I can’t say how much it will cost for this year since the route is different. I think they’re strict about alcohol. You have to declare if you’re bringing any in and can’t drink it in public on the cruise ship or they’ll charge you a corkage fee. For other shopping items, we had no problem bringing in souvenir foodstuff, toys, etc. Better if you ask Star Cruises directly though 🙂

thanks for an mind opening for use! before going to this trip , for what is to do and to do not in the cruise! like me in a budjet, now i know how i can save my money better in the cruise… thanks

thank you! 🙂

Anybody ( family or group of 3-4 pax ) cruising on May 14-19, 2018 ( Mla-Naha Japan- Keelung Taiwan-Manila) ? Im planning a DIY itinerary at Naha and Keelung, and wanted to maximize the half day tour itinerary by renting a van instead of joining shore excursion offer by Star Cruises, anybody wanted to join us? pls email me at [email protected] . Thanks

hi. would just like to ask since i booked an inside cabin as well, does the room have an electric kettle or ref (hahaha – asa pa sa ref). though may food – i usually drink coffee kasi .. i need hot water 🙂

Hello. As far as I remember, walang ref and kettle (at least in our room – we also stayed in the inside cabin). You can see different room types here: https://www.starcruises.com/ph/en/cabins/inside But you can get free water, coffee and tea from the cafeteria area any time of the day.

Count us in..we re 7 in the group

HI Kara 😉 We are sailing on March 10-16 2018 with my whole family. May I ask more or less how much is the port charges, Taxes etc. Do we have to pay any taxes or charges when we dock in Naha and Keelung?

Hi Jhed, it’s much better if you ask Star Cruises directly as the taxes may differ from when we went last year 🙂 Try contacting them by email or through their FB page. Have fun!

Hi Kara! we will also be cruising next week. I would like to ask about the money. Did you change your money in the cruise or did you change it before going onboard? We will be going to japan and taiwan. do you recommend to have our money change before boarding? how about shorex? can we booked it when we are on the cruise or should we booked it in advance?

Hi Kara, We are a group of 19, most are seniors. For our Naha trip, should we take a train, bus or rent a van?

This is very informative so thank you for that. I would just like to know which restaurants serve the complimentary meals? Where can we dine for free? And is there a reservation fee for the gala night? Hope you can answer my questions! Thank you! 🙂

Hi everyone! Who will be sailing this March 20? See you guys there.

Hi Olivia. The 3 complimentary restaurants are the Mediterranean Buffet – International, Genting Palace – Western & Chinese Restaurant and Pavilion – Chinese Restaurant. The rest you have to pay. No reservation fee for gala night, but it’s first come first served, so reserve a slot as soon as you arrive 🙂

Hi Liz, we changed money on board, but I recommend you change beforehand to get best rates. The ship’s default currency was HK dollars. So they would change anything you give them twice, first to HK Dollars and then to the currency of the country you’re visiting, so medyo lugi. You can book the Shorex on the cruise ship, preferably the day before you dock in a destination.

If you want convenience, go for the SHOREX arranged by the cruise. If you’re willing to DIY it yourself, it’s up to you. I’m not really sure of your travel style and we I haven’t been to Naha because the route was different last year.

It’s too late when I saw this advertisement. Will you still have these cruises in 2019, I’m interested to know because my family wants to go.

Hi Loida, there might still be slots for the April and May sailings. Check out their website: https://booking.starcruises.com/cruise-deals/phl/ssvinmanila/

See you there!

Hi, did you avail of the ship’s WiFi package? How much was it?

Hi! I also booked the inside stateroom. Is there a chance that we can move the other single bed beside the other one so it will be magkatabi? Or i just have to request for a double bed instead? Plus do you have an idea how much for a day tour package on board?

Hello. The beds can not be moved. They’re attached to the cabin walls. Please contact them directly for the latest Shorex packages.

Hi Ailee. No, we didn’t because it was too expensive. Please read my post again, I included the rates under the section “WiFi.”

Hi Kara, Thank you for the insights. We will be cruising with Superstar Virgo this April 29. May I ask how much, more or less, is per meal at the paying restaurants? Do they serve buffet? Thanks

Hi Eileen, I’m not sure because we didn’t eat in the paying restaurants, but expect hotel prices (probably 500 to 1,000 pesos per dish.). It really depends on the restaurant. There are a lot of dining options from Taj offering Indian cuisine, Samurai delectable dishes, etc. The Mediterranean – International restaurant which serves free meals is buffet.

The paying restaurants will cost from 50HKD to 500 HKD per person depending on the restaurant. Drinks are quite pricey.. soft drinks are 31HKD and beer is 40 HKD. Samurai has an all you can eat Japanese lunch for about 250HKD. The 24 hour Blue Lagoon has entrees from 50HKD

Thanks for the tips on rates, Joe. Appreciate it.

No problem..remember that you have at least five free buffets you can take advantage of: the 7-9 breakfast buffet, the noon lunch, a 3:00 afternoon tea, 7 – 10 p.m. dinner, and a 10:30 p.m. “supper.” You can also have coffee and pastries on deck above the pool from 6 am to 9 am. For the evening gala, try to skip the Chinese one.

The wifi package is 116 HKD for 24 continous hours. or $505 HKD for the entire duration of the cruise/

Hi! I noticed that there are very few people on the cruise with you. Some of your photos look like you have exclusive access to the facilities. Is this accurate? Usually these cruises are jam packed with people, but I don’t see them anywhere.?

Last year was the first time this cruise was offered in the Philippines and it wasn’t very well-known yet. We cruised during one of the last sailings in summer and we were told that capacity for that trip was just at 50% since most people availed of the first few sailings. I personally enjoyed it very much because it wasn’t crowded when we went and we got to enjoy quality access to facilities. Since I wrote this and it was offered again this year, it’s become more popular and more tourists booked. I’ve heard some accounts of people complaining this year that it wasn’t so enjoyable because ships were operating on full capacity.

Hi Kara, Thank you for the tips. We will be cruising with Superstar Virgo this May 19-24…Anyone here who will be sailing on these days and have a DIY shorex and willing to accomodate a party of 4pax? 🙂

You’re welcome and enjoy. Hope you find someone to join 🙂

Hi Ms. Kara,

Ask ko lng need ba ng visa pag bumaba sa japan?

Hi Connie, for this cruise, there’s no Visa required to go down during stops in Japan and Taiwan.

Hi.. We might be travelling this june 3 to 8 hingkong taiwan. Just a few questions.

Ate the entertainment free like those you mentioned magic show and other shows? What are other amenities can we avail for free? Thanjs

Hi Shine. The all-inclusive fare covers everything from accommodations, up to 6 complimentary meals a day (in one of 3 restos: Mediterranean Buffet – International, Pavilion and Genting Palace), use of recreational facilities on board (swimming pools, etc.), certain activities, and yes, the live entertainment (magic show and other shows) every night!

Yes most of the shows are free including the magic shows. There is also a reading library on the 12th floor near the pool as well as a gym on the same floor for exercise. For the shows, fall in line early as the good seats get filled up.

Good day! Do you have some iterinary this augost 2018? Please need to know your package.

Hello Mary Joy, I do not handle package tours to SuperStar Virgo. But they only sail during summer months because that’s when the sea is calmest.

Hi, if you may, how much did you spend all in all, just an estimate so that I may know how much I need to save for the cruise. Also what are gratuities? is it included in the fare or we still have to pay that after?

https://www.starcruises.com/ph/en/hotdeals/superstar_virgo_winterseasonpromo_5n_svphw18_3n4free?utm_source=facebook-ph&utm_medium=linkad&utm_campaign=ecomm-jul-2018&utm_term=&utm_content=SVPHW18_3N4FREE

their next sked is on dec2018-jan 2019

Dec 2018-jan 2019 star virgo schedule

gratuities not included in fare. it’s 120HKD per pax for suite accomodation and 100hkd per pax for other accomodation.

fare + gratuities + shorex will cost u around 45-70K per pax (depending on your room accomodation)

METRO MANILA | Star Cruises Launch Cruises from Manila

Star Cruises Manila Cruise

Ever thought of joining a cruise trip but can’t find one without flying to neighboring countries? Worry no more, Star Cruises, the cruise giant in the Asia Pacific, will now launch cruises from Manila! Their first venture, a six-day cruise that would take you to Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, then to Kaohsiung in Taiwan, and finally, to Hong Kong . Quite exciting!

I have previously joined tours from Star Cruises. First, their Kota Kinabalu to Puerto Princesa cruise cruise, then a second one from Guangzhou to Hong Kong cruise , and lastly, a few months ago, taking the Singapore to Malaysia cruise . On all these, I had nothing but a good leisurely time, both on my time on the ship and the much-awaited shore excursions.

The ship docking in Manila this coming March 2017 would be one of Star Cruises’ biggest ships, the Superstar Virgo . I was lucky enough to have boarded it during my second cruise with them and it is quite impressive. From the luxurious grand lobby, to the multitude of buffet restaurants (all free for cruise guests, by the way), and my own comfy room which has its own balcony to boot!

Now, you’re probably thinking that cruises are quite expensive. Well, to be honest, most cruises are, especially if you’re a backpacker. But consider this; for a limited time, Star Cruises is offering early bird discounts (for departures on March 19, 24 and 29, 2017) starting from USD490.00 or around PHP24,500.00 per head for a twin-sharing room. If you add in a third and fourth person with you (quad-sharing room), you get their tickets at 50% off the price at PHP12,250.00 per person. If you’re four in the group, cruise price would clock in at PHP18,375.00 for each . Still expensive?

You get to go to two different countries, Taiwan and Hong Kong . Add in the requisite travel tax plus the Laoag trip by bus. That would, more or less, leave you with PHP5,541.00 for a six days / five nights stay on a cruise ship inclusive of top-notch entertainment shows, use of facilities, and more importantly, unlimited buffet meals at all times of the day, yes, even at midnight. Can you name a hotel offering the same for a measly PHP1,108.20 per night?

Granted, I’ve made it a roundtrip fare for Taiwan and Hong Kong, but come one, would you really do a trip where you would jump from Taiwan to Hong Kong? Highly unlikely. So let’s break it down with more precise numbers:

PHP 1,594.00 – Laoag Bus Fare   PHP 4,000.00 – Manila to Taipei Roundtrip Ticket (estimated seat sale prices)   PHP 1,620.00 – Airport Tax   PHP 4,000.00 – Manila to Hong Kong Roundtrip Ticket (estimated seat sale prices)   PHP 1,620.00 – Airport Tax ------------------------------------------   PHP 12,834.00 – Total - PHP 18,375.00 – Cruise Fee per Person ------------------------------------------   PHP 5,541.00 – Divided into five nights, equals PHP 1,108.20 per night Cruise trips are expensive? Not really.

Someday....

Kaya yan, sir!

For an oldie like me, cruising is the only enjoyable and less tiring way to travel. Have a great New Year and keep on traveling!

Cruising is fun! Happy new year, Bert!

do i need to have visa to go to taiwan via cruise?

Hi Eloisa, no need for Filipinos to apply for Taiwanese Visa for the cruise. Star Cruises would be the one to prepare a special permit for guests boarding the cruise.

Approximately how much pocket money should my brother bring on the cruise?

Actually, the cost is almost all in. You'd only need extra money for shopping and if you want to eat at pay restaurants within Superstar Virgo

The Star Cruises SuperStar Virgo will begin its Manila-Laoag-Kaohsiung-Hongkong this March 19 until May 23, 2017 offering the 5-night round trip itinerary.

SuperStar Virgo is the first cruise ship to homeport in Manila, taking away the need for Manila-based vacationers had to fly to Hongkong or Singapore to take a cruise.

Star Cruises president Ang Moo Lim said in a press conference that the choice of Manila as homeport is due to the consistent involvement of Filipino seafarers in the Star Cruises company during its 2 decades of leadership in Asian cruises.

“Star Cruises was the first major cruise line to recruit Filipinos 23 years ago for our cruise ships, and now, we are pleased to be the first international cruise line to welcome Filipinos on board Superstar Virgo as our guests from our home port in Manila,” Lim was quoted in a Philippine Star report.

The Star Cruises website invites travelers to the Philippines as “an exciting fusion of throbbing metropolis and beach paradise, not to mention rich cultural identity and an exuberant, upbeat people.”

It describes Manila as rapidly developing megacity, “as chaotic, loud and energetic as they come.”

The summer cruise schedule coincides with the regular school break and Holy Week. Michael Goh, Star Cruises’ senior vice president for sales, added “Summer is the best time to have a cruise for the pleasant weather and calmer seas.”

The new cruise trip will also make a port call in Laoag for the white sand beaches and Spanish colonial buildings in Ilocos, which it refers to as the sunniest region in the Philippines.

Star Cruises also offer visa-free entry to Taiwan for its cruise passengers.

Manila cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-06-06 03:35

Port Manila cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Manila, Luzon Island Philippines. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Manila is Philippines' capital city and the country's largest seaport. It has an excellent deep and sheltered harbour with built-up modern waterfront. On the south bank of Pasig river is situated the original city, Intramuros, established in 1571 by the Spanish, and containing unique examples of 17th-century Spanish architecture, together with encircling wall begun in 1590. During World War II, lots of the old city was destroyed. From Manila tourists can also visit Malacanang Palace, Taal volcano and Pagsanjan Falls.

The Philippine capital of Manila was established by King Philip II of Spain. In the years which followed, the Spanish successfully prevented the Portuguese, Chinese and Dutch from settling in the Philippines. But the British occupied Manila during the Seven Years' War, though they agreed to return it to Spain under 1763 Treaty of Paris. During World War II, the Japanese took control of Manila, and eventually the United States recaptured the islands and returned them to Philippines. In 1946, the country was granted full independence. The first president was elected, Manuel Roxas. In more recent history was the exile of former leader Ferdinand Marcos and new Democratic leadership.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport also serves the airline Air Juan that provides regularly scheduled domestic flights linking directly Manila City with  Subic Bay Freeport , Boracay Island (Caticlan) , Busuanga Bay and Puerto Galera. Air Juan's flights are direct (without passing through other airports) which allows tourists to arrive from Manila directly to their local hotels and resorts.

Port Manila

Port Manila (officially Pantalan ng Maynila) has several large facilities and terminals serving the maritime shipping trade. The port serves the entire Manila metro area. The port is located on Manila Bay and is ranked as Philippines' largest seaport. The port is operated by Philippine Ports Authority (state-owned corporation), which manages most of the country's ports.

Manila Bay's entrance has width 19 km (12 ml) expanding to 48 km (30 ml). Mariveles (Bataan province) is the port's anchorage area. Port Manila is composed of North Harbor, South Harbor, and MICT (Container Terminal).

  • North Harbor seaport is in the Tondo Area and has 7 docking piers (numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14). North Harbor port is accessible through Radial Road 10. The North Port Passenger Terminal is the facility that serves all ferries and cruise ships to Manila.
  • South Harbor seaport is in the Port Area and has 5 docking piers (numbers 3, 5, 9, 13, 15), South Harbor is accessible by Bonifacio Drive road. The port's passenger terminal ("Eva Macapagal Super Terminal") is between piers 13 and 15 and also serves as the 2GO Ferry company's main hub.
  • Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) is located between North Harbor and South Harbor and is accessible via MICT South Access Road. In 2011, the MICT Terminal was ranked world's 38th largest container port (annual shipping traffic 3,26 million TEU-countainers). The 2014-inaugurated Berth 6 increased port's capacity by 18%.

In mid-October 2018, Philippine Ports Authority started a capacity improvement project at MICT (operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc). The project includes construction of 4 new berths (7, 8, 9, 10), all with max draft/water depth 14,5 m (48 ft), allowing docking of larger boxships . Terminal's berth expansion was funded by ICTSI Group at total cost USD 380+ million.

In addition to seaport's capacity improvements was the purchase of 16 new RTGs (rubber-tired gantry cranes, operational since April 2019) plus 2 super-post-Panamax quay cranes (dockside gantries) that can serve boxships with capacity over 22,000 TEUs. Terminal's current container-handling equipment includes 18 quay cranes and 58 RTGs (74 by 2020). The large dockside gantries are China-manufactured (by ZPMC-Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co Ltd) and each has max reach 16 rows (across twin). The RTGs are standard-diesel and Japan-made (by Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co Ltd).

For season 2017,  Star Cruises  (Asian company owned by Genting Hong Kong) announced its first Manila homeport deployment (for roundtrip itineraries) of its vessel  SuperStar Virgo . The ship has 13 decks and 935 cabins (capacity 2400 passengers plus 1100 crew). It offers a 5-night / 6-day cruise itinerary ("Jewels of the South China Sea")  from Manila to Currimao-Laoag Philippines (colonial buildings, baroque churches, Pagudpud's white-sand beaches), Kaohsiung Taiwan (Chinese culture and cuisine) and Hong Kong China (world's most popular metro city / shopping, dining, nightlife). The ship's Manila roundtrips started in March 2017 (departures March 19 through May 29) and also during summer months. Start Cruises' "Early Bird Discount" booking prices start from PHP 24,500 (around USD 450) per person (double occupancy Inside Stateroom). Third and fourth passengers (Quad share cabins) received additional 50% discount.

Star Cruises Superstar Virgo | Cruising Asia Beautifully Different

Globetrotters unite! Star Cruises Superstar Virgo is coming back to its homeport in Manila to begin another season of fun & exciting cruises in Asia!

And nothing a homecoming could be more perfect than sailing on Christmas season. Bringing more cheers to yuletide chills, its merry cruises will on start on December 4, 2018 until January 3, 2019. Its new routes, Manila-Halong Bay-Sanya-Manila & Manila-Ho Chi Minh-Nha Trang-Manila promise yet another fun-packed 5-nights of live-aboard experience on Asia’s premiere cruise liner.

Cruising is a travel bucketlist fodder for any gadabout tramping the world. Sunset margaritas on decks, pool parties, endless dining, amazing shows & pillow talks in oceanview cabins, all these excite us for a fab life at sea.

It was my long time travel dream too. But with all the shebang I found it quite intimidating. From the price that costs a fortune to the thought of mastering chichi acts of cruise etiquettes had me holding this wish for a long time.

But last June, I finally got the chance to go on my first Asian cruise. On board Star Cruises Superstar Virgo, we sailed from Manila to Taiwan & Hongkong & back to Manila on a 6-day, 5-night journey.

That trip gave many new wonderful memories & changed the way I look at cruising. Truly, it is a great way to see other places differently beautiful in just one go.

What it’s really like to cruise on Star Cruises Superstar Virgo?

Cruises may be overwhelming especially to those who haven’t tried it yet . But the truth is, it’s just like spending a vacation in a resort. You got everything: nice rooms, sexy pools, restaurants, bars & entertainment — just floating. And surely, there are more good reasons to experience this kind of travel at least once in your lifetime.

Sail Away from Manila

Star Cruises Superstar Virgo is the first cruise line to make Manila as its homeport. Meaning, your voyage begins & ends here. It also means there’s no need for Filipinos to travel abroad to experience an international cruise.

Visit Multiple Places in One Go

One nice thing about cruising is it affords you to see different places in one travel. It brings you countries that otherwise would have been done on a plane & missing that “getting there” fun factor. Cruises are both all about the journey & the destination.

And by the time the boat anchors on its port-of-call, guests get the chance to go on shore excursions either on guided sightseeing with local tour operators or you can go free & easy. I like joining tour groups because everything is convenient & saves me time figuring out the logistics.

Never a Boring Time On-Board

Superstar Virgo is Star Cruises flagship boat that boasts of grandiose design & state-of-the-art technology. As it is made to be your luxury holiday home at sea, the amenities & many things to do on board are just unthinkable.

Parties are thrown everywhere — at the pool, on the sundeck, at the lobby, in bars & restaurants. And it happens from the moment you arrive until you disembark. Isn’t that cool?

Zodiac Theater is perhaps my most loved part of the ship. It stages shows every night, from a mishmash of vaudeville antics & acrobatic acts to cultural performances & musicals. At daytime, you can curl up with popcorns on movie marathons or catch a magic show with your kids.

If you like to bet your luck on the table, Star Cruises Superstar Virgo has Resorts World Casino on board. Wager those chips, roll the dice or stack the odds in your favour & empty the house with a jackpot!

Before I made this trip, I promised I would not shop. But with a whole lot of duty free stuff on the ship I eventually ended up going home with a bag full of goodies. From trinkets & snacks to souvenirs & luxury items, the boat has quite a lot for your retail therapy.

Cruising is never a passive experience by just lazing around the pool. You can sign up on short classes like learning how make sushi or origami. There are also exclusive tours where you get a chance to brush elbows with the captain & the chefs.

But cruising on Star Cruises isn’t only packing your holiday with activities. You can choose to space out over well-chilled sundowners. At Superstar Virgo, you can cocoon in a jacuzzi, in the sauna or on soak baths inspired from traditional Japanese ofuro.

I never really thought that I would catch up with that much needed “me time” at sea. I had a massage, a haircut, facial treatment & even had my nails done.

Star Cruises Superstar Virgo is a floating resort as much as it’s also a means of transport. This megaship has everything to keep you entertained & even fit. It has a gym replete with equipment & fitness classes, lap pools, running tracks, basketball court & even a mini golf course.

Another happy place for me on the boat are its restaurants. And if eating six times a day for free isn’t indulgence, I don’t know what else is. Yes foodies, from breakfast to midnight snack & all those yummy in-betweens are truly amazing. With about 15 restaurants, cafes & bars, the choices on board can be maddening.

Cruising is for Everyone

We always think that cruises are nothing but love boats filled with retired old folks. You’d be surprised to find that many cruisers now are younger than thought. Star Cruises has upped its game in creating more family-oriented fleet fitted with various amenities & activities that suit all ages & travel fancies.

Reasonably Priced Vacation

Ironically, you do not have to be super rich to experience this kind of cruise. If you account the plane fares, hotel accommodation, food & tours, it’s almost the same, if not cheaper if you go on Superstar Virgo. Plus, don’t forget that the cruise begins & ends in Manila. Isn’t that a great steal of a deal?

Star Cruises also offers exciting promotions like Cruise 1-Take 1 making it a hip ship travel dig!

As traveling becomes a massive lifestyle, new & exciting ways of exploring the world have become available too. Cruising offers experiential travel experience & as a means of movement. And Star Cruises continues to put the joy back into wayfaring by boat, navigating our historic seas & rediscovering the colors of Asia — in style.

The ship also has a number of facilities such as Duty-Free shops, jewelry boutiques, a salon, a spa and gym, karaoke rooms, a child’s activity center, a game room, and a two-level theater that can comfortably seat 800 guests.

Outdoor activities include a 100-meter mega slide , an outdoor swimming pool, mini golf course, and a calendar of themed activities.

First Things First

Tip: Make sure to withdraw before boarding as there are no ATMs available on the ship.

Untitled

There are plenty of things to do on the ship, so while you are on the high seas you won’t get easily bored. The Magic and live shows are the best forms of entertainment on board, it gives you something to look forward to every day. Kids will definitely enjoy these family-friendly shows, just make sure to go 20-minutes early to secure a good seat.

The crew all seemed nice and professional and the food is good for the most part; we recommend skipping the Pavillion (Chinese Restaurant) as the set menu needs some work. There are a plenty of restaurants that are not inclusive, this is perfect if you want to avoid the queue and big crowds.

The Pool Deck is where most activities are held, from live bands to the farewell dinner. There are also a number of outdoor activities that you should check out like the mini golf, basketball court, and the viewing deck (one of the best spots to see the sunset.)

Expect the Pool Deck to be very… very packed.

If you are looking for a cruise that’s affordable and visa-free this is definitely your chance!

  4. SUPERSTAR VIRGO: Cruise Guide for First-Timers (What to Expect)
