Interview: POLA ORBIS Travel Retail’s Yoshikazu Yokote on navigating amid the recovery
Based in Hong Kong and led by Director and CEO Yoshikazu Yokote, POLA ORBIS Travel Retail (POTR) has since proven that investment a sound one, helping the Group achieve +120% sales in Fiscal 2021.
In this exclusive interview, we caught up with Yokote who discusses how POTR has navigated the waves of the pandemic, its China and Hainan-focused travel retail push and how it is leveraging the strengths of POHD’s three brands, POLA, Jurlique and THREE, to drive recovery and growth in travel retail.
POLA ORBIS Holdings created a new travel retail entity at the end of 2020. What led to the creation of this subsidiary and how has it performed since then?
Although the travel retail market continues to experience tough conditions in various regions due to a significant reduction in international flights, China’s offshore duty free market continues to grow strongly. It is a very important channel that is indispensable for the group’s future international business growth strategies, as it is expected to grow again after the pandemic subsides.
Therefore, in order to integrate and leverage the strengths and resources of the travel retail business and speed up expansion, we established POTR as a sales company specialising in travel retail in Hong Kong. In terms of business performance, we have achieved more than +120% of the previous years sales as a Group in FY2021.
What is your overall ambition for POLA ORBIS Holdings in the travel retail channel?
POTR was established by POHD to efficiently capture the strong demand for travel retail around the world. As a core business of the group, we aim to capture demand overseas, especially in China, and maximise sales.
Based on the group mission to ‘Sensitise the world to beauty’, we aim to maximise the uniqueness of our brands to our customers in the travel retail channel and become a choice corporate partner for our business partners in this channel.
How has the pandemic crisis affected your travel retail expansion? Could you give us some insight into how the Group is recovering?
Travel retail is highly dependent on the amount of travellers, especially Chinese consumers. As a result, in the first half of 2020, all areas shrunk significantly. However from July onwards, there was a partial recovery in Hainan. In 2021, the immense positive impact of Hainan continued, while there were no fundamental improvements in other areas. This year, that recovery still looks uncertain due to the lockdown in China and in Hainan in August.
In 2019, POLA ORBIS Holdings’ had a China-focused travel retail push. How has the pandemic affected those plans? How are you reaching this core Chinese consumer – who are now unable to travel?
The pandemic has not affected our plans to drive travel retail and domestic in China. Jurlique has a mature footprint in travel retail especially in China. THREE opened its first travel retail store in China in Beijing International Airport in 2019 and POTR also launched POLA in China Travel Retail in Hainan in 2021.
All these launches are in conjunction with the development of local markets. Digital is also a key channel to develop and reach the Chinese consumer and we have been building and growing this channel strongly in recent years.
Flagship brand POLA took its first travel retail steps when it opened a new counter with CDFG in Haikou. How important is Hainan to your business today? Do you have any more launches planned in this key region?
Hainan is very important to our business today and in the future. We have strong partnerships with our retail operators and are in constant discussions with new partners for more opportunities in Hainan.
POLA launched its very first travel retail counter in China in Hainan and this allowed us to express the brand DNA in a physical format. It was a long discussion with the retailer but we have a strong collaboration with CDFG and we are happy to finally bring the brand to Hainan customers.
Jurlique, POLA and THREE were the three focus brands for travel retail, driving the Group’s multi-brand strategy. How does this multi-brand strategy play out in post-pandemic travel retail?
The multi-brand strategy is important to us as a group. Many brands are currently in the natural positioning and POTR wants to be a key group in travel retail to offer this to customers.
We are performing in line with the expectations of the modern consumer and we are convinced that customers will really appreciate the value that we offer. This all comes back to the mission of the group that I mentioned earlier about ‘Sensitising the world to beauty’.
Amidst pandemic times, perfumes & cosmetics is still the biggest category in the channel. What role do companies like POLA ORBIS Holdings play in driving category and wider channel recovery?
The customer’s purchasing behaviour has changed post-pandemic. As a beauty company, we need to be sensitive and reactive to customer’s changing needs. We need to understand the intrinsic value of how our brands and products are able to enhance the lives of our consumers from product usage to impact on the environment.
POLA, Jurlique and cruelty-free THREE express naturality and are dedicated to preserving nature. After the pandemic, this has become even more important to the modern consumer.
Jurlique is a biodynamic brand with our own farm in Adelaide Hills. For over 35 years, our biodynamic farming process has used a closed loop ecosystem using only holistic methods, internally produced fertilisers and soil conditioning to ensure the purity and authenticity of the botanicals we farm.
Satoshi Suzuki, Representative Director and President of POLA ORBIS Holdings, was convinced of our methods and eventually integrated Jurlique into the group ten years ago. So, as one of the pioneers in this category, we have a big role to play ensuring we deliver the best biodynamic skincare to our customers.
In 2019, 90% of POLA ORBIS Holdings revenues came from the Japanese domestic market. How has your local to international mix evolved since then?
Our international sales ratio was 15% in 2020 and 18% in 2021. The priority in the group is to continuously grow and capture market share. As CEO of POTR, I have been appointed in this position to grow the international business and POTR is part of the international division.
We are already growing Jurlique and POLA. Next, we will be registering THREE in China domestic and expanding the business there. We are constantly looking for more opportunities to develop the business. The current economic situation is not favourable, but we want to be there when the economy rebounds.
How do you think brands, retailers and airports must evolve to meet the demands of consumers in the post-COVID retail landscape?
From a brand perspective, Jurlique is working on B-Corp certification to have impact on the planet. We are really thinking about redoing the packaging for all our brands. Jurlique’s future is to be holistic and conscious about the impact it places on the environment. This is really important to us as a brand.
Do you have a final message for the travel retail industry?
While POHD opened POTR in the middle of pandemic, the decision to focus on travel retail is right and I am confident we will become a key player.
We are convinced that travel retail will recover and that our brands’ DNA and propositions will be able to satisfy the customer and make us a key player in the future. Travel retail is also going to be one of the key pillars of the group in the long-term.

Global potential: POLA expecting overseas sales to surpass $270m by 2023 on the back of China demand

POLA is the ‘ultra-prestige’ skin care brand owned by Japanese cosmetics manufacture Pola Orbis Holdings, which is also the company behind J-beauty brands ORBIS and THREE.
The brand has been expanding across Asia in recent years and is now present in seven markets. Over 2017 to 2020, the brand’s sales have grown four times over.
In the latest report to its shareholders, the company expressed optimism for the brand’s position and said it would now focus on achieving profitable growth of its overseas business.
The success of POLA overseas would not only boost the brand but also contribute tremendously to the group’s overall business performance, said the firm.
According to its new report, POLA’s overseas sales is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 20% to 25% from 2021 to 2023. It expects overseas sales to reach JPY30bn (U$272m) by 2023.
Despite the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year, POLA has been making significant strides in its overseas markets.
The growth of its overseas business is largely dependent on its sales in China, which have been growing at a rapid pace.
During the first quarter of 2021, the brand’s sales grew by 120% to approximately JPY1.35bn (U$12.2m) by the first half of the year, sales were up 96% year on year.
The was driven by the key launches in the Chinese market, including its bestselling skin serums and its premium B.A. range.
Opening doors urgent priority
Among its priorities, Pola Orbis said its most ‘urgent’ target is to expand consumer contact points in China.
By 2023, the company is aiming to have around 120 stores in China.
It also plans to emphasise on beauty consultation and facial treatments services, which it believes will strengthen POLA’s luxury brand positioning in the market.
At the same time, the company will work to strengthen the brand’s e-commerce and digital marketing capabilities to ramp up its brand awareness campaign. One of the channels the firm is planning to explore more is live commerce.
Lastly, POLA will focus on growing its travel retail business, which remains an important channel despite the sluggish international travel.
At the beginning of the year, the company established the Pola Orbis Travel Retail business (POTRL) in Hong Kong to grow its business in China’s travel retail market.
In July, the brand made its entry into Hainan Island, a popular Chinese holiday destination.
The surge of domestic travellers combined with the increased non-taxable allowance and the Chinese consumers’ appetite for luxury beauty products, helped to boost POLA’s travel retail sales.
The potential of the travel retail market is pushing the company to accelerate store openings. In July, CosmeticsDesign-Asia reported that POLA is aiming to launch at least another five doors on Hainan Island alone.

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia
Trans-Siberian heritage
Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.
In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays.
Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. To counter these effects, the bridge’s supports are equipped with special rollers that allow it to move.
The cultural center of Siberia
The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.
The large Siberian sea and ligers
Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .
Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.
Siberian Silicon Valley
Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.
For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .
Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.
Memento Mori
Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.
Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings.
Novosibirsk underground
Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.
The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.
How to get there
The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey.
Where to stay
There are many great hotels in Novosibirsk. Amongst the best include a four-star Doubletree hotel by Hilton , which is located near Lenin Square (per room from $200). After renovations and repairs, the congress-hotel Novosibirsk has improved (per room from $100) and is located across from the train station. Less expensive but of a similar standard is the four-star River Park hotel near Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, which costs $80 per night.
