Find Cheap Flight Deals
How to Book Cheap Flights?
- Fly during the working week Opting to take your flight during the working week can save you money. Flights departing over this period – especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays – are cheaper, mainly because these days are less popular to travel on.
- Have a look at airline websites Many airline websites have made it simpler to identify the inexpensive days to fly by displaying a "calendar view" booking system. This system allows you to scan prices ranging across the week that you are searching.
- Consider flights with less-popular departure times You may also get a bargain flight if you're willing to fly at an early hour. It may well be less expensive to fly at 6 am than at later times due to that time spot being less popular. The only problem you could face is getting to the airport at this time; make sure that public transport is running if you can't take a taxi or get a lift to the airport.
- Find a better price on the Trip.com app This may sound like I'm stating the obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who settle for a price without first shopping around and doing some research. We suggest you have a look for bargains on the Trip.com app. The Trip.com Save & Fly browser extension is a big help when learning how to get cheap flight tickets. While you're looking for airline tickets online, the extension notifies you of whether the exact same flight is available on Trip.com at a better price. It's completely free to install and use, and it takes some of the pressure off booking your tickets.
- Book early instead of waiting until the last minute Don't get fooled into thinking that last-minute deals are necessarily the best option for cheap flight tickets because they seldom are. The smart move is to book early, even as far as a year in advance if that is possible for the flight you require. Flight tickets have a tendency to be cheaper when they are first released – which is normally about a year before the flight – so have a look online as soon as the flights you want are available. This is particularly true if you are planning to travel during school holidays or to a destination where a famous event is taking place. These prices will increase rapidly, so book before the masses do. The price of a flight may drop again before re-climbing in the last few days before the flight takes off but they also may not. It's not worth the risk of waiting for a drop in prices only to be faced with higher prices for leaving it until the last minute. You also run the risk that the tickets will become sold out before you book yours, especially if it's a popular flight. If you're willing to be flexible, which is really the name of the game for cheap flight tickets, then have a look at a flight search engine as it may post flight tickets which get lower in price as the flight time approaches.
- Use a credit card in a wiser way There are a lot of advantages to paying for a flight with a credit card. One advantage is that you are protected when you make bigger purchases. For example, if you spend more than $100 on a flight, you will be covered for a refund if the airline or travel company goes out of business. This will not necessarily be the case if you pay with a debit card so check first. Credit cards are also more useful for spending in a foreign country and give you better exchange rates than you would get with your debit card. Certain credit cards will offer you air miles for each sum of money spent, thus saving you a bit more on your flight tickets. They may also give you a certain amount of cashback on the purchase of your flight ticket.
- Choose flights with a connection Booking a flight with a connection is nearly always a cheaper option, especially on longer-haul flights. The best thing to do is to uncheck the "non-stop only" option on your flight booking website's search engine, and have a look to see if the flights shown are any cheaper. However, there is a degree of risk involved in this method of getting cheap air tickets. If one of your earlier flights is delayed, this could mean that you miss a later connecting flight.
- Book package holidays which may offer cheap flight tickets If you book a package holiday, you are likely to get discounts on flights as well as accommodation. This is because travel companies book tickets in such large volumes that they get huge discounts. It is sometimes possible to get a whole holiday for less than the price of a regular flight.
- Be aware of hidden costs of cheap flights Be aware that cheap flight tickets with budget airlines can be deceptive. Very often there can be hidden costs, so check for air taxes, baggage fees, or seat selection costs before you buy. Airlines can also add travel insurance and other features on automatically without checking to see if you want them first. Travel light if it's possible. Carry-on baggage is usually free, but be sure to check the regulations on weight limitations first.

Ctrip eyes Asian and global presence with Trip.com’s diversifying services
The company is blazing a globalization trail through localizing its services in its targeted destinations, starting with the flourishing Asian neighbors.
ChinaTravelNews , Jerry Tang - As one of the world’s major online travel agencies, Ctrip is eyeing not only Chinese citizens’ booming domestic and outbound travel, but also the opportunity to be a game-changer in the global travel landscape.
The acquisitions of UK metasearch engine Skyscanner and tour recommendation site Trip.com are strategic steps toward its goal. Ctrip acquired Skyscanner for £1.4 billion in 2016, and snapped up Trip.com last November for an undisclosed sum and then transformed the site into a flights and hotels reservation platform.
Prior to the acquisitions, Ctrip already had its own multi-lingual Ctrip.com to service 300 million-plus registered users. Through Trip.com, the company is now offering global users services including flight and train search, hotel reservation and car rental.
Trip.com offers versions of 17 languages and most of them provide integrated services of flights, hotels and trains. In March, Ctrip launched its international car rental service on some versions of Trip.com, offering more than 130,000 rental outlets in which over 7 million cars are available for rent. Yuchen Wang, Ctrip Group Rental Car CEO, said car rental is "a key connection between airports and hotels".
Market penetration with air ticketing
Online travel companies generally offer flight reservation service with a low margin of around 3%-4%, and manage accommodation bookings to gain a lucrative 15%-18% profit, according to Brian Nowak of Morgan Stanley. In the case of Booking Holdings, currently the largest online travel group in the world with a market capitalization of around USD 100 billion, room nights sold in the first quarter of 2018 grew 13.2% to 196.8 million, while air tickets sold increased just 1.9% to 1.8 million.
But the Chinese players tend to do the opposite – as Ctrip has been doing well in the domestic market. Trip.com is also trying to penetrate the market through air ticketing and then channel consumers to the company’s other services.
Ctrip did not disclose Trip.com’s international air ticketing volume explicitly, but the company mentioned in its first-quarter conference call this year that Trip.com reported a “triple-digit growth” for its international air ticketing for the sixth consecutive quarter. The company said that the growth was based on a comparison with Ctrip’s international business operation before the Trip.com acquisition.
Traffic and conversion
Ctrip attributed Trip.com’s remarkable performance to Skyscanner’s direct booking initiatives that allow airline operators and distributors to upsell ancillary products by 100% and improve mobile conversion by 50%. It is a part of the travel fare aggregator’s effort in answer to IATA’s New Distribution Capability initiative.
As two key parts of Ctrip’s globalization blueprint, Skyscanner and Trip.com play two different roles – Trip.com serves as a one-stop travel service platform while Skyscanner continues as one of the world’s largest metasearch sites. Both the China-focused Ctrip.com and the overseas-focused Trip.com act as content providers on Skyscanner.com. While Trip.com is basically targeting Asian travelers from beyond mainland China, the majority of Skyscanner’s customers are westerners.
In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Ctrip CEO Jane Sun revealed that 3%-4% of Skyscanner’s bookings were contributed to Trip.com and the figure is poised to rise to around 20%-30% in the long run.
To consolidate its positioning as a one-stop travel purchase site, Trip.com has to gain enough traffic for potential customer conversion. To further dive into the Asian and global markets, Trip.com is not just diverting user traffic from Ctrip and Skyscanner, but also increasing external traffic from outside partners. Trip.com is having its inventory available for reservation on Trivago.com, an Expedia-affiliated hotel metasearch site, and then redirecting bookers back to Trip.com pages to complete payments.
Trip.com may also tap into the traffic of Booking.com, which is testing Booking.basic, a service that introduces third-party availability of hotels and bed-and-breakfasts, including those diverted from Agoda and Ctrip. In the future, a hotel reservation made on Booking.com may very well get a confirmation letter identifying Trip.com as the reservation provider.
Other than online user traffic, the company also needs to improve its global brand awareness through brick-and-mortar presence. Ctrip recently launched its first overseas concept store at the Dubai International Airport, providing travelers with multi-lingual service.
Globalizing inventory supply
Boosting inventory is as important as building traffic and conversion. That means Ctrip has to source global inventory and integrate the supply chains, develop end-to-end services and ensure online-offline connectivity.
In view of resource optimization, Trip.com and its parent Ctrip have to make full use of their local inventory in China to serve more foreign travelers. For overseas inventory, Ctrip is growing its hotel business development team to sign up suppliers in popular destinations in Asia, Europe and America.
Trip.com also provides airport pick-up/drop-off service in its Hong Kong operation, connecting the offering to its chauffeur service inventory under the brand of Skytransfer. As of May, Skytransfer has expanded its service to 200 airports in 150 cities in Asia, Europe and North America, and aims to cover 800 airports globally by the end of this year.
From Asia to the world
The company is blazing a globalization trail through localizing its services in its targeted destinations, starting with the flourishing Asian neighbors. Trip.com was officially presented as “Ctrip’s Asia Pacific focused one-stop travel booking service” in a February announcement about the company’s distribution partnership with South Korea’s railway operator. The deal is to encourage "customers from all over the world" to purchase high-speed rail tickets on the website. The company also plans to set up a call center in South Korea to enhance customer service.
Ctrip announced in May that Trip.com entered the Japan source market with the launch of the Trip.com Global Card in association with the Sumitomo-UnionPay partnership. Ms. Jane Sun, CEO of Ctrip, noted that the company has great opportunities in Japan, the second largest tourism market in Asia with 17.9 million outbound tourists in 2017. The company aims to grow its share of revenue generated from international market to 40%-50% in the next five years and Japanese travelers will be an indispensable customer source for achieving the goal.
But wooing Japanese tourists may prove a formidable task as Ctrip will have to take on local and traditional tourism giants like JTB Group, which has been in operation for more than a century. Since 2017, JTB has been maintaining an inventory agreement with Agoda, Booking Holdings’ Asia-based hotel reservation brand. Ctrip strives for a stronger foothold having set up an office in Tokyo since 2014, and forms alliances with local players.
Booking Holdings and Ctrip, as the world’s largest and second-largest online travel titans (by market capitalization), are frenemies: Booking Holdings had a 8.5% stake in Ctrip as of March 31, 2018, and injected USD 450 million in Meituan, a major domestic rival for Ctrip, in October 2017. Booking Holdings recently invested USD 500 million in Didi and teamed up with the Chinese car-hailing giant to allow Didi users to book hotels through Booking.com or Agoda.
Compared to Booking Holdings, which boasts an inventory of 1.5 million hotels around the world and has subsidiary brands including Booking.com and Agoda, Ctrip covers more than 1.2 million hotels globally and is determined to expand in Asia and beyond. This could be an uphill battle, as its biggest competitor’s key brands, Booking.com and Agoda, have both taken root in Asia for years.

Flights from Vancouver to Tokyo with Zipair are less than half the price of the cheapest options from other carriers.
Zipair, which is owned by Japan Airlines (JAL), launched from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on March 13, providing the cheapest non-stop flight between the region and Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT).
Zipair added more flights to the popular route following high interest from its new Vancouver market. It will offer the service five times weekly starting July 23 and continuing through Oct. 26.
How to save on Zipair flights from Vancouver to Japan
Flights to Japan from the Lower Mainland can cost under $1,000 for return, direct options even without a seat sale. Before Zipair, it was not possible to buy these fights for $1,000 unless they were on sale.
For example, a flight that departs Vancouver on Tuesday, Sept. 10, and returns on Tuesday, Sept. 17, costs $930 (see slide two).
Tickets must be booked separately with Zipair to score the lowest price, with tickets booked together costing slightly more at $953 (see slide three).
According to Google Flights, this price is about $1,452 cheaper than usual, with similar trips costing between $2,000 and $3,600.
Several date combinations from Sept. 10 through Oct. 16 offer the same low-cost price. Tickets booked before September cost significantly more, ranging between $1,450 and $1,620 for the cheapest options (see slide four).

China-Japan-South Korea summit expected to refocus on cooperation after four-year hiatus
* Leaders of China, Japan and South Korea will meet in Seoul from Sunday to Monday for a trilateral summit, more than four years after it was last held in 2019.
* In an ever-evolving global and regional landscape featuring economic uncertainty and geopolitical volatility, the three-way cooperative network in Northeast Asia, which was stalled due to geopolitical interferences and the pandemic, is more necessary than ever.
* Twenty-five years after its inception, the trilateral meeting has grown from an economy-focused gathering aimed at countering the financial crisis into a full-fledged, multi-tier mechanism that promotes cooperation in a spectrum of areas.
* The three countries have overcome economic, public health and other crises through mutual support, demonstrating the importance of trilateral cooperation as the frontrunner for the benefit of the region and the world.
SEOUL, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of China, Japan and South Korea will meet in Seoul from Sunday to Monday for a trilateral summit, more than four years after it was last held in 2019.
The resumed gathering through the established framework among the three neighbors is significant, as it heralds the trio's willingness to redirect focus on dialogue and cooperation and navigate through ruffled waters of the regional landscape and beyond.
People of the three countries hope that the meeting will boost trilateral cooperation, deliver win-win results and help to promote regional prosperity and stability.
MORE NECESSARY THAN EVER
Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will attend the trilateral summit meeting, the trilateral business summit and other events.
It is prevailingly believed that cooperation and solidarity among countries are desperately needed to address major challenges facing this region and the world, including protectionist trends, armed conflicts, supply chain restructuring and climate change.
In an ever-evolving global and regional landscape featuring economic uncertainty and geopolitical volatility, the three-way cooperative network in Northeast Asia, which was stalled due to geopolitical interferences and the pandemic, is more necessary than ever.
Trilateral relations have been facing fluctuations for a while, but recent high-level interactions indicate that the trio is making an effort to fix them.
Liu Qing, vice president of the China Institute of International Studies, said the resumption of the trilateral talks sends "a strong message" that the three countries are committed to resolving disputes through diplomatic means.
"It is hoped that the leaders of the three countries will discuss critical issues including rebuilding trust, expanding economic and trade cooperation as well as cultural exchanges, and strengthening current cooperation mechanisms," Liu said.
Though it is still early to predict concrete results, the convening of the meeting "will be an accomplishment in its own right," said the Japan Times.
Lee Hee-sup, secretary-general of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS), told Xinhua that the upcoming meeting "will serve as an opportunity to revive various cooperation projects and revitalize trilateral cooperation."
"The three countries need to share a clear perception that win-win-win through cooperation, not confrontation and conflict, is the only way forward for national interests and the happiness of their peoples," Lee noted.
WIDE-RANGING COOPERATION
Twenty-five years after its inception, the trilateral meeting has grown from an economy-focused gathering aimed at countering the financial crisis into a full-fledged, multi-tier mechanism that promotes cooperation in a spectrum of areas.
Analysts said that after a hiatus of more than four years, the forthcoming ninth edition of the meeting will focus on re-establishing and enhancing collaborative mechanisms.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that China stands ready to work with Japan and South Korea to implement the Trilateral Cooperation Vision for the Next Decade and other important common understandings.
Wang was talking about the document released at the eighth summit in China's Chengdu in December 2019, which mapped out the route for trilateral cooperation. The trio agreed to expand cooperation in environmental protection, climate change, health, aging population, scientific and technological innovation, sports, youth and other fields.
Strengthening people-to-people exchanges is expected to be a palpable focus for this year's summit.
Tourism, for instance, continues to be a main driver in this regard. According to Ctrip, an online travel agency in China, Japan ranked first among foreign countries in attracting Chinese tourists during the Golden Week holiday in May. Panda fever, meanwhile, has made panda-themed tours to China's Sichuan province a popular option for South Koreans.
Noting that the three neighbors share many cultural similarities, Lee said that the TCS, launched in 2011 to promote peace, prosperity and shared culture among the three nations, is ready to foster closer ties among their people.
The institution plans to expand youth exchanges through projects such as the youth summit, the youth ambassador program, and the youth speech contest this year.
Scholars predicted that strengthening supply chain stability, expanding markets, and increasing investment will remain high on this year's agenda to boost economic integration and enhance regional economic resilience.
Hwang Jae-ho, director of the Seoul-based Institute for Global Strategy and Cooperation, said attention is also on whether the three parties will be able to speed up the negotiations over the China-Japan-South Korea free trade agreement and enhance cooperation in supply chains.
Citing the semiconductor sector as an example, Liu said that despite pressures from the United States, China's industrial chain continues to benefit Japanese and South Korean companies.
While competition between the three countries remains a constant, the potential for cooperation is increasingly critical, as each of the three brings unique strengths to the table, Liu said.
PIVOTAL ROLE OF ASIA
The three countries have overcome economic, public health and other crises through mutual support, demonstrating the importance of trilateral cooperation as the frontrunner for the benefit of the region and the world.
As major economies in Asia, the trio accounted for 20 percent of the global population, 23.4 percent of the world's GDP, and 18.7 percent of world trade as of 2022, according to the latest data from the TCS.
Highlighting Asia's burgeoning economic power, Liu said the collaboration within the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) not only fosters economic cohesion in Asia, but also enhances the region's role as a vital engine for global growth.
"As Asia strengthens its economic ties and continues on this trajectory, its influence on the world stage is expected to expand, cementing the 21st century as the era of Asian ascendancy," he said.
Despite ups and downs in ties among the three countries due to outside interference and their historical factors, Hwang emphasized "the synergy that will be created if the three countries cooperate."
"Asia is re-emerging as a pivot of the world history," he said. "It is necessary to make pan-Asian discussions, in which Asians themselves can create visions and action plans for the future of Asia."
Lee noted the key role the three nations can play in safeguarding globalization and multilateralism.
"The three countries, which have achieved economic growth through free trade and globalization, need to cooperate closely for the protection of free trade and the multilateral trade systems in a world where the free trade order is being threatened," he said.
Liu said that by committing to regular dialogue and collaboration, the trio can address common challenges and leverage their collective strengths for mutual benefit.
"The renewed focus on cooperation sets a hopeful tone for the future, where Asia can become a cornerstone of peace and development in the global arena," Liu said.

The Best Economy Seats for Long-Haul Flights
By Jessica Puckett
Flying in economy class on a long-haul route is often a necessary sacrifice travelers make in order to afford a far-flung trip. But just thinking about spending hours in coach—with the cramped legroom, lack of recline , and crowded seating arrangements—is enough to send a shiver down any flier’s spine.
Fortunately, there are a handful of airlines that still offer decent space and comfortable seats on long-haul routes, even in their regular no-frills economy classes. Here, we’ve rounded up seven of the most comfortable economy seats available for long-haul flights, based on criteria like legroom pitch, recline depth, seat width, and the overall seating configuration of the economy cabin.
As these seats are still in regular economy, they don’t offer as much space as the more upscale products in premium economy cabins . The below selections may just have a few extra inches of space or recline over their competitors—but even an inch or two can make a world of difference on an hours-long flight, especially if you’re trying to sleep .
If you must fly coach on your next long-haul journey, these are the best economy seats on international flights. (Or, check out these affordable business class cabins that won't break the bank.)
JetBlue is one of the best US carriers when it comes to legroom, even in economy.
JetBlue Airbus A321
The New York-based carrier is one of the top US airlines in terms of legroom. Its Airbus A321 long-range planes, used for its transatlantic routes to Europe, are no exception. In regular economy, called “Core” on JetBlue, expect to see 32 inches of pitch and 18 inches of width, and three inches of recline at your seat. You’ll also find a headrest with adjustable wings and power outlets (though not enough for every passenger to have their own charging port). On planes that also feature Mint business class, the Core cabin has 102 seats in a 3-3 layout, so the one drawback is a potential lack of elbow room as the A321 is just a single-aisle plane.
Japan Airlines Airbus A350-1000
Much of the attention on board JAL’s new A350 plane, which debuted in January 2024, has been focused on its luxurious first and business class suites . But even the back of the plane offers fliers a respectable amount of comfort. In the regular economy cabin, seats offer about 34 inches of legroom pitch and more than 18 inches of seat width, making them one of the roomiest long-haul economy options on the market. Plus, in the fully upright position, the seats sit back at a deeper angle than standard economy seats—before you even engage the recline function, which also offers several more inches of tilt. Extra bells and whistles include a large 13-inch 4K entertainment screen, water bottle pouch and separate cupholder, power outlet and USB-A and -C charging ports. The only downside to the cabin is that the 155 seats in regular economy are laid out in a 3-3-3 configuration, which means more dreaded middle seats. But the rows are spaced far enough apart that economy passengers shouldn’t feel too cramped. You’ll find these jets operating nonstop routes from New York JFK and Dallas Fort Worth to Tokyo Haneda.
All Nippon Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners
Another Japanese carrier that offers one of the best economy seats on international flights is All Nippon Airways. Its coach cabin, especially aboard its Boeing 797-9 Dreamliners that fly between Tokyo and Los Angeles, offers relatively spacious seats with 34 inches of legroom pitch and 17.3 inches of width. The seats also come with a built-in footrest—a rarity outside of premium economy—plus several inches of standard recline. Instead of the seat simply tilting back, however, the seat pan also slides forward so as not to intrude too much on the passenger behind, giving each flier a bit more space. The seats are in a 3-3-3 layout, so avoiding the tight middle seat could be tough; though extra features like universal PC power ports and USB ports at every seat, thick cushioning, and a headrest that adjusts up and down, should help ease the pain.
The high ceilings and wide body of the double-decker Airbus A380 jets help to create an airy, spacious feel.
Emirates Airbus A380
Emirates’ double-decker Airbus A380 jets are the stuff of aviation legend—even on the lower level in plain old economy. The cabin class offers seats with 34 inches of pitch, 18 inches of width, and a solid four inches of recline. With a total of 399 standard economy seats configured in a 3-4-3 layout, the cabin sounds like a crunch. But keeping in mind what an enormous, superjumbo jet the A380 actually is, with higher ceilings and a wider footprint than most jets, those numbers start to sound a lot less stress-inducing. In fact, fliers who’ve experienced the A380 in economy consistently say that the cabin has an airy and spacious feel, despite its massive passenger capacity. There’s also a padded adjustable headrest, a 13.3-inch entertainment screen, and over-the-ear headphones provided at each spot. From the US, you can catch Emirates A380s flying from Houston , Los Angeles , San Francisco , New York JFK, and Washington Dulles to Dubai, and also on special fifth freedom routes , like between New York JFK and Milan.
Singapore Airlines Airbus A380
Singapore’s economy class aboard its Airbus A380 planes is another spacious cabin, even if you’re riding all the way at the back of the superjumbo jet. The pitch in regular economy is a respectable 32 inches, and seats are a roomy 19 inches wide. When it’s time to relax after meal service, you’ll find the seatback able to recline six inches, which is quite a deep angle rarely found outside of premium economy class. (But don’t worry, the seatback entertainment screens have adjustable angles so you can keep watching even if the person in front of you fully tilts back.) Just like aboard Emirates’ A380, Singapore’s economy class on this double-decker plane is laid out in a 3-4-3 seating chart, but with the A380’s wider body and higher ceilings, it shouldn’t feel too crowded. Extra touch points at the seats adding to the convenience and comfort include a cup holder to free up the tray table space, phone storage, and a soft six-way headrest. You can find the A380 on the airline's long-haul routes from Singapore to Hong Kong , London , Tokyo, and Melbourne, as well as its fifth freedom flights between New York and Frankfurt, among other destinations.

The exterior rows of Hawaiian's A330 main cabin are ideal for couples hoping to avoid the middle seat, thanks to its 2-4-2 configuration.
Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330
These efficient Airbus jets fly the majority of Hawaiian’s long-haul routes, like its nonstop flights from New York and Boston to Honolulu (which may not technically be international flights, but at more than 11 hours each they are two of the longest domestic flights in the US). Seats in the A330’s Main Cabin offer 31 inches of pitch, which is quite a bit tighter than what other airlines offer on this list. But if you can score a seat on the edges of the cabin, your spot is likely to feel a bit more spacious. That’s because the rows are laid out in a 2-4-2 configuration, making the seats nearest the windows on either side a prime pick for couples or other travel duos for a comfortable ride to and from the islands. All 192 economy seats also offer 17.6 inches of seat width and a four-inch recline. If you’re worried about legroom, you could spring for one of the 68 Extra Comfort seats, which offer 36 inches of pitch, but those usually cost a couple hundred dollars extra on the airline’s longer routes.
Delta Boeing 767-400ER
With an average age clocking in at more than 23 years old, Delta’s Boeing 767-400ERs are certainly older planes. But when it comes to comfort in economy class, don’t count out these workhorse jets that fly many of Delta’s transatlantic routes out of Atlanta and New York JFK, among other long hauls. The Main Cabin on these old-reliables accommodate 156 seats that each offer 31 to 32 inches of legroom pitch, 18 inches of seat width, and three to four inches of recline. What’s more, the seating chart is configured in a 2-3-2 layout, eliminating middle seats on the edges of the cabin for more breathing space near the windows. Additional features like an adjustable headrest, USB ports, and a sizable entertainment screen make the flight feel smoother, even from the cheapest seats.

- Thriving tourism boosts cultural exchanges among China, Japan, S. Korea
- China, Japan and South Korea agreed at their ninth trilateral summit here on Monday to designate the year 2025 and 2026 as the China-Japan-South Korea Cultural Exchange Year.
Geographically close and culturally connected, the three East Asian neighbors boast robust people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and thriving tourism is giving a further boost to interactions among their people.
Masato Takashima, a Japanese travel magazine writer who recently paid a five-day visit to China, was deeply impressed by people's love for traditional Chinese attire Hanfu.
"Chinese Hanfu culture is amazing. In Xi'an and Luoyang, people don't just wear Hanfu at tourist sites, they incorporate it into their daily lives. You can see people wearing it on the streets. It gives you a sense of traveling through time," Takashima told Xinhua.
"The article I wrote for a famous travel magazine is about to be published. I hope more Japanese people can understand the prosperous and beautiful China," said the Japanese writer.
Cultural affinity and similarities in traditions make China an attractive destination for Japanese and South Korean tourists, some of whom are fascinated by the diverse landscapes of the vast nation.
"The buildings in Shanghai are tall and gorgeous, and the people there are friendly," Kim Rin, a South Korean tourist who recently traveled to China with her boyfriend, told Xinhua.
The number of South Korean tourists traveling to China has increased significantly lately. Figures from South Korea's largest travel agency Hana Tour showed that bookings for package tours to China in May increased by 608 percent year-on-year.
Apart from large cities like Beijing and Shanghai, places like Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province and Changbai Mountain in Jilin Province are also among the most favored choices by South Korean travelers.
The fascination with pandas is also attracting visitors to China. After Fu Bao, the first giant panda born in South Korea returned to China, some South Korean travel agencies launched "panda tourism" itineraries, taking tourists to China's Sichuan Province to see the adorable pandas.
"I am looking forward to my next trip to China, and I hope to visit cities with more local characteristics," Kim said after concluding her trip to China's modern metropolis of Shanghai.
While many Japanese and South Korean tourists love to visit China, the two countries are also favored destinations for Chinese holidaymakers.
Latest data from Ctrip, a leading travel platform in China, showed that Japan and South Korea are among the top three international destinations for Chinese tourists during the Labor Day holiday.
In the first quarter of 2024, South Korea received around 3.4 million foreign tourists, of which 1.01 million were from China, ranking first among all foreign tourists, government figures showed.
Xu Qing, a 76-year-old Chinese tourist who recently traveled to Seoul with her daughter and granddaughter, told Xinhua: "South Korea is very close to China. It is very convenient to travel in Seoul."
"The people here are very friendly. The city is very clean and very safe," she said.
China is also an important source of tourists for Japan and the purchasing power of Chinese visitors is loved by business operators in the tourism sector.
Data released by the Japan Tourism Agency revealed that Chinese tourists in Japan had the highest average per capita spending among all foreign visitors in the first quarter, amounting to 293,100 yen (1,867 U.S. dollars).
Apart from shopping, Chinese tourists are getting increasingly focused on experiencing the local culture and traditions, Japanese media reported.
A recent article in The Yomiuri Shimbun said that Chinese tourists visiting Japan seem to be changing their spending habits and are more focused on experiencing the Japanese culture.
Held after a hiatus of more than four years, the trilateral summit in Seoul is expected to add momentum to cooperation among the three East Asian neighbors. Cultural exchanges and economic and trade cooperation will get a further boost.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The Japanese and South Korean leaders raised sensitive topics like Taiwan, North Korea and the South China Sea as well as ways to boost cooperation when they individually met China’s premier Sunday on the eve of a fuller trilateral meeting.
It was unclear how serious discussions the three leaders had on those thorny issues, which are not among the official agenda items for Monday’s three-way gathering in Seoul, the first of its kind in more than four years.
No major announcement is expected from the meeting, but observers say that just resuming the highest-level talks among the three Northeast Asian neighbors is a good sign and suggests they are intent on improving relations. Their trilateral meeting was supposed to happen annually but it had stalled since the last one in December 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and complex ties among the three countries.
After meeting Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters that he expressed serious concerns about the situations in the South China Sea, Hong Kong and China’s northwestern Xinjiang region. He said Japan is closely monitoring developments on self-governed Taiwan.
He referred to China’s military assertiveness in the South China Sea, clampdowns of pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong and human rights abuses against minorities in Xinjiang. Last week, China also launched a large military exercise around Taiwan to show its anger over the inauguration of the island’s new president who refuses to accept its insistence that Taiwan is part of China.
During a separate meeting with Li, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, on his part, asked China, as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, to contribute to promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula, while speaking about North Korea’s nuclear program and its deepening military ties with Russia, according to Yoon’s office.
Yoon’s office said Yoon and Kishida in their separate meeting expressed worries about North Korea’s nuclear program and agreed to strengthen their cooperation with the United States.
South Korea, Japan and the U.S. have long urged China — North Korea’s major ally and economic pipeline — to use its leverage to persuade the North to abandon its nuclear ambitions. But China is suspected of avoiding fully enforcing U.N. sanctions on North Korea and sending clandestine aid shipments to help its impoverished neighbor stay afloat.
The three leaders also discussed how to bolster economic and other cooperation.
Yoon and Li agreed to launch a new South Korean-Chinese dialogue channel involving senior diplomats and defense officials in mid-June. They also agreed to restart negotiations to expand the free trade agreement and reactivate dormant bodies on personnel exchanges, investments and other issues, according to Yoon’s office.
Chinese state media reported Li told Yoon that the two countries should safeguard the stability of their deeply intertwined industrial and supply chains and resist turning economic and trade issues into political and security-related issues.
Kishida said he and Li reaffirmed Japan and China will seek progress on various areas to promote mutually beneficial relations. Kishida and Yoon also said they agreed to further strengthen ties, which have warmed significantly since last year following an earlier setback over issues related to Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.
South Korean officials said that a joint statement after Monday’s trilateral meeting will cover the leaders’ discussion on cooperation in areas like people-to-people exchanges, climate change, trade, health issues, technology and disaster responses.
The three Asian nations are important trading partners and their cooperation is key to promoting regional peace and prosperity. They together make up about 25% of global gross domestic product. But the three countries have been repeatedly embroiled in bitter disputes over a range of historical and diplomatic issues originating from Japan’s wartime atrocities. China’s rise and a U.S. push reinforce its Asian alliances have also significantly impacted their three-way ties in recent years.
Experts say South Korea, China and Japan now share a need to improve ties. South Korea and Japan want better ties with China because it is their biggest trading partner. China, for its part, likely believes a further strengthening of the South Korea-Japan-U.S. cooperation would hurt its national interests.
China, meanwhile, has always sent its premier, the country’s No. 2 official, to the trilateral leaders’ meeting since its first session in 2008. Observers say China earlier argued that under then-collective leadership, its premier was chiefly in charge of economic affairs and best suited to attend the meeting, which largely focuses on economic issues.
But they say China may face more demands for President Xi Jinping to attend because he has concentrated power in his hands and defied the norms of collective leadership.
