Best places to celebrate Onam festival in Kerala

My first introduction to Onam is a tale from overseas while studying in Britain. It was a cultural gathering at Trafalgar Square with stage performances, food stalls, foot-thumping music and the coming together of NRI Malayalis and Non-Malayalis to celebrate this festival of harvest far away from their motherland. Years later, I embarked on a journey of my own to trace the origins of Onam festival in Kerala and find the best places to celebrate.

Onam Festival in Kerala: Homecoming of a King

It is 8 am when I arrive in Kochi, Kerala’s commercial capital and biggest tourist hub. The streets are unusually empty. I presume commerce is yet to begin, unlike Mumbai, a fast-paced city that never sleeps. However, well into the afternoon, when the scene remains unaltered, I enquire with my driver, who tells me that Onam is off-season in Kerala. Malayali families stay home and celebrate the Onam festival in Kerala with their loved ones. Men dress up in crisp white mundus (lungi) and apply chandanam (sandalwood) on their foreheads. Women exude grace in their cream and gold sarees with jasmine flowers tucked in their hair. It’s an auspicious time to purchase gold for the house. Varieties of ghee-drenched sweets are prepared, and elaborate rituals are performed for the next ten days.

I notice huge billboards on the streets of a smiling man with a handlebar moustache, a golden crown and an umbrella. He’s everywhere, selling everything from gold to toothpaste. It’s the mythical King Mahabali, and Onam is the festival that marks his homecoming to Kerala .

Onam festival in Kerala – History

If legends are believed, Mahabali was an Asura (demon) king. He was a compassionate ruler whose reign was considered the golden period of Kerala. However, Lord Indra grew concerned about King Mahabali’s popularity, so he sent Lord Vishnu in the form of a young Brahmin monk – Lord Vamana – to banish Mahabali and send him to pataal (hell). Mahabali appealed to the gods to let him return to Kerala once a year to ensure that his people were still happy and content. His wish was granted, and King Mahabali visits his people and his land during the Onam festival in Kerala each year.

Pookalam (Rangoli) during Onam festival in Kerala

I arrive at my homestay in Fort Kochi, where I am greeted to an elaborate flower rangoli at the doorstep. My host tells me that the floral decoration is called Pookalam – it marks the beginning of the Onam festivities. The term is local for flower (Poo) and artwork (kalam). At the break of dawn, Malayali women bathe and perform their morning prayers before creating these floral decorations in front of their houses to welcome King Mahabali. The rangoli decorations continue during the ten days leading up to Onam. Several pookalam competitions are organised during this period among housing societies, corporate offices and shopping malls.

Thrikkakara – Birth place of Onam festival in Kerala

I take a cab the next morning, to visit the temple town of Thrikkakara , 20 kilometres from Kochi. My focal point of interest here is the Vamanamoorthy Temple (also called the Thrikkakara Temple). Legend has it that Lord Vamana sent King Mahabali to pataal by placing his foot on Mahabali’s head – the temple is located at the site, where the incident took place.

A special flag hoisting ceremony is organised on Atham, the first day that marks the beginning of the festivities at the temple. Celebrations will continue for the next ten days, but the mainstay is the grand procession, Pakalpooram, on the day before Thiru Onam, the tenth and most important day. The deity of Lord Vamana is carried around the temple complex on an elephant, followed by a parade of more elephants, all covered in nettipattam (a golden head accessory). The air is thick with the scent of fresh flowers, incense, and coconut oil, and the entire mood is distinctly festive.

Each day, the celebration will culminate with a grand feast called the onasadya , a traditional vegetarian meal of numerous courses served on a banana leaf. The temple kitchen is an organised chaos where volunteers dish out meals to thousands of devotees at breakneck speed. The meal is wholesome – from Avial (vegetables in a coconut gravy) to Olan (white pumpkin and red gram stew), Payasam (Jaggery-based dessert with thickened milk), Kerala Matta rice, Upperi (banana chips), Sarkara varatti (Jaggery coated banana chips) and more.

Thrissur for chasing Onam festival in Kerala

Shortly, I move from Kochi towards Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala to continue my Onam trail. There’s a visible difference between both the towns, Thrissur being more mellowed down. I befriend the General Manager, Melvin, at my hotel, who makes it his mission to help me chase the Onam celebrations in Thrissur. Melvin’s local knowledge is of great help as he shares with me venue details and timings for celebrations on the go – many of these would hardly ever find a mention on the internet.

Kummattikali during Onam festival in Kerala

I begin Day 3 with a visit to a suburban neighbourhood to watch the Kummattikali festival . Malayali men are dressed from top-to-toe in a grass-clad costume, wearing colourful masks (Kummatti) of characters from the Hindu scriptures like Krishna and Narada. They take to the streets entertaining the crowds with their antics and collecting alms from house to house. I merrily join in their procession and find myself moving to the beats of the chenda melum (percussion instrument). The jolly energy in the air is contagious.

Later that evening, I head to a village on the outskirts of Thrissur. Melvin tells me I can watch a snake boat race , another important cultural symbol of Onam. Villages form their teams and sign up for a boat race that can win them cash prizes and the coveted title of champions of the local district. The host’s running commentary on the loudspeaker in Malayalam is incomprehensible, but I’m sucked into the tense atmosphere, craning my neck among the sea of people standing by the backwaters to watch this nail-biting race to the finish line.

I’m told that the oldest and best snake boat races during the Onam festival in Kerala are organised in the Aranmula village on the banks of the River Pampa in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, 50 kilometres from Alleppey. Palliyodams, Aranmula’s unique snake boats make for a majestic sight, as teams move in pairs skillfully mirroring each other in a spectacular race that often leaves the crowd spellbound.

On the fourth and last day of Onam, I head to Swaraj Circle in the heart of Thrissur city, where the annual Puli-kali or tiger dance parade takes place. The Maharaja of Cochin introduced this folk dance some 200 years ago, as he wanted the celebrations of Onam to reflect a wild fervour. Hundreds of men spend hours painting intricate tiger markings on their bodies. Later, they take to the streets, recreating the tiger’s prowling movements with flair. Gigantic floats are decorated that look surreal – from a multi-coloured lion to a towering Shiva sculpture standing over a demon. There’s a wedding scene being enacted at one corner, while Mowgli and Bageera are having a jolly good time at the other end. Garuda, Draupati and a ‘hulk’ styled Hanuman show up to amuse the crowd. By the end, the best costume and the grandest float would be rewarded with hefty prizes.

After four days of soaking in the cultural revelry, I reach the end of my Onam festival trail and return home a happy traveller, fascinated by Lord Mahabali’s story of homecoming to visit his people. There’s a reason they call Kerala ‘God’s own country’!

How to reach Kochi

Kochi International Airport is fairly busy with many domestic and international flights from major cities. From the airport, you can take a taxi or a rental car to reach your destination. Kochi also has two major railway stations: Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town – both are well-connected to various cities in India. For intercity travel between Kochi and Thrissur, we took the Kerala State Transport (KSRTC) buses that reached us in 2.5 hours. You can also hire a rental cab , the distance between the two cities is 85 km or two hours via NH544. There are also frequent train services between Kochi and Thrissur that takes about 1-2 hours.

In Kochi, we stayed at Forte Kochi in the Fort Kochi area. It’s a great boutique hotel and you get to stay in the most happening area of Kochi. Eighth Bastian CGH Earth is another option if you want to stay in the Fort Kochi area.

I highly suggest staying in the Fort Kochi area where all the tourist action is. You may find cheaper hotels in Ernakulam but it is a business district, away from Fort Kochi.

Things to do in Thrissur

1. Explore the ancient Vadakkunnathan Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the oldest and largest Shiva temples in Kerala.

2. If you visit Thrissur in April or May, don’t miss the spectacular Thrissur Pooram festival. It is one of the most famous temple festivals in Kerala, featuring grand elephant processions, fireworks, and traditional music performances

3. Do a short road trip to Athirappilly Waterfalls, one of the largest waterfalls in Kerala, where the film Bahubali was shot.

4. Visit the nearby town of Guruvayur, known for the famous Guruvayur Temple – an important pilgrimage site for the Hindus.

Where to stay in Thrissur

In Thrissur, we stayed at Hotel Merlin International very close to Thrissur Railway station. The manager, Melvin, was super helpful in suggesting local Onam celebrations we could check out. If you have a slightly higher budget, Hyatt Regency or Joys Palace are great options.

Practical travel tips for chasing Onam festival in Kerala

1. Onam follows the Malayalam calendar. The most accurate information you will find is on the Kerala tourism website . That said, don’t completely rely on the information available on the internet. Check with a local.

2. Both Kochi and Thrissur are known for their vibrant festivals and cultural events. Check the local calendar to see if any festivals or events coincide with your visit. Thrissur Pooram in Thrissur and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Kochi are two major events that attract a large number of visitors.

3. Negotiate prices with vendors if necessary and be aware of potential scams. One example are the fishermen at the Chinese fishing nets that offer to operate the pulley and ask you for money later.

4. Dress appropriately when you visit religious sites including churches. Generally, avoid sleeveless and shorts.

Onam is the biggest and most important festival of the year in Kerala. It's a harvest festival that also celebrates the homecoming of mythical King Mahabali and marks the start of the new year on the local Malayalam calendar. A huge range of activities take place across the state for over two weeks. Here are six of the best Kerala Onam festival attractions for you to enjoy.

In addition, keep an eye out for stunning Onam pookalams (floral carpets) laid out for the occasion.

Thripunithura Athachamayam

There isn't a more colorful start to Onam than the Athachamayam festival, which kicks off celebrations on Atham -- 10 days before the main day of Onam. The festival features a street parade accompanied by decorated elephants and floats, musicians, and various traditional Kerala art forms. It has interesting beginnings, which can be traced back to the Maharaja of Kochi. He used to march from Tripunithura to Vamanamoorthy Temple in Thrikkakara (also known as Thrikkakara Temple), which according to legend is where Onam originated. This modern day festival follows in his footsteps. The whole town gets festive with decorations, street stalls, and floral arrangements. Teams also compete in a floral rangoli (pookalam) competition.

Where: Tripunithura, near Ernakulam in greater Kochi.
When: August 12, 2021. Various other cultural events continue at Layam Ground in the 10 days leading up to Onam.

Celebrations at Thrikkakara Temple

Thrikkakara Temple is particularly associated with Onam. Celebrations commence there on Atham with a special flag hoisting ceremony and continue for the 10 days with cultural, music, and dance performances. A highlight is the grand procession, pakalpooram , on the day before Thiru Onam (the main day of Onam). The main deity, Vamana, is carried around the temple grounds on an elephant, followed by a group of caparisoned elephants.

Kerala Tourism's Onam Celebrations

Kerala Tourism puts on a huge week-long Onam celebration at a multitude of venues in the state's capital, Trivandrum. The festivities include stage shows (drama and classical dance), folk art, food stalls, and handicraft fairs. It all culminates in a grand parade on the last day, complete with floats and decorated elephants. The East Fort-Vellayambalam stretch in Trivandrum is also beautifully illuminated for the occasion.

Food, glorious food! It wouldn't be Onam without a festival feast. Traditionally, it's referred to as Onasadya, and it consists of an extensive range of specialties (often more than 20 different curries) dished up on a banana leaf. You won't need to look far to find a restaurant in Kerala that serves this tasty treat. Of course, it's best enjoyed eating with your hand ! Kerala Tourism's Responsible Tourism Mission also operates an Experience Ethnic Cuisine program whereby tourists can dine on traditional Onam feasts in selected local homes, most of which are in and around Kochi, throughout September. It's possible to say in homes as well.

Pulikkali Tiger Play

Hundreds of grown men dressed up as tigers and dancing to the beat of traditional percussion instruments are an unexpected feature of Onam celebrations. Although this display of the art of Pulikkali may be one of the quirkiest festivals in India , it's actually very serious business! You may be surprised to discover that it takes around four hours to completely decorate one person. As part of the process, all body hair needs to be removed to enable the skin to be painted in intricate detail. After the festival is over, performers wash themselves with kerosene to get the paint off. There are prizes for the best dressed tiger, and best dance. Grrrr.

Aranmula Snake Boat Race

Snake boat races are another highlight of the Kerala Onam festival. The Aranmula Boat Race is not only the most famous one, but it's also among the oldest snake boat races in Kerala. Unlike the others, the focus is more on tradition than competition. The event has religious significance as it commemorates the installation of the idol of Lord Krishna at the nearby Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. Almost 50 boats take part in the race, which starts in the afternoon after religious rituals are completed.

Where: Along the Pamba River near Parthasarthy Temple in Aranmula. It’s half an hour by road from Changannur railway station.

Onam in Onattukara What about a trip to Onattukara, the land of Onam? Onattukara is a heritage place replete with myths, and legend has it that Mahabali had feasted at Onattukara, which is at the heart of Mavelikara in the Alappuzha district. As this place is dotted with many temples, you can also pay obeisance at these places of worship. Some of the famous temples in Onattukara are Kandiyoor Mahadeva Temple, Chettikulangara Devi Temple and Padanilam Parabrahma Temple.

Onattukara was a native state that had been in existence since the 12th century. Mavelikara, which was known as the capital of Onattukara, was also the farming hub of Kerala that provided the agricultural produce for the entire state to have a sumptuous feast. It is said that Mavelikara got its name after the people of the region served ‘onasadya’ to Mahabali also known as Maveli. The festivities conducted in Onattukara on the 28th day after Thiruvonam include an Onam carnival, ‘kalakettu’ (a parade with bull effigies) and ‘velakali’ (a traditional martial dance), among others.

Alappuzha Alappuzha, which has earned the sobriquet of Venice of the East, is a favourite tourist destination for all seasons. The placid lake waters of Alappuzha are famous for the annual snake boat race, which is held in September. After the monsoon rains, the captivating Alappuzha is blanketed in lush green. It is also the best time to meander through the backwaters in the comfort of a houseboat.

Mattupatty Dam Mattupetty is a small hilly town in the Idukki district that is situated close to 1,700m above sea level. This pretty place is known for its impressive dam and alluring lake. One can visit Mattupetty throughout the year as the weather is quite pleasant with intermittent rains and mist hanging in the air.

Bekal Fort The Bekal fort is an imposing one in the north Kerala district of Kasaragod. The medieval fort, which is made of laterite, is spread across 35 acres of land on the shores of the Arabian Sea and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kerala. The age-old structure houses an Anjaneya Temple, and a mosque, built by Tip Sultan, the son of Hyder Ali, could be found outside the fort.

Konni Elephant Reserve and Adavi eco-tourism centre The high points of Pathanamthitta, which boasts of pristine forest canopy over half of its entire area, are the Konni elephant training hub and the Adavi eco-tourism centre. Historically speaking, King Mahabali was one of the greatest rulers of Kerala and if ancient texts are to be believed, then during the reign of Mahabali, the people of Kerala enjoyed the best time. One day, Lord Vishnu went to the king and asked for a piece of land where he could keep just his three steps. The King agreed to the request of Lord Vishnu but then Vishnu grew in size and covered all his land in just two steps.

When Lord Vishnu asked where should he keep his third step, Mahabali offered that the Lord can place his third foot on his head. Lord Vishnu was quite impressed with the devotion of king Mahabali and while placing his step on his head and sending him below the earth, he also gave him a blessing that Mahabali would be able to visit his kingdom once a year. Therefore, every year the people of Kerala celebrate the homecoming of King Mahabali on the day of Onam.

Onam festival is also the time of rice harvesting and it symbolizes the homecoming of king Mahabali. This festival marks the beginning of the Malayalam New Year, Kollavarsham and it is celebrated for 10 days.

Onam is one of those festivals where you can feel the excitement in the air of Kerala for 10 days. This official new year of Malayali Hindus marks the beginning of Chingam, the first month of the year according to Malayalam calendar and August and September according to Gregorian calendar.

The major attraction here is the Pakalpooram- the main deity, Vamana, is carried around the temple grounds on decorated elephants. This is done before Thiru Onam.

Pulikali tiger play is all about men being dressed as tigers and dancing their way out on streets of Kerala. And let me tell you that these performers get their body painted. Competitions are held for the best dressed tiger.
Snake Boat Race: Snake boat racing is one of the major tourist attractions in Kerala during Onam. On river Pampa, 50 boats take part in an exciting competition. Aranmula Snake Boat Race which concludes at the famous Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple also commemorates the installation of Lord Krishna in the shrine. This boat race is not just one of a kind but also the oldest kind.
Traditional Food in Onam: On the main day of Onam, every restaurant in Kerala will be thrilled to serve this traditional yet mouth-watering dish-Onasadya or Onam Sadya. Not just eat-inns but most of the houses also prepare this dish. Onam Sadya is the preparation of 26 food items served in a single sitting. Onam: the greatest festival in kerala.

The greatest festival in my home country of India is Onam , celebrated in Chingam (Malayalam month), between August and September. King Mahabali was a popular ruler who controlled Kerala during a time of peace and abundance. It is believed that Mahabali visits every year during Chingam. It is a 10-day festival, and each day has its unique meaning.

I am very excited to celebrate Onam every year by gathering with family, relatives, and friends; this enriches relationships and bonds among us. This has brought me a lot of joy since my childhood. I have many memories of Onam. The four things I will share in this article are flowers, food, activities, and the arts.

The central attraction of Onam is Pookalam (floral carpet). People create a round Pookalam in front of their house with different flowers. On the first day, it is a small Pookalam, then people add more to it each day, and on the final day, it would be a big one. Regardless of age, everyone in my town enjoys doing Pookalam. Most people share their flowers they have grown with neighbors.

The picture below was taken in 2020; this is the Pookalam that my friends and I created at my home with various flowers, which took almost 4 hours to complete. It is a great memory in my life.

The traditional feast that people make on the last day of Onam is Onasadhya , which is very delicious. Usually, this meal is served on a banana leaf with a lot of vegetarian dishes. Paayasam, served as the last item in the feast, is sweet and has several flavors. On that day, many relatives and friends gathered at my home and had a feast together.

Activities:

Pulikali (Tiger dance) is a person who paints themselves as a tiger and performs an energetic dance.

Vallam Kali

Vallam Kali is known as a boat race in Kerala and the main boat is Chundan Vallam . This boat is so long, it resembles a snake. The boat is made of thick wood. This race is held by teams and many people from various places gather to watch this. Whenever I watched the boat race, I became over-excited and very curious to know who was going to win the race. The unity among the members is the success of the race. One of the main boat races in Kerala is the Nehru Trophy; here’s a video of this race from 2021:

Traditional Art Forms:

Thiruvathira kali.

Thiruvathira Kali (round dance) depicts the cultural richness of my state, Kerala. During Onam, this traditional dance is necessary for every program. It is typically performed by a group of women and moves in circular ways in each step with traditional music. They often wear traditional sarees (set sarees) with golden borders and jewelry and Jasmine on their hair. It is not only a dance but also a cultural form of art that enhances Kerala tradition and culture.

I have many memories with this Kathakali, which includes dance, drama, and music. When I was in 6th grade, my family and I went to Alappuzha to watch this art form. It is very interesting to watch; a person with an enormous dress with great makeup performs a story in front of the audience.

Onam is the festival of joy and happiness . I would suggest everyone from a different culture experience Onam once in their life.

The list of dishes start from a basic banana served on a banana leaf, followed by mouth-watering foods like Carrot Beans Thoran, Madhura Curry, Ada Prathaman, Palada Payasam and Pulissery to name a few.
