Visiting Japan in October: The Best of Autumn in Japan

Why visit Japan in October - temple with orange bridge

The best travel experience of my life was visiting Japan in October. As a fall foliage fanatic, I loved seeing the country decorated in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. And when you add in pleasant weather, cheaper travel, and traditional festivals, autumn in Japan becomes the ideal time for a trip.

I’m sure cherry blossom fans are shocked to hear this bold statement! However, I’ve been to Tokyo and Kyoto for sakura season, and I still feel the fall season in Japan is superior.

I could fill an entire book about why you should travel to Japan in October! But that would be impractical, so I’ll offer you this list instead:

  • Magical walks through forests of red and gold
  • Hot onsen baths on crisp evenings
  • Centuries-old festivals with traditional events like horseback archery
  • Pumpkin-filled taiyaki
  • Comfortable, relatively dry weather across the country
  • Fewer crowds at tourist attractions and popular cities
  • Cheaper accommodation and airfare (compared to cherry blossom season and summer)

Is it cold in Japan in October?

Japan is a multi-island nation with a very diverse climate. October in Hokkaido looks (and feels) very different from October in Okinawa.

That being said, October is the rare month where weather is pleasant across the entire country. Even in the northern parts of Japan, high temperatures hover around 16°C/60°F.

As you head south, temps continue to rise. Central Japan (around Tokyo/Kyoto) and Kyushu see highs around 22°C/71°F, while Okinawa is a warm 25°C/77°F.

However, elevation plays a big role in how cold it gets. For example, the mountain areas of Kamikochi National Park are far cooler than nearby Matsumoto city, especially when the sun goes down.

Will I see fall foliage in Japan in October?

Togakushi Mirror Lake with fall foliage and white clouds.

As I mentioned above, Japan is spread across multiple climates. This means that not all areas will get autumn foliage at the same time.

Koyo (fall foliage in Japanese) starts at Hokkaido in early October, and spreads south towards central Honshu over the course of the month. Mountain areas like Nagano will get autumn colors sooner because of the cooler temperatures.

By the end of October, autumn foliage will have peaked in places like Nikko and Aomori, but will have just kicked off in Tokyo and Kyoto.

This post will cover some of the best places to see autumn leaves in Japan. But to create your ultimate momijigari (leaf-peeping) trip, you should use an updated forecast .

The current year’s weather affects when the leaves start turning, so always check the koyo forecast before planning your itinerary!

Woman in red yukata representing what to wear in Japan in October.

Layers are the secret to dressing for autumn weather in Japan. Even in the northern cities, the midday highs in October are often warm enough for t-shirts and pants. But temperatures drop during the mornings and evenings, making a jacket essential.

I’m a big fan of minimalist packing and carry-on only travel. I managed to fit a week’s worth of clothes into my Tortuga Setout backpack, and they worked for 20°C/70°F days in Tokyo and 7°C/45°F evenings in the Nagano mountains.

Here’s what to include in your fall Japan packing list:

  • Lightweight tops
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Pants/Long skirts
  • Lightweight* rain jacket (I bring my Columbia Waterproof Jacket on every trip)
  • Light gloves ( convertible mittens or touchscreen-friendly gloves are ideal)
  • Comfortable, closed-toed shoes (versatile white Adidas Classics are my favorite)
  • 1 dressier outfit (if planning to eat at a nice restaurant)
  • *Heavier jacket required if heading to Hokkaido or mountainous areas

Togakushi forest path with fall foliage during October in Japan.

Nestled in the mountains of central Honshu, Nagano prefecture is an ideal place to spend October in Japan. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, with waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic viewpoints galore.

Around mid-October, fall foliage spreads through the region, and peaks towards the end of the month. While nearby Tokyo is still pretty green, cities like Karuizawa and Komoro are awash in red and gold.

Luckily, Nagano is only an 80-120 minute train ride away from Tokyo, so you can easily take a leaf-peeping day trip.

Some of the best things to do in Nagano include visiting Shirato Falls in Karuizawa , hiking the Togakushi Shrine path, and watching the famous snow monkeys of Jigokudani take an onsen bath.

Kamikochi forest river path with distant mountain view.

Kamikochi is widely considered to be one of the country’s most beautiful national parks. The pristine mountain valley is stunning year-round, but this famous place in Japan truly comes alive in October.

From golden larches reflecting in Taisho Pond to red Japanese maple leaves drifting on the breeze, Kamikochi is a wonderland for fall foliage in Japan. And the main trails are accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, so you can enjoy this autumn jewel without fancy hiking gear.

The only tricky thing about Kamikochi is that it’s somewhat remote, and there’s a motor vehicle ban in the park. However, it’s easy to travel here by bus if you do a little research.

Fortunately, I wrote a detailed Kamikochi hiking guide to help you have an amazing, stress-free trip!

Japan’s northernmost main island is a land of rugged natural beauty. Volcanic mountains and dense forests surround the island’s developed cities, providing plenty of opportunities for leaf peeping.

When people ask where to go in Japan in October, Daisetsuzan National Park is often the answer. Daisetsuzan is Japan’s largest national park, and it’s famous for being the first place in the country to get autumn foliage.

This vast crater lake inside Towada-Hachimantai National Park is one of the most popular autumn destinations in Japan. Boat tours ferry guests around the lake, offering amazing views of the red and gold trees that surround the shore. And there are numerous hotels and onsen resorts that make for a relaxing home base.

Nearby Oirase Stream is also renowned for its stunning autumn colors, which peak around late October.

Waterfalls, canyons, golden mountaintop shrines… If Nikko isn’t on your radar, it should be!

Nikko is best known for Toshogu Shrine, the opulent final resting place of shogunate leader Tokugawa Ieyasu. The village sits at the edge of Nikko Nationa Park, which boasts some of Japan’s best places for fall color in October. Highlights include Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and Ryuokyo Canyon.

Nikko is only 2 hours away from Tokyo by bullet train, so it’s a great autumn day trip option. Its beautiful and peaceful location also make it ideal for visitors traveling to Japan alone .

Nara deer in front of lake with shrine and fall foliage.

With sacred deer roaming ancient temple grounds strewn in autumn leaves, it’s no wonder Nara is a fall favorite.

Fall foliage in Nara doesn’t peak until November, but places like Mt. Wakakusa will take on color starting in late October. Even if the weather pushes back koyo , you can still enjoy the town’s amazing attractions, like Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Grand Shrine, without heavy crowds.

If you want to feel as though you’ve walked back in time, Kanazawa should be on your itinerary.

Use my Kanazawa day trip guide to plan your visit!

Unlike other Japanese cities, much of Kanazawa has been preserved since the Edo period. You can explore centuries-old neighborhoods, a ninja temple, and the iconic Kanazawa Castle against a backdrop of fiery hues. Kanazawa is on a direct shinkansen line from Tokyo, making it an easy day trip or secondary destination.

Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms are synonymous with Japanese beauty. But the sacred mountain and surrounding lakes are perfectly accentuated by fall foliage.

Kyoto in October is all about the festivals. Though autumn colors don’t arrive until the last few days of October, the lighter crowds and cultural events make Kyoto a great addition to a fall itinerary.

On October 22nd, the grand Jidai Matsuri festival celebrates the founding of the city. Thousands of performers dressed as geisha, samurai, and other historical figures parade through the streets towards Heian Shrine.

In nearby Arashiyama, dozens of women dressed in colorful Heian period costumes participate in the Saigu Procession (Saigū Gyōretsu). This event recreates the purification and departure ritual of a royal woman leaving to serve as a shrine priestess.

Visiting Tokyo in October is a great idea. While you won’t see much autumn foliage, the lighter crowds and Halloween festivities more than make up for it.

Halloween may be a Western holiday, but in the land of cosplay, it’s a full-blown celebration. All month, shops and restaurants decorate with displays and sell themed food and merchandise. And on the 31st, the streets of Akihabara look like an outdoor Halloween party.

For the ultimate Halloween experience, head to Tokyo Disney. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter comes alive with pumpkins, giant cobwebs, and skeleton wreaths. And experiences like the Haunted Mansion and Spooky Boo! parade transform the park into a magical must-see.

If you’re looking for more traditional October festivals, you’re in luck. There are a number of fireworks festivals, parades, and fall markets in the city and surrounding suburbs. This article has a list of what to see and when.

Nagoya Castle with red tree and partly cloudy sky view.

Anyone interested in Japanese history and culture should visit Nagoya in October. Near the middle of the month, the city puts on its largest event: the Nagoya Festival.

It’s a cultural extravaganza featuring two days of parades, traditional folk music, horseback archery competitions, and plenty of must eat Japanese food . Modern elements, like marching bands and motor vehicles, are also woven into the festivities.

Autumn color doesn’t usually arrive in Nagoya until November. However, attractions like Nagoya Castle and the Sakae entertainment district provide plenty of amusement in addition to the festival.

Kurama Fire Festival

Known as hi-matsuri , Japanese fire festivals are beloved by locals and tourists alike. On the evening of October 22nd, the hot spring village of Kurama hosts an epic, flaming processional up to Yuki Jinja.

Hundreds of villagers clad in traditional garb carry torches through the streets, and add them to the bonfire once they reach the shrine.

Nagasaki Kunchi

From October 7-9, parades and performances take over the city of Nagasaki. This popular festival has everything from sailboat-looking floats to energetic traditional dancing. Foreigners should check out this website for more information on how to watch the events, as seated tickets are difficult to buy outside of Japan.

Your best bet for enjoying this festival is to book a local guide .

Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival

On the evening of October 4th, more than 2,000 red paper lanterns drift through the streets of Nihonmatsu. Locals bob and weave as they carry the seven floats holding lanterns and drummers. It’s one of Japan’s most impressive lantern festivals, especially when the floats travel in front of Nihonmatsu Castle.

Nada Fighting Festival

If you think Japan is all about quiet rituals and pretty lanterns, think again! Every October 14-15, male residents of Hyogo prefecture put on a wild show of strength and destruction.

Day one of the Nada Fighting Festival involves a blessing and parade of decorated floats. But on the second day, groups of men in traditional clothing ram three floats together in an effort to destroy one.

All this action is set to beating drums and chanting onlookers, making it one of Japan’s more lively fall events.

Wooden pavilion over outdoor onsen bath in Japan forest.

From capsule hotels to fancy resorts, accommodation in Japan spans all budgets and travel styles. However, I highly suggest booking a ryokan   for your autumn trip to Japan.

Ryokans are traditional guest houses that offer an authentic Japanese cultural experience. Expect to find woven tatami mats in your room, a wooden soaker tub in the bath, and plush futon mats for sleeping.

When we stayed at Yuzuya Ryokan in Kyoto , we enjoyed perks like afternoon tea in our room and amazing kaiseki dinners overlooking a Japanese garden. It was an unforgettable experience!

Many ryokans also have onsen (hot spring baths), which feel incredible after a long day of leaf-peeping.

6 thoughts on “Visiting Japan in October: The Best of Autumn in Japan”

Ok this is AMAZING. I have to agree with you— I love Japan in the fall. We’ve been to Kyoto in November and it is absolutely magical with all the gorgeous foliage and delicious seasonal cuisine. Will have to visit these other destinations in autumn next time! Hokkaido looks incredible.

I’m glad we agree! Sakura season is lovely, but I think the reds and yellows of fall foliage bring out the best of Japan’s cities and landscapes.

How many days do you think are ideal for an October visit to Japan? Would 10 days be sufficient? If so, which cities and parks would you prioritize? We would likely travel from Oct 17-27. Thank you!

Great question, Vanessa! 10 days is a fantastic amount of time to spend in Japan. The leaf forecast changes every year depending on the weather, but you’ll definitely see some great colors in Hokkaido and mountainous areas like Nagano prefecture. I did my 5 day Nagano itinerary in late October and saw plenty of autumn foliage. Nikko, Sapporo, and Daisetsuzan National Park would be great as well.

Thanks so much for this wonderful article Chelsea! I visited Japan during sakura season and I have been wanting to visit Japan in fall. I have a tentative plan to have a small simple wedding ceremony in Japan next fall. Do you have any recommendations on this? I was thinking a small simple gathering in Hakone or Fuji lakes but open to more ideas. Goal is to have an intimate wedding with the beautiful fall nature background and then everyone can just enjoy being in Japan. Look forward to your thoughts!

That sounds lovely, Rachel! There are a ton of hotels and resorts in the Hakone/Fuji Five Lakes area, and I’d imagine many would be able to host your guests and do a wedding dinner. A ryokan would also be a good option if you only have a very small number of guests.

If you’re hoping for a view of Mount Fuji during the ceremony, I suggest an early morning or late afternoon ceremony, as the clouds and mid-day haze can obstruct the view. Waiting until the first week of November should give you more clear viewing conditions, as well as good fall foliage. Check out 37 Frames Instagram for some lovely Mt. Fuji wedding shots. Congrats and best of luck with the planning!

September Weather in Japan

Japan has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each season’s exact dates vary by location, but September is generally known as the month when summer ends and autumn begins .

☀️ Early September Weather Conditions in Japan

You’ll generally experience summer weather during the beginning of the month. Here are some averages to know:

  • 🌡️ Average temperature – The average temperature ranges from 75 °F to 93 °F in early September, so it’s hotter than many visitors expect.
  • 🌧️ Rainy days – September averages 10 rainy days out of 30, and rain is more common during the first half of the month.
  • ☀️ Daylight hours – September starts with 13 hours of daylight time, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore.

🍀 Lukiih’s Experience: I visited Japan during the first two weeks of September. I went to five different areas, including Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka , Mt. Fuji, and six southern islands near Hiroshima.

During my trip, I primarily experienced hot days where I mostly wore tank tops, shorts, and the occasional light jacket. Of the 14 days I was there, I experienced some rain on six of the days and heavy rain on two of the days.

This 10-day Japan itinerary combines visiting Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo with two epic adventures.

A woman standing on a hill overlooking a pagoda and ocean.

🍁 Late September Weather Conditions in Japan

During the second half of September in Japan, you’ll start experiencing cooler temperatures and hints that fall is around the corner. Here are some averages to know:

  • 🌡️ Average temperature – The average temperature ranges from 69 °F to 87 °F in the second half of September.
  • 🌧️ Rainy days – Late September will continue to see some rainy days, but they should lessen as the month progresses.
  • ☀️ Daylight hours – September ends with 11 hours of daylight time with the sun setting around 5:30 pm.

🌧️ Is September in Japan’s Typhoon Season?

Japan’s rainy season is typically from early June to mid-July, so September is not part of the rainy season. However, September is part of the typhoon season.

Typhoon season runs from July to October, with August and September being the peak season.

Typhoons mostly impact the western areas and southern islands , but they can appear in any part of Japan. During these months, your travels may be impacted by heavy rain and strong winds.

When you’re visiting Japan in September, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for local weather reports . When I traveled, I checked the weather daily, and more frequently when I was going to be outdoors for extended time (e.g., while hiking Mt. Fuji or cycling the Shimanami Kaido ).

Is September a Good Time to Travel to Japan?

Japan is a great place to visit year-round, as every season and month offers something different in terms of activities, special events, and weather.

That said, September is not the most popular time to visit Japan, which means that there are both advantages and disadvantages to visiting during that month.

Having visited Japan in September, I can say that there are great benefits as well as missed opportunities when traveling then.

👍🏻 Upsides of Visiting Japan in September

Visiting Japan in the month of September has a few upsides:

1. Tourist attractions are not as crowded.

To experience a less crowded Japan, September is a great time to visit the country. Tourist attractions that are generally overcrowded and have long lines during peak season are much more manageable in September .

Japan’s peak tourist seasons are when the cherry blossoms bloom in late March to early April and when the autumn foliage appears from late October to early December.

Golden Week , which runs from late April to early May, is also very crowded since Japanese people have a series of national holidays during that time, thus boosting domestic travel.

A woman standing on a bridge with a lush mountain background.

2. The weather is generally pleasantly warm.

You’ll still be wearing summer clothes in September, especially during the first half of the month. By the end of the month, you’ll transition to more pleasant mild weather . September won’t be as hot and humid as it is in the summer months.

Winter is also another time when Japan is less crowded. But during the winter months , some attractions and tourist services may be closed. It’s also very cold with temperatures as low as 25 °F, making it unpleasant to be outside.

See what visiting Japan in December is like .

3. September is known for traditional festivals.

Matsuri are big celebrations in Japan with cultural and religious significance. While the festival season varies by location, many matsuris are typically celebrated in August and September.

4. You can get better deals on accommodation costs.

Japan is one of the most expensive countries to visit in Asia, but with some due diligence, it’s also a popular destination where you can travel on a tighter budget . One way to save during your trip to Japan is by traveling in September.

Curious to know how much I spent in Japan in September? This Japan budget breakdown shares all my trip expenses.

🍀 My Positive Experience With Visiting in September

I enjoyed Japan’s lush environment and warm weather in September. While my home country, the United States, was starting to turn cold in some regions, I was happily in shorts and tank tops in Japan.

Since I was visiting major tourist cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, I still had to account for crowds. However, I experienced significantly fewer crowds compared to what some of my friends had to go through in the spring and summer.

For example, the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto was crowded after 10 am in September, but it was virtually empty before 8:30 am , which was not the case during cherry blossom season.

A woman standing in front of many red-colored Shinto shrines stacked near each other.

If you’re planning to enjoy Japan’s natural onsens ( hot springs ) in early September, I recommend either going to an indoor one or waiting until late September. I went to an outdoor onsen during the first week of September and found the weather a bit too hot to fully appreciate the experience.

👎🏻 Downsides of Visiting Japan in September

Visiting Japan in September also has a few downsides:

1. September is not the time for beautiful fall foliage yet.

One of the best times to see Japan is when the trees turn bright shades of red and orange. But the fall foliage doesn’t happen until October .

In September, you’ll get glimpses of trees changing colors, but most of them will be green until the end of the month.

A pathway surrounded by trees leading to a small temple.

2. The weather can be unpredictable.

Typhoons are most likely to occur in Japan in August and September, so you may have to adjust your travel plans if you experience strong winds, heavy rainfall, or delayed transportation .

3. Silver Week has made September more crowded.

Silver Week is the counterpart of the better-known Golden Week, where Japan has several back-to-back public holidays that boost domestic travel.

Silver Week only occurs in some years and the next one is in 2026 , so the crowds won’t be a problem until then.

🍀 My Negative Experience With Visiting in September

I did miss Japan’s beautiful autumn foliage when I traveled in September. I saw a handful of trees starting to turn orange, but overall, Japan didn’t even remotely look like it was getting ready for the fall .

I also had to change my plans in Kyoto since the city had two heavy rain days when I was there. Luckily, the weather otherwise held up, so I was still able to hike to the top of Mount Fuji and cycle the Shimanami Kaido .

5 Great Things To Do in September in Japan

September is an excellent time to explore all the major cities , like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, because of the smaller crowds.

If you’re looking for activities that are more specific to September, here are five unique and great things to do in Japan during that month:

1. Hike Mount Fuji

🏔️ Why : Mt. Fuji is only open for hiking for two months every year, from early July to early September. The exact opening dates vary by year, but around September 10th is typically your last chance to climb this iconic landmark.

A woman next to a Shinto shrine above the clouds.

📍 Location – Mt. Fuji is about a two-and-a-half-hour train ride west of Tokyo.

🎟️ Admission – Free, but you can donate 1,000 yen towards conserving Mt. Fuji.

🗓️ Timing – The 2024 climbing season dates are yet to be announced.

I hiked to the summit of Mt. Fuji for the breathtaking sunrise view in September 2023 and it was one of my trip’s highlights. Here’s my thorough Mt. Fuji hiking guide .

2. Attend Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri

🏆 Why : Once a year, Japan hosts Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri, or Kishiwada Danjiri Festival, in mid-September. During this unique festival, 35 teams from different neighborhoods compete in a danjiri (wooden cart) race. The competing teams have to carry carts that weigh over 8,000 lbs., making it the must-see “strength and endurance” festival in Japan.

📍 Location : The festival takes place in Kishiwada City , which is an hour south of Osaka by train.

🎟️ Admission : Free

🗓️ Timing : The 2024 festival date is yet to be announced.

3. Watch Sumo Wrestling

💪 Why : Sumo wrestling has been a culturally significant sport in Japan for thousands of years. The September Grand Sumo Tournament is one of the most important and high-level competitions in September annually.

📍 Location : The 2024 tournament takes place in Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena in Tokyo.

🎟️ Admission : Prices vary from approximately $25 to over $200 USD. Tickets go on sale starting August 10, 2024.

🗓️ Timing : September 8–22, 2024

4. Visit Daisetsuzan National Park

🍁 Why : While September is typically not known for fall foliage, there is one location where you can start seeing the leaves turn bright shades of red and orange: Hokkaido in northern Japan. The Daisetsuzan National Park in that area is particularly beautiful during this time.

📍 Location : Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido

🗓️ Timing : September or later

5. Cycle the Shimanami Kaido

🚲 Why : The Shimanami Kaido is a beautiful, off-the-beaten-path biking adventure that can be enjoyed by both casual riders and professional cyclists. During this biking trip, you can enjoy a quieter side of Japan while gazing out at the ocean.

You can cycle the Shimanami Kaido year-round, but the best times are during the spring and autumn months, including September. I did it in early September and kept thinking to myself: “This is excellent biking weather.”

A woman posing in front of a modern bridge and blue sky.

📍 Location : The Shimanami Kaido starts in Onomichi City, which is a two-hour train ride west of Kyoto.

🎟️ Admission : Free, but you will have to rent bikes

🗓️ Timing : Year-round, but particularly good in the spring and fall

September in Japan’s Majors Cities: Tips and My Experience

If you’re concerned about the September weather in Japan and how the heat or typhoon may impact your travel plans, I share my first-hand experience of visiting in September 2023 below.

In most cases, the weather didn’t drastically change my itinerary , but it did influence it.

🗓️ September in Tokyo

Of the six days I spent in Tokyo, it only rained one night , which forced me to mostly be indoors that night. I otherwise experienced sunny days when I was constantly in shorts or a romper.

Due to the summer heat extending into September, it’s a good idea to plan a mix of indoor and outdoor activities while in Tokyo. I enjoyed:

  • Walking around the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
  • Shopping in the Ginza district
  • Trying the food stalls of Asakusa
  • Exploring Akihabara at night

A lush garden with a small pond and Chinese-style building.

September Events in Tokyo

Tokyo also hosts some interesting events in September:

  • Tokyo Game Show – an annual video games trade show hosted by CESA.
  • Kitazawa Hachiman Festival – a busy festival where you’ll see many portable shrines being carried around.
  • Fukuro Matsuri – another annual festival with a big parade.
  • Sumo wrestling tournament – Tokyo hosts one of the most prestigious sumo wrestling tournaments in September.
  • ULTRA JAPAN – one of the biggest EDM shows in the country every year.

🗓️ September in Kyoto

I was in Kyoto for two days, and it rained both days in the afternoon. This compelled me to wake up early on both days, so I could visit many of the outdoor temples before the rain came around 2 pm.

Visiting Kyoto in September was great because there were fewer crowds . Popular spots like the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Fushimi Inari Shrine had significantly fewer people in the early mornings before 9 am.

A forest surrounded by bamboo.

September Events in Kyoto

Kyoto also hosts some interesting events in September:

  • Choyo no Sechie – a chrysanthemum-themed festival.
  • Seiryu-e Festival – another festival where you’ll get to see a dragon parade.

🗓️ September in Osaka

My day trip to Osaka was blessed with clear skies , so the weather didn’t impact any of my plans.

I visited many of the top attractions, including eating at the Kuromon Ichiba Market  and walking through Dotonburi . I also got to cool down a bit at the Osaka Aquarium , which is a well-designed, unique aquarium.

What to Pack for Japan in September

Remember that you will experience mostly sunny days in September in Japan, but you’ll also likely experience moments of rain. When packing for Japan in September, bring a mix of summer clothes and rain gear.

Here are some other things to remember to pack for a trip to Japan in September:

  • Reusable water bottle –The summer heat means that you will need to hydrate. Japan has a lot of vending machines and convenience stores where I could buy refrigerated water to keep cool in my insulated water bottle .

Water fountains are unfortunately not common in Japan, except at parks. However, the tap water is safe to drink.

  • Rain jacket – If you don’t bring a rain jacket, be prepared to carry an umbrella around or start running when it pours. I brought my rain jacket which was especially useful during my trip to Kyoto.
  • Comfortable walking shoes – Don’t be afraid to pack waterproof hiking shoes that double as rainboots, especially if you’re going to do a lot of outdoor activities. You’ll see many tourists walking around in hiking shoes.
  • Breathable long clothes – Japanese people tend to wear more conservative outfits that cover a lot of skin. If you want to blend in more, bring breathable clothes to stay cool.

I’ve also written on what to pack for outdoor activities in their respective guides: see the Mt. Fuji packing list and the Shimanami Kaido packing list .

Mt Fuji is not free anymore due to overtourism.

The new 2024 Mt. Fuji climbing fee will only be for the popular Yoshida trail (not the other trails, including the one I climbed). I’ll update with that information; thanks for the callout, Kat.

10 Things to Do in Japan in September

For memories of a lifetime on your early Autumn visit

Lynda Hogan

September in Japan

September in Japan is still quite hot, but the humidity starts to abate. By the third week in September the days feel more bearable and the cooler nights are most welcome. Just as the Autumnal equinox approaches, we are able to enjoy the great outdoors more comfortably. The Autumnal Equinox is a public holiday in Japan; one of two holidays that fall around the third week of September which is known as Silver Week in Japan. You will be able to enjoy special events held during Silver Week , but here are another ten ideas to make the most out of an early Autumn visit to Japan;

1. Stock up on the Halloween supplies

Even if you are not going to be in Japan for Halloween , September is your chance to stock up on Japanese Halloween decorations and Halloween edition snacks. They make great souvenirs too. Hold onto them to throw a Japanese Halloween back in your home country! From the 1st of September, it's like a switch gets flipped somewhere and all the shops go into Halloween mode. Furthermore, you can enjoy Halloween decorations in shopping centers and at large tourist attractions. Some even have early Halloween events too.

2. Attend some seasonal events

One of things I love about September in Japan are the events . For me, August is too hot to comfortably enjoy the summer fireworks and festivals. But thankfully some "summer" festivals are actually celebrated in September, when at the very least, the night time temperatures are cooler. Furthermore, there are plenty of traditional festivals around the country in the month of September. Moreover, many of the autumn, even Winter, events begin. For example, the Halloween special events at Disney and Universal Studios Japan begin. You will even find some places start their night illumination at the end of September.

3. Enjoy some water play before the season closes

It surprises a lot of people to hear that in Japan there is a season for visiting the seaside. Out of season people rarely swim or hang out at the beach. Several of the beaches "close" at the end of August, but you can always find ones that are "open" until mid September. The weather is definitely still conducive to swimming. Likewise, the pools, aqua parks and splash pads follow the same pattern. All are closed, however, if there is a typhoon approaching. And that is one thing to be careful of in September - it is typhoon season still.

4. Fish your own barbecue!

While many of the water areas close up from mid September, fishing remains an option throughout the year. Although, some of the fishing parks close in Winter and some actually close in summer. By and large though, September is a good month to fish in Japan. Moreover, there are many restaurants where you can fish your own lunch or dinner. But in September, it's still warm enough to enjoy a barbecue outdoors. If you are not confident in doing it independently, you can find fishing parks that offer the service. Once you catch your fish they will gut it and either grill it for you or set you up to barbecue it yourself.

5. Pick some fruit and / or vegetables

Another hands on experience not to miss in September is fruit and vegetable picking or digging. In September, grapes and pears are ripe for the picking and it is a great month to dig for sweet potatoes. Vineyards for grape picking are a dime a dozen in Japan. Pear picking locations can be a little trickier to find, but they do exist. And there are sweet potato farms in most of Japan's prefectures that afford you the chance to dig.

6. Admire the scarecrows or make some of your own

September is scarecrow season in Japan. Many prefectures have several places where you can actually see dozens of scarecrows together as neighborhoods often have a scarecrow competition. I love seeing the creativeness of local farmers each year in September. If you are particularly into scarecrows and won't be visiting Japan in September, you'll be pleased to know that there are actually some villages and towns in Japan that have scarecrows all year round.

7. Explore the Japanese countryside

With the cooler temperatures and the decrease in bugs, September is a great month to get into nature. It is the perfect month to get out of the big cities and explore the countryside. If you are not that much into hiking there are always alternatives. For example, you can get a ropeway or cable car to the top of several mountains. In recent years, it has become increasingly easier to rent a bike to to see more of rural areas.

8. Snap some Autumnal colors

If for nothing else, get out of the big cities to see the stunning flowers that bloom around Japan in September. Here are some of the flowers, you can see large displays of, in September in Japan:

  • Spider lilies
  • Autumn Sunflowers
  • Cock's comb (Celosia)
  • Buckwheat flower

August is way too hot for the average person to camp, even by a river on top of a mountain. But by the second half of September, conditions become more suited to camping again. It might still be quite hot by the day, so at this time of year riverside camping or campsites at a high altitude are recommended. Due to the popularity of camping in September it is advised to book a campsite well in advance. There are plenty of campsites in Japan that offer full rental services - from the tent to cooking utensils and everything you would need for a one or two night camping experience. There are also some really great glamping sites dotted around Japan.

10. Taste some Autumn treats

Back at home, we have seasonal fruits and vegetables, but apart from a special Christmas or Easter dinner and a few Halloween dishes, we don't really have seasonal dishes. Here in Japan there are so many seasonal foods and September is no exception. For example are the seasonal dishes to celebrate " Tsukimi " . The date of Tsukimi changes each year, but if often falls in September. This year, 2021, it will be from September 21st to 24th. People eat special dishes during the period to mark the occasion. Those foods include Tsukimi Dango, chestnuts and mochi in the shape of rabbits as in Japan it is a rabbit, not a man, on the moon!

Getting there

Each of the ideas on the list have multiple locations all over Japan. Please use the links in this post to navigate to the topics or use the search function to find a location near to the areas you plan to visit.

September can see some rainfall and the air is humid in the early part of the month, but this presents the perfect opportunity to indulge in wonderful indoor activities. Learn the art of making sushi during a cooking class or take your family to the Pokemon Centre. Consider exploring the Hokkaido region, which experiences less rainfall.

Yakushima Island, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site off the southern coast of Kyushu, is an ideal destination if you are seeking to escape the crowds during your visit to Japan in September.

This lush, tropical island is renowned for its ancient cedar forests, pristine hiking trails, and unspoiled natural beauty. Families can embark on scenic hikes through the island’s lush landscapes, encounter diverse flora and fauna, and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature without the distraction of large tourist crowds for a truly serene and memorable experience.

Witness Tokyo’s Sumo Tournament

The Aki Basho, or Autumn Sumo Tournament, is one of the six grand sumo tournaments held annually in Japan. You can witness the wrestlers’ elaborate ceremonial rituals, feel the electrifying atmosphere within the hallowed sumo halls, and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage surrounding this ancient martial art.

Things to Do in Japan in September

September means the end of summer and the back to school period for the second semester of the Japanese school year. Japanese people enjoy the last warm days during annual school festivals or sport meetings. The tourist season becomes quieter while fall slowly settles in at the end of the month.

Tourism statistics

After the tourism peak of summer, September seems like an off-season. Western families are focused on back to school needs, but late travelers remain in Japan.

The decrease in tourist numbers can also be explained by the weather, which can be variable. Indeed, medium and high-altitude mountains hikers do not favor this period.

Climate and weather

Summer lingers at the beginning of the month with temperatures around 25 °C or more. The humidity rate remains high with the typhoon   🌀 season lasting until mid-September, which is why sunny days can be rare in this season. However, after a typhoon, the days are clear and offer nice sunlight.

japan travel september october

Progressively, the change to fall arrives with a colder but quieter climate. The first autumn   🍁 foliage can be observed at the end of the month on Hokkaido Island in the north.

National public holidays

As a general rule, one unique public holiday is not worked in September:

  • Third Monday in September -- 敬老の日 Keirô no Hi , Respect for the Aged Day

Recently, the "Silver Week" notion appeared and resulted in declaring a short " Golden Week " of 2–3 days, combining (when the year’s calendar allows it) this only public holiday and the fall equinox that occurs on September 22 or 23.

japan travel september october

Top things to do

Large cities still offer numerous events each weekend day, whether they are traditional or based on sports . There is also a resurgence of annual conventions, especially in Tokyo . As for nature, it is still possible to enjoy beautiful days in the mountains or parks when the weather is dry.

Below is a list of Japanese seasonal attractions and events in September:

Travel packing tips

A vast range of summer and mid-season clothes are essential to plan for all kinds of weather in September. It can be wise to pack waterproof shoes, along with a lighter pair of shoes.

Mosquitoes are still present, and a lot of repelling products are available in Japan. Sensitive people can bring their own products in their suitcase or use green clay, which is an anti-inflammatory.

In case of typhoon, travelers are advised to stay inside: reading a good book or manga, playing video games or watching movies are good ideas.

Kyoto is undoubtedly one of the best areas for viewing the spectacular fall landscape. Places like Kiyomizudera Temple and Tenryuji in Arashiyama are very famous for their beautiful fall leaves, which create a breathtaking background to the traditional temples and shrines.

japan travel september october

The northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido is home to breathtaking scenery all year round but it becomes all the more beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color. Visit between late September or October to see the best of the koyo (fall colors).

Since Hokkaido is quite large, you might want to rent a car to move around more easily, though many of the places are accessible via public transportation.

Well-known areas to see fall leaves include the Onuma Quasi-National Park north of Hakodate and Mt. Moiwa in Sapporo .

japan travel september october

The metropolis of Tokyo also boasts many great places to view the beautiful fall colors. Certain areas will be crowded but transportation within the city should not be an issue.

We suggest holding a picnic or reading a book under the gold and crimson-shaded trees at Yoyogi Park or Shinjuku Gyoen . Another must-see is the foliage at Rikiguen (pictured above), or Higo-Hosokawa Garden, some of Tokyo's renowned Japanese gardens.

japan travel september october

Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo, is well-known for onsen (hot springs). In autumn, the landscape will be sprinkled with shades of red and gold.

Located around an hour and a half away from Shinjuku in Tokyo, Hakone is ideal for a day trip or a weekend getaway. At Lake Ashi you can get a glimpse of Mt. Fuji with the autumn leaves on a clear day. You can also travel to Sengoku Plateau and surround yourself with an endless field of golden pampas grass.

Tips for visiting Japan in September

Japan weather & when to go: September

Japan september weather overview.

If you can wait till October to travel that would be best as intense heat and typhoons are across Japan in September and as such the options are limited. September being the hottest and wettest months of the year in some parts meaning that the south-west areas of Hiroshima and Osaka are without question the best of the limited bunch.

Japan weather & when to go

Pick a month below, september’s weather in detail, sapporo, niseko, furano.

Japan’s northernmost island is the first place in the country to experience the famous Autumn colours as, from mid-September, the leaves on the deciduous trees turn red, gold and orange. Although not as frantically popular as cherry blossom time, ‘koyo’ is equally picturesque and Hokkaido’s National Parks, brimming with flora, are the perfect place to witness this scenic attraction, especially Daisetsuzan National Park.

Whilst temperatures in Sapporo drop in September, daily average temperatures are still fairly high in the first half of the month (avg temp: 20°C), although evenings are noticeably cooler, so it’s worth packing a light jumper. There is a higher chance of rain in September, although Hokkaido escapes the typhoon generated rainfall that the rest of the country is experiencing this month.

Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima

Whilst temperatures in Tokyo, Kyoto and across most of Honshu remain high in September (avg temp: 23-25°C), days can be punctuated with intense periods of rainfall driven by the typhoons that hit the southern islands during the month. Infact, September is the wettest month of the year in Tokyo. Head south-west to Hiroshima and Osaka for sunnier days with less rain.

Shikoku & Kyushu

Matsuyama, fukuoka, nagasaki.

Summer temperatures continue throughout the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu in September (avg temp: 24°C), although there is still a realistic threat of typhoons during the month.

Okinawa Islands

Naha, okinawa, kerama.

Peak typhoon season continues in September meaning days can be wet, with strong winds throughout Okinawa and Kerama. Infact, this month is the wettest of the year for Japan’s southernmost islands. Having said that, temperatures are still pushing 30°C, which means Okinawa is the warmest place in Japan in September.

Okinawa and Southern Japan: Typhoon Season Peaks

Okinawa remains hot, peaking at 31°C (87°F) on average. On sunny days, you could still enjoy water activities, such as swimming, diving, and snorkeling, with the added bonus of fewer crowds.

September is the peak season for typhoons. You can expect heavy rainfall, but on the bright side, typhoons only last 2 or 3 days and are often followed by good weather.

1. Hokkaido: Autumn Colors and Drier Experiences

In September, Hokkaido is cool and pleasant, averaging 22°C (72°F). Hokkaido experiences its wettest month with rainfall of 135 mm (5 in). But it is still drier than other cities in Japan.

If possible, visit Hokkaido in the second half of September. Autumn leaves appear from late September. The cooler weather is more comfortable to have a soak in its hot springs.

You could head to Toyako (southwest Hokkaido) for romantic lake-view-hot-spring experiences. The daily firework displays nearby are not to be missed between April and October.

2. Tokyo: The Epitome of Japan

Tokyo is the standout city of Japan as well as a popular starting point for a family trip or couple's vacation.

September is the wettest month in Tokyo with short intense bursts of rain. But your Tokyo trip won't lose its charm even then, as Tokyo is famous for indoor activities. You could try a special sushi-cooking class, visit digital art museums, and experience animated culture in theme parks (like Ghibli Park) and themed cafes/shops (Pokemon Center).

Tokyo's seasonal events are bonuses as well. Don't miss the annual Grand Sumo Tournament from mid-September. If you like games, the Tokyo Game Show, which is packed with the latest games and high-tech, could be your holiday highlight.

3. Osaka: Exotic Festival & Less-Crowded Super Nintendo World

Osaka is still affected by summer heat in September, with daily temperatures averaging 22–29°C (72–84°F).

If you're a theme park fan, you could enjoy a less-crowded Universal Studios and Super Nintendo World in September. You'll have chances to experience Halloween events inside the Studios from early September.

Looking for an exotic experience in September? Look no further than the Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri. You'd watch thrilling team competitions involving maneuvering large wooden portable shrines called danjiri through winding streets.

4. Mt. Fuji: A Breath-Taking Marvel

Considering the weather, climbing Mt. Fuji is only available from July to September. Seize the last chance of the year to climb the iconic Japan mountain.

The mild weather makes it easier to climb without the challenges of the summer heat. Away from summer crowds, it's the perfect time to avoid the long queues.

For a more relaxing way to experience Mt. Fuji, you could see it from a sightseeing cruise, a cable car, or even a serene ryokan (a traditional inn with a hot spring bath).

Check out more activities around Mt. Fuji in our 9-Day Japan Highlights Tour (Tokyo-Hokane-Kyoto) >>>

5. Nagoya: Futuristic Robotics and Formula 1

Being a popular stop between Tokyo and Kyoto, Nagoya is mild and humid in September.

Nagoya is home to samurai and ninja culture, but Nagoya Castle tops the must-see list for a Nagoya trip.

It is also a hub for futuristic inventions and robotics , so your trip would not be complete without SCMAGLEV and Railway Park as well as Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology.

If you seek stimulating moments, check out the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix (April 5th–7th, 2024) . See and hear the ultimate super cars travelling at speeds exceeding 300 kph (180 mph)!

Typhoons usually hit southern Japan more heavily than central and northern Japan. If you mainly visit the central cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka) or Hokkaido, your trip should be less affected.

A typhoon usually lasts one or two days, unless exceptionally strong and damaging. But you're likely to have clear skies and crisp air before/after it.

During a typhoon, flights or trains might be delayed. So, leaving some flexibility is advisable for potential itinerary changes .

Costs and Crowding in September

After summer holidays end in August, September tends to be a quieter month, when you can expect smaller crowds at attractions, especially at the world-famous ones.

Similarly, you would also get better prices for flights and hotels. Thus, travelling in September would be more affordable.

The weather turns from hot to warm/mild in September, so you could take your summer clothes for daytime activities if you're moving around, but carry something warmer to wear (e.g. a fleece jacket or hoodie) for evenings or if you find yourself getting cool. Warm layers are suggested if you plan to visit cooler North Japan.

As the second rainy season peaks in September in Japan, you're suggested to take rain gear and sandals.

A Guide to Japan - September and October

japan travel september october

Most of September is still summer, but it also marks the beginning of autumn. October is one of the most popular months to visit Japan. Autumn brings the delicious foods associated with the season and reminds everyone why fall is known as the foodie season of Japan. During these two months, people are preparing for the briskness that fall will bring, and bidding farewell to what usually is a hot summer. School is usually back in session full-swing by September, which means that it'll be a little less crowded, although October tends to see a bit more crowds, especially nonlocals, due to the popularity of seasonal events and activities including foliage.

As we often like to reiterate, there is never really a bad time to go to Japan. It sounds too good to be true, but there truly isn't a bad time! It all depends on what you look for in travel, what weather patterns you prefer, and the experiences, events, and festivals that you wish to experience. Although there may be different factors that change including the weather and environmental conditions, the constant of Japan's beauty and historical landmarks is unchanging.

japan travel september october

The temperatures in Japan start to cool down with the change in season. For many people, this becomes a blessing from the cloying humidity that summer can bring. The change of weather and season also signifies an end in the fun, summer festivities and a time to start moving towards a more serious focus with school and work.

japan travel september october

September brings an average high that is in the 80s (Fahrenheit) and the average lows being in the 70s in Tokyo. September is sometimes referred to as the second rainy season due to a relatively high amount of rainfall due to the typhoon season continuing from August. However, the rain actually provides welcome relief from the heat and humidity of summer  and brings clear skies and crisp air after. The rain also isn't every day and often doesn't last all day, so those worried about not being able to go outside need not worry. Further north, like in Sapporo, there is less rainfall than the rest of Japan, but it is actually still considered the rainiest month in Sapporo. The Osaka/Hiroshima area tends to be sunnier than the Tokyo area. Japan as a whole tends to have periods of rain and there isn't a definite escape from it, but there also are sunny and/or rain-free days and plenty to do that makes going worthwhile. Just prepare by packing appropriately and prepare for a mix of weather patterns. If you head up north towards Hokkaido in late September, you may catch the beginning of autumn foliage and the turning of the leaf colors.

japan travel september october

October  is probably one of the most recommended and popular times to visit Japan. There is a noticeable drop in temperature, with an average temperature in the 60s (°F). October has mild weather patterns in comparison to the recent months and brings drier and crisper air. There are still certain regions that may see some sporadic heavy rainfall including Tokyo but not to the extent of June or September usually. Everything is much milder than it was for recent months past, including the heat, humidity, and rain. If you go up north towards Hokkaido, fall foliage is usually in full-swing and drier than the rest of Japan. Okinawa sometimes sees strong winds and rain but warm weather as well. Towards mid to late October, there is more fall foliage through a greater area of Japan including Tokyo, so if you want to get a glimpse of the acclaimed fall foliage view of Japan, late October is the best time to go!

japan travel september october

*Weather is ever-changing and not guaranteed. Information is based on past weather patterns. H.I.S. holds no liability should you choose to book your trip during these months.

September is a calmer month to visit and is great for first-timers to Japan who would want to see the classic sights of Japan and explore cities without the craze of people on vacation and holiday crowds. October is not without its fair share of events, so if you're in the country, you can explore the fall foliage as well as the month's festivities. Fall is also known as the foodie season, so look out for more seasonal ingredients and local and unlisted food festivals here and there!

In addition to the traditional and annual festivals listed amongst this list, there are also many sporting events happening this year including many rugby matches and the Formula 1 Grand Prix. It's a great year to be in Japan for sporting events! Many areas in Japan may also have smaller, local events happening so make sure to check the local tourism website for some information. Tokyo often holds many antique sales and flea markets, and you're sure to find some festivals celebrating other cultures around various areas of Japan too!

Of course, many of you were probably expecting to see some Halloween related events up here too. And of course, I wasn't going to leave it out! While Halloween is more of a modern thing and not a traditional Japanese festival like many of the other things on this list, it has become more and more of a popular event within the last decade. In Tokyo, there are full-on Halloween "parades" (more so crowds of costumed people walking around) with many people dressing in funny or cute, and occasionally scary costumes. Many places in Tokyo take part in the Halloween fun, though many people head over to popular theme parks such as Disneyland. Usually, the celebrations aren't just on the 31st, and many of the festivities occur on the weekend; it just depends on what day the 31st happens to fall. If you're a Halloween fiend, it is definitely recommended to lookup local events going on in the area you're going to be in!

*Disclaimer: Dates are for 2019 events and are subject to change without notice. Events may be canceled or postponed based on weather conditions and other factors. HIS is not responsible for any changes in the dates or itineraries of these events or the consequences therefore after. We recommend always double-checking for the latest information online.

If you’ve got a trip to Japan planned in the fall, it’s important to know what to expect weather-wise so that you pack the right things.

Packing for an autumnal trip to Japan isn’t hard.

In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know so that you pack appropriately.

Table of Contents

What is fall like in Japan?

From September through November, Japan is in the fall.

The whole country is awash with reds, yellows and oranges and it’s such a beautiful time of year to visit.

Japan weather in Autumn

After the hot summer months of June, July and August, Japanese people often welcome the cooler days that fall brings.

Here is what to expect:

  • Temperature-wise, September mornings and evenings are around 64 °F (23 °C) while the afternoon temperatures hit a pleasant 73 °F (23 °C).
  • In October, your morning and evening temperatures sit around 57 °F (14 °C) and the afternoon gets to around 66 °F (19 °C).
  • Finally, in November, the morning and evening temperatures are noticeably cooler at 45 °F (7 °C). In the afternoon, you’ll see the mercury at around 57 °F (14 °C).

As you can see, the temperatures vary considerably in the fall and so you’ll be best taking lots of layers with you – as well as a raincoat.

Let’s look at each month.

September in Japan

After the hot summer months, September’s temperatures are much more bearable while still being pleasant.

Tips wear September Japan trip

However, September is also the time when typhoons hit. The month of September is the second-most rainy in the year.

As such, always take an umbrella and raincoat for September Japan trips!

When It’s Not Raining – You’ll likely be fine to wear short sleeves during the daytime. You’ll need a light jacket for the evenings, however.

Packing List for Women

Depending on how long you’re staying, women should take a thin long-sleeved shirt, a short-sleeved shirt, a cardigan, a thin dress, and a long skirt.

In terms of accessories, both an umbrella and sunscreen are a must. A nice pair of flats and some sneakers are a good idea too.

Packing List for Men

Men packing for September would be best taking a short-sleeve t-shirt, a regular shirt, a light coat, and a pair of jeans.

You’ll also need an umbrella and sunscreen as well as a pair of sneakers and a nice pair of shoes.

October in Japan – what to wear in Japan in October

October is a stunning time of year in Japan.

The temperature is comfortable and there’s not so much rain.

wear October Japan trips advice

This means this month is a great time to go exploring the Japanese great outdoors.

Take plenty of comfortable outdoor and active clothes for all of your adventures.

If you’re wondering what to wear in Japan in October, you’ll need:

  • a pair of jeans
  • a thick dress
  • a denim jacket
  • and a windbreaker

As for shoes, sneakers are a must for all of the possible outdoor explorations you can do.

You’ll also need to take a nice pair of shoes for other activities and evenings.

Men will need similar attire to women in October in Japan.

A light jacket and a windbreaker will help keep the chill off, but you might be able to get away with a thin sweater on nice days.

Be sure to take sneakers and smart shoes too.

November In Japan

November certainly feels a lot more wintery than the earlier autumn months.

wear in November Japan trip tips

Temperatures drop quite a bit, and you’ll need a thick jacket or coat.

Even on the warmest of November days, it can get chilly quite suddenly so you should be prepared.

November means getting out your woollies!

You’ll need a thick sweater or cardigan, jeans, a coat, or a down jacket.

Footwear-wise – Boots as well as sneakers are advised. Don’t forget a hat and gloves too for the chillier days and nights.

Men will need nice warm boots, a knitted shirt, jeans, a thick coat or jacket and gloves and a hat.

How much should you pack for a trip to Japan fall/autumn?

This depends entirely on the length of your trip.

Most people go for at least a week to two weeks.

Packing clothes for a trip to Japan autumn

Here are some tips on what to pack for a two-week trip to Japan:

  • A pair of warm boots – these are essential if you’re going in November but optional in September and October.
  • 1-2 pairs of flat shoes – one could be a smarter, evening pair and the other could be a pair of sneakers.
  • 4-5 pairs of socks.
  • 6-10 pairs of underwear (depending on if you intend to wash while you’re there!).
  • A pair of gloves.
  • A beanie or woolly hat.
  • 2x cardigans.
  • 1 x coat or jacket – if you’re going closer to summer, a jacket will do. If you’re going in November, you’ll need a coat.
  • 4-7 tops – take a mixture of things for day wear and evening wear. Japanese women are more conservative, so you’ll look a little out of place showing too much belly flesh!
  • 2-3 dresses (for women).
  • 3-5 bottoms – if you’re going in September, a pair of shorts might be ok, otherwise long pants and dresses with stockings are more appropriate.
  • Leggings – if you’re planning on hiking or walking.

Other things you should know about visiting Japan in the autumn/fall

Japanese people tend to take their own holidays in late September.

Don’t be surprised if tourist places and parks etc. seem really busy at this time of year.

Fall is a spectacular time for visiting some of Japan’s sites. The Rikugien Garden in Tokyo comes alive with striking fall colors.

It runs from the city hall all the way to the harbor and attracts around 20,000 runners.
