Position Summary

The Senior Naval Architect participates to daily ship project naval architectural routines for specified Vessel Classes during their design and building phases. Participation to concept design process for upcoming new build projects belongs also to his/her focus areas. The Senior Naval Architect works closely with the teams of Maritime Technology and Chief Naval Architect assisting experts with technology development and research in addition to various new build related technical projects such as technical feasibility studies and verification of new technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Naval Architecture – Design and Building phases

• Acts as an influencer of naval architecture in the ideation phase for Newbuild concepts
• Participates in development of new projects and liaises with the yard and external design and technical design specialists to gather insights on proposed innovative concepts
• Explores multiple aspirational ship platforms and/or design ideas through feasibility phase, considering main boundary conditions such as technical feasibility, buildability, operability, and affordability
• In-house advisor for Newbuild department on statutory regulations and their direct impact on architectural design. This includes fire safety related topics like space categories, structural fire protection and escapes, assembly stations arrangement, general technical issues, etc.
• Manage assessment and development of ship performance impact on architectural design development including weights and stability, hydrodynamics and speed requirements, ship structure in addition to passenger comfort aspects such as wind comfort, noise prevention, vibration and acoustics, and operational efficiency including passenger flow and lift arrangement.
• Builds and maintains collaboration with team, NB Business & Strategy, Maritime Technology, shipyards, naval architects, architects, brand leaders, and other key thinkers.
• Collaborates with our external partners, consultancies, classification societies, flag states and other industry bodies.
• Actively coordinates the different disciplines, by leading the project general arrangement plan development
• Participates to ships Naval Architectural and regulatory work with classification society, Flag administration, USCG, etc
• Brings basic knowledge by self and maintains relationships with knowledge experts in Classification Societies, Flag State and USCG in ideation phase for feasibility feedback
• Applies knowledge of relevant rules and regulations to the design process
• Assesses and advises specifications, measurements and calculations relevant to ship design.
• Studies, compares, assesses and shares statistical information and analyses across various ships and areas bringing forth observations
• Prepares presentations, supporting documents, e.g. simplified drawings, to improve the understanding by others
• Develops and prepares reports and records related to assignments or projects
• Stays current on relevant maritime industry and technical research and projects; seeks information and evaluates new technology with knowledge experts
• Considering the position and role, the employee is required to perform reasonable and temporally any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management

Technology development

• Participates in design criteria selection and developments for new projects
• Participates to risks management process for new technologies qualification and applies internal process how to identify risks properly at early stage of project
• Feasibility studies for different field of technologies as needed.

Key skills & experience required

• Proficiency in Excel, MS Word, MS Project or equivalent, PowerPoint,
• Working knowledge of various computer aided design programs and analysis programs. Good skills to analyze and develop specifications. Drawings, layouts and other technical documentation.
• Understanding of shipbuilding project and programming processes.
• Operational knowledge of SOLAS, IMO, classification rules and marine standards.
• Fluency in English, other languages as advantage.
• Excellent teamwork skills.
• Good skills for communication and co-operation in multicultural working environment.
• Willingness to travel.

Qualifications

M. Sc. Naval Architect or equal with minimum 8 years of experience in the field of naval architecture in cruise shipbuilding industry.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those requirements employees must meet to perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing job functions the employee is regularly required to sit, and stand, write, review and type reports, compile data, operate a pc, communicate, listen, and assess information. The employee may move about the office complex, may travel to other office locations and may lift, push, pull or move 10-15 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to walk to the dock, ascend and descend the vessel within a construction site environment. This position may regularly travel domestically or internationally. Visual requirements include distant, close and color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. The environment includes work inside/outside the office, travel to other offices, as well as domestic, international, and shipboard travel. A high noise level is possible if visiting shipboard or offsite locations.

California's new 'Honest Pricing Law' will require cruise lines to be transparent about fees

A new California law will force cruise lines to be more transparent about their prices, bolstering a Biden administration crusade against junk fees .

Senate Bill 478, also known as the "Honest Pricing Law," will go into effect on July 1. The law makes it illegal for businesses to advertise prices for goods or services that don't include all the required fees or charges.

A press release from California's attorney general said the price transparency law "protects consumers from deceptive price advertising and allows them to make an informed decision by seeing the all-in price of goods or services up-front before they get the bill."

The new law will impact the travel industry, including cruise lines that operate in California. Companies like Royal Caribbean International and Norweigan Cruise Line will need to make the price of taxes, port fees, and other charges clear to customers up front, according to The Washington Post .

A Carnival Corp. representative told the outlet it would follow guidelines set out by the "Honest Pricing Law." Carnival Corp. is the parent company of brands like Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America.

"While this is a California state law, we are making this change nationwide to ensure our advertised pricing is consistent no matter where guests shop for our cruise," the statement said.

The representative said that from now on, the full advertised cost would include extra charges previously "itemized separately for consumer awareness."

Norweigan Cruise Lines is still determining their next steps, according to the outlet.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean told Travel + Leisure that guests can expect to see extra fees included in the overall price.

"Guests booking with Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises will now see pricing that is inclusive of their selected cruise fare and all required taxes and fees," the statement read. "We are also supporting our travel partners across the country ahead of this upcoming change."

Representatives for Carnival Corp., Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

The California attorney general's press release said the "Honest Pricing Law" comes as the Biden administration continues to address hidden fees, also known as "junk fees." The Biden administration first announced its fight against hidden fees in October 2022.

In October 2023, the Biden administration announced it would require banks and credit unions to provide customers with basic information without charging fees.

The Federal Trade Commission also proposed a rule in October 2023 that would ban hidden fees and require all businesses to show the full price of a good or service up front.

Royal caribbean set to resume cruises out of baltimore nearly 2 months after key bridge collapse.

Royal Caribbean International plans to resume cruises out of Baltimore, Maryland, later this month, now that the channel in and out of the busy port was reopened on Tuesday to a depth of up to 45 feet.

The news comes nearly two months after the container ship Dali crashed into a support of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, sending the structure smashing into the Patapsco River below, and on top of the vessel.

On Monday, crews used explosives to break apart the largest remaining piece of the bridge resting on top of the Dali, causing the mangled metal to fall into the water. Crews were expected to assess the remaining bridge debris near the grounded ship before re-floating the vessel and moving it out of the channel.

Enough of the structure has been removed to resume shipments in and out of Port Baltimore, and on Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard reopened the Fort McHenry limited access channel to an available depth of 45 feet for commercial vessels daily, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The Port of Baltimore shared the news on Facebook, saying the channel has a horizontal clearance of 350 feet and a vertical clearance of 214 feet because of power lines above, though the depth and width may increase as salvage operations continue in the area.

Still, transit in the channel remains at the discretion of the Coast Guard, based on weather conditions and salvage operations.

The reopening means cruise ships like Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas are resuming operations.

ECONOMIC IMPACT FROM BALTIMORE BRIDGE COLLAPSE WILL BE LONG-LASTING, TRADE GROUP WARNS

On May 25, the Vision of the Seas will depart Baltimore for a five-night voyage to Bermuda.

"Royal Caribbean International looks forward to returning to the Port of Baltimore once again," a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean told Fox News Digital. "Vision of the Seas will set sail on a five-night itinerary as planned on Saturday, May 25, after completing its previously scheduled drydock in The Bahamas."

In a social media post, the Port of Baltimore expressed excitement over the return of cruise ships in and out of the city.

Another cruise company, Carnival Cruise Line, also offers voyages out of Baltimore Harbor. After the Key Bridge collapsed, the company moved the Carnival Legend’s operations to Norfolk, Virginia, to allow rescue and remediation efforts to continue at the scene of the disaster.

MSC to base second cruise ship, the Grandiosa, at Port Canaveral starting late next year

MSC Cruises will base a second cruise ship at Port Canaveral , starting late next year, boosting options for cruise passengers and boosting revenue for the port.

The MSC Grandiosa will offer alternating seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, starting in December 2025, which will be the first sailings of that ship out of a U.S. port.

When it comes to Port Canaveral, the Grandiosa will join the MSC Seashore , which will offer three- and four-night cruises from Port Canaveral to Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , MSC's private island in the Bahamas that aims to focus on conservation of marine life.

In announcing the addition of the Grandiosa to the port lineup, Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said the port is "honored that MSC Cruises chose Port Canaveral for the North American debut of their magnificent MSC Grandiosa. Expanding their home-port fleet at Port Canaveral underscores their confidence in our partnership and shared commitment to success."

MSC Cruises USA President Rubén Rodríguez said the winter 2025-26 season will mark MSC's largest presence in the United States to date, "and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that. Ever since we started sailing from Port Canaveral in 2021, our guests have told us they love how convenient that makes it to experience MSC Cruises’ unique international flavor."

MSC Grandiosa — one of MSC Cruises’ "Meraviglia-plus-class" ships — will become MSC Cruises’ largest ship to home-port at Port Canaveral when it arrives next year. It is 1,094 feet long; 141 feet wide; has 2,421 cabins; and has 19 decks, including 15 decks for passengers. It has a passenger capacity of 6,334, plus 1,704 crew members. It began sailings with passengers in 2019.

In comparison, the Seashore has 2,270 cabins, a passenger capacity of 5,877 and crew of 1,648. It began sailings with passengers in 2021.

Both ships rank as among the world's 25 largest cruise ships.

Where will the ship sail to on its seven-night cruises from Port Canaveral ?

How will the addition of the Grandiosa affect revenue at Port Canaveral?

The Grandiosa will roughly double the guaranteed annual revenue Port Canaveral receives from MSC, under a proposed amendment to the port's operating agreement with the cruise line, which Port Canaveral commissioners will vote on at their meeting on Wednesday.

Under the current operating agreement, the annual guaranteed fees payment from MSC to the port is about $6.84 million. That will increase to $13.16 million after the Grandiosa joins the lineup. It will rise to $14.52 million the following year and to $14.95 million the year after that.

The port also will get more parking revenue from MSC cruise passengers, with the second ship and resulting increased passenger counts.

Where is the Grandiosa now?

The Grandiosa currently is doing Mediterranean sailings. Before coming to Port Canaveral, the ship also will do South American sailings out of ports in Brazil.

What other cruise lines have ships based at Port Canaveral?

Carnival, Disney, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. Two other cruise lines will be bringing ships to the port later this year — Princess in November and Celebrity in December.

How big is MSC Cruises?

A Carnival Cruise Line ship that rerouted its departure to Norfolk, Virginia, will return to Baltimore on Sunday as scheduled, the company said in a news release.

Last week, Royal Caribbean said a ship would be leaving Baltimore this coming Saturday “as planned.”

The Dali cargo ship was refloated Monday morning, and the Key Bridge Response Unified Command said Monday afternoon that a 50-feet deep, 400-feet wide channel will be open “soon.” The original 50-feet deep, 700-feet wide channel is expected to be fully restored by the end of the month.

While the ship was stuck in the Patapsco River following its March 26 crash into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, cruise ships have been rerouted through Norfolk.

“We are extremely grateful to the officials and incredible first responders in Baltimore, who’ve shown great leadership and resolve in this difficult time, as well as our supportive partners in Norfolk, whose rapid response allowed us to continue to deliver our scheduled sailings for our guests,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in the release. “It’s been our goal to resume operations in Baltimore as soon as possible, and after working closely with local, state and federal agencies, we look forward to a successful return.”

In 2023, Maryland Port Administration spokesperson Richard Scher said, 444,000 passengers boarded cruises in the terminal, the highest total since 2012. Eight cruise ships are scheduled to depart in June. The cruise terminal primarily services ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines, and the Norwegian Cruise Line also occasionally uses it.

NORFOLK, Va. — Nearly two months after Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International had to re-route their ships to Norfolk following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore , the cruise lines announced plans to return to the Port of Baltimore.

Both cruise lines told 13News Now that the first ships resuming operations in Baltimore are set for this coming weekend.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean International said it "looks forward to returning to the Port of Baltimore once again" where its Vision of the Seas is slated to depart on Saturday, May 25 for a 5-night excursion to The Bahamas.

Carnival Cruise Line shared similar sentiments about returning to the Baltimore port, saying the Carnival Pride will resume operations at the Baltimore port on Sunday, May 26.

“We are extremely grateful to the officials and incredible first responders in Baltimore, who’ve shown great leadership and resolve in this difficult time, as well as our supportive partners in Norfolk, whose rapid response allowed us to continue to deliver our scheduled sailings for our guests,” said Christine Duffy, the company's president. “It’s been our goal to resume operations in Baltimore as soon as possible, and after working closely with local, state and federal agencies, we look forward to a successful return.”

In the wake of the Baltimore bridge collapse on March 26, Baltimore-based operations were temporarily moved to Norfolk. Passengers were then bussed in and out of Norfolk to Baltimore.

The bodies of all six roadwork crews that plunged to their deaths during the bridge collapse have been recovered as of last week .

Additionally, last week, crews demolished the largest remaining steel span of the bridge using explosives. The 21-member crew of the Dali cargo ship were aboard during the controlled demolition.

Meet the Boston architects who designed the largest cruise ship in the world

From a small office in post office square, wilson butler architects has been quietly changing the way people cruise for more than two decades.

L ooking back, it seems like a small innovation and not a particularly exciting one: an ice rink on a cruise ship.

But when Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas debuted 25 years ago, an ice rink on a cruise ship had never been attempted. At the time of its 1999 launch, Voyager was the world’s largest cruise ship, with 3,600 passengers, and the company needed fresh entertainment options to set it apart.

The ice rink idea was pioneering but not without its issues. Chief among them was creating and preserving ice for the rink while at sea and then keeping it level when nothing on a ship stays level. A cruise ship is essentially rattled by a constant series of small earthquakes as waves batter it. The answer to the ice rink problem came from an unlikely source: a small architectural firm in Boston called Wilson Butler Architects , which had never worked on cruise ship design before.

Since that first ice rink, Wilson Butler can lay claim to a long list of innovative cruise ship firsts and superlatives. (One trick to the rink at sea , the firm determined, is making sure the ice temperature hovers at 32 degrees so it stays malleable.) From their office in Post Office Square, the architects went on to design the largest slide on a ship (10 stories high, to be exact), the largest glass dome on a ship (covering 32,000 square feet and weighing 360 tons), the first glass-blowing studio at sea, the first concert hall at sea, the first skydiving simulator at sea, and the largest, and only, urban park on a ship with more than 30,000 real plants.

Their most recent work can be seen on Royal Caribbean’s jaw-dropping Icon of the Seas , the largest ship in the world. The $2 billion ship holds 7,500 passengers and 2,000 crew members. For Icon, the firm created a 53-foot-diameter kinetic art installation called the Pearl that also serves as a structural support, a 700-seat aquatic theater where divers and acrobats entertain in the largest and deepest freshwater pool at sea, a 1,200-seat Broadway-caliber theater, and, staying true to its roots, the largest ice arena at sea. At first glance, the Icon, with its gallimaufry of multicolor slides, tubes, arches, decks, and domes, looks like a phantasmagoric city sprung from the mind of Dr. Seuss.

It’s an impressive achievement for an architectural firm that never set out to design cruise ships and had no background in the industry. When Wilson Butler Architects was formed in 1997, its specialty was theaters, not creating massive slides on megaships.

“Up until that point, the nature of our work had been designing and restoring theaters, like the Bushnell Theater in Hartford,” said Scott Butler, one of the firm’s founders. “So when Royal Caribbean asked if we’d be interested in designing a true theater on a ship, that seemed like a natural fit. It was probably a combination of naivete and overconfidence that led us to say yes. ”

The result of that request was a 1,350-seat theater inspired by grand 19th-century European opera halls. It looked different from anything else on a ship at the time and was revolutionary because the architects moved supports that had previously obstructed audience sightlines.

“They are by far the single most influential architectural partner we have,” said Kelly Gonzalez, senior vice president of architectural design for Royal Caribbean. “They have really gone far beyond to learn about our industry and understand its complexities. They are real partners to our company and real partners with the shipyards that we have them work with.”

Since its first project on Voyager of the Seas, the firm has designed an additional 50 ships for Royal Caribbean, plus Silversea Cruises and Celebrity Cruises , which are owned by Royal Caribbean. The architects and interior designers at Wilson Butler may have accumulated decades of experience designing cruise ships, but ironically, none of them refer to themselves as “cruise people.”

“It helps us that none of us are particularly in love with cruising,” said Rebecca Durante, an interior designer and principal at the firm. “It helps us see a lot of the negatives. We get where these people are coming from, so we’re always looking at how we can make it better for everyone, even the people who feel like they’re getting dragged along.”

Butler said the desire to offer more options for the cruise-hesitant and make the ship feel unique resulted in the Icon’s larger, monumental scale.

“We’re trying to take what people might see as getting on a tin can at sea, being rocked around, dumped on an island, and then herded like cattle back on board, and change the stereotype,” he said. “We’re looking to take that perception of a cruise ship and turn it into something that doesn’t feel the same, where there’s a richness of experiences, where foot traffic flows, where there are places to find solitude, even on a ship the size of the Icon.”

There are detractors — plenty of detractors — when it comes to the Icon of the Seas. The larger the ship, the bigger the hype, the easier the target. Its unique look led one writer from the Guardian to call it “what a human lasagna might look like.” In a piece for the Atlantic, author Gary Shteyngart wrote , “It looks like a hodgepodge of domes and minarets, tubes and canopies, like Istanbul had it been designed by idiots.”

Those opinions have not stopped brisk cabin sales (the first sailing of Icon was sold out months before it launched) and positive reviews , nor has it halted next summer’s launch of Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas , which will be larger than Icon. The Wilson Butler team designed Star of the Seas, and is working on a third sister ship, but details are hush-hush.

Wilson Butler does more than design megaships. Last year, the firm finished work on Silversea’s latest ship, the Silver Nova . The 728-passenger luxury ship prioritizes uninterrupted vistas and expansive windows so passengers can easily see the ocean and ports to connect with their surroundings. The firm has also been involved in the innovative Celebrity Edge series of ships, particularly with the futuristic, design-forward performance space called Eden.

Writer, maritime historian, and YouTuber Peter Knego confessed that he isn’t a fan of megaships but has become enamored of Wilson Butler’s designs over the years. He said he first became aware of the firm in 2016 when he sailed on the Celebrity Solstice and discovered the ship’s Lawn Club . It’s half an acre of live grass where guests can picnic, play lawn games, watch concerts, or relax.

“Solstice is probably my favorite of their work because, aesthetically speaking, it’s just magnificent,” Knego said. “You don’t even have to be on a ship to appreciate the atriums, the interiors, and the artwork. But Wilson Butler was also responsible for the Lawn Club, which sounded kind of ridiculous in concept. But when you experience it, and you’re actually sitting on a lawn 15 decks above the sea, it’s incredible.”

The architects at Wilson Butler continue to design and restore theaters and performance spaces, but they’ve seen their business come full circle. Where once Royal Caribbean was looking for a true theater at sea, theater companies are now looking to the firm to design their performance spaces with the efficiency of those on cruise ships.

“We’ve heard a few iterations of it,” Butler said. “When we did the Calderwood Pavilion at the Cyclorama, they said they hired us because they needed us to fit a theater in a very tight space, like a cruise ship. One of our recent clients, the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in New Bedford, eventually revealed that they hired us because we do cruise ships and know how to move people in and out of a theater, which was one of their problems.”

“But we’ll truly know if it’s come full circle if the theater companies start asking for ice skating rinks,” Butler said with a laugh.
