Tour de France 2021 mid-race tech round-up | Unbranded wheels, fast time-trial equipment, custom paint jobs and more

Tech trends from the biggest bike race of the year

Getty Images

Simon von Bromley

As the cliche goes, the Tour de France is cycling’s biggest and most important event. Every team turns up with its best kit in the hope of winning something, and every sponsor is keen to get its latest product under the spotlight.

Luckily, for those limelight-hungry brands, we’re here to tell you about all the latest and greatest new cycling tech we’ve spotted at the Tour, and no doubt coming to a bike shop near you soon ( subject to strained global supply chains ).

After all, unless you’re the kind of nerd that works in the cycling media (like yours truly), wading through hours of race footage and thousands of press photographs can be time-consuming and dull. You, dear reader, are too good for that. Your time is too precious. So, with that in mind, we’ve done the work for you.

If it’s new bikes you’re interested in, check out our other story on the 10 new bikes we’ve spotted at the 2021 Tour de France , but, for everything else, you’re in the right place.

We’ve curated a selection of the most important tech stories from this year's Tour de France, so you don’t have to worry about missing a thing.

Here’s what you can expect to see:

Non-sponsor correct kit is making a comeback – particularly with wheels

The yellow jersey is using disc brakes, the green jersey is using clinchers, new fast time-trial kit.

  • All the best custom paint jobs

One thing you sadly won’t see here is a new Shimano Dura-Ace groupset . Having had an exclusive first look at what we believe is the next generation of Shimano’s flagship road groupset at the recent Baloise Tour of Belgium, we’ve so far only seen riders using the current generation Dura-Ace R9100 at this year’s Tour.

Just a few short years ago, non-sponsor correct kit was de rigueur in the professional peloton. It was common to see de-badged tyres, saddles, handlebars and other bits of kit on pro bikes, as individual rider tastes were accounted for.

Not all equipment is created equal, but with the rise of house brands , the ever-increasing integration of modern high-end racing bikes, and increasing sponsor influence, opportunities for fussy pros to customise their bikes had appeared to be on the wane. As we’ve commented before, pros don’t always get to choose exactly what they want .

Perhaps following the example of the most successful Grand Tour team of the past decade, Team Ineos Grenadiers (who are famously not afraid of using non-sponsor correct kit ), it seems more WorldTour teams are now willing to risk sponsor ire in search of performance gains.

This year’s Tour sees Jumbo-Visma forgoing Shimano wheels in favour of unmarked Vision wheels for road stages and AeroCoach wheels in time trials.

Jonas Vingegaard during stage 11 of the 2021 Tour de France

We’re reliably informed that the Vision wheels are new models called the Metron 45 SL Disc and Metron 60 SL Disc.

Both wheelsets are said to be 20 per cent wider and around 11 per cent lighter than Vision’s previous top-end road disc brake wheels, Vision naturally claims these latest wheelsets are faster, lighter and easier to handle.

The already mentioned Team Ineos Grenadiers has been using Princeton CarbonWorks, Lightweight and AeroCoach wheels for both road and time trials, again in place of Shimano wheels.

Mathieu van der Poel got hold of a Princeton CarbonWorks rear disc wheel and an AeroCoach Titan front wheel for the crucial time trial in the first week, also at the expense of his team-issue Shimano wheels. He ditched his team-issue Abus time-trial helmet too, in favour of an unbranded Lazer Volante.

Stefan Kung of Groupama-FDJ also switched things up for the time trial, opting for a Shimano-branded Roval 321 rear disc wheel and what looks a lot like a Vision Metron 3 spoke disc front wheel – with the decals removed, of course.

Richie Porte during stage 20 of the 2021 Tour de France

You may be spotting a pattern here. While all of these riders seem perfectly happy using Shimano’s groupsets , it appears many pros aren’t too fond of its wheels.

Chris Froome, meanwhile, has been spotted using Lightweight wheels on his Factor Ostro VAM . This time, though, they’re in place of team-issue Black Inc wheels.

Froome’s Isreal-Start Up Nation teammate, Michael Woods, was also spotted using some rather bold five-spoke carbon wheels on the race’s first rest day. Sadly, these aren’t UCI-legal for mass-start road events, but perhaps we’ll see them in an uphill time trial at some point.

Sergio Hanao of Team Qhubeka NextHash has also been spotted using a pair of unreleased mid-depth Hunt wheels.

Our contact at Hunt confirmed the wheels are a prototype version of the brand's upcoming 36 UD Carbon Spoke Tubular, weighing in at a claimed 1,151g for the pair. That figure compares to a claimed 1,260g for the closest equivalent steel spoked tubular wheelset from Hunt (the Carbon Team Tubular Disc 30 ).

Sergio Henao during stage 8 of the 2021 Tour de France

A day may come when we can finally put this subject to bed for good and never speak of it again, but that day is not today, and so we continue to argue over the theoretical supremacy of two braking systems!

That aside, it is notable that – barring a sudden and dramatic change in fortune for Team Ineos Grenadiers – the Tour de France will, for the very first time, be won by a rider primarily riding a road bike equipped with disc brakes .

Tadej Pogačar during stage 9 of the 2021 Tour de France

That’s because everyone else, including current race leader and yellow jersey wearer Tadej Pogačar, is now using disc brakes for practically all of the road stages.

Whether or not this settles anything remains to be seen…

Current green jersey wear, Mark Cavendish , has been one of the most exciting stories of this year’s Tour. Undoubtedly one of the greatest sprinters of all time, but there can’t have been many who predicted Cavendish would return to form quite so spectacularly.

Helping him to take three stage wins, he and the rest of his Deceuninck–Quick-Step team, have been using Specialized Turbo Cotton clincher tyres with Roval Rapide CLX carbon clincher wheels .

Mark Cavendish during stage 11 of the 2021 Tour de France

It’s something the Belgian team has been doing for a while now because Specialized is adamant this setup is its fastest (despite previously making a big song and dance about how tubeless tyres were the next big thing , but we’ll forget about that for now). And, to be fair, it’s hard to argue with the results.

It seems Bora-Hansgrohe (another WorldTour team sponsored by Specialized) has also taken notice because it announced its riders would also only be using Specialized Turbo Cotton and S-Works Turbo clincher tyres on Roval wheels during the Tour de France.

Patrick Konrad and Tadej Pogačar during stage 10 of the 2021 Tour de France

We’ve already touched on some of the wheels used in the first time trial at this year’s Tour, but – as always with time trials – there’s plenty more tech to talk about.

We saw lots of custom front ends, especially among those riders aiming for a good result. Given body positioning and the leading edge are both so important to aerodynamics, this is an area many teams have spent a lot of time (and money) optimising.

Mathieu Van Der Poel during stage 5 of the 2021 Tour de France

Van der Poel was using unbranded aero kit from AeroCoach, for example, while custom aero extensions from Speedbar.nl adorned stage winner Tadej Pogačar’s Colnago time trial bike. Michael Woods also had some fancy front end kit from UK-based brand Wattshop .

Teams sponsored by Vision, such as Jumbo-Visma and EF Education–Nippo, also had custom-moulded carbon fibre aero extensions on the bikes of key riders like Primož Roglič and Stefan Bessigger.

Stefan Bissegger during the 2021 Tour de France

On the leading edge, Max Walscheid of Team Qhubeka NextHash had a new Ekoi time-trial helmet. It’s a classic teardrop design with a mirrored visor covering the rider's eyes and ears.

As usual, big chainrings were popular, with many riders using 58-tooth chainrings up front. It appears Walscheid went one step further than everyone else and used a 60-tooth big ring on his time-trial bike , though.

Jumbo-Visma riders also had an updated version of Lazer’s Volante time-trial helmet. Perhaps hoping to avoid a situation where removing the visor exposes the rider's ears in a slightly unflattering (and perhaps less aerodynamic) manner, the updated helmet now covers the ears with or without the visor.

Richard Carapaz of Team Ineos Grenadiers also had a new, and as yet unreleased, Kask time-trial helmet. It looks very similar to the Kask Bambino Pro Evo but with the tail chopped off.

Max Walscheid during stage 5 of the 2021 Tour de France

Pello Bilbao of Team Bahrain Victorious also had a team-only unpainted Merida Warp TT time-trial bike. Presumably, the aim was to save weight, but given performance in a time trial like this one is primarily determined by a rider's power and aerodynamic drag, it may have been a lot of work for not much gain.

What likely did help him, however, was his new skinsuit (because skinsuits cover your body, they can potentially make a significant difference to a rider’s aerodynamic efficiency). Made by team sponsor Alé, the so-called Space Jet skinsuit is using new fabrics that use surface texture roughness to help generate a turbulent boundary layer around the rider in key locations, and reduce aerodynamic drag.

Pello Bilbao during stage 5 of the 2021 Tour de France

We’ve seen similar tech from a number of different clothing brands in recent years, and the concept is even used to make aero socks these days. What a time to be alive.

Lastly, though his setup wasn’t the most optimised on show, Michael Schar of AG2R Citroën Team takes the Flat Back Award for the most aggressive time-trial position on show. Well done to him.

Michael Schär during stage 5 of the 2021 Tour de France

Snazzy custom paint jobs

Yes, paint adds weight to a bike, but it can also look really cool. In our opinion, there’s nothing better than a snazzy special-edition paint job.

Mathieu Van Der Poel during stage 8 of the 2021 Tour de France

We’ve already covered Mathieu van der Poel’s yellow Canyon Aeroad CFR in a separate article, but it’s worth another inclusion here.

Likewise, we covered Julian Alaphilippe’s world champion themed Specialized Tarmac SL7 back in April, but we’ve had another chance to ogle here at the Tour.

Tadej Pogačar has also been riding a Colnago V3Rs in half black, half yellow form. Perhaps Colnago doesn’t want to tempt fate by going full yellow before the race is actually won, or maybe they’re just worried about adding too much weight.

Spreading the love more equitably, the entire Trek-Segafredo team has been riding Trek bikes with some stunning red paint jobs from Trek’s Project One custom programme. More bikes like this, please.

Tour de france tech: what to look for and how to spot it, the tour de france usually brings with it a slew of new bikes and gear. here's what to look for at the 2020 tour, and how to spot it..

With the Tour de France finally knocking on our door, ready to treat us to July theatrics in a brand new month, it is with great relief that we tech nerds can finally scour the peloton for all the new bits we’re usually treated to. (If nothing else, it’s nice to talk about something besides the masks riders are wearing, although we’ll undoubtedly be treated to some unique mask executions — looking at you, Peter Sagan .)

  • Tour de France 2020
  • Tech podcast: Big tech moments from the Tour de France
  • Tour de France 2019 Stage 1 gear and tech gallery

While I usually get to head over to the Tour de France to sniff out new tech, I’ll be watching from home this year, just like you. That means I’ll have my eyes trained on the computer screen in hopes of spotting the new and the cool. Here’s what I’ll be looking for, and what you can look for too as you watch this year’s battle for yellow.

What’s new: Like the bicycles in the race, helmets are in the process of undergoing a bit of a personality crisis. It used to be that riders chose either the most aero helmet or the lightest and best-ventilated. Now, helmets are combining all of those things into one lid. Nifty internal ventilation channels allow air to flow over the rider’s head without the traditional large vents, though that doesn’t help much on slow, hot climbs, so those lightweight, airy lids still exist for good reason.

Giant Rev Pro MIPS

Giant recently launched its Rev MIPS helmet , so expect to see that on Team CCC riders. It’s a good example of a helmet combining good venting with aerodynamics.  Trek-Segafredo riders will still be sporting Bontrager’s Wavecel-equipped helmets . Bora-Hansgrohe and Deceuninck-Quick-Step riders can choose from Specialized’s S-Works Prevail II, or the Evade helmet.

When and where to spot it:  This is purely speculation, but keep an eye on Specialized riders. The Prevail II helmet hasn’t been updated in a few years now, so it’s certainly due for a redesign. Trek-Segafredo riders may opt for non-Wavecel helmets too; while Wavecel is a promising system, it tends to be quite hot.

Giro has also been relatively quiet on the road side recently. Will we see a new lid from Giro at the 2020 Tour? The company just launched a new MTB helmet recently, and the team at Giro is a surprisingly small one, so we may not see anything this year. Still, the Aether and the Vanquish have both been on the market for some time now, so an update to either one isn’t out of the question.

What’s new: My goodness, what  isn’t new about bikes this year? Bike stables seem to be a thing of the past as aero bikes and all-around bikes become one and the same. We already know about the Specialized S-Works Tarmac and the Trek Emonda, as well as BMC’s revamped Teammachine SLR 01. Giant also has a new bike this year that we’ve seen in various races. Those are the big players who have already had their moments in the spotlight. So keep an eye on the rest of the pack.

Jumbo-Visma, for example, has recently become the powerhouse team in the peloton. Will Bianchi have something new for its riders? If nothing else, we may be treated to custom paint jobs on Bianchi bikes should one of its riders capture the yellow jersey for any extended period of time.

The 2020 Tour de France is one for the climbers, with only four real sprint-heavy days. So it should come as no surprise that bikes have trended away from pure aero into a more do-it-all design.

Tarmac SL7

When and where to spot it:  It’s not uncommon for the Tour de France to start with a time trial, but that’s not the case this year. A generally flat stage 1 means we’ll see the finest aero bikes the peloton has to offer, as well as the new class of aero-all-rounders like Specialized’s S-Works Tarmac. Stage 2 heads straight to the mountains, so it’s here we’ll see wispy climbing machines. Expect teams to show off new wares early.

Time trials also offer a great opportunity to spot not only new bikes, but unique set-ups. In the past, teams have dabbled with technology on TT bikes before jumping in with both feet during regular stages (see: disc brakes). And since this year’s Tour de France features a unique time trial that could see riders make a bike swap from a dedicated TT bike to an all-around bike halfway through, those transitions could give us all a good opportunity to glance a rider’s gear choices, customizations, and setups. Of course, we won’t be treated to any TT action until stage 20, so you’ll need to be patient.

What’s new : You would think by now that the disc brake drama would be settled, with most teams and riders now on disc brakes full time. But recently, Wout van Aert won Strade Bianche on rim brakes, and Davide Formolo finished second just behind him, also on a rim-brake-equipped bike. (Formolo would go on to win stage 3 of the 2020 Critérium du Dauphiné on that same rim brake bike).

Does it matter? Sort of, but not really. Yes, disc brakes are heavier, but that doesn’t so much matter anymore, given how light frames and wheels are. There are other factors that might sway a rider to opt for rim brakes over discs, but those reasons are fewer and less relevant these days. There are differences in ride quality between disc brake wheels and rim brake wheels, but again, those differences are so subtle they’re not likely to matter much to pros solely focused on going fast, often at the expense of comfort.

tour de tech

If a rider is still using rim brakes, you can likely chalk it up to tradition and habit.

When and where to spot it : Expect to see the vast majority of riders using disc brakes, and a few holdouts using rim brakes — most likely on climbing bikes, underneath the wispiest of climbers. At this point, rim brakes are simply a weight-saving decision, and since frame and wheel weights have come down so drastically in recent years, allowing bikes to go well below the UCI’s 6.8kg minimum weight rule, even with disc brakes, it’s not really necessary to ditch the discs for weight savings anymore. Sprinters will almost exclusively ride disc brakes for the reliability, better braking power, and modulation.

Keep in mind too that many bicycle manufacturers have transitioned away from rim brakes entirely, which means many riders may not have a choice but to ride disc brakes. If you see rim brakes at all, you’ll see them on climbing stages.

Wheels and tires

What’s new: Tubeless, baby. Who’s using it? Who’s still on tubulars? What teams are using a mix of both? Last year Deceuninck-Quick-Step used tubeless setups with great success. We’ve seen riders use tubeless tires during time trials in the past too. Mitchelton-Scott experimented with tubeless tires on training rides, but it wasn’t clear if any riders actually used them in competition. Could that change this year? With Pirelli now offering a tubeless race tire, it seems almost certain.

And yes, there is gravel on the menu at the Tour de France, but not enough to really factor in to tire or wheel choice in a major way.

Wheels are getting deeper, even on climbing bikes. While climbers have traditionally trended toward lower profile rims for weight savings, recent testing and research indicates that deeper-section wheels are actually more advantageous in many climbing situations.

tour de tech

When and where to spot it : Climbing stages (obviously!) will offer the best opportunity to spot whether riders are choosing deep-section wheels over climbing wheels. The course profile for a given stage will matter a lot here: Riders will be more likely to choose lower profile rims when stages include a significant amount of steep sections. On more rolling stages, and on climbing stages with climbs that don’t go much past 6 percent grade with any consistency, look for riders to reach for deeper-section wheels (likely in the 35-45mm range).

Sprinters will likely use deeper rims — sometimes in the order of 60mm deep — on sprint stages, unless the wind is likely to factor in for much of the day. It’s possible even the sprinters might choose a lower-profile rim if the wind is blowing hard enough.

Customization

What’s new : Greipel the Gorilla. The Shark of Messina. The Manx Missile. Nicknames abound in the peloton, and some marquee riders get custom paint and graphics to celebrate their monikers. Other riders get their palmares represented on top tubes, and of course, GC leaders often get yellow bar tape, yellow helmets, yellow shoes, yellow… well, you get the idea.

With Jumbo-Visma already in the middle of a remarkable season, it’s possible we’ll see Bianchi abandon — albeit temporarily — its legendary celeste blue for yellow. Will Richard Carapaz have some pink to show on his bike to celebrate his Giro victory?

tour de tech

When and where to spot it:  Sagan, Sagan, Sagan. It’s certain Specialized will treat the peloton’s most popular rider to yet another custom paint job for his bikes. But keep an eye on other riders with stories to tell. Carapaz is a good bet, as is Wout van Aert, given his recent string of victories. Caleb Ewan had a notable string of wins in 2019 that could be worthy of custom graphics. And of course, with Trek’s in-house Project One facilities, it’s likely Trek-Segafredo riders will have some flashy paint to show off.

Hot, Hot Heat

What’s new: Nothing, really. It’s just cool to see how riders keep themselves, well, cool. In the team paddocks, riders often prepare for a stage in front of fans, and on the hottest days, some opt to wear cooling vests that have ice or cold water inside. Others simply shove cold water bottles down their jerseys.

tour de tech

When and where to spot it:  Out on the road, you’re likely to see riders dump water on their heads. That’s about as complex as cooling gets when the heat of racing is on. Some teams use ‘ice socks’ — stretches of pantyhose filled with ice and tied off. But these require contact with team cars, whereas water bottles can be grabbed from many sources. If the cameras happen to show shots of the riders warming up before the stage or cooling down afterward, you’ll see plenty of fans, icy water bottles, cooling vests, and the like.

…and masks

What’s new:  It’s funny to think that just six months ago, the idea of social distancing and mask-wearing was strange and new. Now it’s commonplace, and while riders aren’t wearing masks during the racing, they do wear them before and after the race. Riders are even hopping up onto the podium with face coverings.

Daniel Oss. Critérium du Dauphiné. Photo: James Startt

It should come as no surprise that Peter Sagan took the opportunity to customize his mask, mirroring his “Why So Serious?” tattoo. (Daniel Oss, above, wore the same mask at Critérium du Dauphiné.) Keep an eye out for more custom masks among the more colorful riders in the peloton. The vast majority of riders will be wearing disposable masks, though some also wear masks emblazoned with team names and logos.

When and where to spot it : Basically any time a rider gets interviewed these days, masks will be present, front and center. Rider sign-in and podium ceremonies are other good opportunities to spot what new face fashions riders are sporting.

The Best Gear and Custom Equipment of the Tour de France

From pinstriped shoes to custom aero extensions and frame graphics, here is the coolest tech of the Tour.

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

While 2018 was undoubtedly the year of the aero bike—we were inundated with new aero road bikes in the days leading up to the Tour and each was touted as faster than the next—this year doesn’t have the same buzz around the space age-looking bikes. But a few brands like Cannondale , Scott, Wilier , and Pinarello updated bikes in their lineups that were previously regarded as climbing bikes. Following Specialized’s lead , even bikes that are made for the flyweight climbers have some aerodynamic optimization. Generally speaking, we’re seeing a gradual convergence of aero and lightweight bikes. Aero bikes are getting lighter and approaching the UCI-imposed weight limit of 6.8 kg. And with that floor artificially set at 6.8 kg, the climbing bikes are getting more aero as brands learn how to add strength, stiffness, and aero shaping without adding weight.

Disc brakes are also becoming widely accepted. In some cases, it’s an internal decision by the team to keep everyone on disc brakes, and in others it’s forced on teams and riders by the brands. One thing is for certain: The rim-brake-only teams in the WorldTour are a dying breed.

Possibly one of the greatest parts of the Tour de France, from the gear side, is that we get three full weeks to obsess over the minutiae of all the gear being used, and the special hacks and adaptations riders and mechanics make to get their equipment perfect. From custom shoes to mixing Shimano Sprint Shifters with SRAM, and custom aero extensions to duct-taped forearm pads, we’ve combed through hundreds of images from the Tour to not only bring you the highlights, but also to show you where you can buy some of it for yourself (okay, maybe you’ll have to race the Tour to get a polka-dot SRM, but you get the point).

Wend Wax-On Chain Wax These days, much attention is paid to reducing friction in the drivetrain. This EF-Education First Cannondale SuperSlice has a waxed chain. It doesn’t last very long, but it lasts long enough for a time trial and offers a statistically significant reduction in drag over most standard chain lubricants. Competitive Cyclist | $22

Power2Max NG Road Cannondale Power Meter While SRAM is trying to convince us that the little/little gear combo is better, this EF-Education First rider isn’t buying it. Lucky for him, he’s on a Shimano team, so he can use this 55t pie plate with his Power2Max power meter. Power2Max | $1,115

Specialized S-Works Evade with ANGi Peter Sagan sports his Sagan Collection Specialized S-Works Evade with ANGi crash sensor . While we don’t expect ANGi to be sending alerts to his emergency contacts in the event of a crash, ANGi can alert team medical staff if it detects forces capable of causing a concussion. EF-Education First uses Tacx bottles and cages, and this rider has opted to start with one bottle of mix and one bottle of water. Amazon | $18

SRM PC8 It’s customary for sponsors to treat riders to some custom gear if they find themselves in a leader’s jersey. In this case, Tim Wellens had the honor of riding a polka-dot Ridley Helium SLX, complete with a polka dot cover on his SRM PC8. Competitive Cyclis t | $750

Sigma ROX 12.0 Sport Team Sunweb uses the Sigma ROX 12.0 Sport computer. Although not as big of a brand as Garmin or Wahoo, these little computers are essentially a miniature android smartphone for your bicycle. Amazon | $475

Campagnolo SRM Power Meter Vincenzo Nibali has a new Shark of Messina logo on his Merida Reacto Team-E. If it’s possible to talk about aero road bikes and old school in the same sentence, we can do it here. Rim brakes are quickly fading from the WorldTour peloton, and especially brakes tucked under the bottom bracket. And in a world flush with power meter options, Nibali’s bike is outfitted with a Campagnolo SRM crank, which was the gold standard for many years. Competitive Cyclist | $2,499

Bicycle part, Bicycle frame, Bicycle wheel, Bicycle handlebar, Bicycle, Vehicle, Hybrid bicycle, Road bicycle, Bicycle fork, Bicycle saddle,

Custom Graphics Custom graphics that go along with a rider's nickname are very much en vogue. Here we see André Greipel’s BH G7 Disc 6.5 with a fierce-looking gorilla on the head tube.

Bianchi Oltre XR4 frameset Dylan Groenewegen’s Bianchi Oltre XR4 sports an intricate custom paint job that begins at the head tube and continues back over the top and down tubes. R&A Cycles | $4,500

Vehicle, Auto part, Carbon, Automotive exterior, Car, Automotive mirror, Wheel,

Custom Aero Extensions The Mitchelton-Scott time trial bikes are outfitted with a variety of custom aero extensions from Watt Shop, a custom carbon manufacturer in the UK. Extensions like these will set you back about $1,900

Bicycle part, Bicycle wheel, Bicycle handlebar, Bicycle, Vehicle, Hybrid bicycle, Bicycle frame, Road bicycle, Bicycle saddle, Photography,

Specialized S-Works Shiv Module Hydraulic disc brakes might be the greatest thing to happen to time trial bikes since Greg Lemond rolled down the Champs-Élysées with a funny-looking handlebar, so it’s odd to see this S-Works Shiv sporting a cable-actuated rim brake, as both Bora-Hansgrohe and Deceuninck-QuickStep ride the S-Works Shiv Disc. Specialized | $4,500

Tips To Complete Xtreme Carnival Ensemble Event In Genshin Impact

Quick links, how to start the xtreme carnival ensemble event, xtreme carnival ensemble event songs, how to play xtreme carnival ensemble, tips for playing xtreme carnival ensemble.

Genshin Impact 's Inazuma is currently host to the Iridescent Arataki Rockin' For Life Tour De Force Of Awesomeness. The event sees the return of some musical mini-games you can play as you help Arataki and Dvorak host the much-anticipated tour.

Genshin Impact: Iridescent Arataki Rockin For Life Tour Event Guide

Xtreme Carnival Ensemble Event comprises seven songs which you can play along with on a variety of instruments. In this guide we offer a few simple tips to help you rock the venue and reap the rewards.

You can play the Xtreme Carnival Ensemble event immediately after you unlock the main festival. Simply read your invitation , head over to the most Northern waypoint on Watatsumi Island in Inazuma and prepare to rock.

Once you've watched through Aratakki's intro, Dvorak will appear just to the right of the empty stage . Simply talk to him , and when asked if you want to practice some music just select 'I'll have a go' and you'll be taken straight to the song selection screen.

There are seven songs in all , each one tied to a character and one of the seven elements used in the game. They are:

Every song has four difficulties. Normal, Hard, and Pro are unlocked by default and The One and Oni King is unlocked after reaching Dulcem on Pro difficulty. The first three difficulties have associated rewards . These include:

  • Iridescence Tour Tickets (Used to unlock Gorgu)
  • Character levelling materials
  • Weapon levelling materials

Every song is themed to its character and the instrument and theme vary . All icons are based on the character's element by default, and the instruments match the song's sound. You can change these in the settings if you wish.

Which instrument and theme are used does not make a difference to the difficulty of the song.

This is a simple rhythm game. You have six different keys/buttons corresponding to the six lines of notes on the screen. Each note takes the form of an icon , and you need to press the correct button when the note hits the circle along the line at the bottom of the screen.

In the image above, the note has just hit the circle and this position is considered perfect , as you can see from the notification above.

If the icon is elongated, as shown in the image above, you need to press and hold the corresponding button. A second slightly translucent image of the icon will appear at the end of the note. Let go when this second icon hits the bottom line.

It's that simple.

The game is relatively easy to get the hang of but there are a few things you can do if you are finding it difficult, especially on harder levels.

Change The Settings

The game has settings which allow you to do the following:

  • Calibrate the game - This ensures your button presses are timed with the note hitting the correct spot.
  • Enable low latency mode - This can help improve keystroke accuracy.
  • Add a beat note (metronome) - This tone will play in the background of the song to help you keep time.
  • Change the speed of the falling notes from 75% to 200% - This can help you adjust to your preference.

If you change the note speed you'll still have the same number of notes in the same order and at the same time apart. They will just fall faster or slower, and as a result you'll end up with either more or fewer on screen at once.

You can also change the theme and instrument but these don't make any difference game play wise.

Play With The Beat Map

The beat map editor is a separate feature and doesn't give you rewards or points. However, it does help you understand the rhythm of the music without distractions.

It shows the interface, but instead of notes falling down, you see a red line which hits the bottom on beats in the music, where it recommends notes are added. You can add notes wherever you like to create your own composition, but just listening to the music and watching the lines will help you understand the kind of beats to listen out for.

A red line means the existing compositions likely have notes here, so knowing what beats will have notes can help you get to grips with the timing of each piece.

Try All The Songs

If you find a song difficult, will likely depend on your experience with rhythm games and your innate musical sense and timing. However, the tone of the song also affects difficulty for many people.

All the music is varied here, with different instruments, tones and beats . Play through them all and see which you prefer. Once you've found it practice that one to get a wider grasp of the game before moving on to become a musical master.

Tour de France 2022 tech trends: Who won with what?

Which bikes, wheels, and components won the most stages on the biggest stage?

wout van aert on a new cervelo s5

Have you caught your breath yet? It felt like an unusually frantic Tour de France this year, with outright favourite Tadej Pogačar in seemingly unbeatable form in the early stages of the race before being dethroned in the high mountains by a dominant team performance by Jumbo-Visma and the eventual winner Jonas Vingegaard .

As always the racing provides the main headlines, but in the background, there are trends, winners and losers aside from the crop of riders. Disc brakes finally put rim brakes to the sword, and tubeless tyres made big in-roads too against their established rivals.

As well as the nerdy tech trends there was the standard menu of new bikes , strange tech , and special edition kit and paint jobs to gawp at as you imagine yourself as part of the peloton for three weeks.

a purple and white cervelo s5

Battle of the brands

Of all the brands on show at the Tour, only ten can lay claim to a stage win, which is a more diverse selection than the seven from last year.

An extremely dominant showing from Jumbo-Visma meant that this year Cervélo topped the charts with six stage wins, three for the new Cervélo S5 under Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte , two for the lightweight R5 under the winner, Jonas Vingegaard , and one for the TT P5, also under Wout van Aert .

The defending champion from 2021, Tadej Pogačar , valiantly helped Colnago to second place with three stage wins atop the V3Rs.

Incredibly, considering it bagged a whopping seven stages last year, the giant that is Specialized only managed two stages - the first two - this time around.

Wheels of fortune

By playing a part not only in Jumbo-Visma's stage wins but also those of Ineos Grenadiers and Alpecin-Deceuninck, Shimano sits head and shoulders above the other wheel brands with eight wins, twice as many as it had last year. It would have been nine had Van Aert not run Reserve wheels (a sister brand to Cervélo) on his TT bike for the penultimate stage.

As with the bikes, the Italians came in second, with Campagnolo picking up three wins under Pogačar, and one more under Bob Jungels .

Winning the tyre war

This is big news: More than half the stages on the 2022 Tour de France were won on tubeless tyres.

The same number of stages, 11, were also won by riders using Vittoria tyres, though not the same eleven.

This wasn't a case of a single brand using one system and skewing the results either, as Jumbo-Visma used a mix of both tubulars and tubeless depending on the terrain; tubulars for Vingegaard's high mountain victories, and tubeless for Van Aert and Laporte on the flats.

Pogačar and Jungels were still resolutely flying the flag for inner tubes on their Campagnolo wheels, but it's beginning to feel like, despite posh TPU inner tubes being used, it's a dying tech, along with tubulars. Specialized teams have moved away from the brand's 'inner tubes are faster' line and have gone tubeless too.

An honourable mention has to go to the set of GP5000 S TR tyres that Tom Pidcock descended like a man possessed on to set himself up for a historic victory on Alpe d'Huez .

Trek-Segafredo Trek Madone at the Tour de France 2022

A(nother) bad year for SRAM

Sixteen stage wins again for Shimano this year, which isn't a huge surprise given it's the largest equipment sponsor. Pogačar and Jungels again teamed up to ensure second place went to the Italian contingent, and Mads Pedersen saved the blushes of SRAM by bagging them a single-stage victory. This is the second year running that the Americans have only netted a single win. Considering Campagnolo only had three teams in the race, compared to the 16 of Shimano, it has a better strike rate despite fewer actual wins.

For stats nerds, this is exactly the same split as the 2021 edition of the race.

  • Road bike groupsets : A complete overview of today's best groupsets, no matter your budget

A close up image of Tadej Pogačar's new Colnago Prototipo bike

Rim brakes are dead

Pour one out for the valiant rim brake, for its time at the very top of the sport is done. This is it. It's finally happened. Every stage of the 2022 Tour de France was won on disc brakes, and the eventual winner rode discs for every stage of the race.

Despite the best efforts of Chris Froome in video format, and a few wins from Pogačar last year, it's time for some of us to admit defeat.

Wins and losses for new bikes

The new Trek Madone and the new Cervélo S5 were the only new bikes to bag a stage win, with the new Pinarello Bolide, Colnago TT-1, Canyon Ultimate, Cube Litening, and KTM Revelator coming away empty-handed.

Estate agent fees are one of the big expenses in selling a house - but rule changes and the rise of private sale websites have made it more common for people to go it alone.

But how easy is it - and what do you need to know? We spoke to industry experts to find out.

Firstly, what do estate agents do for their money?

An estate agent will typically charge in the range of 1%-3.5% of the sale price.

That means for the average house price (£284,691 from December) you could pay anywhere from £2,846 to £9,964 in commission fees.

"When you use an estate agent, their fee includes taking professional photographs, advertising your home, conducting property viewings, and negotiating a price on your behalf," says Jack Smithson  from the home ownership site  Better.co.uk .

In addition, an estate agent will compile comprehensive details of your house, including room sizes and descriptions of fixtures and fittings.

"They will also provide a concise write-up about the local area, highlighting amenities, schools, and transportation links," Jack adds.

And they'll conduct checks on buyers for you (more on this later).

It sounds like a lot, but...

"Selling your home yourself can be a manageable process with a few key steps," Jack says.

Preparation

You should begin by thoroughly researching house prices in your area, using websites like Rightmove and Zoopla - but seek free valuations from local estate agents to ensure you have a realistic asking price in mind.

Next, you want to take high-quality photos of your house.

Jack advises using tutorials on YouTube to learn new shooting and editing techniques that can take you to the next level.

You then want to write down what makes your home unique.

"While browsing other listings for inspiration, take it a step further by emphasising what you love about living in your home and the surrounding area," Jack suggests.

"Whether it's the refreshing scent of the coastline or the tranquil sounds of village life, incorporating these details can help potential buyers visualise living there," he advises.

Like using YouTube for photography tips, you can use free tools such as ChatGPT and Grammarly if you need help with your writing, Jack says.

Advertising

This is probably the biggest perk of going through an established estate agent - your home is much more likely to be viewed because they will have an established audience and a market. But it's very possible to do it alone.

"When it comes to advertising your home, explore a variety of avenues including local newspapers and social media," Jack says.

"Consider using websites like Strike, which allow individuals to list their properties for free on platforms like Rightmove," he suggests.

Viewings

Once you've secured some viewings, you've got the opportunity to make it a bit more personal than estate agents ever could - a real advantage.

"Explain the reasons behind your decision to purchase the property, highlight its unique features, and share the aspects of your neighbourhood that make it a desirable place to live," Jack says.

The small things matter when showing people round - so try to take an objective look around before you bring anyone in.

Do the things you'd do normally - make sure it smells nice and it's clean and tidy.

"Lastly, it's worth knowing that you must legally provide potential buyers with a free Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)."

The sale itself

Perhaps the most daunting aspect is the physical exchange of contracts and money.

An estate agent would typically oversee the process of the initial offer acceptance to the transfer of keys to the new owner.

However, if you go it alone, you'll need to become the central point of contact - bridging the gap between your solicitor or conveyancer and the buyer and their legal representative.

"Once you've accepted an offer on your property, your first task is to draft what's called a memorandum of sale," Jack says.

This document is a written confirmation of your acceptance of the offer and details the agreed price along with any specific conditions you've both agreed to.

"It's then recommended to engage the services of a solicitor or conveyancer to ensure all legal obligations are met," Jack says (of course, you'll need to do this even if you have an estate agent).

The cost of hiring one typically ranges from a few hundred to over £1,000, depending on factors such as fixed fees, hourly rates, the complexity of the sale and additional costs like property searches or land registry fees.

"In the absence of an estate agent, you'll be responsible for keeping your buyer informed about the progress of the sale. This involves regular updates on the status of legal procedures and any relevant developments," Jack says, before adding that this can actually be a good thing.

"By taking on these responsibilities independently, you'll have greater control over the sale process. However, it will require you to be exceptionally organised, and you'll need to be very good at communicating too."

Any risks to be aware of?

Rita Patel, legal director at law firm  Browne Jacobson , tells us the biggest risk for people selling their properties without an estate agent is the lack of a vetting and verification process of the potential buyer.

Estate agents will verify the buyer's identity and check the buyer's proof and source of funds - without this, there's no way to assess the buyer is legitimate and can afford to buy.

"Whilst this process is something lawyers can help with, this is often at an additional cost, and you'll need to start from square one if there is an issue with a potential buyer's identification and/or financial eligibility," Rita says.

More generally, selling without an agent can extend the time it takes to sell.

"Zoopla suggests this timeframe is normally around 17-34 weeks, but with no one on hand to consistently promote and drive the property sale at all stages, going solo drags this process out," Rita says.

"Agents can also help mediate any potential breakdowns in communication between the buyer and seller - reducing the likelihood of having to go back to market and start again."

The advantages

Laura Owen-Brown, a PR manager from Gloucestershire, tells us she is set to sell her house without an estate agent in the near future.

"My disappointment with estate agents stems from their lack of familiarity with the properties they attempted to sell me when I was buying my current house," she says.

"They couldn't tell me about the details that truly matter, like the optimal times for sunlight in the garden, how much council tax I'd pay, what the roof was made of, the places I could walk my dog off lead or the impact of post-football match traffic on Sundays.

"These types of details can shape the experience of living in a house for years and are just as important as the square footage, EPC rating or how many bedrooms a property has," she adds.

She says the current "transactional" approach to selling houses feels "impersonal and outdated" to her.

"Yes, I'll have to handle more admin, but the savings in both money and time will make it worthwhile. Liaising with buyers and solicitors directly without a third party slowing everything down will mean I can be in control and have transparency throughout the process, especially during negotiations," she says.

All in all...

As Laura says, it's very much a case of whether you can stomach the admin and are happy to take the risks on background financial checks.

If you are aware of all the above and willing to take on the organisational burden, you could save yourself a serious chunk of cash.

As we've been reporting in the Money blog over the last few months, an increasing number of cities are either imposing or increasing the cost of tourist taxes on visitors.

Many say they are preventing damages from overtourism, as well as funding local infrastructure and businesses.

Here are the latest tourist fees for the most popular spots in Europe...

Tourists visiting Venice for the day will have to pay a €5 entry fee to enter the city between the hours of 8.30am and 4pm.

Meanwhile, those staying overnight in Venice are charged a fee between €1 to €5 within the accommodation price for the first five consecutive nights.

People visiting the Spanish city now have to pay €3.25 if they're staying in official accommodation, up from €2.75.

Manchester

Visitors must pay £1 per room, per night across 73 hotels.

The scheme, which has raised more than £2m within a year, is for improvements to attract more tourists.

Tourists must pay €2 per person for every night they stay, although this is only applied for a maximum of seven nights.

The Greek government has introduced a Climate Crisis Resilience Fee to charge tourists anywhere from €0.50 to €10 per room, per night.

The amount depends on the hotel category and the time of year.

Visitors to the Croatian city must pay €2.65 per person, per night throughout April to September.

However, the fee has been temporarily reduced to €1.86 for the rest of this year.

Different amounts are charged depending on the type of accommodation.

The most expensive charge is €14.95 for a stay in palaces, and €0.65 at one or two-star campsites, per person, per night.

Those staying in a typical four-star hotel are charged around €8.

Those staying in the Hungarian capital are charged an additional 4% each night, which is calculated based on the price of the room.

Tourists in Berlin must pay 5% of the room price, excluding VAT and service fees.

The tourist tax here has increased from €0.82 to €1.97 per day.

The main topics from the Money blog that got you commenting this week were...

Government-funded childcare

  • Michel Roux Jr's comments about the future of the restaurant industry

Nearly 600 new skyscrapers for London

From last Sunday, eligible working parents of children from nine-months-old in England have been able to register for access to up to 15 free hours of government-funded childcare per week.

Those hours can be claimed from September.

Some readers pointed out the T&Cs...

This 15 hrs a week is for term time ONLY. So full-time working parents will have to either tell their employer they can't work in school holidays or pro-rata it across the year which is 10 hours a week. Yvonne grandma

Others said it spoke to issues in the wider childcare sector...

Is the government going to give pay rises to nursery staff? They are very low paid staff, and can't get enough staff as it is!! Nurseries may have to close if they don't get staff, so parents won't be able to take up the offer!! What is the government going to do about it? Carol

Chefs or delivery drivers?

Celebrity chef Michel Roux Jr has suggested that restaurants may only open three days per week because young people prefer other jobs - like delivering parcels.

"Just because I worked 80 hours a week or more doesn't mean the next generation should," he said.

"Quite the contrary. That is something that we have to address in our industry."

Readers said...

That's because one [job] is on the verge of slave labour and one definitely is slave labour. And the latter I'm referring to is working in a kitchen for a chef.  Realist2024
Spent 35 years working as a chef. Young people nowadays are not willing to do the extra hours (usually unpaid) and work every weekend. Godsends like my generation of chefs did and do.  Bucks

There's been considerable backlash in our comments section after a thinktank said a total of 583 skyscrapers are "queuing up in the pipeline" to be built across central London.

That is more than double the 270 built in the past decade...

"600 new skyscrapers on way for London" while the majority are struggling. When will something serious be done about growing wealth inequality in the UK? A growing economy is useless while the gap between the ultra rich and everyone else increases. Qwerty1
How many unnecessary skyscrapers for London? It's fine, as long as they are not made using steel, glass, concrete or bricks - don't people know there's a climate emergency? Shanghaiwan
Who's paying for it? What about the North? treelectrical

The energy price cap is set to fall by about 7% in July, a respected energy markets researcher has said.

Ahead of next Friday's announcement by Ofgem for the July-September period, Cornwall Insights said: "For a typical dual fuel household, we predict the July price cap to be £1,574 per annum" - a drop from £1,690.

Looking further ahead, it forecasted the cap will rise again slightly in October, before falling in January next year.

"A predicted 7% drop in energy prices in July is clearly good news, with the price cap looking likely to hit its lowest level in over two years," a spokesperson for Uswitch said.

Around 100 more prosecutions of sub-postmasters unrelated to the Horizon scandal could be "tainted" , a Sky News investigation has found, as officials worked with now discredited Post Office investigators to secure convictions.

The prosecutions of Post Office staff were led by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) between 2001 and 2006.

It is understood these usually involved the cashing in of stolen order books.

The Post Office itself wrongly prosecuted hundreds of sub-postmasters between 1999 and 2015 - based on evidence from the faulty Horizon accounting system.

The Body Shop’s administrators are to launch an auction of the chain after concluding that an alternative restructuring of one of Britain’s best-known high street retailers was not viable.

Sky News has learnt that FRP Advisory, which has been overseeing the collapsed business since January, is to begin formally sounding out potential buyers in the coming weeks.

The move raises the prospect of new owners taking control of The Body Shop, which was founded nearly half a century ago.

The UK's mega rich are dwindling - in a sign Britain's "billionaire boom has come to an end", according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List.

Published today, the list reveals the largest fall in billionaires in the guide's history - from a peak of 177 in 2022 to 165 this year.

"Many of our home-grown entrepreneurs have seen their fortunes fall and some of the global super rich who came here are moving away."

Top of the list is British-Indian businessman Gopi Hinduja and his family, whose wealth of £37.2bn is the largest fortune in the ranking's history.

But other familiar names in the list saw their riches fall, with Sir Richard Branson's total dropping by £2.4bn, which is back to his 2000 level.

Last year's top climber Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who bought a stake in Manchester United this year, fell two positions with a decline of £6.1bn.

Euan Blair, Tony Blair's eldest son, made the list for the first time, as did Sir Lewis Hamilton.

It comes as the UK continues to deal with a cost-of-living crisis, with new figures this week revealing a record 3.1 million food bank parcels were distributed over the course of a year.

The top 10:

  • Gopi Hinduja - £37.2bn
  • Sir Leonard Blavtanik - £29.2bn
  • David and Simon Reuben and family - £24.9bn
  • Sir Jim Ratcliffe - £23.5bn
  • Sir James Dyson and family - £20.8bn
  • Barnaby and Merlin Swire and family - £17.2bn
  • Idan Ofer - £14.9bn
  • Lakshmi Mittal and family - £14.9bn
  • Guy, George, Alannah and Galen Weston and family - £14.4bn
  • John Fredriksen and family - £12.8bn

A group of social media influencers have been charged in relation to promoting an unauthorised investment scheme.

The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) original cast member Lauren Goodger, 37, former Love Island star Biggs Chris, 32, and Celebrity Big Brother winner Scott Timlin, 36, also known as Scotty T, are among seven TV personalities alleged to have been paid to promote the scheme to their combined 4.5 million Instagram followers.

The others charged by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) include former Love Islanders Rebecca Gormley, 26, Jamie Clayton, 32, and Eva Zapico, 25 and TOWIE member Yazmin Oukhellou, 30.

The UK's financial watchdog brought the charges in a crackdown on "finfluencers" who use their online platforms to offer advice and information on various financial topics.

It alleges that between 19 May 2018 and 13 April 2021 Emmanuel Nwanze, 30, and Holly Thompson, 33, used an Instagram account to provide advice on buying and selling investments known as contracts for difference (CFDs) when they were not authorised to do so.

The watchdog said CFDs were high-risk investments used to bet on the price of an asset, in this case the price of foreign currencies.

It previously warned that 80% of customers lost money when investing in CDFs.

Mr Nwanze has been charged with running the scheme. He faces one count of breaching the general prohibition of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, and one count of unauthorised communications of financial promotions.

Ms Thompson, Mr Chris, Mr Clayton, Ms Goodger, Ms Gormley, Ms Oukhellou, Mr Timlin and Ms Zapico each face one count of unauthorised communications of financial promotions.

All nine will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on 13 June.

The FCA asked anyone who believed they had sustained a loss due to the scheme to contact its consumer contact centre.

A hotel part-owned by Gary Neville and other ex-Manchester United legends has been named one of the best places to work in hospitality.

Each year, The Caterer releases its top 30 best places for employees in the sector, with the top six featuring some familiar names.

The list is compiled via anonymous employee survey - with no input from managers or owners.

Hotel Football, the only hotel with a rooftop five-a-side pitch, was among the top six venues selected by employees across the UK.

The hotel's benefits package was particularly well-praised by those who work there - given that it "prioritises the financial wellbeing of employees during the cost of living challenge".

Management at the hotel, which is situated next to Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium, was also praised for enhanced maternity, paternity, parental and adoption leave policies and a strong belief in diversity and inclusion.

The other five to make up the top six are The Biltmore in Mayfair, Cycas Hospitality (which has 18 locations across the UK), Dalata (which boasts some 1,000 employees), Gleneagles Hotel in Edinburgh and Nobu Hotel in Shoreditch, London.

The energy price cap is set to fall by about 7% in July, a leading thinktank has said.

Cornwall Insights said: "For a typical dual fuel household, we predict the July price cap to be £1,574 per annum" - a drop from £1,690.

Looking further ahead, it forecasted the cap to rise again slightly in October, before falling again in January next year.

Reacting to the news, Uswitch said the predicted drop was "clearly good news".

"The future still remains uncertain, and with the price cap changing every three months – currently expected to rise in October before falling slightly in January –  it's crucial not to be complacent," Richard Neudegg, director of regulation, said.

However, "a predicted 7% drop in energy prices in July is clearly good news, with the price cap looking likely to hit its lowest level in over two years", he said.

He also urged  households who want to lock in rates for price certainty to run a comparison to see what energy tariffs are available to them.

"There are many 12-month fixed tariffs available at rates cheaper than the current price cap, and even some that are 2% below these new predicted July rates," he said.

Not durable- color wears off easily.

These are comfortable and waterproof, but they crease easily, and the color started to wear off the back of the shoe after wearing them only a few times. I already have several small spots where white spots are showing through. I don't think these shoes are built to last. ...
