Bandipur National Park is regarded as one of the most beautiful and better-managed national parks of India. Located amidst the picturesque surroundings of the towering Western Ghats on the Mysore-Ooty highway in Karnataka, it is an important part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that constitutes Karnataka’s Rajiv Gandhi National Park ( Nagarahole ) to its Northwest, Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary to its South, and Kerala’s Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary to its Southwest. The total extent of Bandipur National Park is 872.24 sq km. It is located partly in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar District and partly in H.D.Kote and Nanjangud taluks of Mysuru District.

Once the private hunting grounds of the erstwhile Maharajas, and nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur has had a long tryst with tigers. One of the thirty reserves identified across the country to save the tiger and its habitat, it’s also one of the last refuges of the endangered Asiatic wild elephant. Apart from the two famed residents, a number of other endangered species such as sloth bears, gaurs, Indian rock pythons, jackals, muggers, and four-horned antelopes can be spotted in this national park. Bandipur also shelters sambar, mouse deer, chital, sloth bear, and the rare flying lizard. Over 200 species of birds and a diversity of flora add to its attraction. Bandipur also supports a wide range of timber trees including teak, rosewood, sandalwood, Indian-laurel, Indian Kino tree, giant clumping bamboo, etc.

Bandipur Forest Safari:

Jungle Lodges and Resorts alone is now licensed to operate jeep safaris. Mini-bus safaris operated by the Forest Department begin from the range office. The bus safari is conducted between 6:15 am-9 am and 2:15 pm-5 pm. The fee is 350 INR per person. The jeep safari costs 3000 INR pax and is conducted between 6:15am-8am, 8am-9:45am, 2:30pm-4:30pm and 4:30pm-6:30pm. Trekking is now permitted in Bandipur. Elephant safaris have been discontinued.

We did not visit 3 of the places on the trip due to the driver not having our itinerary?? (Who knows if that is true) this is not a guided tour as stated. You pick up a local guide at each of the 2 main places. There are no snacks. No water. The seat belts in our vehicle needed fixing before they could be used. • Sandeep S 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Beware! Not as described. However Coorg is beautiful!!! The advertised description doesn’t match the actual experience. In reality what I got was a car and a driver with limited knowledge of Hindi and no ability in English. There was no guide or any of the other items in the “included items”. Your booking gets outsourced to another company, who in turn book an driver. Thus you are paying for two sets of commissions and can get a car & driver for half the cost (~4500 Indian Rupees). On the plus note, the Buddhist golden temple and the coffee plantation tour is a must see. Read more Written 13 January 2023
  • ankurc07 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles It’s a scam No one called me before the tour to confirm anything or share any details. When I called no one picked up the phone number given in the booking receipt. Anyway I went to the meeting point mentioned in the booking receipt at the given time. The guide did not turn up. Somehow I managed to get in touch with them then the guide refused to come to the location mentioned in the booking receipt and wanted me to come somewhere else. By this time I had lost trust in them. So I told them I wanted a refund as there was a no-show from their side at the given time and location. After this they stopped picking my calls. As a tourist, it was a very jarring experience and I ended up wasting an evening because of this. And I still haven’t got any refund. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. Read more Written 10 September 2022

Biligirirangan Hills

BR Hills

Also known as BR Hills, Biligirirangan is a hill range that forms the south-eastern border of Karnataka. The place is known for Biligiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary or simply BRT Wildlife Sanctuary that is said to be situated on the confluence of the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. Thus it is evident that the sanctuary is home to a unique eco-system. The BR hills links the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats, which eventually allows animals to move between the two ghats and even facilitates the gene flow between populations of species in these areas. Thus, this sanctuary can be reckoned to serve as an important biological bridge for the biota of the entire Deccan plateau.

Another highlight of the place is Biligiri Rangaswamy temple, which is situated at the edge of a bare cliff overlooking the northern parts of the sanctuary. It is the only temple in India, where the only standing form of God Ranganatha can be witnessed. Other deities in the temple include Ranganayaki and Alvars. An annual car festival is held in the month of April here when a large number of people are seen thronging the temple. Every two years, the local Soliga tribe present a large pair of slippers measuring 1-foot and 9 inches to the presiding deity Ranganatha.
