What is a Short Queen RV Mattress?

Before we get started, it’s important to first define what a short RV queen mattress is so that everyone is on the same page.

A short RV queen mattress is specifically designed to fit the limited interior space of an RV. While standard queen mattresses are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, short RV queen mattresses are usually either 59 or 60 inches wide and either 74 or 75 inches long.

Making short RV queen mattresses between 5 and 6 inches shorter compared to a standard queen.

This makes them the ideal choice for an RV bed in motorhomes and travel trailers, due to their shorter length.

How to Choose a Short RV Queen Mattress

Short RV Queen Mattress

A good-quality RV mattress is a great way to get a good night’s sleep while on the road and camping.

However, with so many different mattresses on the market, it can be tough to know which one is right for you.

So to make things a little easier, here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a new RV mattress.

When shopping for a new RV mattress, it’s important to keep in mind that price can vary quite a bit from one mattress to the next, with quality RV mattresses usually ranging from $150 to $600.

With more expensive versions offering higher-end features, such as cooling technology, charcoal-infused foam, and multi-layer construction.

While it might be tempting, it’s best to steer clear of extremely cheap RV mattresses that are less than $150, as they typically don’t offer much support or comfort and usually aren’t much better than the mattress that came with the RV.

Size is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing an RV mattress because it doesn’t matter how comfortable it is if it doesn’t fit.

So before you start shopping for an RV mattress, make sure to measure the space you have to work with.

Which will typically be 60 inches wide by 74 or 75 inches long, if your RV has an RV queen-size bed.

However, it’s always important to measure to make sure, as the size of an RV bed can vary slightly from one RV manufacturer to the next.

The three main firmness levels of an RV mattress are plush, medium, and firm, however, there are also many different sub-categories of firmness as well, such as medium-firm and medium-plush.

When it comes to an RV mattress’s firmness though, it’s really just a matter of personal preference and what type of sleeper you are.

Most people, however, tend to prefer medium to firm mattresses, as they offer a good balance of support and comfort for all types of sleepers.

Construction Type & Materials

The construction of an RV mattress can vary quite a bit from one model to the next.

However, there are really only three main types of construction used for RV mattresses including foam, innerspring, and hybrid construction, which is a combination of both foam and innerspring construction.

Most RV mattresses usually include at least some foam though, which can either be memory foam, latex foam, or polyurethane foam.

While there are benefits to each type of foam, memory foam is usually the best choice for an RV mattress, as it’s very comfortable and offers good support.

Warranty & Trial Periods

Well-made quality RV mattresses will usually come with some sort of warranty, typically lasting between 5 and 10 years.

While a longer warranty is always better, it’s also important to make sure that the warranty is backed by the manufacturer and not just the retailer. It’s also important to read the fine print carefully.

As many mattress warranties are limited warranties, which have clauses in the warranty that allow the company to deny the claim if they deem the problem to be an issue of customer abuse.

It’s also worth pointing out that some companies offer a trial period that will let you try the mattress for a certain amount of time, usually 30 days.

And will provide a money-back guarantee if you’re not completely satisfied with the mattress.

RV Mattress Upgrades

While not a necessity, there are some upgrades that can make an RV mattress even more comfortable as well as enjoyable to sleep on, which we’ve listed below.

  • Cooling Technology
  • Charcoal-Infused Foam
  • Edge Support
  • Hypoallergenic Material
  • Removable Mattress Cover
  • Multi-Layer Construction
  • CertiPUR US Certified Foam

An RV short queen mattress is typically either 59 or 60 inches wide by 74 or 75 inches long.

A standard queen mattress will typically not fit in an RV without modifications, as most queen mattresses in RVs are actually RV-short queens, which are anywhere from 5 to 6 inches shorter compared to a standard queen.

Most RV queen mattresses use 60×75 inch sheets, though it’s always important to measure your mattress before purchasing to make sure.

When it comes to finding the best RV short queen mattress, there are a lot of things to consider, such as price, size, firmness, and construction.

Hopefully, though, you were able to find the perfect RV mattress for your specific needs, by reading our best RV short queen mattress guide.

Happy sleeping and happy traveling!

Best RV Mattresses of 2024

Adventurers sleeping on the go once had to resort to pitching tents, dragging trailers, or scouting out hotels, but millions of Americans now own RVs, their own moveable homes away from home. Because you need to sleep on the go, we made this list of the best RV mattresses so you can enjoy a luxurious sleep from the comfort of your home on wheels – no need for off-roading to find a place to spend the night.

While most RVs come with a mattress, they can be swapped out for others that better meet your sleeping and traveling needs. In choosing the best RV mattresses for our list, we considered budget, pressure relief, motion isolation (essential for bumpy nights on the road), weight and how easily the mattress can be moved/stored away during the day, and RV sizes, as many RV beds have shorter or narrower dimensions.

We chose the DreamFoam Essential as our best overall pick for an RV for its affordability and numerous size options.

Table of Contents

DreamFoam Essential  »

DreamFoam Essential

Highly customizable with 22 sizes, five height options, and five firmness levels

Stain- and liquid-resistant

Very affordable

May sleep hot

Foam layers may sink and develop surface indentations over time

The DreamFoam Essential mattress is made of multiple layers of foam, with 6-, 8-, and 10-inch-thick models consisting of a thicker layer of high-density foam topped with a thinner layer of cooling gel swirl memory foam and 12- and 14-inch models made of the same main two layers with the addition of a middle layer of transitional foam.

What makes the DreamFoam Essential so exceptional is its sheer degree of customization - with 22 different sizes, it can fit in just about any RV sleep space. And with a variety of different thicknesses, it can accommodate sleepers looking for a deeper plush experience and those in search of a lighter, thinner mattress that’s easier to stow away during the day.

The DreamFoam Essential boasts strong edge support – excellent for getting on and off of your bed in tight RV sleep spaces – as well as temperature control and contouring pressure relief, with mattresses ranging in firmness from medium-soft to firm and going up in softness as the thickness increases. While this allows for ultimate customization, height limits in some RVs could require sleepers who would prefer one of the thicker, softer models to instead opt for a thinner, firmer model.

Bear Original  »

Bear Mattress

Lightweight and easy to move

Made with materials tailored to muscle recovery

Infused memory foam and Tencel cover help with temperature regulation

Might not be supportive enough for some side sleepers

Doesn’t come in short or RV specific sizes, so might not fit all RV bed spaces

The Bear Original mattress is made of three layers of foam, with high-density support foam on the bottom for durability, foam in the middle for support and pressure relief, cooling gel memory foam on top, and a breathable Tencel cover with an optional add-on Celliant infused cover. Textile expert Deborah Young describes eucalyptus-derived Tencel as “incredibly soft and absorbent” though not as fast to wick away sweat as polyester.

Our testers found that, without the Celliant addition, the Bear Original mattress tends toward temperature-neutral rather than explicitly cooling. So for those camping out in a hot RV in the summer, it might be worth considering the add-on Celliant cover for additional cooling. Anyone who lives an active lifestyle traveling in an RV is likely to appreciate that the Bear Original mattress materials are designed for muscle recovery, and though the mattress doesn’t come with grips, our testers found it lightweight and easy to move, which is ideal for anyone looking to stow their mattress away during the day for more space in their RV.

Helix Midnight  »

Queen-size Helix Midnight Mattress on bed frame next to Helix shipping box

The Midnight Mattress is a hybrid mattress recommended for back, side, and combination sleepers.

Good motion isolation

Medium-soft firmness is good for back and side sleepers

Hybrid design

No handles or grips

Fairly heavy and difficult to move around

Doesn’t come in RV-specific sizes

Helix recently added short queen and RV king sizes to its lineup of Core and Luxe mattresses on top of standard mattress sizes. As mentioned, some RVs can fit standard mattress sizes, but buying from a company that offers RV-specific sizes can eliminates the guesswork.

The Helix Midnight is a hybrid, five-layer mattress with a dense foam base for support, a layer of up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils to cradle the body and reduce motion transfer, a transitional foam layer, a medium foam layer, and a cushioning memory foam layer, all topped with a cooling cover. The slightly softer-than-medium firmness of the Helix Midnight is ideal for adventurers who need a good night’s sleep. Dr. Christopher Gharibo , a board-certified doctor, professor, and pain management specialist through the NYU Langone Health System, recommends a softer-but-not-too-soft mattress, as “you want a mattress that’s going to give appropriately as you shift positions and adjust itself to the contours of your body without too much resistance.”

Our testers rated the Helix Midnight a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5 for motion isolation, which is important for couples with a restless partner, and also found it easier to switch positions on than the Bear Original mattress. Even so, ease of movement was aided by the individually wrapped springs, still making this an ideal option for anyone disturbed by bumpy roads or a restless bedfellow.

SleepDog BigDawg  »

SleepDog BigDawg

Double-sided with medium-soft side and firm side

Contouring gel memory foam

Lightweight and built for RVs with compact sizing

Thinner mattress might be too firm for some sleepers

Return policy includes the right not to sell a mattress to customers who have returned one

The SleepDog BigDawg mattress is a double-sided memory foam mattress with 5 inches of high-density support memory foam, 2 inches of gel memory foam, and a 2-inch quilted foam mattress cover. The quilted side offers a medium-soft feel, and the high-density foam side offers a firm feel. Weighing in at just 59 pounds for a traditional queen-size mattress, the SleepDog BigDawg mattress is a great option for those who want to travel light. At 9 inches thick, the BigDawg is one of the thinnest mattresses on our list.

While some sleepers might find it too firm, it’s designed to make the most of its slim profile. Designed with RVs in mind, not only is the SleepDog BigDawg one of the lightest and most portable mattresses on our list, but it also comes in a variety of custom sizes designed to fit RVs and semitrucks, including RV queen, RV king, and four other custom sizes.

Brooklyn Aurora Luxe  »

Queen-size Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid Mattress on a bed frame in a bedroom

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid Mattress

Our testers found it equally supportive and comfortable in the back, side, and stomach sleeping positions

Responsive surface is infused with cooling technology throughout and cool to the touch

Difficult to move

Off-gassing odor is noticeable

The Brooklyn Aurora Luxe is a 13.5-inch, six-layer hybrid mattress with thin base foam for durability, a zoned 8-inch encased coil core for motion isolation and edge support, a 1-inch gel swirl memory foam layer for cooling, a 2-inch response comfort foam, 1.5 inches of antimicrobial foam with an infusion of phase-change material (PCM), and a cooling cover.

Our testers found this medium-firm mattress to be equally supportive in the back, stomach, and side sleeping positions, and with three firmness levels to choose from, the Aurora Luxe is ideal for side sleepers, who can opt for the plushier feel of the soft mattress to help with hip cradling and spinal alignment. On the road, adventurers don’t have time to toss and turn in the heat of the night and won’t have to with the layer of foam infused with PCM, which textile expert Deborah Young describes as “textile magic” for its ability to cool you when you’re warm and warm you when you’re cool. It’s worth noting that a 201-pound tester of ours did find that the cooling properties faded over time but agreed the Aurora Luxe is cool to the touch.

The Bottom Line

In researching the best RV mattresses, the biggest takeaway was definitely that when it comes to comfort and convenience, you need to go into your purchase knowing what’s most important to you as a sleeper and traveler. However, one big consideration is the weight of the mattress – too heavy and you’re practically adding an extra person to your vehicle.

Things To Consider When Buying RV Mattresses

Size: When choosing a mattress for your RV bed, it’s important to take careful measurements so you know what size mattress will fit. Many RV beds are short and narrow compared to more traditional frames and may require RV-sized mattresses. Even if your RV bed is a nontraditional size, however, that doesn’t mean you have to settle for the thin factory mattress that comes with it.

Support: A supportive mattress is always important, and in choosing the RV mattress that’s right for you, you should consider whether you are usually a back, side, stomach, or combination sleeper and therefore how much and what sort of support you need for a comfortable night’s sleep. When choosing a mattress, you should also look for the firmness level. Choosing the right firmness is particularly important for side sleepers who, according to Dr. Gharibo, especially need soft and supportive mattresses “because it’s a very contoured side of the body as opposed to sleeping purely on your back or your belly, where there are much fewer pressure points on the body.”

Weight: When picking out an RV mattress, you should consider how heavy the mattress is, particularly if you’re looking to stow your mattress away during the day to conserve space for your travels. It’s also important to check the weight capacity of your RV’s bed frame, as it may not be able to handle the weight of all mattresses even if it can technically fit them.

How We Chose the Best RV Mattresses

To compile this list of the best RV mattresses, our editors and contributors at U.S. News 360 Reviews contacted multiple experts, including NYU-associated doctor and professor Dr. Christopher Gharibo and textile expert, educator, and author Deborah Young . Careful research and in-house testing helped us narrow down our list, considering qualities specifically important to life on the road like durability, size, customization options, weight, cooling properties, support, motion isolation, and responsiveness. (The takeaway? You don’t have to sacrifice comfort for convenience, but measure your RV bed carefully and check online dimensions to be sure that the mattress you choose will fit in the space you have and not exceed its weight requirements). Overall, though, we found that you don’t need to sacrifice comfort at night to live an adventurous life on the road.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

Here at 360 Reviews, our editors and contributors have abundant experience testing, reviewing, researching, and compiling buyer’s guides of the best products. Sheli Paige Frank , the author of this piece, is a scripted TV writer, researcher, and New York Times-published journalist who has written multiple articles for U.S. News & World Report about the best mattresses for a variety of needs. A proud adventurer who has slept in many beds on the go, Sheli knows how important it is to have the right mattress for your best night’s sleep so you can make the most of all that traveling has to offer.

Measure, measure, measure! There’s no guaranteed standard size for RV mattresses, so to pick the right mattress for your RV, you need to measure your RV bed – and any factory mattress that came with it – and check its weight capacity. Once you’ve done that, you should look online to check the dimensions of the mattresses you’re considering to see whether a standard, short, RV-specific, or other custom size will best fit your RV bed space.

Many RV beds are often thin and uncomfortable, so you likely will want to replace yours with a “regular mattress” designed to fit an RV frame. Some RV bed frames can accommodate a standard-sized mattress, but most are smaller, as RVs are compact living spaces. Many mattresses come in RV-specific sizing, and if you have an RV bed frame that’s on the smaller side, you should look for “short” or “RV” in the name of the size to see if it’s built with an RV in mind.

Depending on the size of your RV bed frame and its weight capacity, you may be able to use a standard-sized mattress in your RV. Mattress sizes vary depending on the manufacturer so a “standard” king or queen isn’t always the same size, and the same is true for RV or short mattresses. Check the website for the dimensions of any mattress you’re considering, and measure your bed space to see if you need a regular or RV-sized mattress from the brand.

How Do I Pick the Right RV Mattress?

Most people spend a good amount of time researching before buying a mattress for their bedroom. It makes sense—you're about to spend every night on it! But isn't vacay sleep just as important? Make the right choice for your RV by considering the following:

  • What size do you need?
  • Do you have any sizing limitations in your RV, such as a bunk bed style or a cut corner?
  • What types of mattresses do you like?
  • What “extras” do you like—cooling features, pillowtop, etc.?
  • Is there a trial period, in case the mattress doesn't fit your comfort needs?
  • Is there a solid warranty, for peace of mind?

What Size Mattress Protector Do I Need for My RV Mattress?

Great question! Although you can find RV-specific bedding, you can easily adapt our cooling mattress protector to the GhostBed RV. With our signature 2” elastic band around it, it'll stay in place perfectly.

What Size Bedding Do I Need for My RV Mattress?

We recommend getting the regular sheet size that corresponds to your mattress; our luxury cooling bed sheets have a 2” elastic band around the fitted sheet edges to keep them in place, so even though the short queen mattress is a tad bit shorter, they'll still fit perfectly. Simply tuck the top sheet in, and you're all set.

Does the GhostBed RV ${ design } Mattress Smell?

How Long Can I Keep My Mattress Packaged in the Box?

After delivery, you can keep the mattress in the box for up to 6 months. We recommend opening your mattress before then to ensure the best results when expanding it to its proper shape and size.

Is It Ok to Keep the Mattress in My RV Through the Winter or Cold Temperatures?

Yes! We use premium memory foam that's designed to withstand temperature fluctuations without losing quality or performance. Keep in mind that memory foam is temperature‐sensitive, however, so it'll feel a lot firmer if it's very cold. Warmer temperatures will soften it up to its intended feel.

This bed is so comfortable! I am so impressed!! My daughter is absolutely obsessed and is trying to steel the bed from me! Her exact words “the most comfortable bed ever!” Customer service is amazing too!!

Thanks Lindsay for the awesome review! So thrilled to hear your new GhostBed RV is an absolute dream and you are loving that cloud-like comfort. And even better that your daughter is obsessed too - looks like you may need to order another for her room! We truly appreciate you choosing GhostBed - Marc

I bought this RV King Short Ghostbed in the med/firm hybrid and have thoroughly been impressed.

We both sleep comfortably and wake up rested. Our previous mattress made us so sore and we tossed all night long because of it. Our bed is in the slide and have to curl this mattress back up with tie downs for travel. It’s held up nicely. I’ve gotten used to the weight as it’s a bit hefty but in my mid 50’s, I can manage it on my own. I don’t regret this purchase at all.

Thanks Angel for the review! So happy to hear you are loving your RV Mattress and enjoying this one much better! Thanks for ordering and happy travels - Marc

Haven't had a chance to use our new RV Hybrid GhostBed mattress yet, but we have a adjustable split king GhostBed mattress that my husband and I absolutely love! I'm sure we'll have great rest with the RV Hybrid

Awesome photo! Thanks for sharing Linda. So happy to hear you are enjoying your GhostBed RV Mattress and your Split King has been fabulous too. Happy Travels - Marc

My wife and I are enjoying the bed. Sleep much better

Thanks Angelo for the review! So happy to hear you both are enjoying your new RV Mattress and sleeping much better. Happy Travels - Marc

We love this mattress. We replaced the stock mattress in our RV with the ghost bed hybrid mattress and it’s amazing. We just spent 10 days sleeping on it and it exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect level of firmness for my husband and me.

Thanks Lauren for the fantastic review! We're thrilled to hear that you and your husband have been so impressed with your GhostBed Hybrid mattress that it exceeded your expectations during your 10-day RV trip. Our mattresses are designed using premium materials to deliver outstanding comfort, support, and pressure relief, even in unique sleep environments like RVs. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and that it was the perfect firmness level for both of you! - Marc

When you live in an RV, you are generally concerned about saving space and weight. Unless you are extremely tall, RV short queen mattresses are a great choice to get some extra room in your RV bedroom.

Comfort is also a concern. If your RV is your home away from home, you want to make sure sleeping on a bad mattress isn’t an issue. When you purchase a new RV, the mattress it comes with should be replaced. If you purchase a used RV, it’s also best to replace it.

Read on to learn some facts about RV short queen mattresses, and then check out our picks for some of the best you can buy.

5. Trial Period or Warranty

9. lucid 5” firm gel memory foam short queen mattress, 7. can you fit a full queen size mattress in your rv, 7. make sure your mattress is supported correctly, are factory rv mattresses comfortable.

RV manufacturers go to great lengths to make their products as comfortable as possible. However, RV mattresses are the exception. Most RV mattresses are not known to be comfortable.

Since RVs were traditionally used for short periods of time when people were vacationing, RV mattresses were designed for comfort over a short period of time. However, with more people living full-time in their RVs there is a need for mattresses that are comfortable and more like standard residential mattresses.

If your RV mattress is not comfortable, you may want to consider upgrading your mattress. Remember that RV mattresses are not always the same size as residential, so make sure that your new, more comfortable mattress will fit in your RV.

What Are RV Short Queen Mattresses?

What Is an RV Short Queen Mattress

RV short queen mattresses are just as the name sounds. It’s the same as a residential queen mattress, just a little shorter. Both the RV short queen and the residential queen are 60 inches wide.

The short queen mattress is shorter than the other by about 5 inches, making it 60 X 75. If you choose an RV with a short queen mattress, know that it also weighs less than a residential queen and allows for more walking space.

What to Look for in RV Short Queen Mattresses

There are several factors to look for in RV short queen mattresses, but the most important one is how comfortable you are when sleeping. It doesn’t matter how pretty, heavy, or the mattress dimensions. If you’re not comfortable you won’t like how it sleeps.

You need to purchase a quality brand that’ll stand up to continual use, particularly if you full-time RV. You’ll be sleeping on it every night. Make sure it’s supportive and comfortable to give you a good night’s rest. It must also have the correct measurements to fit in your space.

You also don’t want to carry more weight than necessary, and you need to have a mattress with some give to fit into your RV and the bedroom.

Is A King Size RV Mattress The Same Size As A Regular King?

Most RV king-size mattresses are not the same size as residential king-size mattresses. In fact, this is the case with most sizes of RV mattresses. The reason for this difference in size is to accommodate the constraints of the small spaces of RVs.

Residential king-size mattresses usually measure 76” by 80”. King-size mattresses for RVs will be close to this size, but they will typically be smaller than the 76” by 80”. RV king-size mattresses are typically narrower than residential options.

They usually are the same length, but this can also vary depending on the size of your RV and the way the space is arranged.

The 5 Factors To Find The Right Size Bed for Your Space

The Right Size for Your Space

You need to have measurements in hand to ensure your RV short queen mattress fits into your space. You don’t want to pick a great mattress and then find you can’t get it into your RV’s door or the bedroom.

1. Thickness

The thickness of the mattress is only a consideration if you have a Murphy bed or the mattress is part of a slide-out. Those mattresses can only be five or six inches thick. Make sure you consider thickness before you purchase.

2. Firmness

Firmness is important for your own preference. We tend to like a softer bed. Other people like their beds firmer. You’ll want to head to a mattress store and check out some of the different options, even if you order something such as a bed in a box shipped to your door.

3. How You Sleep

The Right Size for Your Space How You Sleep

Your preferred sleeping position can affect the type of mattress you purchase. For instance, if you sleep on your back, you’ll probably want a firmer foam or hybrid mattress. A soft mattress won’t provide enough support to keep your spine properly aligned as you sleep.

Side sleeping puts pressure on your shoulders and your hips, so a softer mattress will cushion your body and help relieve pressure at these key points. Memory foam or pillow-top mattresses allow for comfort and support.

Stomach sleepers should have a mattress that supports the spine. If the mattress is soft enough to sink into, you probably want to find something like a firm hybrid or foam mattress.

Combination sleepers who change positions throughout the night will find that a medium-firm mattress will allow you to get comfortable in any position. Consider latex as well as a hybrid that responds well to movement.

4. Quality of Materials

The Right Size for Your Space Quality of Materials

Purchasing a mattress with high-quality materials is important, particularly when you want a bed to last for several years. High-quality mattresses also can come with a high price tag. Luxury mattresses come at an even higher price. You’ll pay more for high-quality construction materials or natural organic fibers.

You can find good quality mattresses that don’t skimp on materials. The goal is to find a good mattress that’ll last anywhere from 5-10 years.

Most mattresses do come with a trial period and warranty. Trial periods are usually 100 days. You’ll want to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 days to ensure it’s right for you.

Most mattresses come with a warranty. A 10-year warranty is pretty standard, but you want to make sure you know what that warranty covers or doesn’t cover before you make your purchase. Some warranties will specify things such as the wrong kind of frame or leaving the mattress on the floor could void it.

Most brands also cover the cost of your return, but you may be charged a processing or restocking fee. If you don’t like the mattress and are within the trial period, check to see if you need to arrange for disposal or pickup.

The company can’t resell the mattress. A few companies will just ask that you donate the mattress. It’s also a good idea to check the reviews for customers reporting difficulties with returns.

How Much Are RV Mattresses?

If you are upgrading your RV mattress you will find that the range of prices is wide. The price of RV mattresses changes depending on a number of different factors. These include things like material, quality, brand, and size. Here is a breakdown of the different types of RV mattresses as well as how they vary in cost.

  • Basic Foam – These are the mattresses that normally come with your RV. They tend to be the most affordable, but they typically are not made with good-quality materials. There are exceptions to this but overall these are not as comfortable as other options. Basic foam mattresses will run from $100 to $500.
  • Memory Foam: These mid-range mattresses in both price and quality, will offer you a more comfortable option than basic foam. Memory foam mattresses tend to provide more support and are a good choice if you have back or joint problems. Memory foam mattresses range in price from $200 to $1000.
  • Innerspring: These are the same type of mattresses that you will typically purchase for your residential bedroom. The challenge with innerspring mattresses and your RV is that innerspring mattresses tend to come in specific sizes, so they may not fit well in your RV. There are some RV-specific innerspring mattress brands that you can purchase, but they will tend to be more expensive. Innerspring mattresses will range in price between $300 and $1,500.
  • Latex: Latex mattresses are a great option and are both durable and comfortable. They are a good option for RVs, but they also tend to be more expensive. The price of latex mattresses depends highly on the size and quality of the materials. Latex mattresses range in price between $500 and $2,000.

You may also want to consider a custom or specialty mattress. There are times when you may need to have a custom mattress made. This may be necessary if you have odd-sized or shaped beds in your RV a custom mattress may be your best option. The cost of custom mattresses will depend on size and material.

The mattress’s top layer contains ventilated memory foam infused with cooling gel, capturing and dissipating heat to help regulate body temperature.

The short queen is 5 inches thick and costs around $200.

7 FAQs About the Best RV Short Queen Mattresses

1. where is the best place to buy an rv short queen mattress.

FAQs About the Best RV Short Queen Mattress Where Is the Best Place to Buy an RV Short Queen Mattress

If you are traveling in your RV, the best place to purchase your short queen mattress is probably going to be online through the mattress manufacturer’s website. Also, if you want a custom-made mattress this is the best way to purchase it.

Online sellers, such as Amazon, Wayfair, and Overstock.com, also carry many of the brands we have listed. Even places such as Home Depot sell mattresses. Don’t forget to compare prices at all these sites, including shipping or delivery costs, to get the best deal.

2. How Thick Should an RV Mattress Be?

Slide-out beds in an RV require a mattress to be 5-6 inches deep to fit. Murphy beds fall into the same depth parameters. If you have a regular RV bed, you can have a mattress that is as thick as you like.

3. Are RV Queen and Short Queen Mattresses the Same?

Are RV Queen and Short Queen Mattresses the Same

Yes, an RV queen and a short queen mattress are the same. Both are 5 inches shorter than a regular queen mattress but are still 60 inches wide. These mattresses are popular with RVers because they save space and are somewhat lighter than a standard queen. Short queen mattresses are 60 X 75 inches.

4. Will Regular Queen Sheets Fit a Short Queen Mattress?

Because a short queen is about 5 inches shorter than a regular queen mattress, you’ll have more sheets than a mattress. You can make this work by tucking extra material in. It’s not a great option, but it’ll work until you are ready to purchase new sheets.

5. Will Full-Size Sheets Fit a Short Queen Mattress?

A full-size mattress is 54 X 75 inches, so full-size sheets will not fit the width of your short queen mattress.

6. Does Sleep Number Make an RV Short Queen Mattress?

Does Sleep Number Make an RV Short Queen Mattress

Yes, Sleep Number does make a mattress that’ll be a short queen mattress for an RV. Consider the Sleep Number R5 or R3. You also need to consider the weight of a Sleep Number mattress which may be heavier than a standard mattress.

A full queen-size mattress can fit in many RVs. Consider a few things, such as the space you’ll need to bring the mattress in the door and the space in your bedroom. Make sure the mattress has some flexibility to fit around any corners. Be sure to measure before you purchase.

You can also purchase a bed-in-a-box which is made to fit in an RV. You just open the packaging in the bedroom and allow the mattress to expand. These mattresses should be flexible enough to remove once you no longer want them.

Of course, you want to measure your RV’s bed frame and the walkway space around the bed. If a residential queen mattress decreases walkway space, only you can decide if it’s worth the sacrifice.

7 Ways to Care for My Short Queen Mattress?

You can do several tasks to keep your RV short queen mattress fresh and like-new for years to come.

1. Use a Mattress Protector

How Do I Care for My Short Queen Mattress

A mattress protector will keep any accidents or spills off your mattress. It should fit tight to your mattress, so it doesn’t move underneath the sheets.

2. Vacuum Your Mattress

If you vacuum your mattress at least twice a year, you can prevent a build-up of dust mites or allergens.

3. Deodorize Your Mattress

How Do I Care for My Short Queen Mattress Deodorize Your Mattress

Baking soda is a great way to freshen your mattress. Sprinkle the mattress with baking soda over the entire surface. You can use an entire one-pound box. Leave the baking soda there for 24 hours if possible. If you can, place the mattress near a window. The sunlight will add to the sanitizing process.

4. Rotate or Flip Your Mattress Regularly

Sleeping in the same spot will cause specific wear and tear to the mattress. Check with the manufacturer’s recommendations on whether to flip or rotate your mattress.

How Do I Care for My Short Queen Mattress Clean Stains Immediately

5. Clean Stains Immediately

You can spot clean with lemon juice and salt mixed to make a coarse paste. Gently rub it onto the stain and let it sit for 30-60 minutes, then wipe it off with a clean towel. Note that lemon will bleach and harm the color of a dark mattress. You can always do a test area first.

A combination of liquid dish soap, baking soda, and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide will also help to remove stains. Mix the ingredients with water in a spray bottle, then blot the stain away with a clean rag.

6. Avoid Eating in Bed

Ways to Care for My Short Queen Mattress Avoid Eating in Bed

Of course, even small crumbs can be left behind to entice critters into your bed.

A solid platform will ensure that your mattress wears evenly.

Final Thoughts on Choosing the Best RV Short Queen Mattress

When it comes to choosing your next and best RV short queen mattress, the ball is in your court. How you sleep, on your side, back, or stomach, personal preferences, and of course price all play a part in what mattress you might choose for your RV.

It’s probably best not to skimp on this purchase, although plenty of good brands won’t break the bank. Whatever you choose, consider your and your partner’s comfort, and choose wisely. Hopefully, these tips will go a long way toward getting the best short queen mattress for you and your family.

1 thought on “9 Best RV Short Queen Mattresses”

We bought a 6″ Nod by Tuft & Needle from Amazon. It’s $290. We really like it but I would have liked to check out some of the others in this article. Our RV takes a regular queen and a short queen isn’t listed for the Nod. It’s Greenguard Gold & CertiPUR-US certified and has good ratings.

Best RV Mattress for 2024

Don't sacrifice on good sleep while out on the road. Our sleep experts tested and selected the best mattresses for RVs -- here are our top picks.

Our Experts

travel trailer queen mattress

With 5+ years of mattress testing experience, we use our different sleeping position and body type perspectives to offer well-rounded, honest reviews.

What to consider

A firm mattress will offer more support while a soft mattress will be more pressure relieving. Medium mattresses fall in the sweet spot right in between. The right firmness level for you depends on your sleeping position.

Sleeping position

Side sleepers should consider a medium to soft mattress that cradles the hips and shoulders. Back and stomach sleepers should consider a medium to firm mattress that keeps the spine in a straight alignment. Switch between positions? A medium firmness level can accommodate all sleeping positions.

Coils and latex foam give a bed more bounce, while memory foam and poly foam make a bed feel more cushy and pressure relieving. The feel of your mattress will depend on the types of materials it has on the inside.

Construction

There are essentially two mattress types, hybrid and all-foam. Hybrid mattresses are constructed with steel coils and foam, but all-foam mattresses are just as their name implies.

Hybrid mattresses tend to be best for people who want extra support and durability. Sleepers over 230 pounds in particular should consider a hybrid over an all-foam mattress because it’s more supportive, durable and long-lasting.

Performance

Motion isolation, edge support and temperature are important features for couples or people who sleep hot to consider. Hot sleepers should consider a mattress that boasts special cooling features. Couples want minimal motion transfer and a strong, supportive bed perimeter.

Company policies

All online brands offer a free trial, free shipping and a warranty, but some brands are more generous with their policies than others.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress

Enjoying life on the road is much easier when you can enjoy a good night's sleep in the RV. If you’re consistently on the go, with your van or RV, then you’ll need the best RV mattress you can afford. With the best RV mattress for your space and your sleep style, you'll find it a little easier to catch some time off the road while making memories.

But remember, space can be tricky when trying to fit more things into an RV, so make sure to measure how much room you have before going through with your purchase.

What is the best overall mattress for RVs?

The best overall bed for RVs is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress , and it was a pretty simple choice. Our team of mattress experts loves the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress for its combination of near-universal comfort, hybrid design, firmness options and value price.

Not only is it a great hybrid bed, but it, along with many mattresses from Brooklyn Bedding, is easily available in non-standard sizes, which we don't typically see with other brands. Odds are that there will be a size available that works for your RV, including three RV king-size mattresses, short full and Olympic queen, among others.

I have actually recommended this mattress to people in my personal life, and it's always been a hit.

What to consider when buying an RV mattress

You should ask yourself a few questions when considering a new mattress for your RV, trailer or camper van. Finding something comfortable is priority No. 1 because even if you seldom sleep in your RV, you should still be comfortable.

Mattress size

Size is probably the most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for an RV mattress. Space is much more limited in a vehicle or trailer, and depending on the manufacturer, it might not accommodate standard sizes like queen or king.

Before buying anything, make sure you precisely measure your available space for a mattress and decide accordingly. If a standard mattress size doesn't fit, that would eliminate quite a few options.

The height of the mattress is also something to consider. If the mattress space in your RV is in a loft, for example, a thicker, taller mattress could make you feel cramped and uncomfortable, so choosing a thinner mattress would be better.

The durability of a mattress is something we strongly consider when recommending beds, which is why we often recommend coil beds. Durability is still an important factor for RV beds, but it will be less of a factor depending on how often you actually sleep in it.

If you live in an RV, trailer or camper full time or spend months at a time on the road, a less durable mattress isn't a great idea, but if you only sleep in it a few weeks out of the year, then you can probably afford to go with a super affordable foam mattress like the AmazonBasics.

How we tested the best mattresses for RVs

Our team of experts has a very extensive mattress testing process. You can read about it here .

For this particular list, we looked at a variety of factors and paid special attention to mattresses that are available in non-standard sizing specific to RVs.

Mattress feel

Probably the two most important things we test for are a mattress' firmness rating and feel. The feel of a mattress is dependent on its construction, especially the top layers, although we don't always agree with what the brand says their bed feels like.

Getting an idea of your preference for feel can be a little tough without trying a huge number of beds. If you're unsure of what feel you prefer, going with a mattress we describe as "neutral" is generally something most people like because it's unspecific.

Only a few brands we test have non-standard sizes or RV-specific sizes available, so the ones that do have priority for this particular list.

Brooklyn Bedding and their sub-brand, Dreamfoam, has many mattresses that come in RV king and RV bunk sizes and "Olympic queen" size, which is slightly wider than a standard queen (66 inches x inches" versus 60 inches x 80 inches), a "Short queen" size which is slightly shorter (60 inches x 74 inches) and "Short full" (48 inches x 74 inches versus 53 inches x 75 inches).

Other brands like PlushBeds have RV sizes (and possibly others we still need to test), but Brooklyn Bedding has the widest variety, which is why they are well represented on this list.

Other mattresses we've tested

For all of our best lists we have to make the cutoff somewhere, but here are a few picks that we considered but didn't quite make the cut but are also solid picks.

AmazonBasics Mattress : This is one of the most affordable beds we've ever tested, and it's solidly comfortable, especially for the price. Our concerns with this bed are primarily with durability as it uses "egg-crate" or "convoluted foam," which we don't often see and doesn't come with a traditional 10-year warranty.

I don't recommend the AmazonBasics mattress to folks intending to sleep on it every night (unless you just need the most affordable mattress available), but if you're going to be sleeping on it only occasionally, then I feel good about recommending it.

DreamFoam Doze : The Doze is more affordable than the DreamFoam Essential (depending on the thickness you select), and I find it a bit more comfortable, but that's subjective. It also comes in some RV-specific sizes, just not as many as the Essential. It's a great option at a very low price point, but we felt the Essential was a slightly better pick.

Plank Mattress : This mattress has a flippable design, and both sides are meant to be quite firm, so it's really only appropriate for back and stomach sleepers. If you're looking for an ultra-firm mattress for your RV, this has a handful of RV-specific sizes and an optional cooling cover

Best RV mattress FAQs

What is the best type of mattress for rvs.

No one type of mattress is best for RVs. It comes down to your personal preferences for firmness and feel to get optimal sleep in whatever RV you might have.

What size mattress should I get?

This will depend on the space you have available for a mattress inside your RV. It's possible it can fit standard mattress sizes, or it might require something more specialized. Make sure to measure your space before purchasing.

How do I clean a RV mattress?

Certain mattresses feature removable and machine-washable covers, but most of the time you have to spot-clean it if the cover gets dirty.

The quick list 1. Best overall 2. Best for side sleepers 3. Best memory foam 4. Best budget cooling 5. Best organic Queen size mattress info

If you're looking for the best queen size mattress you're with the majority of bed shoppers. It's the most popular mattress size of the lot, because it's just right for most people's needs: a queen size mattress is big enough for most couples, but it won't take up all the available space in your bedroom, which a king size mattress can.

This of course means, though, that there are a lot of options to choose from, even when you've trimmed things down to our picks of the best mattresses on the market. Saatva Classic mattress

1. Saatva Classic Mattress

Our expert review:

Specifications

✅ You want to invest in quality: With exceptional performance and high build quality, the Saatva Classic will provide comfortable sleep until it's time to replace your mattress . ✅ You want comfort tailored to you: A variety of height and softness options allows you to pick a finish to suit your sleep style.  ✅ You experience back pain: The Saatva Classic features spinal technology that's been approved by the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations.

❌ You want a budget bed: The Saatva Classic is a premium mattress. We do think the price is reflected in the performance, but if it's out of your budget, the Helix (#2) and Nectar (#3) offer affordable quality. ❌ You share a bed: While our testers were pleased with the motion isolation, it's not as good as you'll find on a model with higher proportions of memory foam – for example, the Helix Midnight (#2). ❌  You like to sink into your mattress: With minimal foam, the Saatva doesn't have much 'hug'. If you like to sink into your sleep surface, check out the Nectar Memory Foam (#3).

🔎  The Saatva Classic is an exceptional mattress offering strong all-round performance and a luxury feel, plus customization options to suit your sleep style. The price tag is high, but it's worth it. ★★★★½

We rate the Saatva Classic as the best hybrid mattress on the market. This luxury innerspring hybrid is Saatva's most popular model and with three firmness options to choose from as well as two heights, it's one you can buy in a configuration that'll suit your exact requirements.

Design and material A hybrid mattress, the Saatva Classic is constructed using both foam and innersprings. The base is formed of durable coils, with high-density foam rails around the edge to bolster the perimeter. This is topped with a layer of Lumbar Zone pocketed coils, which cradle the body and contour to your shape. Next, a high-density memory foam layer in just the central third, with added 'spinal wire', delivers targeted support for the lumba . Finally, a three-inch Euro pillow top with lumbar zone quilting gives plush support. Firmness and comfort Thanks to the combination of springs and a small amount of foam, the Saatva Classic has a buoyant sleep surface. You sit on top of the mattress, rather than sink in. But don't think it will feel like sleeping on a board – the plush pillow top adds luxurious softness.

Lumbar support is a particular highlight of the Saatva Classic and customers suffering with back ache regularly praise the mattress for helping to ease pain. The Lumbar Zone technology is approved by the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations, and we rate this one of the best mattresses for back pain on the market.

Saatva offers the Classic in a range of firmness levels, so you can customize the mattress to suit your sleep style. The most popular is Luxury Firm (rated 5.5 out of 10 on firmness), which suits most sleep styles and body types. Plush Soft (3) works best for side sleepers and those with a lighter build, while Firm (8) is excellent for heavier bodies and stomach or back sleepers.

Performance The Saatva Classic scored well in all our testing areas. We found it particularly good at temperature regulation, keeping sleepers cool throughout the night. The edge support is also fantastic, which is good news if you share with a partner (or like to starfish). Increased edge support means you can stretch all the way to the perimeter, without losing support.

The only (small) complaint with the Saatva Classic is motion control. Some reviewers have found the softer surface can move with your sleeping partner. If motion isolation is important to you, consider a Firm surface, or try the Helix (#2).

Value for money The Saatva Classic is almost never sold at full price, but even with the regular Saatva mattress sale , it sits in the premium price bracket. With free white glove delivery, a one-year trial period and a lifetime warranty, there’s not much to dislike about this mattress apart from the $99 charge to refund or exchange it.

Best queen size mattress for side sleepers

Helix Midnight mattress

2. Helix Midnight Mattress

✅ You sleep on your side: The Helix Midnight is our best mattress for side sleepers , as the softer surface helps the body stay aligned. ✅ You suffer from achy joints: The Helix Midnight provides outstanding pressure relief, cushioning the body so you wake up refreshed, not sore. ✅ Your partner tosses and turns: The combination of wrapped coils and memory foam stops motion from traveling across the mattress.

❌ You sleep on your front: The sink-in surface doesn't provide much support for stomach sleepers. The Avocado Green (#5) is would be a much better option. ❌ You like a bit of bounce: The Helix Midnight grabs, rather than pushes back. If you prefer a more responsive feel, try the Saatva Classic (#1). ❌  You have a heavier build: If you weigh over 250lbs, you might prefer a firmer mattress with greater support – the Helix range includes options for all firmness preferences and body types.

🔎  The softer memory foam surface of the Helix Midnight mattress hugs the body, offering gentle joint support for side sleepers. It also absorbs motion brilliantly, making this mattress a favorite for couples. ★★★★½

The slightly softer feel of the Helix Midnight mattress makes it our top pick of the best mattresses for side sleepers . Sleeping softer than others, it's ideal for side sleepers who need extra cushioning at pressure points on their shoulders and hips.

Design and materials The Helix Midnight mattress is a 12-inch hybrid with four support layers. At the base is a layer of durable DuraDense foam, followed by a layer of wrapped coils that reduce motion transfer and flex beneath the sleeper's body. Next, two layers of foam provide pressure relief and comfort. It's finished with a soft BreatheKnit cover that helps air circulate, but you can upgrade to a GlacioTex cover if you tend to sleep hot.

Firmness and comfort Helix ranks the Midnight as a medium-firm mattress, and although our testers found it softer than expected at first, after some time, we agreed with the assessment (we gave it a 5-6/10). The foam layers contour to the body, offering pressure relief that's particularly notable for those who sleep on their side. The plush surface does provide a foam 'hug', but the medium-firm feel will appeal to couples who like different sleep surfaces.

Stomach sleepers and those with a heavier build are likely to find the mattress too soft. If you do want something firmer, but you like what this brand has to offer, we have good news: the Helix range has models for all sleep style/firmness preferences. Check out the Helix Twilight, which is the same as the Midnight, but with a firmer comfort layer.

Performance The superior motion isolation on the Helix Midnight makes this a great choice for those sharing a bed with a restless sleeper. The temperature regulation is also good, even with the basic BreatheKnit cover. And if you sleep particularly hot, there’s the option to add a specialized GlacioTex Cooling Cover at checkout for an extra fee. The edge support is average, but this is only really notable for how well the Helix Midnight performed in our other testing areas.

Value for money The Helix Midnight sits squarely in the mid-range price bracket. However, an evergreen sale means there's always at least 20% off, and if you can hang on until a major sale event, you might save even more.

Best queen size memory foam mattress

Nectar

3. Nectar Memory Foam Mattress

✅ You want the memory foam 'hug': The all-foam design of the Nectar Memory Foam cradles your joints as you sleep. ✅ You share with a restless partner: A layer of cradling foam absorbs movements and keeps motion transfer to a minimum. ✅ You want high performance at a lower price: Evergreen sales make the Nectar Memory Foam a bargain for the quality, and the trial and warranty are very generous for a bed in this price bracket.

❌ You get hot in the night: While the Nectar Memory Foam offers decent temperature regulation, it can get warm on a hot night. The Cocoon Chill (#4) has a similar design, but adds a cooling cover. ❌ You want a responsive surface: The cradling effect of memory foam can feel confining. A hybrid like the Saatva Classic (#1) has a bouncier, more responsive surface. ❌  You need plenty of support: Front sleepers and those with heavier builds might find the Nectar has too much sink, not enough support.

🔎  The Nectar Memory Foam has the classic hug of memory foam at an excellent price. It's a particularly strong option for side sleepers, as the gel-infused memory foam cradles the pressure points. ★★★★

We think the Nectar mattress is the best memory foam mattress around, with it being suitable for a wide range of sleepers. And you can happily ignore the MSRP – Nectar's mattress is always on sale. This is a great choice if you’re on a budget but still want to invest in quality.

Design and materials The Nectar Memory Foam is a 12-inch, all-foam mattress. It's topped with a breathable cooling cover that sits on two inches of plush therapeutic gel-infused memory foam. Beneath this is a three-inch dynamic response foam layer, which offers support and rebound, followed by a seven-inch stability base layer. Finally, a shift-resistant lower cover keeps your mattress in place.

Firmness and comfort Like most memory foam mattresses, the Nectar gives you a body ‘hug’ where it contours to your body to support pressure points. This makes it a particularly good choice for side sleepers and those who suffer with joint pain. But while your body will feel cradled, it doesn't have the 'quicksand' feel of some memory foams.

At a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, this mattress provides plenty of support and a sleep surface that will appeal to most. However, if you’re a stomach sleeper or of a heavier build, the Nectar can feel a little too soft, without the support to keep your spine properly aligned.

Performance The Nectar really excels when it comes to motion isolation, with the memory foam absorbing movement extremely well. It’s also got surprisingly good edge support for an all-foam mattress. If you like to spread out across the queen-size surface, you should feel supported right to the edge. With a three-inch layer of gel memory foam at the top of the mattress, the Nectar doesn’t absorb heat as much as some all-foam options, but we still wouldn’t recommend it if you are a very hot sleeper. Check out the Cocoon by Sealy Chill – this has a similar design but with the addition of a phase-change cover (see our Nectar vs Cocoon mattress comparison to see exactly how they match up).

Value for money Pay no attention to the MSRP of the Nectar Memory Foam – evergreen sales means it's always at a discount. These discounts put the Nectar at the lower end of the mid-range price bracket. An excellent price for the quality, especially when you add in a 365-night trial and a lifetime warranty.

Best queen size cooling mattress

The Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress in a box

4. Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress

✅ You sleep hot: The phase-change material top cover absorbs and dissipates heat, while breathable foams help air circulate. ✅ You sleep on your front or back: A firmer surface offers more support for the hips and lower back, making it a good choice for front or back sleepers. ✅ You want cooling on a budget: The Cocoon Chill is an affordable alternative to high-end cooling mattresses with lofty price points. If you have a flexible budget, consider upgrading with the Extra-Chill technology.

❌ You want to be hugged by the foam: With a firmer sleeping surface (we rate it 8/10), you sleep on top of the Cocoon Chill. For more sink, we recommend the Helix Midnight (#2) or Nectar Memory Foam (#3). ❌ You sleep at the edges: Edge supporting is a little lacking, so if you want to be able to press up off the edges of your bed, you might be better with a different model. ❌  You have a big overheating problem: The Cocoon Chill has excellent cooling properties for the price, but if you often wake up hot and uncomfortable, you'll need to shell out a bit more for a more specialist option.

🔎  The Cocoon by Sealy Chill is a memory foam mattress with superior cooling technology and a firmer surface that appeals to front and back sleepers. It might not perform as well as as pricier cooling options, but it's still a good choice for budget-conscious sleepers. ★★★★

Hot sleepers on a budget should check out the Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress. This all-foam model is similar to the Nectar (#3) but with the addition of a phase-change cover to aid with temperature regulation. While it can’t compete with the best cooling mattresses , which cost a fair bit more, for an all-foam mattress it does an impressive job of keeping sleepers cool.

Design and materials The Cocoon by Sealy Chill is an all-foam mattress (although there is a hybrid upgrade available). Six inches of durable memory foam provide a supportive base, followed by a Responsive Comfort Layer that minimizes motion transfer. A Perfect Fit Memory Foam layer relieves the pressure points and encourages airflow, but the star of the design is the cooling cover. Made with phase-change fibers, it helps dissipate trapped heat for a pleasant night.

Firmness and Comfort While Sealy Chill rates the Cocoon as a 6/10 on the firmness scale, our testing panel found it firmer than that – around an 8/10. This might be too firm for some lighter bodies, but it should be supportive and comfortable for front and back sleepers. With cushioning memory foam cradling the pressure points, the Cocoon Chill will feel comfortable for most side sleepers. However, if you like to sink into the mattress, the firmer surface might be an issue.

Performance The standout feature of the Cocoon by Sealy Chill is the impressive temperature regulation. Even on warm nights, our testers stayed comfortably cool. This is thanks to a combination of a phase-change material cover and breathable memory foam, allowing hot air to circulate and dissipate.

As well as quality temperature regulation, the Cocoon Chill performed well in our motion isolation testing. However, weaker edge support might be an issue if you share with a partner or you like to stretch out.

Value for money Cooling mattresses typically come with a high price tag due to the specialized materials and build. The Cocoon by Sealy Chill bucks that trend, offering exceptional temperature regulation in the lower mid-range price bracket. Plus, an evergreen discount and freebie offer makes this mattress excellent value for money.

Best queen size organic mattress

Avocado Green Mattress

5. Avocado Green Mattress

✅ You want an organic mattress: Avocado uses certified organic latex, cotton, and wool, and prioritizes eco-friendly processes throughout the build. ✅ You have a heavier build: The Avocado Green mattress is rated to hold up to 700lbs without sacrificing support. ✅ You sleep on your back or stomach: The ergonomic coils promote healthy spine alignment, while the firmer feel provide ample support.

❌ You sleep on your side: The firmer surface of the Avocado Green mattress lacks the contouring side sleepers often need. Consider the pillow top upgrade, or the Helix Midnight (#2). ❌ You have a tight budget: Organic mattresses are typically pricey and the Avocado is no exception. There are cheaper natural options in our organic mattress guide. ❌  You have a slight build: A firmer surface might not offer the sink or contouring a lighter body needs. The pillow top or box-top upgrade will help add cushioning to the pressure points.

🔎  An organic hybrid mattress, the Avocado Green Mattress is an excellent choice for back sleepers who want an eco-friendly bed. The pocketed coils offers ergonomic support, but side sleepers might prefer something more cushioned and contouring. ★★★★

If you're looking for an eco-friendly mattress the Avocado Green is a great choice. One of our recommended best organic mattresses , the Avocado Green is particularly well suited to back sleepers and heavier weight sleepers, thanks to a firmly supportive surface.

Materials and design Made from a combination of Dunlop latex , wool, cotton and pocketed coils, the mattress is GOTS, GOLS and Greenguard Gold certified. There are three layers to the standard mattress: a cotton and wool cover, a layer of Dunlop latex foam, and a base layer of pocketed coils. These coils are divided into five ‘strategic zones’, which are designed to support the shoulders, hips, and lower back in different ways. The mattress is finished with needle-tufted rosettes, which are made by hand for increased durability. There's also a vegan version of the mattress, which contains no wool (and is approved by PETA).

Firmness and comfort Avocado rates the mattress 7/10 on the firmness scale and our testers agreed. The innerspring layer provides ergonomic support, keeping your back aligned, relieving pressure, and promoting even weight distribution. The firmer feel is best for back sleepers, while front sleepers should feel comfortable. The mattress can support combined weight up to 700lbs without any sinkage or loss of support.

Due to the firmer surface, side sleepers and lighter sleepers might want to invest in the pillow top upgrade. This is an expensive addition ($300 for a queen), but it does provider the contouring a side sleeper needs. For an even softer upgrade, you can add a plush box top for $1,100.

Performance The Avocado Green mattress performed strongly in all our testing areas. We were particularly impressed with the edge support – Avocado uses a reinforced steel perimeter to ensure the mattress doesn't dip at the perimeter. Motion isolation is also excellent, thanks to the individually pocketed coils that keep movement contained. We were impressed with the temperature regulation, as the mattress was cool-to-touch and stayed comfortable on warm nights.

Value for money Like most latex hybrids, the Avocado Green mattress sits in the premium price bracket. Semi-regular 10% off Avocado mattress deals , make this mattress a little more affordable, but don't expect much more than that. However, the durability, performance, and hand-crafted finish do help justify the price tag. For an organic mattress at a cheaper price, try the Awara Natural Hybrid Mattress .

How to choose the best queen size mattress

A mattress is a big investment and you’ll want to make sure that you choose the right one for your sleeping requirements. Here are the things you should consider when choosing your new mattress:

  • Materials – Memory foam in particular can be quite a divisive material. Some people love the ‘hug’ it gives, while others feel smothered by it, and might get on better with a hybrid, made with a combination of springs and foam, or a latex mattress that has more bounce than memory foam (but which will cost a lot more). Choose your materials depending on whether you want to sink into a mattress or sleep on top of it.
  • Firmness – Side sleepers and those of a lighter build generally prefer medium to soft mattresses, while back and stomach sleepers along with those of a heavier build prefer firm. However, this does come down to personal preference.
  • Price – A higher price tag doesn’t always mean a better mattress. Prioritize the features that you need over the price of the mattress.
  • Temperature – How hot do you get at night? If you’re prone to overheating, make sure you choose a mattress with features that help keep it cool; hybrids tend to be better in that regard as their spring layers allow air to circulate within the mattress.
  • Trial periods – One of the great things about modern mattresses is that most come with a trial period so you can try them at home. Make sure the trial period is long enough for you to give the mattress a good test run and check the terms and conditions.

Is it worth getting a queen size mattress?

Queen mattresses are extremely popular for good reason. Big enough for a couple to sleep on comfortably, they’re also ideal for single sleepers who like to stretch out sideways.

If you have a smaller bedroom a queen mattress will also give you extra space around the bed. A queen mattress typically measures 60" x 80", so you’ll get an extra 18 inches of walking space around the bed compared to a king size mattress. And queen sizes are easier to move around, flip or rotate. Finally, queen mattresses are also considerably cheaper than a king size, meaning you can afford to get a better quality mattress for your budget.

What you should know

Helix Midnight is a top choice for its balanced comfort and support. It provides cooling, pressure relief, and accommodates all sleeping positions at an affordable price. Side sleepers will especially benefit from just-right contouring for the hips, keeping the spine in alignment.

  • We found Helix Midnight to be exceptionally comfortable for side sleepers.
  • The mattress offers great value at $1,373.
  • The Helix Midnight is ideal for those who need a balance of softness and support.
  • It features a hybrid design with memory foam and coils.
  • The mattress provides excellent pressure relief and spinal alignment.

Why we like Helix Midnight as best overall

Helix Midnight earns its spot as our pick for the best overall queen mattress because it balances comfort and support exceptionally well and is ideal for all types of sleepers, including those with back pain. Our testing and research show that this mattress is top-notch in several categories that help create an ideal sleep experience, including pressure relief, cooling, and medium-firm support. ( 1 )

The Helix Midnight features a hybrid design that combines the contouring comfort of memory foam with the responsive support of coils. The memory foam layers conform to the body to alleviate pressure points, while the coils offer hardy support for optimal spinal alignment. A cooling pillow top helps keep overheating and sweating at bay, which can disturb sleep and impact overall sleep quality. ( 2 )

Our tester was particularly impressed with the Helix Midnight’s ability to accommodate different sleeping positions. As soon as our tester, who suffers from chronic back pain, laid on this mattress for the first time, they noticed significant pressure relief in their back and hips. They felt it provides good support and keeps the spine aligned, preventing hip sinkage that can lead to low back pain. ( 1 )

Priced in the mid-range at $1,373, the Helix Midnight has excellent value for its quality. It has features typical of more expensive mattresses, such as zoned lumbar support and a breathable cover. Meanwhile, a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty provide peace of mind and ample time to decide if it’s the right fit for you.

While the Helix Midnight has many strengths, there are some drawbacks to consider as well. Depending on preference, some users may find the mattress too soft or too firm, so it is best suited for those who like an in-between level of support. Also, as with most memory foam products, there is a slight off-gassing period when the mattress is unpacked, which may bother some people.

Overall, the Helix Midnight is a well-rounded, balanced choice. Its combination of memory foam and coils makes for a perfect balance between comfort and support. It’s a great value at a mid-range price point that doesn’t sacrifice material quality or durability. Its medium firmness is ideal for side sleepers looking for pressure relief or back sleepers needing spinal alignment.

Best memory foam queen mattress: Nectar Memory Foam

A mattress on a wooden bed frame with a modern, minimalist bedroom setting.

Best memory foam queen mattress

Nectar memory foam.

Nectar Premier stands out for its luxurious memory foam feel. It helps regulate temperature for a comfortable sleeping experience and is made from safer, low-VOC-certified materials. Its lifetime warranty and year-long trial period are industry gold standards.

  • The mattress’s versatile support works for back, side, and stomach sleepers.
  • The mattress comes with a lifetime warranty and a 365-night trial period.
  • The Nectar Memory Foam is perfect for side sleepers who need contouring support and couples looking for motion isolation.
  • The mattress features cooling technology to help regulate temperature.

Why we like Nectar Memory Foam as best memory foam

The Nectar Memory Foam Mattress is versatile, comfortable, and supportive, with low motion transfer and ideal pain relief. Rated as a medium-firm (6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale), it strikes a sweet spot for all types of sleepers. The top layer of gel-infused memory foam provides a plush, contouring feel that cradles your body and reduces pressure points. This 2-inch layer also helps with cooling by breaking up the dense memory foam to allow airflow, so sleep isn’t interrupted by overheating, a common issue with traditional memory foam mattresses. ( 3 ) ( 4 )

If you share your bed with a partner or pet, and one of you tends to toss and turn, motion isolation is a key feature to look for in a mattress. The Nectar excels in this area thanks to its 3-inch layer of responsive polyfoam that effectively absorbs movement, making you less likely to wake up from your partner’s tossing and turning. ( 5 )  A clever 7-inch support layer of dense polyfoam at the base of the mattress resists sagging and helps with edge support, making it easier to get in and out of bed. This feature is ideal for people who like to sit on the edge of the bed or couples who need every inch of space.

The foam used in the Nectar Mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it is free from harmful chemicals and has low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Environmental Working Group recommends low-VOC mattresses to avoid health problems and improve indoor air quality. ( 6 ) Products with this certification have also been tested for performance and durability. ( 7 )

There are a couple of noteworthy downsides to The Nectar. Despite the gel infusion, the mattress may be hotter than some competitor mattresses. While it’s ideal for relieving pressure points on the hips and shoulders, spinal alignment for back sleepers may not be as good as other brands.

Best cheap queen mattress: Emma Mattress Hybrid Comfort

A mattress with a white top and dark grey sides on a plain white background.

Best cheap queen mattress

Emma mattress hybrid comfort.

The Emma Hybrid Comfort offers a budget-friendly option without compromising on quality. Its air-filled foam helps dissipate body heat to keep you cool and sweat-free. Solid construction and enhanced edge support prevent sagging and add to the durability of the mattress for even more value.

  • Our testers appreciated the Hybrid Comfort’s strong core support.
  • The mattress is highly affordable at $1,319 without sacrificing comfort.
  • It’s suitable for all sleeping positions.
  • The Emma Mattress Hybrid Comfort provides good pressure relief with pocket springs and memory foam.
  • The mattress features cooling technology using air-filled foam to keep you sweat-free.

Why we like Emma Hybrid Comfort as best cheap

The Emma Comfort Hybrid Mattress is a durable option at an affordable price without compromising quality. It combines memory foam and pocket springs that balance comfort and support, rivaling more expensive options.

Memory foam molds to your body and pocket springs offer support to prevent you from sinking too far into the mattress. This helps keep your spine properly aligned throughout the night, which is great for people with back pain.

The Emma Comfort Hybrid mattress is built to last, resist sagging, and retain its shape over time. It also has reinforced edge support to use the entire mattress surface without feeling like you might roll off. Thanks to individually wrapped pocket springs, it absorbs and prevents movement from transferring across the bed, so you won’t be disturbed by your bedmate stirring during the night.

Another standout feature is the inclusion of a breathable Airgocell® foam layer that’s half air to boost airflow and help dissipate heat. Our testing found that the mattress stayed cool throughout the night, even in warmer conditions. This feature is beneficial for hot sleepers who often wake up feeling overheated.

Overall, our tester found the Emma Comfort Hybrid a well-rounded mattress that works well for most sleeping positions. It felt comfortable and supportive, with excellent motion isolation and temperature regulation. However, they did notice that it took a few nights to fully adjust to the firmness level. Some users, especially lighter-weight people, might find the mattress too firm, especially if they prefer a softer sleeping surface.

The Emma Comfort Hybrid is an excellent value for money at a significantly lower price point than many other hybrid mattresses on the market. It’s an affordable option that doesn’t skimp on quality, so more people can enjoy a quality sleep experience, even on a budget.

Best queen mattress for back pain: Wink Beds The WinkBed

A mattress on a wooden bed frame in a stylish bedroom with blue walls and bedside tables with lamps.

Best queen mattress for back pain

Wink beds the winkbed.

The WinkBed is designed to alleviate back pain with its specialized support. It has gel-infused foam that cushions joints and padded lumbar support to ease back pain. You can choose from four firmness options to ensure you get ideal support and comfort for your needs.

  • Our testers found the Winkbed excellent for lumbar support.
  • The mattress offers durable quality for a reasonable price at $1,799.
  • It’s ideal for those suffering from back pain.
  • The mattress is available in multiple firmness options.
  • It features cooling technology for temperature regulation.

Why we like The WinkBed as the best for back pain

Research shows that mattress quality is significantly linked to low back pain. The firmness of the mattress and how long it has been used are the main factors affecting spinal alignment, pressure distribution, and sleep quality. Older mattresses may worsen lower back pain symptoms, so choosing a quality, durable mattress is a good defense against back pain. ( 8 )

The WinkBed Mattress combines the benefits of both innerspring and foam. It has a Euro-pillow top with gel-infused foam for a plush surface and a lumbar pad that immediately relieves pressure, which is particularly beneficial for people with back pain. Multiple firmness options are available, including the Plus option with an additional latex support layer, ideal for heavier people and optimal for relieving pressure in the spine. ( 9 )

Beneath this, the mattress has a layer of individually wrapped coils for targeted support and proper spinal alignment.

While testing the luxury firm, we found The WinkBed to be a well-rounded mattress that works for most sleeping positions. It’s comfortable and supportive, with excellent motion isolation and temperature regulation. However, our tester noticed it took a few nights to fully adjust to the firmness level.

Our tester noted that the mattress is plush and soft for back sleepers with excellent lumbar support that maintains spinal alignment, which is crucial for preventing and alleviating back pain. ( 10 ) They enjoyed the firmness for back sleeping, stating, “My body felt lifted except for slight sinkage around my hips, spine stayed in neutral alignment, didn’t eliminate my back pain but still felt comfortable to sleep on.”

The WinkBed has a breathable Tencel cover and gel-infused foam designed to promote airflow and dissipate heat. In our testing experience, the mattress stayed cool throughout the night, even during warmer months. Our tester confirmed that “the cover is breathable, and coils help provide airflow throughout the mattress but don’t necessarily feel cool to the touch.”

Our tester also reported that the edge support was sturdy and supportive when sitting on the edge of the bed, and it wasn’t slippery; however, there was quite a bit of sinkage when sitting on the corner of the bed. Plus, some users might find the luxury firm mattress a bit too firm, especially if they prefer a softer sleeping surface. However, several firmness options start at “soft”  (actually medium firm), which is 4.5/10 for firmness.

The Winkbed comes with the Duratech Lifetime Durability System, which includes third-party durability testing certifications. According to the company, it has been proven that the mattress sags less than 2% over 20 years of use.  While The WinkBed is priced higher than other options on the market, its quality and features justify the cost, especially for people with chronic back pain.

Best queen mattress in a box: Bear Mattress Elite Hybrid

A mattress on a wooden bed frame with a blue background and bedside tables with lamps.

Best queen mattress in a box

Bear mattress elite hybrid.

Bear Mattress Elite Hybrid combines convenience with high-quality materials. It has luxury materials including copper and gel-infused foams for cooling and antimicrobial benefits. It is also versatile, with balanced support and comfort for all body types and sleeping styles.

  • We appreciate the Elite Hybrid’s firm support and pressure relief.
  • The mattress is durable and easy to set up.
  • It’s great for all sleepers with supportive pocket springs and a plush top.
  • The Bear Mattress features advanced airflow technology for cooling.
  • It offers a balanced feel of comfort and support.

Why we like Bear Mattress Elite Hybrid as best in a box

The Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress comes conveniently in a box and combines the benefits of memory foam and pocket springs for a supportive yet plush sleeping surface. It’s also durable and available in three firmness levels. We tested the medium, which has a balanced amount of firmness.

During our testing, we found that the mattress offered a good balance of softness and support. The pocket springs add a level of support that prevents you from sinking too deeply, which helps maintain proper spinal alignment throughout the night. Our tester felt supported the entire time they used the mattress and noted most body types and sleeping positions should feel comfortable on the Bear Elite Hybrid.

The mattress has a breathable Celliant cover and cooling gel-infused foam layers for better airflow and less heat. The foam is also copper-infused, which can help with cooling and has antimicrobial properties. ( 10 ) We found that it stayed cool throughout the night and was airy and plush to the touch.

Durability is another strong point for the Bear Elite Hybrid. The mattress resists sagging and maintains its shape over time. However, we noticed that while the mattress felt sturdy overall, the edges did not provide as much support as the center when sitting at the side of the bed. It still offers excellent support when lying partly off the bed, and our tester felt the mattress was ideal for people with mobility issues.

Heavy sleepers might not find the medium firm as supportive as they need, particularly when sleeping on their side. Our testing confirmed that the mattress tends to err on the softer side, which might not be ideal for everyone. For most people, it’s an excellent choice for any sleeping position, including combination sleepers who change positions throughout the night.

Best firm queen mattress: Nolah Evolution Firm

A mattress on a bed frame with a blue background, bedside tables, and lamps.

Best firm queen mattress

Nolah evolution firm.

Nolah Evolution Firm provides a firm yet comfortable sleeping surface. It’s made from deep coils that are thicker at the edges for durability and additional edge support. The mattress also has excellent pressure relief, cooling, and lumbar support thanks to a quilted topper and open-cell memory foam, along with specialized support zoning.

  • The Nolah Evolution Firm is long-lasting but comes at a high price point.
  • The mattress is ideal for back and stomach sleepers.
  • The mattress features advanced airflow technology for cooling.
  • The Nolah Evolution firm offers great pressure relief.

Why we like Nolah Evolution Firm as best firm

The Nolah Evolution Firm mattress is unique from other firm mattresses because it has coils grouped into three zones to provide specific support where it’s most needed, especially in the lumbar area. This design helps align the spine and relieve pressure points, and the firm design is especially supportive for back and stomach sleepers.

The mattress has individually wrapped coils that allow for independent movement and work with the foam to reduce disruptions when one partner moves at night. Thicker edge coils provide stronger support and make getting in and out of bed easier. At eight inches, the coils offer deep support and are designed to maintain the mattress’s shape and comfort over time. Underneath it all, the coils rest on a layer of recycled plant fibers, boosting the mattress’s stability and durability.

Another standout feature is the mattress’s ability to keep you cool overnight. The top four inches of the mattress are surrounded by a border gusset, which allows air to escape and prevents overheating. It also has a cooling cover and breathable open-cell foam that doesn’t react to body heat like traditional memory foam, which is ideal if you tend to sleep hot. ( 12 )

If you’re a lightweight side sleeper, you might find the mattress too firm, as it doesn’t offer the same level of contouring as softer mattresses. If you’re a strict stomach sleeper, you might also find it too firm. If you love the hugging feel of memory foam, this mattress might not be a good fit, so consider one of the other firmness options if you’re interested in a Nolah Evolution mattress.

At $2,499, the Nolah Evolution Firm is priced in the higher range, but it comes with a 120-night sleep trial you can take advantage of to ensure it’s the perfect match for your needs. Plus, it has a lifetime warranty if any problems arise.

Best queen mattress for side sleepers: Saatva Classic

A mattress on a wooden bed frame in a cozy bedroom with blue walls and bedside tables with lamps.

Best queen mattress for side sleepers

Saatva classic.

Icon Off Gassing Mattress

Saatva Classic is tailored for side sleepers with its plush, zoned support system. It’s made from eco-friendly materials including a hypoallergenic organic cover and is delivered with a white glove service free of charge.

  • We loved Saatva Classic’s plush and zoned support.
  • The Saatva Classic is made from high-quality materials which justify the price.
  • This mattress is perfect for all sleeping positions, especially side sleepers.
  • The mattress features a breathable cover for cooling.
  • The Saatva Classic offers excellent pressure relief and spinal alignment.

Why we like Saatva Classic as best for side sleepers

Sleeping on your side is likely the most effective sleep position, as research points to fewer awakenings and better sleep quality in this position compared to others. ( 13 ) The Saatva Classic mattress has earned its reputation as a top choice for side sleepers, and our firsthand testing confirms why. This luxury innerspring mattress offers comfort and support that caters specifically to the needs of side sleepers.

It has exceptional pressure relief. During our testing, we noticed that the mattress did an excellent job aligning the spine and contouring around the shoulders and hips, critical pressure points for side sleepers. ( 14 ) The plush Euro pillow top and the zoned support system work together to alleviate pressure, making it easier to stay comfortably sleeping all night.

The Saatva Classic has a zoned support system ideal for side sleepers. It creates firmer and softer support in the lumbar region around the shoulders and hips. Our tester noted the mattress felt incredibly sturdy and plush and was responsive, making it easy to switch positions during the night.

Edge support is often overlooked, but it’s essential for side sleepers who tend to move around a lot. The Saatva Classic excels in this area, offering some of the best edge support we’ve tested. When our tester was lying half off the bed, they still felt comfortable and not at risk of rolling off. This feature is handy for couples who need a maximal sleeping area.

Regarding cooling, the Saatva Classic has a breathable cover and a coil-based support system that promotes airflow. During our testing, we found that the mattress felt airy and soft, which makes for a cooler sleeping experience.

Lightweight side sleepers might find the mattress a tad too firm, especially if they prefer a more enveloping feel. In such cases, we recommend considering the plush model of the Saatva Classic, which offers the same high-quality construction with a softer feel.

The Saatva Classic costs $2,095 for a queen-size at full price, which puts it in the higher range. However, it comes with a 365-night trial to test the fit and a lifetime warranty for peace of mind on your investment.

Best hybrid queen mattress: Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling

A mattress on a wooden bed frame in a cozy bedroom with a blue background and bedside tables with lamps.

Best hybrid queen mattress

Brooklyn bedding aurora luxe cooling.

Icon Material

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling offers a luxurious hybrid experience with plenty of bells and whistles such as advanced cooling tech that keeps you within an ideal body temperature range all year long. It’s also extremely durable due to pocketed steel coils, premium foams, and advanced edge support.

  • Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling is a high-end mattress with premium features.
  • The mattress is suitable for all types of sleepers.
  • The Aurora Luxe features advanced temperature control.
  • Premium foams and pocketed coils in the mattress provide superior comfort.

Why we like Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling as best hybrid

With the support of innerspring coils and the comfort of foam layers, The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a versatile choice for a wide range of sleepers. The foam and coils combination gives a comfortable and supportive feel without being too soft or firm.

The hybrid construction includes durable pocketed steel coils in the base layer, which help with longevity and support over the years and also improve the mattress’s edge support. The multiple foam layers work together to offer excellent pressure relief. The top layers contour to your body, alleviating pressure points, especially around the shoulders and hips.

The Aurora Luxe comes in three firmness levels: soft, medium, and firm. You can choose the level of support that best suits your sleeping position and personal preference. Side sleepers might prefer the soft or medium options for their pressure-relieving qualities, while back and stomach sleepers might find the firm option more supportive.

Many studies have shown that falling and staying asleep are linked to body temperature. Body temperature follows a 24-hour cycle, decreasing during sleep and increasing when awake. This is important for healthy sleep, not just in hot or cold weather but even overnight. ( 15 )

One of the most impressive features is the mattress’s cooling technology. The top layer is infused with a phase-change material that helps to regulate your body temperature throughout the night. ( 16 ) When the material heats up, it changes from a solid to a liquid to absorb excess heat, helping to cool the body. When the body cools down, the material releases the stored heat as it changes back to a solid state, providing warmth.

While the Aurora Luxe offers many benefits, it’s important to note that it’s priced on the higher end, so it may not be the best option for those on a tight budget. However, considering its high-quality construction and advanced features, many might find it worth the investment. Brooklyn Bedding often offers discounts, which can make the mattress more affordable.

How we test mattresses

Strong clinical and scientific research is a solid starting place, but we go beyond desk work. Our thorough approach to mattress reviews involves a professional team of certified sleep science coaches, industry experts, and consumers who physically test mattresses. We meticulously evaluate every product and provide custom images to support our findings, ensuring the accuracy of our results. For more details, you can check out our complete mattress testing methodology .

Performance (sleep experience)—30%

A high-quality mattress should feel like it’s designed to provide you with the best sleep of your life. They should also deliver on the promise of a great sleep experience. Our sleep science coaches assess various factors to reflect the functional aspects of the mattress as well as the user’s sleep experience. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Temperature regulation
  • Motion isolation
  • Edge support

Comfort and support—30%

Alongside the sleep experience, comfort and support are just as important for a healthy and restful sleep. A high-quality mattress should assist in providing relief with certain aches and pains a user may experience when sleeping. It should also help users wake up feeling energized and rested. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Pressure relief
  • Spinal alignment support
  • Customization

Assessing value involves a meticulous examination of several key factors that contribute to a mattress’s worth. A mattress priced just within reach of its target audience yet surpasses competitors in terms of materials, performance, and support presents a compelling value proposition. However, value is not solely determined by the lowest price point. We also determine it by balancing cost and a mattress’s tangible benefits.

Customer experience—10%

Sometimes, the mattress can be great, but if the overall shopping experience wasn’t, that could easily put a sour taste in a user’s mouth about the mattress they just purchased. We put in the hours to determine how well the entire process of buying a mattress matches users’ expectations and what options are available when something goes wrong.

  • Customer service
  • Sleep trial

Health and safety—10%

It’s important to understand that a mattress is more than just a sleeping surface—it’s an environment where you spend a significant portion of your life. We meticulously assess critical aspects of mattresses that may directly impact your well-being and peace of mind.

Our factors in this rating include:

  • Hypoallergenic materials
  • Off-gassing and chemical exposure
  • Safety certifications

What to consider when shopping for the best queen mattress

Choosing the right queen mattress will mean a better chance of getting all-important quality sleep, which is essential for overall health. Here are some key factors to keep in mind as you sift through all the options:

Sleep position

Your preferred sleep position should be top of mind when selecting a mattress since different positions do best with varying levels of support and comfort:

  • Stomach sleepers : Typically need a firm to extra firm mattress to prevent their hips from sinking and misaligning the spine. A supportive surface helps maintain proper alignment and reduces the risk of back pain.
  • Side sleepers : Should look for a balanced mattress with ample support and a plush layer to cradle pressure points around the hips and shoulders. This helps alleviate discomfort and promotes better sleep quality.
  • Back sleepers : Like stomach sleepers, they need a firm mattress to keep their spine aligned and prevent sinking hips. A medium-firm mattress with gentle body contouring can help alleviate joint pain and pressure.

The type of materials used in a mattress will impact how comfortable, supportive, and durable it is:

  • Innerspring : Provide good support with minimal sinkage and tend to sleep cooler, making them a good option for those who overheat at night.
  • Memory foam : Contour to the body, offering excellent pressure relief for the hips and shoulders. However, they can retain heat, which might be uncomfortable for hot sleepers.
  • Hybrid : Combine the benefits of innerspring and foam, offering support and comfort. They often include cooling technologies to mitigate heat retention.

Special features

  • Motion transfer : If you share your bed, motion transfer is worth considering. Memory foam mattresses are typically the best at isolating motion, but high-quality hybrid mattresses with dense foam can also have good motion isolation.
  • Edge support : Good edge support increases the usable surface area of your bed and makes it easier to get in and out. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses generally provide superior edge support compared to all-foam models.
  • Cooling tech : If you tend to sleep hot, cooling technology is an essential feature to consider. Many modern mattresses incorporate advanced cooling materials and designs to help regulate temperature. Look for features like gel-infused memory foam, breathable covers, and phase-change materials that absorb and dissipate heat.

Trial period and return policy

Shopping for a mattress online can be challenging, so many companies offer sleep trial periods and free returns to help the process seem less daunting. Familiarize yourself with the return policies and any associated fees before making a purchase to ensure you have the flexibility to find the perfect fit.

Customer reviews

While brand websites provide product details, you’ll get more of a human touch by reading customer reviews that offer real insights into a mattress’s performance, feel, and durability. Reading reviews can help you make a more informed decision and avoid potential pitfalls.

How much does a queen mattress cost?

The cost of a queen mattress can vary widely depending on the materials, brand, and features. You can expect to pay between $500 and $2,500 on average. Budget options typically start around $500 with basic comfort and support, while mid-range mattresses, priced between $1,000 and $1,500, typically include special features like cooling technology and superior support systems. Premium models, which can cost upwards of $2,000, usually have luxury materials and certifications, are extra durable, and have extensive (often lifetime) warranties. Consider what you need and your preferences, and compare options against your budget to be sure you get the best value for your investment.

Who should sleep on a queen-size mattress?

Queen-sized mattresses are big enough for couples, especially medium—or smaller individuals, single people with pets, or large bedrooms. They are also ideal for single people who toss and turn a lot or have space to spread out. Larger couples, those with kids who often join them at night, or couples who both tend to spread out during sleep might do better with a larger size.

The best queen mattress to buy depends on your budget, specific needs, and preferences. For overall quality and comfort, we recommend the Helix Midnight due to its balanced support and pressure relief. If you prefer a hybrid mattress, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is an excellent choice for its cooling technology and versatile firmness options. For a luxury option with organic and natural materials in mind, the Saatva Classic is a luxury innerspring hybrid option with supremely comfortable and excellent reviews.

A queen mattress can range from eight to 14 inches thick, including slim, standard, and thick sizes. A standard thickness of 10 to 12 inches works for most adults to balance comfort, support, and durability. Thicker mattresses often have more layers that improve support and pressure relief, making them versatile for multiple sleep positions and body sizes.

On average, a queen mattress should be replaced at least every seven to 10 years, but the timeframe can vary depending on the quality of the mattress and how well it is maintained. Some research suggests on average, people use a mattress for about seven years, with a range of about three and a half to nearly 10 years, and the older a mattress gets, the more likely it will contribute to low back pain. Signs that it’s time to replace your mattress include sagging, losing support, waking with low back pain, and feeling uncomfortable during sleep. ( 8 )

A standard queen-size mattress usually measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, with a height ranging from eight inches to over 14 inches. This sizing typically gives enough space for two average-sized adults to sleep comfortably. However, actual sizes can vary slightly depending on the brand and model, so it’s important to check the specific product details when buying a new mattress.
