"the tour itself was good there were times when i felt we were being rushed to leave when i would have preferred to stay longer instead of doing rug & leather demo/sales pitches at us.(Shopping was not a reason i chose this holiday) & i felt we were being used as bait for the various companies to make money.i did get sick at one point & as i only ate at provided accommodation & tour restaurant stops it was obviously from one of these places whose hygiene standards i thought was poor.communication was quite poor, & some of the published information was unclear & caused some unpleasant unnecessary issues while on tour.

"Perfect organization on very short notice. Driver was on-time at all meeting points during the whole journey of 4 dass through Jaipur, Ranthambore, Agra started from Delhi. All guides also were on-time and exzellent knowledge about the sights we have visited. Their english was very understandable. All three hotels chosen by Tour Operator were clean, safe and very good quality. That was very good choice including good breakfast (Ranthambore also dinnerbuffet). All moments were visited as per schedule but sometimes in different line up than outlined. You have to consider however that entrance fee to monuments is not included. Only Safari insider Ranthambore is included. Driver was excellent with very good knowledge about the area and good english. Safe travelling, safe and clean car with all safety requirements you need. Cold water was provided all the time. I really recommend this tour for erveryone who likes to get a first impression of India. Also relaxing time at hotels is sufficient.

The Rewards of Cycling in India

Cultural experience.

You can be sure that your time cycling in India will be full of fascinating cultural experiences, unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. Attend a dance performance at one of the many Vaishnavite Hindu monasteries on Majuli island known for its religious dance drama. Take a walking tour of the former capital of British occupied India for a deeper understanding of the country’s history, and visit the great fortress at Kumbhalgarh or the Jain temple complex at Ranakpur to see India’s religious diversity. Along the way, stay in Indian palaces that show you another side of India’s heritage. Your cycling holiday will give you lasting memories of your Indian cultural immersion.

Beautiful Landscapes

You’ll have the chance to experience the natural beauty of India with a cycling trip in the Assam or Rajasthan regions. Pass by national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and riverside villages as you cruise down the Bhramaputra, then hop on your bike and pedal through tea plantation country near Biswanath Ghat. In Rajasthan, ride through the blue city of Jodphur to the Mehrangarh fort with a dazzling view of the indigo houses down below. Switch gears to cycle dusty roads through the desert to Rohat, then climb to the palace-filled city of Deogarh and glimpse the verdant oasis set against the Aravalli Hills on a gauge train ride to Phulad. Outdoor enthusiasts will be pleased by the incredible scenery of India on this active adventure.

Engaging Activities

Along the cycling journey, there will be plenty of activities to keep everyone engaged and immersed in Indian culture. Our Bike&Boat tours provide daily activities for non-cyclists as well. Take a walk through the Nameri National Park, or safari through the Probitora Wildlife Sanctuary to glimpse elephants, rhino, wild buffalo, and an array of birds. Enjoy a tea tasting session for a glimpse of India’s extensive tea culture, then take in Guwahati from a trishaw. See the enduring customs of the traditionatl Bishnoi tribal villages on a jeep ride. There are plenty of active adventures and interesting experiences that await you on a bike tour through India.

This tour has been handcrafted by Grasshopper's Expedition Engineers. This team brings with them a wealth of knowledge on India, and all are experienced in the delivery of outstanding expeditions. In addition to a Grasshopper representative joining you, you will be supported by a well informed, English speaking local guide who can provide unique insights on the local customs, cultures and landscapes. Rest assured knowing that your Grasshopper guide is looking out for your safety and comfort at all times.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT…

We’re 60, live in regional Australia, and have liked occasional rides along local country roads in light traffic. So going to India and ‘Riding the Real Rajasthan’ was something very, very new, and turned out to be an absolute, wonderful eye-opener. The “Land of Kings” exceeded expectations! We’ve traveled countries where the landscapes, ‘things-to-do’, hotels, even eating spots all merge into a single hazy memory. India was different!

Reviews from our friends

How do i know which india bicycle tour is right for me.

We have several bike tours in India. Choosing the right India bike tour boils down to answering three questions:

Where in India do you want to bike?

The best cycling in India typically happens in the following regions:

  • North India - Rajasthan
  • South India - Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa
  • Northeast India - Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya
  • Himalayas - Uttarakhand and Ladakh

What kind of experiences do you have in mind?

Here’s a quick checklist to help you narrow down your choices:

  • Beaches - Head to South India
  • Wildlife - South India for the best overall experience. Assam for the one-horned rhino. Uttarakhand for tigers, and Rajasthan for birding, camels, and leopards
  • Taj Mahal - Rajasthan/North India
  • Forts and Palaces - Rajasthan
  • Deserts and Oases - Rajasthan
  • Tea Plantations - South India/Sikkim/Assam (northeast India)
  • Spectacular Temples - South India
  • Mountains - Sikkim/Uttarakhand/Ladakh

How much time do you have on your hands?

Our India bike tours vary in duration from 4 to 17 days.

Once you’ve got answers to these questions, you can pick from among the several tours we have in each region of India.

1. Choosing the Best Rajasthan Bike Tour

If you want to visit the Taj Mahal, experience authentic Indian rural life, shop in bustling bazaars, and soak in slices of India’s ancient and medieval history, our Rajasthan tours are your best bet.

However, Rajasthan itself is a region roughly the size of Germany, and there are plenty of ways to explore it on bike.

If you want to spend 13-14 days cycling north India with an itinerary that includes Rajasthan, Agra (Taj Mahal), and Delhi, we suggest the following two tours:

  • Exotic India Bike Tour

If you’ve got a time horizon of 7-8 days, and do not want to include Jaipur, Agra or Delhi with your Rajasthan tour, the following two tours might be right for you:

  • Colourful Rajasthan Luxury Bike Tour
  • Best of Rajasthan Bike Tour

If you only want to bike the famous Golden Triangle, which includes Jaipur, Agra, and Delhi, while incorporating a tiger safari and a bike ride in a bird sanctuary, we suggest the following tour:

  • Golden Triangle Bike Tour

2. Choosing the Best South India Bike Tour

If you want to bike through lush green forests, verdant tea gardens, relax at beautiful beaches, ride past herds of elephants, and bike along India’s splendid coastline, then our south India tours are what you’re looking for.

To better help you choose the south India bike tour best suited to your needs, we’ve classified our tours according to the highlight and the theme that best defines each tour. Keep in mind that each tour has plenty more to offer apart from this theme.

Wildlife If you’re a wildlife enthusiast who wants to experience at close quarters the wildlife India is famous for, the following tour is a good choice for you:

  • Wild South Luxury Bike Tour : This is the only south India bike tour that does not touch the coast.

Coast and Beaches If you want the coast and beaches to be the highlight of your south India bike tour, the following tours might be right for you:

  • Coast to Coast Bike Tour Both these tours start from Kerala on India’s west coast and end at Chennai on India’s east coast.

Goa If you’re interested in combining a southern India cycling experience with the famous beach resort destination of Goa, the following tours might interest you:

  • Bombay to Goa Bike Tour : This tour starts from Bombay, India's financial capital and the home of Bollywood befpre heading south to Goa, all the while staying close to the coast.
  • Bangalore to Goa Bike Tour : This tour covers the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi, the beautiful coffee growing highlands of Karnataka, and sandy beaches in Goa.
  • Enchanting Goa Bike Tour : This is a 5-day tour within Goa, covering its beaches, churches, and natural wonders.
  • Mysore to Goa by Gravel Bike : This tour covers beautiful palaces in Mysore, 1000-year temples, coffee plantations, and Goa's beautiful beaches.

Kerala If you want to explore the southern state of Kerala, often called “God’s own country” for its pristine beauty and rich culture, then the following tours might be of interest to you:

  • Classic Kerala Luxury Bike Tour , a complete Kerala luxury tour.
  • Kerala Escapade Bike Tour , a complete Kerala tour.
  • Kerala Backwaters Bike Tour . This is a short tour with a focus on backwaters, a unique ecosystem of lagoons, lakes, canals, and rivers that flow into the sea.
  • Kerala in Style: Bike, Hike and Kayak . This is a multi-sport tour that combines different adventure activities.

Complete South India If you want to explore all that south India has to offer, including its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, its spectacular temples, its wildlife, and its beautiful coastline, then the following tour would be a good fit:

  • Southern India Sojourn Bike Tour : This tour covers the three major south Indian states — Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. At 17 days, this is also our longest India cycling tour.

3. Choosing the Best Northeast India Bike Tour

Northeast India offers a little explored, yet stunningly beautiful side of India. We have the following three tours in northeast India:

Splendid Sikkim Bike Tour : Ride in the shadow of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, explore Buddhist monasteries and bike through plantations of the famous Darjeeling tea.

Arunachal and Assam Bike Tour : Your chance to meet the endangered one-horned rhinoceros in the wild and explore the single-largest tea growing region in the world.

Enthralling Meghalaya Bike Tour : Bike through the unspoiled beauty of the “Scotland of the East”, and visit the wettest place on earth, Mawsynram.

4. Choosing the Best Himalayas Bike Tour

If you want to explore the Indian Himalayas, we have the following two tours:

High in the Himalayas Bike Tour : Bike through Ladakh, an extension of the Tibetan plateau, located 3,500m (12,000 ft) above the sea level, and visit Khardung La, the highest motorable pass on earth.

Pristine Uttarakhand Bike Tour : Ride through charming colonial-era hill stations and get a chance to spot tigers at the famous Jim Corbett National park.

What Is the Best Time of the Year to Go On a Cycling Tour in India?

Given India’s vast geographical spread, the best time for a bike tour in India depends on where you’re headed.

Rajasthan and South India

Fall to spring (October to March) is the best time to visit Rajasthan and South India. The temperature varies between 5°C to 25°C (41°F to 77°F), depending on the specific month and the altitude of the place you’re in.

The same applies to all other places in the north Indian plains including Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Mumbai etc.

Northeast India

The best time to cycle northeast India is fall (September-November) & spring (March-May). Winters can get cold with snow in some of the higher-altitude destinations, while summer and monsoon months see heavy rainfall.

The best time to cycle Ladakh is June to August. Days are warm and sunny with little to no precipitation, although night time temperatures can drop close to freezing point.

Due to its high altitude, Ladakh remains out of bounds for tourists for the rest of the year owing to its inclement weather.

The best time for cycling in Uttarakhand is spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). The temperature during this time varies between 5°C to 25°C (41°F to 77°F) with mostly clear skies, making it ideal for cycling.

Which Are The Best Regions to Experience On an India Cycling Tour?

India is the seventh largest country in the world by land area, and also one of the most geographically diverse countries in the world. This means the cyclist is spoilt for choices when it comes to cycling in India. Here’s a quick primer to the best regions for cycling in India:

North India

The best region for cycling in north India is Rajasthan. It offers a wide variety of terrains including hills, plains, meadows, and deserts so that no two days feel alike.

Rajasthan has the best preserved culture and Indian traditions, complete with colorful traditional costumes, handicrafts, and folk culture. This includes some of the oldest and best preserved forts and palaces in India, several of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Everyday life in rural Rajasthan still continues the way it did centuries ago, so that a Rajasthan bike tour feels like stepping into a time machine and traveling to an era long gone by.

Rajasthan is also home to several national parks with sizable populations of tigers, leopards and other endangered animals.

The main cities in Rajasthan are Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaipur, and most Rajasthan cycling tours include these three in the itinerary.

Adjoining Rajasthan is Agra, home of the famous Taj Mahal. Delhi, the capital of India, and itself a major tourist destination on account of its historical monuments and bustling bazaars, is also located in close proximity.

South India

Where north India is sub-tropical and semi-arid, south India is tropical and lush.

The coastal regions are home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, such as those in Goa and Karnataka.

The highlands of south India are covered with lush green tea plantations and dense forests. They’re also home to several charming hill stations dating back to the colonial period, such as Ooty.

Aficionados of colonial-era architecture will especially appreciate Pondicherry, a former French colony that still retains much of its colonial charm, and Goa, a former Portuguese colony with several beautiful churches dating back to the Portuguese era.

The Western Ghats region of south India, covering the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Goa is a biodiversity hotspot with several national parks, offering visitors the chance to encounter wildlife including tigers and elephants while on a bike tour.

South Indian architecture, especially its temples are renowned the world over for their colorful design. South India is also a hub of handicrafts, and is especially known for its ornate textiles.

South Indian cuisine is very different from the north, and incorporates a wider range of spices and ingredients that grow in the tropical south. Seafood is also an important part of south Indian cuisine.

When cycling in south India, visitors are spoilt for choice. This is why we have over 12 tours in south India, and still feel we’ve barely scratched the surface of this beautiful region.

An off-beat cycling destination, Northeast India is the least urbanized and the least populated region of India. Most of it is hilly and covered with dense forests, and it retains much of its pristine, untouched character to this day.

Northeast India is primarily inhabited by tribal communities that have preserved their ancient tribal customs intact, thus offering the visitor a unique chance to interact with their distinct, yet welcoming culture.

The main cycling attractions in the northeast are Sikkim, a mountainous Buddhist province with gorgeous views of snow-clad Himalayan peaks including the Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world.

Assam is another popular cycling destination in northeast India. It is famous for its Assam tea, and as the home to the Kaziranga national park which has the largest population of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros in the world.

Meghalaya is yet another unspoiled destination which offers spectacular views of hills, valleys and rainforests. It is also home to Mawsynram/Cherrapunji, the wettest place on earth. Because of its misty mountains and crystal clear lakes, it is known as the Scotland of the East.

The Himalayas are the highest mountain range on earth, and about 30% of the Himalayan range falls in India.

One of the best places for a cycle tour in the Himalayas is Ladakh. It is a spectacularly barren plateau located some 3500m (12,000 ft) above the sea level that has retained much of its pristine beauty due to its remoteness and its harsh climate. However, Ladakh comes alive in the summer and offers spectacular views to cyclists. Due to its altitude, a cycling tour in Ladakh is recommended only for advanced cyclists.

Uttarakhand is another state nestled in the Himalayas which rewards the persevering cyclist with gorgeous views and beautiful rides. It is home to several colonial era hill stations such as Nainital, Mussoorie, Binsar, and Ranikhet.

It is also an excellent destination for wildlife lovers. The Jim Corbett and Rajaji National Parks in Uttarakhand offer excellent tiger sightings, besides being the northernmost habitat of the Indian elephant.

What Does a Day On Your Bicycle Tour in India Look Like?

At Art of Bicycle Trips, we believe in experiential travel. Our tours combine cycling with cultural activities and nature exploration.

An average day on tour includes 4-5 hours of biking, with the rest of the day reserved for local experiences such as exploring local attractions, interacting with local communities, visiting monuments and museums, learning local crafts, trying local cuisine and more.

Each guided India bike tour is led by an expert trip leader who is also a local. For groups of more than 4 members, we have 2 trip leaders to take care of our guests. ABT trip leaders are a repository of local knowledge, routes, customs, cultures, and cuisines. By employing only local guides, we also help generate employment opportunities for local communities.

All hotels on tour are carefully chosen for their character, comfort, and cuisine, and each hotel becomes an experience in itself that guests can enjoy.

A support vehicle accompanies guests at all times, and if at any point a rider does not feel like biking any further, they can always load their bike and sit in the support van.

We pride ourselves on the degree of customization we provide on each tour, and are always happy to accommodate any special requests from our guests relating to the tour.

What Kind of Bikes Are Provided On Your Bike Tour in India?

We provide the following kinds of bikes for our India bike tours:

1. Hybrid Bikes : Hybrid bikes are available for all our Rajasthan and South India cycling tours, and some tours in northeast India such as the Arunachal and Assam Bike Tour.

2. Gravel Bikes : Gravel bikes are available for specific tours such as the Mysore to Goa by Gravel Bike Tour, and the Coast to Coast Bike Tour.

3. Mountain Bikes : Mountain bikes are available for tours in high-altitude regions, such as the Splendid Sikkim Bike Tour, Enthralling Meghalaya Bike Tour, and High in the Himalayas Bike Tour.

4. E-bikes : All our tours are also available with e-bike upgrades.

All our bikes are of the latest make, well-maintained and in excellent condition.

What Types of Terrain Should I Expect When Biking in India?

1. Rajasthan : Rajasthan consists mostly of flat terrain interspersed with rolling hills and the occasional challenging but short climb. All our Rajasthan tours are classified as either Easy or Moderate , and are great as family cycling tours.

2. South India : South India has its fair share of hills. The steepest climbs are encountered around Ooty (2240m/7350 ft above the sea level) where gradients can be as steep as 12%. The majority of the terrain in our south India bike tours, however, is either flat or consists of rolling hills. Nearly all our south India bike tours are classified as Moderate or Easy to Moderate .

The Bangalore to Goa and the Kerala Backwaters Bike Tour are the exceptions as they consist almost entirely of flat terrain and are classified as Easy . They make for great family cycling tours.

India Bike Tours — Frequently Asked Questions

Is india safe for cycling.

Yes, India is a fairly safe country for cycling. As of January 2024, the United States Department of State classifies India as a Level 2 destination. This puts it in the same category as most West European countries including France, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, all of which are classified as Level 2 destinations.

In 2023, India welcomed over 1 million foreign tourists, placing it among the top 10 most visited countries in Asia. Several thousands of these tourists were cyclists, and it is not uncommon to meet other foreign cyclists when biking in India. Cycling is also popular as a means of transport among working class Indians.

However, just like in other low-income countries, petty crimes like theft and snatchings are not uncommon. This is why it is advised to do a guided bike tour in India where a local guide will be with you at all times to ensure your safety.

Is Biking Popular in India?

India is an emerging tourist destination for cycling. Even though millions of Indians still use bicycles for their everyday commutes, cycling as a sport and as a leisure activity has only picked up over the last decade or so.

However, more people are now realizing that India is a unique destination that offers experiences unmatched by any other destination in the world. As a result, cycling in India is increasing in popularity each year.

What Are the Rules for Cycling in India?

Here are a few rules to pay attention to when biking in India:

India is a left hand traffic (LHT) country, a practice common in countries that were formerly a part of the British empire. This means that when cycling in India, riders should stick to the left-side of the road.

Overtaking is done from the right, although cyclists should avoid overtaking as much as possible.

Always follow your trip leader or your support vehicle, whichever is in the lead.

Always wear a helmet while biking.

Use hand signals when turning

Be mindful of stray animals such as dogs, cows, water buffaloes, monkeys, and camels. (yes, India has plenty of these animals sharing the streets with commuters!)

Latin america, road cycling india coast to coast, about this cycle tour.

In just 11 days, cycle tour India from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea, pass through millennia of history, and watch the scenery change from shimmering sand to forested mountains, to tropical backwaters before your eyes. Not only is this bike tour an impressive achievement, but it's also a fascinating cycling holiday through one of India's most colourful cultural regions. Brimming with history, culture, cuisine, scenery, and challenge- this South India odyssey is a story-book ride for road cyclists.

Your bicycle tour of India begins in bustling Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, cycle south along the Bay of Bengal, steeped in colonial history. Head into the interior of the Indian sub-continent and experience the pace of South Indian life and culture as you ride through quaint farming villages and small towns adorned with ornate temples.

This cycling route explores ancient Madurai, one of the oldest cities in one of the world's oldest civilizations, before pressing on to the Western Ghat mountain range. Tough climbs are rewarded with cool mountain air and panoramic views of tea and spice country. Descend into the famously lush backwaters of Kerala and its many houseboats, fishing villages, and abundant wildlife, before meeting the shores of the Arabian Sea!

Day 2 - Mahabalipuram to Puducherry Ride 85km. +343m / -347m.

This is my second long tour with Spiceroads. Their tours are always well prepared and organized. Their guides take a safety first approach throughout the tour, whilst providing excellent guidance and information about the tour and also about culture and sights we see as we ride along. Oh yes, one more thing: the food on the tours is always awesome and plentiful..:)

Very impressive landscape, delicious food, and lovely people - I would absolutely recommend the cycling tour in South India!

Wonderful trip to experience southern India while riding on a bike. SpiceRoads took good care of us while we were on the road.

Activity Profile

What's included, what's excluded, trip profile.

This trip covers 758 kilometres in 8 cycling days, crossing the southern part of the Indian sub-continent. Daily distances are over 100 kilometres on paved roads, and while most are relatively flat, there are 2 challenging days of climbing in the Western Ghat mountains towards the end of the trip. Our route is scenic and full of variety as we ride from one coast to the other, through ancient civilizations, off-the-beaten-path farming communities, majestic mountains, and tropical backwaters.

Suitability: This trip is suitable for the experienced road cyclist, and those comfortable riding over 100 kilometres per day on back to back days. Climbing experience and a good cycling fitness will be helpful on days in the Western Ghat mountains, however, the support vehicle will always be nearby for those that need it.

Biking Conditions: This trip is on quiet, tarmac back roads in good condition. However, this is India! There may be sections of rough road and chaotic traffic in and around urban areas. Your local cycling guide will keep you aware of what's ahead, and the air-conditioned support vehicle will ride behind the entire way should you need a rest.

Day 1 Arrive in Chennai

Arrive in Chennai, formerly known as "Madras," and the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. A fascinating mix of modern and traditional, this Indian metropolis has plenty of cosmopolitan and historic diversions for visitors. Feel free to explore some of the city's many temples, colonial churches, museums, and more before meeting up at our hotel in the afternoon for a trip briefing. In the evening, our guide will welcome us to India in true Tamil style with a lavish dinner of South Indian cuisine!

Day 2 Mahabalipuram to Puducherry

Our first cycling day of the tour begins with an hour and a half transfer out of the urban sprawl of Chennai to Mahabalipuram, a coastal town famous for its ancient rock-cut monuments and temples that are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll have some time to peruse and admire some of these thousand-year-old relics before hopping on our bikes and enjoying the first ride of the trip! We'll make our way out of Mahabalipuram, inland and into the backroads of rural Tamil Nadu. The terrain is mostly flat as we pass through farmland and farming villages, dotted with colourful Hindu temples famous to the region. There's a short and gentle climb at the end of our ride before we reach the coastal town of Puducherry, a former French colony on the coast. Take a stroll to admire the uniquely French colonial architecture in this easy-going town before meeting the group for dinner.

cycling trips india

Day 3 Puducherry to Kumbakonam

It's time to break away from the Bay and Bengal and begin our journey to the other coast! We'll transfer out of Puducherry to begin our ride in the countryside. Though our ride today is long, the terrain is mostly flat like the previous day's ride, but the scenery is noticeably more lush, especially after we cross the Kollidam River. It's a pleasant ride, passing through small, but colourful Tamil villages with their many temples and the occasional church. We'll ride directly to our accommodation for the evening, a stunningly designed hotel showcasing traditional Indian and colonial architecture in a lush and serene setting. After the ride, you'll have time to enjoy the pleasant surroundings of the hotel, take a dip in the pool, or enjoy the Ayurvedic spa.

cycling trips india

Day 4 Kumbakonam to Pudukkottai

After breakfast, we head out from our pleasant hotel in Kumbakonam, riding east along the Kaveri River. It's a flat ride along the river for roughly 45 kilometres before we head south towards the town of Pudukkottai. There are some very gentle and gradual climbs before we reach our destination, but overall it's a pleasant ride through an area of Tamil Nadu that seldom sees foreign tourists- especially not cyclists! Enjoy the view of authentic South Indian life. After reaching our destination, you'll have time to freshen up and maybe take a short stroll through town before rejoining the group for dinner.

cycling trips india

Day 5 Pudukkottai to Madurai

Today we'll rise early to get a head start on the South Asian sun and heat. Our destination for the day: the ancient city of Madurai, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. After 4 days of cycling through Tamil Nadu, today's ride is an easy achievement. The ride begins with a fast and flat warm-up, followed by a gradual climb into gently undulating terrain at around 20 kilometres, passing through small towns and farming villages. We'll have a slow, several-kilometre climb as we pass by the Alagar Kovil Forest Reserve, before making a smooth descent into the city of Madurai. Our accommodation is a beautiful boutique hotel and centrally located for our day off the bikes for sightseeing tomorrow. Take a dip in the pool, sip a drink at the bar, or get some laundry done before rejoining the group in the evening for dinner.

cycling trips india

Day 6 Madurai Rest Day

Spend today out of the saddle and soaking up the experience of walking among the two-thousand-year-old streets of Madurai. One of the oldest cities in India, the history of this truly ancient metropolis speaks for itself with its towering temple complexes and monuments. After breakfast, we'll head out into the city to see some of the most famous sights, like the Meenakshi temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess of the same name, and adorned with thousands of colourfully painted sculptures. Your afternoon is free to continue exploring, and lunch and dinner are at your leisure. Your guide will be happy to provide suggestions, and you are also welcome to spend your day relaxing at the hotel. Be sure to rest well for a big day tomorrow!

Day 7 Madurai to Chinnakanal

After a day off the bikes, we're well-rested and ready for a big day in the foothills of the Western Ghats. We'll transfer out of the busy Madurai to our start point in the quiet villages just beyond the foothills of the Western Ghat mountains. The ride starts with a flat and steady warm-up for 40 kilometres as we head west- straight for the Ghats! Our journey is a long climb through the forested hills of Bodi Hill West Forest in the foothills of one of India's southern mountain ranges. The terrain can be quite tough, with short and steep ascents that build for 20 kilometres. Be sure to keep your bidon topped-up and take breaks when necessary, or just stop to admire the view. After we reach the top of the climb, we'll enjoy a nice downhill that takes us straight into Kerala Province. The last 10 kilometres are rolling hills, with a final steep ascent to our accommodation for the evening, situated firmly within the Western Ghats. Tonight we'll enjoy a hearty dinner to fuel up for a final day of riding in these impressive mountains!

cycling trips india

Day 8 Chinnakanal to Vagamon

We'll rise early to get a head start on the hills. Another day of climbing takes us deeper into the Western Ghats on winding mountain roads. We'll get a break from the South Indian heat, with cool mountain air and forested slopes offering some shade on our ride, especially as we skirt the edge of Mathikettan Skola National Park. Today's climbs are less gradual, and your legs will be tested on short but steep gradients, all the way up to our destination for the day- the hill station of Vagamon. Our accommodation for the evening is a cosy hotel with quiet and natural surroundings, the perfect place to get a good night's sleep after a challenging day!

cycling trips india

Day 9 Kolahalamedu to Kumarakom

We'll bid farewell to the Western Ghats on our ride today. The ride begins with a long and smooth descent out of the mountain resort area. Watch the scenery change from pine-lined ridges to tropical forest as we descend over 1,000 meters almost back to sea level- welcome to Kerala! After the descent, it's an undulating ride through the lush countryside of Kerala province. There are hills to watch out for, but nothing we won't be able to handle after our last two days of climbing! We'll pass through the town of Kottayam before a final stretch through the peaceful backwaters to Kumarakom, famous for its houseboat lifestyle and bird sanctuary. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at our resort, located on the shores of Vembanadu Lake.

cycling trips india

Day 10 Kumarakom to Kochi

Our final cycling day is a treat: a scenic ride through the serene backwaters of Kerala as we make our way to the Arabian Sea. The first half of our route takes us through lush coconut plantations and backwater fish farms tended by fisherman and stalked by a wide array of birdlife. The road is dotted with Christian Churches and local ladies in vibrantly coloured saris. Around halfway through our ride, we meet our goal- the sandy shores of our second coast! We'll stop for a beachside picnic lunch before completing our journey on a coastal road, all the way to Kochi. After checking into our cosy hotel in Kochi, you'll have time to pack up your bike, freshen up and enjoy the rooftop pool or go for a stroll through this laid back beach town before joining the group once again for a final South Indian feast. We'll trade stories and congratulate ourselves on the tremendous accomplishment of cycling through India from Coast to Coast!

cycling trips india

Day 11 Departure

After breakfast, you're free to explore Kochi or head to the airport for onward travel. We recommend extending your stay in charming Kochi or exploring more of Kerala and its scenic backwaters, and SpiceRoads will be happy to make the arrangements for you.

Disclaimer: The adventure cycling tours we operate often go beyond the beaten track, and the countries where we ride are not always predictable. Due to these reasons, it is occasionally necessary to reroute or update itineraries. Our guarantee is that we will not change a trip unless for safety or to improve it. Our listed hotels are always accurate at the time of writing, but should we have to change any hotel, it will always be for a similar or better one.

Nuts & Bolts

Because some people can't imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, we do not provide them as part of this tour. However, you can hire bikes locally for the price listed in the tour pricing section.

If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is in good mechanical order.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

The Nitty Gritty

Passports and visas.

There are no compulsory vaccinations although it is strongly recommended that you are vaccinated against Typhoid, and Hepatitis A and B. Tetanus and polio vaccinations should also be up to date at the time of travel. Please speak to your doctor/physician for the most recent information.

As India is such a large country, the climate and weather conditions vary across the vast region. However, the country is divided into six main climatic zones ranging from arid desert in the west, alpine tundra and glaciers in the north, and humid tropical in the southwest and the island territories.

We have tours in the following regions

Rajasthan: weather can be divided into four seasons - summer, monsoon, post-monsoon, and winter. Summer from April to June is the hottest season with temperatures ranging from 32C to 45C. Monsoon extends from July to September with a slight drop in temperature but plenty of rain. The post-monsoon period is from October to November where the lowest temperatures can reach as low as 18C. From December to March is the cold season and the best time to visit Rajasthan. Temperatures range from 15C-18C with little or no humidity.

Kerala: mostly has a tropical wet climate, which can be divided into three seasons. Summer is from February to May and is generally hot and humid. Monsoon season begins in June till around October or November. December to January holds the best weather for travel as it is cooler and the rains have subsided.

Leh/Ladakh has a cold desert like climate with somewhat extreme conditions. summers bring in harsh direct sunlight at such high altitudes while winters can get as cold as below freezing point. Lowest ever recorded was -23C. May to August is the best time for tourists to enjoy the weather and everything it has to offer.

Sikkim: has a very temperate climate with enjoyable 5 seasons. Depending on the location and altitude, the weather can vary. In Summer, the lowest temperatures reach 13C up to 28°C while in winter Temperature between 0C to 13C. The monsoon season hits around June to September.

Cycling the Himalayas: Selected Routes and Itineraries for Bikepacking India

Cycle touring the indian himalayas; manipur to ladakh by bike.

Let me take you on an unforgettable journey cycling the Himalayas. To the majestic landscapes of the far north of India.

In 2015, I cycled from Vietnam to the UK . During that time, I cycled a fair portion of northern India. Primarily the remote North East as I crossed from Myanmar into India.

Since then, I’ve been living in India seasonally in Goa. I chose to stay for the lockdown and consequently, had greater access to explore the country further.

At the tail-end of 2021, I cycled from Chandigarh to Leh, a long-held ambition to see more of the northwest of the country.

Cycling the Himalayas

This piece, Cycling the Himalayas, is intended to offer a broad insight into bikepacking India generally and bring the northern regions an up-to-date route itinerary for self-supported bike travel.

If you need it, here’s a ballpark cycle touring kit list, and you probably don’t need one for this trip, but here’s a selection of bikepacking tents .

I’ll start chronologically, from 2015 up to date which will take us neatly East to West across the north of India, with a mini hiking trip to Nepal in the middle.

My approach to long-distance bike travel tends towards the ‘screw it, let’s do it’ school of planning.

I’ll include details for altitude, distances and terrain where necessary but largely speaking, in 2023, most of India is accessible and in my experience, anything is possible.

Imphal to Cherrapunji by bike: Cycling the Himalayas in Remote North East India

The North East of India offers bikepacking expeditions that are full of surprises, challenges, and incredible encounters.

Much of the region’s roads are little more than gravel tracks, save the Assam, where there is pristine asphalt to extract the tea with a minimum of fuss.

Anywhere in Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh will yield a fine fix of gravel travel with the odd tribal encounter thrown in for good measure.

the road to mon; north east india by bike

The Challenging Route to Mon

It all started high above the town of Kiphire, where my cycling buddy, John, and I received a daunting warning about dangerous rebels and blocked roads.

But we were determined to explore the region, and the only direct road to Mon led us through this treacherous path.

We pushed forward on a rugged dirt track, tackling challenging terrains and facing scarce food supplies.

Along the way, we crossed paths with the Tikhir tribe and their blockade, but a brief negotiation and a secret route helped us break through the obstacles and reach our destination.

Experiencing Culture in Manipur

As we journeyed through Manipur, we stumbled upon the village of Lunghar. A sudden earthquake jolted us from our sleep in the guest house of the local Pastor.

But this was just the beginning of an incredible cultural experience. We attended the first church service of the year and were welcomed with open arms.

The legacy of Christian missionaries in the region was evident, as many locals spoke English and showed immense kindness, generosity, and warmth.

A Week with the Headhunters of Longwa

Finally, we reached Mon, and our adventure took an even more fascinating turn in the village of Longwa.

This place was unique as the international border divided it in two – the chief slept in Burma but took breakfast in India.

Our host for the week was Longshah, the junior village president, who also ran the only Homestay in Longwa .

During our stay, we had the humbling opportunity to attend the funeral of one of the last remaining headhunters.

Witnessing their traditions and history was truly a moving experience.

Cycling the Assam: A Break from the Mountains

A touch of media attention in assam.

At this point, John took a train to Kolkota. His trip coming to an end after three months cycling to the Himalayas.

I ventured onwards into Assam, my journey caught the attention of the local news channel, News Live.

I was interviewed about our motivations for this grand adventure. It was a moment of introspection as I tried to put into words the reasons behind our journey.

Later, as if the universe conspired to answer my thoughts, I encountered a pair of elephants by the roadside.

However, I couldn’t bring myself to ride them, knowing the mistreatment they often endure.

Exploring the Scotland of the East

In Meghalaya, I was awestruck by the natural beauty that surrounded us. Cherrapunji, known as the wettest place on Earth, was our ultimate destination.

The living root bridges and abundant waterfalls in this region were absolutely mesmerizing.

I dared to venture into the West Khasi Hills despite warnings of danger.

Surrounded by pristine nature and welcomed by kind families, I discovered the true essence of the Scotland of the East.

Cycling the Himalayas in remote North East India was an experience of a lifetime

As I reflect on my journey from Imphal to Cherrapunji, I’m overwhelmed by the incredible encounters, the breathtaking beauty of the region, and the kindness of the people we met along the way.

It’s moments like these that fuel my passion for adventure cycling and reminds me of the untamed beauty that lies waiting to be explored on two wheels.

Cycling from Meghalaya to Darjeeling

The next phase of this East-to-West bikepacking itinerary is an incredible journey from Meghalaya to Darjeeling.

Meghalaya is sandwiched between Bangladesh and the Brahmaputra River.

A little south of the Himalayas proper, this unique state of India is a rare and exotic place to visit for the intrepid cycle touring explorer.

Crossing the border at Tamu/Moreh

After a month in Myanmar, I enjoyed tea and puri at a chai stand in Moreh town, I unexpectedly met Jiles, a 21-year-old Belgian hitchhiker crossing the border from Myanmar to Manipur.

It was a pleasant surprise to find another traveller in these lesser-travelled regions of North East India .

Little did we know that this encounter was just the beginning of meeting like-minded adventurers on our respective journeys.

Cherrapunji’s Annual Feast

Arriving in Cherrapunji, known as one of the wettest places on Earth, I was recommended to see the living root bridges.

At By The Way hostel, we met Heprit, the owner with a striking resemblance to Robbie Coltrane.

My stay took an exciting turn when I again met Jiles and Thomas, a French vegetarian hiker.

Together, we experienced the joy and surprises of the annual feast in the village, complete with music contests, traditional songs, and a unique butchering ceremony for the feast.

The Road to Lava: Cycling the Himalayan foothills

My Indian bike adventure continued with a thrilling ride towards Lava.

The landscape was simply awe-inspiring – alpine forests, rivers cascading down deep valleys, and picturesque curves.

I camped with locals, shared music, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Exploring Gangtok by Bike

Reaching Sikkim, the smallest and cleanest Indian state, I had to obtain an Inner Line Permit .

Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, fascinated me with its modernity and vibrant culture. I met more fellow travellers, including Aga, Jack, and a Liverpudlian called Mike – the Indian Bill Oddy.

A day trip to Mangan and a visit to a Buddhist temple in north Sikkim enriched our experience further.

Riding the Steep Climb to Darjeeling

As I left Gangtok, I decided to test my strength and attempt the steep climb to Darjeeling. As you’d expect cycling the Himalayas, there are some rather epic ascents. This one was among the most memorable.

The road to Teesta provided breathtaking views and an adrenaline-pumping descent. However, the climb proved to be challenging, and a broken chain forced me to take a detour.

Thankfully, a friendly local named Rinchin came to my rescue and offered me a place to stay in his beautiful home nestled among tea estates.

Darjeeling Unlimited

The next morning, I woke up to a stunning sunrise over Darjeeling, a reward for my perseverance.

The journey had its ups and downs, but every encounter and experience made it truly special.

Cycling from Meghalaya to Darjeeling was an adventure beyond my imagination

From meeting fellow travellers and joining in the festivities of local communities to facing challenging climbs and enjoying the beauty of the Himalayas, every moment was a reminder of the joys and rewards of adventure cycling.

Walking the Himalayas

This trek was a fitting end to my four months of exploration in India and marked the beginning of my foot-based Himalayan escapades.

Before even starting the trek, I had an unforgettable experience near the Nepalese border patrol office in Bhimdatta.

I joined the locals for a refreshing dip in the Sharda Mahakali river, feeling the powerful flow cleanse my soul.

The porous Nepali/Indian borders make this remote crossing a bustling trade hub for the locals on both sides.

Trekking the Annapurna Circuit

The Annapurna Circuit is a challenging and rewarding adventure, and I was fortunate to meet some incredible people along the way.

I crossed paths with Patrick and Rachel , an American couple cycling around Southeast Asia on their anniversary trip.

It warmed my heart to hear their love story, and it gave me hope that romance could be found even on the road as a solo cyclist.

Not Cycling the Annapurna Circuit

Later, I encountered Chris and Isabella, a Polish couple who had just finished cycling the Annapurna Circuit, including the famous Thorung La pass at a staggering 5,416 meters.

Their enthusiasm was infectious, alas I decided to hike the circuit to experience one of the world’s best hiking trails fully.

I also spoke with my best buddy and tourer in crime, Adrian, having trekked the circuit some years earlier, he suggested the bike was a poor companion for the mission.

Setting out from Besi Sahar

The Annapurna Circuit offers a variety of landscapes, from alpine forests to grassy meadows and rocky valleys.

The trek to the pass was physically demanding but rewarding.

I formed a team – the Dream Team – with Ananda and Maarten, fellow trekkers, and together we pushed our limits and celebrated each milestone.

The day we reached the Thorung La pass was particularly memorable. The stunning views of Annapurna II and the surrounding peaks were awe-inspiring.

I was even surprised by a group of girls with their midriffs bearing the message, “Thorung La Pass 5,416m – James, you’re the man!”

It was a delightful surprise and added to the joy of reaching the pass.

We descended to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site, where we found solace at the Bob Marley Hotel.

There, we enjoyed good food, hot showers, and a celebratory night of camaraderie and laughter.

However, all good things must come to an end.

Straight Outta Jomsom

Time and finances were running out, so I had to part ways with my Dream Team and head to Jomsom to catch a bus back to Pokhara.

The journey was long and challenging, but every step of the way was worth it.

My adventure on the Annapurna Circuit came to a close, but the memories and friendships I made will stay with me forever.

The stunning landscapes, the physical challenges, and the camaraderie with fellow trekkers made this journey a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Now, as I sit here reminiscing about those incredible days on the Annapurna Circuit, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore the beauty of Nepal and the Himalayas.

If you ever get the chance to trek the Annapurna Circuit, I urge you to do it. It’s a life-changing experience that will fill your heart with joy, wonder, and a sense of accomplishment.

Manali to Leh Bike Trip: Bikepacking North West Indian Himalayas

The final section on Cycling the Himalayas is the most recent excursion; a Manali to Leh bike trip.

The adventure was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with breathtaking landscapes, challenging terrains, and unforgettable experiences.

Join me as I recount the highs and lows of this epic cycling expedition through the heart of the Indian Himalayas.

ascending from manali to marhi up the rohtang pass by bike

Setting Off from Chandigarh:

The journey began with a typical distraction as I needed to replace a snapped bungee right after getting off the train in Chandigarh.

Typical me, always finding some excuse to dawdle!

After pottering around the town, I finally hit the road around 1 pm, cruising along the wide boulevard-style streets of Chandigarh before heading towards the hills.

Cycling Across Himachal Pradesh:

As I pedalled through Himachal Pradesh, the landscape transformed into Big India – full of vibrant colours and endless possibilities.

The rain didn’t dampen my spirits, and despite some technical difficulties, I pushed on, embracing the immersive experience of being drenched to the bone.

The stunning ride made up for any inconvenience, and I found myself pushing through the treacherous conditions to reach Baddi in Himachal for a restful night.

cycling the himalayas: baralacha pass altitude 4850m

Cycling at Himalayan Altitude

On day three, I decided to take a bus to Manali to fix my rear calliper, ensuring a safe and enjoyable ride ahead.

The road was under construction, and I thanked my lucky stars for the decision. Cycling without a rear brake would have been foolish.

The scenic journey along the River Beas was a sight to behold, providing a glimpse of the majesty that awaited me.

Rejuvenated and Recharged

After a day of recuperation in Manali, my energy was renewed, and I set off towards Marhi, tackling a 5,000m mountain.

The climb was tough, but the picturesque scenery and the thrill of reaching the summit made it all worthwhile.

I met fellow cyclists along the way, making new connections and sharing the joy of the journey.

a light weight bikepacking set up is best for cycling indian himalayas

Biking into Ladakh

As I ventured further into Ladakh, the challenges escalated.

Altitude sickness and flu symptoms tested my resilience, but with determination, support from friends, and a support vehicle, I conquered the passes one by one.

The Gata Loops and Tanglang La tested my mettle, but the breathtaking views and the camaraderie with my cycling companion, Avinash, made it all unforgettable.

The Final Stretch to Leh

The last leg of the journey along the Indus River was awe-inspiring, with stunning landscapes and gompas dotting the route.

I reunited with Avinash in Leh, and we celebrated the achievement of crossing five of India’s highest passes with our trusty bicycles.

final road sign on the manali to leh bike trip

Manali to Leh By Bike

The Manali to Leh bike trip was a thrilling adventure of a lifetime.

The challenging terrains, the breathtaking scenery, and the camaraderie with fellow cyclists made it an experience to remember.

It’s a journey that tested my limits, pushed me to the edge, and rewarded me with unforgettable memories.

If you’re a bikepacking enthusiast looking for an epic adventure, I highly recommend embarking on this incredible Manali to Leh cycling expedition.

Join me this autumn on a guided bike tour across Ladakh!

Cycling in India

Do you ever feel you are going too fast on a trip to actually not see anything while you travel in India? That’s because you probably are. Indian cities are all about the kind of feelings they give you as you tour the place and there is nothing that will match the experience of a place through a cycle tour in India. The very essence of travel is all about seeing and taking in what people of a certain region do every day and the beautiful historical buildings you are to see, combined with the cultures and everyday life of India. So where can you go and what can you see? You can go cycling at the Divar and Chorao islands in north Goa, take a day tour of Mumbai, Wayanad, Udaipur, New Delhi, Manali, Rishikesh, Puri, Raghurajpur, Mahabalipuram, Agra etc. A great thing about cycling in a new place is that you can see the location on your google map and get going. You can explore the city or town at your own pace, without worrying about having to keep up your speed to match up with a schedule.

You can have a list of things you wish to see on a certain day and you can just get going on your cycle. Cycling is fun when it comes to hill stations. It is as much fun to cycle uphill as it is to do the same downhill. A cycle tour of places like Darjeeling, Manali, Kullu, Shimla, Dehradun, Srinagar etc give you a new perspective about life and people. You can carry your cycle along with you if you are going camping someplace on the mountains. You can then go cycling to nearby places and explore new places and people during your stay at the camp. A guide to cross-country cycling

47 days. That’s how long it took Ashish Jerry Choudhary to cycle all the way from India to Vietnam in a bid to promote environmental conservation. “I started off with short cycle tours from Delhi to Jhunjhunu, Jaisalmer, and Kanyakumari to Kashmir. The next goal for me was to go beyond the borders of India to undertake my biggest tour—cycling from India to Singapore,” he tells us. Curious about what it takes to cycle across the world? Read on.

‘Prepared myself physically before going on a long cycle tour ’

Hailing from Budania in Rajasthan, Jerry is currently on a cycle trip from India to Australia accompanied by his bicycle—Lilan—fondly named after the Rajasthani folk deity Veer Teja Ji’s beloved horse. Jerry talks to us about his physical prep before going on long tours and says, “I can withstand extreme temperatures thanks to my upbringing in Rajasthan. I also developed my physical capacity by trying different physical exercises like running, cycling, swimming, etc. I didn’t go on a long tour right away.” As far as getting the right cycle is concerned, he says, “I know people who’ve cycled across the country on simple single-gear cycles. You need grit to pull through once you start.”

“There will be days when you might sleep in wet clothes or on an empty stomach but you will also get to meet some of the best people, have good food, sleep in cosy and luxurious places. It’s all a part of the experience” — Ashish Jerry Choudhary

‘Be ready to face uncertainties’

“While cycling is a great way to travel, it requires you to be strong mentally and physically. You could feel hungry or have a water shortage at times when residential locations are too far apart. The weather may not always be favourable and you could end up not finding a place to camp before sunset. This is why, you need to carry all your essentials on you—food, water, tent, etc. I also carry solar panels and a water filter just in case. I also make it a point to never ride after dark and always find a place to camp while it's still bright so I know my surroundings,” shares Bhopal-based sustainability enthusiast Utkarsh Sethia who often goes long-distance cycling.

“When going to high-altitude areas, it’s best to take two or three days to acclimatise. You can travel solo when you’ve done enough trips but it always helps to travel with friends or in a group.” — Utkarsh Sethia

Carry necessary documents and keep them safe

Stay hydrated

Carry your medical kit

Try planning a tour when the weather is dry

Things to watch out for:

Water or food shortage—shops may be far apart

Rain for poor visibility and lack of shelter

Mountainous trails will require more strength and lung capacity

Keep these documents handy:

Photographs

Bank statement

Hotel booking details

Detailed Itinerary with hotel bookings

A letter specifying that you’re on a cycle tour with the destinations mentioned

“While any visa requires around $30 to $50, it’s always best to calculate your overall costs. Consider hotel bookings, food, medicines, and cycle parts when allotting a budget. Since I carry my tent, I camp in permitted spaces but you might have to pay to camp in some places. I currently spend approximately Rs 2500 per day that includes three meals” — Ashish Jerry Choudhary

Prep your bicycle before you head out:

Service your cycle regularly

Install a good-quality torch and backlight

Safety vest reflector

Biking gear

Carry weatherproof bag covers

Pack food, water, and essentials that you can find easily

Pack in a compact manner

Carry a camping stove and cylinder to cook your food

Keep power bars and fruits handy

Get a light backpacking tent

Portable water filter
