A Classic Cruise

The original Jungle Cruise opened on July 17, 1955 at Disneyland Park. Based on Disney’s award-winning True-Life Adventure films, the attraction had a more educational tone. In the early 1960s, Walt Disney introduced more drama and asked animator Marc Davis to sketch some humorous gags.

Over the years, more “wildlife”—and new wisecracks—were added. These updates, along with our talented skippers, make for fun surprises on every trip down the river.

Jungle Cruise

An Attraction in Disneyland

Last updated: November 12, 2023

At a Glance

As more technologically advanced attractions have been added to the park over the years, the Jungle Cruise has, by comparison, lost some of its luster. Though still a good attraction, it offers few thrills and no surprises for Disneyland Park veterans, many of whom can rattle off the ride’s narration right along with the guide. For park first-timers, however, the Jungle Cruise continues to delight. Jungle Cruise has received some updates in recent years, so it's worth riding again if you've skipped it during your last few visits. Gone are the culturally insensitive stereotypes. Instead playful monkeys in humorous situations have taken their place.

A family from Anacortes, Washington, has this to say about the queue:

Jungle Cruise’s line can be insanity-inducing long (as in the case of the Jingle Cruise). If the line goes upstairs, expect a very long wait through the grandfather of switchback queues. Nearly every time you expect the queue to turn around back to the ride, it continues into another room.

Jungle Cruise at Disneyland

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Disneyland's Jungle Cruise is — on the surface — a trip down a jungle river. Now here's where the Disney magic kicks in. In that one short trip, you'll see scenes which look like the Nile, Burma's Irrawaddy River, Cambodia's Mekong, and Africa's Congo.

But the real show here is the skippers, who are infamous for their never-ending stream of bad jokes and punny patter. Here's a sample: "Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please. Would the party that lost the roll of 50 $20.00 bills, wrapped in a red rubber band, please report to the turnstile … we have good news for you. We found your rubber band." Or the always punny: "And, of course, those are lions, ’cause if I called them anything else, I’d be lyin’.”

What You Need to Know About the Jungle Cruise Ride at Disneyland California

Betsy Malloy Photography

Even though it's a little corny, most Disneyland visitors say it's a don't-miss attraction and a Disney classic.

  • Location:  Jungle Cruise is in Adventureland.
  • Rating:  ★★★
  • Restrictions:   No height restrictions. Children under age seven years must be accompanied by a person who is 14 years or older.
  • Ride Time:   9 minutes
  • Recommended for:   Everyone
  • Fun Factor:  Medium, if you don't mind the bad jokes. Low if you don't like slow rides
  • Wait Factor:   Medium
  • Fear Factor:   Low
  • Herky-Jerky Factor:   Low, but once in awhile boats will bump into each other when approaching the unloading zone
  • Seating:  The ride vehicle is a boat. It has rows of bench seats facing the center. You step down from the dock to get into it.
  • Accessibility: If you're in a wheelchair, ask a Cast Member how to get in. You will have to go up and down a few steps to get on and off the boat. If you're in an ECV, you'll have to transfer to a wheelchair first, then to the ride.  More about visiting Disneyland in a wheelchair or ECV

How to Have More Fun

  • Younger children especially like this ride  during the day, but it seems a little scarier at night.
  • When the line splits, choose the left one. By doing that, you will get on the side of the boat that faces most of the scenery.
  • If you're  friendly with the skipper Cast Member , laugh at their jokes and chat them up, they're likely to be funnier.
  • The line at Jungle Cruise can be deceptive , making you think it's short when it isn't and luring you into a maze of queues that you may worry that you'll never escape. And happy that at least it's in the shade. Check a wait times app or ask a Cast Member if the wait time isn't posted.
  • Some people think the  Jungle Cruise one of the best things to do at Disneyland after dark .

You can  see all the Disneyland rides at a glance on the Disneyland ride sheet .

While you're thinking about rides, you should also  download the essential Disneyland apps (they're all free!) and  get some proven tips to minimize your Disneyland wait time .

The Disney Jungle Cruise was one of the original Disneyland attractions, introduced on Opening Day, 1955.

Disney Jungle Cruise is one of only three Disneyland attractions where a cast member rides with you (the others are Storyland Canal Boats and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes). It's also one of the few Disneyland rides that is not based on a Disney animated film, although you may notice that the boats resemble those from another studio's classic film "The African Queen" starring Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.

When the ride was in the planning stages, Walt Disney wanted to use live animals on the Jungle Cruise, but when he found out that many of them were nocturnal, Imagineers turned to mechanical ones instead.

"Weird Al" Yankovic wrote and recorded a song titled "Skipper Dan" about a failed actor who ended up as a guide on the Jungle Cruise, but sometimes those skippers often go on to bigger things. According to MentalFloss.com, famous wisecracking skippers include Kevin Costner, John Lasseter, and Richard Nixon's press secretary Ron Ziegler.

The water in the Jungle Cruise doesn't look dirty because of poor maintenance: Its clarity is deliberately reduced to obscure the boat's guidance system and other unsightly items.

Just outside the Jungle Cruise entrance, look for a large palm tree. It's the oldest thing in Disneyland and dates back to the late 1800s. When Walt Disney bought the Dominguez family's land for the park, they asked him to spare it. Disney obligated and moved the 15-ton plant from the parking lot area to its current location.

If you can't get enough of those wise-cracking skippers, check out  Skipper Show , which features stand-up comedy from a group of former cast members.

Is It Different than the Jungle Cruise in Florida?

The jokes are no better in California, and the only major difference is that the Anaheim ride doesn't have a cave section.

Jungle Cruise Entrance

Introduction | Attraction | Touring Tips | Kids/Characters | Dining | Shopping | Interesting Facts

INTRODUCTION

Take a boat cruise on the rivers of the world where you’ll see exotic animals, ancient ruins and somewhat restless natives. Your trip is narrated by a wise-cracking skipper – beware of puns and bad jokes. This is a classic Disneyland attraction and should not be missed. The Jungle Cruise is located in Adventureland between Aladdin’s Oasis and the Indiana Jones Adventure.

The queue winds through areas themed with 1930s travel memorabilia — travel trunks, posters, and even a newspaper announcing Indiana Jones’ find of a lost temple. Near the boarding area the queue splits, so make sure your group stays togther. Those who go left will board at the rear of the boat, and those who go right will board at the front.

A Cast Member will assist you as you step down into one of the canopied launches patterned after the boat in the movie The African Queen. The boats have names like “Congo Queen”, “Yangtze Lotus”, “Irrawady Woman”, and “Ganges Gal”, and each holds about 32 passengers.

Jungle Cruise Boat

Read about the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction HERE .

During the holiday season, the attraction becomes The Jingle Cruise . A shipment of holiday decorations was lost – and then found by the inhabitants of the jungle, with comic results. The skippers have a whole new seasonal holiday spiel. (Packages tied with a boa on top…)

TOURING TIPS

Animals at Jungle Cruise

The cruise takes on a whole different feel when ridden after dark — this is also a less crowded time to take the ride.

Wheelchair and ECV users should go in through the exit and must transfer into the boat to ride.

The nearest restrooms are located around the corner next to the Adventureland Bazaar.

KIDS AND CHARACTERS

This ride is appropriate for the entire family, though the jokes and puns will probably go over kids’ heads.

Disney Characters are typically not found in the Jungle Cruise, but Aladdin and Jasmine , and the Genie , occasionally make appearances outside Aladdin’s Oasis . Be sure to check the daily Times Guide for character appearances.

The Bengal Barbecue, serving a variety of grilled kabobs, is nearby. The River Belle Terrace is just around the corner.

INTERESTING FACTS

The first version of the Jungle Cruise was very serious, based on Walt Disney’s True Life Adventure series. It wasn’t until a few years later that the Jungle Cruise “skippers” began adding jokes and funny stories.

Walt Disney originally wanted to use live animals in the attraction.

The Jungle Cruise is an original Disneyland attraction and opened on July 17, 1955 . In honor of Disneyland’s 50th anniversary, one of the boats, the Congo Queen , was painted gold.

The water-churning piranhas and exploding barrels were added during a rehab in early 2005.

Highlighting Themed Experiences

Updated Jungle Cruise Opens at Disneyland

Walt Disney Imagineers completed a major refurbishment on Jungle Cruise, which reopened to guests today at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. Jungle Cruise is one of the original opening day attractions from Disneyland’s opening on July 17, 1955.

The ride underwent refurbishments to become more politically friendly with its depiction and diversity of characters. This opened up the opportunity to improve several other areas of the adventures as well.

Jungle Cruise – the Updates

Here are some of the updates to the new version of Jungle Cruise:

Chimpanzees have taken over the wrecked boat of a safari expedition on the world-famous Jungle Cruise at Disneyland Park. (Christian Thompson/Disneyland Resort)

The new scenes, backstory, and updated animatronics aim to create an enhanced story and guest experience.

“We’re excited to be building on the story of the Jungle Cruise to include new adventures that stay true to the experience we know and love, while adding more humor, more wildlife, and an interconnected story,” says Chris Beatty, a Walt Disney Imagineer who played a key role in the enhancements. “As part of creative development, we’ve also introduced characters from around the world and took a thoughtful approach to ensure accurate representation of cultures in our story.”

According to the new backstory, the team of explorers that set out for an unlucky expedition on the Mekong Maiden, are:

Major upgrades to original disneyland rides.

The Jungle Cruise isn’t the first original opening day ride to receive a major upgrade this year. In late April, Disneyland unveiled a refurbished Snow White dark ride that it now calls Snow White’s Enchanted Wish .

Updating rides and the park was always a vision of Disneyland’s founder, Walt Disney. He once famously said, “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is no imagination left in the world.”

Jungle Cruise: The Movie

Disney will be releasing the movie Jungle Cruise on July 30, 2021, in theaters and for a premium price on Disney+. The movie stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in the lead roles and is somewhat based on the Disneyland attraction.

Disney resisted the urge to incorporate the new movie into the classic ride. That wasn’t the case with Pirates of the Caribbean, which was updated to add Johnny Depp in multiple scenes based on his portrayal of Jack Sparrow in the movie series.

The Jungle Cruise movie is 2 hours and 7 minutes long. The movie’s premiere will take place at Disneyland on July 24, 2021.

Few rides are as beloved or unique as Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise . Sure, it may not be the most thrilling or exciting attraction at the original Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, but it sure is one of the most entertaining. Jungle Cruise was an opening day attraction in Disneyland, opening alongside Disneyland Park in 1955. The ride has entertained millions of guests since, becoming one of the most classic and iconic rides in all of The Walt Disney Company’s history.

The ride can be found all across the world, with locations like Disneyland Park at the Disneyland Resort, Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland. For those who haven’t been able to experience this incredibly fun ride, guests go aboard a boat as they embark on a journey through mysterious rivers, all of which are guided by a trusty Jungle Skipper. These versions are all fairly similar, though the version of Jungle Cruise found at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort features some impressive elements like massive flames.

Guests won’t find any flames over at the American Disney parks, but they will find other cool features.

These skippers provide most of the fun, telling jokes, making fun of themselves and guests, and poking fun at the ride itself. While the attraction does feature some incredible theming, as well as some lovely animatronics, the main reason guests want to experience Jungle Cruise is for these skippers. You never know what they may do or so, with each Disney cast member offering their own personality to the mix.

Unfortunately, this ride has been offline and unavailable for multiple days for guests visiting the Disneyland Resort.

Guests checking the Disneyland website or the Disneyland app on their smartphone will notice that Jungle Cruise is currently closed and has been for quite some time. While the cause of this closure has not been confirmed, we expect it has something to do with the incident that happened earlier this week. There are a lot of ways Disney’s Jungle Cruise can go wrong, though most of these are intended. From large flames engulfing jagged rocks to sunken boats and monkeys shooting guns at guests like in the header for this story, the Jungle Cruise is a wild ride, even though it’s incredibly slow. However, what happened earlier this week truly was shocking.

A shocking video was shared online of a Jungle Cruise boat getting stuck in the water. The only way to rescue the guests and cast members aboard was for other employees to pull and guide the boat as it got towed by a boat in front of it. Eventually, the boat was able to dock, and guests were able to safely exit the ride. It’s quite possible this is the cause of the attraction’s unexpected downtime and refurbishment, and we truly hope that it returns very soon.

It’s possible that this boat is not the actual reason the ride is closed, and it’s something entirely different. Several guests have noticed there are now tarps and scrims surrounding the exterior of Jungle Cruise, as you can see in the Reddit post below:

Current Jungle Cruise Status (11/3) by u/Sloth_Dream-King in Disneyland

Surprisingly, this is far from the first time we’ve seen a Disney boat ride get stuck like this. Over the last few years, several viral videos have popped up online, showing the various ways guests can get stuck at Disney, as well as the various ways Disney park employees can help rescue the trapped guests.

We’ve seen brave employees wade into the actual waters of Pirates of the Caribbean and “it’s a small world” to help rescue guests, and we could not be more grateful for the excellent service from these employees.

Typically, when guests are evacuated from a ride or attraction at the Disney theme parks, they are granted a pass they can use to bypass the standby queue for other rides and attractions. This helps make up for the negative experience and lost time.

Have you ever had to evacuate a Disney theme park ride or attraction? Do you enjoy Jungle Cruise?

The One Ride You Should NEVER Rope Drop in Magic Kingdom

By Jordan-Paige Sudduth Leave a Comment

Magic Kingdom is one of, if not THE busiest Disney World park on most days.

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Magic Kingdom

It’s also home to the most attractions, even though it’s the smallest park. Rope dropping Magic Kingdom is a great way to get a head start on your day and experience some of the most popular attractions at lower waits, BUT there are some rides that we absolutely do NOT recommend running to during rope drop — know them now so you don’t make the same mistakes we have in the past!

If You Have Kids

If you’re traveling with kids, specifically younger kids, in your group, it will affect what you’re able to ride all together due to height requirements. In this case, we do NOT recommend rope dropping Space Mountain due to that aforementioned height requirement, AND the fact that this ride is a nearly pitch black roller coaster!

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Space Mountain

Lots of kids aren’t fans of roller coasters, or if they are, they want to be able to see where they’re going. On Space Mountain, that’s not the case — you literally have no idea where you’re going at any given time , until you’ve ridden the ride enough to kinda have gotten the feel of the track.

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Instead, we personally recommend rope dropping Peter Pan’s Flight or Jungle Cruise , as both rides have no height requirement and get very long lines later in the day!

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Peter Pan’s Flight

However, if a lot of your party really wants to ride Space Mountain with each other, but you can’t leave a child alone by themselves outside, this is where Rider Switch comes into play ! Rider Switch allows for the people in the party riding to wait in line normally while one adult stays outside with the child/person who doesn’t want to ride. When the rest of the party gets through the line, one adult can swap places with the adult outside and ride the ride again with one person who’s already ridden (or they can go by themselves) without having to wait in the standard queue again. So let’s say you have a couple traveling with their 10-year-old and 5-year-old kids. While one parent waits in a special area with the 5-year-old, the other parent rides with the 10-year-old. Then, the parents can switch, so that the other parent can ride without waiting in line again.

If You’re Focusing on Thrill Rides

While there aren’t many true thrill rides in Magic Kingdom, there are a few! If you’re a big fan of these heart-pumping rides, then we don’t recommend rope dropping Peter Pan’s Flight, even if you would like to ride it during the day. Why? Well, because you should be prioritizing those thrill rides and only getting to Peter Pan’s Flight if you have time! That way, you’re not disappointed in how your day turns out.

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

While it’s true that the line for Peter Pan’s Flight will go up throughout the day, it’s rarely a walk-on at rope drop due to early entry crowds, so you may regret waiting 20 minutes in line for it while you COULD have just walked on a less popular ride. Instead, we recommend rope dropping Space Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (heavy emphasis on this one, as it’s not open during early entry, so you genuinely could be one of the first people to ride it that day)!

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

However, some of the most thrilling rides are found over in EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios , so make sure you include those in your trip plans as well!

If You’re There For Early Entry

Early Entry is a special perk all Disney World hotel guests receive on each day of their trip. You can enter any Disney World park you’d like 30 minutes before the park officially opens! However, not all the lands in Magic Kingdom are open for early entry, which is why rope dropping Jungle Cruise is a terrible idea.

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Jungle Cruise

That’s right, Adventureland isn’t open during early entry, so rope dropping Jungle Cruise or Pirates of the Caribbean just won’t happen. Fantasyland and Tomorrowland are the only two lands that are open during this half hour, so we recommend rope dropping Space Mountain or Peter Pan’s Flight (yes, they’re decently far from each other, but you COULD hit both in the same half hour if you’re lucky)!

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

If you aren’t staying at a Disney World hotel though, not to worry — there’s still plenty you can experience rope dropping regular park open!

If You’re Unsure About Thrill Rides

If you’re not sure if you’re going to like thrill rides, we don’t recommend rope dropping and starting your day with Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. This is one of the most popular rides in the park, and it’s great to use early entry for NORMALLY, but if you’re nervous about thrill rides for whatever reason, the last thing you want is to start off your trip with it, have it NOT go well, and then the rest of your day is ruined.

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

This also goes for those who don’t like heights! While Seven Dwarfs Mine Train isn’t super high, someone who isn’t a fan of heights may feel some panic when riding. Instead, we recommend rope dropping Jungle Cruise or Peter Pan’s Flight , as both are closer to the ground and much less thrilling (we mean, the backside of water is pretty high intensity, but it’s easier to handle 😉).

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Overall, Magic Kingdom is a great park for kids or adults who aren’t a fan of thrill rides, as there are no rides that go upside down, and only a handful that are considered TRUE thrill rides. There’s plenty for everyone to enjoy!

If You’re Wanting To Rope Drop Tiana’s Bayou Adventure or TRON Lightcycle / Run

If you’re looking to rope drop Tiana’s Bayou Adventure or TRON Lightcycle / Run — DON’T. Why? Well, because you can’t.

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opens for guests on June 28th and will only be available via Genie+ or a Virtual Queue . TRON Lightcycle / Run on the other hand has been open for over a year, but can only be ridden by getting a spot in the Virtual Queue or with an Individual Lightning Lane .

jungle cruise ride at disneyland california

TRON Lightcycle / Run at night

This means that you’ll want to “rope drop” grabbing a Lightning Lane or Individual Lightning Lane for these attractions, yes, or be up right at 7AM or 1PM to grab a spot in the Virtual Queue , but physically getting in a standby rope drop line won’t be an option for quite some time. If that changes though, we’ll be the first to let you know, so stay tuned to DFB!
