Coldplay is one of the best-loved British rock bands in the world, with numerous tours, top sellers and awards to their name. Formed in 1996, the band's original line-up comprised Chris Martin, the lead vocalist, and Jonny Buckland, the lead guitarist, who met at University College in London. Originally the band was called Pectoralz, which later became Starfish after the bassist, Guy Berryman, joined along with drummer Will Champion, who also plays multiple instruments and provides backing vocals. The band finally decided on the new name Coldplay in the same year that they recorded and released their first three EPs: Safety, released in 1998, the single “Brothers and Sisters,” released a year later and “The Blue Room,” also released in 1999. This last single was the band's first major label release with Parlophone. Collaborations include recordings with Jay Z, Nelly Furtado and Rihanna, and the band have also said that Travis were a major influence on their early work, along with Muse, Kate Bush, George Harrison and Echo and the Bunnymen. Later influences include Arcade Fire and My Bloody Valentine. It was their single “Yellow” released in 2000, that launched the band to instant international acclaim, and their debut album, Parachutes, followed later that year, receiving Mercury Prize nominations. Coldplay's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, released in 2002, also received widespread critical praise and won a range of awards, including the prestigious Album of the Year award from NME. The next album release was X & Y, which was also well received, and the fourth album release was Viva la Vida, or Death and All His Friends in 2008, which earned them a number of wins at the Grammy Awards. Their fifth album, Mylo Xyloto was a chart topper in 34 countries. The band has also won a large number of awards, including seven Grammys, five MTV Music Awards, and eight BRITs, with over 25 nominations in all. Coldplay have sold over 60 million records across the world and have toured extensively across Europe, the Americas, Australia, Asia and Africa. They also strongly support a range of political and social causes and have performed extensively in charity concerts, including Live 8, the Teenage Cancer Trust, Band Aid 20, Hope for Haiti Now, Sound Relieve and the Secret Policeman's Ball.

SUSTAINABILITY PLAN ‘A WORK IN PROGRESS’
SHOW POWERED BY 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY
PLEDGE TO CUT TOUR EMISSIONS BY 50%
ONE TREE PLANTED FOR EVERY TICKET SOLD
In 2019, Coldplay committed to making their future tours as environmentally beneficial as possible , and today’s announcement is accompanied by a comprehensive set of sustainability initiatives and environmental commitments.
Full details can be seen at coldplay.com/sustainability , including commitments to:
- cut direct emissions by 50% compared to the band’s most recent tour (2016-17).
- power the show entirely by renewable, super-low emission energy – with solar installations at every venue, waste cooking oil, a kinetic stadium floor and kinetic bikes powered by fans. This power will be stored in the first ever mobile, rechargeable show battery (made from recyclable BMW i3 batteries).
- draw down significantly more CO2 than the tour produces with a range of nature- and technology-based solutions, including planting one tree for every ticket sold.
- provide each venue with a sustainability rider requesting best environmental practices.
- encourage fans to use low carbon transport to and from shows via the official tour app built by SAP, rewarding those who do with a discount at venues.
- ensure all merchandise is sustainably and ethically sourced.
- offer free drinking water and strive to eliminate plastic bottles at every venue.
- put 10% of all earnings into a fund for environmental and socially-conscious causes, including ClientEarth, One Tree Planted and The Ocean Cleanup.
- establish a partnership with climate change experts at Imperial College London’s Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment to quantify the impact of the tour – both positively and negatively – on the environment
- together with Green Nation, Live Nation’s sustainability platform, Coldplay will be a special artist advisor, ensuring the sustainable practices developed on this tour are shared, adopted and scaled through the rest of the live touring industry.

Coldplay said:
“Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together.
At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far.
If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Recent tour reviews
I had always heard Coldplay were a fantastic band to see live. They did not disappoint last night at Fedex Field, right in the midst of their joyous and decidedly over-the-top Head Full of Dreams tour.
The show began with an explosion of color and light (including the LED wristbands supplied to every concertgoer) in the titular track on the band's touring album. Then came fan-favorite "Yellow," followed by "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," the ever-popular "The Scientist," and "Birds" (the latter was a bit of a personal disappointment as it replaced the brilliant "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from recent setlists). This part of the show finished with the anthem "Paradise," featuring an incredible remix outro.
Next the show slowed down for an intimate trio of songs (most of us actually took a seat). This included one of the better tracks from the sub-par "Ghost Stories", "Magic."
Soon, however, things picked up with the timeless piano strokes of "Clocks," themed to a magical red light show. Next came the lighthearted "Charlie Brown." Before it began, lead singer Chris Martin asked everyone to put away their phones and simply enjoy the show. This was followed by the radio hit "Hymn for the Weekend," a candlelit (okay...Iphone flashlight lit) "Fix You," and "Viva la Vida." This last one was remarkable, as nearly the entire stadium knew the lyrics and sang along to the triumphant "Oh-oh-ohhhh" chant. The groovy "Adventure of a Lifetime" finished off this section, featuring Chris gettin' down with the audience, asking everyone to "Get low!"
Then came the highlight of the night for me: an acoustic quad of older (*cough* better *cough*) Coldplay songs which were as intimate as they were nostalgic. The lovely riffs of "In my Place" started off the set. "Don't Panic" was sung by drummer Will Champion; it's one of my favorites. But it couldn't top what was (for me) the best song of the night: "Trouble." Somber but beautiful in its own way, "Trouble" is a rare find in the setlists of today's Coldplay and was absolutely fantastic. Finally came another rare gem: "Green Eyes," which was somewhat marred by Chris's well-intentioned attempt at giving the local Redskins some luck (HA! what folly) by changing the lyrics.
The finale of the show was the hopeful and popular trio of "Something Just like This," "A Sky Full of Stars," and "Up and Up." This last track was played against the backdrop of the magical and visually stunning music video for the song.
And if there were two adjectives to sum up the show as a whole, they would be just that: magical and visually stunning. Thanks for an awesome show, Coldplay!

First of all I need to just say wow! Wow! Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest nights of my life. Yesterday I really did feel like I was part of something special, something so big and beautiful. The love, the happiness and the excaitment people were feeling last night were something you can't put words on. We stood in the rain for so many hours, we sat in a que and then we stood in the rain again.. but let me just say that when Coldplay came on stage they put on the best god damn show ever. You could really feel their thankfulness during the show. They promised us (in Chris Martins own words) "The best fucking show ever" and let me tell you it was! During the night I got to experience people from different countries dancing and singing along together, I got to experience that moment when Chris decided to write a new song about Sweden and Gothenburg! The night was amazing in so many ways. And just as he said during the night, that he believes when people are working together and last night everybody in that arena stood together. We celebrated the music, the evening and most of all we celebrated the love. Because in the end of the day Love is what matters and it will always win.
Yesterday was beautiful, just pure beautiful!
A Coldplay concert is a real face to face experience for a someone who love their songs. It may not be an intimate experience but considering the legions of fans that they have only a concert can accommodate everyone who are waiting all their lives for a chance to hear them live. and they never disappoint. A total performance complete with lasers and light and firework BUT without much fanfare, just them singing & playing their hearts OUT song after song alone or in harmony with the fans some crying, most gleefully dancing to their upbeat song or swaying OR slow dancing to slow Fix You or Yellow and probably thinking of someone they "cannot replace". Chris Martin is an awesome guy and so are the rest of the band. May their personal lives be as awesome as their professional lives, they deserve that too. as to Singapore, it may not be as engaging as it would be in the Philippines but hey, no one can complain; i had the best time celebrating my birthday in one of the best stadium this side of town with around 50K Coldpay fans celebrating with me :) :). Long live Coldplay, may you continue to bring joy to you fans worldwide. Looking forward to another Coldplay concert experience in the future.

Coldplay famously declined to tour in support of Everyday Life for environmental reasons. Why has it never been cool to like Coldplay?
After nearly 25 years in the spotlight, and despite extraordinary success, coldplay remain the world's most divisive band.
In the year 2000, the music executive and critic Alan McGee wrote an indictment of Coldplay so cutting the band haven’t shaken it in almost 25 years. The Mercury Prize shortlist that year was, he thought, lacking in “characters”. He wanted charisma, he wanted rock ’n’ roll. But he was disappointed. “Top of Mercury’s list is Coldplay: bedwetters’ music.”
The observation, astute and savage in equal measure, has haunted the band ever since. But those two words barely make a dent in what they’ve achieved: a solid two-and-a-half decades of consistent global success, with nine albums, eight world tours and an unfathomable fortune.
Tonight, they will headline Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and in June they will headline Glastonbury for the fifth time. All these commercial wins before even mentioning the innumerable weddings, funerals, heartbreaks and celebrations they have soundtracked, and the thousands of fans who credit their music with expanding their souls, calming their thoughts and, in some cases, saving their lives.
Never has a band been the subject of so much simultaneous derision and adoration. McGee’s comment, though unfortunately catchy, was a symptom, not the cause. It has never been cool to like Coldplay. Nor is it cool to be Coldplay. But when faced with a Coldplay song, or a Coldplay show, their talent and emotional power are undeniable.
From their 1999 breakout “Yellow” to the megahit “Clocks” (2002) to “Viva la Vida” (2008) and “Paradise” (2011), and collaborations with the likes of Rihanna and Selena Gomez, Chris Martin et al have turned out hit after hit, show after show, attracting millions of fans from around the world. Their Music of the Spheres tour in 2021 is the third highest-grossing concert run of all time at $811m (£637m) (behind Taylor Swift’s Eras and Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road ); it was attended by 7.6 million people. So why, despite this undeniable talent and resonance, are they still categorised as a little bit embarrassing?
Coldplay met and formed at university in the late 90s, the tail end of the Britpop era. They began making music that straddled those muddy ballads and the more sad, soaring stuff that would come in the 2000s – well-constructed, contemplative, mid-tempo songs, by white men with big feelings. The simple, visceral beauty of “Yellow” turned to the melancholic piano of “The Scientist” (2002), which eventually gave way to “Fix You”, their monumentally famous 2005 ballad. It’s heartwrenching stuff – “Tears stream down your face/I promise you I will learn from my mistakes” – bolstered by Martin’s tender falsetto, and has now been played almost 1.5 billion times on Spotify.
Unlike Britpop, which was with its working-class, gritty credentials (McGee, for what it’s worth, was the executive who signed Oasis) a genre practically defined by its harnessing of “cool”, Coldplay were clean-cut and wholesome. They weren’t unemotional – but they were seemingly untouched by hardship or darkness. Despite Martin’s duly shaved head and the band’s sporting of baggy trousers and tatty T-shirts, this wasn’t Cool Britannia, let alone sex and drugs: it was four guys from UCL, whose frontman had a first in Latin and Greek.
In those early years, Coldplay were often compared to Radiohead, who were also signed with Parlophone. Now, you might balk at the comparison – but in the falsetto vocal, the driving choruses, the gut-punch of emotion, you can see it (Radiohead were also, as it happens, privately educated).
Swifties: it’s time to quit the detective work
But what Thom Yorke and his bandmates lacked in bloke-down-the-pub energy they made up for in gritty darkness. “I’m a creep/I’m a weirdo” went the title refrain for their 1992 breakout hit – while Coldplay basked in much sunnier climes. “Look at the stars/Look how they shine for you”, went “Yellow” (don’t pretend you’re not singing the melody as you read those words). It’s got melodic longing, but the lyrics are dewy-eyed enough to be on an advert – a major red flag for all self-respecting creeps and weirdos. “Clocks”, the band’s 2002 single that overexposed them to the point of spoil, was a little less saccharine – there’s strong tides, tigers, confusion and disease – but it all ends happily ever after: “You are/Home, home where I wanted to go”. As much as you could add one per cent more anguish and happily hear it crooned by Yorke, it’s also four stools and a hand-held mic away from being Take That .
Even outside their lyrics, Coldplay have always projected a relentlessly positive message that both bolsters their popularity – who doesn’t want to feel good at a concert? – and sharpens their critics’ tongues. Since 2011’s Mylo Xyloto , their stadium shows have often been rainbow themed, with light shows and pyrotechnics. That album’s tour was the first large-scale use of “Xylobands”, LED wristbands that can change colour or flash according to radio signal instructions. At the concerts, the audience, wearing the wristbands, would inadvertently create a light show – a warm and fuzzy bonding experience and a visual perfect for the increasing frequency with which people were posting photos of their lives to the internet. Coldplay still use them at shows to this day.
What’s not to like? Well, isn’t it all a bit… nice? Warm and wet? It’s certainly not rock ’n’ roll, which requires hatred of yourself (Yorke) and/or other people (the Gallaghers). Even the end of Martin’s marriage was a beautiful beam of opportunity; if it was a rock star move to marry Gwyneth Paltrow, a Hollywood actress, in 2003, the effect was scuppered by her characterising their split as a “conscious uncoupling” for her wellness brand, Goop , 11 years later. Beginning a new chapter and reflecting on your partnership may be good for your mental health, but it doesn’t exactly carry the anguished romance of, say, Nicks and Buckingham.
One reason all this live-laugh-loving fuels scorn is that it signifies some kind of inauthenticity: that Coldplay are hiding something. British audiences in particular simply do not believe that things could be this good – or, if they do, they resent you for it (incidentally, Coldplay have found enormous success in the US, unlike, for example, Oasis). This feels a little unfair. Notwithstanding the unquestioning devotion of “Yellow”, Coldplay do address complex and negative emotions in their lyrics and the overall sense of the music, which is a soft, symphonic stadium rock, is one of profundity. It’s tear-jerking, heartwarming and faith-in-humanity restoring – but it’s not cynical or manipulative.
Glastonbury line-up revealed as female artists lead headline acts
Coldplay are not without self-awareness, either. They know they’re not “cool”. (“I always thought that if you were a 16-year-old and liked Coldplay you’d keep it quiet,” Martin told the Telegraph in 2008.) Rather than attempt to pander to their dissenters, they have, wisely, let their popularity speak for itself. But for a Gen-X band of British guys, mainstream success is also part of their reputational problem – from the beginning, and “Clocks” in particular, they have blared in every shop and on Radio 1 near constantly (despite long outgrowing that station’s target audience); they have been ubiquitous at festivals (including that lauded Glastonbury headline slot) and awards ceremonies. And the simple fact of their popularity, by bedwetters or otherwise, is enough for a rock snob to turn up their nose. At least Radiohead have had the good sense not to make an album for almost a decade, lest too many normies find out about them.
Coldplay’s popularity partly derives from their genre-straddling, which makes them near-universally listenable. As they’ve evolved they have been commercially savvy, harnessing the industry and involving collaborators. If a greater sense of struggle or more nebulous authenticity might have tipped them into rock star territory, there’s no reason that their stadium-filling abilities, their understanding of what makes people happy, and their knack for a good hook shouldn’t make them pop.
The Guardian ’s Ben Beaumont-Thomas wrote in 2019 that they were the “world’s weirdest pop band” – and more radical than they are given credit for. This is much more fitting characterisation than their being some watered-down version of grimy rockers. Their instrumental offering has expanded over the course of their career (think of the soaring strings of “Viva La Vida”), including a pivot in the past few years to synthy pop: 2017’s “Something Just Like This” is a tour-de-force of a pop song, headed by them and the all-American, all-commercial Chainsmokers. Their most recent album, 2021’s Music of the Spheres , was produced by the Swedish pop kingmaker Max Martin – the same man who wrote “Oops I Did It Again”.
Harry Styles is the perfect male pop star in 2023 - apart from his music
Can we, as a culture, ever appreciate them without sliding back into snobbery? Surely we should: adaptability, an unrecognisable sound and essence, timeless songs that cut right to the heart of a feeling – it’s not to be sniffed at. Few artists can speak of such consistent success and longevity. Coldplay’s festival headline slots this summer are not as a legacy act but as contemporary artists – who happen to be Russell Group graduates in their late 40s, beloved by dads.
But the bulletproof songwriting and the visceral punch of feeling when you hear the opening chords to “Viva La Vida” are accompanied by a sense of eye-rolling loveliness and unwavering sincerity. We look to pop music, and art in general, to help us understand or externalise our own feelings; there is nothing thorny enough here for Coldplay to “comfort the disturbed”, and certainly not to “disturb the comfortable”. Rather, Coldplay comfort the comfortable – a concept not enormously appealing to those of us in the “disturbed” camp.
And if this makes you feel defensive, of either your unwavering love for Coldplay or coldblooded hatred of them, try to remember that it all comes down to perspective. For some, yellow seems like the most vibrant colour imaginable – for others, it’s a particularly garish shade of beige.

Griff on supporting Taylor Swift at Wembley: “Eight-year-old me wouldn’t believe this”
She also spoke to NME about her “heartbroken but euphoric” debut album ‘Vertigo’ and collaborating with Coldplay’s Chris Martin
Griff has spoken to NME about collaborating with Coldplay ‘s Chris Martin, and how opening for Taylor Swift at Wembley Stadium will be “one of the most surreal things in my career”.
- READ MORE: On the cover – Griff comes back down to earth
The singer-songwriter was talking to NME backstage at BBC Radio One’s Big Weekend, where she spoke of how much she was looking forward to the Eras Tour stop in the capital on June 22.
“Eight-year-old me who had ‘Fearless’ on repeat wouldn’t believe this,” she said. “I’m unbelievably grateful to Taylor for all the love she’s shown me and my music.”
It comes after Swift posted about Griff’s track ‘Vertigo ’ on her Instagram last year.
“That was very surreal,” Griff told NME . “I was at home seeing my parents, sitting at the dinner table, and not on my phone. Then, when I went on my phone, there were so many notifications but I didn’t know what it was.
She continued: “I had to scroll right to the bottom where it said ‘Taylor Swift has mentioned you in her story’. It’s just so wild that she would even share my music because she never posts and she didn’t have to do that.”

Looking ahead to her debut album ‘Vertigo’, Griff described the record as “heartbroken but also euphoric” and cited Enya as a key influence.
“There’s a sense of ethereal euphoria in her music and I would describe my album as heartbroken but also euphoric,” she said. “When you hear ‘Miss Me Too’, ‘Cycles’ and ‘Vertigo’, especially, there’s this journey of sadness but also euphoria.”
The BRITs Rising Star award winner added that she chose the title ‘Vertigo’ “because all the songs have been written from an emotional sense of vertigo, and heartache and sadness often feels like that.”
“I hope there are songs on it that people will really resonate with,” she added.
Having written 100 songs for the album, she said the “14 that made it are the ones I’m still listening to and am moved by.
“They mean so much to me, and I feel like I’ve written some of my best songs for this album,” she went on. “I’m really proud of it.”
Talking about the sound and songwriting process behind the record, she said: “I haven’t overthought the genre of things, I just love writing emotional pop songs.
“I’ve been really intentional about all the lyrics and concepts and the way I’ve communicated all these different emotions on the album. I think it’s a level up, because there’s so much to say.”
She said that she referenced a lot of hip-hop beats and drum productions while making the album, and that one of the new songs, ‘Cycles’ – produced by Mura Masa – is “a different sound for me”.
As well as supporting Coldplay on their European stadium tour earlier this year (which she described their show as “the best live show I’ve ever seen”), Griff collaborated with frontman Chris Martin on her song ‘Astronaut’, which she called “the most surreal moment of my life.”
“He’s the best songwriter of our generation so it was crazy to be on tour with him, and for him to be generous enough to listen to my songs,” said Griff. “He gave me some advice and ended up playing piano on it.”
Looking ahead 2024 world tour, Griff said: “It’s going to be a busy year.
“I’m so excited for Ally Pally – that feels like a crazy thing to say. I want to create a safe space for people to come, really enjoy the music, feel things and hopefully find something unique about my show.”

Watch: Coldplay paid tribute to Luton with a new song, Orange

- Updated 27 May 2024
Coldplay thrilled fans with a special song called Orange dedicated to Luton Town Football Club during its set at Radio 1's Big Weekend.
The group, fronted by Chris Martin, headlined the festival at Stockwood Park, in Luton.
There had been a campaign by local football fans for the group to change the lyrics of its song Yellow to Orange. Instead Martin performed an ode to the town.
It referenced the Hatters playing in orange, with the team's arch rivals Watford in yellow.
Chris Martin dedicated a song to Luton Town FC at the end of his performance
During the performance, Martin told the audience to "trust" him and to "relax" as he approached the end of the set.
Before playing Yellow, Martin said the track had "nothing to do with Luton".
"If you're from Luton, I'm going to ask you to just suspend your anger or fears or anything you might be worried about at this point in our concert of what songs we might play or might not play," he said.
He then explained to the crowd that he had heard people in Luton might be concerned if he sang Yellow.

"It reached me a while ago," he said, "that there were some people in Luton who were worried or disgruntled and maybe even angry about the concept of our band coming here and singing a song called Yellow because... of the Hatters and Kenilworth Road and the Luton Town Football Club."
Martin said that as he has grown older he has learned that if people "come at you with hatred and aggression" you can respond with "love".
After performing Yellow, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin told the crowd: "Thank you so much for singing the song Yellow even though it went against all of your principles"
To huge cheers, he introduced the new song he said he had finished in his hotel room the night before.
He called it a "once-in-a-lifetime thing" - and said it "may not be good enough" to be heard again.
The Hatters were relegated from the Premier League this season and the song opened with the lyric: "It's hard to be a football fan here in Luton Town."
'The most beautiful night of my life
And Martin went on: "We didn't win all our matches, we didn't win the cup.
"But when you get knocked down in Luton, you always get back up.
"So you can come in singing Yellow, that's all right with me, I prefer a warmer colour spelt o-r-a-n-g-e."
Martin burst into a chorus of "I love you Luton", then added there was "no disrespect to Watford".
Martina Skalecki and her boyfriend watched Coldplay in Luton
BBC Three Counties radio presenter Justin Dealey, who started the campaign to change Yellow to Orange, alongside Luton resident Bex Jones , said: "I knew something special was coming."
Martina Skalecki who was born in Luton and watched Coldplay with her boyfriend, described it as "the most beautiful night of my life".
"The song he played at the end for Luton was epic," she added.
"I literally can't get over that, it was beautiful scenes, it was so lovely."
Bhajan said the new song was "unbelievable"
Luton fan Bhajan admitted he did not know about the campaign to change the song lyrics to yellow but said it “made sense” considering the Watford rivalry.
He said: “When I found out he made that new song 'Orange' for us, that is unbelievable”
Another fan, who was wearing an orange Luton shirt, joined his family in singing the lyrics, with one expressing shock that “Coldplay said Luton”.

Chris Martin gives a Coldplay fan who was ‘struggling to walk’ a ride to his show
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin proved his commitment to his fans last weekend.
Saundra Glenn, a 64-year-old from Luton, England, tells TODAY.com that she had been trying to use the accessibility entrance at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend due to her osteoarthritis and joint issues when she was met with long lines and several obstacles May 26.
Glenn says she was "struggling to walk" and ultimately decided to watch Coldplay from home due to her condition. That's when Martin's car pulled up and a woman offered her a ride, Glenn says.
“The door was automated, and there was Chris Martin sitting there,” Glenn says. “And I recognized him from feet away and I said, ‘Oh, that’s Chris Martin! I can’t get in a car with him!’ He said, ‘Yes, you can come on in.’”
During their ride into the venue, Glenn says they discussed her advocacy work in Luton, Martin's performance, aging and relationships, among other topics.
The 64-year-old later shared a selfie of her and Martin in the backseat of the car to X , which sent his fan base abuzz due to her tweet seemingly referring to the singer’s relationship status.
"That moment when Chris Martin @Coldplay saw me struggling to walk, had his car stop and gave me a lift," she wrote. "Blooming amazing. Can’t believe this happened."
"What a decent bloke. We had a nice chat too. He is single and likes #Luton," she added of Martin, who’s been romantically linked to Dakota Johnson since 2017.
On social media, fans questioned whether the tweet suggested Martin and Johnson ended their relationship. However, Glenn clarified the remark to TODAY.com.
“I looked at him and said, ‘You’ve got a French wife,’ and he said, ‘I haven’t.’ I said, ‘Yeah, you got a French wife. I read it in the papers. I don’t know, I must be having a senior moment. I thought you had a French wife.’ He said, ‘No, I’m single,’” Glenn says of their conversation.
“When he said he was single, it was just because he was answering my question,” she adds.
After their ride, Glenn says the two went their separate ways — he to the stage to headline the festival, and she to watch from the audience. She noted, though, that Martin instructed his team to ensure she was dropped off where she needed to be.
“(Martin’s team) said, ‘Oh, yes, sure. We’ll take care of it.’ And they said, ‘Come into this buggy,’” Glenn says. “And the golf buggy said ‘artist’ on the front.”
Glenn describes Martin as down-to-earth, empathetic and says being a celebrity "hasn't gone to his head." She says she hopes the story leads more people to choose acts of kindness.
“This is what I think is heartwarming. It’s lovely. And if more people want to do more of that kind of thing, to me, it’s just a good thing because happiness makes you smile. There’s a little joy,” she says, adding her newly-coined hashtag, “#BeMoreLikeChrisMartin.”

The Wedding Singer Takes a Celebrity Turn
To delight their guests, couples are booking musical headliners to give surprise performances at their weddings.
By Stephanie Cain
Wendy Mazur said her “jaw hit the floor” when she saw her favorite pop singer, Goldford, walk out with his guitar during her first dance with Jerry Bedwell at their wedding in April 2022.
The couple considered the ballad “Upside Down” their song and had made it the theme of their reception at City Winery in Nashville. Their guest book, for example, was a custom puzzle of the “Upside Down” cover art.
Mr. Bedwell, 55, who works in information technology, surprised Ms. Mazur, 47, by hiring the musician to perform the love song live.
“I still get teary-eyed thinking about what Jerry did for me, making Goldford part of our wedding day,” said Ms. Mazur, a technology consultant and freelance writer. “What a loving surprise he gave me.”
Instead of opting for a simple recording for the first dance or a playlist for the after-party, some couples are splurging on surprise performers — Broadway stars, singer-songwriters, Grammy Award-winning acts — for their weddings, treating friends and family members to unexpected, meaningful experiences.
Celebrity performances at weddings have recently made headlines: In April, Ankur Jain, the chief executive of Bilt Rewards, a loyalty rewards company, arranged to have the singer Robin Thicke and the electric violinist Lindsey Stirling for his wedding in Cairo to Erika Hammond, a wrestler with World Wrestling Entertainment.
For Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s recent pre-wedding celebration in Jamnagar, India, Rihanna took the stage, as well as the Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. Mariah Carey sang her top hits for the fashion retail executive Umar Kamani and the model Nada Adelle at their wedding reception in Antibes, France, in May.
“A surprise headliner is not something the majority of guests have ever experienced before, even if they have been to dozens of weddings,” said Tracy Taylor Ward, an event planner in New York who most recently worked with Flo Rida for a wedding performance. “It’s incredibly memorable and fun.”
Booking a headliner isn’t cheap: The vendor can cost anywhere from thousands of dollars to $3 million, Ms. Ward said. A top name like Rihanna or Lady Gaga could fetch up to $5 million, said Josh Friedman, the owner of Élan Artists, an entertainment services company in New York that books performers for weddings, among other events.
More couples have requested well-known musical acts over the last decade, Mr. Friedman said, with a greater spike after the Covid-19 pandemic. Popular requests, he said, include John Mayer, John Legend, Flo Rida, Maroon 5, Zac Brown Band and Andrea Bocelli.
Marshall Weinstein, who runs the event production agency SET Artist Management, worked with Ms. Ward to surprise his wife, Ariel Moses, with a performance by one of her favorite artists, Mr. Cheeks, at their wedding reception in February 2016 at Gotham Hall in New York.
He thought it would be a playful “throwback moment” to have Mr. Cheeks rap his 2001 hit, “Lights, Camera, Action.”
“The look on her face was priceless — that’s why I did it,” Mr. Weinstein said of Ms. Moses, a publicist. “I would do it a thousand times over again.”
The cost for Mr. Weinstein for Mr. Cheeks’s one-song performance: around $10,000.
Mr. Friedman divides headliners into two categories: slow background music for a ceremony, dinner or first dance, and upbeat party tunes for a reception or after-party. He has coordinated a range of acts: John Mayer to perform “Daughters” for a father-daughter dance; Lady Gaga to sing jazz renditions of her hits during dinner; and Pitbull to kick off late-night, high-energy dancing.
He recommended that couples not only think about their favorite musicians, but also consider what would fit the crowd and the destination. He suggested Shaggy for island weddings and Mr. Bocelli for weddings in Italy. If couples want a dance party, he recommends Ne-Yo or Flo Rida, who both have cross-generational hits. For couples with smaller budgets, he might consider hiring a tenor from the Los Angeles Opera or a Broadway star — just not Idina Menzel, he said. (The range for so-called megastars is $150,000 to $250,000.)
Keeping the crowd top of mind, Eddie Kay, 41, who works in computer engineering, and Alex Zhou, 32, who recently earned her Ph.D. in economics, hired the singer Katherine Ho to perform in English and Mandarin for their wedding in Saratoga, Calif., in April. Ms. Ho is known for her Mandarin cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow” in the film “Crazy Rich Asians,” and Mr. Kay felt that the performance would be welcomed by their Chinese family members in attendance, many of whom didn’t speak English.
Evan Ross Katz, 35, a writer and podcaster, and Billy Jacobson, 30, an engineer, wanted someone “iconic” for their May nuptials in New York. So the couple booked Mandy Moore , who performed her love song from 2000, “I Wanna Be With You,” as well as her top hit, “Candy,” as guests took to the dance floor.
When hiring a music star, couples need to factor in expenses like travel, accommodations, meals, production equipment and even green room requests, which can add to the overall cost, said Jordan Kahn, who owns a namesake music company in Dallas. A headliner’s tour schedule, the wedding location and the number of songs performed can all increase the price as well, he said. It’s also rarely just the headliner whom couples have to consider: They may need to cover the costs for security teams, managers, assistants and other members of the entourage.
A cottage industry has emerged as vendors seek to help couples navigate the process. Music companies that supply D.J.s and wedding bands, like Mr. Kahn’s company and Élan Artists, often serve as the liaisons between talent managers and couples to secure talent and produce the final show.
Rachel Dalton, the president of a namesake production company in New York, helps couples negotiate and finalize contracts with talent using her background as an entertainment lawyer. Her team also personally escorts the performer to and from the venue and ensures that every technical requirement is met. Her production firm has worked with such names as Chris Stapleton, Alicia Keys and the Rolling Stones.
“Everything must be in the artist’s agreement so the couple is protected,” Ms. Dalton said. “It’s a real investment and must be treated as such.”
When David Levy, 29, the royalties manager for a music company, booked Derek Sanders of Mayday Parade to perform three songs during his wedding in Brooklyn in May with Megan Carty, 29, a pharmacist, he also hired a sound engineer and a D.J. to meet equipment needs and make sure that the day-of logistics ran smoothly.
Mr. Sanders sang “Miserable at Best,” one of Ms. Carty’s favorite songs, for the couple’s first dance, followed by two other hits, “I Swear This Time I Mean It” and “Your Song.”
“Derek didn’t just sing and leave — he hung around and took photos with our guests,” Mr. Levy said. “He signed our guest book. He had conversations with us. He was so kind.”
Many musicians enjoy performing at weddings and will often include a meet-and-greet with guests as part of the performance package.
“This is not a corporate event for a faceless company, nor is it a concert,” said Jay Siegan, who books 200 weddings a year with headliners like Celine Dion, the Killers and the Wu-Tang Clan, through his company, Jay Siegan Presents, based in Santa Barbara, Calif.
“This is the singular most important event of someone’s life,” he said.
