Pendapatannya melonjak 24 persen YoY menjadi 17,15 miliar yuan.

Ballarat council union members to take protected industrial action for White Night cultural event

Craig's Hotel Ballarat in lights for White Night Ballarat.

Major cultural event White Night and Ballarat residents's bin night will be targeted by industrial action as council workers ramp up pressure for a better pay deal.

Australian Services Union (ASU) members have been taking smaller protected action at Ballarat City Council for the past three weeks, including handing out warnings instead of parking tickets.

They voted this week to escalate action, including during Ballarat's White Night on Saturday.

The immersive art experience features musicians, food and cultural celebrations.

The 2019 event drew in more than 40,000 visitors.

ASU workers said an offer from council of a 10.5 per cent pay rise over the next three years was not in-line with the cost of living.

They have asked for a 17 per-cent rise over that period, which was rejected by the council.

ASU Victoria and Tasmania branch secretary Tash Wark said members at Ballarat council felt devalued by the offer put forward by the council.

"Our members have been bargaining with council for a really extended period," Ms Wark said.

"Their last pay rise was due in September last year."

Money in budget

Ms Wark said members were dissatisfied, especially after the release of the council's draft budget.

She said members wanted funds to be diverted from certain capital works projects to support them.

"We know that there is money in the budget," Ms Wark said.

"What council has done instead is to allocate that money to resolve their own debt towards capital projects, and resurfacing a hockey pitch.

"[That's] rather than pay workers fairly, which is wrong."

A Ballarat City Council spokesperson said it would be financially irresponsible to fund an increase in wages out of one-off savings such as the capital projects.

"The City of Ballarat acknowledges the right of its employees who are ASU members to take protected industrial action," the spokesperson said.

"It is important to understand that of the 1,100 employees of the City of Ballarat, only 205 are members of the ASU. Only ASU members are able to take protected industrial action."

They said the proposed enterprise agreement of 10.5 per-cent included back pay to last September.

"The wage increase in the proposed new enterprise agreement is a leading offer among local government in Victoria," the spokesperson said.
