Guide To Choosing The Best Bag For Traveling Japan
Key Takeaways:
- The best luggage for Japan travel is the one that’s easily carried, such as a wheeled backpack or a wheeled duffel bag.
- Train stations in Japan have a lot of stairs. Be ready to carry your bags quickly.
- Japanese trains don’t have space for bulky luggage. Large-sized luggage is also very bothersome to local commuters.
- Elevators and platforms are mainly reserved for the elderly, disabled, pregnant, and families with strollers in Japan. As a tourist, and if you’re none of those, you are expected to take the stairs (politeness is essential in Japan).
- Pack light ! This avoids your dependence on large-sized coin lockers, which are very limited in number despite the demand from less prepared tourists. Travel with a carry-on if possible.
The worst type of Travel Bag to bring in Japan
The worst type of travel bag to use in Japan are those large-sized 4-wheeled spinner suitcases. They are very bulky, wide, and tough to carry when taking the stairs and escalators at train stations. Japanese train stations surprised us a lot during our early days of living and traveling in Japan. Many train and subway stations are packed with people, and large baggage is quite challenging to navigate with.
In major cities, almost all have elevators. However, we find it generally inappropriate to use as they’re designed to be used by elderly and disabled commuters. Hence, it isn’t very comfortable to line up. That large-sized 4-wheel suitcase that you have will undoubtedly cause significant inconveniences, not just for you but also for Japanese commuters.
What Luggage size should I bring to Japan?
Each luggage piece must be under 250 cm (98 inches) of the total height, width, and length and with a maximum weight of 30kg (66 lbs).
Best Travel Bags for Japan
The ideal way to travel is to keep everything to one bag per person, or one extra large bag if you’re a family traveling with a baby. Travel with a carry-on if possible. Those staying longer in Japan opt for bags with a bit more space, not additional luggage. Before packing, I recommend evaluating what is needed for your trip to keep everything to just one piece of luggage. Read our packing list and tips here .
Here are the best luggage bags we recommend for your trip to Japan:
1. Wheeled Backpack
Wheeled backpacks are designed for maximum convenience and have a narrower profile than a typical large-sized 4-wheeled spinner suitcase. It’s perfect for those who have heavy items and plans to travel extensively in Japan. This type is beneficial for those who have the JR Pass, as you’ll need a bag that’s easily backpackable, and the wheels are a nice bonus should you get a bit tired from carrying it. Deuter HELION and Osprey Meridian are some the bestselling wheeled backpacks.
2. Wheeled Duffel Bag
Wheeled duffel bags are when traveling in Japan for two weeks or more. They are best for those who need maximum storage space, making them very useful if you’re traveling with kids or as a family. Just like the wheeled backpacks, these types of luggage are much narrower. They can usually be stored on the overhead luggage rack of Japanese trains. Thule Subterra , Thule Crossover 2 , Osprey SOJOURN are some of the bestselling wheeled duffel bags. Thule brand is known for high sturdiness and durability.
3. Backpacking Backpack
If you’re joining multi-day tours or pilgrimage excursions in Japan, then you’re going to need something that’s just a backpack. Wheeled luggage won’t stand the road, so you’re going to need backpacking designed for prolonged wear, comfort, and offer enough storage for a couple of days’ worth of clothes. Deuter FUTURA VARIO , Osprey Farpoint Trekpack , and Osprey Atmos AG 65 Backpack are some of the bestselling backpacks worth checking out, which are known for being durable and weather-resistant.
Additional Packing Tips for Japan Travel
- Bring a spare duffel bag . If you’re like us, then you’re probably looking to bring home souvenirs from your trip. This is where a packable duffle bag comes in handy. My husband is a hoarder of Japanese food during travel, like local versions of cup noodles and instant noodles, milk teas, and chuhais (a flavored white liquor). Keeping these extra bags with us allows us to use them specifically for these souvenirs.
- Use packing cubes . Packing cubes are the single best investment we’ve ever made in travel. We bought a set several years ago and haven’t traveled without them since. Packing cubes serve the purpose of organizing, separating, and compressing your clothes. You’d be amazed at how much more you can fit into your 60L bag with proper organization. We have two different colored sets, which lets us quickly distinguish whose bags are whose. If traveling in the winter (or if you want more space), consider using compression packing cubes . They’re perfect for sweaters and down jackets, which are notorious space hogs.
Bullet Train (Shinkansen): Luggage Rules and Tips
If you’re going to ride bullet trains in Japan, it’s important to know how to properly store your bags and luggage properly.
1. Dedicated luggage storage space.
Some bullet trains have a dedicated luggage storage space. However, the official rules only allow you to store two pieces of luggage in this storage space. There’s a competition to get this space during peak season, and a train attendant will label your luggage matching it against your shinkansen ticket. If they find a piece of unlabeled or unattended baggage, they will remove it and drop it off at the next station!
2. Storage space behind the last row seats. There’s also extra storage space behind the seats of the last row.
For security reasons and convenience, only the passengers sitting in the last row seats are supposed to use it.
May 2020 New Rule: For storage space behind the last row seats, starting in May 2020 those looking to travel with oversized luggage, with overall dimensions over 160 cm/62 inches, on the Tokaido Shinkansen will need to reserve specific seats to store them. According to the JR website , you may still travel on the train without a reservation. Still, they will charge you an additional ¥1,000 fee for each bag, and the luggage will need to be stored in a space designated by the conductor. This new rule does not apply to musical instruments, sports equipment, wheelchairs, or strollers, but finding storage for these things can be a bit difficult.
3. Overhead rack. For luggage smaller than 160 cm — roughly the same size as carry-on luggage on a plane– you can make use of the overhead storage rack. If the train is incredibly crowded, this space can be at a premium, which is another good reason for compact luggage while traveling in Japan.
4. In front of your legs. As I said, the overhead rack could fill up pretty fast, and there is no space beneath the seats for luggage. In this case, you’ll be forced to keep the bags on your lap or in front of your legs. Fortunately, the legroom is spacious in a shinkansen. Still, keeping your luggage there may make your ride a bit uncomfortable if you have larger bags.
Note: If you’re getting close to your destination station, you must stand up to prepare to get your luggage. Japanese people move fast , and the trains are on strict schedules, so you need to pay attention to get off the train quickly, or the door will close on you, causing a ton of problems.
Japanese Secret to Traveling Luggage Free
If you’re an observer like me, you’ll notice that Japanese people seem to travel nearly luggage free to and from the airport. That’s because they utilize a service called Ta-Q-Bin , a luggage forwarding service. How does this work? You drop off your luggage at the “hands-free” counter in an airport, 7-Eleven, or your hotel concierge, and have it forwarded to your next destination. Delivery is usually within 1-2 days.
Bottom Line
There are plenty of other excellent travel bag options out there, but these are the ones that stand out to us as being perfect for Japan travel. This list may change in the future as new bags are released, but for now, I hope you find this information helpful in your decision-making process

A Kyoto Travel Guide
The Best Luggage for Japan
The right kind of luggage allows you to take advantage of Japan’s unique travel system: ultra-fast shinkansen (bullet trains) that lack much luggage space, and incredibly efficient (and cheap) overnight luggage delivery services. Here are all the details.
The Takeaway
- There’s not much room for luggage on the shinkansen.
- Japan has excellent, cheap and reliable overnight luggage shipping services.
- You can ship your luggage from the airport to your hotel, or from hotel to hotel (city to city).
- You need a two-piece luggage system to take advantage of this.
- The system consists of a day bag and a wheelie suitcase or backpack.
- Parents traveling with infants and toddlers may want special luggage, which we discuss at the end of this article.
Whatever You Do, Travel Light!
Unless you intend to do an activity that requires very specific gear, such as rock climbing, skiing or diving, you don’t need to bring much stuff to Japan. Three or four days of clothes is plenty, as long as you plan to stay in hotels with laundry facilities. Of course, you don’t want to dress like a slob, but smart casual wear is fine for even nicer restaurants. And outside of northern Honshu and Hokkaido, it doesn’t get that cold in winter (think of Washington DC or Paris in winter). And, of course, if you forget something, you can always buy it in Japan (Uniclo is a great source of cheap but nice clothing, including outerwear). So you don’t need a big suitcase!
Shinkansen Have Very Limited Luggage Space
You’ll probably do most of your long-distance travel in Japan on the shinkansen (bullet trains). They’re fast, comfortable and nearly always on time. However, they have very limited space for luggage. There’s a rack above the seats that can fit – at most – the kind of bag that would fit in an overhead compartment on a plane. Here’s a picture:
There’s a bit more space behind the last row of seats in every car, but you have to buy a special ticket to use this space in all the reserved cars. You don’t need such a ticket in the unreserved cars, but that space goes quickly in those cars. Here’s a picture:
Japan’s Awesome Overnight Luggage Delivery Services
Japan has a network of luggage delivery systems that is one of the wonders of the world. They’ll ship your luggage around the main islands of Japan, usually overnight, and for around US$20 for a standard suitcase. Many people use the system to ship their bags from their arrival airport to their first hotel in Japan. Then, they use the service to ship their bags from hotel to hotel. Best of all, the service is utterly reliable: we’ve never heard of them damaging or losing a bag, or even being late! Hotel front desks will usually handle all the paperwork, but you can ship things yourself from convenience stores (or pick it up at a convenience store). For more on this, see Luggage Shipping: The Smart Way to Travel in Japan .
You Need a Two-Piece Luggage System in Japan
In order to take advantage of Japan’s shinkansen and luggage delivery system, you need a two-piece luggage system.
First, you need a small-ish bag to carry with you when you travel city to city on the shinkansen. You’ll use this to carry things you need during the day and things you cannot afford to lose. This might include travel documents, chargers, medicine, your phone, your computer (if you’re bringing one), and perhaps some outerwear. Since you’ll probably also use this bag when you’re out sightseeing, it should be comfortable and light. Here’s a picture of me with my day bag waiting to board the shinkansen in Tokyo. Believe me: It feels great to get on the shinkansen with nothing but a light day bag!
The bag I use in Japan is a Kingsons Laptop Backpack . I first saw one of these bags when I was on the Kumano Kodo trek. A fellow trekker was using it as his backpack on the trek and he loved it. It’s the perfect pack for Japan: it looks good enough to bring to a business meeting but it can also double as a knapsack for a hike in the hills. I often use it for overnight trips to Tokyo from my base in Kyoto. Amazingly, they only cost US$50 on Amazon.
Next, you need a small suitcase or wheelie bag . You’ll use this bag to carry the bulk of your things. The ideal size is 40 to 60 litres of capacity. It should just about fit into the overhead bin of a plane. I like the convenience of a bag that has straps that can be tucked away when not in use. This allows me to put the bag on my back for longer walks to train stations and hotels, but it’s not essential. Here are some things to look out for:
- Straps that go all the way around the bag: Straps that are only attached by an inch or so of stitching to the body of the bag will simply tear off the bag.
- Rubber wheels with strong mountings: These will handle a variety of surfaces without breaking. Little plastic wheels and mountings will fail within a year of use.
- Simple design with minimal bells and whistles: Extra pockets, zippers, covers and compartments all add weight to your bag. You can always use stuff sacks or cubes in the main compartment to organize your stuff.
Luggage and Strollers for Those Traveling with Infants or Toddlers
Those with tots in tow should consider bringing special items to Japan. A folding stroller is nearly essential you’ve got a toddler and very handy with an infant (unless you prefer a sling). We like the Babyzen Yoyo 2 stroller , which weighs 5.8 kg (13 pounds) and folds to 52 x 44 x 18 cm (20.5 x 17.3 x 7.1 in), so it’s small enough to carry onto most planes. This stroller can carry kids up to 22 kg (48 pounds). A stroller can be a real lifesaver when you’re out sightseeing and your young one needs a nap or just a break from walking.
If your kids are old enough to carry their own suitcase, you might consider a ride-on suitcase which kids can propel themselves with their feet, or you can pull with a strap. We like the Jet Kids ride-on suitcase by Stokke . One nice feature of these suitcases is that they are small enough to fit into the overhead bins on most planes.

Best Luggage To Bring On Your Trip To Japan (How To Avoid Rookie Mistakes)
Packing for a trip can be a stressful and often exhausting endeavor, but it’s one we must all undertake when we’re traveling. It’s good to know about where you’re traveling, and what modes of transportation you’ll be using.
One thing to keep in mind when determining how to pack for your trip to Japan is what methods you’ll be using to travel throughout the country.
Furthermore, you want to take it into consideration whether or not you’re visiting one spot in Japan, or if you’re wanting to take a longer trip throughout different regions of the country .
If you want to avoid your luggage getting in the way of enjoying your exploration of Japan, keep these tips in mind to avoid some rookie mistakes.
Condense What You Bring
One benefit of traveling to Japan is, based on the season, the weather can be pretty moderate. Thus, you can easily check the forecast before packing, and there’s less of a chance you’ll need multiple seasonal items.
You’ll want comfortable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Try packing items that you can wear in multiple ways for multiple occasions.
If you’re going to be in Japan for an extended period, consider finding a laundromat near where you’re staying so you can wash your clothes instead of packing more.
Consider Your Itinerary When Packing
If you plan to travel through forests and go on multiple hikes, you probably don’t need formal wear. If you are going to be walking throughout various Japanese cities , one or two pairs of walking shoes should be enough.
Pack for what you know you’re going to do, not what you think might happen. That way, you have enough room for souvenirs or anything you need to buy last minute while in Japan.
Make a list of what you need to bring in terms of clothes, shoes, and toiletries, and stick to your list when packing. Be sure to triple check your list while comparing it to what’s in your suitcase.
You can also consider an organizing system like packing cubes if you have trouble getting all of your necessary items into your luggage. These will help create more space by condensing your softer items, so you can get away with packing a little bit more than you need.
Keep Shopping In Mind
You’re going to want to buy a lot of things when you’re in Japan . Remember this when you’re packing what items you’re going to bring, as well as when picking your luggage.
Keep in mind that you’ll be able to find the same amenities in Japan that you can in other countries, and you will be able to easily find clothing stores or convenience stores for those things you forgot or didn’t have space for.
Don’t Use Large, Bulky Suitcases
If you’re going to be traveling throughout Japan on a bus or train and need to bring your luggage with you, you don’t want to bring a large bulky suitcase that is hard to move around.
These will get in the way of passengers on crowded public transportation.
Opt for softer duffel bags or a backpack that will still protect your belongings, but won’t easily break or get knocked around by other passengers.
They are also easier to carry when you’re using escalators and stairs, which you’ll use often if you’re using trains to get through Japan.
How Much Luggage Is Enough?
If you can condense your packing to one carry-on and one large duffel bag or soft suitcase that isn’t too wide or bulky, you should be fine.
If you know you’re going to want to bring a lot of souvenirs home, consider packing an extra bag within your bag. It’s much easier to only carry around extra luggage on your way home than it is throughout your journey across Japan.
Look For A Wheeled Backpack
If carrying a duffel will be too much strain on your back, a wheeled backpack can be a nice alternative. They are spacious without the added bulk, and they can be worn on the back when needed or rolled around.
Look For A Wheeled Duffel Bag
If you need the extra space a duffel bag offers, there are wheeled options. They can be wheeled upright, making it easy to balance a duffel bag if it’s in the upright position to leave room for more passengers on a bus or train.
Much like the wheeled backpack, a wheeled duffel bag lets you wear it on your shoulder if you want to carry it, but it can also be rolled around when your back gets too tired.
Bringing Luggage On Trains
The train system in Japan is fantastic, and there’s a good chance you’ll be riding one if you don’t plan on staying in one city for the duration of your trip. If you plan to stay in multiple cities, you’ll be bringing your luggage on the train with you.
There are a few different options for storing your luggage on the train so you don’t have to hold it, but those options aren’t always available on every train.
Most trains will have a luggage rack, an overhead rack, and space behind select seats to put luggage. If all else fails, you’ll have to store it in front of you when you sit, so keep that in mind when deciding which luggage to carry to Japan.
Additionally, trains have a limit for how much luggage you can bring on board. The limit is usually two pieces per person and the weight limit is 66 pounds. This doesn’t include your carry-on.
If your luggage is extra-large, you might have to call ahead and reserve the seats at the back of the train rows, as those have dedicated space for luggage. If you don’t follow the rules, you could end up having to pay extra fees.
Train Station Lockers
If you are planning on taking a day trip on a train and need to carry your luggage with you, there are lockers at many train stations where you can pay by coin to lock your belongings in a locker. Even if you like to travel with a backpack but keep your bigger luggage at a hotel, this could be a viable option to reduce what you have to carry.
Just keep in mind that lockers can fill up fast, so you don’t want to rely on them all the time.
Bringing Luggage On Buses
If you’re taking a bus from the airport, there will most likely be some storage for you to pack your luggage into. If you’re taking a city bus, there might not be any room for your luggage.
There is no designated space on a city bus, so you’ll have to carry it no matter what.
That being said, you probably won’t be moving around on city buses when you’re going to and from different cities in Japan; rather, you’ll most likely be staying in the city so you can keep your luggage at your hotel.
Baggage Delivery Services
If you are going to be in Japan for a long time moving from city to city , you might want to look into baggage delivery services, or takuhaibin. This service will take your luggage and deliver it to a designated spot in your next location of choice.
This service is available in select cities, such as Hakone, Kyoto, and Tokyo, and delivery typically ranges from between 1000 and 2000 yen depending on the service you want and the distance you need your luggage delivered to.
Narita Airport Luggage Delivery Service
Some hotels might even offer a similar service. It’s always worth asking the concierge what your options are for having luggage delivered to your next destination before deciding to carry it on a train or bus.
There are options for taxis and rental cars that will easily be able to accommodate your luggage, but those costs can add up fast if you’re going to be traveling through Japan for a long time.
How To Rent A Car In Japan
Remember Transportation Etiquette
Transportation in Japan can get pretty crowded, and you want to be cognizant of other peoples’ comfort levels and right to space. Having bulky luggage that takes up seating space for other passengers is not polite in Japanese culture.
While Japan’s transportation system is very organized and is designed very well to accommodate traveling passengers, you don’t want to create a hassle by taking up too much space with your baggage.

BEARON WHEEL
Unique, smooth-rolling BEARON WHEEL is inside of the wheels. In addition to the previous Silent function, the new wheels enable quick and easy turning. Highly durable chrome steel bearings minimize abrasive resistance.
Dual Open System (Patent Pending)
This unprecedented and innovative system was developed so that when you open one side of the luggage, the latch on the other side becomes a hinge. This is convenient when putting items in or taking them out, because you don't have to worry about the direction that the suitcase is facing.
360°Open System
The innovative 360°Open System allows the suitcase to be opened vertically or horizontally. This lets you easily take out small items in an airport or when moving from place to place, and also allows easy opening and closing in small rooms.
New Lightweight Air-Rim2® Structure
The new Air-Rim2® structure is amazingly light. The truss-shape plates allow the suitcase body to appropriately flex and absorb impacts. The Air-Rim2® offers light weight and excellent shape stability.
Casters with αGEL®
The caster mounting sections are equipped with αGEL®. αGEL® cushions impacts to the suitcase and provides a high vibration-insulating effect.
Caster Stopper
The caster stopper prevents the casters from moving inadvertently. It can be easily activated by pressing the button located near the handle. It is very useful in various situations, such as in a moving train, in an airport lobby with a slippery floor, or on a slope.
Ergonomic Handle
The ergonomic handle was developed jointly by the Ace Luggage Akabira Factory and the Chiba Institute of Technology from the viewpoint of human engineering. The bottom side of the grip is appropriately curved to fit your fingers naturally, thus preventing loss of balance when lifting the suitcase by the handle. The handle grip minimizes hand fatigue even when holding heavy luggage for a long period of time.
Handle Designed for 3-way Rolling
This handle is designed for easy gripping during any type of movement. It is shaped to fit the hand snugly during 2-wheel vertical travel, and to keep the luggage from straying away from you, for stress-free traveling. * Patented
Antibacterial and Deodorizing Interior
The Copper Stopper® Jacquard interior fabric offers antibacterial and deodorizing effects. It helps dissipate unpleasant odors collected during traveling and suppresses mold growth during storage.
Hybrid Polycarbonate Resin
The hybrid resin composed of polycarbonate and ABS offers superb impact resistance and high durability.
Auto-return Handle
The handle features an auto-return system so it returns to the original position when you release your hand from it.
Magnesium Alloy Frame
The frame is made of lightweight and tough 96% magnesium alloy. It boasts superb shape stability and withstands many years of use.
Wide Expandable System
The new wide expandable system offers a larger storage space and increased capacity. The slide panel feature on the inside allows smooth mode changing, and also maintains the body shape when expanded.
The LED light is activated by vibrations caused by the rolling of the suitcase. It enhances safety when moving in late afternoon and at night. Since the LED light is powered by vibration inertia, it does not require battery replacement, and is gentle to the environment.

"Hands-Free Travel" makes it possible to travel easily and comfortably without the inconvenience of heavy luggage. Visitors can use Japan's high-quality delivery/storage services to enjoy hands-free travel around Japan.
This logo marks for service counters certified as "Hands-Free Travel".
Just look for the Hands-Free Travel Counter to drop off your items, fill in the delivery form and you are ready to set off. Enjoy the top-class security and safety of Japan's services, multi-lingual access for international visitors, same-day delivery or delivery at a designated date and time, and compensation for damaged or lost items.
The Hands-Free Travel service is not just limited to delivery from and to the airport, most major hotels can arrange luggage delivery between hotels. Ask for details at the front desk on how to send your baggage onto your next destination. Even if you are not staying in a large hotel, you can still drop your bags off at a designated convenience store to be sent on.
If just want to simply store your luggage, you can easily use coin lockers of various sizes at most stations and tourist facilities in Japan. The cost varies on the size, but expect to pay between 300 and 600 yen. In many modern facilities it is possible to pay by various IC transit cards. Be aware that in very busy locations, the lockers fill up very quickly. Prior research into how and where to store your luggage will definitely help you to safe your time and simply focus on your journey throughout Japan.
Please be aware of some limitations on luggage delivery/storage services (For example items not exceeding 160 linear cm, within 25 to 30 kg in weight, contents are under 300,000 yen in value). Several items cannot be accepted: valuables, fragile items, fresh products and liquids, dangerous and hazardous materials. Delivery/storage services fee varies according to the airport, shipping destination and size of the luggage. Compensation services for damaged or lost items are provided. The amount of compensation may vary depending on the carrier used. There is also a shipment tracking service available.

What Our Customers Say
A perfect in flight suitcase especially when I need to carry a laptop. With the front pocket that can easily access to my laptop, I can pass security check smoothly and easily access to my laptop on flight. Not to mention the suitcase itself is so light and the reels are very smooth!
I like the simplicity and design of this bag. There are so many spaces where you can fit everything you needed for work. I'd recommend the bag to anyone who needs to take their mini-office around in their daily business life!
Amazingly designed bag! I was carrying this cute little bag all afternoon packed with 2 laptops, a full water bottle, and all the other life necessities, but it did not feel heavy at all. Magic! It has a place for every little thing so you find what you need right away when on the go. Highly recommended!

Finding a "made in Japan" suitcase has been almost a bit of an obsession for me and proteca simply ticks all the boxes! It's so light, rolls so smoothly, and looks absolutely classy. I might have to buy more of these and start a little collection!

This 'transformer' bag is perfect for both daily and travel backpack. The expanded mode is really universe-eater, I thought that I've put my everything in but I never make it full. The shoulder straps design is perfect. Unlike other backpack that make squishy pad, ACE did a magic with the shape instead to make it comfort.
It’s no secret that I really liked FREYA-RUCK2. It was a good bag for girls who don’t want to bring a bulky backpack to the office with a laptop and some cables inside the bag. In addition to that, there are also many zippered pockets inside. It’s very stealthy and great for keeping items like a passport or wallet. Even with all of that stuff inside, it was comfortable and easy for girls to lug around.
The wheels are incredibly easy to push around in ALL directions, and I love the function that allows me to open up the luggage while it is still standing up (in case you need to just take something in and out quickly without having to plop down on the floor to go through the entire luggage in public). Lastly, I really do enjoy the stop button which allows me to stop worrying about the luggage wheeling off somewhere. All of these functions (super light, functional design, ease of use) will allow your travel day to be much less stressful!

The Secret to Traveling With Luggage in Japan
October 31, 2022 by Robert Schrader Leave a Comment
The question of how to travel with luggage in Japan really stresses people out. In fact, I’d say it’s one of the most common queries I receive, right after where to stay in Tokyo and how many days to spend in Japan .
There are really two ways to approach this. For some travelers, Japan’s Takkyubin luggage forwarding service is the right answer, as the convenience of having your bags “shipped” from hotel to hotel trumps any of the little adjustments you have to make to your schedule in order to do so.
If Japan luggage forwarding is not your jam, not to worry. After nearly a decade of traveling (and, at times, living) in Japan, I’ve amassed a long list of strategies that make exploring Japan with bags as easy as stuffing your face at a ¥100-per-plate kaitenzushi place.
Why Luggage Causes Travelers to Japan Stress
Before I dig into the details of Japan luggage shipping services, I wanted to discuss the broader issue of why people feel intimidated at the thought of traveling through Japan with their bags. Part of this is not particular to Japan. No one wants to be moving on and off of trains, and walking long distances to and from hotels hoisting a giant suitcase around.
Then again, there are plenty of Japan-specific reasons this is unappealing as well. For one, Japan is a more crowded place than most, with less room for people, let alone for their belongings. Moreover, there’s the politeness of Japanese society and all the unwritten rules of etiquette there. And the written ones, like the strict check-in times of most hotels in Japan.
How to Travel With Luggage in Japan, Stress-Free
Use takkyubin luggage forwarding.
The most hands-off (literally) way to managing luggage in Japan is to avail Takkyubin , a luggage forwarding service provided by Japanese courier Yamato (the ones with the cat logo). If you want to use this service, make sure and mention it when you check in at each hotel, so the front desk can tell you when you’ll need to drop yoru bags off for forwarding to the next hotel, and also confirm rates for you.
Pre-book Shinkansen luggage storage
If you ride the subway in Tokyo or Osaka or take most local trains, you need to keep your luggage on or at close to your person as possible. On Shinkansen bullet trains, on the other hand, the conversation about luggage on Japanese trains is different. Since 2020, travelers are technically required to book storage slots at the end of their carriage in advance, although this doesn’t often happen in practice. Learn more here.
Avail coin lockers
It might sound strange to use lockers for anything if you’re not still a student, but they’re actually a common solution for travelers in Japan. To take advantage of them, follow the signs (it’s an icon showing a suitcase in a box and a key above) inside the railway station. Conveniently, you often don’t need coins to use coin lockers anymore, and can often use your PASMO card or mobile app .
Keep bags at hotel front desks
The best Japan luggage storage is free! Whether you check out early before flying out, or arrive before check-in in a certain city, the front desks of hotels where you have a current or just-completed reservation will almost always hold your bags for free. Simply explain your situation to the front desk person and they will take care of you quickly and without many further questions.
Pack light to begin with
Of course, the easiest way to avoid drama with baggage in Japan is simply not to bring much baggage at all. When I travel, regardless of for how long, I only ever bring a medium-sized backpack and a full-sized duffle bag, packed with about 7-10 days worth of clothing and shoes, and however many toiletries I ever need. If I’m traveling longer than that, I simply wash my clothes every week or so, either in my hotel or at a nearby coin laundry place.
Is Takkyubin Worth It?
Takkyubin isn’t expensive or particularly complicated, once you know the rules. On the other hand, these rules—namely, knowing when to drop your luggage off in order to have it shipped onward—are sometimes difficult to adhere to. Which is a problem: Failing to do so many inhibit you from being able to avail the service at all. Using Takkyubin throughout your trip to Japan isn’t practical for most travelers.
In my opinion, it’s better to aim to use luggage forwarding in Japan more strategically. For example, sending your “big” bags to Narita or Haneda airports from your last stop before coming back to Tokyo, in order to smooth your all-important journey to the airport. Then, strategically using coin lockers and luggage reservations in the interstitial periods so that your luggage isn’t with your 24/7, even if it isn’t being shipped on your behalf.
Other FAQ About Traveling With Luggage in Japan
What do you do with luggage when traveling to japan.
Managing luggage when you travel to Japan requires multiple strategies. Sometimes, you’ll use the Takkyubin service to “forward” your luggage between hotels; otherwise, you’ll put your bags in a coin locker or a hotel front desk so you don’t have to worry about them when you sightseeing. Having many strategies at your disposal will ensure your trip to Japan is a smooth one.
Can you take luggage on a train in Japan?
You can take luggage on a train in Japan, although you may need to make reservations in advance, depending upon what type of train it is. The best way to avoid complications in this regard is to bring smaller bags that can be easily stowed under or above your seat.
Can you store luggage at Japanese train stations?
Although only a few major train stations in Japan have left luggage areas, almost all have coin lockers where you can cheaply and easily store your luggage. Another option, if you aren’t simply in transit, is to visit your hotel before check-in (or before check-out, if you’re leaving), and leave your bags with the front desk.
The Bottom Line
Whether you avail Japan luggage forwarding or employ one of my other strategies, traveling with luggage in Japan is easier than you might imagine. At the end of the day, the more mindful you are before you travel, the less stressed you’ll have to be in the midst of it. Some travelers get good at availing luggage storage options, while others go the extra mile and simply pack less to begin with. Frequently Asked Questions
For European vacations, a lightweight and versatile style is key. Choosing a neutral color like black, brown or a metallic fabrication can help you take the same handbag anywhere from sightseeing to a nice dinner. A built-in wallet, anti-theft and RFID protection, and space for must-carry items are important. You'll also want to decide whether to carry your passport within your purse or have a concealed passport holder you wear under your clothing.
Purses with anti-theft straps are safest. Also, crossbody and belt bags that you wear around your body rather than a shoulder bag can help with safety.
You need to have space for your identification and passport for trips abroad, as well as credit cards, cash (have some easily accessible for tipping or street vendors), medications, prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, hand sanitizer or wipes, and your phone.

Complete Japan Shinkansen Guide - All Things You Need To Know
Most of you may wonder, what is Shinkansen? Japanese Shinkansen, often referred to as the bullet train, is an iconic symbol of the country's technological prowess, efficiency, and dedication to excellence. Since its inception in the 1960s, the Shinkansen has revolutionized travel in Japan, offering unparalleled speed, comfort, and reliability.
Traveloka will take you on a Shinkansen journey to the history, network, seating options, luggage regulations, and booking procedure, providing you with all the information you need to navigate this remarkable transportation system.
Why You Should Take Shinkansen
EL BANCO04 / Shutterstock.com
The Shinkansen's first debut was in October 1964, just in time for the Tokyo Olympics. The inaugural line, known as the Tokaido Shinkansen, connected Tokyo and Osaka, slashing travel time between the two cities from over six hours to just four. This groundbreaking achievement marked the beginning of a new era in Japanese transportation.
Over the years, the Shinkansen network has expanded significantly, encompassing multiple lines and connecting major cities across the country. Today, the Shinkansen is synonymous with speed, safety, and punctuality, serving as the backbone of Japan's rail infrastructure.
There are several compelling reasons to choose the Japan Shinkansen for your travel needs:
Speed & Reliability. With speeds averaging around 240-320 kilometers per hour (150-200 miles per hour), the Shinkansen drastically reduces travel time between major cities, making it an ideal choice for both business and leisure travelers. The Shinkansen has a stellar reputation for punctuality and reliability, with an impressive on-time performance record exceeding 99%.
Convenience & Views. The extensive Shinkansen network covers major cities and regions throughout Japan, providing convenient access to a wide range of destinations. Traveling by Shinkansen allows passengers to enjoy breathtaking views of Japan's diverse landscapes, from snow-capped mountains to lush countryside and coastal vistas. With large windows offering panoramic views, the journey itself becomes an unforgettable experience.
Environmental benefits? Yes! The Shinkansen is an eco-friendly mode of transportation, producing significantly lower carbon emissions compared to other forms of travel such as air or road transport. By choosing the Shinkansen, passengers can reduce their environmental impact while enjoying a comfortable and convenient travel experience.
Japanese Shinkansen Map: Network and Lines
The Japanese Shinkansen network consists of multiple lines that crisscross the country, connecting major cities and regions with high-speed rail service. Here are some of the primary Shinkansen lines in Japan.

These are just a few examples of the Shinkansen lines in Japan, each offering efficient and comfortable travel across the country. Whether you're exploring the bustling metropolises of Tokyo and Osaka or venturing into the tranquil countryside, the Shinkansen provides a convenient and scenic way to experience all that Japan has to offer.
Japan Shinkansen Seats and Classes
The Japan Shinkansen offers various seating options and classes to accommodate the diverse preferences and needs of travelers. Here are the primary classes available on most Shinkansen trains:
Ordinary Class (Standard Class):
Green Class (First Class):
Gran Class (Premium Class):
Please note that the actual ticket prices may vary depending on factors such as the distance of the journey, the specific route, and the time of booking. Additionally, prices are subject to change based on promotions, discounts, and seasonal variations.
Each class offers a different level of comfort and service, allowing passengers to choose the option that best suits their preferences and budget. Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly option or a luxurious travel experience, the Shinkansen has you covered with its range of seating classes.
Shinkansen Luggage Size Limit
The Japan Shinkansen imposes specific luggage size limits per class to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers. Here are the general guidelines for luggage size limits:
The luggage limit on Japan Shinkansen trains typically adheres to the standard guidelines for carry-on baggage. Passengers are generally allowed to bring luggage that fits within the dimensions of approximately 250 centimeters (9.8 inches) in height, 350 centimeters (13.8 inches) in width, and 600 centimeters (23.6 inches) in length.
Additionally, passengers are usually permitted to bring one small personal item, such as a backpack or handbag, onboard the Shinkansen. It's important to note that the exact luggage limit may vary depending on the specific train operator, service type, and individual Shinkansen train. Additionally, oversized or excessively heavy luggage may need to be checked or stored in designated areas onboard the train.
Passengers are advised to pack efficiently and within the specified size limits to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free journey on Japan's high-speed rail network.

Queue up at the ticket counter and inform the staff of your desired destination, departure time, and seating preference. The staff will assist you in selecting the appropriate ticket and completing the purchase. Payment can be made in cash or by credit/debit card, depending on the ticket counter's payment options.
✅ Useful Tips: If you don’t speak Japanese, it is strongly advised to write all the passenger data on a piece of paper and then give it to the salesperson to make the purchasing process smoother.
Ticket Vending Machines
Many train stations, especially major ones, are equipped with automated ticket vending machines that allow travelers to purchase Shinkansen tickets.
Select your preferred language, follow the on-screen instructions to input your travel details, choose your desired ticket type and class, and complete the transaction by inserting cash or using a credit/debit card. Once the transaction is complete, the vending machine will issue your tickets, along with a receipt if requested.
Does JR Pass cover Shinkansen? Yes! If you have a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass), you can use it to board most Shinkansen trains without purchasing individual tickets. However, seat reservations are recommended, especially during peak travel periods. To make seat reservations with a JR Pass, visit a ticket counter at a JR station, present your pass, and request seat reservations for your desired Shinkansen routes and dates.
Regardless of the method you choose, it's advisable to book your Shinkansen tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons or for popular routes, to secure your preferred seats and departure times. With these options available, purchasing Shinkansen tickets is convenient and hassle-free, allowing you to enjoy seamless travel across Japan's high-speed rail network.
Passengers should also be mindful of the limited space available in overhead storage compartments and luggage racks onboard the Shinkansen, especially during peak travel periods. Packing efficiently and within the specified size limits will help ensure a comfortable and hassle-free journey on Japan's high-speed rail network.

The 14 Best Travel Crossbody Bags to Complement Your Wanderlust
Brought to you by true enthusiasts.
Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.
There’s a fine line that divides the modern jet setter from the weary traveler, and it’s (mostly) marked by a precise combination of style and preparedness. And anyone who’s traveled knows that great bags are the most important companions.
Best Luxury
Bottega veneta the cassette padded leather crossbody bag.
Best Camera Bag
Isabel marant wardy camera bag.
Best Leather
Mansur gavriel moon sling bag.
The right crossbody allows you to carry your essentials hands-free while you’re hauling ass through airport security at 5 A.M. or putting in miles during a day of sightseeing. Of course, you might also need something to carry to dinner or on a spontaneous date with some accented stranger (a girl can dream!). The moral of the story is you need a bag that can do it all —and one that works for you in every way. So, whether you’re jetting off on an international adventure or gearing up for a summer vacation , shop the 14 best crossbody bags for travel, ahead.
If you prefer to shop designer, more power to you. For travel-friendly options, look for styles that close securely and transition well from day to night.
Dimensions: Height: 6.5 inches; width: 3.5 inches; length: 10.5 inches
Material: Leather
Colors: 19 options
Customer review: “This is a gorgeous bag, and the leather is so dreamy *but* you will be forced to pick and choose what you want to carry as the interior is quite small. I’m able to fit my iPhone pro, small wallet, lip balm and car key…and that’s pretty much it. But the look is worth it!”
While we love cameras, camera bags are usually ugly, point blank. You’re not paparazzi, and although you are a traveler, you wouldn’t want anyone to think of you as a tourist , right? This fashionable find from Isabel Marant is the solution.
Dimensions: Height: 5.25 inches; width: 3 inches; length: 7.25 inches
Material: Leather, silver, textile
Colors: Black
If style is your top priority, here’s an option that will match with quite literally anything you wear. The concession is that you might not be able to squeeze that telescopic camera lens inside it, but there’s more than enough room for airplane snacks.
Dimensions: Height: 5.5 inches; width: 7.1 inches; length: 10.6 inches
Material: Calfskin
Colors: Black, Desert, Avorio, Plum
Customer review: “What a beautiful and versatile bag, both in terms of style and colour. It's surprisingly roomy for the size. The leather is absolutely beautiful and buttery soft. Super happy with my purchase!”
Prada Padded Re-Nylon Shoulder Bag
It wouldn’t be a complete crossbody roundup without some form of nylon Prada. Similar to the ever-practical Re-Edition 2005 Re-Nylon Bag , this quilted flap-over bag comes complete with a detachable mini zipper pouch.
Dimensions: Height: 17 centimeters; width: 24 centimeters; length: 8 centimeters
Material: Nylon fabric
Colors: Black, Desert Beige
Customer review: “I have the original nylon and the Re-Edition, and they are my go-to bags. Lightweight, durable, and great for daily use.”
Dagne Dover Nova Sling Bag
If you’re the sporty or adventuring type of traveler, allow us to introduce you to this style from Dagne Dover. We think you’d be perfect for each other.
Dimensions: Height: 12 inches; width: 4 inches; length: 9.5 inches
Material: REPREVE recycled polyester
Colors: Onyx, Moonbeam, Goji
Customer review: “Recently took this bag on my weeklong trip to Amsterdam...It worked so well. It comfortably fit my small Nalgene water bottle, wallet, sunscreen, sunglasses—all the necessities. It’s not huge but it could also fit small souvenirs picked up throughout the day such as magnets, small jewelry items, candy, etc. Highly recommend!”
MZ Wallace Small Sutton Deluxe
Here at ELLE, we love MZ Wallace . This perfectly sized Sutton is just the latest obsession. We scrolled through pages and pages of five-star customer reviews in search of any “cons” to no avail.
Dimensions: Height: 10.2 inches; width: 9.8 inches; depth: 5.5 inches
Material: REC Oxford, Italian leather
Colors: 17 options
Customer review: “Love the feel, look and style. Everything fits so nicely in this bag. All items are an eyes view and so convenient to get. Love it.”
WE-AR4 The Cargo Leather Crossbody Bag
Cargo bags have appeared repeatedly over the past few fashion months, which means organization just got trendier. This sectioned bag allows you to keep all those bits and bobs in a place of their own.
Dimensions: Height: 8.5 inches; length: 10.5 inches; depth: 4 inches

This BAGGU option is actually a personal recommendation from associate fashion commerce editor Meg Donohue—although all the rave customer reviews amplify the point. This bag is spacious, not bulky, and surprisingly cute.
Dimensions: Height: 8 inches; width: 13.75 inches; depth: 4 inches
Material: Nylon
Colors: Black, Brown, Cocoa, Lemongrass, Pixel Gingham
Customer review: “This bag is so cute and easy to carry. I’m a mom on the go and my bags always get dirty. This bag is so comfortable and easy to clean. The strap is nice and wide and comfortable and the bag is big enough for me to even carry my Owala in it! If you’re on the fence, come on over. This bag rules!”
Béis The Sport Sling
Béis knows travel. This sling backpack is ideal for busy walkabout days and can complement any number of other Béis luggage pieces.
Dimensions: Height: 8.2 inches; width: 6.7 inches; depth: 2.7 inches

Customer review: “Love all the pockets and how accessible the sling is! Grabbing what you need quickly from the slots is so handy. I can’t wait to use this on my Italy trip!”
Travelon Anti-Theft Courier Tour Bag
As a traveler with her naïveté on constant display, this anti-theft bag could’ve saved me some heartbreak (and the four hours I spent Google translating a theft complaint to the Paris police department). Slash-resistant material, deep locking compartments, and an RFID-protected pocket mean you can rest a little easier knowing your belongings are safe and sound.
Dimensions: Length: 11 inches; height: 11.5 inches; depth: 3 inches

Customer review: “I use this when traveling, it holds so much without being bulky. I can put passports, phone, sunglasses, lip products, money/cards and still have gobs of room left.”
How to Shop for Travel-Friendly Crossbody Bags
- Look for bags that close securely. Zippered or lock closure tops are best. Snaps and magnets come in second, and open tops offer the least protection against theft.
- Before purchasing, make sure a bag will hold all of your necessities. If you’re a seasoned traveler, you likely know which items you like to keep on your throughout your days. But if not, give it some thought. Will you want to keep your passport on your person, or are you comfortable using the hotel safe? Do you carry an inhaler or EpiPen? Is your wallet large, or do you have a sleek card holder? Think these things over and be sure your new bag will hold everything you want it to. Often, it’s better to go slightly larger than you might initially think you need. Size up.
- Ideally, the bag will feel comfortable to wear and will have a thick, perhaps even padded, strap. It’s also preferable for straps to be adjustable.
- The more organizational features, the better.
- A bag that can be worn in multiple ways or has a versatile style is best if you want to pack light. Some bags won’t transition well to a fancy dinner or night out. If you only plan to bring one bag, keep this in mind.
- If you’re more concerned with practicality, you’ll definitely want to look for durable, weather-resistant materials, so you don’t have to worry about getting caught in the rain.
Why Crossbody Bags Are Good for Travelers
- If worn as a true crossbody, it’s not as easy for the bag to slip off your shoulder—or to be snatched—as it is with a tote, shoulder, or handbag. Yet, it still provides that handsfree convenience. The same can be said for backpacks.
- From a fashion perspective, crossbody bags are easier to dress up than backpacks and are likely to match with more of your outfits.

Alwyn Home Cold Foam Futon Mattress
Like a souped-up sleeping bag, a futon mattress is the perfect solution for impromptu overnight guests or those with limited real estate. Futons hail from Japanese culture and tout space-saving and flexible perks. As minimalism trends grew, futons trickled into to Western homes, especially college dormitories and snug apartments.
We found a mix of the best futon mattresses , including Queen sizes, foldable options and Amazon picks (so you can get speedy shipping in time for your next hosting gig). Plus, Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab Product Analyst Grace Wu weighs in on how to shop the most comfortable futon mattresses according to sleep type and more.
Sleepers who prefer that firm, sink-in feeling can get a good night's rest on a futon too. This Full-sized futon mattress has a 2-inch layer of memory foam and a 4-inch base of support foam . If you have a revolving door of guests, the memory foam mattress comes encased in a machine-washable cover that zips off easily. Take note: The frame is not included, but the brand claims it fits most standard Full-sized futon frames.
Type : Memory foam | Thickness : 6" | Sizes : Full
Kodiak Furniture 8" Full Size Spring Futon Mattress Replacement
When impromptu guests arrive, this Full-sized futon mattress springs into action. It's 8 inches thick, offering ample support for sleepers. With an innerspring construction , reviewers appreciated its "cushiness." It "popped into shape easily (sounds like it has springs inside) [and] folds well as a futon," an Amazon shopper said . "Overall, [I'm] really happy." Plus, its tufted design helps it blend more seamlessly with your space when not in use. Keep in mind it only comes in a Full size.
Type : Innerspring | Thickness : 8" | Sizes : Full
GH pros Emma Seymour and Alec Scherma slept on tatami-style futon mattresses during their trips to Japan, and Scherma described this style as "comfortable, supportive and firm." Wu added: "Because of their construction (typically foam sandwiched between fiber beds), they have a breathable nature , especially when placed on a traditional tatami mat." A popular pick among online shoppers, The Futon Shop mattress comes in 3-inch and 5-inch options. The only caveat? Seymour, a side sleeper, felt pressure on her hips when sleeping on the Japanese mattress type.
Type : Japanese | Thickness : 3" or 5" | Sizes : Twin, Twin XL, Full/Double, Full/Double XL Long, Queen, Eastern King, California King
This floor futon mattress fits right in at a children's sleepover — it's even available in Single and Cot sizes. It comes in 22 options, including constellation patterns or neutral colors (which better accommodate grown-up visitors). An online reviewer said their son slept soundly on the 4-inch-thick mat. "From the first night, my son was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and restful his sleep was, and his back didn't hurt!" they wrote. "He loves the idea that he can just roll it up when he wants a change of scenery and take it with him."
Type : Japanese | Thickness : 3.5" | Sizes : Twin, Full, Queen, King, Small Single, Cot
Available in thicknesses of 6-, 8-, 9- and 10-inches , this futon mattress from Wayfair is designed to provide plenty of cushion. It comes in 19 colors, spanning dark browns and greys to vibrant pops of sage green and cherry red. "I love it!" an online reviewer said. "I purchased the 10-inch thickness. It is so comfortable, and I did not have to wait for it to take shape at all." It's only available in Full or Queen sizes.
Type : Foam | Thickness : 6", 8", 9", 10" | Sizes : Full, Queen
What to consider when buying a futon mattress
While futons seem like a simple enough buy, they're actually a bit more costly than you might think, with quality ones starting at around $100. We tapped Wu for her expert advice on shopping for the best futon mattresses for your money. "Comfort depends on your sleep position, body type and personal preference," she notes. So, here's what you should keep in mind, per her advice:
✔️ Mattress type : Most futon mattresses you'll find are either all-foam, latex, innerspring, hybrid or Japanese tatami-style options.
- Foam mattresses are known for their pressure-relieving, cradling feel.
- Latex is known for its springy, responsive feel.
- Innerspring mattresses typically offer uniform support with excellent breathability, thanks to the coil system.
- Japanese-style futon mattresses provide cushioning but are relatively thin and firm, relying on the solid ground underneath to provide support. In a way, it can help enforce good posture or help train your body.
✔️ Sleep type: Everyone is unique when it comes to sleep position. But most medical professionals our Textiles Lab pros have spoken to over the years generally recommend the following advice:
- Keeping your spine in neutral alignment is key to reducing any strain or excess weight on areas like the back and hips.
- For side sleepers, a softer surface is ideal for relieving pressure, while stomach sleepers require a firmer surface to keep their backs and hips in a neutral position.
- Back sleepers and combination sleepers fall in between and are well-suited to a medium level of firmness.
✔️ Body type : Different body types also have different needs for mattress firmness levels. Sleepers with heavier body weights often need a firmer bed to ensure optimal support, while those with lighter body weights are better suited to a softer surface.
What is best depth for a comfortable futon mattress?
Futon mattresses typically range from 3 to 9 inches thick but some models reach up to 12 inches thick. If you're using one frequently, Wu recommends at least 8 inches (most standard bed mattresses are at least this height) for adequate support. For infrequent use, like spontaneous overnight guests, 6 inches works fine.
What are the disadvantages of a futon mattress?
"Their construction is often simpler due to the lower height," says Wu. "Modern bed mattresses are designed with features like ergonomic layouts (including zoned support and cushioning) often favored by our testing panel and cooling technology. You'll also have fewer options compared to the standard mattress space. Still, futon mattresses are great for saving space."
Is it OK to sleep on a futon every night?
We generally wouldn't recommend it. Futon mattresses are often less thick than your standard mattress, which can impact the mattress's lifespan, according to Wu.
Why trust Good Housekeeping?

What To Know Before Travelling With The Dyson Airwrap, Airstrait Or Corrale — And Where Can You Use Hair Devices Abroad?
Since using the Dyson Airstrait almost every day at home, I’ve come to appreciate the wet-to-dry hair straightener that saves time and minimises heat damage on my locks, plus it makes my hair is more manageable the next day (read our full review here ). So when I was due to travel to Thailand and Cambodia, I started looking up if it was possible to use the Airstrait overseas. After all, whether you’re travelling for leisure or for work, having a great hair day is always a plus — even a necessity for some. What I found instead was a hairy dilemma that Dyson users faced.
In a nutshell: Not all Dyson hair tools will work in all countries. But this does not apply only to Dyson devices — hair devices from other brands may face similar issues too, and we'll get to that in more detail below.
I did manage to use the Dyson Airstrait overseas, but here’s the caveat: it depends on which country you’re travelling to. Here’s all that I learnt first-hand — and from Dyson — about using hair tools abroad.
Can you travel internationally with the Dyson Airstrait, Airwrap and Supersonic?
(From left)
- Dyson Airstrait, $799. Buy it at Shopee , Lazada and Dyson
- Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler and Dryer. Buy it for $757 on Lazada ; $859 on Shopee , Tangs , Sephora and Dyson
- Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, buy it for $689 on Shopee , $699 on Lazada and Sephora
#1: Can you use a Dyson Airstrait, Airwrap or Supersonic from Singapore overseas? Check the voltage first.
Check that the voltage of your device is compatible with the voltage of the electrical supply of your destination. This is due to the fact that the Airwrap, Airstrait and Supersonic are not dual voltage. In the same vein, any hair device from other brands that is not dual voltage will also face the same issue.
Singapore’s standard voltage is 230V, so Dyson hair tools purchased in Singapore have a voltage of 220-240V (this applies to the Airwrap, Airstrait and Supersonic). If you’re travelling to another country that has an electrical supply between 220V and 240V, a Singapore-purchased Airwrap, Supersonic and Airstrait will work there. These include countries such as Thailand, Australia, the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe.
I put this to the test and travelled with a Dyson Airstrait on recent trips to Thailand and Cambodia — 220V and 230V respectively — and am happy to report that the device worked well.
However, other countries have standard voltages different from Singapore — ranging from 100-120V — and these include popular destinations such as Taiwan, Japan and the United States. Due to the difference in voltage, a Dyson device purchased in Singapore will not work in these countries, and attempting to do so may damage the machine.
Dyson tells 8days that they do not encourage travel with Dyson machines as the devices have been “precisely engineered for styling at the voltage of the country in which it was purchased”. The only exception in the hair tools line is the Dyson Corrale, the only travel-friendly Dyson hair device which is cordless and can be used universally (more details below).
Voltages of countries (non-exhaustive list): Countries with 220-240v: Singapore, Australia, Cambodia, China, Europe, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom Countries with 100-127v: Canada, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, United States of America
#2: Using an adaptor or converter voids the device’s warranty with Dyson
Travelling to a country with a different voltage? While some users have managed to use an adaptor or electrical converter to sidestep the issue, this is discouraged as “any damage caused by using your machine with a converter or adaptor may not be covered under the terms of your Dyson guarantee,” says Dyson.
“We advise using your Dyson beauty machine in another country with an adaptor or converter. As the adaptor is not manufactured or tested by us, we can’t be confident of its quality, safety, or guarantee it won’t cause permanent damage to the machine and its motor.”
Yes, it’s a bummer to splurge on a Dyson and not be able to use it wherever you want. But for safety and the sake of the device’s lifespan, leave the Dyson at home if the voltages are not compatible.
Instead, use a dual voltage hair device or a cordless, battery-operated hair tool, like the Dyson Corrale.
Dual voltage and cordless hair tools for travel
#3: Do you pack the Dyson Airstrait, Supersonic or Airwrap in checked luggage or carry-on baggage?
If you’ve done your research and do decide to travel with your Dyson Airstrait, Supersonic or Airwrap, the next thing to consider is do you pack your device in your checked luggage or do you take it with you on your carry-on?
This boils down to personal preference, rather than airline regulations, as these machines do not have batteries and most airlines will allow them in either carry-on or checked baggage. However, it’s good to double check with the airlines before you take them onboard – some airlines such as Scoot and Japan Airlines have guidelines online.
I packed the Dyson Airstrait in my checked baggage on three airlines — Jetstar , Singapore Airlines and Emirates — and did not face any issues.
But Dyson products don’t come cheap, so you don’t want to risk damaging it on your travels. While the brand does sell a travel pouch, I preferred to buy a separate hard case specially made for the Airstrait for extra protection.

Can you travel internationally with a Dyson Corrale?
Dyson Corrale Straightener, $749. Buy it at Tangs and Sephora
Yes, you can now use your Dyson Corrale everywhere, including Japan
Previously, using the Dyson Corrale overseas, especially in Japan where there are stricter laws and guidelines for air travel, came with its own set of challenges. But that has changed since last year and Dyson confirms that the Corrale can be used universally. In fact, the Corrale is the only device in Dyson’s haircare line-up that is travel-friendly.
The Corrale is a cord-free straightener has a universal voltage, so there’s no problem with charging it in countries with different voltages to the one in which you purchased it. However, you may still need a travel adaptor for suitable plug types. It also comes with a flight-ready tag so long as it’s set to flight-ready mode before airport security and throughout the flight.
Take note, though: the Dyson Corrale can only be packed in carry-on luggage, and not in checked luggage, according to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations. It should also be packed in its heat-resistant pouch. Click here for more packing instructions as well as a note of compliance to show airlines should you run into any issues travelling with the Corrale.
