Louise Distras unveils new video for Land Of Dope And Glory

Watch the new video from Louise Distras, streaming exclusively on Louder

louise distras tour

Yorkshire noisenik – and Louder favourite – Louise Distras is premiering the video for her new single Land Of Dope And Glory exclusively with Louder.

The single is the first to be released from her forthcoming album, due to be released in autumn this year. The album will serve as the follow up to her 2015 debut Dreams From The Factory Floor .

On the video, Distras told Louder: " Land Of Dope And Glory is the out-and-out punk rock track that fans have been asking for, for ages.

"The music video is an intense and compelling conceptual performance piece directed by Lewis Cater. It's inspired by Black Mirror , and looks like Crass joined forces with Barbie to create a dystopian TV channel!

"The video is a reflection of a world where G.O.D (gold, oil, drugs) is money. It's a metaphor for propaganda strategies that major corporations use to encourage our desire for consumer goods, services and ideas, by using suggestive images and captions to influence us emotionally. It feels like this constant manipulation that we as people face on a daily basis from faceless companies and government stands against everything we value as human beings which is peace, love and understanding.

" Land Of Dope And Glory is a taster of what's to come from the new album recently recorded in Oakland California with Ross Petersen (Bruce Springsteen, Goo Goo Dolls, The Vamps) and Steve Whale of The Business."

Distras is currently on tour in the UK . Check out full dates below, or find out more on her Facebook or Twitter pages.

louise distras tour

Louise Distras is a relatively new voice in the UK’s acoustic punk scene, but she is already collecting praise like kids used to collect Pokemon. Ahead of the release of her new double A-Side single, Love Me The Way I Am / Bullets she kindly took some time out of her hectic touring schedule to answer some of our questions.

So you’ve got your new single & video coming out on 12th May. Tell us a bit about the song and why you chose it to be the next single?

‘Love Me the Way I Am’ to me, is the most important song I’ve ever sang because it was written for one of my friends, who attempted suicide shortly before coming out to his parents. He survived to tell the tale and is now happy. Anti-Gay laws and homophobia are having a dangerous impact all over the world. The ILGA listed 82 countries with criminal laws against same sex relationships. The fact that it’s a crime to be in love and that there’s people being murdered, imprisoned, persecuted and young LGBT people facing fear of rejection from their families and bullying from their peers is abhorent. Everybody deserves to live a life without prejudice and deserves to be loved for who they are.

And the video? Who did you work with and what’s the overall concept?

The video is a visual representation of living under the thumb of intolerance and fear, and a celebration of love. I worked with an amazing director-producer called Louise Cowley, and DOP Esther Vardy with whom I also worked with on the Shades of Hate and Stand Strong Together videos.

love me the way i am cover

How do you feel about videos? Do you see them as an opportunity to add a visual element to your song, or just a necessary tool in the current musical climate?

Music videos are a great opportunity to add visual artistry and plant seeds.

You’ve got a number or Euro dates coming up, some with Kevin Seconds, how did that come about?

I was asked and I said yes.

How do you deal with being on the road? Are you able to write while on tour, or is it more about getting out in front of fans and then just taking it day by day?

It’s not being on the road that I struggle to deal with, however being at home gives me the opportunity to write, so it’s swings and roundabouts. I dunno how writing on tour works out for other people, but for me it’s not something I’m able to do or wish to do.

Can you tell us about the best (or oddest) experience you’ve had on the road? If yes, please share!

Ok, the weirdest and greatest experience I had recently was in Canada when we were on this two day drive from Vankleek Hill to Thunder Bay. A fair chunk of the drive involved driving right up through Ontario by the side of Lake Superior. At one point, to the left of the van we could see the Sleeping Giant at the other side of the lake, and to the right we could see a rainbow. Then we saw another rainbow, so we saw a double rainbow. Then the van drove right past the end of the first rainbow, which was so close I could’ve put my arm out of the window and touched it. So, you heard it from me…the end of the rainbow really does exist.

I’ve read in previous interviews that you maintain control over everything you do, which must be brilliant, yet exhausting. How did your fiercely DIY ethos work with Street Revolution Records with regard to the release of ”Dreams from the Factory Floor’?

Sure and I don’t understand why anyone would do it any other way. Street Revolution was inspired by Joan Jett and Blackheart Records.

Do you ever envisage having to start bringing people on board to help? Touring managers for example?

It’s more about working only with people who I trust and are in a similar kind of headspace. Those kind of people are very few and far between.

Q. Where did your first connection with punk rock come from? I understand Nirvana was an early influence, but how did you first discover them and then how did that take you back to first generation UK punk stuff like The clash and the Sex Pistols?

For sure, Nirvana were my first and greatest influence and if it wasn’t for Nirvana I would’ve never picked up a guitar. I became a fan of other bands like Mudhoney, The Pixies, Melvins, and Pearl Jam through Nirvana. When I was a teenager I used to swap mixtapes with friends at school, so they were my lifeline to new music because my family was really really poor.

Your songs are both intensely personal yet eschew the spirit of 1st wave punk rock. Did you set out to create a particular sound, or did it simply drift towards that because of life experience and the music you were listening to?

Neither. I was actually listening to a lot of ELO when writing Dreams from the Factory Floor, but when I was writing that record I didn’t even realise it at the time because I wasn’t writing with the purpose of making an album. Then I met producer Steve Whale and it all just kind of happened and we brought it all together. I’ve always loved punk rock, but I also love pop melody. So I guess I’m going from one extreme to the other, then sometimes in between. One thing I do know is that it’s never been my intention to imitate the past, and lyrically I always wanted to dig deeper than shoes and sex. Dreams from the Factory Floor is the record I always wanted to make and I feel so lucky and grateful to have had the opportunity.

Did you gravitate towards punk rock because it, probably more so than any music movement before it, features a strong female presence? Definitely not as many as there should have been, but icons like Poison Ivy, Siouxsie Sioux, Poly Styrene, Debbie Harry and Wendy O Williams played a massive role in defining that scene?

No. I gravitated towards punk rock because I’m an outsider and punk rock showed me that there was a better world out there that I could create for myself on my own terms. Poison Ivy, Siouxsie Sioux, Debbie Harry etc and even the riot grrrl movement was all before my time. I grew up without a female role model, and I only learned about new bands through mixtapes. Perhaps one of the reasons Nirvana had such a profound effect on me is because Kurt was a feminist in a sea of macho lad bands. The fact that I grew up without a female presence, I think ultimately laid the foundation for the driving force behind what I do.

You emancipated yourself at 16 – what drove you to what some might describe as such a drastic step? And where did you go, both in literal terms – moving and living wise and emotionally after you made this decision?

Because I was a punching bag and I’d had enough, so it didn’t feel like such a drastic decision at the time. It was liberating and more of a relief to get out of there. I stayed on floors, sofas, in sheds, tents and spare rooms, wherever really, until the person putting me up got pissed off with me and kicked me out. A couple of times I was lucky to get into sheltered housing and my last stay recently led to me having the same place to come back to now when I’m not on tour. During that period of time-emotionally, I think was fine or at least numbed out to the point of being fine, and it was the best decision I ever made. However the whole experience opened my eyes to the way that the system treats young people, and if you are someone who comes from poverty or an abusive background or both, you are automatically at a disadvantage because there are more obstacles to overcome so it means your entire future is at stake. Once you are trapped within the confines and the cracks of that system, it’s very difficult to get out because it is working against you rather than for you-one way or another you are still being abused whether it’s by your family or by the system. Punk rock gave me an opportunity to get out.

Do you feel like ‘Dreams from the Factory Floor’ tells the story of a past or current version of you?

Both, and sometimes it’s as though it was some kind of premonition. It depends what frame of mind I’m in.

You’ve been involved in a number of campaigns, vocally supporting pussy riot, work with the Sophie Lancaster foundation, as well work with organisations on International Womens day, which are all immensely important causes. Can you explain a bit about how you balance the highlighting of social & political messages with being a musician?

Well, when there is something or someone in your mind and your heart that you care so much about, it’s really difficult to achieve any kind of balance towards the situation, and it becomes impossible to keep quiet about it.

You have a lot planned in 2014 already, where do you hope to be come the end of this year?

I really hope I’m lucky enough to still be writing, releasing music and touring. I just take it one day at a time.

What are your thoughts on the follow up to ‘Dreams From the Factory Floor’? Are you already writing and planning for this?

The music press has generally been very supportive of you, making comparisons to the likes of Billy Bragg, Joe Strummer and Frank Turner. What do you feel about these kind of inevitable comparisons that the press will always make about you and your music?

Well, for a start it’s pretty obvious to anyone with half an ear that my music sounds nothing like Frank Turner, Billy Bragg or Joe Strummer. The truth is I’ve got no interest in being compared to other people, or being labelled as a protest singer, and I’ve got zero interest in what other people think. I just want to be left alone to do my own thing.

Finally, I know it was your birthday recently..how did you celebrate?

I spent the day travelling and had no intention of celebrating it, however when I arrived at my destination I was given a surprise birthday dinner with lots of balloons and cake. What started out as a totally rubbish, boring day was made into one of the greatest days ever by the people I care about the most, so I feel very lucky and grateful to have experienced that.

Louise Distras Interview

image

In this day and age when kids are obsessed with the instant and empty fame offered by the likes of the x-factor and Britain’s got (no!) talent, it is a relief to see an artist like Louise Distras emerge. Firstly, and most importantly, she has released a great album (see our review here https://thesoulofaclown.com/reviews/a-e/ ) but she also has an opinion and willingness to make her views known. We got the chance to talk to Louise about this and much more.. I SAW YOUR FACEBOOK STATUS REGARDING COMING ACROSS A GIRL THAT USED TO BULLY YOU IN YOUR HOMETOWN OF WAKEFIELD. WAS IT A TOUGH PLACE TO GROW UP?

Unfortunately any one of my stories is not uncommon but it’s not something that I allow to define me anymore, as it should never be allowed to define anyone. As I found out that day, sometimes all it takes is a scar from your past to rear it’s ugly head to make you realise how far you’ve actually come and for that I’m grateful.

WAS IT PART OF THE REASON YOU GOT INTO MUSIC?

I’ve always loved music and I’ve been singing and playing for as long as I can remember. My life experiences have shaped the driving force behind what I do and they’re the reason why I try my best to occupy my space in a positive way. Someone once told me that music can’t change the world, but I will defy that statement until my last breath, because music already has changed the world and will continue to do so forever. It certainly changed mine and yours, otherwise we wouldn’t be here talking to each other.

WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES? Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pixies, Queen and John Lennon

IN A LOT OF REVIEWS, COMPARISONS ARE MADE TO FRANK TURNER. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT? WHAT ABOUT BEING DESCRIBED AS ‘THE 21ST CENTURY JOE STRUMMER’? TALK ABOUT PRESSURE!

I’m aware of the fact that the music press continues to try and attach me to this bourgeois ‘folk revival’ trend, but I just want to be left alone to get on with doing my own thing. With no disrespect intended, I’ve got no interest in lazy journalism that compares me to other artists (no matter how awesome they are) and I possess zero desire to pander towards the fashion of the day. The term ‘revival’ speaks for itself really, and I am so looking forward to the day that there’s nothing left to imitate and the pendulum swings again. The sooner the nostalgia and fake rebellion wears off, the sooner we can have a real youth counter-culture that isn’t afraid to piss off the powers that be.

I HAVE SEEN LOTS OF ANTI X FACTOR COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO YOU; DO YOU REALLY HATE IT?

For me, X Factor has nothing to do with music and everything to do with celebrating bullying. It’s a powerful system of ridicule that filters down into everyday life as a casually acceptable response designed to destroy the self esteem of our youth and kick us into line with the status quo.

HAVING TWO YOUNG DAUGHTERS, I’M CONSCIOUS OF THE ABSENCE OF GOOD FEMALE ROLE MODELS FOR THEM. I MUST ADMIT, I HAVE EVEN ENCOURAGED THEIR CURRENT LOVE OF KATY PERRY AS AT LEAST SHE HAS SOME ‘CHARACTER’; DO YOU THINK THE LACK OF FEMALE ROLE MODELS IS A PROBLEM?

Rihanna, Miley, Katy, Beyonce or Britney; yes they are all part of the same money making machine that is the mainstream music industry. But who am I to say that any one of those artists is a bad role model for a young woman growing up? I’m no authority, but one thing I do know is that when I was growing up I felt like an alien, and I wasn’t exposed to any positive female or male role models (it’s important for guys to set a positive example too). It sure would’ve been nice for someone to say to me ‘Hey, you know what? You’re really cool just the way you are, and you will grow up to be whoever you want to be on your own terms without answering to anyone but yourself.’ Sometimes I wonder what difference positive reinforcement would’ve made to my life in the face of the bullying and knock downs by other kids (girls and boys) at school, and family members because to them I was ‘weird’, ‘fat’, ‘ugly’ and more interested in reading books than being interested in make-up and clothes. I also know that I wasn’t alone in experiencing this. The truth is that there’s nothing wrong with being into any of those things, what’s wrong is that sexism is so inherent in our society that misogyny is masked also by women who use the same weapons of ridicule, hatred and slut shaming to tear each other apart. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that I feel as though acts of woman hatred by other women just impedes progress even more-so. All women and young girls regardless of colour, class, religion, sexuality, ability and body shape are REAL women and we don’t need to be given the power to each become our own independent revolutionary forces because we already possess that power. For me, any woman or man in the public eye that nurtures that power through positive reinforcement and promotes diversity and sisterhood to our youth (instead of encouraging us to tear each other down) is a good role model in my book.

IN A PREVIOUS INTERVIEW YOU REFERRED TO LIKING BARRY GIBB (THE BEE GEES) AS A SONGWRITER. I REALLY ADMIRED THAT AS (IN MY OPINION), YOU CAN’T BEAT A WELL WRITTEN POP SONG. DO YOU AGREE?

Yes, especially if it includes fuzzy distorted guitars!

WHERE DOES YOUR INTEREST IN POLITICS COME FROM? WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?

I’m a musician not a politician, and all I’m doing is passing on a message from the next generation and doing my best to show that there is another world out there that we can create for ourselves away from X Factor and the hateful digital wasteland of social networking. I promote working class unity because as long as we are fighting each other then we’re not standing together to hold the powers that be accountable for the inequality and injustices they create to distract us whilst they run society in their own interests.

image

YOUR DEBUT ALBUM ‘DREAMS FROM THE FACTORY FLOOR’, HAS GOT SOME REALLY BRILLIANT PRESS. HAS IT TAKEN YOU A BIT BY SURPRISE? YOU MUST BE, RIGHTFULLY, VERY PROUD OF IT?

The thing I’m forever grateful for and proud of the most, is the huge surge of positivity and support that was invested in the record by the global punk scene. Especially from the folks that have always stood shoulder to shoulder with me from my very first solo show three years ago. It’s a cool thing for sure that the music press liked the record, but even if they had said it was shit, I wouldn’t have allowed their words to make me or anyone else feel any less proud of what we achieved. I’m very lucky.

DID YOU ACTUALLY WORK IN A FACTORY? IF SO, HAVE YOU BEEN BACK TO GLOAT YET?

Everyone has their own factory floor, with a vision, a hope and a dream for a better life and a better future for their kids. I wouldn’t consider that to be something to gloat at.

YOU ARE TOURING THE UK IN FEBRUARY, ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IT AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

Yes, very much so. I was lucky enough to be able to do alot of travelling last year and I spent most of 2013 touring mainland Europe and Canada, so I’m really excited to be back on home turf. I’m also really looking forward to playing shows with some amazing supports, especially Jesus & His Judgemental Father from Leeds and Grim Dylan from Derby. Who knows what’s going to happen? Expect the unexpected!

I WOULD BE REALLY INTERESTED TO KNOW WHAT TYPE OF CROWD YOU GET, I IMAGINE IT COULD BE QUITE MIXED?

For sure, there’s all kinds of amazing people who listen to alot of different kinds of music but I feel that we’ve all got the same story to tell.

WHAT ELSE CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN 2014?

2014 is set to be a great year for shows and festivals across the UK plus mainland Europe and I’m really looking forward to it. For quite some time I have been overwhelmed with demands to tour the USA, Japan, and Indonesia so it’s my goal to make it to at least one of those places this year. Fingers crossed! I’ll be kicking off festival season at Rebellion Festival Amsterdam in March, followed by my return to Myfest in Berlin (Germany). I’m also really happy to announce that I’ll be making my debut at Bearded Theory Festival in Derby (UK), and there’s loads more tour and festival dates to be announced really soon. There’s also plans for a new single release in the first half of the year, which includes a brand new music video that has already been filmed. There’s an awful lot more I could say, but life wouldn’t be fun without the element of surprise, right?

Who Is Louise Distras? British Singer Arrested Over 'Trans-Rights Extremists' Comments

A female artist who had been "cancelled by the music industry for her gender-critical views" was detained by police and interrogated on remarks she had made on GB News regarding "trans-right extremists."

Who Is Louise Distras? Louise Distras, 36, disclosed on social media that she was taken into custody for five hours on Saturday, interviewed under caution, and then released without being charged. She said that since she hadn't broken any laws, the officers had assured her that no action would be taken against her.

Distras, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, revealed she was washing her hair in the shower when police came to her house unannounced to arrest her.

'I was naked except for a towel and still had flippin shampoo in my hair,' she said.

She was forced to endure the humiliation of having to get dressed in front of a police officer with a bodycam like she was a 'terrorist.'

Once in the custody of West Yorkshire Police she was photographed and also had DNA swabs and her fingerprints taken.

Describing her ordeal as an 'absolute ******* farce,' she revealed that she planned to take legal action.

'Cancelled' For Her Views On Trans Women The singer-songwriter had recently gone public to reveal she has been 'cancelled' by music industry bosses for denying that transwomen are women, while speaking to GB News.

'Everything in my life starts with me being a woman and being an adult human female right, so I stated this radical biological fact in an interview in May this year and since then the music industry has just shut its doors on me,' she had said.

'The platforms that championed me have now denounced me as a Nazi and as a transphobe, I'm being threatened by trans-rights extremists, one of them tracked down my address and turned up at my home. I had to go to court and get an injunction."

She said police also questioned her about similar comments she had made in a speech at a Let Women Speak event in Leeds in November.

At the Leeds rally, she told the crowd of onlookers: 'If men in dresses want to claim to be women then women are always going to put up a fight to defend our hard won rights, of course we are.'

'Everything in my life starts with me being a woman and a woman is an adult human female.'

Issues With Her Agency Ms Distras said she was 'fired' by Midnight Mango, her agency and her material was also taken off music sites Big Cartel and Band Camp because of her opinions.

She said: 'I feel what's left of the industry is now being kicked to death by these intolerant activists who are shutting down and threatening anybody who dares to disagree with them or who won't bow down to these insane demands of ideological compliance'.

Adding that the situation was 'ridiculous' as the 'music industry is supposed to be built on freedom of expression.'

Matt Bartlett, managing director of Midnight Mango, said today: 'We have not fired Louise Distras. She asked us to find out if we could book shows for her with backstage security. We did the due diligence but were not able to make that stack up financially. Providing personal security was too expensive and she doesn't sell a lot of tickets.
