First Disney Cruise to sail for New Zealand and Auckland home port

It's something Disney fans in Australia have been waiting a very long time for.

And finally, for the first time ever, Disney Cruise Line will offer "magical sailings" in Australia and New Zealand after it announced new destinations.

Ever since its inception back in 1998, the Disney Cruise Line has never sailed Down Under or across the ditch to New Zealand.

Instead, it has been sailing out of locations in North America and Europe.

However, the Disney Wonder, which originally launched in 1999, will now set sail from four new home ports – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland.

It will only be for a limited time, from two to six nights between October 2021 to February 2024.

"We are so excited to bring the magic of a Disney cruise vacation close to home for guests in Australia and New Zealand," Josh D'Amaro, chairman for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, said.

The Disney ships are full of nods to the Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars franchises. Photo / Disney Cruise Lines, Supplied

"On these limited-time sailings, the ship is the destination, and our amazing Disney Cruise Line crew can't wait to welcome guests on board as they are immersed in their favourite stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars."

On-board will also be favourite Disney friends including Captain Mickey Mouse, Captain Minnie Mouse, Goofy and Pluto, and entertainment including original Broadway-quality shows.

"We are so glad to bring something new to those who may have never experienced this type of Disney magic before," D'Amaro said.

Guests will also enjoy dining experiences with imaginative restaurants including Tiana's Place, where they can meet Princess Tiana and enjoy a taste of New Orleans cooking, and Animater's Palate, an interactive dining experience that celebrates Disney animation.

Kids will have their own Frozen adventures in Disney's Oceaneer Club, along with a multi-level replica of Andy's Room from Toy Story and a place to summon their inner super hero at the Marvel Super Hero Academy.

And it's not just the children who get to enjoy themselves. Adults will have their own exclusive spaces to rest and relax, including the adults-only Quiet Cove pool, dining at Palo and the rejuvenating Senses Spa & Salon.

It's set to sail on October 28, 2023, departing from Sydney. Bookings are open to the general public from Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 8am AEST and 11am NZDT.

Disney Cruise Line Heading to Australia and New Zealand in 2023

  • September 12, 2022

Disney Wonder

Disney Cruise Line is heading to Australia and New Zealand for the first time in fall 2023.

According to an announcement made at the D23 Expo, the company is debuting in the region with the Disney Wonder.

Starting on October 28, 2023, the 1999-built vessel is set to offer 32 two- to six-night cruises in the region, sailing from four different homeports.

With the biggest number of departures, Sydney will welcome the Wonder for 12 cruises through February 2024.

The port of Melbourne follows closely with ten scheduled departures in November, January and February.

Brisbane and Auckland will also see homeport operations, with several cruises departing from both ports in November and December.

Bookings for the Australia and New Zealand itineraries are set to open on September 26, 2022.

As part of the new deployment, the Disney Wonder is also offering positioning cruises that visit Hawaii and the South Pacific.

After completing a summer program in Alaska , the 1,750-guest vessel will sail from Vancouver on a ten-night voyage to Honolulu.

Departing in early October 2023, the itinerary features calls to Hilo, Nawiliwili and Kahului before arriving at its final destination in Hawaii.

Continuing its way to Sydney, the Wonder offers a 13-night cruise South Pacific cruise that sails to American Samoa, Fiji and New Caledonia.

Additional transpacific cruises are available in early 2024, when the ship is set to return to North America.

You won't be bored on a party cruise.

The magic of a cruise vacation is created with culinary delights, exotic ports of call, comfortable accommodations, carefully curated spaces and, of course, parties. These onboard celebrations can take many forms: large dance parties and quiet lounges, family-friendly and adults-only, adrenaline-pumping and relaxing activities, elegant and come-as-you-are events, and entire ships transformed into themed cruises .

Prepare for fun times on the following ships hosting the best party cruises at sea.

Royal Caribbean: Oasis of the Seas

Explore the eastern and western Caribbean aboard Oasis of the Seas , one of the largest cruise ships in the world. On this 6,771-passenger vessel, 18 decks of fun and 2,109 crew members await your next voyage.

  • Bionic Bar: For late-night parties where "mixology meets technology," order cocktails from unexpected bartenders: robots! These two specialized tech creations are well-versed in classic alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails, and they can also mix a bespoke drink designed by you.
  • Adrenaline-pumping amenities: Get ready for day and night thrills at four separate venues. Ripcord by iFly is billed as the only skydiving simulator at sea; North Star allows cruisers to snap stunning photos from the tallest viewing deck found on any cruise ship; Sky Pad provides a virtual reality experience while patrons jump on a bungee trampoline; and the Ultimate Abyss, named the tallest slide at sea, plunges 10 stories down.
  • Surprise events: Scattered throughout the ship are several surprise activities that pop up among the scheduled itinerary of events. Join a toga party; boogie at a disco brigade; dress for a masquerade party; or transport back in time at an '80s-inspired extravaganza.

Then, see everyone again at the open-air Mega Deck Party under the stars on the Lido Deck, complete with more dancing, games and giveaways.
  • RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar: Taste the flavors of the tropics at these two popular venues for drinks, music and good times. Choose from a chill menu of cocktails and specialty beer while you stay cool by the pool.
  • Fun and games: If parties with your friends include spirited competition, this is your ship. In addition to showing off your skills on the basketball court and obstacle-filled mini golf course, play cornhole, sign up for the scavenger hunt and compete in art games. Then, try your luck gambling in the casino, playing bingo, and joining the "Deal or No Deal" onboard game show.

disney cruise ship new zealand

I've traveled on all 5 Disney cruise ships. I have 2 clear favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to book again.

  • My family and I have been on nine Disney cruises and all five ships.
  • We love the fleet's two smallest ships, Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.
  • Although we had a great experience on board Disney Wish , it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

I've been on nine Disney cruises with my husband and two teenage sons. We've sailed on other cruise lines including Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, and Royal Caribbean , but Disney Cruise Line is always our top pick.

Stellar service, subtle theming, top-notch kids' and teen programs, and a dreamy private island in the Bahamas are some of the reasons we keep returning.

So far, we've been on all five Disney Cruise Line ships — Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. We'll soon have more ships to explore, with Disney Treasure planning to set sail in December and Disney Destiny set to embark on its maiden voyage in 2025 .

Out of the five ships we've been on, two stand out as favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to travel on again.

My favorite ships are Disney Wonder and Disney Magic

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic are my favorite ships in the Disney Cruise Line.

They have nearly identical deck layouts and are the fleet's two smallest ships. Some may see this as a negative, but I prefer the smaller, more intimate size and the ease of getting around the ships.

Disney Wonder also has my favorite Disney Cruise Line restaurant, Tiana's Place. It offers a delicious, Cajun-inspired menu and a fun "The Princess and the Frog" theme. There's even a lively floor show with jazz music.

I love Disney Magic , too, but I thought it was more dated and in need of an update than Disney Wonder.

I also didn't love the Magic's Rapunzel-themed restaurant nearly as much as I love Tiana's Place.

The food at Rapunzel's Royal Table was just so-so, but the entertainment and theming more than made up for it. The in-person appearance of Rapunzel and Flynn, capped by a lantern processional to the tune of "I See the Light," was glorious.

Although Disney Wish was great, it was my least favorite ship to travel on

Although I had a great experience on board Disney Wish, it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

The Wish is unarguably beautiful — everything is sparkling new, and the atrium is decked out with a life-size Cinderella sculpture — but I thought the layout was a little clunky.

I may have felt this way because many of Disney's ships are laid out very similarly, and after nine cruises, we're pros at finding our way around.

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have nearly identical deck layouts, as do Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Disney Wish, however, is laid out much differently.

Unlike the other Disney cruise ships we've been on, Disney Wish doesn't have a specific area for adults-only lounges.

Instead, the adults-only bars and lounges, which are off-limits to kids after 7 p.m., are scattered throughout the ship. This means the Wish doesn't have that true kid-free haven that the other ships have.

I also found that many parts of the ship, from the dining rooms to the pools, felt crowded

For all that criticism, my family and I enjoyed sailing on Disney Wish . But now that we've crossed it off our list, we won't be in any hurry to jump on board again unless the route is one we can't pass up.

Correction: June 7, 2024 — An earlier version of this story mislabeled a photo of Disney Wish as Disney Wonder.

Disney’s new cruise line private island destination opens this week

On June 6, 2024, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point joins Castaway Cay as a Disney-exclusive island attraction offering one-day excursions with family fun.

The cruise industry overall surged in popularity last year following a rebound from the pandemic.

Cruise Lines International Association captures this growth in its annual  State of the Cruise Industry  report. In its latest findings, cruising surpassed pre-pandemic levels in 2023, reaching 107% of 2019 levels. Those levels include 31.7 million passengers globally, with 18.1 million cruising in North America, Disney Cruise Line’s primary market. 2024 shows more growth, with 34.7 million global passengers projected to sail on the high seas this year.

Disney Cruise Line’s current expansion plans include the addition of four new ships to its fleet between 2022 and 2025 and a new private island destination that opens this summer.

Leaning into authentic Caribbean culture

Disney  selected the Bahamian island of Eleuthera as the home of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Eleuthera sits along the island’s southern shores, and the guests will note Bahamian influences throughout its architecture, dining, and character costumes, among other elements. These influences concentrate around the Goombay Cultural Center. Centrally located at Lookout Cay, the center features local artists and other activities to immerse guests into the Bahamas.

Lindsay Brookshier, content director of  Mickey Visit , shares her thoughts on Disney’s approach to designing Lookout Cay. “They are working to create a destination authentic to the Bahamas culture that showcases the area’s natural beauty. The concept artwork that I have gotten to preview has been stunning. This looks like it will be a fantastic addition to the existing Castaway Cay private island destination.”

Lookout Cay embraces the spirit and culture of the Bahamas, even featuring an array of  bright, vibrant flavors  at its several eateries. In addition to classics like burgers and salads, dining options include Bahamian Pigeon Peas & Rice, Plant-based Island Curry, and Bahamian-style Lime marinated grilled snapper.

Mickey, Minnie, and the rest of the gang will sport new, island-exclusive apparel. Mikkel Woodruff, Editor of  Sometimes Sailing , highlights these as one of the exciting and unique aspects of Lookout Cay. Woodruff explains, “I can’t wait to take photos with Mickey and Minnie in their  colorful cruise outfits  designed by Bahamian fashion designer Theodore Elyett. Only Disney could bring this to the Bahamas!”

Paradise for all ages

Like other Disney destinations, Lookout Cay offers fun experiences and amenities for adventurers of all ages. A day at the private island includes character meet-and-greets and lively entertainment. Lookout Cay’s multiple water play areas, including Rush Out Gush Out Water Play, keep little ones occupied. Two shows — RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration and Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash — blend Bahamian culture with classic Disney entertainment.

Local experts offer guided tours of the island, and bold voyagers can traverse trails and utilize bicycle rental services to trek around Eleuthera. Family-friendly beaches boast beautiful cabanas rentable by those seeking a soothing, subdued stay, whether parents vacationing without kids or traveling solo.

Freelance journalist and theme park expert Megan duBois says she anticipates “enjoying the adults-only spaces, which are a quiet area away from all the controlled chaos of the family beaches.” The adult-exclusive areas of Lookout Cay include a  beach  and separate dining areas.

High expectations from cruisers

Disney first announced Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point in 2019. Anticipation grew as the cruise line industry bounced back following the pandemic.

Sarah Gilliland, founder of  On the Road with Sarah  and Managing Travel Editor for Wealth of Geeks, emphasizes the stiff competition. She notes, “It all sounds good on paper, but the real test will be seeing how the island’s first visitors receive it. So far, it looks a little more exciting than Castaway Cay but not as exciting as Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay. It’s difficult to complete with a water park!”

To impress avid cruisers, duBois says Disney is rising to the occasion. “Lighthouse Point will exceed expectations compared to Castaway Cay and even other cruise line private islands. Disney has learned a lot over the years of operating Castaway Cay, and that knowledge is finally being used by finalizing Lighthouse Point.”

Disney Cruise Line’s initial itineraries  include Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on 3-, 4-, and 5-night Bahamian Cruises out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and 10-night Southern  Caribbean cruises  out of Port Canaveral, Florida.

P&O Cruises Australia being shut down in 2025, refunds offered

  • Grace Thomas

Watch: The Pacific Explorer's final ever sailing from Auckland will depart on October 30. Credits: Video - Newshub; Image - P&O Cruises Australia.

Australian cruise brand P&O is being axed and will cease to exist next year as part of a "strategic" move by its parent company Carnival Corporation & plc.

The P&O Pacific Explorer, which operates for some months of the year out of New Zealand, is being retired in February and refunds are being offered to customers booked on subsequent trips.

P&O Cruises Australia's other two cruise liners - the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure - will be transitioned to Carnival Cruise Line branding.

Carnival Corporation CEO Josh Weinstein blamed the move on "the strategic reality of the South Pacific's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs".

More from Newshub

P&O is a highly recognisable Australian brand that has been operating since 1932.

The Pacific Explorer's maiden voyage with P&O Cruises was in 2017 and it is set to return to Auckland next month, where it will be based until October.

When it was here last year, cruise director Damian Hewitt said it was a special ship that was a great option for first-timers.

"There's just something about this ship. It's got heart to it - it's not huge but it's not small either," Hewitt told Newshub at the time .

"The crew feel like family. They see the guests a lot more, they want to spend time with them and you want to spend time with them because all you're doing is walking past them and you're with them. You see them a lot more. There's something about that that makes this ship a bit more relaxing, a bit more like home and a bit more comfortable."

For customers booked on Pacific Explorer cruises before March, 2025 the company says those will operate normally.

Currently, the final-ever Pacific Explorer sailing to depart Auckland is set to do so on October 30 for a five-night one-way cruise to Melbourne.

New Zealand customers affected by the cancelled sailings will be contacted directly, the company said in a statement on its website .

"In early 2025 P&O Cruises Australia brand will be sunset and its operations integrated into sister line, Carnival Cruise Line. As a result, all itineraries on Pacific Explorer scheduled to sail after March 2, 2025 are being cancelled," the statement reads.

"If you are booked on one of these itineraries you will be contacted by guest services in the coming days with refund details. We apologise that this change has been necessary.

"If you are booked to cruise before this date, your itinerary is unaffected and we look forward to welcoming you onboard soon.

"We are all immensely proud of P&O Cruises Australia's 90-year heritage of dedicated operations in the region and Carnival Cruise Line are honoured to carry forward its storied legacy and continue to deliver the same onboard experiences and itineraries."

Disney Plans to Expand Parks Investment, Doubling Capital Expenditures Over 10 Years

The Walt Disney Company is developing plans to accelerate and expand investment in its Parks, Experiences and Products segment to nearly double capital expenditures over the course of approximately 10 years to roughly $60 billion, including by investing in expanding and enhancing domestic and international parks and cruise line capacity.

Today, Senior Disney executives, including Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger and Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro, gathered with Wall Street analysts and investors at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida for an investor summit focused on Disney’s Parks business and its track record of investing aggressively and intelligently in experiences that leverage the powerful and ever-growing library of Disney stories, which has proven incredibly effective.

“We’re incredibly mindful of the financial underpinning of the company, the need to continue to grow in terms of bottom line, the need to invest wisely so that we’re increasing the returns on invested capital, and the need to maintain a balance sheet, for a variety of reasons,” said Bob Iger. “The company is able to absorb those costs and continue to grow the bottom line and look expansively at how we return value and capital to our shareholders.”

“We have an ambitious growth story that is supported by a proven track record and a bold vision for the future of our Parks business,” said D’Amaro.

Central to the business’s growth strategy will be a focus on stories, scale, and fans.

All over the world, Disney leverages its incomparable library of intellectual property through immersive storytelling experiences in its Parks and Resorts, on board its cruise ships, and through its consumer products and licensing business. The Parks business serves as a powerful platform where Disney’s beloved stories come to life in innovative ways, and where fans across generations and geographies can connect with and explore the Disney brands and franchises they love, from Avatar to Zootopia, and everything in between.

Disney continuously reimagines its theme park offerings to appeal to more guests by incorporating new stories from its popular films and series. Disney Parks has seen growth following previous periods of significant investment, which included the additions of Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World, Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure and Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris, and more.

Today, as Disney considers future growth opportunities, there is a deep well of stories that have yet to be fully explored in its theme parks.

Already, new Frozen-themed lands are coming to Hong Kong Disneyland, Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris and Tokyo Disney Resort, as well as a Zootopia-themed land at Shanghai Disney Resort. However, Disney will explore even more characters and franchises, including some that haven’t been leveraged extensively to date, as it embarks on a new period of significant growth domestically and internationally in its parks and resorts.

“We have a wealth of untapped stories to bring to life across our business,” said D’Amaro. “Frozen, one of the most successful and popular animated franchises of all time, could have a presence at the Disneyland Resort. Wakanda has yet to be brought to life. The world of Coco is just waiting to be explored. There’s a lot of storytelling opportunity.”

Today, Disney has the largest physical footprint of any global theme park travel business, with 12 parks across six sites around the world. [1] Its newest resort, Shanghai Disney Resort, opened in 2016. Disney Cruise Line visits 94 ports in 40 countries, and Disney’s industry-leading consumer products division brings Disney IP into fans’ homes across the globe.

Notably, Walt Disney World Resort is twice the size of the island of Manhattan, Disneyland is the most “Instagrammed” place on Earth, and tens of millions of guests travel on Disney’s transportation networks each year.

Disney’s Parks business is a key driver of value creation for the company, and positive segment results in recent past quarters through FY23Q3 have come in part from strong performance at Disney’s international parks, particularly those in Asia. Shanghai Disney Resort and Hong Kong Disneyland, which have both shown meaningful growth coming out of the pandemic through Q3 FY23, have even further growth opportunities with the expansions set to open later this year.

However, in addition to development plans already underway, there is significant room for further expansion on land and at sea.

“We stand alone when it comes to scale,” said D’Amaro. “And while our scale is impressive, we have no shortage of space or regions of the world in which to tell new stories.”

In fact, Disney Parks has over 1,000 acres of land for possible future development to expand theme park space across its existing sites – the equivalent of about seven new Disneyland Parks.

Meanwhile, Disney Cruise Line serves as a powerful ambassador for the brand in ports and markets around the globe beyond its theme parks, including Australia and New Zealand for the first time later this year, extending the reach of Disney’s high-quality experiences. As previously announced, over the next two years, Disney will nearly double the worldwide capacity of its cruise line, adding two ships in fiscal year 2025 and another in 2026, delivering even further growth potential and introducing new markets to Disney experiences, including a new homeport in Singapore beginning in 2025 to expand its reach further into the Asia-Pacific region.

Today, Disney has seven of the top ten most attended theme parks in the world, including Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park, which has been the #1 attended theme park on earth for decades. Disney Parks welcome approximately 100 million guests each year.

Yet there is still enormous untapped potential for reaching more consumers. According to Disney’s internal research, there is an addressable market of more than 700 million people with high Disney affinity it has yet to reach with its Parks. In fact, for every one guest who visits a Disney Park, there are more than ten people with Disney affinity who do not visit the Parks. [2]

“Ultimately what is most important to us is the relationship that we have with every guest,” said D’Amaro. “Guests can spend a day with us at our Parks, a week with us on a Cruise, or the rest of their lives with us through Disney Vacation Club membership.”

As Disney expands its footprint and offerings, not only will the company be able to reach more of its existing fans, but it will create new fans and loyal consumers.

As the company develops plans to accelerate and expand investment in its Parks business, it looks forward to introducing fans to more of the most powerful characters and stories, expanding its global footprint, advancing its state-of-the-art commercial capabilities, and leveraging its unmatched global talent to forge relationships with new generations of fans around the world.

“Throughout our history, we’ve created enormous growth by investing the right amount of capital into the right projects at the right moment,” said Iger. “We are planning to turbocharge our growth yet again with a robust amount of strategic investment in this business.”

The fold of P&O Cruises Australia signals the end of Australian-branded cruising

Analysis The fold of P&O Cruises Australia signals the end of Australian-branded cruising

A cruiseliner nexts to the Sydney Harbour Bridge

In 1981 Australia was on the cusp of a recession that would usher in the Hawke and Keating years.

And one Aussie-branded company, P&O Cruises Australia, was selling the idea of escaping the rat race by taking to the high seas .

But now the brand is set to fold as the harsh economic realities of the 2020s take their toll.

Its parent company, the Miami-based Carnival, has decided it's too expensive to operate the brand in Australia.

There will be job losses in Carnival's Sydney office, and one of three ships under the P&O brand will be retired, with the other two absorbed into Carnival's fleet.

Griffith University's Cruise & Maritime researcher Johnnel Smith called the decision "heartbreaking".

"It's sad news all-round," she said

"Our beloved P&O Cruises will be leaving the Australian market."

It's understood P&O Cruises Australia will be absorbed by the Carnival Cruise Line brand.

"It's a cessation of the [Australian-branded] cruising," Ms Smith adds.

"Basically Carnival is taking over all of the ships."

Restructure not uncommon in cruise industry

To be clear, P&O Cruises Australia is not insolvent.

Ms Smith explains there's "lots of restructure" in the cruise industry, especially post-pandemic.

"There's been a lot of restructuring – a lot of bigger cruise lines, you take over smaller ones," she says.

"I wouldn't say [the business] is a bust.

"I would say it's an improvement."

Which is precisely how Carnival Corporation chief executive officer Josh Weinstein described the move.

"Given the strategic reality of the South Pacific's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region," he said.

More competition in the cruise market

The fundamental problem is P&O Cruises Australia has become, as far as US bosses are concerned, a high cost and uncompetitive operation.

Costs, including port fees and fuel, are relatively high in Australia and make it one of the most expensive regions to operate a cruise line.

Carnival told the ABC it viewed the Australian P&O brand as a drag on the overall business.

Or to put it bluntly, the business isn't turning a big enough profit for the company's American shareholders.

Between 10 and 20 jobs will be lost in Australia and Carnival says crew members will be assigned to other ships, although it's not clear where or how.

Competition was also an unwelcome factor for P&O, Ms Smith says.

"This past cruise season we had Disney and Virgin Voyages come Down Under for the first time," she said.

"And so when it comes to the level of competition taking place in the cruise market, Aussies are cruising, and all it means is that [you need to be] a bit more competitive [but] it takes cash to care."

"It costs a lot of money to stay competitive and to remain top of mind [for travellers]."

Fears for future itineraries

It's the end of an era for the popular brand which set sail from Sydney on December 23, 1932, on a seven-day itinerary calling at Brisbane and Norfolk Island.

The company's first permanent ship in Australia, called the "Fairstar" and heavily promoted as 'the fun ship', was part of the fleet for nine years until 1997.

The brand's fold has also led to doubts about the future of cruises across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand for many cruise goers, Ms Smith says.

"People are a bit concerned that, in addition to taking over this cruise line, that there are going to be changes to the itineraries," she said.

"It's a major concern.

"And especially also value for money because P&O does provide a lot of value for money for cruises."

Passengers booked onto P&O Cruises this year won't be affected, while guests booked for next year will have the option for a full refund.
