Is it safe to ride a helicopter while pregnant

Smiling women wearing headset in helicopter

Never will a helicopter tour company reject a pregnant women on a helicopter ride, in fact; most operators will be accommodating to you.

It is completely safe to ride a helicopter while pregnant, but only if you're at a stage of comfort. Play it safe by asking your doctor, all while with answers to hand with concerns that may arise. Only participate in smooth helicopter ride well avoiding landing tour or doors off which can be a little too demanding .

It is safe to ride in a helicopter

Check with your doctor, climb in/out of helicopter, discomfort for heavy pregnancy, fasten seatbelt comfortably.

Nothing can stop you flying as a newly or at a stage of heavy pregnancy; operators will be sure to do there best to accommodate you.

You will need to be physically able still, and while they will assist you if you are flying alone, it will be better if you bring something along to take care of you.

Things to know as a pregnant women taking a helicopter ride is this; you'll need to scoot over to your seat, fasten a seatbelt, and climb in and out of a helicopter.

So what that means for you is knowing the small details you haven't though off, so this will include...

You will be sat low so knee's will be high; you'll climb up a single step into the helicopter with a high reach; well you'll need to comfortably fasten and wear a seatbelt.

Pregnant women can fly in a helicopter with little in the way of health or baby concerns.

If you are at a stage of a healthy pregnancy, nothing should stop you taking a helicopter ride while pregnant.

In fact, pregnant women take a helicopter ride all the time with no medical issues arising at the time of the flight or later in the pregnancy.

Its like this, unlike flying in a light aircraft or a compressed airliner, helicopters fly at a low attitude, with uncompressed cabins.

So in that respect, there's no difficulty for pregnant women who take helicopter rides.

Safety for pregnant women is a priority for tour operators, and for all passengers as it happens - so will not allow it if they didn't think it was safe for pregnant women.

Saying that, that is not true if you were to take a thrilling helicopter ride; such as low flying in canyons, or a doors off helicopter ride in Kauai, Hawaii.

You will also want to avoid a helicopter landing tour in a harsh environment like the Grand Canyon, where it can be a problem for people who are not pregnant.

When it all comes down to it, you should or would want to contact your doctor or primary Physician if you know you're taking a helicopter ride.

Contact them over the phone as a physical checkup is not needed.

If asking the doctor, he or she may want to know details of the helicopter ride, so its vital you know the details beforehand.

What that means is, know how long the helicopter ride is; if you will be helping yourself in and out of the chopper; or if it would be a smooth or thrilling helicopter ride.

If the doctor is concerned about the attitude you will be flying; let them know most helicopter rides or tours fly between 500 to 2500 feet - or 3000 feet maximum.

What else the doctor might be concerned with is if the helicopter manoeuvres in a way that will put pressure on your tummy from the seat belt.

So know in advanced what expect on the helicopter ride ; if its a smooth or thrilling ride, even if it will be hot or cold in the cabin.

Pregnant women who take a helicopter ride should be physically able to climb in and out of the helicopter by themselves.

Helicopter tour operators can be accommodating to passengers who are less able, so will help you out if pregnant.

If you are flying with your other-half, a friend or family member; then there should not be a problem with them assisting you in and out of the helicopter.

Know that generally speaking, the type of helicopter used will include a skid type landing gear, which can be 1 to 2 feet off the ground.

Its not one big step for everyone, as there is usually a middle bar passengers can step onto well climbing into the helicopter.

Not all helicopter tour operators offer a specific seat, so you may need to scoot over to the middle or far side seat - but again, the company will try to make things easy.

So no your limits, if you are too far along in your pregnancy with the thought of climbing precariously in or out of a helicopter, then it might not be a good time.

Where the thought of a helicopter ride for pregnancy women might become an issue is at there third trimester - week 29 to week 40, or seven, eight and nine months.

That is where a doctor may ask you not to take the helicopter ride for the health of the baby.

Only you will know this far along in the pregnancy if you are fully capable of taking a helicopter ride that does require a little physically activity, namely...

Getting in and out of the helicopter, has that big tummy will sure not make it easy as it will be made difficult to bring your knee's up.

Helicopter seating is not known for luxury or comfort, so the low positioning of the seats will cause for your knees to be set high.

Which is not an easy feat for heavily pregnant women. So do think about the seating arrangement, as thinks will get uncomfortable, with tightness a possibility too.

Where else women don't think about while pregnant, is the seatbelt needs to wrap around your tummy. So how might that effect you?

Well for heavily pregnant women, its not easy feat to that get the seat belt safely fastened as your tummy will become an issue.

Luckily, helicopter tour operators will still be accommodating so will extend the seatbelt for you.

In which case you will need to phone ahead as to make sure they know a heavily pregnant women will be flying, so she will have issues with the seatbelt.

Do not accept anything less than a seatbelt that is wrapped around comfortably.

Too tight seatbelt will be uncomfortable for you in the duration of the flight, and more importantly, it won't be healthy for the baby.

So speak up and make sure you let the staff know if you're no comfortable with the seatbelt - or if not sitting comfortably overall, as that matters a lot too.

Don't be the one that fastens or undoes the seat belt yourself, as the stretching won't be comfortable, so allow a friend, hubby or family member to do it for you.

Depending on the theme of the helicopter ride you will be participating in, most helicopter tour companies will not reject pregnant women from flying.

Reason for that is, a helicopter ride flies at a low attitude with no compressed cabin or manoeuvring that could trouble you.

So with that in mind, no thrilling, buzz type helicopter rides for you; keep it to smooth, calm helicopter rides with doors on.

Be sure to check your doctor first, while having all answers to his or her questions to hand, such as: how high you will be flying; if its a calm or thrilling ride; and what about the seating arrangement.

All this should be asked by you to the helicopter tour company; as they fly pregnant women all the time, so have the answers for you.

They will need you to be physically capable of climbing in and out of the chopper, or have someone with you who can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

❀ MAUNA LOA HELICOPTER TOURS ❀

  • Chevron down What are the restrictions for a Doors-Off flight?

Our Oʻahu and Kauaʻi flights are flown with the Doors-Off in our R44. Every seat is a window seat. If flying the ʻOhana Experienceʻ on Kauaʻi in our R66, there are 3 of 4 window seats. You may choose to fly with the Doors-Off on Hawaiʻi Island, aka the Big Island, for a nominal fee. Children may sit next to an open door if they are 12 years or older. Children 7 – 11 need to sit next to a closed door.

  • Chevron down When is the best time to go on a helicopter tour?

There is no short answer. Although Hawai’i enjoys plentiful sunshine year-round, we do experience summer and winter seasons. Precise flying weather conditions are often impossible to predict, especially in winter, because of the interplay of dynamic weather patterns and the island’s unique topography. Due to the combination of high mountainous peaks and shoreline throughout the islands, each hour of the day shows each island, literally, in a different light. Wind speeds and cloud formation also change throughout the day, resulting from variations in temperature. Ultimately, the time of day you book depends on your preference and itinerary, but we recommend choosing a tour date early on in your stay. This allows you more opportunities to find a different tour time with us should the weather not cooperate for the original flight.

  • Chevron down Will there be other passengers on our flight?

All Mauna Loa Helicopter tours are private unless you are booking an “Ohana Experience” on Kauai. Please check the minimum passenger requirement for each tour type (which ranges from 2-4 passengers). Parties that do not meet the minimum requirement, will be subject to purchasing the minimum passenger pricing. Should you pay for three person minimum you are able to add more passengers if you pay for the extra chair on the aircraft, example the aircraft hold 4 passengers you paid for the three-passenger minimum you are only able to bring three passengers that you have paid for should you want to add a fourth person you need to pay for the fourth passenger. For larger parties, bookings will be split into multiple helicopters depending on availability take-off time may vary.

  • Chevron down I am traveling by myself. Can I take your tour?

ALL Islands:

Yes, if you are on Kauaʻi, we offer the ʻOhana Experienceʻ which is a shared aircraft. You may also choose to pay for the minimum seat requirement of the specific tour looking to book. You would have the entire aircraft to yourself as majority of our tours are private and different parties are not combined.

Call to inquire for solo passengers.

  • Chevron down What is better for me, a doors-on or doors-off helicopter tour?

Both options allow for optimal viewing, as each window seat has wide windows extending from the top of your head to your waist. The choice to fly with or without doors depends on your priorities and comfort level. In a closed aircraft, you are shielded from wind exposure and you will hear music and narration clearly. It is a very serene way of taking in the scenery through the large windows. If you are game for a more visceral experience or photography is important to you, our doors-off adventure is for you. Floor-to-ceiling openings allow you to look straight down into waterfalls and sea caves, and glare from windows in your photos is no factor. Because the helicopter is open to the elements, you will be exposed to wind and cooler temperatures caused by airspeed and altitude. For your comfort, please follow our recommendations on how to dress appropriately for your doors-off helicopter flight. The airframe does protect you and your camera equipment well during light showers or mist. If some members of your party would like the extra comfort of a door, we can remove some doors and leave others on. However, all seating arrangements are subject to weight and balance calculations. For doors-on and doors-off tours, please abide by our recommendations on how to prepare for your flight so you can make the most of it. We don’t charge any more either way you choose.

  • Chevron down What will we see on our private helicopter tour?

On these magnificent islands, there is much to be discovered by air. Certain of the countless remarkable features have, deservedly, garnered special interest and are most popular for aerial viewing. Weather permitting, our pilots will explore with you all of each island’s most famous geological features as outlined in our tour descriptions. Sometimes, wind and weather conditions necessitate a deviation from the usual tour route. In these instances, our pilots will attempt to show off other spectacular scenery not normally included on the tours, as all islands offer more hidden wonders to please the eye than can possibly be covered on a single flight. We guarantee to showcase spectacular scenery and breathtaking views that are not obtainable by car or trail.

  • Chevron down What happens if it is cloudy or rainy on the day of our tour?

Along with ample sunshine, the islands are also blessed with abundant daily rainfall, which nourishes the lushness and creates the erosive force that continues to shape all the fascinating geology. Most of the island’s waterfalls are sustained only by rainfall, and misty showers often delight passengers with rainbows along the tour. Usually, our typical high cumulus clouds and precipitation do not diminish the quality of your tour, but instead give it dimension and add other exciting facets to your experience. However, if the pilot determines that prevailing visibility, cloud cover, or wind speeds do not allow for a good air tour, or if it is not safe to fly, we will of course cancel the flight. Because weather conditions can change dramatically day to day and hour by hour, the pilots do have up until the flight time to make a decision. Decisions often cannot be made prior to check in.

  • Chevron down What if our flight gets canceled due to weather?

If you purchase your reservation online, full payment is collected at the time of the booking. If we cancel a flight due to weather, there is naturally no fee for you whatsoever, your payment will be returned, and you are not required to rebook your tour. We are happy to reschedule your flight based on availability.

The tour may be adjusted or canceled up to 40 minutes prior to departure, in accordance with MLHT’s policies. Rescheduling will be based on the earliest available timeslot.

  • Chevron down What is your cancellation policy

Tours may be canceled or changed up to 24 hours prior to the scheduled flight time without incurring a fee. Tours canceled less than 24 hours before the scheduled time, or passengers who fail to show up or are 15 minutes late for check in, will be billed the full price for the tour. Tours rescheduled past the 24 hours will be subject to a $100 rescheduling fee.

  • Chevron down Do you offer any discounts?

We do offer Kama’aina discount of 10% off with a valid Hawai’i ID or proof of Hawai’i residency at the time of check in.

Special offers and discounts can be found from time to time on Instagram @maunaloahelitours

  • Chevron down What is the passenger weight limitation?

We do not impose any weight surcharges for individual or combined passenger weights. Per FAA regulations, all passengers plus carry-on items will be weighed at check-in.

Kaua’i & O’ahu:

Total weight per person is restricted to 275 pounds per person and no more than 650 pounds as a group total. If the individual and/or group weight limit is exceeded at check in, the flight will not be accommodated and are subject to the full price.

Big Island (Depends on Tour booked):

Big Island Experience Tour: Total weight per person is restricted to 285lbs per person and no more than 700 pounds as a group. If the individual weight limit is exceeded at check in, the flight will not be accommodated and are subject to the full price. If the group weight limit is exceeded, you will be subject to a $200 refueling fee.

Magical Waterfall Tour: Total weight per person is restricted to 285lbs per person and no more than 700 pounds as a group. If the individual and/or group weight limit is exceeded at check in, the flight will not be accommodated and are subject to the full price.

Kona Coast & Kona Coast Sunset Tour: Total weight per person is restricted to 275 pounds per person and no more than 650 pounds as a group total. If the individual and/or group weight limit is exceeded at check in, the flight will not be accommodated and are subject to the full price.

  • Chevron down I am pregnant. Can I go on your tour?

You are most welcome to fly with us through the seventh month of your pregnancy, providing you feel comfortable with the motion of the helicopter in the air, as well as wearing a regular (three-point) seatbelt across your body.

  • Chevron down What is your policy for children on the flight?

For everyone’s safety, we do not permit lap seating. Each passenger, including your child, must be secured with a regular-sized seatbelt in his or her individual seat. For this reason, our minimum passenger age is 7 years to fly with the doors on or 12 years to fly with the doors off.

  • Chevron down What is the best seat for photographs?

On our aircraft, other than the R66 on the Big Island and O’ahu, there are no middle seats, so each passenger can enjoy the scenery to the fullest from his or her guaranteed window seat. Your pilot sits in the front right seat, which leaves the front left and a rear left and right seat for passengers.

Our pilots are skillful in selecting a flight path that affords passengers on both sides of the aircraft the same amazing views.

  • Chevron down Can I choose my seat?

In terms of seating arrangements, our first priority is safety, meaning we seat people in the best spot for the weight and balance of the aircraft. Our next consideration is where passengers would like to sit and what seat will be the best for their experience. We will be happy to accommodate your individual preferences, weight and balance permitting. Most couples like to sit together in the back of the helicopter so they can better share the experience, lean over and see out both sides, and point things out to one another. There is emotional value to sitting together, which for most people is higher than any added viewing value obtained from the front left seat. The open cabin design also allows rear passengers viewing ahead through the cockpit window.

  • Chevron down How do we prepare for our flight?

Your check-in time is 40 minutes prior to your flight time. Per FAA regulations, we need to determine each passenger’s exact weight including shoes, all clothing, and personal belongings such as camera equipment and purses. It is therefore necessary that you bring to your check-in everything that you would like to wear and have with you on your tour. You do not need to actually wear your warm layers at check-in, but you do need to hold them when stepping onto our scale. On a doors-on flight, we recommend that you wear dark outer layers to minimize reflection in the windows during photography. Because you are not exposed to the elements, whatever clothing you are comfortable with at sea level is adequate for your flight. An open-door experience is exciting and fun and we want you to enjoy your flight without being distracted by wind or chill. A warm outer layer that you can zip up, such as a windproof jacket, is ideal. We strongly advise against wind-susceptible clothing such as dresses and hooded items. In winter, long pants are highly recommended. To keep you and your belongings safe, we cannot permit any loose objects on your doors-off flight. This includes hats, visors, scarves, hair clips, and strapless sandals. Eyeglasses are permissible. Hair that is long enough should be tied tightly with an elastic band. Any equipment must be secured to you via a strap.

  • Chevron down Do I need to worry about motion sickness?

Our experienced pilots choose the best flight path given prevailing wind speeds and topography, avoiding areas of known turbulence and making gentle turns and altitude changes. Very few passengers experience any queasiness. However, if you are particularly prone to motion sickness, we do recommend that you prepare with oral motion‐sickness medication so you can enjoy your flight, free from worry.

  • Chevron down Can we talk to the pilot during the tour?

Yes, you can! Except during critical flight stages, such as take‐off and landing, feel free to ask a question, share impressions or comments, and engage with the others onboard. We provide inter‐communication between all occupants of the aircraft as an added bonus.

  • Chevron down What is your safety record?

Flight safety is our principal concern, and we are proud of our impeccable safety record. We have a zero-tolerance maintenance policy, meaning any issue, regardless of its effect on airworthiness of the aircraft, is checked out promptly and thoroughly. With extensive training and flying experience, each of our pilots has acquired expert knowledge on the island’s unique weather and terrain considerations, and this knowledge is a key factor in making sound decisions and navigating the skies safely. For your added safety, we do not practice “hot-loading.” We shut down our aircraft in between all tours to allow for a thorough pre-flight inspection prior to each and every tour.

  • Chevron down Do I tip my pilot?

Tipping is not required but is always appreciated.

  • Chevron down Is booking fee refundable?

*Booking Fee is non-refundable.

Riding in a helicopter provides a thrilling opportunity to see the beautiful Smoky Mountains area from a different perspective. Scenic Helicopter Tours prides itself on quality over quantity. Our helicopters are equipped with comfortable, leather passenger seats and expansive windows for the best visibility. Before your flight, your pilot will give you a safety briefing. Seating arrangements are determined by the weight and balance of the aircraft by the pilot. Our pilots are your aerial adventure guides and will make your tour an exceptional and memorable experience!

You don’t need to bring anything apart from your camera for taking videos and photos. You may also bring your cellphone for taking photos. We also suggest wearing comfortable shoes and dark-colored clothing for taking better photos. Light-colored clothing reflects on the transparent windows and can cause undesirable flares in your photos. This is why it is recommended to wear dark clothing when riding in a helicopter.

The maximum per-passenger seat rating is 300 pounds. If one or more persons in your party exceed the maximum weight requirement per seat, we can still accommodate you in our next larger-sized aircraft that holds up to 4 or 6 passengers. Please call for pricing and scheduling options.

Note: Per FAA regulations and in the interest of your safety, all passengers must be weighed upon arrival. But don’t worry, only the flight crew will have access to passenger weights, and all information will be kept confidential.

Absolutely! One of our biggest thrills is to enable those who cannot hike the back-country trails to still enjoy the beauty of our area.

Our flights are typically very smooth as if you were riding in a car. That being said, no two people are alike and weather conditions can play a role in helicopter movement.

Yes, we often welcome pregnant women to fly with Scenic Helicopters. We always recommend checking with your doctor prior to booking.

The Smoky Mountains region is one of the best places in the world for helicopter experiences. On occasion, poor visibility or very high winds may cause a flight delay. Cancellations are typically not an issue. In the case of a delay, you may either re-book the flight for a later date or wait until the pilot clears you for flying.

However, if we need to cancel a tour for any reason, we will contact you and offer you the option to reschedule. If rescheduling is not a possibility (due to travel plans, for instance), we will refund the full amount.

A sudden change of plans? Notify us more than 24 hours in advance of your flight’s departure and we will happily rebook your flight for a later available date or time at no extra cost. No-shows will be charged in full with no refunds.

Please arrive about 20 to 30 minutes prior to flight time to allow time for the safety briefing.

Our fleet consists of three different types of helicopters that can accommodate from 2 to 6 passengers depending upon the aircraft.

There is no age limit. We want everyone to experience the joy of flying! Children aged 23 months and under qualify as lap children. So if you don’t mind them riding in your lap, they can ride at no extra charge.

To keep our prices affordable, we do fill all seats for each flight. The seating configuration varies per helicopter and maxes out at six guests for our largest aircraft. Private (charter) flights are available.

All of our tours depart from our heliport located at 1949 Winfield Dunn Parkway, Sevierville, Tennessee. For your convenience, we also have an information/reservations office located at 1965 Parkway in Pigeon Forge.

No. Title 14 of The Code of Federal Regulations, Part 382.117, states that animals cannot fly if “the animal obstructs an aisle or other area that must remain unobstructed to facilitate an emergency evacuation.” Every exit and aisle on a helicopter is an emergency exit and aisle. Additionally, as no one can be certain of how an animal will react in a high-stress situation, their access to the flight controls is a major safety concern to all aboard the helicopter.

Pilot gratuities are accepted and greatly appreciated.

Yes, we can accommodate most requests. If you have an area in particular that you wish to fly over, please make your requests at the time of reservation or contact us now .

First helicopter tour – advice on how to prepare, what to expect

First time in a heliocpter

Flying in a helicopter is a thrilling experience, and everyone must try it at least once in their lifetime.

However, some people find it a little overwhelming, especially when it is their first time onboard a helicopter.

After speaking to a lot of people who have been on multiple tours, we have come up with a list of tips on how you can enjoy your first helicopter tour.

Table of contents

Focus on reducing your anxiety.

You can start the day of your helicopter tour with some deep breathing and meditation.

Visualizing what the flight experience will be like also helps – watching a few videos can help you visualize better.

If you have booked the helicopter tour with a partner, talk to them about it.

There is no harm in consulting your doctor and get some anti-anxiety medication to help you during the flight.

Trust the Pilot and the helicopter

Helicopter tour pilot

You don’t need to be nervous about flying, for it is one of the safest forms of travel – much safer than car travel.

Car accidents outnumber flying accidents by a huge margin every year.

Helicopter pilots are highly trained professionals with many hours of helicopter flying experience.

They have flown the same helicopter, many times in the same route, in a variety of weather conditions.

The helicopter

If you land up at the airport early, you can see that every helicopter undergoes a battery of tests before every flight.

After the helicopter is refueled, helicopter maintenance engineers go through their protocol of checks to see if it is airworthy, and only after their approval does the helicopter take off.

Always listen to the Pilot

Before the helicopter takes off, the Pilot will give you a safety briefing. Listen to every word he/she says.

Helicopter pilot briefing tourists

When the Pilot points out where they have kept the first aid kit, and the life jackets, make a note of it.

Since seats are assigned based on the weight of every passenger (to balance the helicopter), you must sit in your assigned seat.

Be aware of in-flight safety measures

For the safety of the passengers, helicopters have many in-flight safety measures built-in.

To ensure passengers don’t get tossed around when the helicopters swoop and serve, they must wear seatbelts all through the flight.

Everybody also gets noise-canceling headphones to keep the noise of the helicopter away and also to communicate with the Pilot.

The chopper also has fire extinguishers for use in case of fire.

All helicopters also have life jackets for use during a water landing and emergency kits, which contain ropes, knives, flares, and other emergency equipment.

Pilot’s safety briefing

The helicopter tour pilot’s safety briefing usually revolves around these topics –

Getting in and out of the chopper

It is important to follow the safety regulations even while getting in and out of the tour helicopter.

Being aware of how to approach and leave a helicopter becomes even more important if your tour includes a landing, for a hike, a picnic, or for just some photographs.

Rules to approach and leave the helicopter

Dress up in your most comfortable clothes

During your helicopter tour dress up in layers because it stay comfortable during both summer and winter.

During summer, it can get a little colder (especially if it is a doors-off helicopter) once you gain altitude.

Wear sneakers or shoes instead of sandals and flipflops.

Hats and lose hair are a strict no.

Don’t panic during turbulence

Most of your helicopter ride is going to be smooth.

However, during take-off and landing, it is normal to have some turbulence.

Some first-timers start panicking during taking off and then don’t enjoy their trip at all.

The trick is in knowing that take off turbulence is normal, and the moment the helicopter gains altitude, the ride will be smooth again.
