Accommodation
Made famous in the movie of Agatha Christie's 'Death on the Nile', the boat has 18 cabins and five suites laid out over two decks.
The Journey
Each day is mapped out with timings for shore excursions and meals. The crew are utterly charming, and nothing is too much trouble. There are professional, experienced guides on board who take you to the sights. Steam Ship Sudan plies the waters of the Nile between Luxor and Aswan on a four night itinerary, and between Aswan and Luxor on a three night itinerary.
Facilities & Services
The upper deck has comfortable sunbeds and chairs to snooze, read, draw, and watch the lush greenery slide by as you glide along.
Weather & Seasons
Egypt has year-round sun, and almost no rain. Daytime temperatures range from pleasantly warm in the winter to very hot in the summer. Northerly cities such as Cairo and Alexandria are generally about 5ºC cooler than southerly areas such as Aswan and Abu Simbel.
Getting Here
Departures are from Luxor or Aswan. To reach the docks, we recommend flying from Cairo to either destination. To Luxor it's an hour, and to Aswan it's 90 minutes. There are several daily flights, so there's no need to stay overnight in Cairo unless you wish to.

Nile cruising on the ship that inspired Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile
Author: Ulrike Lemmin-Woolfrey
Published on: 17 February 2022
Updated on: 11 May 2022
Nile cruise holidays have long been a popular option for those keen to explore multiple Egypt hotspots. With the new Death on the Nile film now out, what's a Nile river cruise like?
For years I had been wanting to cruise down the Nile. Not with hundreds of other passengers on a glass-encased, modern ship, but in style and with as few fellow passengers as possible.
It was reading an interview with celebrity interior designer Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen, who cruised down the Nile with his wife for their 30th wedding anniversary, that showed me the way. I finally had the name of a ship that might just tick all the right boxes: the SS Sudan.
Researching the SS Sudan further revived memories of the book Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie, the subsequent 1978 film version with Peter Ustinov as detective Hercule Poirot, and the 2004 TV version with David Suchet, all of which I loved.
A new film version of Death on the Nile has hit the cinema screens this month starring Kenneth Branagh as Poirot, catering to a hungry audience who love a bit of sleuthing with a setting that is exotic as well as stylish.
The books and three films have one thing in common: the Steamship Sudan. This is the ship on which Agatha Christie sailed in 1933 and started on her book, while the three movies were filmed onboard the SS Sudan, called SS Karnak in the book, and even if the films took a few directorial liberties, it is easily recognisable.
Saga announces new river cruise ship for 2025
American cruise lines to sail out of washington dc, riverside luxury cruises to launch third ship in march, tui river cruises announces first new-build ship, riviera travel ‘determined to deliver’ on new sustainability plan, edwina lonsdale on why river cruises rock, uniworld announces new ‘bucket-list’ itineraries, how to choose your excursions on an avalon waterways' river cruise, a-rosa becomes first river cruise line to offer swimming lessons, amawaterways to operate two ships on magdalena river.
Today, the ship still encompasses the glamour of travel in the 1930s, with wood-panelled cabins opening onto a wide teak veranda, fluttering white canvas shades, gleaming brass instruments, comfortable wicker chairs, and a ratio of 63 crew to roughly 45 passengers.
The SS Sudan is one of two steamships that Thomas Cook used to ferry rich travellers between Luxor and Aswan in the early 1900s, when archaeologists making spectacular discoveries of ancient Egyptian treasures along the Nile, drew wealthy tourists to Egypt on the so-called Grand Tour, which was en vogue then.

With the Old Winter Palace Hotel in Luxor and the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan and the SS Sudan in between, luxury could be assured at every step, forgoing most of the climatic and logistic hardships that tourists potentially faced in Egypt in those days.
After a few gentle restorations and modernisations over the years, the SS Sudan remains the only true and original paddle steamer on the Nile and keeps up the old-world glamour of travel along its trips up and down the Nile.
Embarking on the SS Sudan, now owned by a French travel company, I caught a first glimpse of my fellow passengers. I was joined by passengers from France, Switzerland, the UK and Spain.
There were few enough guests to allow the feeling of exclusivity, but enough to make the journey interesting. A six-day, five-night trip lay ahead, with scheduled excursions, meals on board, even a screening of the Death on the Nile movie on the itinerary, in the very bar used as a murder scene in the film.
The five suites and 18 cabins on the ship are all on one level, above the restaurant and bar, and below the sundeck, with the superior suites at the bow and stern. The cabins are comfortable, with either double or twin beds, armchairs, a minibar, wardrobes, and ensuite bathrooms.

Outside of each cabin there are a table and wicker chairs, but the best views are had from the sundeck, where wide armchairs and sun loungers invite you to relax and just watch the life on the banks of the Nile go by.
Each day offers an excursion, ranging from Qena, a little downriver from Luxor and home to the temples of Abydos and Dendera, to a return to Luxor for the night and a visit to the Valley of the Kings, Queens, Nobles, and Artisans the next morning.
Further stops upriver are Edfu and the temple of Kom Ombo, and Aswan, with a visit to the fantastic island temple of Philae. And while each day offers an excursion, so does each day bring a few hours of daylight sailing, allowing passengers to not only enjoy time on the ship and the views along the river but also see the spectacular sunsets on the west bank of the Nile.
The excursions to the ancient Egyptian temples are simply awesome, in the literal sense: Stunning, historic, larger-than-life reminders of a mighty civilisation. And, with a guide catering to each of the small groups brought together by their preferred language staying on board throughout the journey and leading all the visits with your group, you learn an incredible amount.
But, despite the wonders of ancient Egypt’s being the reason for all of us being onboard, at times I felt quite ‘templed out’, to coin a phrase. Those peaceful hours of sailing offered a much-needed respite from an onslaught of mind-boggling information and breath-taking sights every day.

It was the SS Sudan itself with its working steam chimney and the ever-turning paddle wheel, the attention of the staff, the wonderful meals on board, and the afternoon tea with freshly baked sweet delights that made sitting on the decks during sailing such a treat.
The books I had brought along, which I had envisaged myself reading sitting on the wicker chair outside my cabin, remained unopened, instead, I drank in the sights along the Nile and the life going on alongside it.
I lost count how many children I waved to, how many donkeys and water buffalos I saw, how many egrets floated past standing on tiny swimming grass islands, and how many times I simply did not bother taking the camera down, but just kept on clicking.
We passed other cruise ships, with people splashing in the onboard pool, or even dancing in the onboard club. The SS Sudan did not have any of these amenities, and yet, dare I say it? I felt sorry for those passengers on the glass-encased, character-less ships.
Being on the SS Sudan was a little like being in a time-warp, having been transported back to the grand old days of travel, with comfort, style and an unobtrusive luxury that made me prefer sitting on the sundeck with a gin and tonic in hand, watching the green banks dotted with fishermen and playing children, houses with women hanging the washing on the line, small farms and some larger communities go by, and feeling utterly at ease.
The Wi-Fi onboard was too patchy to be of any use, keeping me in a cocoon away from the world outside. Which, after a twitchy few hours initially, eventually added to the appeal.

One night, we all were invited into the bar and watched David Suchet’s Poirot solve the devilish murders that Agatha Christie had conceived on this very ship, probably on this very stretch of the Nile.
The ship’s manager proudly told us he had been given a cameo role in the new 2022 Kenneth Branagh version when they filmed on board, and I simply cannot wait to see the film and relive my cruise on the Nile.
They say time travel is not possible, but sailing on the last steamship on the Nile, surrounded by history that is quite overwhelming at times, watching a day-to-day life barely changed for hundreds of years taking place alongside an ancient river, I dare say it is absolutely possible. Even if just for six days.

A unique cruise choice on the Nile, the Steamship Sudan is the most peaceful way to travel on the river. Please note that the majority of guests and crew will be French-speaking, although an English-speaking guide will be provided.
Built in 1885, for King Fouad, this steamship has had many eminent guests over the years. Agatha Christie was inspired to write Death on the Nile after travelling on the boat and decades later, the S/S Sudan provided the set for many of the film’s scenes.
With just 23 cabins, five of which are suites, there is a cosy intimate air on board. Each cabin contains period furniture (including wall-mounted telephones and brass bedsteads) and is accessed via the promenade deck.
Although there is no pool on board, there is a sun deck where you can relax. To add to the calm atmosphere, the Sudan is propelled by a hybrid diesel/steam engine, resulting in a quieter and more energy-efficient journey.
For those interested, the original workings, such as the pistons and paddle wheels, can still be seen, and the staff may allow you to visit the engine room.
Breakfasts and lunches are open buffet meals, whilst dinner is usually a set, four-course meal.

Agatha Christie Nile Cruise Tour – All Aboard the Steam Ship Sudan Used in Death on the Nile!

Did you know that you can follow in Agatha Christie’s footsteps by stepping aboard the Steam Ship Sudan in Egypt?
The oldest steamboat still running on the Nile today. You really can take your very own Agatha Christie Nile Cruise!
The queen of crime herself stepped aboard the Steam Ship Sudan to sail down the Nile. She travelled throughout Egypt in 1937. This cruise, and the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan , inspired her to write her famous novel ‘Death on the Nile’ .
Decades later, it has been the star attraction and filming location for scenes in modern film and TV adaptations. Most famously, Death on the Nile in 2004 starring David Suchet
During my Nile cruise aboard the MS Mayfair from Aswan to Luxor , I spotted the SS Sudan pulling into Kom Ombo port. I instantly recognised it and was dying to take a look around. My tour guide, Eid, used to work on board the ship and knew it well.
He also knew the manager of the Steam Ship Sudan and managed to score me a free tour! A.K.A I got to snoop around the ship for a few hours. I was over the moon with excitement!
It felt surreal to wander around the filming location of a movie I have been watching for years. Here’s a tour of Agatha Christie’s Nile Cruise, the boat used in Death on the Nile.
Agatha Christie Nile Cruise: The history of Steam Ship Sudan
The Steam Ship Sudan, or SS Sudan, is an old steamer Nile cruise ship that was built for King Fouad in 1885.
A few years before this, the legendary entrepreneur Thomas Cook acquires a permit for tourist Nile sailing. He then accepts eager tourists aboard his first Nile Cruise for Egyptian tourism in 1876. As well as Nile cruises, Cook also built the Old Winter Palace in Luxor and the Old Cataract in Aswan.
In 1911, he acquires the Steam Ship Sudan and Arabia to advertise faster cruise ships. These boats cut down the tour from Cairo to just 20 days and so more tourists were eager to step aboard.
By 1935, the Steam Ship had reached a golden age of tourism and in 1937, Agatha Christie steps onboard.
No one ever knows whether Agatha Christie intended to stay so long in Egypt. But, what we do know is that she remained here for most of that year. The SS Sudan and the Old Cataract were her muses for writing Death on the Nile.
In World War II, Egyptian tourism came to a halt. This also meant that the Steam Ship Sudan was abandoned and locked away for over 50 years.
In 2000, directors of Voyageurs du Monde bought the steamer and revived the SS Sudan to its former glory. It set sail once more in 2006 and has welcomed tourists on board ever since.
What films and shows have been filmed onboard the Steam Ship Sudan?
The famous ‘Karnak’ steamer which Agatha Christie wrote about in her novel, was based on the Steam Ship Sudan after her own cruise.
I always thought that the 1978 version of Death on the Nile was filmed onboard the Steam Ship Sudan. But, I later found out that four weeks of filming took place aboard the SS Memnon. This ship is still running as part of Seti Cruises, but only for private functions.
The SS Sudan at the time was still locked away. But, I’m sure if it was available they would have used it for the movie.
The 2004 version of Death on the Nile , starring David Suchet, was filmed on board this very ship.
There is also a new adaptation with Sir Kenneth Branagh due to be released soon and I wonder if the SS Sudan will be a filming location too!
Welcome aboard the Steam Ship Sudan
As soon as I waited on the dock at Luxor and saw the SS Sudan pull in, I felt butterflies. Seeing this ship in person and knowing I was going to come aboard was a strange feeling.
The fact that Agatha Christie would have been on this boat made me have a serious fan girl moment!
I walked down the steps and the gangplank was lifted, allowing me to come aboard and I was shown to the bar. It was a hot day in Luxor, so I was thankful for the cooling temperature of the drawing-room.
No sooner had I sat down, a kind waiter in full livery and tarboush, served me a refreshing glass of hibiscus tea.
I could see the residents reading from the ship library, which had copious copies of Death on the Nile to choose. Some of the patrons were playing board games. It was very relaxing.
The lounge and sun deck onboard the SS Sudan
Unfortunately, when I came on board the boat was at full occupancy. So, I couldn’t check out any of the cabins for myself.
But, from seeing the Death on the Nile movie and the Steam Ship Sudan website; they all look vintage boutique!
Some of the rooms have brass and antique gold wicker bed frames, and luxe deco bedding and interiors.
There are 5 suites and 18 cabins onboard the Sudan. You can even stay in the Agatha Christie Suite and a cabin dedicated to her famous detective, Hercule Poirot.
Steam Ship Sudan cabins
As we wound our way up the winding wooden staircase and over the wooden floorboards, it felt surreal. To walk along this steamer which I had seen on TV was just spectacular.
We made our way up to the lounge deck on top of the boat and found a beautiful place to pass the time and watch the world go by.
There were lounge chairs, sunbeds, tables to play chess. It really looked like the ideal place to relax with a drink and see the sights of the Nile.
I could only imagine what it would be like to catch the sunset from here. Ah, I can only dream!
A look inside the SS Sudan engine room
I always love poking my nose in to see the captain’s quarters of a ship. There’s something so interesting about modern sailing.
There’s a chair, navigation equipment and lots of shiny buttons which I didn’t understand (but so tempting to push)! Also, a phone to make calls.
You won’t find the stereotypical ships wheel like in the olden days now, although you can find it outside for show.
The engine room was also fascinating. Unlike modern cruise ships, steamships work with an engine that makes a chugging sound. You can watch it spin in the engine room.
My guide told me that it’s quite loud at night, so you can hear it while you sleep. I’m quite a light sleeper myself. But, if I was on this ship I think it would be worth it!
How much is the Agatha Christie Nile Cruise?
The Steam Ship Sudan runs two types of cruises. What’s great about these is they stop at more sites than most of the regular Nile Cruises including Dendera and Abydos (which usually cost extra);
- The Dynastic – a 6 days, 5 night river cruise that runs from Luxor down to Aswan.
- Eternal River – a 6 days, 5 night cruise from Aswan to Luxor.
Steam Ship Sudan cruise prices
Both cruises have the same rates;
- From Oct – Apr – 2400 -2700 Euros depending on your cabin.
- From May – Sept – 1900 – 2200 Euros depending on your cabin.
Special occasions and holidays may cost more.
You can also rent this boat out for special occasions. The captain told me about a murder mystery evening that was held onboard. I think I would die of excitement if I got to attend!
Do you love Agatha Christie?
If you’re gaga about Agatha Christie too and wanted to read more about her travels in Egypt. I have a few posts that I think you might love all about the hotels that she stayed in here on her travels.
You can read about the Old Winter Palace in Luxor and discover all the Agatha Christie secrets you can find within the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan.
All aboard the Steam Ship Sudan
If you’re a fan of the novel or movie Death on the Nile and the queen of crime herself, then a trip on the Steam Ship Sudan is the perfect choice for you.
Don’t miss out on travelling back in time with the Agatha Christie Nile Cruise and come aboard the Steam Ship Sudan; the oldest ship still actively running on the Nile.

Wonderful blog again. The real question though is which would you recommend - the SS Sudan or MS Mayfair?
Sophie Pearce
Hi Adrian, it really depends on your budget! I found the MS Mayfair perfect and it's a fraction of the cost. But, if money is no object the SS Sudan would be a bucket list splurge! Sophie x

Wow what an amazing review! I’m really looking forward to do this! Could you tell me how much would it cost me to do the cruise in the Agatha Christie cabin??
Hi Dan, it will probably depend on the season you go but the Agatha Christie Suite will most likely cost you around 4,000 Euro for the week! It is not cheap! I would contact the SS Sudan team at Original Travel to ask for specific rates. https://www.originaltravel.co.uk/place/steam-ship-sudan-holidays Hope this helps, Sophie x

1984 i motored down to Aswan on a then 100 odd year gaff rig schooner Boston storm built in Boston UK as a pilot cutter....at Luxor we tied up alongside the paddle steamer for a few weeks before making our way down to komombo and Aswan .
Hi Thomas! Wow, that sounds like such an adventure. I bet travelling to Egypt must have been so different back then! I would have loved to have seen it before all the attractions were overloaded with security checks haha :) Sounds like you made some memories of a lifetime! Thanks for sharing, Sophie x

Hey Sophie, thank you very much indeed, that helps! By the way, I just want to say thank you for keeping this blog. I really love the way you write about each place you visit, especially how you cover the small details that other bloggers tend to overlook. I also share your passion for visiting places where authors have left their mark and hotels with history and character. Egypt is on my bucketlist and given that Covid 19 has put a stop to travelling for now, your blog is very much a way for me to live vicariously as well as build up my research for a seamless trip.

Arrive in Cairo
Your Egyptian adventure begins with a five-hour international flight from London to Cairo. Upon arrival this evening, you’ll be whisked through customs and privately transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
From Cairo to Luxor
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in your hotel this morning, before stepping out to discover the city. You’ll have time to wander the historic sites of Cairo or delve into the ancient world at the impressive Egyptian Museum of Cairo. To get a taste of the city’s vibrant atmosphere, the Khan Al-Khalili Bazaar is the place to go. However you choose to spend your morning, after lunch, head back to the hotel before hopping in a private transfer back to Cairo airport for an hour-long domestic flight to Luxor. You’ll receive a warm welcome on arrival from our Concierge and be privately transferred to your hotel, where you'll be able to freshen up and enjoy dinner before hitting the hay.
ALL ABOARD THE STEAM SHIP SUDAN
After waking up in the ancient city of Luxor, you'll head to the Steam Ship Sudan (which incidentally is owned by our parent company, Voyageurs du Monde), where your idyllic adventure on the Nile begins. Get settled in your cabin before enjoying a delicious lunch on board, followed by an afternoon spent discovering the East Bank of Luxor. Visit the Karnak Complex, one of the world's largest sacred monuments, including the temple of the sovereign god of Karnak - Amun - which was built nearly two thousand years ago between the Middle Kingdom and the later Ptolemaic era. Then visit the Temple of Luxor, the most elegant of the Ancient Egyptian buildings built under Amenhotep III. Return to the boat and set sail towards Qena, north of Luxor. This part of the Nile, where few cruise ships go, is lush and picturesque and offers stunning coastal views over which you can enjoy your first Egyptian sunset along the Nile. Tuck into your first dinner aboard the steamship before spending your first night sleeping in true Egyptian luxury.
SAIL PAST ANCIENT CITIES
It’s an early start this morning as you disembark the boat and make the two-hour drive to Abydos. The holy city of Abydos is a city of Osiris, king of the underworld and God of the afterlife and has been drawing visitors since the Ancient Egyptian era. The temple, which dates back to the time of Seti I, is a wonder to admire, with large colourful engravings whose exquisite execution marks the birth of Ramesside art. On the way back to the steamship, stop off at the Dendera Temple and the spectacular Temple of Hathor, goddess of joy and love, protector of women and also nurse to the pharaohs. The remains of the ancient city of Dendera are particularly well preserved and you’ll be able to see intricately decorated chapels, columns topped with cow heads, and terraces and roofs boasting splendid views of the Upper Egypt countryside. Head back to the boat for lunch, before spending a beautiful afternoon sailing back towards Luxor.
VALLEY OF THE KINGS
Another early start this morning, but a truly worthwhile one as you head to the Theban Necropolis – a land of mysteries believed to be the domain of the god Osiris. You’ll be able to visit the Valley of the Kings, where you'll find hypogea (underground tombs) belonging to many pharaohs of the New Empire, as well as the Valley of the Queens where the royal wives are buried, and the Valley of the Nobles. You can also visit the Temple of Ramses III in Medinet-Habu, which is almost entirely preserved and is a perfect example of funeral temples from the Ramesside dynasty. Head back to the steamship for a languid lunch before setting sail for Esna Lock, before continuing onto Edfu under the star-filled sky. Enjoy another delicious dinner on board before heading to bed.
TEMPLES GALORE
This morning you’ll explore the Temple of Edfu, dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus, his wife Hathor and son Harsomtous and one of the best preserved temples in Egypt. Return to the steamship for lunch on board and sail to Kom Ombo just in time for sunset. In the evening, visit the Temple of Kom Ombo, a very special place within Egypt thanks to its dedication to two deities: the god Horus, with the head of a falcon and the god Sobek, with the head of a crocodile. Enjoy dinner on board and an overnight at the quay in Kom Ombo.
GATEWAY TO NUBIA
Today is the day you will set sail for Aswan, the gateway to Nubia. Large sandy banks slowly replace the cultivated lands along the Nile as you enter the area where civilisation once ended. Since the third century, Elephantine Island has been a major trading centre as Nubia (meaning gold in Nubian) boasts rich land, providing Egypt not only with gold but also with soldiers, sought-after timber and precious ivory. In Aswan, you’ll be able to visit the Philae Temple complex, which is a sanctuary to Isis, the goddess of marriage, fertility and medicine who ruled over life, death and the underworld, and one of the most important places in Egypt and Nubia until 550 AD. Enjoy some time exploring Aswan before dinner and the optional ‘Light and Sound’ show in Philae.
Discover Kitchener's Island
Leave the beautiful Steam Ship Sudan behind after breakfast and transfer to your hotel in style on a traditional felucca with a stop at Kitchener’s Island. Named after the former British consul in Egypt, who transformed this desert islet into a lush botanical haven, the island offers stunning views over the western bank of the Nile and the desert beyond. This island and felucca excursion will last around two hours, so you’ll arrive at your hotel for the next couple of nights this afternoon. Located on the banks of the Nile, overlooking Elephantine Island, your historic hotel exudes style and luxury. Relax in the outdoor pool or indulge in afternoon tea, followed by dinner and maybe a cocktail or two.
Explore Aswan
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel while admiring views over the Nile. It’s the final full day of your holiday, so take the reins and explore the historical delights that Aswan has to offer. From sublime amphitheatres and bustling souqs to the Unfinished Obelisk and the Great Mosque, Aswan is brimming with history just waiting to be discovered. After a day soaking in the ancient world, return to your hotel to wine and dine in one of the restaurants. Enjoy the balmy evening as you watch the final Egyptian sunset of your trip and sip a drink on the terrace.
Sadly, your Egyptian adventure comes to an end today. Make sure your bags are packed as it’s time for a private transfer to the airport for a domestic flight to Cairo before hopping aboard your international flight back to the UK.

Hello TAs, I understand that opinion on this may vary hugely, but I just wanted to canvas some of those opinions.
We've been quoted more than US$10K (twin sharing) for 14 days of travel in November 2024, not inclusive of the international flights into Jordan and out of Cairo (since we live in Asia, I expect those to be fairly expensive). This includes 5 days of cruising on the Sudan, various tours and relevant flights between Jordan & Egypt and within various cities. I've seen fairly reasonable group tours advertised for between $3-4K and even private ones coming up to $8K max. Is it worth paying this premium?
Can anyone who has done it comment, please? Of course, I appreciate luxury but have backpacked and stayed in BnBs and converted schools in various parts of the world. I'm over youth hostels but am assuming I could get fairly reasonable twin-sharing hotel accommodation and tours in those areas for less. Am I wrong? Look forward to hearing from you.

If it's your dream to sail on the Death on the Nile boat, it's worth it.
It's been a long time since my only Nile Cruise. I wouldn't repeat it on the same standard of the boat. But if I were going to do another cruise , it would be on the Sudan, or just possibly the Misr (A stern-wheel paddle steamer) but that doesn't have the panache of the Sudan
Depends how much you want to replicate’Death on the Nile’ on the Sudan.
We were on the SS Sudan in November 2019.
It was not cheap but I have no idea how much of the price was actually for the cruise it self.
I definitely enjoyed every minute of it.
Booking direct it's about $2900 twin share per person, so that is a good chunk of the price quoted.
What hotels are included? You could ask them to quote on 3* budget hotels, it may reduce it a bit. I have stayed in quite a few in Egypt and they were all fine, better than a hostel.
"where the cost of living isn't that high to start with..."
And then there are Airfares .
You can cut costs by eating outside in local restaurants, but they are not as cheap as Singapore's hawker street food establishments such as Lau Pa Sat or the Chinatown Complex
Even in local places, prices are leaping up - see this example of just one mezze menu item over a 5 year period https://www.flickr.com/photos/elaref/52312926070/in/album-72157679971256421/
Abydos and Dendera where part of out visits when we where on the SS Sudan.
We were moared near Dendera.
My CTC once explored travelling on SS Sudan.
She says it is owned by a French Company Voyageurs du Monde, which seems to be affiliated with Original Travel UK.
It is my experience over the years that she is generally right particularly when our views differ.
You can compare quotes from VdM with OT to see if there is a significant mark up by OT.

15 High-Risk Travel Destinations for 2024
Posted: May 29, 2024 | Last updated: May 29, 2024
The world is a tapestry of diverse landscapes and cultures, but amidst its beauty and wonder, there exist places that are fraught with danger. These perilous locales, known as the most dangerous places on Earth, offer a stark contrast to the serene and inviting destinations that most travelers seek. From war-torn regions where conflict and political unrest are a constant threat, to natural landscapes that are as deadly as they are breathtaking, these areas challenge the very limits of human survival. They encompass treacherous terrains like active volcanoes and deep, uncharted jungles, as well as areas with extreme climates, from the scorching heat of vast deserts to the frigid expanses of polar ice fields. The danger in these places is not only to the physical well-being of those who dare to venture there but also poses a threat to mental fortitude, challenging the resolve and resilience of even the most seasoned adventurers.
In this Middle Eastern nation, the U.S. State Department’s warning is unequivocal: Yemen is engulfed in pervasive violence, rendering no area within its borders safe. The persistent and calculated activities of terrorist groups pose a relentless threat, with bombings and armed conflicts frequently targeting tourist sites, public transportation, shopping centers, and other public venues. This volatile situation has persisted for several years, a fact underscored by the closure of the U.S. Embassy in February 2015. As a result of this withdrawal, American nationals in Yemen find themselves without the safeguard of their country’s diplomatic presence on the ground.
Many travelers fantasize about visiting the vibrant castles of St. Petersburg, yet the U.S. State Department suggests a cautious approach when considering travel to Russia. Although not every region in Russia is fraught with danger, the potential for terrorist attacks and the risk of American citizens facing harassment or extortion by police officers have led to a Level 3 advisory – urging travelers to rethink their plans. For those who decide to visit, heightened safety measures are recommended. It’s advised to avoid demonstrations, stay informed with local news updates, and exercise increased vigilance in areas frequently visited by Western tourists, to navigate the complexities of safety in Russia.
This Central American nation, nestled just below Mexico, currently carries a Level 3 travel advisory from the U.S. State Department. A mix of political unrest, widespread poverty, rampant drug trafficking, and a high risk of crimes such as carjacking and armed robbery contribute to its precarious safety situation. Furthermore, violent crimes, including sexual assault and murder, are alarmingly common, a situation exacerbated by the presence of numerous gangs in urban areas and along border regions. For those who choose to travel there, it is crucial to prioritize safety: staying in hotels with both door attendants and professional security staff is recommended. When exploring, it is advised to be accompanied by a security member from the Guatemalan Tourism Institute. Additionally, it is wise to avoid nighttime travel, using public ATMs, and displaying signs of wealth like wearing watches or jewelry, to mitigate risks in this challenging environment.
Philippines
While much of the Philippines offers a safe experience for travelers, caution is particularly advised in its southern regions, especially the beach areas, as highlighted by Gobbels. The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for these parts due to an uptick in kidnappings. Specifically, on the large island of Mindanao, in areas like Zamboanga and the Sulu Archipelago, there’s a risk of encountering the ASG (Abu Sayyaf Group), an ISIS-affiliated terrorist organization notorious for its kidnap-for-ransom activities. In Manila, the capital city, there is an increasing trend in pickpocketing and some violent crimes. Gobbels advises that walking might be safer than driving in these regions due to the high rate of accidents and limited emergency response services.
Cairo holds the unsettling distinction of being the most dangerous city for women globally. Despite a gradual easing of political tensions, the city remains fraught with challenges for both local and visiting women, primarily due to prevalent violence and deeply entrenched cultural norms. The efforts of numerous women’s rights organizations to enhance street safety are ongoing, but meaningful change is progressing slowly. For those determined to travel to Cairo, it is strongly recommended to engage with a reputable and trusted tour operator to navigate the city’s complex social landscape with greater security and awareness.
Madagascar, when compared to other African nations, boasts a relatively lower crime rate. However, the country is not without its challenges. Political instability in the region has led to increased unemployment, which in turn has sparked a rise in robberies and muggings. These incidents are particularly prevalent in densely populated areas such as airports and street markets. Additionally, there is a concerning trend of violent highway robberies, including car thefts, targeting travelers on major roads like RN7, RN27, RN10, and RN1B. Visitors to Madagascar should be especially cautious in these areas and remain vigilant to ensure their safety.
Malaysian Borneo
Situated in the Malay Archipelago of Southeast Asia, this island is a haven for nature enthusiasts, boasting unspoiled beaches, lush rainforests, and a diverse array of wildlife, including leopards and orangutans. While the natural scenery is captivating, the political situation presents significant risks. During the election period in early May, there were heightened concerns regarding the kidnapping of foreigners. Additionally, areas of the island renowned for their diving experiences are identified as particularly perilous due to the current political unrest.
In a ranking by worldatlas.com of the 50 most dangerous cities globally, Brazil notably had 17 cities on the list, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and safety awareness for travelers. Beyond issues of personal security, health risks are also a significant concern, particularly regarding water pollution. This is true even for renowned beach destinations like Ipanema. A study revealed that exposure to just three teaspoons of beach water in these areas could potentially lead to viral or bacterial infections, highlighting the critical importance of caution in both urban and natural environments in Brazil.
The recent relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem has intensified the already volatile atmosphere in the region, marking it as a potentially hazardous destination. Despite the celebratory nature of the embassy’s opening ceremony, significant violent protests broke out in Gaza, located just 50 miles away. This area, revered as one of the world’s holiest, continues to attract numerous visitors. However, in light of the current situation, the State Department advises travelers to remain highly vigilant and well-prepared for any eventualities when visiting this region.
This once-idyllic beach resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast has seen a drastic transformation from its former status as a white-sand party haven. It now falls under a Level 4 travel advisory, placing it in the same risk category as countries like Iran, Syria, and North Korea. The primary reason for this alarming classification is its reputation as the murder capital of Mexico, plagued by an extensive network of gangs that operate blatantly in the area.
The Big Island of Hawaii, commonly known as a romantic haven for honeymooners, has recently emerged as a potentially perilous destination. This shift in perception is largely due to the eruption of the Kilauea volcano, which has led to a declared state of emergency. Visitors to the island now face risks including toxic gas emissions, emerging fissures, unpredictable lava flows, and frequent earthquakes. While attractive airline deals to the island may become more prevalent, travelers should carefully consider these significant natural hazards before planning their journey to this otherwise enchanting destination.
The striking contrast in wealth and social class in India contributes to the risks of scams and theft. However, it’s the country’s medical safety concerns that heighten its danger level. The U.S. State Department currently assigns India a Level 2 travel advisory, which urges travelers to “exercise increased caution.” This advisory is primarily due to significant health risks, including severe air pollution, and the prevalence of diseases like typhoid, as well as various food and waterborne infections. Additionally, India has reported cases of the Nipah virus, a rare but serious infection. For those who have their hearts set on visiting iconic sites like the Taj Mahal, it’s crucial to be well-informed and prepared to navigate these health and safety challenges.
Caracas, Venezuela
has garnered notoriety for its exceptionally high crime rates, particularly in the realms of kidnapping and armed robbery. The city’s dire economic situation, coupled with political instability, has fostered an environment where such criminal activities are rampant. Visitors and locals alike face a constant threat in this urban landscape, where the risk of falling victim to these crimes is significantly elevated.
San Pedro Sula, Honduras
San Pedro Sula, Honduras, has been infamously referred to as the ‘murder capital of the world’, primarily due to its alarmingly high homicide rates. This grim title reflects the city’s intense struggles with gang violence and drug trafficking, which are major contributors to the pervasive sense of insecurity and danger. The city’s challenging socio-economic conditions further exacerbate the situation, making it a particularly hazardous environment for both residents and visitors.
Mogadishu, Somalia
The nature of violence in Mogadishu includes attacks by Al-Shabaab targeting government and security officials, foreign forces, and civilians. These attacks often take place in busy locations such as hotels, restaurants, and teashops, resulting in numerous civilian casualties.
Libya remains a highly dangerous destination due to ongoing conflict and political instability. Recent clashes in Tripoli, the capital, have underscored the precarious security situation, with deadly encounters between major armed groups resulting in significant casualties, including civilians. This instability is undermining the country’s preparations for elections, which are crucial for establishing a unified government and military, and essential for lasting stability. The lack of unified political leadership and the presence of various armed groups, including the Libyan National Army and militias with differing allegiances, further complicate the security landscape.
South Sudan
South Sudan is considered a dangerous place to visit due to a combination of factors, including ongoing violence, political instability, and severe humanitarian crises. The country has been experiencing chronic intercommunal clashes and violence between armed groups, particularly in the Upper Nile, southern Central Equatoria, and southern Unity states. These conflicts have led to significant displacement of people and serious human rights abuses, some of which may amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity.
