The Original Arabian Sport – Falconry

' src=

By Mohammed Mirza

The Original Arabian Sport – Falconry

Middle Easterners have been entertaining themselves with the sport of falconry for centuries. Some sources suggest that the sport of falconry started over 4,000 years ago.

Of late, the sport of our ancestors has been gaining ground, yet it still hasn’t become widespread amongst the masses. So it’s about time, we educate ourselves about this sport that continues to intrigue people from far and wide.

Although falconry is widely associated with Arabia today, it is believed to have originated in China. It features in many historic Chinese paintings and literature as well.

When it spread to Arabia, it wasn’t considered a sport, rather a means of obtaining food as falcons are expert predators. Falcons can spot prey at distances of several kilometers and some species of falcons can fly at over 100 km per hour and near 200 km per hour speeds on dives.

Over time, the falcon has integrated with the cultural heritage of the region. It is not only bedouins that engage in the sport today, many youngsters have developed an interest in the sport.

A Rite Of Passage

Falconry enthusiasts in The Kingdom regularly head to popular falcon spotting areas during the migration season that starts in October. However, the number of falcons migrating on these migration paths has been declining over the past few years due to poaching.

These falconers use their falcons to hunt, compete with other falcons and at times when they capture other injured falcons they even make the effort to heal them. Popular falcon breeds in The Kingdom include the Barbary, Sooty, Saker, Peregrine, Laner and Gyr.

During non-migrating seasons, falconers meet up to train their falcons. On sight of prey, the falconers remove the hood from the falcon’s head and let it fly. The falcons start a chase that can last for days. Radio transmitters are attached to the falcons so their respective owners can track them down after they have flown miles to catch their prey. In Saudi Arabia, the popular preys of choice include rabbits and desert quail.

DSC_8069

At night, during camping, all falcons are lined up sitting on a perch next to their owners. They are kept hooded throughout the night with some clasping onto the arms of their owners. Most falcon owners have bought these falcons or have been gifted them by other fellow falcon owners. Some falcons can even fetch up to hundreds of thousands in auctions.

GOPR0506

Falconry is not an easy sport in any sense of the word; it demands time, patience and training. Training a falcon can take up to 10 days and a falconer has to carry the falcon on his arm for hours.

For those more interested in this sport, they can get in touch with Explorer & Expat’s Tours, who organize visits to popular falcon spotting grounds and can even arrange an informative session on falconry, bringing with them trained falcons to introduce the concept to children at their schools.

Saudi Falcons Club

Falconry is a legacy inherited and passed on by the arab generations.

Falcons have been associated with men in the Arabian Peninsula for thousands of years. Falconry is a legacy inherited and passed on by the Arab generations. Arab falconers were leading internationally, in fact, Arab falconers’ superiority in the training of falcons is universally recognized. Since falconry is a living heritage in Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom has agreed to international conventions on the protection of falcons from extinction and the protection of migratory birds.

Today, there are more than 20,000 falconers in the Kingdom. To support the pioneering role of the Arab falconers and the Kingdom’s interest in this rich heritage, a royal decree was stipulated to establish the Saudi Falcons Club in the Kingdom on 26/10/1438 Hijri, corresponding to 20/7/2017, to create an association of falconers.

The club aims to preserve the historical heritage and traditions associated with falconry culture. Moreover, the club seeks to promote awareness, training, research, and action programs to protect falcons and the flourishing sport of falconry to remain a legacy in the Kingdom’s successive generations.

World's largest falconry exhibition opens in Riyadh

Event aims to preserve saudi heritage and raise awareness of different breeds, inside look at saudi international falcon and hunting exhibition.

Inside look at Saudi International Falcon and Hunting Exhibition

Saudi Arabia's International Falcon and Hunting Exhibition has opened to visitors.

The event, which began on Saturday at the Saudi Falcon Club north of Riyadh, will run until October 10. It aims to preserve Saudi culture and heritage while raising awareness of different breeds, hunting, and sports that can be passed on to future generations.

The club was established in 2017 by a royal decree to support Arab falconers and help to preserve the heritage and traditions of falconry.

Hunting with falcons, the fastest birds on the planet, has been an integral part of Bedouin history on the Arabian Peninsula for more than 10,000 years, although hunting has been banned in Saudi Arabia since 1975.

The club's ' Wild Allies ' documentary takes a behind-the-scenes look at the passion and dedication of those who raise birds to compete in one of the world’s biggest falconry festivals. The film, which premiered on National Geographic, will be available to stream until October.

Hussam Al Huzaimi, chief executive of the Saudi Falcon Club, said the documentary aims to raise awareness of the ancient art of falconry, which is integral to Saudi heritage.

“I believe this fascinating documentary highlights that the races are more than just supporting entertainment; they are a crucial part of a bigger plan to create a greener and more sustainable Saudi Arabia. And being part of all that has been incredible,” he told The National.

Twenty-nine artists and craftsmen from 10 countries are exhibiting at the exhibition, the largest in the world. It offers activities for visitors including shooting ranges and a digital museum.

Falconry is recorded by historians as one of the oldest human activities.

What people love about Saudi Arabia Tours

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Considering this was a budget tour, the hotels, clean, comfortable rooms and bathrooms with good breakfasts. As we were only a group of 4 we travelled by car with a guide/driver. Salman in Riyadh was exceptional. What I appreciated most was the availability of Neis via WhatsApp or email. We had the odd hiccup which could be easily resolved. Great customer service. If opting for the Bahrain extension and traveling across the border by road, its very easy to obtain the visa at the border and you can even pay with Saudi currency – which is widely accepted in Bahrain. Tours in Bahrain are limited or quite costly, but we found it easy to get around to the places we wanted to see with Uber – efficient and reasonable prices. As I didn’t have global roaming I purchased an Esim in both of the countries – also simple and cheap.
Very uncomfortable small bus did not have enough room for our 9 guests, 3 translators, guide and driver, even on excursions where we only brought day-bags (rather than entire luggage); uncomfortable seats and NOT ENOUGH LEG ROOM for taller non-local Westerners, worthless torn cloth blinds on the windows that could not be securely open or closed. Each of our 3 translators (who also served as guides for the tour overall) was GREAT! Consistently helpful, capable and personable; very positive attitudes and considerate individuals: 5+ stars for them! Local guides were also consistently great, although there was an ugly scene between our Jeddah(?) guide and our driver, leading to a verbal argument and the guide stomping off the bus.
This trip was great. Al Ula is definitely the highlight. It will be great to go back when Jeddah's old town is restored to full glory. All guides/drivers made an excellent job. Highly recommended!

falcon tours saudi arabia

In the heart of the Arabian Peninsula lies Saudi Arabia, a land steeped in history, culture, and natural wonders. Soaring high above this majestic landscape is the Saker Falcon, the national bird of Saudi Arabia.

This bird of prey stands not just as a symbol of the country’s rich natural heritage but also embodies the qualities of courage, strength, and nobility deeply rooted in Saudi culture.

Join us as we unveil the captivating world of the Saker Falcon, a bird revered not only for its breathtaking flight and hunting skills but also for its unique role in the cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia.

Quick Info About The Saker Falcon

Meet the saker falcon, national bird of saudi arabia.

The Saker Falcon, known for its imposing presence and hunting prowess, is an integral part of the Saudi Arabian natural and cultural landscape.

The Saker Falcon has a robust build with variable plumage. Typically, it exhibits a brown upper body with streaked underparts. The falcon’s head is relatively large, with dark eyes and a powerful beak.

As with many birds of prey, female Saker Falcons are larger than their male counterparts, a characteristic known as reverse sexual dimorphism.

One of the Saker Falcon’s most notable traits is its incredible speed in level flight, reaching up to 150 km/h (93 mph), and its ability to execute high-speed dives or “stoops.”

In the ecosystem, the Saker Falcon is a top predator. It primarily feeds on rodents and birds, playing a crucial role in controlling these populations. Predators of the Saker Falcon are limited, mainly due to its position at the top of the food chain. However, its eggs and chicks may be threatened by other large birds or mammals when left unattended.

The Saker Falcon’s role extends beyond the ecological; it is deeply intertwined with Saudi Arabian culture, especially in the traditional sport of falconry. This practice, symbolizing a harmonious relationship between humans and nature, highlights the cultural importance of the Saker Falcon in Saudi Arabia.

Where Does The Saker Falcon Live?

The Saker Falcon is a versatile bird, capable of thriving in a variety of habitats. Its natural range spans from Central Europe across the Palearctic to Manchuria. In Saudi Arabia, these falcons are well-adapted to the country’s desert and semi-desert environments, making use of the open landscapes that mirror their preferred habitats of open grasslands and steppes.

While some Saker Falcons are resident birds, others are partial migrants. In Europe and West Asia, juveniles often migrate, while adults tend to be more resident.

The migratory populations of Saker Falcons from these regions typically spend the winter in the Sahel region of Africa. On their migratory paths, they cross the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula, including Saudi Arabia, where they are revered and protected.

Why and When Did The Saker Falcon Become The National Bird of Saudi Arabia?

The Saker Falcon’s designation as the national bird of Saudi Arabia is deeply rooted in the nation’s culture and history. Revered for its strength, speed, and hunting prowess, the Saker Falcon symbolizes the values of courage, nobility, and freedom – qualities highly esteemed in Saudi Arabian society. The bird’s keen eyesight and remarkable hunting ability are seen as metaphors for vision and perseverance.

Falconry, involving the Saker Falcon, has been an integral part of Arabian heritage for thousands of years. This traditional sport reflects the deep connection between the people and the natural world, emphasizing respect for the environment and the skills of hunting.

The exact date when the Saker Falcon was officially recognized as the national bird is not clear, but its significance in the cultural and natural heritage of Saudi Arabia has long been acknowledged.

There have been no significant controversies or debates regarding its status as a national symbol. Instead, the Saker Falcon is celebrated and honored for its cultural and historical importance in Saudi Arabia.

In different cultures, the Saker Falcon may have various local and folk names that reflect its significance in those regions. These names often embody the bird’s characteristics of strength, speed, and hunting prowess. However, “Saker Falcon” remains the most universally recognized name for this species.

In some regions, like Hungary, the Saker Falcon population is relatively abundant and well-protected, showcasing successful conservation models. There are also captive breeding projects in the United States, Canada, and Europe, aimed at increasing the population of these falcons and reintroducing them into the wild.
