Everything you need to know about cruise ship laundry services

Kristy Tolley

Editor's Note

Whether you want to pack light for a longer cruise or you're traveling with little ones who tend to be a bit messy, you might need to wash clothes during your cruise vacation.

Some cruise lines offer self-service launderette facilities for guests to do their own laundry. They often include two or three washers and dryers, as well as vending machines with detergent and fabric softener for purchase.

When it comes to for-fee, valet-type laundry services, your cabin steward will usually handle it, and prices vary by line. Cruise lines often provide a price chart; look for the list and bag hanging in your cabin's closet or in one of the vanity drawers.

Additionally, some cruise lines like Windstar , Paul Gauguin Cruises and Royal Caribbean International offer various laundry packages for the length of your cruise.

Luxury cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Oceania Cruises provide either free self-service laundry facilities or complimentary valet laundry services. Laundry on a Cruise: Everything You Need to Know

Laundry on a Cruise: Everything You Need to Know

Taking care of laundry on a cruise ship doesn’t need to be a hassle! Most cruise ships offer several options to clean your clothes while you cruise.

Doing laundry on a cruise likely isn’t the first thing you think about when you’re planning a dream vacation at sea. But unless you’re taking your entire wardrobe along with you, you’ll probably find yourself wanting to wash and re-wear at least a few key items before the end of your sailing.

Access to laundry is so important if you’re trying to pack light for your cruise !

Thankfully, most ships have several ways to clean your clothes on a cruise—handy retractable clotheslines for drip-drying delicates, self-serve laundry rooms with washers and dryers, wash-and-fold service, even dry cleaning.

Here’s everything you need to know about doing laundry on a cruise .

Self-service laundry on cruise ships

Many mainstream, premium, and even luxury cruise lines offer self-service laundry rooms on most, if not all, of their ships.

Located within easy access of guest rooms (yes, you won’t need to lug a basket of unmentionables clear across the Lido Deck), many ships offer washing machines, dryers, clothes irons, folding tables, and even rinsing sinks.

carnival cruise washing clothes

Although some cruise lines (like Norwegian) have removed DIY laundry rooms from older ships and no longer include them in their new ships, many still offer this budget-friendly amenity.

Princess and Disney have laundry rooms on all vessels, and Carnival offers them for guests on all but their newest ships.

Surprisingly, ultra-premium and luxury cruise lines almost always have laundry rooms for guests! Azamara, Cunard, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, and Silversea all offer this option.

How much is self-serve laundry on a cruise?

On most mainstream and premium cruise lines that offer self-service laundry rooms, there’s a small fee for each wash and dry cycle.

Prices can vary, but expect to pay between $2.50 and $4 (USD) for each wash and dry.

Laundry detergent, bleach, and fabric softener (dryer sheets or liquid) are usually an extra charge, and will be available in the launderette.

Luxury cruise lines usually offer free wash and dry cycles, and include free laundry detergent as well.

How do you pay for self-serve laundry on a cruise?

Historically, self-service laundry rooms on cruise ships were coin-operated, using quarters just like land-based laundromats.

But today, you can pay for most ships’ laundry facilities using your cruise card (or RFID-enabled medallion if your ship has that technology) to charge your onboard account.

Some older cruise ships still have coin-operated machines. If you don’t have enough quarters (or equivalent coins if your ship’s currency isn’t USD), just visit Guest Services for change.

Cruise pro tip: Consider packing a small ziploc bag of powdered detergent and some fabric softener sheets in your luggage. You’ll save money compared to buying overpriced detergent on the ship, and you can choose your favorite brand and scent.

When is the best time to do laundry on a cruise?

Some cruise lines offer 24/7 laundry rooms , and others have specific open hours, often closing when the ship is in port. Check your daily planner for times.

If you’d rather not have to wait for washers, dryers, or irons, cruise ship laundry rooms are busiest on sea days. A sea day afternoon before formal night is prime time in the launderette!

To avoid crowds, plan to do your laundry in the early morning or after dinner.

Wash-and-fold service on cruise ships

If your cruise ship doesn’t offer self-service laundry rooms (or if you’d rather pay someone else to do the task), the wash-and-fold service is a good alternative.

carnival cruise washing clothes

But it can be expensive! The cost per item will be listed on a price list in your stateroom closet, along with a bag to send your laundry out.

Prices vary by cruise line, but expect to pay about $2-3 for underwear, socks, or swimsuits, $3-4 for a t-shirt or top, $5-6 for jeans or shorts, and $8-10 for dresses.

Cruise pro tip: Watch for the daily planner that’s delivered to your stateroom each evening. It will sometimes include a flyer for discounted wash-and-fold service by the bag!

How quickly will my laundry be returned on a cruise?

As a general rule, you’ll get your clean laundry back in your stateroom within 48 hours. Some cruise lines promise a 24-hour turnaround, as long as your laundry bag is picked up by the morning’s cutoff.

Need your laundry back ASAP? Many cruise lines offer same-day express service for an additional fee.

How to get free wash-and-fold laundry service on a cruise

Many cruise lines offer free wash-and-fold laundry to guests who have reached an elite level in their loyalty program.

On Carnival cruises, guests who reach Platinum status are eligible for up to five free bags of laundry, depending on the length of the sailing. Diamond members can take advantage of unlimited free laundry service!

Royal Caribbean doesn’t offer free bags of laundry until you hit the Diamond Plus tier, but they do give discounts for Platinum and above.

Check your cruise line’s loyalty benefits to see if you’re eligible for free or discounted laundry on your next cruise.

Will the cruise ship laundry service ruin my clothing?

If you’re very careful with your favorite clothes—you sort them by color and only wash in cool or warm water—I’d avoid the wash-and-fold service for most of your clothes, even if it’s free.

But here’s what I send out for wash-and-fold service on a cruise:

  • Boxer shorts / briefs
  • Women’s or girls’ plain underwear without any lace trim or embellishment
  • Plain cotton jersey camisoles / layering tanks
  • Cotton or acrylic socks
  • Oversized t-shirts
  • Oversized sweatshirts / hoodies
  • Oversized PJs or sweatpants

It’s a good idea to avoid sending delicate items or anything that could shrink. If you’d be devastated if the laundry team ruined (or lost) a piece of clothing, don’t send it out.

Dry cleaning on cruise ships

Especially if you’re sailing on a luxury or more traditional cruise line with formal nights, the question of how to take care of dry-cleaning on a cruise ship always comes up.

carnival cruise washing clothes

Do cruise ships offer onboard dry cleaning?

Many cruise lines offer dry cleaning , though most are moving towards more environmentally-friendly professional cleaning services.

You’ll sometimes see this called wet cleaning or wet/dry cleaning. I won’t pretend to be an expert on any of these processes, but they’re the only cleaning service offered on cruise ships for items like suits and formalwear.

I’d never send a super-delicate item to be dry-cleaned on a cruise ship. I’d probably also avoid sending beaded or sequined dresses or tops.

But a basic suit or dress for formal night? Especially if you’ve only packed one dressy outfit and it needs to be cleaned and pressed for the next elegant evening, this is the best option.

Cruise pro tip: I always pack some at-home dry cleaning packets if my ship has a launderette. With just 20 minutes in the dryer, our suits and dresses come out wrinkle-free and smelling fresh.

Ironing clothes on a cruise ship

Many new cruisers are shocked when they realize their stateroom doesn’t include an iron and ironing board, as many hotel rooms do.

Even savvy land travelers who come prepared with a mini travel iron or clothes steamer face a similar shock when security confiscates their tools on embarkation day .

Clothing irons (and even steamers) can be a major fire hazard on cruise ships, so the crew carefully controls how and where guests use irons.

If your cruise ship has a laundry room, there will be an iron and ironing board. Usually they’re very easy to spot, but sometimes they’re a bit hidden!

Cruise pro tip: You can’t take an iron on a cruise, but you can pack a hair straightener! Your styling tool can do double-duty as a touch-up iron to flatten shirt collars and smooth out wrinkly hems.

Once on a Carnival cruise, I spent an entire hour on a sea day trying to iron my dress for formal night. I visited every single laundry room on the ship looking for one with an ironing board.

Convinced that other guests had commandeered all of the ironing boards, I approached a room steward in the hallway and explained my situation. He led me to the nearest launderette and showed me the pull-down ironing board hidden behind a gray door that I had assumed was an electrical panel.

carnival cruise washing clothes

So if the ironing board isn’t in plain view, try exploring the laundry room more to see where it might be hiding.

What if you need an iron and your cruise ship doesn’t have self-serve laundry?

On many cruise lines and cruise ships without self-service laundry rooms (and on some that do!) you can order an iron and ironing board to be delivered to your room.

Just ask your stateroom attendant, or call housekeeping from your stateroom phone.

Hand-washing clothes on a cruise ship

I get it, no one wants to spend their precious cruising time hand-washing clothes in the sink. But there are a few instances where it just makes sense.

If you’re spending lots of time in the pool or hot tub or at the beach, you’ll probably want to rinse all of that chlorine (or saltwater) out of your swimsuits.

Or maybe you’re doing a lot of hiking in port, like I did on my Alaska expedition cruise . Instead of buying seven full sets of wool socks and base layers (that would get expensive), I just packed a couple of each and washed them in the stateroom sink at night.

If you’ve taken my tip to pack a small baggie of powdered detergent, just use a tiny bit of that in the sink. Or in a pinch, you could always use a squirt of body wash or shampoo—cruise lines almost always provide a basic version of these staples.

Then hang your clothes to dry right in your shower. Most cruise ship bathrooms include a retractable clothesline for drip-drying clothes. I recommend packing some clothespins or pool towel clips (gotta love those cruise accessories that serve more than one purpose!)

Cruise pro tip: If you have a balcony, resist the urge to hang your wet items outside. It’s pretty likely that a gust of wind will whip your clothes right out to sea.

How to corral all that dirty laundry on a cruise

In a tiny cruise stateroom (especially in a 150-sq.ft-ish inside cabin ), the dirty clothes situation can quickly get out of control if you don’t have a central location for it.

A pop-up laundry hamper takes up almost zero room in your suitcase, and is a great way to keep your cruise cabin looking tidy.

Cruise pro tip: Reminding your cabin-mates that your room steward will be in once or twice a day to vacuum and make the bed can be an excellent motivator for them to put dirty laundry in the hamper. These hard-working crew members can’t clean if there’s dirty laundry everywhere!

Re-wearing clothes on your cruise

Before I go on about dirty laundry on a cruise, I need to share something really important.

It’s OK to re-wear clothes on your cruise.

Really. No one cares.

Even if you’d never be caught dead re-wearing the same piece in a short time at home, it’s different on a cruise. We’re all living out of a suitcase!

I mean, unless you spill a strawberry daiquiri on your shirt, or you work up a major sweat on a shore excursion, your jeans, sundresses, or cardigans are probably totally fine for a re-wear. Just hang them up and air them out.

Worried about wrinkles or odor? A quick spritz with a travel-sized wrinkle release spray takes care of it all.

Packing clothes away that you won’t wear again during your cruise

Unless you’ve booked a super-long cruise, you’ll probably have some clothes you’ll only wear once and then take back home to wash.

I’m talking underpants, socks, camis—maybe even t-shirts and other tops on a shorter sailing.

I like to hang up a “pack it back in the suitcase” bag, either in the closet or on the back of the bathroom door. You can use a mesh laundry bag , or even re-purpose a large, sturdy plastic shopping bag with handles.

Once it’s full, it goes back inside one of the suitcases I’ve stashed under the bed, ready for my post-cruise laundry session at home. Yippee!

Which cruise lines have laundry options on board?

Almost every cruise line offers at least send-out laundry services on each ship. Many also offer self-service laundry rooms and/or dry cleaning.

See the chart below to find out what laundry options your cruise line offers:

FAQ about laundry on a cruise ship

Which cruise lines have self-service laundry facilities?

Many (but not all) cruise lines offer self-service laundry rooms for guests. Popular cruise lines with self-serve launderettes include Carnival, Disney, and Princess.

Do cruise ships offer dry cleaning services?

Many cruise lines offer dry cleaning or wet/dry cleaning on board for a fee per item.

Can you bring a clothes iron or steamer on a cruise?

Personal clothing irons and steamers can be a fire hazard on a cruise, so cruise lines will confiscate them at embarkation. But many ships offer pressing services and/or the use of an iron and ironing board.

Have you ever done your own laundry on a cruise ship? Or do you send it out to be washed or dry cleaned? I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments below!

Cruising with Carnival Cruise Line is a fantastic way to relax and enjoy a vacation at sea. With a variety of activities, entertainment options, and delicious dining choices, you'll have a blast aboard one of their ships. But what about laundry? If you're planning an extended voyage or simply prefer to pack lightly, you may be wondering if all Carnival Cruise ships have laundry rooms available for passengers to use. The answer is yes!

Carnival Cruise Line understands that guests may need to do laundry during their cruise. Therefore, they offer self-service laundry rooms on all of their ships. These laundry rooms are equipped with washers, dryers, and ironing boards, making it convenient for guests to take care of their laundry needs while onboard.

Using the laundry rooms on a Carnival Cruise ship is a simple process. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do your laundry while cruising:

  • Locate the laundry rooms: The self-service laundry rooms are typically located on multiple decks throughout the ship. You can find their exact locations on the ship's deck plans, which are provided to guests upon embarkation.
  • Gather your essentials: Before heading to the laundry room, gather your dirty clothes, detergent, fabric softener, and any other laundry supplies you may need. It's a good idea to bring your own detergent, as it may not be provided in the laundry room.
  • Load your laundry: Once you arrive at the laundry room, find an available washer and load it with your clothes. Follow the instructions on the machine to select the appropriate cycle and add detergent.
  • Pay and start the machine: Most Carnival Cruise ship laundry rooms operate on a pay-per-use system. You'll need to insert quarters or use your Sail & Sign card to pay for the washer. Once payment is made, start the machine and wait for the cycle to complete.
  • Transfer to the dryer: After your clothes have been washed, transfer them to an available dryer. Again, follow the instructions on the machine to select the desired drying time and start the process.
  • Retrieve your clothes: Once the drying cycle is complete, remove your clothes from the dryer and fold or hang them as needed. If you encounter any issues or need assistance, don't hesitate to ask a crew member for help.

While self-service laundry rooms are available on all Carnival Cruise ships, it's important to note that they may not be included in the standard cruise fare. Some ships may charge a fee for using the laundry facilities, and the cost can vary depending on the ship and itinerary. Therefore, it's a good idea to budget for laundry expenses if you plan on utilizing the onboard laundry rooms.

In addition to the self-service laundry rooms, Carnival Cruise Line also offers laundry and dry-cleaning services for an additional fee. If you prefer to have your laundry done for you, simply fill out the laundry form provided in your stateroom, and the crew will take care of it.

In conclusion, if you're planning a Carnival Cruise, rest assured that all of their ships have laundry rooms available for passengers to use. Whether you choose to do your own laundry or opt for the convenience of the onboard laundry services, you'll have all the necessary facilities to keep your clothes clean and fresh during your cruise. Bon voyage!

Creative Solutions for Concealing Washer Hoses in the Laundry Room

If you're planning to go on a Carnival Cruise, you might be wondering if there are laundry facilities onboard. After all, nobody wants to spend their entire vacation wearing dirty clothes! Luckily, Carnival Cruise ships are equipped with laundry rooms that have washing machines and dryers.

Having a laundry room on a cruise ship might sound like a luxury, but it's actually a practical necessity. With so many people onboard, there is bound to be a need for clean clothes. Plus, the dry sea air can make clothes feel damp and musty, so having access to a washing machine and dryer is a welcome convenience.

In most cases, the laundry rooms on Carnival Cruise ships are located on various decks throughout the ship. They are usually open 24 hours a day, allowing you to do your laundry whenever it's convenient for you. However, it's important to note that there may be a charge for using the washing machines and dryers.

Using the laundry facilities on a Carnival Cruise ship is a simple and straightforward process. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the laundry room:

  • Gather your dirty clothes and any laundry detergent or fabric softener you might need. It's a good idea to bring your own, as there may be limited supplies available in the laundry room.
  • Locate the nearest laundry room on your deck. Most ships have signs or maps to help you find your way.
  • Once you're inside the laundry room, find an available washing machine or dryer. If all the machines are in use, you may need to wait or try another laundry room on a different deck.
  • Load your clothes into the washing machine and add the appropriate amount of detergent. Follow the instructions on the detergent packaging for best results.
  • Select a wash cycle and start the machine. Each machine may have different settings, so make sure to read the instructions on the machine itself.
  • While your clothes are being washed, you can take this time to relax or explore other areas of the ship. Just make sure to set a reminder so you don't forget about your laundry!
  • Once the washing cycle is complete, transfer your clothes to a dryer. Again, make sure to follow any instructions on the machine for the best results.
  • Select a drying cycle and start the machine. Depending on the type of clothes and size of the load, it may take some time for your clothes to dry completely.
  • Once your clothes are dry, remove them from the dryer and fold or hang them as desired.
  • Return any unused detergent or supplies to their original location and leave the laundry room clean and tidy for the next person.

While using the laundry facilities on a Carnival Cruise ship is a convenient option, keep in mind that laundry rooms can get busy, especially during peak times. It's always a good idea to plan ahead and do your laundry when it's less crowded. Additionally, consider bringing travel-sized laundry detergent pods to avoid the hassle of carrying a full-sized bottle.

In conclusion, yes, the laundry rooms on a Carnival Cruise ship are equipped with washing machines and dryers. Utilizing these facilities can help ensure that you have clean clothes throughout your vacation. By following a simple step-by-step process, you can easily take care of your laundry while onboard. Just remember to check for any charges and plan accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.

Effective Ways to Eliminate Sewer Smell in Your Laundry Room

When going on a Carnival Cruise, one of the concerns for many passengers is how they will manage their laundry. Spending several days or weeks on a ship can lead to accumulating a significant amount of dirty clothes. However, Carnival Cruise ships have laundry facilities that are available for passengers to use. The question then arises, is there an additional cost to use these facilities?

The good news is that Carnival Cruise ships do have laundry rooms that are accessible to passengers. These laundry rooms are equipped with washers, dryers, and sometimes even ironing boards. So if you find yourself running out of clean clothes during your cruise, these laundry rooms can come in handy.

When it comes to the cost of using the laundry rooms on a Carnival Cruise ship, there is an additional charge. However, it is important to note that the cost is relatively affordable. During my recent Carnival Cruise experience, I found that it cost around $3 to wash a load of laundry and an additional $3 to dry it. This price includes the detergent and dryer sheets, which are conveniently provided in the laundry room.

To use the laundry facilities on a Carnival Cruise ship, you will need to use quarters or purchase tokens at the guest services desk. The machines only accept these forms of payment, so make sure you have enough on hand before heading to the laundry room. I recommend bringing a roll of quarters with you to avoid any inconvenience.

Using the laundry rooms on a Carnival Cruise ship is a straightforward process. First, find the nearest laundry room on your deck. Most ships have multiple laundry rooms scattered throughout different decks. Once in the laundry room, load your clothes into one of the washers, add the provided detergent, and insert the necessary amount of quarters or tokens. The machines have clear instructions, making it easy for anyone to operate them.

After washing, transfer your clothes to one of the dryers. Again, add the necessary amount of quarters or tokens, and turn on the dryer. It is important to keep track of time as the dryers operate on a timer. Avoid overloading the dryer to ensure that your clothes dry properly.

Once your laundry is done, gather your clean clothes and return to your cabin. If you need to iron any items, you will find ironing boards and irons conveniently available in the laundry room. These are typically free to use, so you don't have to worry about any additional charges for ironing.

In summary, while there is an additional cost to use the laundry rooms on a Carnival Cruise ship, it is relatively affordable. The convenience of having laundry facilities onboard can save you from running out of clean clothes during your cruise. Just remember to bring quarters or purchase tokens beforehand and follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the laundry room. Happy laundering!

How to Create Your Own Laundry Room Cabinets

When it comes to doing laundry on a Carnival Cruise ship, passengers have the option to either bring their own laundry detergent and supplies or use the ones provided by the ship. Cruises often provide laundry rooms onboard where passengers can wash and dry their clothes, allowing them to pack lighter and have clean clothes throughout their trip.

What supplies are provided in the laundry rooms?

Carnival Cruise ships generally provide laundry rooms that are equipped with washers, dryers, and ironing boards. These machines are available for passengers to use at a small fee. However, the laundry rooms do not typically provide laundry detergent and fabric softener for free. These items can be purchased from vending machines located inside the laundry rooms. The cost of detergent and fabric softener can vary between ships and may be subject to change.

Should passengers bring their own supplies?

While the option to purchase detergent and fabric softener onboard is convenient, some passengers may prefer to bring their own supplies. It can be more cost-effective to pack small travel-sized laundry detergent pods or packets in their luggage. This way, passengers have control over the brand and type of detergent they use, especially if they have sensitive skin or allergies.

How much detergent should passengers bring?

The amount of detergent passengers should bring depends on the length of their cruise and how often they plan to do laundry. For a shorter cruise, passengers may only need a few pods or packets of laundry detergent. However, for longer cruises, it may be more practical to pack a small travel-sized bottle or multiple pods to ensure they have enough for the duration of their trip. It's better to have a little extra than run out midway through the cruise.

Tips for doing laundry onboard a Carnival Cruise ship

Here are a few helpful tips for doing laundry on a Carnival Cruise ship:

  • Check the ship's website or reach out to guest services to confirm the availability and prices of the laundry facilities and supplies.
  • Plan your laundry schedule wisely. The laundry rooms can get busy during peak times, such as in the morning or before dinner. Try to do laundry when most passengers are out on excursions or enjoying onboard activities.
  • Be prepared with change and small bills for the vending machines, as they may not accept credit cards.
  • Consider bringing a small mesh laundry bag or a collapsible hamper to keep your dirty clothes organized in your stateroom.
  • Use the onboard laundry services if you prefer not to do your own laundry. This service typically comes with an additional fee, but it can be a convenient option for passengers who don't want to spend their vacation time doing chores.

In conclusion, Carnival Cruise ships provide laundry rooms with washers, dryers, and ironing boards for passengers to use. However, laundry detergent and fabric softener are typically not provided for free and must be purchased from vending machines. Passengers have the option to bring their own supplies or purchase them onboard. Planning ahead and being prepared with the necessary supplies will ensure a smooth and efficient laundry experience during the cruise.

$15 a bag full, correct? Can you give washing instructions like "cold water" and "low heat for dryer"? What is the turn around time like?

Thanks. Just trying to cut down on the amount of clothes we pack this time. :)

Fifteen dollars is correct. They use hot water and very hot dryers. That's the only way they do it, They don't sort colors either. Whatever you send, they put it in a mesh bag and toss the bag in with a whole bunch of other bags. They do have laundry facilities that you can wash your own clothes if you don't want to risk having anything ruined by the heat.

Anytime we have sent a bag out, the steward picked it up when they cleaned our cabin in the morning and it was back in the cabin when we came back from early seating dinner.

RWolver672 gave a perfect answer! Just be aware - there have been complaints of how things have been shrunk, or discolored when clothes have come back. We love the service, and put undies, socks, shorts, tanks, leggings in each cruise- items that I have already laundered a number of times at home, and won't have a heart attack over if damaged in the wash. We have never had an issue, and love the way the clothes come back compactly folded!

Also just a tip, there is laundry rooms on the ships. The bags they give you that cost $15 to do is fairly small. I used those bags to carry my laundry to the laundry room and wash myself. It cost me $6 to do 3 of those bags (washed and dried). It would of cost $45 had I let Carnival do it for me.

No by the bag price, as it says it varies by ship, but it shows everything else.

I know Vista offers $15 by-the-bag laundry service and it is same day. I didn't use it because I washed a load of clothes myself, but I thought their by-the-bag service sounded like a good deal.

Yes, there is a by the bag price. What you posted is pricing for individual cleaning. That costs quite a bit more. It's more for dress clothes or if you're real fussy about undergarments.

We have used the $15 bag on several cruises. The trick is to roll the clothes up as tight as you can get them. If you do it right, you can get enough clothes in one bag that after they come back all clean and folded, it takes two or three bags coming back.

We cruise with my parents, both Plat, sooo we pack SO much less meow. So, I give the send out bag laundry service a big #HitemwiththeHein

I meant it didn't have a price listed for the by the bag service, it just said the price varied by ship. If I remember correctly, on the Ecstasy last year, it was something like $30 for a bag of laundry, but we got a flyer for 50% off on the last Sea day.

Yep. This is why I never do the ship laundry, except to have things pressed, etc. I hate having to iron on vacation if needed. So I will pay the few $ to have things pressed. But all laundry goes into hot water and hot dryers with harsh cleansers if you use ship laundry. If you are washing cheaper items you don't mind putting through that kind of stress, no problem. I'm not trying to be flippant or some sort of jack bleep saying that. Its just that I like to hang on to my money and over the years, I've come to realize I can buy a $15 t-shirt from Lands End that will last 3 summers versus a $10 one from Target that barely lasts one. Same concept with khakis and polos and other garments. I won't even let other people shine my dress shoes. I about vomited when I paid $300 for 2 pairs of Johnston Murphy dress shoes 10 years back. And another $100 for the shoe trees and polishing kit. But I have all of it 10 years later. And the shoes look great. Just think of how much buying cheaper dress shoes every few years for 10 years would have cost comparison. Sorry for ranting. Just that I wouldn't trust the ship's laundry on anything you don't want wrecked. Others who have actually tried it may have different experiences.

It is my understanding that on Carnival, there are washers and dryers where you can do your own, correct? I would and may do that when we sail this August.

How To Manage Laundry on a Cruise Ship: Easy & Practical Tips

By: Author Elaine Warren

Posted on Last updated: March 7, 2024

Just about everyone wants to pack lighter for a cruise if they can. And, one simple strategy for streamlining your family’s cruise is to plan on getting some laundry done while you’re away. That way you can start off by packing far fewer clothes.

Laundry may be one of the last things that you want to think about when you are on vacation, but you can reap many benefits by thinking about it before you leave. And this can actually lead to a more relaxing and stress-free vacation.

Read below for tips on implementing this strategy in simple and cost-effective ways, in this  quick guide to managing laundry on a cruise ship.

  • Streamlined Packing : Plan laundry to pack less, reducing luggage for easier travel and increased cabin space.
  • Laundry Options on Board : Choose from self-service (on select ships), full-service, or hand-washing for your laundry needs.
  • Affordable Laundry Strategies : Save money with cruise line laundry specials, such as fill-a-bag deals and pre-sailing discounts.

Laundry On A Cruise: The Benefits of Having a Plan

Let’s start with why you should even care about your family’s laundry on a cruise ship. Between excursions, the pool, potential sweaty activities, changing for dinner, and the occasional formal night, you could easily change clothes two or three times a day. For a seven-day cruise with a family of four or five, that equals lots of clothes!

And, if you try to pack accordingly, you will likely end up with quite a bit of luggage . And this multiplies substantially with each child that you include in the mix.  You can easily rack up several pesky airline fees because of the weight of your bags, the number of your bags, or both.

Less luggage also means that you’ll have more cabin space available. Being able to tuck all of your luggage out of sight and out of the way will greatly increase the comfort level of your stateroom. (You can find out more strategies for making your cabin more comfortable in  9 Remarkably Easy Tips To Make Family Cruise Ship Rooms Cozy .)

Also, the less luggage that you bring onto the ship means less luggage that you have to haul back off of the ship. This can make your disembarkation process easier .

(This Post may include affiliate links. Please see our Disclosure Page for detailed information.)

You can substantially reduce your amount of family luggage when you reduce the overall amount of clothes that you pack. And, you can easily do that if you know what you want to do about laundry before you start packing. So make a plan for managing your laundry on a cruise.

Hand-Washing: The Cheapest Option for Laundry on a Cruise Ship.

Hand-washing Clothes On A Cruise - photo of bras hanging on towel rack

Hand-washing clothes on your cruise is always a viable and cheap option. Particularly when you are cruising a tropical itinerary that doesn’t require much clothing. Underwear can easily be washed in a bathroom. As can any other small, thin, or lightweight clothes that can dry quickly such as t-shirts, tank tops, and some shorts.

For this option, pack some single-use laundry detergent to wash small items in the sink.  After you wash your items, remove the excess moisture by rolling the wet clothes in a bath towel. (You can get extra towels from your stateroom attendant.) Then hang the clothes to dry overnight.

These days, it’s also possible to pack along your own portable travel “washing machine” for more thorough in-room cleaning. While many folks would consider the original versions of this device a tad bulky for typical cruise travel, the company now has a “mini” version that fits in the palm of your hand. And, even the larger pocket-size version is less than 6 oz!

As for drying your clothes, many ships have a clothesline in the bathroom which is perfect for doing laundry on a cruise ship. However, many of the newer ships do not. (For instance, we were unable to find a line in our cabin on Harmony of the Seas .)

So, if you are planning to hand-wash some clothes you should check on your ship specifically. Or, alternatively, you can pack a travel clothesline .

Please note that you will not be permitted to have an iron or steamer in your cabin . These items will be confiscated if found. But, the ship will offer a pressing service for a fee.

Alternatively, you can try steaming wrinkles out when someone is taking a hot shower. Or, you can pack some type of wrinkle-away spray .

Use A Self-Service Laundry Center (if available)

Some cruise ships offer self-service laundry facilities that resemble what you see at a typical public laundromat (except smaller). You’ll find washers, dryers, and sometimes, ironing boards.

Some, but not all, cruise lines also offer self-serve laundry rooms that are relatively inexpensive, and in some instances, may be complementary. However, the following cruise lines do not offer any self-serve laundry facilities: Celebrity, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean.

The following lines offer complimentary self-serve laundry: Azamara Club, Crystal, Cunard, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, and Seabourn .

photo of kneeling woman doing laundry on a cruise ship

Of the major large family-friendly cruise lines, only three offer self-serve laundry facilities on some of their ships: Carnival, Disney, and Princess . All of these require some form of payment.

  • Carnival charges $3.50 per load. (These Carnival ships do not have washers and dryer s: Celebration, Jubilee, Mardi Gras, Firenze, Luminosa, and Venezia.)
  • Disney’s machines cost $3.00 per load. (Note that the capacity of the Disney laundry machines run small, so you will likely run more loads than at home.)
  • Princess  laundry centers require $3.00 per load. (The laundry rooms on many ships are closed after 10:00 p.m.)

For each of these cruise lines, you will be able to purchase laundry detergent and other supplies on board. But it would be far less expensive to bring your own. And, you can get the kind where one laundry sheet can conveniently be used for both the washer and the dryer.

Although passengers cannot have an iron or steamer in their cabins, ships that offer self-service laundry centers will usually have an iron and ironing board also available in the same area for guest use. Interestingly, three of the Carnival ships that do not have washers and dryers, do have dedicated rooms for ironing — Celebration, Jubilee and Mardi Gras.

The Full-Service Option for Laundry On A Cruise

Not surprisingly, all cruise lines offer an onboard laundry service in addition to traditional dry cleaning. These are often referred to as “valet” services. And there are usually different tiers of service:

  • Dry cleaning services : Ideal for delicate or formal wear.
  • Pressing services : To keep your garments wrinkle-free.
  • Wash and press service : Combines a standard wash with professional pressing, perfect for dress shirts and slacks.

Unfortunately, these services can be costly. Typically, doing laundry on a cruise ship through the ship’s laundry service will incur per-item charges of several dollars. (Compared to several dollars per load in a self-service center, or $0 additional dollars in your stateroom).  On a per-item basis, charges can rack up rather quickly. Some cruise lines also offer express services for a quicker turnaround.

carnival cruise washing clothes

For instance, on Royal Caribbean, the wash and press prices for most items range from $3.49 to $5.49 per item, with some items as high as $8.99. On Celebrity , typical prices for laundry services range from $3.75 to $8.00 per item. And, on Carnival , most items washed through the valet laundry service cost between $2.00 and $7.00 each.

Laundry on a Cruise Ship: Money Saving Tips for Cruise Laundry

So, how can you bring these costs down? You should be on the lookout for laundry specials both before you board the ship, and while you are sailing. These types of promotions will make doing laundry on a cruise ship more affordable.

On-Board Promotions

Many cruise lines will routinely offer laundry specials or discount packages, but you should make a point of actually looking for them. Oftentimes, these specials will be announced and made available once you are onboard the ships. Look in your daily cruise planner, or ask early on in your cruise at guest services.

carnival cruise washing clothes

These promotions typically involve some variation of filling up a laundry bag (provided by the cruise line) on a certain day and submitting it for a reduced fee. These promotions usually do not include pressing.

So, for instance, Royal Caribbean often runs wash and fold specials during their cruise itineraries. Basically, for a flat fee of around $35, you can stuff as much laundry as possible in a designated paper bag,  and it will be returned washed, and folded in a couple of days.

Both Carnival and Celebrity will often offer similar fill-a-bag promotions.

On a recent sailing of Celebrity Edge , the ship offered a bag promotion for $49.99. You could stuff as many items in the bag as you wanted as long as it did not rip.

Carnival offers more economical per bag pricing options where you can fill a standard laundry bag for a fixed amount . The charges are typically:

  • 1 standard laundry bag : $15.00 USD for same day service
  • 5 standard laundry bag deal : $50.00 USD for same day service

Pre-Sailing Discounts and Other Potential Discounts

Some cruise lines may also offer discounted packages that can be purchased in advance of sailing. So look for any such options when you are doing your online registration.

Laundry on a Cruise Ship | photo of laundry voucher from Celebrity Cruise in 2023.

On recent Celebrity Cruises sailings, passengers had the option to purchase vouchers for discounted laundry prior to sailing.

Holland America seems to offer the best deal. You can pay $20 per bag for laundry. Or, you can buy an unlimited laundry package that costs $7 per day per stateroom (so 7 days = $49). Holland America also reportedly uses cloth rather than paper laundry bags which allows you to squeeze more clothes into one bag.

MSC Cruises also offers laundry packages but the precise features vary by sailing. On a recent cruise on MSC Seaside , they were offering to wash and fold a set number of pieces for a flat fee – for instance, 30 pieces for $50. A meaningful discount from the regular per item charges.

Related Post: Our Top 10 Reasons MSC Seaside Rocks Family Cruising

Finally, you should also check on whether your cruise reservation has some laundry discounts or benefits built right in. So, for instance, if your reservation includes some onboard credit, you could plan to allocate that perk for defraying laundry costs.

If you are booked in a suite or similar higher revenue stateroom, your booking may also include some complementary or discounted laundry services. Likewise, if you are traveling with someone who has loyalty status benefits, they may have access to potential discounts as well.

Practical Tips and Considerations

Regardless of which laundry option you plan to use, or even if you plan to just bring back all of your dirty clothes and do the laundry at home, you should consider taking some travel laundry bags with you. You can just drop them at the bottom of your closet and fill them as you go along.

This helps keep your stateroom organized. It will also help with your packing when you get ready to return home.

Whatever bags you bring will be better than what you will find in your stateroom. The bags that you typically find inside the closet are paper, and they don’t hold up well.

Can You Get Away With Doing Nothing?

Planning to pack fewer clothes does not necessarily require that you plan to do laundry. One option would be to simply pack fewer clothes and not worry about laundry at all.

I once met a solo male cruiser who was midway through six weeks’ worth of back-to-back cruises on the same ship. (Apparently, it was his first vacation in many years.) I learned that he had brought a grand total of one bag for the whole trip. It was basically half clothes and half underwear. And, he also informed me that he had no intention of doing any laundry at all.

His view was that he would just re-wear the same clothes until they were no longer socially acceptable, and then toss them. He said that it was cheaper and easier to occasionally buy a new shirt if necessary rather than fret about doing his laundry on a cruise ship.

It’s an interesting perspective. And probably one that is easier to pull off if you are traveling alone. It would probably be much harder to pull that off with kids. Since they tend to get their clothes visibly dirty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Navigating laundry services on a cruise ship doesn’t have to be daunting. Below, you’ll find answers to some common questions to help make your cruise as comfortable and convenient as possible.

Are self-serve laundry facilities available on cruise ships?

This varies by brand and sometimes across ships within the same cruise line. You will typically find self-service laundry rooms on Disney, Carnival and Princess cruise lines. These facilities usually include washing machines, dryers, and ironing boards, allowing you to take care of your laundry needs at your convenience.

Can passengers bring their own laundry detergent on a cruise?

While some cruise lines might provide detergent in their self-service laundry facilities (for purchase), you often have the option to bring your own laundry detergent on board. This can be particularly useful if you have sensitive skin or prefer a specific brand.

What are the typical costs associated with doing laundry on a cruise ship?

The costs can vary by cruise line, but expect to pay for both self-service and full-service laundry options. Self-service options, when available, usually run about $3-$4 per load. Wash and Press services and dry cleaning services are charged on a per item basis. These can range from $2-$8 for wash and press, and $7 and up for dry cleaning.

Closing Thoughts:

Making a plan to do some of your family laundry on a cruise ship while you are on vacation will help streamline your overall packing and reduce the amount of luggage you need to bring with you. And, you have a variety of options for getting it done that range from little cost with more effort to little effort with more cost. Whatever choice works best for your family will enhance your cruising experience.

What to Wear on a Cruise

By Carnival Cruise Line

Deciding what to wear on a cruise means considering many different factors: your cruise destinations and their climates, the activities you’re going to pursue onboard and on shore and your opportunities for formal dining. Deciding what to wear on a cruise to Alaska will of course be quite different to picking out what to wear on a cruise to the Caribbean .

Packing for days of beachgoing and shopping will call for different outfits for adventures like horseback riding, ziplining and ATV tours.

It’s most important that your cruise outfits are comfortable. Remember, there’s only so much room in your suitcase and stateroom , yet you’ll need enough clothing to take you from arrival to departure and every excursion in between.

Take your time and put some thought into packing for a Carnival Cruise and you’ll be ready to dress perfectly for every cruise occasion.

What to Wear: Warm Destinations

Wondering what to wear on a cruise to the Caribbean, The Bahamas or another warm destination? Packing for a cruise somewhere hot and sunny is relatively easy, and the good news is that warm-weather clothing tends to take up much less room in your suitcase.

It’s still a good idea to pack items of clothing that are versatile, for example sundresses or shorts that can take you from the beach to dinner, or shorts that work for both hiking and hanging out on deck. We suggest you pack the following:

  • At least two or three swimsuits – most passengers cruising to a warm destination spend lots of time in the pool or ocean. With multiple swimsuits you’ll never need to wear one that’s still wet.
  • Shorts – several pairs in a few different styles
  • Short-sleeved shirts, T-shirts, tank tops and/or blouses
  • One or two sundresses or skirt-and-top outfits for women
  • Several swimsuit cover-ups e.g., a cotton sundress or caftan
  • A light outer layer in case of cooler evenings e.g., a pashmina, thin cardigan or light jacket
  • Sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats
  • Water shoes or non-slip boat shoes with traction
  • A lightweight, packable waterproof jacket in case of rain

Packing for Warm Destination Excursions

Some excursions in warm-weather destinations require extra items in your suitcase . Sturdy, comfortable hiking or athletic shoes are obviously needed for hiking excursions, such as the Scenic Coastal Hike in St. Maarten or the Hop-on, Hop-off trolley tour in Key West . Also know that closed-toe shoes are mandatory for zip-lining and most horseback riding, ATV and bike tours. Check for these kinds of requirements before you set sail.

Sturdy water shoes are great for activities that take you from land to water, such as the Rainforest and Waterfall Hiking Adventure in Maui , excursions to the world-famous Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios, Jamaica and any other adventures.

family paddleboarding in the caribbean

What to Wear: Cold Destinations

If you’re cruising to a destination with a cold climate, such as Alaska or parts of Europe , it’s important to pack clothing that will keep you warm on the ship as well as on shore. Even if you’re cruising to Alaska in the middle of summer, expect temperatures to range from the mid-50s to mid-60s (degrees Fahrenheit) during the day.

Of course it’s colder at night, and during the earlier and later times in the cruise season. Rain is always a possibility too.

When packing outfits for a cruise to a colder destination , plan to dress in layers to help you    adapt to changing temperatures from day to night, as well as on and off the water. We recommend the following items:

  • Long pants in several styles e.g., jeans, khakis, fleece-lined leggings, cargo pants
  • Shorts for warmer days
  • Sweatshirts in a few different styles and weights
  • T-shirts, both long- and short-sleeved
  • Thick wool socks and thinner socks
  • A lightweight, packable rain jacket
  • Swimsuits for the sauna or spa
  • Workout gear if you plan to hit the gym. (A tip: Bring workout clothes that double as everyday wear.)
  • Comfortable walking shoes e.g., sneakers, hiking shoes, plus sandals for warmer days on board

Many shore excursions available on Alaskan cruises require some additional clothing items, especially outdoor adventures. Do some research on the excursions you’re considering and make sure you have the appropriate footwear and clothing to stay safe and comfortable.

Double up on the warm layers and include a heavier jacket or coat if you’re planning an excursion out on the water, such as the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour or the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer . Also add a warm hat, scarf and gloves to your packing list. These items are essential as well for glacier excursions like Dog Sledding on Mendenhall Glacier via Helicopter .

If you’re going hiking, biking or ATV riding, especially in a rainforest or glacial region, don’t forget a rain jacket with a hood and comfortable, waterproof hiking boots or shoes.

Clothes for Special Occasions

Cruise ships have a wide variety of restaurants onboard , and some of our restaurants enforce dress codes. Be sure to include at least one outfit that fits every requirement so that you can enjoy any restaurant you desire. At any restaurant and any time of day, you at least need to cover up your swimsuit and wear water shoes .

Avoid having to go back to your stateroom to change between pool and restaurant by bringing along cover-ups like sundresses or shorts and T-shirts.

In the evenings, some of our ships enforce a “cruise casual” dress code. For men this dress code can call for longer dress shorts or pants (jeans are OK too) and a collared polo shirt. For women, the dress code may ask for sundresses, skirts and blouses, dress shorts and capri pants are acceptable.

Don’t wear sleeveless shirts (for men), cut-off jeans, T-shirts or gym shorts.

If you want to attend a “cruise elegant” evening, bring a fancier, more formal outfit. Men can wear suits or dress slacks with a sport coat and dress shirt. For women, cocktail dresses, pantsuits or elegant skirts and blouses are appropriate. Some guests like to go all out with a tuxedo or ball gown.

Ready to Pack Your Bags?

When packing for a cruise, it’s important to dress for the occasion. The great thing about cruising is that so many different “occasions” are packed in to one vacation, from formal dining to snorkeling and sipping cool drinks by the pool or trekking through a rainforest .

Spend some time planning your outfits and we’re sure you’ll find room in your suitcase for everything you need. Remember to save a little space for souvenirs !

Note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining options may vary by  ship  and destination.

What should I wear at sea? Here's what to know about cruise line dress codes

carnival cruise washing clothes

When I was getting ready to take a cruise in October, there were a handful of items I made sure to pack: my passport, anti-nausea medicine, and a blazer and tie.

The cruise line, Holland America Line, had advised me that during the transatlantic voyage from the Netherlands to New York there would be some occasions to dress up. But after lint-rolling my jacket and multiple attempts at a half-Windsor knot, I left my stateroom and realized I may not have needed them.

While plenty of guests were decked out in jackets, dresses and slacks, others were in sartorial vacation mode, dressed in varying degrees of (in)formality.

First-time cruisers may not realize that ships have some guidelines for clothing, from formal nights to events that call for unique attire, but those rules and recommendations have evolved over time.

"It really has gotten more and more relaxed as we've gone along, especially after the pandemic," said Valerie Dorsey, a franchise owner and travel adviser at Cruise Planners.

Here's what travelers should know about what to pack and wear on their next sailing.

Do cruise lines have dress codes?

Though travelers may associate cruising with formal nights – when lines encourage passengers to dress up for dinner in certain venues, stemming from grand tradition – the onboard experience has grown more easygoing, Dorsey said.

Dorsey said she noticed a shift from true formal wear to "smart casual" or "smart elegant" clothing around 2015 and began hearing more from clients about how other travelers weren't dressing up as much, a change that has irked some guests .

Passengers have gotten more casual on regular nights, too.

That shift has only been exacerbated in the wake of COVID-19 as more travelers work from home, according to Dorsey, though some lines take formal nights more seriously and some passengers choose to go all out, regardless.

"I've seen people dress way up, meaning tuxedos, evening gowns, beautiful clothing, down to 'I'm just going to dinner at Red Lobster tonight,' " she said. "I think it's all over the place."

Enforcement of the dress codes has eased, as well.

Story continues below.

"It used to be if you walked in in a pair of shorts, they would say, 'I'm sorry, you can't enter the dining room,' and they don't even stop people anymore," Dorsey said. "So that's why it's really hard to get a handle on how you're supposed to dress."

If you want to opt out of dressing up altogether, there are parts of the ship that usually remain more casual, even on dressy or formal nights. Travelers can always head to the buffet or other casual eateries, Dorsey said, though on smaller lines more passengers may be dressed up more across the board.

Cruise lines each have their own dress codes, but we've rounded up some of the major lines' policies:

Carnival Cruise Line dress code

Passengers can wear casual clothes during the day, but the line requires smart casual clothing after 5:30 p.m. in its public lounges and restaurants or as stated in the ship's newsletter, spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an email.

The line's Cruise Casual dress code calls for collared sport shirts, casual pants or jeans – but no cut-offs – and long dress shorts for men. Women can wear items including casual dresses, blouses and skirts or pants, dress shorts and jeans.

In accordance with the dress code, passengers cannot wear regular shorts or gym shorts, bathing suit attire, beach flip-flops and other similar items in the dining room.

When the Cruise Elegant Dress Code is in effect, men can wear dress trousers and shirts, and the line recommends a sport jacket.

For women, the line calls for cocktail dresses, "elegant skirts and blouses," pantsuits or even evening gowns. Items like T-shirts, jeans, shorts and gym shorts and bathing suit attire are similarly barred from the dining room.

The length of the cruise determines the number of Cruise Elegant evenings, according to Carnival's website . The Cruise Elegant dress code applies for the main dining rooms and the Steakhouse. However, Lupoli said passengers dressed in Cruise Casual will not be turned away from those venues on Cruise Elegant nights.

Royal Caribbean International dress code

Royal Caribbean breaks its suggested attire into several categories. Casual includes polos, jeans and sundresses, but the line asks that guests wear swimwear only on the pool deck and shorts at breakfast and lunch, according to its website .

The line defines smart casual "as a step up from your typical dinner wear," including collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses. Passengers are also welcome to wear items like jackets and blazers.

For formal attire, the line said on its website, "make it a night out in your best black-tie look - suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns." The line may have one to four formal nights on a given cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

"When it comes to what to wear, you can go resort casual or get decked out and look your best – it's your call," Norwegian said on its website .

Cruise casual clothing – including jeans and shorts for men and jeans, casual dresses and shorts for women – is acceptable at the buffet and most specialty restaurants anytime during the day. Guests can wear swimwear at the buffet and outdoor restaurant as long as they have a shirt or cover-up and footwear.

Passengers cannot wear certain items such as tank tops for men, baseball caps and overly faded jeans, those that have holes in them or those worn below the hips in the main dining rooms or specialty restaurants, the line said on its website.

In Norwegian's "more formal dining room or in our more upscale specialty restaurants," the line calls for smart casual clothing, which includes slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts and tops for women, and collared shirts, jeans and slacks for men.

Holland America Line dress code

Holland America guests can dress casually during the day, though they must always wear shirts or cover-ups and footwear inside, a spokesperson for the line said in an email.

The nighttime dress code has two categories. Smart casual includes a sport shirt or sweater and slacks for men, and a sweater or blouse and a skirt or pants for women. "Shorts, pool and beachwear, distressed jeans and tank tops are not permitted in table service restaurants," the spokesperson said.

On dressy nights, the line recommends blouses, skirts, slacks, dresses, collared shirts and jackets. There will be two dressy nights on most seven-night cruises, with additional dressy nights for longer sailings. Guests can reference the ship's daily program for the evening's suggested attire.

On the line's Grand Voyages, the line recommends suits or dresses when formal attire is suggested. "Grand Voyages are 60-plus-day voyages, and this is the only time guests would be in 'formal' attire," the spokesperson said.

Cunard Line dress code

Cunard passengers can dress as they like during the day. "Then as the sun goes down, the style goes up," Cunard said in dress code guidelines provided by a spokesperson.

At night, the line asks guests to wear smart attire in the majority of its restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. That includes "smart trousers" with a collared shirt – and optional jacket and tie – for men, and blouses and skirts or "stylish trousers and dresses" for women.

The line also has at least two Gala evenings over seven days of a sailing, when passengers are invited to dress up more.

"After 6:00pm on Gala evenings, it's dinner jacket, tuxedo, or dark suit for the men with a regular tie or bow tie," the line said. "Evening or cocktail dress, smart trouser suit, or formal separates for the ladies please."

How should passengers pack for cruise line dress codes?

Dorsey recommended women bring a "nice long skirt" and a blouse or a dress. "You know, you might wear slacks every other night, but if they come upon a more formal night, then you can kind of dress something like that up," she said.

For men, she suggested packing collared shirts and nice pants – even chinos are formal enough. "And maybe throw one jacket in there and then you're prepared"

Cruise lines may also have special events that call for unique attire, such as an all-white ensemble  at Norwegian's White Hot Party.

Even if formal nights aren't as formal as they used to be, they still provide an excuse to get dressed up: cruise lines will have photographers out on those nights to take portraits of guests, Dorsey said.
