Jesse McCartney (Born 9 April 1987) is an American Pop singer, Songwriter, Actor and Voice Actor from Ardsley, New York.

McCartney’s career in show business began at an early age, when he stared as Adam Chandler, Jr. in the soap opera All My Children from 1998-2001. Around the same time he ventured into what would become the beginning of his musical career, after he joined the boy band Dream Street at the age of 12.

After a successful three years in the band and on the TV show, he decided to leave both and embark on his solo music career. He began writing and practising with a live band. He eventually released his debut album “Beautiful Soul” in 2004, after two years of production. The album was well received charting at number 15 in the US, selling over 1 million copies. A 55-stop tour of America quickly followed, as well as opening shows for Backstreet Boys.

McCartney released his follow up effort, “Right Where You Want Me” in 2006. He co-wrote all but one of the tracks on the project, and it charted one place higher than his previous album, at number 14.

Following on from his solo musical success, Jesse continued with his acting work, starring in 2008 Canadian indie movie, “Keith” and also making his first step into the world of voice acting, lending his talents to the movies “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and “Horton Hears a Who!”

Between 2007 and 2009, McCartney turned his hand to writing song for others; such as the Leona Lewis smash hit “Bleeding Love”. He then released his third album, “Departure”, a more mature sounding LP, in 2008. It featured collaborations with the likes of rapper Ludacris and T-Pain. The single “It’s Over” is McCartney’s most successful track to date, charting at number 10 and selling platinum.

McCartney’s most recent work was 2014’s “In Technicolor” which was finally released after four years of label issues and rewriting.

Live reviews

Starting his music career at the age of 10 in the pop boyband Dream Street, was great stepping stone for Jesse McCartney as he began his solo venture. As he matured he explored other genres slowly moving away from the pop image that had initially been created for him. His debut solo album “Beautiful Soul” released in 2004 was still poppy but with an urban twist reached number 15 on the Billboard charts. Seeking growth and personal development, McCartney’s subsequent album releases “Departure” (2009) and “Have It All” (2010) deals with more mature themes and moves more towards R&B allowing him to showcase his song-writing capabilities. McCartney co-wrote Leona Lewis’ smash hit “Bleeding Love” with One Republic’s Ryan Tedder and since has become greatly sought after for his writing.

As McCartney has matured so have his performances. Many of his fans will have followed his career through Dream Street to present day, many still revering him as the teenage heartthrob as he charms the crowd on stage. Now is a chance for him to mirror his mature sound with his style by adorning sharp suits on stage, dancing across the stage and serenading the ladies which of course is met by a wave of screams. Accompanied by a full band, McCartney struts across the stage oozing confidence as he works the attentive crowd. Jesse McCartney is a natural talent with a plethora of irresistible catchy tunes.

Jesse's first time playing in Austin, Texas was memorable and certainly not the last either. He made a small venue feel like a stage at Coachella: massive singing, dancing and screaming. He truly let his comical side shine through when teasing fans about music and his band members. Jesse rocked the show and performed new music from his upcoming 2019 album sneak peek released later this year hopefully. His expressions in every performance of a song was surely not to forget and he had made it a very special time for himself as well, now a marking a new experience for him as well being in Austin. Jesse's Q & A for the VIP meet & greet was very fun and honest, again with teasing new music to be released and talk of Dream Street for the die-hard fans, of course, and what kind of potatoe he would like to have for the rest of his life (loaded btw). The meet & greet part was very rewarding in of itself and made the night worth it all in the cold of 7 hours. Jesse McCartney has never been a person or artist that you should over look, seeing him is definitely a dream come true and a day/night you'll never forget. He is the inspiration to me as well to many other of fans across the globe, and his music transpires through people as being a singer-songwriter and actor. Look forward to any/all of his performances. Jesse McCartney is a legend and the thought of kindness and love in a human body.

Just charge it to my account

I hope I haven't gone over my limit

With interest rates so swift

No need to scream and shout

No doubt if women are from Venus now

I'll get to them somehow

All I want to do is please you

Please myself by living my life too

And all the stupid things I do

Have absolutely no reflection on How I feel about you

How I feel about

All the stupid things I do have absolutely no reflection on

How I feel about you

How I feel about you yeah

Oh yes I recall

Skipping on breakfast to play basketball

Then feeling two feet small

Sometimes you read like William Shakes

Your scent is sweet like Betty Crooker bakes

I'd love to have your cake and eat it to

Oh how I feel about you

Swoon. That is the reaction of most girls who grew up in the 90s when you ask them about Jesse McCartney. I mean a multi-talented singer, songwriter and actor, its really no surprise that so many 90s girls had crushes on him.

Now, I wasn’t exactly one of these girls, but one of my friends growing up was, and so when he came to town to perform, I was asked if I wanted to go along with her. I was actually a bit surprised at how well the show turned out, and had ended up having a lot of fun (probably because pretty much the entire audience consisted of my peers). As a vocalist he is good, but what really gave him such star quality was the catchiness of a majority of his songs. I was surprised to find myself singing all the words to “Beautiful Soul,” and “Leaving,” even though I hadn’t listened to those songs in ages. Add to that surprise the fact that everyone else in the crowd was also singing along and you felt like you were transported back to the careless days of middle school, hanging out with your friends. The sheer nostalgia that his show brought was really what made it a great show.

If it is this year in Brisbane i will love to go there and see him for the first time to be on stage and he knows me. I hope if i had the vip to spend more time with him and greet him on my own there and going home the next day will be surprising for me because i love his songs and they are amazing and his perfume that i want is what i been looking for. I have a diary exposed about my songs that i wrote for him to do the duet together called breakdown of yours which is about the breakup song choice about our past breakups that cheat on us. I hope you can sing that together with me and music too. i write the songs so that really inspires me the most. from Andrea Kay Barry

It was the first time I saw Jesse McCartney live, and I'm soo glad I finally had the chance. The concert was Incredible!!! The energy he brought to the stage blew me away. He put every thing into every song making each song perfect. Jesse knows how to connect with his fans and gives them a performance that they will remember. He sang pretty much every song on his new album and all the other hits that his fans love! The man definitely knows how to make his fans happy. It was the greatest night of my life so far and I will be going to as many of his concerts that I can!

Since the start of his career, New York-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, artist, and actor Jesse McCartney has built a catalog of instantly recognizable anthems and captivated audiences on the road and on-screen. His first three albums—the Platinum Beautiful Soul[2004], Right Where You Want Me[2006], and Departure[2008]—consecutively bowed in the Top 15 of the BillboardTop 200 with the singles “Beautiful Soul” minted Gold and “Leavin’” certified Platinum. Plus, he collaborated with T-Pain on the cross-genre banger “Body Language.” Meanwhile, SPINtouted In Technicolor among its “Top 20 Pop Albums of 2014.” Along the way, he performed in arenas alongside the likes of New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys in addition to packing global headline tours and hosting shows for both George W. Bush and Barack Obama. A sought-after songwriter, he notably wrote the 4x-Platinum GRAMMY® Award-nominated “Bleeding Love” for Leona Lewis. In 2018, the one-off single

“Better With You” racked up nearly 30 million cumulative streams and paved the way for his fifth offering. Simultaneously, his acting credits grew to include everything from Chernobyl Diaries and Fear The Walking Dead to Alvin and the Chipmunks, and even voicing the character Roxas/Ventus in gamer favorite Kingdom Hearts. In 2020, Jesse was revealed as the runner-up and popular fan-favorite Turtle in the third season finale of Fox’s The Masked Singer. Now, he opens up more than ever on his fifth full-length album New Stage, due out later this year. His second single “Friends,” an homage to the people who became chosen family, followed the release of “Yours” in 2020, an introspective look at the different roles he’s played throughout his life. Then there’s “Kiss The World Goodbye,” the third release from the forthcoming album. Soft piano gives way to an impressive vocal performance. Handclaps build towards a heavenly hook inspired by his future wife. As he notes, it catalogs a “Bonnie and Clyde moment about me and my lady ready to take on anything and everything. At this point in my life, everything feels like it’s clicking into place. I’m looking forward to a whole new stage.”

Soul translates everywhere. Whether in front of a computer microphone, in the driver’s seat of a car, sitting up on a couch, presiding over a sold out venue, or in front of a television camera, Jamie Miller packs raw conviction into every performance. Often inches from tears, yet intensely confident, the Wales-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and artist leaves everything on stage and on tape. Putting up nearly 20 million views across various platforms and earning praise of everyone from P!nk to Jennifer Hudson to Kelly Clarkson, he transfers this emotion into his upcoming debut on Atlantic Records in 2020.

“If you watch a video of me singing on Instagram by myself or see me in-person at a show, I always give it my all,” he affirms. “Every time I sing, it’s an opportunity to show people who I am, so I try to do 110%. I’m at peace knowing that.”

Growing up in the working-class city of Cardiff, Jamie publicly shied away from his natural talent. Worried about what his rugby and football player friends might think, he downplayed his passion and ambition. At the same time, he harbored an obsession for gospel, R&B, and soul fostered by mom and dad. His parents introduced him to Motown classics and the catalogues of Donny Hathaway and Michael Jackson at home — even though he often hid under the table in choir class, “so no one could see I was there from the outside,” he admits. After high school, Jamie took a job in a call center as he quietly honed his voice and listened to Bruno Mars, Sam Smith, and more.

“I knew I wanted to do music forever,” he goes on. “I never had a ‘Plan B.’ I come from a really small town. If you walk down the street, you’ll know everybody. It’s one of those places where you keep to yourself though. People have office jobs; they don’t become singers. I kept it a secret, because I was afraid of what everyone might think.”

Nevertheless, in 2017, at 18 years old, he mustered up the courage to leave home, temporarily move to London and appeared for the first time on broadcast TV in the UK, which led to an explosive online presence and viral displays of his incredible talent. Signing to Atlantic Records soon after, he relocated to Los Angeles and dove into writing and recording new music. A change of scenery, just the right amount of culture shock, and countless sessions shaped his signature soul-pop style.

“My sound crystallized when I moved to L.A.,” he admits. “When I was living in the UK, I was in my comfort zone. I knew my surroundings. I never really experienced anything I was afraid of. When I got here, I was in the studio every day. I had to write about my feelings. I didn’t know many people at the time, so I put everything into my music. I figured out what I wanted to do as an artist. I was such a shy and nervous kid. I’d put myself down. I didn’t really feel like I deserved the opportunity because of where I came from. L.A. can be a tough place, but it made me realize dreams do come true. It feels like home now.”

In the end, Jamie’s truth shines anywhere and everywhere as much as his voice does.

“I want everyone to know my music comes from a real place,” he leaves off. “It’s my life. I aim to give them three minutes of happiness. I came from a town where there wasn’t much opportunity, but I was willing to get out and move to the other side of the world. I’ve gotten strength from the journey. I hope to share it in the music.”

Jesse McCartney Reveals How He Really Feels About His Hit 'Beautiful Soul' 20 Years After Its Release (Exclusive)

The singer released his latest EP 'All's Well' on April 5 and is kicking off a 24-city U.S. tour on the 12

Twenty years may have gone by, but Jesse McCartney still remembers hearing his debut song on the radio for the very first time.

The singer, who turns 37 on Tuesday, April 9 and released a new EP called All’s Well on Friday, April 5, tells PEOPLE that “Beautiful Soul” is the tune that changed his life.

“I remember the first time I heard that song, I was coming out of my SAT exam and I heard it on the radio on Z100,” he says, “and I remember thinking I didn't have to worry about what was going on with my SATs because I had made it!”

Paul Hawthorne/Getty

The song, which was released in 2004, climbed international charts. In the United States, the track peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, surpassed only by McCartney’s “Leavin’,” which hit No. 10 four years later.

“It was sort of the beginning of this career that would transpire, and I remember traveling the world and going overseas and people that didn't speak English knew the song and knew my name,” McCartney recalls. “I couldn't communicate with them linguistically, but through music we could, and it was really this special, crazy moment.”

And while hearing his song on the radio for the first time made his exam score seem inconsequential, McCartney did in fact fair “pretty good.”

“I mean, I did OK. I think I took it twice. I think the first time I kind of bombed it. I think the second time I got a 1210 or something, 1220. I was never an academic, but I did really well in English. I was not great at math,” he says with a laugh.

Sam Dameshek

Fast forward two decades, however, and McCartney is still “rocking with” the platform and the career that he says “Beautiful Soul” helped launch. His latest single has the cheeky title “Make a Baby ( feat. Yung Gravy )", and he's gearing up for a 24-city U.S. tour beginning April 12.

McCartney says the song’s inspiration is just as the title suggests, and he and his wife, Katie Peterson , are beginning to dabble with the idea of expanding their own family.

“ We got married two years ago , and I think that is the next step for us. But I mean, the song title was just inspired by trying to make a baby and how that works, where you're forced to perform at all hours of the day,” he says. “But we're not pregnant. We're certainly going down that road and talking about it.”

“Make a Baby” is included as one of the five tracks on All’s Well , which McCartney describes as a “vintage and sexy” EP.

“It was just nice to do pop music like that again, which I haven't done in a really long time. And as far as the title goes, there is a song on the EP called 'The Well,' and it just sort of was a play on that because it's probably one of the more morose songs on the record, but I think I just wanted to leave the listener with sort of a redemptive touch, which is that all is well despite that song and despite the rest of the project,” McCartney says.

"And after 20 years of just making music, it just felt like a really nice, subtle, ‘Hey, all is still good. All is well.’”

Jesse McCartney , the American actor and singer-songwriter, brought his  All’s Well Tour to the Howard Theatre D.C., where he played for a completely sold-out show comprised of loyal and long-time fans. The multi-city tour follows the recent release of his 2024 EP, All’s Well, an album which embraces a more soulful, funky-retro sound within its five addictive tracks. During his iconic performance, the audience enjoyed popular songs from throughout his notable career, and were treated to a few fun surprises along the way.

Opening the night was Just Seconds Apart ; hailing from Arizona. Triplets Sela , Ari , and Alex warmed up the packed venue with their classic pop-rock sounds. Playing a few popular covers, such as “As It Was” by Harry Styles, as well as a few tracks from their own discography – like “Old Cartoons” and “Good to Know” – their music was well received by the crowd who enthusiastically joined in clapping and with their phone lights when requested. Toward the end of their set, they chatted about their family background and asked to record a short video of the crowd cheering so they could send it to their father at home. Before departing the stage, they introduced their mother who assisted in taking a fun group photo in front of the audience.

With the crowd thoroughly energized and all levels of the venue filled, Jesse McCartney finally took to the stage. His intricate setup consisted of a multi-level platform with a beautiful red microphone stand at the top of a lighted staircase. Jesse appeared behind the mic center stage, opening his show with “Silver Spoon,” a favorite track from his recently released EP.

Jesse spent the first half of the night playing many well-known songs from across his discography, such as “Yours”, “Faux Fur,” “Shake,” and “Wasted.” He then played an acoustic mini set while sitting on the lighted steps. With his band surrounding him, they performed a cover of “More Than Words,” followed by another throwback, “Just So You Know.”

Right before taking a short intermission, Jesse decided to invite a fan up on the stage. After much deliberation over the screaming crowd, he finally settled on one lucky person a few rows in. As she made her way up he introduced her, “Make some noise for my new friend, Sarah!”

Sarah was invited to sit on a small stool, and Jesse began to serenade her with “Party For Two.” Throughout the song, Jesse took a knee, held her hand, and got up close and personal while she silently reacted in both disbelief and utter excitement.

Heading into the second half of the night following a short wardrobe change, Jesse’s piano was rolled out and a classic, vintage-style silver microphone was set up. Against dreamy white lights, Jesse simultaneously played and sang a few tracks, including “Bleeding Love” which he wrote for  Leona Lewis in 2007. Another memorable moment occurred a few songs later during the upbeat and recently released “Make A Baby.” While Jesse danced around the stage a bra was tossed, and he impressively caught it without even a misstep in his performance. It was so perfectly timed that the crowd went wild as he swung it around to the beat of the song.

Closing out the show Jesse invited fans to sing along to “Beautiful Soul,” and after the first few chords he shouted, “Twenty years old this year baby!” The announcement hit everyone with a massive wave of happiness and nostalgia, and the energy throughout the venue was at an all-time high. The crowd cheered and sang along until the very end, and Jesse finished by thanking everyone and waving while he ascended the staircase and disappeared behind the curtains.

After an evening full of nostalgia and great memories, people began departing the venue while taking photos with each other in their happy post-show haze, lining up for last-minute merch purchases, and a handful of lucky fans began to prepare for their long-awaited meet and greet moments. There are still many more stops left in the All’s Well Tour , so be sure to catch his iconic performance in a city near you.

Concert Review | Jesse McCartney Still Has a Beautiful Soul

Katarina Keeley , Photo Coordinator May 20, 2022

“Are you all excited for Jamie Miller and Jesse McCartney?” exclaimed singer Casey Baer.

Lots of people screamed in the audience after that. Baer was one of the two opening acts for the Jesse McCartney concert at The Fillmore Theater in Detroit. She performed some of her songs including “Not that Girl,” “Take it Personal” and “R.I.P,” Baer also sang a cover of Tate McRae’s “She’s All I Wanna Be.” She performed with her guitarist Gray Trainer and drummer Shep Martin. Their amazing performance got the crowd pumped up for the next act. During her set, she talked to the crowd about her breakup and people in the crowd showered her in support. She even took the time to meet her fans for photos and autographs after her set.

jesse mccartney tour uk

The next act was Jamie Miller. In 2017, he was featured on The Voice UK where he was on Jennifer Hudson’s team and came in third place overall. When he came on stage, girls’ screams filled the venue. He sang “Over You,” “It Is What It Is,” “I Lost Myself in Loving You” and sang a cover of Imagine Dragons’ song “Demons.” He also spoke with the crowd about his relationships and took the time to also meet some fans after the show. One fan told him, “Hi, I couldn’t believe you were playing here. I am going to be playing your song at my wedding.” He was smiling and speechless. Miller seemed touched by the comment and all the fans who wanted photos with him.

The headliner of the “New Stage” tour was Jesse McCartney. McCartney has had a phenomenal career so far. When he was starting out, he appeared on TV shows like The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Hannah Montana . He also has voice acted in films such as the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise and Horton Hears a Who! More recently, he was a contestant on The Masked Singer during season three and won second place as the “Turtle.” But Jesse McCartney is most known for his singing. His name appeared on the stage in huge font. It was not long until he got on stage and fans started screaming. He sang many of his hit songs, including new songs from his latest album, “New Stage.”

“So we’re gonna play a few songs from the new album tonight, but we also are going to perform some throwbacks,” McCartney said.

jesse mccartney tour uk

The crowd screamed excitedly after that. He played songs like “She’s No You,” “Selfless,” “Leavin” and “Shake.” His dancing kept the crowd entertained. McCartney had a piano brought out for him to play a cover of a song that he co-wrote for Leona Lewis, “Bleeding Love.” He had a classic retro microphone attached to the piano and  fans sang right along with him.

When his band started playing one of his biggest songs, “Beautiful Soul,” the whole crowd sang along. McCartney watched his fans sing the song with him; it was a beautiful sight.

That was not the only sweet moment that happened that night. McCartney interacted with his fans throughout the show. In fact, he had a chair put out on the stage so he could dedicate a song to a lucky fan.

“I want to play you guys a song that I wrote for this album. It’s a pretty romantic song. So, I don’t want to sing it to nobody. I’d like to bring somebody on stage,” McCartney said.

Right after he said that, many girls decided to get closer to the stage, wanting to be picked. He picked a girl near the front row and brought her up on stage. He sang “Party for Two” to her. He made a point to give her his attention. He danced around her and even got on one knee to sing to her. It’s safe to say that she felt pretty special that night.

She was not the only lucky fan that night. He started talking about something that happened to him recently, after he finished one of his songs. He spoke about a fan sending him a message on social media.

“She forwarded me a TikTok that I otherwise probably wouldn’t have seen. She messaged me, ‘take a look at this.’ So, I clicked on it and it was a young mom by the name of Brooke Butler. Is she out here tonight?” McCartney asked.

Butler was in the front row with her daughter.

“I got reached out from Brooke requesting, a pretty intense request that I do not usually get, and I thought I would share it with you guys tonight. If that’s okay with you that I share this story?” McCartney asked, looking at the two young women.

jesse mccartney tour uk

“So, Brooke being the amazing mother that she is, reached out to me and said, ‘My daughter has been having some really dark thoughts lately and has considered some really terrible things,” McCartney said.

He took a brief pause and said, “It hit me really hard.” It was clear to the audience this story had him choking up.

“It hit me really hard because Brooke sent me the video and said when you were your daughter’s age you also had similar feelings. The only thing that kept you going was the fact that you were pregnant with her, your daughter. Seeing this was so special to me,” said McCartney.

The crowd listened to his words and realized this was serious. Everyone learned that the daughter was twelve years old after he asked her directly.

“Listen to me. I can’t even imagine how hard it is to navigate life at twelve right now. It’s a different world than when I was twelve. I know it’s even harder, but just know that there are so many people around you, including your mom, who love you so much. We all go through dark times and there’s always somebody there. There’s somebody next to you that loves you very much and this whole audience,” said McCartney.

The crowd roared with support for her.

“There’s always somebody. You could DM me girl, with anything that you need. On the count of three, ‘We love you.’ One, two, three,” McCartney said, pointing to the crowd.

“We love you!” shouted the crowd.

“And with that, I want to dedicate this next song to you. This is called, ‘Better With You,’” McCartney said.

jesse mccartney tour uk

Throughout the performance there were moments where there were visible tears welling up in his eyes, as the crowd waved their phone lights back and forth.

For the last song, he played “Right Where You Want Me,” a popular song on Disney’s Original Movie soundtrack for Return to Halloweentown. The crowd sang along to that famous song as well. He ended the night with one of his first songs from 2009, “How Do You Sleep?” Fans were jumping and dancing along with him as they sang along.

Jesse McCartney showed fans in Detroit how talented he is and that he’s not going anywhere. He made it a special night for many of his fans, which goes to show that he still has a “Beautiful Soul.”

Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Lana Del Rey Star at U.K.’s Ivor Novello Awards

As he picked up his Ivor Novello Award in London Thursday, Bruce Springsteen told a story about the first time he came to the U.K.’s capitol city.

In 1975, Springsteen and his band arrived at Heathrow Airport famished, and went in search of a cheeseburger — only to find that such exotic cuisine had yet to make it to that side of the pond, with only fish ‘n’ chips available.

Popular on Variety

Nearly 50 years on, U.K. tastes have changed – and so have the Ivors, now officially known as the Ivors with Amazon Music. So, while Thursday’s ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel was the 69th Ivors, it was the very first to reward an international songwriter with its highest honor, making Springsteen a Fellow of its Academy.

(Side note: Springsteen’s culinary preferences may also have moved on, if the très European charcuterie-and-cheese-board specially requested for his table, while everyone else dined on guinea fowl, was anything to go by.)

Springsteen’s Fellowship means he joined an elite club alongside the likes of Kate Bush, Elton John, Annie Lennox and the man who inducted him, Paul McCartney .

Macca’s arrival on stage caused ripples of genuine excitement in even this jaded, slightly sozzled industry crowd, which soon turned into howls of laughter as the ex-Beatle roasted his American friend.

“Unlike Bruce’s concerts, I’m going to keep this brief,” McCartney quipped, before adding: “I was wondering how Bruce would fit into the Beatles. When it comes to talent, he was definitely in the Top 5.”

It was the sort of moment only the Ivors can deliver: two legendary figures supremely relaxed not only in each other’s company, but in front of a crowd happy to provide a safe space where, for one day at least, the art of songwriting can take center stage.

Springsteen chuckled away during the speech, hugging McCartney before delivering a trademark sincere response. Complaining of losing his voice after playing a show in “hellacious weather” in Sunderland the night before, he paid tribute to the influence of McCartney’s former band, the Rolling Stones and the Animals. “While I was stone cold born in the bowels of the U.S.A,, at 16, I desperately yearned to be British.”

He also hailed his record company Sony Music Group, especially British chairman Rob Stringer (“I sold all my music and they still treat it like it’s mine,” he said of his 2021 deal for Sony to acquire his recording and publishing catalogs). The less said about his attempt at a British accent the better, but there was no doubting his appreciation of his “long and beautiful history” in this country.

“As we flew towards the U.K. in 1975, all I was wondering was, ‘What do I have that I could conceivably give back to those people who gave me so much?’ The answer is, everything I’ve got. I want to thank you for taking my music into your hearts and into your souls, and for including me in the challenging and beautiful cultural life of the U.K.,” he said.

As it turned out, the Boss was not the only splash of American razzmatazz at this year’s Ivors. Organizers had shifted the start time back from its traditional morning kick-off to mid-afternoon, allowing America – on the East Coast at least – to tune in to the new, shiny behind-the-scenes coverage on Twitch (although many diehard British execs were still in a nearby pub, the Audley, long after the official start time, proof that some Ivors traditions will live forever).

Furthermore, the Special International Award was presented to Lana Del Rey by Universal Music Publishing Group CEO,Jody Gerson.

Gerson – part of a strong U.S.-based publishing presence that also included Warner Chappell’s co-chairs Guy Moot and Carianne Marshall – called Del Rey “a true original who would be a brilliant artist in any era. She’s iconic, she’s influential, her career transcends genres and her songs and music will stand the test of time. She’s a treasure.”

Gerson stressed the best was yet to come for the influential artist – unless, she said, Del Rey chooses to become “a waitress in a waffle house in Alabama,” a suggestion that saw the star give two thumbs up to the cameras.

Del Rey revealed she’d recently turned down the chance to do a stadium tour after her Coachella triumph.

“After Coachella, everyone kind of treated me like a brand-new artist, like, ‘Oh, she’s back’,” she said. “I said, it’s like being in a new ship but I don’t just want to go forward and do a stadium tour, I want to figure out how to turn it into a glass ship that can fly. And I don’t even know what that means – but I’m going to find out.”

So far, so transatlantically kooky. But there was also plenty of no-nonsense Britishness on display as host Lauren Laverne breezed through proceedings, even taking the Ivors’ own Oscars moment in her stride, when Bat For Lashes, handed the wrong envelope, read out the incorrect winner of the Best Original Film Score award (“Poor Things” was swiftly instated as the rightful victor).

Ivors Academy chairman Tom Gray – now also a prospective Member of Parliament, and one of the few political figures not to drop out of attending the ceremony after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called a snap general election the night before – billed the Ivors as “the biggest celebration of songwriting anywhere in the world,” but also warned: “Songwriters should not be taken for granted.”

He was not alone. This season’s serial award winner, Raye , picked up Songwriter of the Year and brought her grandfather – a former aspiring songwriter who, according to Raye, “had a song stolen from him that was huge” – up on stage.

“This is for all the songwriters who never even made it into this room, that just needed a break,” she said, before repeating her call for record labels to give songwriters points on master recordings and travel/food expenses for sessions.

“This is not a joke,” she fumed, as the crowd gave her a standing ovation (and a few major label executives squirmed in their seats). “We are so important. I’m talking about the voiceless beating heart of this industry, which is songwriters. We need to come together.”

Elsewhere, Squeeze songwriter Chris Difford delivered a hilarious speech as he presented KT Tunstall with the Outstanding Song Collection prize.

“KT has recently joined the long list of people who have supported Squeeze and gone on to much better things,” he quipped. “R.E.M., the Police, Bon Jovi, the Jam, Dire Straits and U2 have all supported Squeeze over the years. Today proves that a support slot with Squeeze is the gift that keeps on giving. Unless, of course, you’re A Flock of Seagulls…”

In return, Tunstall announced a new publishing deal with BMG (scooping the official announcement the following day) and recalled her first Ivors win back in 2006 for “Suddenly I See,” when she wrote in her journal: “Oh my God, I won a fucking Ivor. I had no idea that was going to happen and I wore my really crap jeans.” “So I dressed up this time,” she noted.

In response, Taupin apologized for the time when he and the then-Reg Dwight were just “jobbing songwriters” and entered a prospective song for the U.K.’s Eurovision Song Contest entry, which Lulu had to sing on TV as part of the selection process (the song wasn’t selected and Lulu eventually became the Contest’s joint winner with a different tune, “Boom Bang-a-Bang”).

“In the interim between that godawful song and today, maybe I did something right in order to win this,” Taupin said.

There were plenty of newer faces too. Skepta picked up the Visionary Award (“I know all the songwriters in the room are feeling like what we do has no value anymore, and technology could just do what we do. But our talent is not something that can be taken away”).

Dave collected the PRS for Music Most Performed Work for his Central Cee collaboration, “Sprinter” (“As a songwriter myself, to see this many people share the same sentiment in one building is amazing to see”).

And last year’s Rising Star winner Victoria Canal returned to win Best Song Musically & Lyrically for “Black Swan” (a song she also performed live at the awards).

It all added up to a vibrant ceremony with notably more international star power than its usually more high-profile recorded music rival, the Brit Awards.

Whether the Ivors can keep it up, now that its top award is, presumably, open to all comers, remains to be seen – and much of the chat at the aftershow centered on how organizers could possibly top this year’s McCartney-Springsteen combination.

But that can wait. This year, there was only one way to end proceedings, as Springsteen grabbed a guitar and a harmonica and wheezed his way through “Thunder Road,” his voice cracking but still energizing a crowd that couldn’t quite believe they had a front row seat for a show you only usually see in stadiums.

And, as everyone dispersed to the parties, Springsteen’s speech still stuck in the memory.

“Once this was only a dream I had, today it’s real,” he said. “I guess London’s finally ready for… cheeseburgers.” And, as the Ivors head off into a potential bold international future, the only question that remains is: Do you want fries with that?
