Carnival Miracle Itineraries

Carnival miracle review, review of carnival miracle.

The 2004-built Carnival Miracle cruise ship is the 4th/last of the SPIRIT-class CCL liners, with sisterships the fleetmates Legend , Spirit and Pride , as well as Costa 's liners Atlantica and Mediterranea . The USD 375-million liner was last refurbished in 2020.

The vessel (IMO number 9237357) is currently Panama- flagged (MMSI 354277000) and registered in Colon .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Miracle cruise ship

The 2124-passenger ship Carnival Miracle and her Spirit-class sisters represented some significant firsts for Carnival: amazing alternative steakhouses found on each Carnival new-build thereafter and onboard wedding chapels. Spirit-class cruise ships also offer an awesome 80 % ratio of outside cabins, as well as lots of nice little touches - such as museum-quality artwork and "designer" martinis.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Miracle staterooms (1062 total, in 28 categories) include 50 Suites, 634 Balcony, 171 Oceanview and 215 Inside cabins. The ship has 17 wheelchair-accessible cabins but no Spa cabins. Most cabins are sized 185 ft2 (17 m2). Most cabin balconies are sized 40 ft2 (4 m2). Suites are 4 types (Grand, Vista, Ocean, Junior), the largest are Grand Suites (300 ft2 / 28 m2 plus 115 ft2 / 11 m2 terrace).

The boat has 12 passenger decks , of which 6 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Carnival Miracle's main restaurant for dinner is the Bacchus Dining Room, which is named after the Greek god of wine. There is only one dining room on all Spirit-class ships, while even older Carnival ships feature two main restaurants. However, the two-deck-high Bacchus easily accommodates all guests in two seatings or on a flexible basis, via "Your Choice Dining" program. Nick and Nora's, situated under the skylight in Carnival's red funnel, offers unforgettable dinner that is worth the $30 charge considering the exquisite atmosphere, extra-attentive service and the quality of the meals. Horatio's lido buffet is a one-level restaurant boasting full breakfast and lunch buffets. It is also a casual dinner alternative and late-night bistro. A sushi cart is set up each afternoon outside of Maguire's Bar with rotating options like shrimp, assorted rolls and salmon, all free of charge. Sake is also available, unfortunately not complimentary.

Carnival Miracle cruise ship

Follows the complete list of Carnival Miracle restaurants and food bars.

  • Bacchus Restaurant (1122-seat aft Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings, or “Your Time Dining”; offers “Seuss At Sea” themed breakfasts for $5; with the 36-seat Ariadne Room restaurant annex).
  • Nick and Nora’s Steakhouse (744-seat reservations only restaurant, serving seafood and prime beef steaks; with dance floor and stage for live performances)
  • Horatio’s Lido Buffet Restaurant (1396-seat self-service restaurant with complimentary food stations; operates as dinner bistro in the evenings)
  • Sushi Bar (complimentary).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Still, Joe Farcus always has a theme, and Carnival Miracle's is "fictional icons" - passenger hallways feature drawings of popular literary characters such as Robin Hood and Robinson Crusoe (and the more darken Belgian detective Hercule Poirot). The lobby and atrium are called after the Metropolis of "Superman" fame, and there is also a Gotham lounge, which gets its name from "Batman".

Carnival Miracle cruise ship

The 3-level main show lounge on Carnival Miracle is fashioned after "The Phantom of the Opera" and Paris Opera House. The elaborate production shows include a high-energy popular music medley from the last decades, called "Legends", as well as a Beatles-themed production. Frankenstein's Lab is ship's 2-deck disco. It received new carpeting and furniture as part of the recent refurbishment.

Follows the complete list of Carnival Miracle lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

  • Mad Hatter’s Ball Lounge (425-seat, hosts Punchliner Comedy Club/brunch)

Itineraries

Carnival Miracle itinerary program is based on departures from Los Angeles (Long Beach CA) and week-long roundtrip Hawaii and Mexico Riviera cruises to Puerto Vallarta , Cabo San Lucas , and Mazatlan . There were plans for Carnival Miracle to be repositioned to Asia (China, early 2018), but those were later canceled. In 2018-2019, the ship operates on 7-day Western Caribbean cruises from homeport Tampa .

In Tampa, Miracle joined Carnival Paradise (operating 4-8-day itineraries) to Caribbean and Cuba. Both ships had combined annual passenger shipping capacity from Tampa around 280,000. The 7-day Tampa cruise departures are on Saturdays or Sundays. Itineraries visit Cozumel Mexico, Grand Cayman Island, Roatan Island (Mahogany Bay) and Belize City. The 6-day itineraries offer day-long port stays in Cozumel, Belize City and Costa Maya (or Roatan). The 8-day Panama Canal cruises (departures 2018 - April 14, Sept. 8) and 2019 (Feb 2, April 6) offer partial transition and stops in Costa Rica (Limon) and Grand Cayman Island. A special 14-day "Carnival Journeys" itinerary (roundtrip Panama Canal cruise from Tampa) was scheduled for December 2, 2018, visiting Cozumel, Limon, Panama Canal (transit), Cartagena Colombia, Aruba, Curacao, Jamaica (Montego Bay).

Starting December 1, 2019, Carnival Miracle is homeported in San Diego CA for a 3-month season to Hawaii (14-15-day) and Mexico (5-7-day). In 2020, for the first time, Carnival offers roundtrips from San Francisco CA with Carnival Miracle cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, and Mexico (itineraries lengths 4- to 15 days). The ship returns to homeport Diego for winter 2020-2021 schedule (3- to 15-day voyages). With San Francisco, Carnival had a total of 19 homeports in North America. The San Francisco homeporting starts on March 19, 2020, and includes 4-day weekend cruises to Ensenada (departing Thursdays, returning back on Mondays). 5- and 6-day itineraries visit Ensenada, San Diego, and Catalina Island .

In 2021, Carnival Miracle had planned 10-11-day roundtrips to Alaska from San Francisco . The other Carnival Alaskan ship was Carnival Freedom (homeported in Seattle WA ). However, due to the Coronavirus crisis and Canada's extended (through 2022) ban on cruise ships, CCL's entire Alaska 2021 program was canceled.

The ships 2024-205 schedule (fall-winter-spring/beginning October 16th, 2024) includes roundtrips from Galveston Texas with itineraries ranging 9-10-11-12 days.

Carnival Miracle Wiki

Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade was done in 2015. Miracle is Carnival's last SPIRIT-class liner, with sisterships Legend , Pride , Spirit and also Costa Atlantica and Costa Mediterranea .

The vessel was christened by godmother Jessica Lynch (retired US Army private). The inaugural cruise/maiden voyage started from Jacksonville Florida on February 27, 2004. The 3-night Bahamas itinerary visited Freeport . In summer 2004, Carnival Miracle was deployed on the East Coast USA for 7-day roundtrips from NYC New York and Baltimore Maryland , and in November started a year-round homeporting in Tampa Florida .

The vessel (Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki Shipyard hull number 503) was delivered by STX Finland on January 17, 2004. It has volume 85942 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 7089 tons, max draught 8 m. The powerplant is based on 6x Wartisla marine diesel engines (model 9L46C) with combined output 62,37 MW (83640 hp). The propulsion is based on 2x Azipod thrusters with combined output 35,2 MW (47200). The registered shipowner is CARNIVAL CORPORATION & PLC, while the registered manager is CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES INC.

Staterooms with oceanview are 80%, of which 80% have private balconies. The vessel has an 11-story Metropolis Atrium featuring a ceiling is made of ruby-red glass. Miracle ship's interior design theme is "fictional icons" (done by Joe Farcus). There are drawings of the famous Robinson Crusoe, Robin Hood and Hercule Poirot. Miracle's cruise passengers can visit the Gotham Lounge – a name taken from the Batman movie. On board, there are a wedding chapel and alternative steakhouse. In January 2012 the Miracle ship was refurbished and more trendy Carnival's features were added, like the Serenity adult deck.

In March 2013 the ship was repositioned through Panama Canal from New York to California to replace Carnival Splendor there. There was a plan for Miracle to be deployed to Asia in spring 2017 for roundtrips from China (year-round Shanghai port departures). However, this decision was revised, and Miracle stayed in North America. According to CCL's' ship deployment schedule, the Carnival Asia-based ships were Carnival Splendor (repositioned from Miami to China in spring 2018) and Carnival Spirit (during 2017-2018 winter season only). Both ships were to be homeported in Shanghai.

As part of "Carnival Journeys" itinerary program (offering longer enrichment-themed voyages), in 2017 (September 2-16) Carnival Miracle had scheduled a 14-day Alaskan roundtrip from Los Angeles/Long Beach CA . This was CCL's ever first Alaskan roundtrip itinerary from California. It also included CCL's maiden visit to Icy Strait Point/Hoonah and a full-day passage through Glacier Bay .

The list of onboard activities included Alaska-themed cultural and culinary events and themed seminars (photography, arts, crafts, cooking, celestial navigation).

The Alaskan shore excursions included hiking, sea kayaking, canoeing, helicopter flightseeing tours, lake snorkeling. Next is shown the itinerary's call ports (dates and times).

Prices started from USD 1630 pp (double occupancy interior cabin rates).

Carnival Miracle refurbishments review

The ship's last drydock refurbishment was in 2022 (October-November). The scheduled maintenance and class works were conducted at Vigor Shipyard in Portland OR . The works also included hull cleaning and coating/repainting with Carnival’s new livery (red-white-blue, introduced on the flagship Mardi Gras ), also works on both stabilizers and the bow thrusters, plus some hotel updates.

During drydock 2020 refurbishment (February 14 - March 4, done in Freeport Bahamas ) were conducted regular maintenance works, repairs, cabin renovations. The USD 40 million drydocking project also included adding to the vessel Carnival's signature Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades - Guy’s Burger (Lido deck), Blue Iguana Cantina (Lido), Carnival WaterWorks (deck 10), Red Frog Rum Bar (deck 3).

Refurbishment 2015

The list of deckplan changes after the ship's “Fun Ship 2.0” drydock 2015 refurbishment (in March) includes:

Live From The Carnival Miracle On Her First Post-Covid Cruise To Alaska

by Prof. Cruise · Published July 28, 2021 · Updated August 3, 2021

Woman sitting at a window on the Carnival Miracle looking out at the water.

Just The Facts, Ma’am

As a first order of business, you should know that the internet is basically non-existent on the Miracle.  I stopped by guest services this morning and was informed that they are working with the satellite company to get it up and running, but they weren’t able to assure me that it would be back up anytime soon (if at all).  Sooooo, for now, when I get a brief few moments of decent connectivity, I’m going to focus my updates on those items that I deem most helpful to future passengers booked on the Miracle this summer.  This is the Joe Friday version: Just the facts ma’am.

But I promise to provide a longer, extremely insightful and hilarious (at least to my own weird little brain) review of the Miracle when I’m back home to better internet.  So with that, I’ll offer a few initial impressions and then I’ll do a daily update where I’ll post the schedule, menus, a few food pics, some information about the weather and ports, and a Q and A (please keep posting questions and I’ll do my best to answer them as quickly as possible).  Also, be sure to follow me on Instagram ( @profcruise ) – I’m having better luck posting quick updates and photos there.

A Few Initial Impressions

Covid precautions.

Except for the crew wearing masks (although compliance isn’t 100%, I regularly see crew with their masks pulled down), once-per-day stateroom cleaning, and no paper menus anywhere, I haven’t noticed any additional health or safety measures due to Covid.   Almost no passengers are wearing masks anywhere on the ship, there are no occupancy limitations to any venues, tables aren’t spaced further apart, and there are no stepped-up, visible sanitizing measures.  And while there are no kids under 12, the ship still feels full.  In other words, this basically feels like a pre-Covid cruise which is equal parts awesome and weird for someone coming from a city with widespread masking and other mitigation measures.

The HUB App

For now, the HUB app seems to have made onboard life much more difficult for many passengers and certainly for the crew who must patiently work with said passengers who range from simply confused to overwhelmed to downright hostile at times.  The app, in theory, is awesome.  But on a ship with a generally less-than-tech-savvy demographic and without back-up methods if the app doesn’t work due to technical or user error.

There are also some things that could have easily been built into the app for it to be more functional.  Just to give one example, there is no way to request either a “private” or “shared” table in the dining room.  So when you check-in on the app, you get assigned a table, usually private, but no one really seems to know exactly how seats are assigned.  If you aren’t happy with your dining configuration and request a change, there is no easy way for crew to do that without messing up the whole system and holding up the (long at times) line of people waiting to be seated.  Why not just offer the option of “shared” or “private” during the check-in process?

Pro Tip: If you DO want a shared table, pick a set dining time (either early or late) and stop by to talk to the maître d’ on the first day to request a shared table for the duration of the cruise.

It’s also all but impossible to just show up without your phone and get seated.  The woman I dined with for brunch today had suffered a stroke and couldn’t use a phone with her limited mobility.  It took them 20 minutes to finally get her a table (I finally just suggested they seat her with me since I was alone, but even that was complicated).  She also had no way to view the menu (no hard copy menus were available – I pulled it up on my phone for her, but without me she would have been out-of-luck).

So far the service has been good (for cruise service).  The crew is friendly and efficient.  There are some training gaps though (particularly regarding the app…but that’s to be expected with something totally new and that hasn’t been tested under real-world conditions onboard).

I’ve been sticking with the things I know I like (especially Indian and burritos from Blue Iguana Cantina), but so far the food has been delicious and plentiful (except for the buffet which seems pretty skimpy to me, especially at dinner).  Which brings me to my first reader question:

Q : Are there limits to how much you can order in the MDR?

A : No.  At least that has been my observation and experience so far.  I’ve ordered multiple entrees and desserts and have seen others do the same.  My waiter always asks if I’d like anything else (even after I’ve ordered enough to feed a high school football team) and I saw plates piled high with lobster tails in the MDR tonight.

And here’s another reader question related to food:

Q : How does the buffet function?  Is it still self-serve or do crew members serve the food?

A : There are no changes to how items are served on the buffet.  Except for bacon (no one has defunded the bacon police yet) and the carving area, guests can serve themselves.

So, let’s move on to Day 1 (remember to go here to read all about embarkation, the new muster drill, and sail away ).

Day 1: Seattle

The weather in Seattle on embarkation day was downright hot! Now let me provide a bit of context for that comment. I live in Seattle where the average summer day is 75 degrees and sunny. In other words, perfect. I’m one of the only humans ever who moved to Seattle to a) cruise and b) for the weather. So anything above 80 degrees is almost unbearable to me. It was at least 80 degrees on the outside decks during sail away. There were people sunning themselves in swimsuits as those of us in long sleeves and full length pants were eyeing them with envy!

But also note that as I’m currently typing this (on day 3 as we approach the Tracy Arm Fjord), it’s windy and FREEZING. Now again, I live in Seattle where winter lows average in the mid 40’s. And I’d consider this current weather on deck comparable to Seattle in the winter. I’m wearing a giant puffer coat, two pairs of pants, a hat, and gloves. And I’m still chilly.

Today’s Schedule

RIP FUNTimes. First a quick note about the daily schedule. Carnival is no longer providing the daily FUNTimes schedule/newsletter to staterooms. Instead, the schedule is posted to the new HUB app each day. However, there is a simple paper copy of the schedule that you can pick up at Guest Services each day. Here it is for day one:

Let me take a minute to answer a few more reader questions while I wait for the menus and food pics to upload (if they aren’t there yet it’s because my connection is bad – keep checking back):

Q : Is the dining room open for lunch on embarkation day?

A : No. The following areas are open for lunch on embarkation day: buffet, Blue Iguana Cantina, Guy’s Burgers, deli, and Pizza Pirate.

Q : Is Dr. Pepper available onboard?

A : No. I saw quite a few fellow Dr. Pepper fans carrying on 12 packs.

Q : My flight out of Seattle on debarkation day was changed to 10:45am, can I make it?

A : I’ve had a bunch of people ask me this (I guess you’re all on the same flight). While that’s cutting it very, very close, you may still be able to make it if you do the following:

-Use the Port Valet service (free) to have your bags sent directly from the cruise ship to board your airplane. This will save you having to stand in line to check your bags at SEATAC.

-Check in for your flight and print (or have ready on your phone) your boarding pass.

-Choose “self assist” for your debarkation time. This will get you off the ship as early as possible (I’ll report back on debarkation day with the exact time this starts, so you’ll know).

-Take a taxi to the airport. Taxis will be parked directly outside the terminal in Seattle. This will be your fastest option to the airport.

-Utilize TSA Pre-check if you already have it to get you through security faster (or apply for it if there’s still enough time).

Day 2: Fun Day At Sea

Today was chilly and foggy with periodic drizzle. Most people spent the entire day inside (except for me, I’m out walking the deck and stalking wildlife, rain or shine, cold or hot, 50 foot swells or smooth like butter, and so on).

Day 3: Tracy Arm Fjord

The weather started out extremely cold and windy at 8am. It continued to get warmer throughout the day and was gorgeous out on deck by 1pm (when we started entering Tracy Arm Fjord). Blue skies and sun all day. We lucked out with perfect conditions. We didn’t make it super close to the Sawyer glaciers due to ice, but we still saw them from a distance.

Tips for Tracy Arm Fjord

-Don’t forget to set your clock back one hour the evening of Day 2.

-If you want a prime spot, get there very early (I secured my clamshell on deck 10 at 8am and didn’t budge except to pee and run down to the Lido for food.

-Start out on the starboard (right) side of the ship. You’ll get the sun early in the morning which will keep you warmer and you’ll get the best view as you’re entering into the fjord.

-Dress in layers and bring out some towels or blankets to cover up with. It will start out cold and may end up very warm (if you get lucky with sun).

-Listen to an audiobook. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be out on deck for most of the day. I enjoyed listening to an audiobook while looking at the scenery.

-Watch for the pilot boat starboard side aft at 9:50am. A small pilot boat will transfer 3 south Alaska pilots onto the ship to help the captain navigate the fjord. It’s really cool to watch them pull up to the ship and hop on.

-At around 1:45 you can also watch for two tour boats to approach the ship to whisk away those who purchased the Tracy Arm Fjord excursion. Again, it’s cool to watch it pull up and load on passengers.

-Don’t forget to bring out your binoculars and camera! Also grab some sunscreen and sunglasses. Glare from the water is strong.

-Watch for whale spouts. You’ll see lots of humpbacks all through the day if you keep an eye out for spouts. Some got very close to the ship where you could see their backs.

-You can listen to the naturalist on outside decks until entering into the fjord, then due to environmental regulations no outside announcements are allowed. However you can still listen from inside the ship and on channel 33 in your cabin.

-The naturalist will be walking around on deck 9 once you enter the fjord if you want to ask her questions.

-The Captain will get as close as he can to the Sawyer Glacier, but exactly how close he gets will depend on ice conditions. You’ll get a good look at it though (regardless of where you’re watching from) unless there’s bad fog.

-You’ll sail out of the fjord the same way you sailed in, so if you stay on the same side of the ship, you can see both sides of the fjord. They are both spectacular! Try to catch them both if you can.

Here’s a reader question about the Tracy Arm Fjord excursion:

Q : Are masks required on the Tracy Arm Fjord excursion?

A : Yes, you will be required to wear a mask as you exit the ship and board the smaller vessel. One will be provided if you forget. Once you get onto the boat to an outdoor deck, you can remove it. Tour operators will be wearing masks at all times.

The temperature was in the low 70’s with mostly overcast skies, but no rain.

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Q: Are masks required in Skagway?

A: Masks are required as you disembark and embark the ship, on excursions (unless outside), and in some shops and restaurants. If you are taking the train, masks will be required at all times.

Q: Are the shops open in Skagway?

A: Yes, roughly 90% of shops and restaurants were open.

Q: Are there tours available to purchase once I get off the ship in Skagway?

A: Yes, there is a booth near where the ship docks with a number of different tours you can book same-day.

Day 5: Juneau

carnival cruise miracle alaska

The weather in Juneau today is perfection. 70’s and sunny.

Reader Questions About Juneau

Q: Are masks required in Juneau?

A: Yes, masking is required in ALL indoor areas of Juneau and outside if you can’t maintain 6 feet of distance.

Q: Are shops and restaurants open?

A: Yes, nearly everything is open!

Q: Are tours available to purchase near the dock?

A: Yes. If you haven’t booked anything for Juneau yet, there will be tour operators near where the ship docks (just keep walking along until you see them). There are whale watching tours, glacier tours, etc.

Reader Questions

Let me take a minute to answer a few common reader questions about the ship. There appears to be great interest in this first one:

Q: Is there a Seafood Shack onboard the Carnival Miracle?

A: Yes! But’s it’s called the “Seafood Corner” and it’s located in the buffet area of the Lido deck. Here’s the menu and a few pics (I had to reduce the size of these menus to get them to load. If you have trouble seeing them, head over to Instagram where I think you can see them more clearly. I’m @profcruise):

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Q: Do the performers wear masks?

A: No, none of the performers (musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, etc) wear masks while they are performing.

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Day 6: Ketchikan

carnival cruise miracle alaska

The temperature in Ketchikan is in the upper 60’s. Skies are mostly cloudy and there’s a bit of fog. But guess what? NO RAIN! I’ve been to Ketchikan many times and always count myself very lucky if it doesn’t rain (it often has). I better hit the casino tonight!

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Q: What’s the mask situation in Ketchikan?

A: Masking is not widespread in Ketchikan. Some shops required them, bit most did not. Most residents and employees were not wearing masks. You’ll still need to wear them inside on Carnival excursions though.

Q: How many other ships have been docked at each port?

A: We had Skagway and Juneau all to ourselves, but are joined in Ketchikan today by the Celebrity Millennium (one of my all-time favorite ships).

Q: Are shops and restaurants open in Ketchikan?

A: Yes, nearly everything is open (even on a Sunday).

Q: Are tours available to purchase in Ketchikan?

A: Yes, several tour operators were selling tours as you exit the ship.

Q: Are the salmon still spawning in Ketchikan?

A: A few, yes, but we’re really at the tail end of the season.

Deli On The Miracle

I decided to eat at the deli for lunch today, so I thought I’d share the menu and a few pics. I ordered the falafel wrap and the tomato and mozzarella sandwich. Both were delicious and the fries were perfectly crispy. Of course I had to try a salted chocolate cookie too!

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Tonight’s Dinner Menu (Day 6)

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Food Porn (Day 6)

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Let me take a few more reader questions before I head out to this evening’s production show.

Q: Will I still receive a towel animal if I elect to have my stateroom serviced in the morning?

A: Yes! I have received a towel animal every morning. I feel like they’ve been extra cute this time too. I know I’m a grown-ass adult, but I still love them.

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Q: What do people wear for formal night in the MDR?

A: Every Alaska cruise I’ve been on, on every line, has been very casual and this one is no exception. Formal night attire has ranged from a few (very few) gowns and suits to (mostly) dress pants and a dressy shirt for women and a polo or button down shirt and slacks for men. Some ties, but not many. On non-formal nights, pretty much anything goes! I showed up in my robe with a luggage strap belt and no one batted an eye!

As I’m heading into my final sea day (boo, hiss, cry) I wanted to provide a few updates to items I discussed early on. First, the internet was restored by the time I returned to the ship in the afternoon in Juneau. It has been slow, but otherwise working fine since.

Second, paper menus are now available and being handed out to anyone who asks for them.

And finally, there seems to be a good deal of confusion around my discussion of the HUB app as it relates to “Your Time Dining” (sorry about that!), so I wanted to clear that up. Prior to the app, when you approached the podium to check in for “Your Time Dining” you could do a number of things. You could request a certain kind of table (booth, by the window, etc). You could request to be seated in a certain section with a certain wait staff. And you could request to dine privately (meaning your party would not share a table with any strangers) or you could request a “shared” table, meaning your party would sit at a table with strangers. Some cruisers (especially those sailing solo) like to meet people over dinner and prefer to dine at a table with others not in their party. With the new HUB app, there is no way to make any of the above requests. Instead, you will be assigned a table as they become available, with no input about location, wait staff, and no ability to request a “shared” table if you want one.

I did ask one night if I could be seated at a “shared” table and was told “if anyone else requests one, we will seat them with you.” No one ever came. I can’t complain through. I live with an 8 year-old at home, so 7 nights of peace and quiet at a lovely table by myself with no one complaining about what I cooked or throwing stuff at the dog was a rare gift. But again, if you know you want a shared table, opt for a set dining time and be sure to stop by the dining room on the afternoon of embarkation to make that request.

Cabin Tour And Tip

I’ll be providing a detailed review of my stateroom later, but for now here’s a quick tour followed by my top tip.

This cabin has functioned pretty well for me with one exception: there is only a single lonely electrical outlet. This has made keeping my devices charged a challenge. Which brings me to my room tip. Actually tips. If you still have time before you sail, I strongly suggest ordering one of these:

carnival cruise miracle alaska

This is especially designed and approved for cruising (if you have something already, make sure it does NOT have a surge protector or it will be confiscated). You can pick one up on Amazon here .

Second tip? Remember to actually PACK it (do as I say, not as I did!).

Day 7 (Fun Day At Sea)

The weather has been gorgeous today, sunny and in the 70’s. I spent all day outside in my two favorite spots, walking on deck 3 and relaxing in a clamshell on deck 10. Perfect day at sea!

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Food Porn: Sea Day Brunch (Day 7)

I won’t re-post the menu since it’s the same as the one on day 2 (so scroll back up if you want to look at it again). Today I ordered the fettuccine and the skillet cake. The fettuccine was tasty, but the skillet cake was one of the best things I’ve had so far. I liked it better than the 24 hour french toast (which was still good, but a bit soggy in the middle). I also ordered the chia seed pudding (which I loved from day 2), but it wasn’t ready yet. I might have to go back for lunch to get one (it’s excellent!). Anyway, here are some photos of what I ordered today:

VIFP Benefits (New Procedures)

I want to take a minute to talk about the VIFP benefits, as this is a significant area of change from prior Carnival cruises and has been a major source of confusion for both crew and passengers. So let’s get it cleared up for you before you sail!

As per the new procedures, NO VIFP reward items will be delivered to cabins. Your water won’t be there, your pin won’t be there, and your drink coupons won’t be there.

Despite what John Heald promised, there was no information in my cabin (via any QR code or hard copy literature) about how I should redeem my benefits and the benefits were NOT visible to me anywhere on my account. As far as I could tell, they had vanished, never to be seen or heard from again (like my waistline somewhere on day 2).

So, I stopped by guest services to inquire, spoke to some friends of mine on this cruise who are Platinum (so I could get a sense of their experience), and visited each collection point to gather my items (except for my free drink, which I’m told will be redeemable at any bar after 5pm tonight…I’ll report back).

First, I visited the atrium bar (next to Guest Services on Deck 2) to get my water. I double checked with the bartender to make sure everything was legit and that there would be no charge. Sure enough, she handed me a giant bottle of water and I signed a receipt showing a zero balance.

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Next, I headed up to the Pixel’s desk on deck 3 to collect my Gold level pin. The crew member scanned my card, handed me my pin, and wrote something down on a piece of paper. Here’s the pin for Gold status members:

carnival cruise miracle alaska

Now, as for my Platinum friends, they had a hell of a time getting their free drink at the Sea Day Brunch. Their waiter had no idea what they were talking about when they asked. Then when they explained that it was their free Sea Day Brunch drink for being Platinum, he kept asking for their coupon. Finally, one of them went back up to their room to get a printout they had received from guest services with instructions for how to receive their benefits. That finally did the trick! But then they found out that one of the drinks they’d ordered wasn’t covered (the fresh juice for $5 on the brunch menu), so they had to order something else. It eventually got sorted, but clearly there is still a lot of confusion among both passengers and crew. Hopefully, it will be better on future sailings. As with all change, patience and persistence are key!

Q: Is there live music onboard and is the piano bar open.

A: Yes and yes! I don’t know why the music isn’t listed on the schedule, but there has been wonderful live music all throughout the cruise! See my prior post here for a graphic with all the musicians onboard (just scroll down until you see it).

Q: Are the pools heated and are people using them?

A: Yes and yes! I saw a few people using the pools in Seattle and they were getting some major love today with the nice weather we’re having. The hot tubs are also an awesome spot for cold days. Definitely pack those suits and trunks!

Q: Is there a naturalist onboard and what does she do?

A: I’ll confess, no one asked this. But it was one of my questions pre-cruise, so I thought I’d answer it, in case any other nerds are booked and curious. And YES, there is a naturalist onboard. Her name is Nancy Caruso and she’s a marine biologist. She gave multiple lectures during the cruise about Alaska and wildlife. She was also available to answer questions and gave commentary as we approached Tracy Arm Fjord. I highly recommend attending everything she offers – it will enrich your experience so much!

I have time for one last question, and it’s a good one:

Q: Where do the service dogs sailing with their humans do their, um, business?

carnival cruise miracle alaska

There was a woman out on deck trying to convince her drunk husband to zip back up his pants because, “while you’re definitely an animal in the sack honey, this area is meant only for dogs.” Okay, that didn’t happen. But it could have – this is Carnival after all (I kid, I kid).

Final Cruise Night Rituals

I have two rituals to close out every cruise. First, I put in some headphones and play Hallelujah (the Jeff Buckley version) while watching the sunset from the promenade deck.

carnival cruise miracle alaska

And second, I order a martini and listen to some live music (I had no trouble cashing in my free Gold status drink – I just mentioned it at the Alchemy Bar and they took care of it for me).

carnival cruise miracle alaska

And with that, CHEERS! I hope your cruise on the Miracle or to Alaska will be as magical as mine was!

We are so excited to be sailing on the Miracle on 8/31. I’m glad someone went before us to work out all the bugs! I hope the rest of your cruise goes more smoothly! Thanks for the updates!

' src=

Seafood Shack? On the Miracle? I noticed it on the sheet so I had to ask.

' src=

Yes! I’ll be adding info to the blog shortly!

Thank you so much!

My pleasure! Thanks for reading along!

' src=

Like Ann I also thank you for letting us know about this first Miracle cruise back to our favorite place Alaska. Wife and I will be going Aug 17th. Thanks for being a “crash test dummy”! 😀

LOL @ crash test dummy. I love it! Happy to help!

' src=

👍🏼🤣 Crash test dummy . Prof. Cruise Thanks. I’m on the Miracle 9/14 to Alaska.

' src=

Do you know if the Port Valet service will take our bags if we don’t fly out until 5:30am the next morning or maybe will take across the street from the airport to the Hilton? Also take you so much for all the information provide. We are sailing on 8-31 and are so excited!

Port Valet will only take your bags if you’re flying out that same day. You’ll have to take your bags with you to the hotel. Have an awesome cruise!!!

' src=

Lisa, there are several places that will store your luggage downtown, for a very reasonable price. Just do a google on “Luggage storage Seattle.” I originally was flying out the next day and that was my plan. My flight plans changed though and leaving late afternoon the day we get back. I think I might have answered you on our roll call…I’m also on the 8/31 sailing. Our group are apparently Prof’s “biggest fans”

' src=

Love the review so far!

Thank you for reading along!

' src=

Thank you, thank you, thank you. The detail you have provided is amazing and so helpful. I’ve cruised the Caribbean 14 times and have been struggling to pack for my 8/10 miracle trip. You have brought some clarity and I think I can finally focus.

' src=

Thank you so much for the blogs. I am really enjoying. We are headed on this cruise in 10 days. On the ship, is the temperature comfortable? Trying to figure out clothing.

With the exception of the first day when some of the cabins were VERY HOT, the temperatures on the ship have been good. A bit chilly in the evening in certain spots, so pack a sweater or light jacket.

You have been an amazing source of info! Thank you thank you for sharing your experience. Somehow the Alaskan cruises on the Miracle have been Carnival’s lonely little stepchildren and they aren’t even really saying much about them. I guess we don’t stack up to the Mardi. That’s okay, they can keep their giant ship going to hot places. I’m headed to ALASKA! Your news about the Seafood Corner made my day. Now I have to convince my silly son who hates seafood that we’d be better off eating there. I’m no longer solo, decided to spring for a broke travel companion who is really fun and totes my luggage. He’s sure lucky I’m his mom. He did help me move this weekend, so I guess he kinda deserves it. He’s a pretty good kid 🙂

I’m so excited that you’ll be going with your son! I hope you two have a wonderful time together. I’m taking my mom to Alaska with me in September. I love cruising with her! Your comments about the Mardi Gras made me laugh. I personally love the older, smaller Carnival ships. And yes, ALASKA!

He and I have been on some adventures ..he’s my favorite travel buddy 🙂 And 100% with you on the big ships. I’ve never had a *bad* cruise, but my least favorite has been on the Vista, the biggest ship I’ve been on. Nope, I like the little ships.

I hope I’ll still be able to travel with my son when he’s all grown up! You’re both lucky!

' src=

Do they close the Sky Dome over the main pool to keep one area warm for swimming, or is it open during the days?

I haven’t spent a ton of time near the main pool (so they may have and I just didn’t notice), but all the times I’ve been out there, the dome has been open. We haven’t had any rain, so I suspect they’ve kept it open. I haven’t seen anyone swimming except on the first day when it was hot in Seattle. Hot tubs are getting good use though!

' src=

Hi! Have you had a chance to check out the spa on the miracle? sailing on 8/17. First time in Alaska and on the Miracle and your blog has been so helpful. thank you so much for all you do!

You’re welcome! Thanks so much for following along! I’ve walked through (so I can verify that it’s open and that everything is functioning as usual), but I don’t use the spa, so I can’t speak to any details.

' src=

Is the casino open? Did not see it listed in Carnival Capers (old school).

Yes! The casino is open and hopping!

' src=

Thanks for all the info Looking forward to my turn on August 10 !!!!

Woohoo!!! So excited for you. Have an amazing cruise!

' src=

Do they have plans to add any live music or the piano bar in future sailings?

They have tons of live music and the piano bar has been active too. Not sure why they don’t include it on the schedule. But it’s happening!

Thanks so much.

' src=

I need to know the real time that we can run off ship with our luggage

All our debarkation information says 8am, but I’ll verify tomorrow and will be writing a whole live debarkation post, so be sure to check back. I know a lot of people have very early flights from Seattle and are nervous!

' src=

Your review has been wonderful as always. Thanks so much for keeping us updated! When are you headed back to sea again? I bet H is jealous and wants to come next time.

Thanks so much for following along and for your kind words! I’ll be heading back to Alaska with my mom in September on the Encore and H will (hopefully, assuming kids can get vaxxed by then) be coming along on a 10-day Christmas cruise to Mexico!

' src=

Are there any theme parties? If so which nights and what were they? We haven’t been on Carnival in over 10 years but we are booked on Miracle Alaska Sept 7th, thanks, LOVE your posts!

Yes, there was an 80’s rock and glow party on night 5 (Juneau)!

' src=

Thanks as I was wondering the same thing. Hopefully theme stays the same through summer or I’ll have packed a costume for nothing.

Thanks for blogging your experience. Sounds like there were very few hiccups with this first voyage! Looking forward to smooth sailing on 8/31.

I really appreciate you blogging your experience. Sounds like there were very few hiccups with this first voyage! Looking forward to smooth sailing on 8/31.

I dunno, I think an 80’s glow costume would make quite a statement on formal night. LOL. Have an amazing cruise. I’m so excited for everyone booked on the Miracle over the next few months!

' src=

Prof, I really, really, really enjoyed your review! Your writing style speaks to your audience, and I love your twisted sense of humor! Your writing is clear and concise. Very well worded! I’m in Texas , and found your website through a sympathetic Cruise Critic member. If I’m every up in your parts of the world, I wanna go on the cruise you just reviewed. Thanks so much! Joe

Thank you so much for the kind words – you made my night! I’m always heartened to know that others out in the world share my weird sense of humor. LOL! Maybe we’ll find ourselves on a cruise together at some point and we can crack each other up at the bar. Happy cruising!

' src=

I was on this cruise as well. I felt the food in the main dining room was well below average. Entrees where cold and bland. The coffee was horrible which is why everyone gets the specialty coffee. Loved going to Alaska but overall Carnival needs to step up with the food in the main dining room. Sorry to disagree with you on that. Everyone I talked to said it was bad. Thank the Lord the pizza and burger joint was good. Cutting corners is Carnival middle name.

I so appreciate you chiming in with your opinion – I know a lot of people agree with you on the food and coffee. Glad you enjoyed Pizza Pirate and Guy’s. And Alaska was amazing – we got so lucky with the weather!

' src=

Great reading your comments. I was also on this first cruise and here are my comments. We ate in the MDR (late seating) each evening. Dinners were good but not like I remember from previous cruises. The quality seemed to improve as days went on but mostly our meals were barely warm. I go on a cruise to “disconnect” so having to carry and use my phone to navigate meals/events was an annoyance. Many of the staff were new and going through a learning curve. I wish deck chairs were available outside on Deck3. The weather was amazing and I prefer the quiet that’s not available on the pool decks. The ship was clean but I didn’t notice any extra covid protocols in elevators, stairways, or sitting areas. The casino was consistently busy and sometimes difficult to get a seat. This is good/bad depending on your view. Lol. All in all, our balcony room was comfortable, staff were fun/efficient/trying, comedians were entertaining, and the weather amazing.

Thanks so much for your review, Carolyn! It’s always fun to hear the perspective of someone else on the same sailing. I SOOO agree with you about deck chairs on deck 3. That’s always been my spot on other ships and this was one of the only ships I’ve ever been on not to have them. We sure did luck out with the weather though! Thanks again for taking the time to post your thoughts!

We were on the same cruise! Your review is pretty spot on. I’m sure most of the little inconveniences that we experienced were due to being out of service for so long & new employees. However, I wanted to share my thoughts on a couple things that really tried to ruin my good time….. 1. Straws! I was not aware that they only have candy straws, which are horrible. If you like straws, or frozen drinks, you will need to bring your own straws, or a reusable one.

2. I totally agree with the previously mentioned lack of paper menus & Fun Times. Not everyone wants to carry a phone around all day while trying to relax & disconnect from the hussle and bussle of daily life.

I get the straw thing, I guess, but hopefully the menus, Fun Times and normal brunch routine is brought back.

Thanks so much for chiming in!!!

Yes on the straws! Thankfully I knew about this in advance, so I brought my own metal straws. Thanks for bringing it up so others can plan ahead and do the same.

It will be interesting to see if the paper menus and Fun Times come back. If I had to bet on it, I’d say they won’t be back. It’s a significant cost savings to Carnival not to have to print them all. I bet they’re gone for good. But, we’ll see!

Very good comments on the cruise. Thank you for taking the time. Some helpful pointers.

Great article. My wife and I were on the same cruise with you, we loved it. It was our first cruise to Alaska (our 32nd Carnival cruise). Will you be with us on Panorama’s first cruise back on August 21st out of Long Beach? If so we would like to say hi to you.

Hi Larry! I wish we’d been able to catch up on the Miracle. 32 cruises on Carnival? That’s very impressive! I’ve got some catching up to do! Sadly I won’t be on the Panorama. My next Carnival cruise is the Journey’s cruise on the Freedom through the Panama Canal in April. I’m so excited for you though (and jealous too, of course). Have a wonderful time!

P.S. To Platinum and Diamond cruisers: Go to the casino cashier and get your $25 cash, as they will not be having the Blackjack tournaments (for as long as that lasts due to covid) in which an extra buy-in is part of the platinum and diamond package. Also, on the same note, for all you Carnival cruisers, on seaday go to the casino cashier and get your one free play to those crane games. (Those $1 games where you try to grab the bundles of cash.) We have seen people walking around proudly with their big plastic wrapped bundle of cash under their arm!

Excellent tips! Thanks so much for sharing! I’m hoping some of my cruise friends walk away with one of those bundles of cash!

Thank you we’re leaving the 24th to Alaska !! We can’t wait !

Yay! So excited for you! Have an amazing trip!

Thank you for the Miracle review. I have never read a more informative and concise (and entertaining) review in 33 cruises. This will be Alaska cruise #5, first on a Carnival ship. We will be following you and look forward to hearing about other cruises you have taken or are taking.

Thank you so much for your kind words. You’ll have to let me know what you think of Carnival compared to the other lines you’ve sailed on to Alaska. I hope you have an amazing time!

Miracle Alaska Cruise 2024

Cool Cruiser

Stowaway LFC

Hey y'all!  This is the MOST excellent site I have found for cruise information!  I have loved reading all the reviews and seeing all the pictures. I will shamelessly admit I have been stalking this forum for weeks after pulling the trigger on an Alaskan cruise in 2024. (Far out I know but hey my paycheck only goes so far gotta plan these things)

I have cruised Carnival in the past, took a Mexico cruise on the Celebration back in the 90's and a short Bahamas one back in 2009 on the Sensation.  Would have loved to gone on more but was raising kiddos and that ain't cheap!  So now I feel like a newbie cruiser again! And a little miffed I can't claim the 90's cruise for points, gggrrrrr....... but it's ok, I can pay my dues and be one of the last to board the ship, you Platinum & Diamonds are welcome to wave at me and snicker from the boat while I suffer lol. More room for me in the laundry room anyways.

So the cruise I picked is a 10 day Alaskan cruise out of San Franscisco on Miracle.

Flying out of Love field in Dallas (in case you couldn't tell already I am a Texan lol) the day before to SFO, plan to get transport to the Fisherman's wharf area and stay at the RUI Plaza. Plan to uber to the cruise terminal the next am.

Port stops are Juneau, Haines, Tracy Arm, Ketchikan and Prince Rubert.

Have a semi plan on excursions but can't book those this far out.  But I definitely plan to book them beforehand. And Cheers of course!  Prob not internet though. Would rather do review stuff after I get home.  And it looks like most of the ports have AT&T service, at least I hope!

BTW the tip on the AARP Carnival gift cards is gold!

Don't plan to do a whole lot in San Franscisco except explore the pier area, eat and then crash because every time I fly my luggage begs the staff to be looked at in detail and then I am invariably seated next to extroverts who wanna be best friends for life.  It's stressful being an introvert!

So here is my first of many questions I am sure I will have..... I am well versed in the search feature but failed to find what I was looking for.

I originally booked an interior cabin but then I saw on here all the perks of having a balcony because of the weather and temperature.

Which section of the cabins should I look into with views in mind?  Need the lowest price on a balcony cabin I can find but don't wanna stare at a life boat the whole trip lol. If it's too expensive I'll pass but I'd like to check into it.

I'm sure I'll have many more questions along the way.  Thank you for reading!  Any and all recommendations and advice are welcome!

Consider booking an ocean view. Still have all the scenery at a more reasonable price.

When I have taken Alaska cruises, I choose to hang out on the top deck during the most scenic parts of the cruise. that way I could have my choice of all 360 degrees of views as opposed to only the view from a balcony.

As a fellow introvert, Invest in a good eye mask and book a window seat. Seems to discourage conversation.   On the vast majority of my flights, I say two words "thank you" to the flight attendants.

Well unless a magic cruise fairy pops up and sprinkles magic I'm keeping my interior cabin. Wow, the price jump is insane! Think I'll take Stacey's advice and just go to the top for views.  More money left for fun stuff.

I was going to say the same thing.  We have done Alaska a few times, and there is so much to see on both sides of the ship, I prefer to be up on one of the top decks going back and forth to each side.  Or sometimes you can get a good view from one of the back decks.  When I choose our cabin, I always base it on the price difference between the various options.  For us, it was always practically double the price to get a balcony for Alaska, and I just didn't feel like it was worth that much more.

Miracle is a great ship (after you get past her gaudy décor).  🙂   There is a lot of common space that doesn't feel too crowded (both inside and out).  It has a retractable roof over one of the pools if you have bad weather.

We sailed Miracle out of SFO not too long - and we also stayed at RUI.  I loved it - great location.  We walked down to the pier the afternoon we arrived and it was so easy, we decided we'd just walk to the ship the next morning (but I'm sure we had less luggage than you will have for a 10-day).  🙂  I had heard not such good things about the area, but I thought it was fine (I felt safe enough to go for a run by myself down to the warf area and back the morning before debarkation).

Bring binoculars and have a great trip!

Awesome advice!  Thank you! Going to try to par down to 1 suitcase and a backpack and do laundry mid cruise. LOL! Talk about gaudy! When I started investigating the Miracle I thought whoever designed it was on a bad LSD trip or something.  It's like some Alice in Wonderland took LSD or something.  But its the destinations that matter. Sooooo looking forward to this trip!

And you absolutely can claim that 90s cruise on Celebration.  If you know the particulars, they'll be able to find you in the system and credit it to your existing VIFP.  Even some pics submitted to them will be sufficient evidence. Just give 'em a call.

BTW, I'm stoked about your fantastic attitude. You'll have a great time.  Remember.... layers.  And no matchy, matchy 'winter' coats for you and your SO.  We northerners spot 'em from a mile away and chuckle under our breath.  👍

You need solid rain gear which can double as wind protection.  Book the small boat Tracey Arm  excursion (under San Fran excursions) as soon as possible, you will get up close and personal with ice bergs and bring full warm/rain gear.  Book the small boat for whale watching with  https://www.harvandmarvs-juneau-whale-watching.com/  .

Wowza!!! I did not know that!  The 90's cruise was a 7 day one too! Thank you!  You are my happy place today! I recently found the original Celebration has been scrapped.  Sad news.  Nostalgia hurts sometimes....But carry on! New adventures to be had and new memories to make!

OMG!  I saw this one on a review! I so want to do that!  How far out can you book an excursion?  I want to be 1st in line for that one!

If you can provide evidence of earlier cruises, Carnival will give you credit. Did you buy any photos on the earlier cruises?

There are many whale watching excursions. I've been on a few including Harv and Marvs. Next time we are trying

Nice timing for me, next cruise in 52 days is 10 day Miracle to Alaska. It will be my first trip to Alaska and traveling with a friend that has helped prepare, she went last year and fell in love. We are flying in early morning, staying at the RUI, touring San Francisco in the afternoon and having supper out. Several others on the cruise next year with us are also at the RUI and will be taking the .7 mile walk to the ship from the hotel.

Booked Harv and Marv’s small boat in Juneau, glad to see nice marks for them.

It doesn't even have to be photos that you bought from Carnival.  I was able to add a 7-day cruise from1982 on the Carnivale from Miami to Samana, San Juan and St Thomas.  I had some old photos that I took.  One of them showed my wife in the dining room.  They had balloons and banners promoting the debut of Tropical coming soon.   They were able to get a pretty good idea of the date from those photos, so they gave me credit for that cruise.

It really isn't that cold. I was on an Antarctica cruise a couple of months ago and spent a lot of time on my balcony. It was warmer and less crowded than up on deck.

Unless I missed it you didn't say what month you were going @Stowaway LFC .  We've done Alaska both in late May/early June and late August/early September, both considered shoulder season. I'd have to think long and hard about which I liked better but would absolutely do the Spring/Fall thing again.  We were lucky to have solid weather for both trips. That doesn't always happen.  The issue is more rain than cold but the Lido deck can and will be chilly at times. It ain't the Caribbean.

You're also going to want to think about mosquito season when you are ashore. Up there they can carry away dogs and small children!  Our two trips were before and then after so we were fine.

San Francisco

With breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and a spectacular bay, San Francisco is one of the U.S.'s most beautiful cities. Visitors have a wide range of things to see, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Nob Hill, Alcatraz, and Chinatown. A cruise vacation to Alaska is a profound adventure. The spectacular natural beauty, rugged wilderness, massive glaciers and endless opportunities for wildlife viewing make a trip to the 49th state a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers. As an added bonus, cruise ships can reach remote parts of the state, including Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: one of the most significant (and picturesque) marine and wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

With the ever-growing popularity of the destination and an extended cruising season (some lines now travel to Alaska between April and October), more ships are heading north to the shores of The Great Land. With these expanded itineraries, there's more than ever to think about when booking your Alaska cruise.

To assist in your decision-making process, U.S. News listed the top cruise lines to consider across five categories, including the best options for families , luxury-seekers and adventurers. U.S. News consulted data provided by Cruiseline.com and the results of our 2024 Best Cruise Lines rankings to help develop this list of the top cruise lines sailing to Alaska.

Best Overall: Holland America Line and Princess Cruises

Holland america line.

Holland America Line's Westerdam in Glacier Bay, Alaska.

Courtesy of Holland America Line

Alaska cruise ships: Eurodam , Koningsdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Westerdam , Zaandam Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Anchorage , Fairbanks and Whittier, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $379 per person for seven-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise on May 1, 2024, or Sept. 22, 2024. Round-trip from Vancouver.

Holland America Line has been cruising Alaska's pristine glacial waters for more than 75 years – longer than any other cruise line. On top of that, the line features more voyages to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than its competitors. Seven-night round-trip sailings depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, while cruisetours – Holland America Line 's sea- and land-based packages – leave from several cities and extend each trip to nine to 18 days.

If this will be your first visit to Alaska, consider booking the comprehensive 14-day Yukon + Denali cruisetour. This Alaska adventure includes a voyage aboard Koningsdam, plus a three-night stay at Holland America's exclusive lodge in Denali National Park, where you'll have the opportunity to see Alaska's big five: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and wolves – and book bucket list activities like flightseeing over Denali. If it's a picture-perfect day, your pilot might even be able to land on the tallest mountain in North America, also known as "The Great One." Other excursions include meeting dog mushers from the Iditarod, landing on the Yanert Glacier, heli-hiking or embarking on a covered wagon adventure on the Alaska tundra. The Yukon Territory portion of this trip is exclusive to Holland America; while there, visit the mining town of Dawson City and learn about Northern Canada's Klondike Gold Rush of August 1896.

Another highlight of sailing Alaska with Holland America is the Alaska Up Close program, which immerses guests in an array of expert-led lectures and excursions on board and shore. When it comes to dining , Holland America is the only cruise line to achieve the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, which means cruisers will enjoy certified sustainable wild Alaska seafood on board (think: Alaskan king crab legs and fresh salmon). You may also have access to culinary excursions in partnership with Food & Wine magazine, as well as special offerings like Alaska salmon bakes.

Cruisers should also consider one of the Holland America's new itineraries for 2024: the 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage aboard Westerdam, round-trip from Seattle. This sailing, which departs on June 9, 2024, features highlights like crossing the Arctic Circle; celebrating the summer solstice in Nome, Alaska; and watching Kodiak bears – the largest bears in the world – on Kodiak Island.

Insider tip: Sample Holland America Line's famous Dutch pea soup while glacier viewing on the outside decks. The crew passes around mugs of the warm soup in this Holland America tradition that gives a nod to the line's heritage – and keeps guests warm on chilly summer days in Alaska.

Princess Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Grand Princess , Sapphire Princess , Royal Princess , Ruby Princess , Majestic Princess , Discovery Princess , Crown Princess Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle; Anchorage, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Francisco ; Fairbanks, Alaska Starting from: $398 per person for seven-night cruise from Anchorage (Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver on May 18, 2024

Princess Cruises has a long history in Alaska, boasting more than 50 years of sailing to the Great Land. Cruise itineraries last between seven and 14 nights, and many visit the Inside Passage. Princess Cruises also owns and operates five wilderness lodges for guests of its cruisetours, plus exclusive "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service to those properties. The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Meanwhile, the Katmai National Park Tour is a nine-day adventure that takes guests to the famed Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve to see bears feasting on wild salmon in Alaska's wilderness.

Insider tip: While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to check out the Princess Treehouse at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," the treehouse offers a different perspective of Denali and features "Sappy Hour" and other fun activities.

Best for Families: Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International

Norwegian cruise line.

Race track atop the Norwegian Bliss in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Spirit Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle ; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $349 per person for seven-night sailing between Seward and Vancouver (itineraries visit Hubbard Glacier and Skagway, or Glacier Bay, Skagway and Juneau). Available on Norwegian Jewel in April, May and June 2024.

Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas at the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Radiance of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Brilliance of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $439 per person for seven-night cruise on Radiance of the Seas, Seward to Vancouver on May 24, 2024

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Insider tip: For more awe-inspiring vistas, take a ride on North Star. Exclusive to Royal Caribbean (on Quantum and Ovation of the Seas), the glass-enclosed capsule rises 300 feet above sea level while suspended over the ocean.

Alaska cruise ships: Celebrity Summit , Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Solstice Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $397 per person for seven-night voyage on Celebrity Summit, Seward to Vancouver on May 17, 2024

Adventure-seeking couples will have many options to choose from during Celebrity Cruises ' 2024 Alaska season. The line's six- and seven-night cruise-only itineraries include up-close views of the Dawes Glacier in the Endicott Arm Fjord and the Hubbard Glacier, the world's longest tidewater glacier at 76 miles long. For an in-depth exploration of Alaska's interior, Celebrity's cruisetours extend the trip to a maximum of 13 nights and feature small-town destinations like Talkeetna, Alaska – the quirky village that inspired the 1990s television show "Northern Exposure." There are also themed tours centered on wildlife viewing and national parks, as well as culinary tours highlighting the flavors of Alaska.

Couples will also find plenty of adult-focused activities and entertainment on board, no matter which vessel they choose. Each ship offers a spa, multiple bars and lounges, and an excellent selection of complimentary and specialty restaurants. Celebrity's three Alaska-bound ships carry between 2,158 guests (Celebrity Summit) and 2,908 passengers (Celebrity Edge). Celebrity Edge, the newest of the ships, offers immersive entertainment and especially beautiful public spaces – like Grand Plaza, a three-story venue at the heart of the vessel.

For extra privacy during your couples' vacation, consider splurging on a suite or villa in The Retreat. This all-inclusive space features luxurious accommodations; a private lounge; a sundeck (unavailable on Celebrity Solstice); and a private restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat. The swanky culinary venue serves dishes curated by renowned French chef Daniel Boulud. In addition, you'll have a team of attendants, butlers and concierges to indulge every whim.

Insider tip: Book your Alaska cruise on Celebrity Edge. The outward-facing design of the ship and expansive outdoor spaces, including the Magic Carpet, offer guests excellent viewing opportunities of Alaska's vast landscapes, calving glaciers and wildlife, including humpback whales in the Inside Passage and around Juneau and Sitka.

Regent seven seas cruises.

Alaska cruise ships: Seven Seas Explorer Departure cities: Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $4,699 per person (all-inclusive) for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on May 1, 2024

Regent's Seven Seas Explorer will spend the 2024 season in Alaska, with the first sailing embarking from Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 1, 2024. The line offers 20 seven-night voyages and two 14-night sailings between May and September. The 746-passenger ship provides an in-depth exploration of Alaska's wilderness, thanks to the vessel's smaller size and all-balcony suites. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Depending on the suite category, guests may also receive a pre- and post-cruise hotel stay with their voyage.

Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. In Ketchikan, sign up for the Tongass Rainforest Expedition, the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show or the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafest. (Note: Some excursions in Ketchikan, such as the Alaska Fishing & Wilderness Dining option, come with an additional fee.) In Juneau, guests can take the complimentary hiking adventure through the Mendenhall Glacier National Recreation Area, home to black bears, mountain goats and other wildlife. Cruisers can also dine on wild Alaska salmon grilled over a fire at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.

Insider tip: Take advantage of the complimentary shore excursions during your cruise. These are tours you'd normally have to pay for on a ship that's not all-inclusive – and that can add up quickly.

Silversea Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Silver Nova , Silver Muse , Silver Shadow Departure cities: Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $3,450 per person for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on Silver Muse on Aug. 1, 2024

Debuted in August 2023, Silversea's latest addition, Silver Nova, is the newest luxury vessel sailing Alaska for the 2024 season. Silver Nova features an asymmetrical design and advanced technologies that make it Silversea Cruises ' most environmentally friendly vessel yet. With just 728 guests, spacious suites (some affording 270-degree views) and outdoor spaces showcasing The Great Land's pristine wilderness, Silver Nova is an excellent luxury option for an Alaska adventure. Silversea offers seven-night itineraries on its three Alaska ships, plus longer voyages on Silver Muse and Silver Shadow.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include pre- and post-cruise hotel stays; complimentary nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; in-room minibars; gourmet dining; all gratuities; at least one excursion per port; butler service in every suite; and other upscale amenities. Complimentary Alaska excursions include a scenic railway tour aboard the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway, the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest in Sitka Sound and more. You can also visit the Iditarod dogs' summer camp in Juneau. For an additional cost, Silversea offers more exclusive experiences, like a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier followed by a dogsledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies in Juneau, or a remote fly-fishing trip in Sitka.

Insider tip: Spend some time on Deck 10; you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the spectacular scenery from the comfort of the heated pool, thanks to the asymmetrical design of the pool deck.

UnCruise Adventures

Alaska cruise ships: Wilderness Discoverer, Wilderness Legacy, Safari Endeavor, Safari Explorer, Safari Quest Departure cities: Ketchikan, Juneau, Whittier, Dutch Harbor and Sitka, Alaska; Seattle Starting from: $3,600 per person for seven-night cruise, Juneau to Ketchikan (or reverse itinerary) on Wilderness Discoverer; various dates between April and September 2024

UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. Expedition teams take guests on kayaking, skiffing, paddleboarding, bushwhacking, waterfall walks and hiking excursions close to the glaciers and visit secluded areas and waterway passages known for optimal wildlife viewing.

Cruise fares include group transfers to and from the ship; all meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; all nonalcoholic beverages; daily activities; wellness amenities; onboard heritage and expedition guides; and access to guest experts. You'll need to disconnect from your devices in remote areas, as there is no Wi-Fi access on UnCruise vessels.

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. This voyage includes birding in the South Marble Islands, where you'll see puffins, cormorants, oystercatchers and other bird species. You can also search for brown bears in Corner Bay, bushwhack in old-growth forests, visit the town of Haines to sample local brews and spirits, and more.

UnCruise has introduced a few new cruises for 2024 with a renewed focus on The Great Land. One of these is the Kids in Nature, Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay cruise. The seven-night, family-focused voyage departs round-trip from Juneau aboard Wilderness Legacy and is available on three dates between June and July. One highlight of the voyage is exploring off-the-grid in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve's "Outback."

A second new option is the seven-night Prince William Sound Explorer with Cordova cruise. This adventure visits dozens of glaciers; the small fishing village of Cordova; the Harriman and College glacial fjords; the islands of Knight and Montague; and multiple places where you can see orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins and other wildlife. The itinerary is offered round-trip from Whittier, Alaska, on Safari Explorer throughout the summer.

Insider tip: Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to hop in a skiff directly off the ship to watch bears along the shore hunt for salmon just 100 feet away. This is an Alaska experience you can only have when sailing on a small ship.
