This was a great way to see so much in San Francisco on our recent trip. Holger was the perfect guide. He is so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the area. We saw parts of the city we never would have seen by ourselves. This tour added so much to our trip. We wholeheartedly recommend Silver Lion!
If you are looking for the best private tour guide in San Francisco, then Holger is your man! Not only does he know everything there is to know about San Francisco and surrounding areas, but he is also completely personable and freakin' hilarious! He truly loves San Francisco and sharing his secrets of the city. He has a gift for reading people and thinking of things that they would or may like to see but do not know to ask about. I was planning a move to the city and looking for apartments and since I did not know anyone in the city or what exactly I wanted to see, I decided to spring for a private tour guide in order to scope out the city and figure out which neighborhood would be the best fit. Holger tailored our tour to suit my needs and took me through each of the neighborhoods one-by-one and sort of explained in detail the merits and pitfalls of each and even why they would or would not be good for my situation in particular. He was even able to answer all of my ridiculous questions with a straight face. For example: is there any part of the city that is particularly vegetarian-friendly? By the end of the tour, we (my brother and I) were more than well-acquainted with the city and able to navigate the truly interesting areas while avoiding the bad ones. Even if you are not planning to move to San Francisco as I was, I highly recommend Holger if you are hoping to stay away from the circulating red double-deckers making their routes and away from the general direction of fisherman's wharf and pier 39. (Or if that's your thing--he can accommodate that too). I also recommend booking your tour for the first day that you will be in the city. Though private tours are more expensive than the canned tours where you are packed in like sardines, if you are able to artfully apply your newfound knowledge of the city, you just might even save money by being able to avoid the overpriced but subpar restaurants and shops packed with tourists by venturing out into the areas less traveled. In short, a day with Holger will completely open your eyes to the city and everything it has to offer, which is, well, everything.
Wow what a great comprehensive tour ... The owner went out of his way with appropriate music playing at the right times, champagne to surprise us, and he knew all the right places to visit. One of the real highlights to our trip to San Francisco. Highly recommended.

Silver Lion Service was founded in August 1979. We started out to operate a small guest house in the Sacramento area. Great house, beautiful garden, inviting swimming pool, Chevy Van for private tours, and a devotion to the best service possible. It was really fun, but Sacramento was too far away.
