The Really Good Celebrity Stories I Usually Only Tell at Happy Hour
From Ross Mathews, the nationally bestselling author of Man Up!, judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and alum of Chelsea Lately, a collection of hilarious and irreverent essays about his experience with Hollywood’s most talked-about celebrities.
Pretend it’s happy hour and you and I are sitting at the bar. I look amazing and, I agree with you, much thinner in person. You look good, too. Maybe it’s the candlelight, maybe it’s the booze. Either way, let’s just go with it. Keep this all between you and me, and do me a favor? Don’t judge me if I name drop just a little.
Tales of My Delusional Self-Confidence
As a young kid growing up in a farm town, Ross Mathews might as well have wished for a pet unicorn or a calorie-free cookie tree to grow in his front yard. Either of those far-fetched fantasies would have been more likely to come true than his real dream: Workin in television in Hollywood, California. Seriously that stuff just doesn't happen to people like Ross. But Guess what. It totally did
Now, with his first book, Ross takes us inside his journey as a super-fan, revealing the most embarrassing and hilarious moments of his small-town life and big-city adventures. From learning to swear like a hardened trucker to that time in high school when had to face down the most frightening opponent of all (his girlfriend's lady bits), Ross holds nothing back.

What Happened To Jonelle Matthews, the 12-Year-Old Missing for 35 Years Before Her Remains Were Found?
The case of the missing Greeley, Colorado girl went unsolved for more than three decades until construction workers made a grisly discovery.
The case of a missing Colorado girl went unsolved for more than three decades until construction workers made a grisly discovery.
How to Watch
Watch The Girl on the Milk Carton on Oxygen Sunday, August 25 at 7/6c and next day on Peacock.
Jonelle Matthews ’ head-scratching 1984 disappearance, just five days before Christmas, both captivated and haunted the nation when she became one of the first missing children to be featured on a milk carton. The years between when the 12-year-old vanished from her living room in Greeley, Colorado — about 60 miles north of Denver — and the 2020 arrest of her shocking killer are the subject of a two-part true crime special, The Girl on the Milk Carton , premiering Sunday, August 25, 2024 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
Here's what to know about Jonelle and what happened to her.

Who was Jonelle Matthews?
Jonelle was the adopted daughter of Jim and Gloria Matthews and the younger sister of the Matthews’ biological daughter, Jennifer. Gloria told the Fort Collins Coloradoan in 2019 that Jonelle was “strong in everything.”
“She was strong physically; she was strong-willed,” Jonelle's mom said. “All throughout her life, even when she was a little girl, she knew what she wanted... and she let you know.”
The parents moved frequently for work, but at the time of Jonelle’s disappearance, Jim — who’d previously worked an administrative job at a Christian school — was the principal at Platte Valley Elementary School in Kersey, about 10 miles east of Greeley.
The Matthews clan were described as a tight-knit family who regularly attended church, Jonelle enjoyed the typical things that kids did in the 1980s like riding bikes, having sleepovers, and fawning over boy bands like Menudo, her childhood friend Deanna Ross told the Coloradoan .
“She was very funny and just very loud,” Ross added. “She was really theatrical and dramatic and just the center of the room.”
The night Jonelle Matthews disappeared
On December 20, 1984, the night of Jonelle’s disappearance, she and her friend Deanna performed in their middle school’s honor choir, singing Christmas carols in an event that was televised for a local cable network. Jonelle’s father had attended a basketball game at her sister Jennifer’s high school, and his wife was visiting her ailing father in California. Deanna’s father agreed to drive Jonelle to her Greeley split-level home at around 8 p.m., and didn't think much of the fact that the garage door at the Matthews house was partially open.
About half an hour later, Jonelle answered the phone at her home and took a message for her father, which placed her abduction sometime between 8:30 p.m. and when her father Jim came home to an empty house just one hour later.
Jim had no cause for alarm until his older daughter returned home from the basketball game around 10 p.m. with no information about Jonelle’s whereabouts. According to The Colorado Sun , Jim found the TV and the heater near Jonelle’s chair still turned on. A pair of the 12-year-old’s stockings had been left on the couch, and her shoes were left behind and put away.
“After being home for about a half an hour, I just had a really strange feeling because our girls were very good about letting us know if they were gonna change their plans, leaving a note or calling,” Jim said, according to The Colorado Sun .
Police in Greeley responded to the scene, though there was little to work with besides the strange footprints in the snow outside one of the home’s windows. As later revealed at trial, it appeared that someone attempted to cover their tracks with a rake, according to The Denver Gazette .

Before Amber Alerts existed, the mid-1980s saw photos of missing kids plastered on milk cartons around the U.S. The wide-reaching publicity came at a time when the separate cases of Etan Patz , Adam Walsh , and Johnny Gosch raised awareness and prompted legislation to help missing kids and those searching for them. The year Jonelle disappeared was the same year that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was established.
The nationally coordinated Missing Children Milk Carton Program , initiated by the National Child Safety Council , came to life in December of 1984, the same month Jonelle disappeared.
Despite Jonelle’s tragic distinction as a milk carton kid, and former U.S. President Ronald Reagan mentioning her by name in a 1985 speech, the publicity didn’t help bring her loved ones any closer to the truth at the time. What happened to the girl would remain a mystery for more than three decades to come.
Jonelle Matthews' remains found 35 years after she went missing
On July 23, 2019, an oil crew digging for a pipeline in “ a desolate field southeast of Greeley ,” about 20 miles from the Matthews’ home, discovered skeletal remains, including a skull with orthodontic braces, Oxygen.com previously reported . Pieces of fabric also matched the plaid skirt, blouse, and sweater vest Jonelle wore on the night of her Christmas choir concert.
Police confirmed two days later that the remains belonged to Jonelle, and evidence proved she was shot in the head.
On October 9, 2020, a grand jury indicted Steven Dana Pankey , a person of interest identified early in the investigation, on charges of kidnapping and murder. Pankey, authorities stated, was a neighbor to the Matthews family and attended the same church.
Pankey was a gubernatorial candidate in Idaho who ran two failed campaigns (once in 2014 and once in 2018) and was overly invested in Jonelle’s missing persons case. In an indictment obtained by Oxygen.com , Pankey’s electronic devices proved he looked up the case thousands of times.

Of the many details outlined in the affidavit for Pankey’s arrest , Pankey had mentioned the rake used to cover the footprints in the snow outside the Matthews' house, information police deliberately kept out of the press. Pankey also wrote a letter in 2013 stating: “About a week after the fact, I realized a blanket, or comforter, or quilt, also disappeared from the Matthews’ house... some experiences are hard to forget.”
Pankey’s former wife gives more details about her ex in The Girl on the Milk Carton , debuting Sunday, August 25, 2024, on Oxygen .
“Pankey’s ex-wife, a key witness in the case against him, bravely comes forward to exclusively share her experience of living with a deluded fantasist and sadistic murderer and reveals the crucial evidence that led to his prosecution," the special's synopsis reads.

Russell Ross: Where is Deanna Ross’ Father Now?
Oxygen’s ‘The Girl on the Milk Carton’ is a two-episode docuseries that puts the spotlight on the disappearance case of 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews from her Greeley residence in December 1984. While most of the focus is on the victim, her family members, and the perpetrator, the episodes also provide details about Jonelle’s best friend’s father, Russell Ross, who talks about his account of the fateful night in the interview. Since he dropped Jonelle off at her house, the police also questioned him.
Russell Ross Was the Last Adult to See Jonelle Matthews Alive
On the night of December 20, 1984, Jonelle Matthews had a concert with her school’s choir group while her sister Jennifer had an important basketball game to play. Given his interest in sports, their father, Jim Matthews, decided to attend the latter’s game. So, when Jonelle Matthews finished performing at the concert, her father was not there to pick her up. Her best friend, Deanna Ross, was also a part of the choir, so when her father, Russell Ross, came by to pick her up, they offered Jonelle a ride back home too.
As per Russell’s account of the night, he dropped Jonelle off right outside her Greeley residence and even waited for her to flicker the porch light indicating that she had made it inside safe and sound. However, he did notice that the garage was open when they reached the property, which he told Jonelle’s father when he called him to ask about his daughter. Little did he know that he would end up being the last adult to see him alive. When he heard the news of the 12-year-old girl’s disappearance, Russell kept going back to the night, wondering if he missed something and failed to notice.
At one point, even he was a suspect and a person of interest in the eyes of the authorities. Finally, several decades later, when Steven Pankey was accused of kidnapping and murdering Jonelle Matthews, Russell testified in his October 2021 trial. He said that nothing seemed out of the ordinary on the fateful night. He also told the court that he was Steve Pankey’s supervisor at Greeley’s 7UP factory in the early 1980s.
Russell Ross is a Now-Retired Ambassador of a Colorado-based Chamber of Commerce
After his stint as a sales manager at a Greeley 7UP, Russell Ross worked with Westview Printing and Graphics around the early 1990s. Meanwhile, in 1993, he became a member of the Evans Area Chamber of Commerce. After being a member for almost two decades, he was promoted to the position of ambassador in 2012. A few years later, he moved up the ranks again and began serving as a membership director of the chamber in 2017. As an integral part of the EACC, he attends many events associated with the chamber. For instance, on February 16, 2017, he attended the Evans Area Chamber of Commerce business after-hours event at the Homewood Suites by Hilton. As a token of acknowledgment and recognition of his services over the decades, Russell received the Ambassador of the Year award for the year 2021.
As of today, Russell is reportedly retired but that doesn’t mean he has cut all ties with the chamber. He still oversees a few operations of the Evans Area Chamber of Commerce and rejoices upon witnessing small business owners emerge victorious in their endeavors. While he seems to still be a resident of Greeley, Colorado, his daughter, Deanna Ross, lives in Englewood and regularly donates to fundraisers. In 2023, the Ross family suffered a huge loss when Russell’s brother, Thomas Ross, passed away. Now that he is retired, Russell seemingly gets time to focus on himself as well as spend more time with his family, friends and loved ones.

Healy: 'Door is still wide open' for Jonassen to return
Jess Jonassen has been given hope of forcing her way back into the Australia side after she was omitted from a World Cup squad for the first time where she has been available.
Despite having 105 T20Is to her name, the writing was on the wall for Jonassen when she was left out of the squad to tour Bangladesh earlier this year and it was always going to be difficult to find her way back in amid a strong spin group that features Georgia Wareham, Sophie Molineux, Alana King and Ash Gardner.
The only previous occasion that Jonassen has missed a World Cup was the 2013 ODI edition when she was ruled out through injury after originally being selected.
It is Molineux's return to fitness after a couple of injury-hit seasons, alongside the selectors' preference to have two legspinners in the squad, that played a big part in forcing Jonassen out. She lost her spot in the T20I team last summer after being given some heavy punishment by Hayley Matthews at North Sydney Oval and has not played an ODI since last July in Ireland.
Jonassen took 11 wickets in seven matches for Delhi Capitals in the WPL earlier this year and is currently at the WCPL playing for Trinbago Knight Riders off the back of an impressive Hundred campaign which brought 12 wickets and 176 runs for Welsh Fire .
"Hundred per cent, the path's still there, the door is still wide open," Australia captain Alyssa Healy said of Jonassen. "You look at her career and how it's progressed, particularly over the past five or six years, she's been in the squad, out of the squad, her and Sophie Molineux have sort of [gone] tit-for-tat along the way.
"I'm disappointed for Jono myself. I have played a lot of cricket with her over the years and know exactly what she can contribute to the Australian team in big tournaments and how clutch she can be. I still see a big future for her in the Aussie side, there's always a niggle or whatnot around [during] the summer, and she'll still be around this summer no doubt."
Jonassen's absence is another part of the subtle evolution of the Australia side over the last couple of years which has seen the retirement of Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning, although a senior core of Healy, Gardner, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry and Megan Schutt remains.
The depth in Australian cricket is such that replacements have been close to hand and they are now starting to be given a greater role in the side. This upcoming World Cup will be a first for Phoebe Litchfield , who has a T20I strike rate of 161.86 after a breakout 2023-24 season in the middle order, while allrounder Annabel Sutherland is coming off a Player-of-the-Tournament performance in the Hundred.
"We've seen a fair bit of change," Healy said. "You even look at the last 12-18 months, the turnover we've had, we've lost over 700 games of experience. It's got to come at some point in time, [but] fortunately there's still a few of us old birds still floating around who can hopefully impart some wisdom on how to win tournaments. Think the youth in our group is really exciting and hopefully we can just help mentor or lead them in the right direction because think the youth in our squad is going to win this World Cup for us."
There is also a chance that Australia could field the pace duo of Darcie Brown and Tayla Vlaeminck in an XI together for the first time, either in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand in September, which provides preparation for the World Cup, or the tournament itself, although that will be dictated by conditions in the UAE.
Even if it doesn't happen over the next couple of months, it's an enticing prospect for the Ashes, which will take place in January.
"I'd love to see it," Healy said of the two playing together. "We are so blessed with ample allrounders that I think we can play around a little bit with our fast-bowling attack. Think having those two in our side is huge point of difference, especially in [the] conditions potentially we are going to get, having real pace in your side is a real advantage.
"We'll have to wait and see what the make-ups of the side are but it's really exciting for the future that those two are in the squad in together and hopefully we can get them firing at the same time."
