Dining Options Onboard The Aurora

Bar & lounge options onboard the aurora, cultural options onboard the aurora, technology options onboard the aurora, family options onboard the aurora, rest & relaxation options onboard the aurora, sports options onboard the aurora, entertainment options onboard the aurora.

Aurora Life on Board

P&O Cruises offers the very best in cruise entertainment. Days can be filled with as much or as little as you want, whilst evenings are no doubt the social highlight. When the sun goes down your ship begins to come alive with the hum of conversation and music, and you can be sure of a memorable night.

The Playhouse

This fantastic cinema screens feature films and recent releases throughout the day and into the evening.

The Playhouse, is located midships on D Deck, next to the Photo Gallery. You can watch films that are so new, that they haven't yet reached your local cinema at home. There are 213 spacious and comfortable chairs and good visibility for everyone. In addition to films, The Playhouse is also the venue for classical recitals, lectures, port enhancement talks, and much more.

The Crow's Nest

High up on Sun Deck at the forward end of the ship you will find The Crow's Nest.

At 105 feet above the waterline, this stylish cocktail bar is higher than the bridge and affords the ship's most amazing views.

By day you can watch the glistening sea as the world floats by in this comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. But as evening draws in The Crow's Nest comes into its own; with a light tickling of the ivories to set the mood, there's no better vantage point from which to enjoy a dramatic sunset at sea.

Nestled on Promenade Deck, is Champions sports bar.

With a modern look and high-tech feel, the bar is full of memorabilia from great sporting moments. You can watch major sporting events, both live and recorded, on large TV screens, and enjoy a beer and a chat with other sports-minded guests. If you're a sports fanatic - you'll love Champions!

The Curzon Theatre

This large single tier theatre on the promenade deck, offers a range of West End Style productions and cabaret shows. Seating 600 guest, it is decorated with rich tones of reds, blues and golds and features high tech sound and lighting systems to enhance the West-End style musical shows that take place on the 74ft wide stage.

Visiting guest acts such as comedians also perform in the theatre.

Traditional sofas, bookcases and panelled walls create a very British ambience and the feel of an exclusive country club.

You will find Anderson's on Promenade Deck. Welcoming and elegant and ideally located next to the Curzon Theatre, its refined setting is perfect for a pre-show drink or a warming nightcap. The bar is named after Arthur Anderson, the founder of P&O, who is said to have had an amazing attention to detail. So we certainly believe he would have approved of the long bar, the ornate fireplace and the traditional artworks.

Vanderbilt's

If bridge is your forte you will enjoy the tournaments held here.

Vanderbilt's is located on the starboard side of D Deck, midships, adjacent to Raffles Bar. Take part in a tournament or stop by for one of the competitive evening syndicate quizzes.

Uganda Room

This private party room is elegantly decorated with wood panelling and floor-to-ceiling windows.

At the forward end of Sun Deck, you'll find the Uganda Room which is furnished with comfortable seating and tables. It's the perfect venue to host your own special occasion, whether it be a birthday, anniversary or just a get together with newly met friends. We can also arrange for a selection of canapés and drinks for you, as well as a dedicated steward to serve your guests.

Atrium and Palm Court

Dominated by John Mill's 35 foot sculpture, Aurora's Atrium is in a classic galleried style and spans four decks.

Reminiscent in style of the hugely influential artist René Lalique, the work provides an impressive backdrop to the stylish double main staircase. A veil of water surrounds the two mythical figures cast in resin. From this central hub and just a few steps away you'll find the shore excursions desk, Reception and Aurora's shops.

Palm Court is situated at the base of the four-deck Atrium on F Deck. The split stairs of the Atrium join at the base of the lalique-style sculpture and waterfall, creating a magnificent descent to the spacious Reception area.

Monte Carlo Casino

The Monte Carlo Casino it a great place to continue a fun night out after post dinner drinks or a show. It is adorned with purple leather chairs around felt gaming tables, giving the casino a sumptuous, glamorous feel. In addition to the two roulette tables and three blackjack tables, passengers will find over 50 slot machines.

Raffles Bar

The name Raffles is synonymous with sophistication and elegance and the rich wood panelling.

Raffles Bar, situated on D Deck, overlooks Mayfair Court and Piccadilly Court on the deck below. Expect marble flooring and a luxurious leather padded bar, which exudes the grandeur and refinement of its namesake. As well as an array of tempting liqueurs, you can sample the most delicious handmade chocolates and specialist coffees throughout the day and into the evening.

Incorporating Raffles Bar on D Deck and wrapping around the top deck of the four-deck atrium, is Raffles Court.

A wonderful area to meet up with new friends for a mid-afternoon break or after dinner drink, the court offers lovely views of the atrium and its 35 foot centre-piece sculpture. Comfortable sofas and chairs, in conjunction with soft lighting, create a relaxing ambience. Raffles Court also offers access to Vanderbilt's card room and Sindhu.

The place to be seen on Aurora, Charlie's offers a cool place to relax.

Charlie's is midships on the port side of Promenade Deck, just off Mayfair Court. An elegant baby grand sets the mood in this stylish champagne bar, as tiny rock-crystal lenses on the ceiling create a glittering starry effect - the perfect complement the champagne sparkling in your glass. On a typical 14-night cruise aboard Aurora, 650 bottles of champagne are consumed and you can be sure a large percentage of these are enjoyed in Charlie's.

Pennant Bar by Night

Located at the stern, high on Lido Deck, the Pennant Bar adds a taste of the tropics to Aurora.

This outdoor island bar overlooks the ship's fabulous tiered decks and is the centre of many lunchtime activities, including themed lunches like the much loved and anticipated Neptune's Buffet. In the evening it is the perfect location to watch the ship's wake as it stretches out and winds its way into the sunset.

The Terrace Bar is a poolside bar located on deck 8, serving the Terrace Pool with drinks and ice cream.

The outdoor Crystal Bar serves the ship's main midship pool located on deck 12.

The alfresco Riviera Bar serves the Riviera pool located on deck 12 also.

Passengers can watch the waves as they work out with all the latest equipment, including exercise bikes, rowing machines, running machines, steppers, resistance machines and a range of weights. After the workout, visitors can head to the Oasis Spa for a relaxing massage, a stimulating therapeutic treatment or a warming and cleansing sauna.

With superb ocean views and relaxing cream décor, the tranquil Oasis Spa is the perfect place to relax and be pampered. In the treatment rooms you can enjoy private ocean views as you succumb to a relaxing massage. Also linked to the Oasis Spa is the hydrotherapy pool, which offers a hydromassage; a type of treatment that increases circulation, eases tension and aids restful sleep. Flooded with light via a pyramid skylight, the hydropool lies in the centre of several tiled columns. Alternatively passengers can head for Arcadia's thermal suite on the starboard side where they'll find three steam rooms, a sauna and a heated swimming pool.

Sports Court

Whether you enjoy the friendly competition of an organised tournament or prefer to play casually with your own party, short tennis, football, volleyball, basketball and cricket are just some of the options available in the Sports Court.

Oasis Salon

The fully equipped salon is the perfect place for those who want to look their best. Located in the spa, passengers can try a new colour or style in the hands of fully trained stylists.

Crystal Pool

The ship's main pool, offers a traditional lido feel, without the cold water. This elegant pool is flanked by two large whirlpool spas and offers a large number of sun loungers for you to relax on.

Terrace Pool

Normally reserved for families and surrounded by children's rooms, Aurora's third pool was designed with safety in mind.

The Terrace Pool is situated at the stern of D Deck. There's a paddling pool for the small children and a jacuzzi and bar for the 'big children' and a lot of deck space and lounge chairs.

Riviera Pool

Located on A Deck and cleverly sheltered from the wind by the Lido and Sun Decks, you'll find the Riviera Pool.

At 29 feet long and 19 feet wide, it's the second largest pool on Aurora. The overflow from the pool forms a gentle waterfall, which runs down to the next level, where a tempting jacuzzi waits. The full-service Riviera Bar is conveniently close and overlooks the entire pool area, and sun worshippers will enjoy the three terraces full of deck chairs that surround the pool.

Practice your swing!

Securely enclosed in netting, you can perfect your swing as you sail on to the next course. Clubs and balls are provided, or you can use your own.

Aurora Itineraries

Aurora review, review of aurora.

The 2001-built P&O Aurora cruise ship is one of the older P&O UK liners. The drydock refit in 2014 made it the first in the fleet with the company's new hull livery - the Union Jack flag.

In February 2018, P&O UK announced that Aurora becomes an adults-only ship, after the scheduled drydock refurbishment in March 2019. The ship joined the adult-only fleetmate Arcadia on April 8, 2019. Both boats are exclusively for adults.

The vessel (IMO number 9226906) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310556000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

P&O Cruises is a subsidiary company and two brands owned by Carnival Corporation - P&O UK and P&O Australia. In 2000, P&O Cruises became subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation in 2003. P and O is the world's oldest cruise company, starting passenger shipping operations in 1822 on the routes connecting England with Iberia.

PO Aurora cruise ship

The 1900-passenger ship Aurora operates some of the best luxury ship cruises from England, with cheap affordable cruises from UK ports. This one is among the most family-friendly cruise ships in the UK, featuring the PO Aurora World cruise deals from Southampton by the UK best cruise line. One of the best England cruise ships, P&O Aurora serves predominantly the British market, with a great variety of itineraries (mainly in Europe). With her classic design and tiered stern, she is more similar to the traditional ocean liners, and just like “the good old ones”, she offers sheer luxury, premium cruising experiences, stylish entertainment, and 5-star hotel amenities. The PO Aurora cruise ship reviews often recommend this vessel and its itineraries as presenting the best and cheap options for birthday celebrations and wedding anniversaries at sea, small family reunions, and for spending quality family time together.

Decks and Cabins

P&O Aurora staterooms (962 total, in 20 grades) including 30x Suites, 381x Balconies, 253x Oceanviews, 288x Inside, 10x Single cabins (Oceanview). Most cabins are sized 150-175 ft2 / 14-16 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 30-40 ft2 / 3-4 m2. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 22. The largest passenger accommodations are the Penthouse Suites (Duplex Apartments sized 865 ft2 / 80 m2, with terrace 70 ft2 / 7 m2).

The boat has 13 decks , of which 10 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The decor of the vessel is not from the most exciting that passengers have ever seen and appeals to the older Brits. There is a 2-sitting fixed dining system in the dining venues and dress codes are enforced in the restaurants and in the basic bars in the evenings. The ship's main dining rooms are two (Medina and Alexandria restaurants), both with open-seating (serving breakfast and lunch) and Club dining at dinner (fixed seating). Alternative/specialty restaurant is Cafe Bordeaux (by chef Marco Pierre White) with Mediterranean cuisine. Dinner reservations are required, and a surcharge is applied. Other P&O UK cruise ships

Aurora wiki.

MS Aurora was specifically designed to appeal to the UK cruising market. Since British travelers are more attracted by traditionally looking ships, vessel's hull and superstructure as design resemble traditional ocean liners. Design's basics were taken from mv Oriana , but largely extended and improved (cabins and facilities).

P&O Aurora (Papenburg shipyard/hull number 640) is powered by MAN B&W marine diesel engines (model 14V48/60) generating total power output 56 MW.

A most unfortunate event in mv Aurora's history happened at the very beginning of its service. Vessel's royal godmother (Princess Anne) failed to shatter the champagne bottle in the hull during the christening ceremony in Southampton . And many blamed this for the canceled Maiden Voyage (May 1, 2000) when due to a serious technical problem the Inaugural cruise to the Mediterranean was canceled after only 16 hrs at sea. The ship was taken out of service for drydock repairs, and passengers refund/compensation package cost P&O UK about GBP 6 million. Aurora returned to service 2 weeks later.

The liner was christened on April 27, 2000, by godmother HRH Princess Royal. The list of other P and O cruise ships named by British Royals includes Oriana (April 6, 1995, by HM The Queen), Britannia (March 10, 2015, by HM The Queen) and the ships Oceana and Adonia (Azamara Pursuit since 2018) . Both vessels were named on May 21, 2003, by HRH Princess Royal and her daughter Zara Phillips.

The list of P&O World Cruise ships, besides Aurora also includes mv Arcadia .

P&O Aurora refurbishments review

The ship is currently scheduled for a drydock refurbishment in April 2025.

Aurora's renovation project in 2023 (April-May) resulted in new chairs (in all passenger staterooms), new furniture (on all cabin balconies), and new deckchairs/furniture on all open deck areas. Neptune Pool's sundeck was upgraded with new garden furniture (loungers, sofas, tables, armchairs).

Follows the list of deck plan changes after the 2014 drydock refurbishment in Hamburg (Nov 29 thru Dec 18) conducted at Blohm+Voss.

  • new livery design. The refit in 2014 makes ms Aurora the first of all P and O cruise ships with the new livery for the P&O line- the Union Jack flag (on the hull/bow) and the funnel’s new livery design will feature a contemporary version of the Union Flag and new blue funnels with illuminated rising sun designs.
  • (Deck 8) New Indian cuisine restaurant (“Sindhu”, by Atul Kochhar) replaces the library, which is to be relocated to Deck 13 (where is the  cyb@study).
  • (Deck 8) Cafe Bordeaux to be replaced by the wine bar/specialty restaurant “Glass House”.
  • Venues to receive renovations (decor and furniture changes): Lido Buffet, Sidewalk Cafe and the Spa (on Deck 12), Reef Club (Deck 8, changes in the kids' rooms names), Champions Bar, Casino, the Theatre and Carmen’s Lounge (all on Deck 7).
  • New Grill evening menu (“The Beach House”)
  • New venues: Medina Restaurant (Deck 6, with more 2-seats tables), “Grab & Go” food station and specialty “Costa Coffee” bar
  • passenger cabins amenities upgrade (new flat TVs, furnishings).

Drydock 2014 refurbishment’s total cost was GBP 26 million (~USD 44 million).

Aurora's drydocking in 2022 (June 9-23) was at Harland & Wolff shipyard (in Belfast, Northern Ireland ). Before the 2022 drydock, the boat was drydocked for general maintenance works in March 2019.

Around South America cruises 2023

Next table shows Aurora's 65-night/66-day itinerary (booking code R301) Around South America roundtrip from the UK.

Prices started from GBP 1450 () per person with double occupancy.

P&O Aurora World Cruise 2022 (canceled)

In 2021, P&O UK planned a 100-day "World Cruise 2022" on MS Aurora, leaving roundtrip from Southampton (January 3 thru April 13). Paul Ludlow (P&O UK's President) commented that was "not possible" to operate the scheduled voyage due to the "complex logistics" (COVID impact) involved with a global itinerary.

The canceled voyage was also available for booking in smaller itinerary segments:

  • (Jan 3) 49-days Southampton to Sydney
  • (Jan 3) 24-days Southampton to San Francisco
  • (Feb 21) 51-days Sydney to Southampton
  • (Feb 21) 23-days Sydney to Singapore
  • (Feb 21) 19-days Sydney to Hong Kong
  • (Feb 23) 49-day Brisbane to Southampton
  • (Feb 23) 17-days Brisbane to Hong Kong
  • (Mar 12) 14-days Hong Kong to Dubai
  • (Mar 12) 32-days Hong Kong to Southampton
  • (Mar 26) 18-days Dubai to Southampton

Instead, the ship was rescheduled to operate two substitutes/Southampton roundtrips (sales opened on July 6, 2021) leaving in 2022 on February 22 (Transatlantic to the Caribbean) and April 1 (to the Canaries).

The 40-night Caribbean itinerary (priced from GBP 2150 pp) visits La Coruna Galicia, Funchal Madeira, Basseterre St Kitts, Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe, Oranjestad Aruba, Castries St Lucia, St Georges Grenada, Kingstown St Vincent Grenadines, Bridgetown Barbados, Kralendijk Bonaire.

The 12-night "Portugal and the Canaries" itinerary (priced from GBP 600 pp) visits Santa Cruz de la Palma, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arrecife de Lanzarote, and Lisbon Portugal.

A 3rd passenger (in the same cabin) paid just GBP 200 (on both P&O Aurora cruises).

We are very excited to be boarding Aurora for the first time on the 10th December.

Although we do not plan to spend all the cruise watching telly, we do enjoy relaxing on the odd sea day watching a film or something in our cabin.

On our last cruise on Britannia, we always found a film or something to watch.

Can anybody advise on what we can expect on Aurora, not that it really matters as we will find plenty to do, just wondering really.

Thank you in advance.

Cool Cruiser

Strawberry field

It's been a year now so I can't remember the channels etc but I can remember the small tv that had a bad picture and the fact that the bracket was bent and screen at an angle. A year previous we were on Britannia where the tv was excellent. I did mention it to reception and their answer was we will get it sorted sir...........but they didn't. Other than that Aurora is a lovely ship and we loved the cruise. I'm sure you will enjoy it

Aurora is a lovely ship and our favourite but the Small tv's let it down, you can hardly read any small print on the screens! Let's hope they change them on it's refit next year but dowt it.

Remember Aurora also has a dedicated cinema and when we were on for the 65 night trip last January we found we went to the cinema more than we'd been in the past year.  They happened to be showing films we'd missed and really wanted to see.  The cinema is a proper one on Aurora, not just a room put aside for showing films.

Otter18

Lovely ship, but awful televisions, unless they have updated them since last year. You would be better off going to the cinema as the last poster mentioned.

I'm guessing they may install more advanced TV screens when the ship is refurbished next year, and becomes an adult only ship.

groovechick

We love Aurora, she's certainly my favourite ship, but sadly the TV and channels bear no comparison to Britannia. On Britannia in 2015 there were lots of relatively new films/films I had wanted to see but hadn't been able to, recent TV series, etc. etc. After a busy day in port or when I'd had enough soon, chilling out with a cold drink, watching a film, was a nice way to relax before getting ready for dinner. The choice on Aurora is very poor, as I recall old (and I mean old) TV series, documentaries and films. If we wanted to watch a film on Aurora we went to the cinema, which showed a good selection of fairly recent films.

Does anyone know what the wheelchair facilities are like in the Aurora cinema, do they have a designated area, and can the carer sit alongside the wheelchair?

From memory, the back row has a few seats at either end, and vacant spaces for wheelchairs in the centre.

Quite poor, unfortunately. As with the theatre, only one of the seats reserved for disabled  guests is level with a space where a wheelchair can go. With the others, the adjacent seats are up steps, so you cannot sit alongside a companion who has to remain in their wheelchair or scooter. Sadly, those with less challenging disabilities (walk with a stick etc) tend to sit in these seats first, even though they might be able to walk up a step or two quite easily. We tend to find that in order to stand any chance of being able to sit alongside one another we have to turn up around half an hour early, which is irritating.

There are spaces at the very back in the centre, but it’s quite a slope up to it and a self propelled wheelchair user might struggle to get up there. There are also bars between this area and the closest seats. We love the Playhouse on Aurora but fellow guests tend to wander in and out through performances and in doing so leave the door open, so you are constantly distracted by comings and goings and noise from the corridor outside. Sadly, the one decent wheelchair space is very close to the entrance which makes this particularly noticeable.

And to address the original question, the TV’s on Aurora are absolutely rubbish. Too small, poor picture quality and no interactivity whatsoever. The ones on Britannia are superb. We can live in hope that Aurora May get them in next years refit, but I think it’s unlikely. Great shame as, for the reasons mentioned in my last post, we don’t watch films in the theatre or cinema, but love to watch them on demand in our cabin when we are on Britannia.

  • 2 weeks later...

Quick update, just back and can confirm the TVs on Aurora are rubbish. Poor picture, too far away and pointless channels. The cinema was very good, but only one film a day shown at various times, so not always to our taste, we watched 2 films in 9 days.

Lets hope the TVs get upgraded in the refurb, but rumours on board are they are only adding cabins and updating some public areas, so I doubt it.

Refloating efforts could start this week for cruise ship Aurora sinking into Delta, officials say

S AN JOAQUIN COUNTY – Crews are now installing dewatering pumps on a decommissioned cruise ship sinking into the Delta near Stockton .

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Spill Prevention & Response division gave an update on the status of the ship Aurora on Tuesday. The old ship had been docked in Potato Slough, in the area of Empire Tract and Eight Mile Road, when it started taking on water in late May.

With the ship leaking diesel fuel and oil into the Delta, a unified response was deployed by several local agencies to contain the situation.

CDFW officials said work started over the weekend to install dewatering pumps on the Aurora.

Further, officials said efforts to refloat and remove any remaining fuel could also start this week.

A safety zone remains in place around the Aurora, officials said.

CDFW noted that they haven't seen any impacts on wildlife in the area so far. Notably, the sinking Aurora is in the same location where a tugboat sank and started leaking fuel in September 2023.

The Aurora has a storied past , with its former cruise ship days serving as an inspiration for the hit 1970s TV show "The Love Boat." It also appeared in the 1963 James Bond film "From Russia With Love."

The Aurora has been moored near Stockton for some time now, but it's unclear exactly how long.

Efforts Underway to Refloat Cruise Ship Leaking Oil into California River Delta

Picture of Andrea Santillan

  • June 13, 2024

Efforts are now underway to refloat the nearly 300-foot decommissioned cruise ship Aurora, which began sinking in the California Delta near Stockton in May.

69 year old cruise ship sinking

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Office of Spill Prevention and Recovery have formed a unified command to address the issue.

Over the weekend, crews started installing dewatering pumps on the Aurora, and these efforts will continue throughout the week. Authorities aim to refloat the vessel and remove any remaining fuel to mitigate environmental damage.

The Aurora, which started sinking on May 22 while docked in Little Potato Slough along the San Joaquin River, has been leaking diesel fuel and oil into the Delta. Immediate efforts were made to contain and remove contaminants from the waterway.

The ship, originally christened the Wappen Von Hamburg, was built in 1955 and was West Germany’s first large-scale shipbuilding project following World War II.

refloat sunken california cruise ship 1

It later inspired the 1970s TV show “The Love Boat” and appeared in the 1963 James Bond film “From Russia With Love.”

Sunken Cruise Ship Ignites Government Action

Representative Josh Harder recently visited the sinking Aurora and has since backed the Abandoned and Derelict Vessel Removal Act . This legislation addresses the broader issue of abandoned and deteriorating ships in the Delta, which pose significant safety and environmental hazards.

Aurora restoration project

The proposed Abandoned and Derelict Vessel Removal Act would:

  • Establish a process for determining if a vessel is abandoned before removal.
  • Allow the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to pay for removing deteriorating abandoned vessels while holding vessel owners responsible for reimbursing the costs.
  • It is mandatory that vessels purchased during federal auctions have proper insurance and that their owners can maintain them.
  • Give the Army Corps of Engineers the authority to remove abandoned dangerous vessels.
  • Establish a central inventory of abandoned and derelict vessels.

“Protecting our water is essential to keeping families, our environment, and wildlife safe,” said Rep. Harder. “We have to get these hazardous ships out of our waters and hold owners accountable.”
