More information about Colombia

A less-traveled treasure, Colombia is quickly emerging as one of South America’s most rewarding travel destinations. With idyllic Caribbean coastlines, cities bursting with characterful, colorful architecture and lush coffee-growing valleys, a trip to Colombia is a safe bet for a memorable adventure. Situated in the north of the continent, just below the isthmus of Central America, Colombia is famed for its diverse cities, such as Cartagena, Medellin and the capital, Bogota, which offer experiences as varied as twilight carriage rides, street art tours or the chance to trace the country’s sparkling heritage at the Museum of Gold.

Not to mention, Colombia does fiestas like no other and is well-known for its lively nightlife. Latin music lovers can experience the immense Barranquilla Carnival, which easily rivals Rio’s, or dig into the culture of Cali, the world capital of salsa. The great outdoors is something Colombia has in abundance. From coastal national parks such as Tayrona to tropical beaches complete with azure waters and coral reefs, not forgetting the soaring peaks of the awe-inspiring Andes, where you can get in touch with some of the most traditional sides of Colombian culture.

Colombia has thousands of parks and natural spaces where you can discover the country’s epic biodiversity. Its greatest reserve, the iconic Amazon , has always been one of the great frontiers for adventurers, who long to travel to Colombia.

History of Colombia

Colombia’s rich and complex history has contributed to its status as the fascinating travel destination that it is today. Originally inhabited by indigenous cultures such as the Quimbaya and the Tayrona, whose mysterious ruins can still be explored today on a tour of Colombia, Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1499 , marking the beginning of extensive colonization in the region. Spain’s ‘New Kingdom of Granada’ was established in Colombia , with Bogota as its capital. Cartagena and Santa Marta were also important Spanish settlements, as can still be seen in their charming colonial architecture.

In the 18th-century , prominent naturalists and scientists made the trip to Colombia to take part in the ‘ Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada’ , which brought to light the rich biodiversity of the region and undertook the important task of classifying the country’s abundant species. The early 19th-century was characterized by a series of struggles for independence from Spain , culminating in the historic rebellion, led by Simón Bolívar in 1819 , when the Spanish were defeated at the Battle of Boyaca. A new nation, comprising modern-day Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador and parts of Brazil and Guyana , was formed, named the Republic of Colombia.

This huge union did not last for long, collapsing in 1830 and giving birth to several new South American nations. Civil war blighted the remainder of the century, although Colombia was famously the first nation in South America to adopt a constitutional government. Communist insurgent campaigns in the 1960s attempted to overthrow the government, but since the early 2000s peace talks have finally brought an end to the 50-year long civil war. A holiday to Colombia is now a safe option and since the country has secured its new-found peace, travelers have been visiting in ever-growing numbers.

Nature in Colombia

Dive, climb, trek or simply kick-back on the beach; Colombia’s natural environment is perfect for outdoor adventures of any kind. One of the world’s most ‘ megadiverse’ countries, it is actually the most biodiverse when it comes to bird species. There are plenty of unique animals and plants to search for in Colombia’s rich natural havens and approximately 10% of the total species in the world can be found within the country’s territory, as well as a large number of rare endemic species. There’s a lot to be excited about on a holiday to Colombia if you’re a nature lover.

With environments ranging from the dense Amazon rainforest to the tropical shores of the Caribbean Coast, you cannot underestimate the diversity of Colombia. The lofty heights of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Santa Marta are a good place to start when exploring the nation’s landscapes. Sat close to the Caribbean coastline, these mountains are home to a thriving bird population, with species ranging from toucans to condors and parakeets, as well as predators such as cougars and jaguars. Several indigenous communities also inhabit the area. One of Colombia’s most famous natural havens is the Tayrona National Park , adored for its untouched beaches and accessible wildlife watching.

Here, you can spot several monkey species, elusive tree-dwelling jaguars and tiny dart frogs, to name only a few of its highlights. It’s the perfect place to combine laid-back beach relaxation with exciting wildlife trekking. One of the quintessential landscapes to experience if you travel to Colombia is the palm-fringed highlands of the Cocora Valley , situated between the Andes. It’s a picture-perfect sea of verdant trees, coffee plantations, and cloud forests. The Cocora Valley is the kind of tropical haven you’ve always dreamt of, not to mention a caffeine-addicts paradise!

Culture in Colombia

Ethnically diverse and eternally vibrant, Colombian culture is a fusion of its many different ethnicities and their unique traditions. Indigenous groups, descendants of Spanish colonists, Afro-Colombians and European migrants have all left an influence on modern-day Colombian culture. Many traditional arts, dances, and music can be traced back to the culture of Spain , whilst elements of the national cuisine, for example, are distinctively Caribbean in flavor, something you’ll notice in coastal cities such as Cartagena . Traditional Roman Catholic teachings lay the groundwork for family life, although the pull of urban life and the city have altered this somewhat. Culture in Colombia differs depending on the region, be it coastal, interior or in the mountains, each region has its distinct traditions and values.

Colombia is an artistic nation; art is actively encouraged and celebrated. In some cities, such as Bogota, graffiti has been decriminalized, making for colorful streets and surprisingly liberal freedom of expression. The capital also leads the way by encouraging healthy living and a green environment with its ‘ car-free Sundays’ , when cyclists and pedestrians take over the city, a weekly event which has become somewhat of a family ritual for the inhabitants of the capital. This Spanish- speaking nation also boasts a particularly hearty and delicious cuisine, so come with a healthy appetite and bulk up on the abundant tropical fruits that are an everyday luxury of traveling to Colombia.

A beautiful country with more than enough natural attractions and hidden corners for every traveler to find their slice of Colombian paradise. Vibrant, forward-looking cities, with an astounding variety of culture, make a tour of Colombia and eye-opening and heart-warming adventure for all travelers.

Culture and customs.

Colombian culture tends to revolve around the Four F’s: Festivals, Food, Fun, and Family. While this bold and beautiful nation loves to party, it’s also a very traditional, family-centered society, with many Colombians choosing to live near their families and remain at home until marriage.

With most Colombians being Catholic, religion plays an important part in daily life, and visitors will be able to see this themselves while traveling through Colombia. Hundreds of churches and cathedrals populate the large cities, while smaller chapels are dotted throughout the villages and rural areas. Religious festivals like Easter and Christmas are celebrated with gusto – after quiet times of reverence come the massive street parties, parades, and feasts. A variety of cultural influences collide at these events - Spanish, African, and Caribbean customs and traditions have been brought to Colombia over the centuries and shaped its vibrant culture.

The hallmarks and customs of daily life vary from region to region, with Bogota’s upwardly mobile citizens enjoying bars, driving cars, and having access to a wide range of technology, cuisine, and media. Colombia’s rural dwellers (subsistence farmers, plantation workers, and tribal groups) live a more simple existence in rustic housing and without traffic or the stresses of modern life. What unifies most Colombians though, regardless of living conditions or class, is a fierce love of Colombia, respect for God, and loyalty to the family unit.

Geography and environment

Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia shares borders with   Venezuela ,   Brazil ,   Peru ,   Ecuador ,   and Panama, and is the only South American country to have a coastline on both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Home to a wide variety of natural environments and varying terrain, travelers can expect to see mountains give way to low-lying plains and tropical rainforests meet balmy beaches. Add sprawling metropolises, small farming communities, far-reaching plantations, fishing villages, and colonial-era towns, and you’ve got an ever-changing landscape at your fingertips.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Colombia has rich culinary traditions, quality fresh produce and loads of cosmopolitan bars, cafes, food stands and restaurants to visit. For a summary of what to eat in South America, check out   our in depth guide .

Things to try in Colombia

These popular thick corn tortillas can be found almost everywhere in Colombia. Baked or fried, with beef, cheese, pork, chicken or beans, they make the perfect breakfast or afternoon snack.

2. Bandeja Paisa

Originating from the Andean region of Colombia, this dish is a staple of most Colombian diets. Consisting of a plate of rice, beans, avocado, fried egg, chorizo and other meats, it’s a filling feast fit for a king!

3. Ajiaco Bogotano

This hearty chicken stew is a Bogota specialty. Packed with succulent chicken meat, corn, potatoes and herbs, it’s a tasty and satisfying budget meal.

4. Tropical fruit

Colombia is known for having some of the best fresh produce in the world. Bananas and plantains are among the best, and you’ll be able to find street vendors selling them fresh, fried and grilled. Fruit shakes are also widely available and offer travellers a chance to sample some exotic fruits that they may not have tried before.

History and government

Early history.

The area now known as Colombia was inhabited by Caribbean and Andean groups who lived in small communities based on organized agriculture. Spanish explorers were drawn to the land and fascinated by the proliferation of gold. The myth of El Dorado soon abounded, and the search for this land of gold soon became an obsession.

From the creation of Santa Marta in 1525, colonization spread rapidly throughout the rest of the country, leading to interest from neighboring countries that were also keen to exploit Colombia’s natural resources. Many Africans soon started to arrive as a part of the slave trade and provided a much-needed labor force for the colonizers. Life was tough for the slaves; however, African song, dance, and other afro-traditions helped to shape Colombian culture well into the future.

Recent history

Independence from Spain rose to the top of Colombia’s agenda after years of resentment. Simon Bolivar soon became a local hero, fighting for independence from the Spaniards. It took many years, but in 1819, Colombia was granted its freedom – Bolivar had fought his way into the minds and hearts of Colombia, where he is still revered.

However, this spirit of freedom was short-lived as Colombia descended into confrontation and civil war in the following years. Colombia seemed to be at the mercy of political opponents and guerrilla groups, weaving between periods of peace and extreme violence.

By the 1970s, Colombia had a new wave of criminal activity stemming from the lucrative cocaine trade. Pablo Escobar became one of the world’s most notorious (and wealthy) criminals by controlling most of the world’s drug trade. Colombia became a dangerous place to live (and travel in) during this period, yet has recently emerged victorious from these dark days. With vastly improved national security and a growing economy based on agriculture, textiles, and mineral mining, Colombia is welcoming back tourists with open arms.

Travelers might visit Colombia for the adrenaline sports, nature reserves, and beaches, however, retail therapy should also be included in that list, as Colombia’s shopping is surprisingly sensational.

It’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States generally has strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Colombia

1. Jewelry, art and handicrafts

Some of the best artisans in South America live in Colombia. Choose from handcrafted gold jewelry, bright textile bags and scarves, and vibrant contemporary art available in galleries, markets, and boutiques all over the country.

2. Fashion and accessories

Colombia’s more cosmopolitan cities have enough fashion-forward boutiques and malls to keep most clothes-hounds happy. Medellin in particular is well known for being Colombia’s fashion capital and is a true hotspot in the Latin American fashion world.

3. Coffee beans

As one of the world’s largest producers of coffee beans, Colombia is a great place to pick up top-quality beans at lower prices than back home. Buying straight from the coffee regions ensures quality and freshness.

Top 10 must-see cities of Colombia

1. medellin.

What makes Medellin so magnificent? Once considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Medellin’s temperate weather, hospitable locals, gorgeous gardens, and artistic enclaves have prevailed and this cultured city has emerged full of spirit, passion and optimism.

Explore Medellin on our 9 day Cafe Colombia tour.

This vibrant town may have been founded centuries ago, but nowadays Popayan has a youthful spirit due to the local university that attracts thousands of young Colombians to the region. Home to many of Colombia’s most celebrated poets, composers, and painters, Popayan also has some of the most stirring Easter celebrations in the world.

Known locally as the ‘Capital of Heaven’, Cali’s museums and public art may dazzle you, but it’s the up-and-coming food and party scene that’s getting loads of attention. With modern restaurants serving international cuisine, local eateries offering traditional fare, lively salsa bars open until dawn, and a fair worth traveling for in late December, Cali shouldn’t be missed!

4. Barichara

Less of a city and more of a colonial town, the faded charm of rustic Barichara has been endearing travelers for centuries. Colored, whitewashed buildings with carved wooden doors and red roofs, quaint little churches, and hilly streets make Barichara the perfect place to linger for a few days of quiet downtime.

Embrace the charm of Baricahra on our 10 day Explore Colombia adventure.

Colombia’s sprawling capital is a frenetic fusion of old and new, with skyscrapers towering over colonial buildings, wild traffic giving way to peaceful parks, and cobblestone streets leading to bohemian night spots. With so much going on, you’ll be exhausted trying keep up with Bogota’s pace.

Experience Bogota on our 17 day Best of Colombia tour.

Lofty Tunja’s historic architecture, spiritual sites, and lively festivals make it an interesting destination for travelers from all walks of life. Whether you’re interested in magnificent art, colonial-era architecture, or cultural enlightenment, Tunja delivers on all accounts.

7. Cartagena

Surrounded by walls built to guard against pirates, Cartagena captivates travelers with colonial mansions, cobbled streets, Spanish-style houses, and brightly colored buildings. History seems to drip from every street corner, especially when Cartagena takes on a golden glow by night.

Admire Cartagena on our 12 day Real Colombia tour.

8. Pamplona

Although one of Colombia’s less-visited spots, cultured Pamplona is well worth checking out. With a wealth of museums, galleries, and churches nestled within its narrow streets and rousing Holy Week celebrations, Pamplona offers a peak into Colombian traditions and daily life.

9. Santa Marta

Seaside Santa Marta attracts flocks of tourists chasing sunshine, scuba diving, and seafood. With beautiful beaches, atmospheric bars, chilled-out open-air cafes, and heritage sites, Santa Marta should feature on every travelers list.

10. San Gil

This small city is emerging as one of Colombia’s hottest new destinations, mainly due to the plethora of adventure sports on offer in the surrounding areas. Test your limits with paragliding, caving, rafting, and kayaking, and then relax in the pleasant botanical gardens and cafes of sunny San Gil.

Festivals and events

Barranquilla carnival.

Held in the lead up to Ash Wednesday each year, this spectacular collision of color, flashy costumes, lively dancing, and rhythmic Caribbean, Latin, and African beats draws more than one million revelers from around the world.

Medellin Feria de las Flores (Festival of the Flower)

Occurring each August, this week-long ode to local flower farmers (Colombia is one of the leading producers of cut flowers in the world) culminates in a colorful and fragrant parade, where farmers march the streets carrying silletas (elaborate flower arrangements) on their back.

Feria de Cali (Cali Fair)

The salsa capital of Colombia ends each year the only way it knows how – with a five-day city-wide party beginning right after Christmas featuring parades, music, bullfighting, a beauty pageant, food, and of course, salsa dancing.

Pasto Carnaval de Negros y Blancos (Black and White Carnival)

Each January, the city of Pasto engages in an unusual two-day celebration of racial equality – locals and visitors party on the street and paint each other black for Blacks’ Day and throw white powder on each other for Whites’ Day.

Night of the Candles

Homes and cities across the country are lit up with candles and paper lanterns to mark the unofficial start of the Christmas season. Taking place on the eve of the Immaculate Conception (a Catholic celebration and national holiday in Colombia), it’s a night meant for socializing with friends and family.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

St. Joseph’s Day

Ascension Day

Corpus Christi

Sacred Heart Day

Independence Day

Battle of Boyaca

Assumption Day

Dia de la Raza

All Saints Day

Independence of Cartagena City

Immaculate Conception

Colombia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Colombia?

There is always a good time to visit Colombia, as the seasons vary throughout the country. While the climate generally remains constant throughout the year, the temperature can change depending on where you are. In the far north, the climate is usually tropical, warm and humid, while central Colombia can get quite cool - Bogota is known for its mild temperatures, particularly at night.

The wet season is roughly from March to May and September to November, although this varies around the country. December to March is the peak travel period due to the dry conditions and holidays and festivals that proliferate across the country. During this time, expect more sunshine, but also more people competing for space in the cities and tourist regions.

Do I need a visa to visit Colombia?

Visitors from over 102 countries can enter Colombia without requiring a visa for a maximum of 90 days for tourist purposes. These countries include the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Travelers not from a visa-exempt country can apply for a tourist visa online or at the nearest Colombian embassy or consulate.

However, this is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Colombia?

Many Colombians receive low wages and leaving a 10% tip at mid-range and Western-style restaurants is customary and appreciated. Some restaurants automatically add a gratuity to the bill, in which case, there is no need to add any more. Tipping is not expected at more casual restaurants and cafes.

What is internet access like in Colombia?

Internet is easy to access at internet cafes and hotels in Colombia’s larger cities, although may be harder to find in more remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Colombia?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Colombia's large cities and urban areas. Coverage may not be available in more remote areas, especially mountainous regions. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Colombia?

Western-style flushable toilets are the standard in Colombia. It’s a good idea to carry some toilet paper with you as it’s not always provided. As a rule, never flush toilet paper. The toilets in Colombia can’t handle the paper so there’s usually a wastebasket provided to use instead.

Can I drink the tap water in Colombia?

Tap water in larger cities is safe to drink but should be avoided in rural areas. Avoid drinks with ice and peel fruit and vegetables before eating them in these areas as well. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle. Ask your trip leader where you can find filtered water. Some hotels may also provide water dispensers.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Colombia?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors in rural areas. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Colombia?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities like Bogota and Medellin but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Colombia?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Colombia but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Colombia a safe destination for LGBTQI travelers?

Same-sex relationships were declared legal by the Colombian government in 1981 and same-sex marriage has been legal in Colombia since 2013. While homosexuality is accepted in Colombia, perhaps more so than in other parts of South America, it remains an underground culture. Discretion is advised for LGBTQI travelers in Colombia.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Does my trip to Colombia support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Colombia directly support our foundation partner, Patrulla Aérea Civil Colombiana (PAC).

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

My 15 Favorite Experiences In Beautiful Bogotá, Colombia

W ith a personality marked by its culture, art, and Colonial heritage, Bogotá is a city of nonstop energy and color. The third-highest capital city in the world in altitude, Bogotá is also a city with traffic snarls, crowds, and the attenuating issues that come with urban life. But, overall, it’s a city that will entice you to visit again and again.

As a resident of New York City, I’m no stranger to urban chaos, but I’m also adept at searching out spaces that offer serenity. Bogotá offers a combination of energy levels, but be prepared if you suffer from altitude sickness — Bogotá is perched at 8,661 feet above sea level.

Join me as I share my favorite ways to experience this beautiful Colombian city through places to visit, traditions to explore, and sights to see.

Art And History

Bogotá is rich in cultural offerings. Bring your sunglasses — colorful is an understatement for this city. Three of its indoor museums are especially fascinating while the streets offer an outdoor art gallery bar none.

1. Museo Del Oro

Most visitors to Bogotá make a beeline to the Museo del Oro in La Candelaria, the city’s Colonial quarter. The museum houses an impressive collection of gold artifacts, jewelry, and carvings dating back to Colombia’s wealthy pre-Colonial times. The star attraction is the dazzling golden raft, believed to be part of the mythical gold-rich city of El Dorado.

Pro Tip: If you’re short on time, there’s a small Museo del Oro art and jewelry exhibit at the Bogotá airport.

2. Museo Botero

Also in La Candelaria, the Museo Botero features the buxom, larger-than-life sculptures of Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Stipulated by Botero to be free to everyone, the museum also showcases a collection of his paintings. Pause at the entrance for a photo near the oversized sculpture of a hand, then head to the adjacent rooms that rim the Colonial building.

3. Musa Bogotá

The city’s archeological museum, musa , is set in the 17th-century Casa del Marqués de San Jorge, now home to an extensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics. The building itself is a fine example of a preserved Colonial house with an outdoor courtyard.

4. La Candelaria Street Art

Graffiti and street art appear everywhere in Bogotá, but the La Candelaria historic quarter is the most well-known for its concentration of vibrant murals and thought-provoking messages. Both sides of the neighborhood’s pedestrian-only streets are painted with topical oeuvres ranging from political statements to commentaries on life in general. As you wander about, you’ll also see artisans in galleries or outside at tables that seem to blend with the surrounding street art. Look through gates and up on the roofs to find treasures that are equally surprising.

Pro Tips: It’s especially crowded by the student-filled Plaza Chorro de Quevedo and the cobblestoned side streets can be a mecca for pick-pockets. I recommend signing up for the Bogotá Graffiti Tour . The guide will safely lead you on a 2.5-hour walk offering insight into the city’s political and social issues while explaining the differences between vandalism and art.

Bogotá’s coffee culture, street food, traditional dishes, and higher-end restaurants give you a variety of choices to keep you energized.

5. La Puerta De La Catedral

An 18th-century building formerly used as a women’s college and seat of the archbishop is the location of the two-level La Puerta de la Catedral restaurant where you can sample traditional Colombian dishes. Arepas , tamales , and the combination-plate bandeja paisa are highlights on a humongous menu demonstrating the country’s Caribbean and Latin influences. Be sure to try ajiaco — Bogotá’s signature shredded chicken soup dressed up with potatoes, avocado, capers, corn, and cream.

6. Andrés D.C.

A mix of a nightclub, bachelor party, and steakhouse, the Andrés D.C. Zona T location is loud, large, and fun. Be prepared for an unforgettable experience that’s anything but calm. There’s live music, dancing, and a steady buzz. Servers and troubadours provide ongoing entertainment as well. Order chicharrones (“pork rinds”) or empanadas as starters and enjoy a steak and a bottle of wine. The labyrinth of rooms sprawls over four floors cheekily named Infierno, Tierra, Purgatorio, and Cielo.

7. Ants And Arepas

Yes, ants. More about texture than taste, these protein-rich insects ( hormigas ) are sold crispy from pushcarts and roving street vendors. If big-butted ants aren’t your thing, opt for a cheese-filled arepa pastry made from ground corn. At the minimum, take a photo of each.

8. Restaurante Leo

Zona G’s high-end Restaurante Leo is all about connecting with the bounty of the country. Sourcing ingredients from the rainforest to the desert, Chef Leonor Espinosa creates eccentric tasting menus of small plates that comingle “biocultural” tastes of the campo with textures of the ciudad . In contrast to simple ajiaco or arepas, Leo is Colombian gastronomy. However, one of Espinosa’s favorite dishes — seared albacore tuna with long pepper and molasses — does incorporate ants, using them as a crust.

9. El Aquelarre

The theme of this multi-room restaurant is magic mixed with witchcraft ( brujeria) . The menu is a voyage to another world featuring fusion dishes from different regions of Colombia. Try unique creations like karma de chicharrones or costa magica , a fantastical preparation of ceviche. El Aquelarre also recalls bruja -related events, like the Salem witch trials, on their creative drink menu. There’s also live music on weekends.

10. Coffee And Chicha

Taking advantage of the country’s pre-eminence in coffee growing, Bogotá tempts with many fragrant java bars. In La Candelaria, you’ll find fair-trade coffee used in lattes at the Cacao & Coffee House as well as tinto — the traditional black coffee served in Colombia. Santa Maria Café offers 60 versions of coffee drinks and another favorite, chicha , an alcoholic beverage made from corn. For a full chicha tasting, visit La Chicheria at Mercado La Concordia .

Bogotá is a city to be viewed on high as well as at ground level.

11. Monserrate

For a striking elevated view of the city, take the funicular to the peak of Cerro de Monserrate. Dress warmly and prepare yourself for a crush of tourists ascending 10,000 feet. You’ll note the energetic climbers below, but it’s best to secure your space indoors and save your energy for a walk around the top of the mountain, where a beautiful church and the city panorama await.

Pro Tip: Weather conditions can cancel rides to the top of the mountain. Be sure to check before you go.

12. La Ruta De La Esperanza

Taking cues from Medellin’s Comuna 13 reinterpretation project, La Ruta de la Esperanza takes you to Ciudad Bolívar in the uplands of southern Bogotá. Following the “Route of Hope,” you’ll see the remarkable “in-progress” transformation of three neighborhoods through art, education, and transportation alternatives. Visitors board an ultra-modern TransMiCable car to a small museum at the Mirador del Paraiso station, where the project is explained. Then, it’s up to you to explore the area and its evocative murals, painted homes, shops, and multiple viewpoints.

Pro Tip: Show your support of the community by dining in one of the small, family-run restaurants like Pescaderia WaWanco Chocoano.

13. Santuario Nacional De Nuestra Señora Del Carmen

While not a view per se, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Carmen is worth a visit to admire its candy-cane-striped exterior and interior. The Florentine Gothic design is stunning.

Bogotá’s range of accommodations reflects the diversity of its population and visitors. While some prefer luxury, others prefer authenticity. Here are two of my favorites illustrating those options.

14. Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogotá

The five-star Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogotá prides itself on offering impeccable service. In a prime location near the Zona G and walkable to shopping as well, the hotel combines French and Spanish architectural influences and incorporates the remnants of a Colonial convent. Rooms are modern and the beautiful Castañyoles restaurant serves all-day dining in a greenhouse setting.

15. Hotel De La Opera

With a history including a window escape by Simón Bolívar (he was chased by political enemies), this charming boutique hotel sits in the middle of La Candelaria. It’s located next to Teatro Colón and a few blocks from Bogotá’s museums, markets, and the architecture-and-pigeon-rich Plaza de Bolívar. Hotel de la Opera occupies two interconnected buildings, one furnished in Colonial style and the other having a more modern ambiance. The hotel includes a spa, the La Scala restaurant for breakfast, El Mirador for lunch and dinner, and a cozy bar for a late-night refresher.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The 6 Best Hotels in Bogotá

skyline of Bogotá, Colombia, with the city in the foreground and mountains in the background

Most travelers only spend a day or two in Bogotá . It’s not considered a highlight of Colombia and usually gets overlooked by most travelers.

I think that’s a mistake.

I actually loved my time in Bogotá. The city hasn’t seen as much gringofication as other cities in the country, so it felt the most Colombian to me. I even ended up staying longer than intended because I liked it so much!

However, where you stay in the city (and the hotel you stay in) will greatly impact your trip. Not all parts of the city are safe, and not all hotels here are created equal.

To help you make the most of your visit, here’s my list of the best hotels in Bogotá:

1. Magdalena Guest House

Simple room at Magdalena Guest House in Bogota, Colombia, with a double bed, wooden wardrobe, window, and hammock strung across the room

The rooms are basic and minimally decorated yet cozy, with parquet floors and unique art on the walls. The bathrooms are where the rooms really shine though. I love the brightly colored tiled floors and walk-in showers. The water is always hot and has good pressure (not always the case in this neighborhood). There are free toiletries too, and the beds are really comfortable. All of the main things to do in Bogotá are within walking distance, so if you want to spend a lot of your time seeing the sights, stay here.

Book here!

2. HAB Hotel Bogotá

Historic brick mansion, with an arched stone entryway and windows, home of HAB Hotel Bogotá in Colombia

The spacious rooms have hardwood floors and huge windows that let in a lot of light (though I appreciate that there are blackout curtains for when you want to block it out). All rooms feature high-quality mattresses, a desk, minibar, flatscreen TV, and a safe. The sleek bathrooms are covered in stunning black tile and include complimentary luxury toiletries. It’s a calm oasis in one of the city’s coolest neighborhoods.

3. Casa Legado

A light-filled guest room with floral wallpaper, a fireplace, hardwood floors, desk, and crisp white queen bed at Casa Legado in Bogotá, Colombia

I especially love all the perks here. There’s complimentary breakfast, bikes for guests’ use, a tranquil inner courtyard, and a tour desk to help you organize activities. I’d stay here if you’re a foodie looking for luxury, as this neighborhood has the highest concentration of fine-dining restaurants in the city. It’s also one of the safest districts.

4. Avani Royal Zona T Bogotá Hotel

King-sized bed in a guest room with a wall painted with florals, hardwood floors, and a large window bench at Avani Royal Zona T hotel in Bogotá, Colombia

There’s also a fitness center; a mouthwatering buffet breakfast with fresh fruit, bread, meats, and granola; and a very attentive staff who will ensure you have a comfortable stay. It’s also pet friendly and has free on-site parking. You really can’t beat the combination of amenities and location here.

5. Hotel 5 Elementos Apartasuites

Simple guest room with a double bed in front of an exposed brick wall at Hotel 5 Elementos Apartasuites in Bogotá, Colombia

The complimentary breakfast is great, and I especially like that they make eggs to order. There’s also a fitness center on-site, as well as a business center and a relaxing outdoor garden. It’s not a super central location, but it’s easy to get downtown and to the airport from here. Overall, it’s a great choice for families or groups who want more space.

6. Grand Hyatt Bogotá

A large guest room at the Grand Hyatt in Bogotá, Colombia, with wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows with views over the city and mountains

The rooms and suites are bright and airy thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. I love that every room has an epic view, either overlooking the Andes or the city itself. They boast a contemporary, minimal design, and include a desk, Nespresso coffee maker, minifridge, 50” flatscreen TV, and a safe. The bathrooms are huge, with double sinks, a marble bathtub, and a shower with excellent water pressure. The only downside to this hotel is that it’s a bit far out of the historic center (it’s located in the business district about a 20-minute Uber ride away). But if you want luxury, this is the hotel for you.

Bogotá is one of my favorite cities in Colombia. It’s worth taking the time to explore. And by staying in one of the hotels above, you’ll ensure you have a fun, safe, and affordable stay in Colombia’s vibrant capital city.

From your experience, would I have time to exit the terminal to meet a friend at the airport entrance, even if just for 10 minutes, and go all the way through passport control again and security?

This is a popular topic so I made a post about it: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294073-i1708-k14312679-BOG_Int_Airport_Transit_Time_Report-Colombia.html

It largely will depend on the immigration time both coming and going but if you land on time and everything goes normal then I think you should be able to. If it were me, I would do it. A question I have though is if it's all on one ticket and your bags are checked through because if not then you will need to exit anyways.

Possible yes, advisable no but who are we to say give it a try and say hi to your friend, heck I have taken at times in my life enormous risks for less of a reward.

Bogota Hotels and Places to Stay

Mexico City is just the beginning. Here are 11 other cities at risk of running out of water.

  • Mexico City may run out of drinking water by the end of this month.
  • Water scarcity is a worldwide problem that many other countries are already facing.
  • Often, the problem lies in how the water is managed rather than how much is available.

Mexico City is on the brink of a water catastrophe. Experts predict that the city of 8.8 million people could run out of drinking water this month.

But Mexico City is not the first city with a water crisis and it won't be the last. As global temperatures rise, it disrupts the atmosphere's natural circulation of water on Earth — what's called the hydrological cycle.

"With every degree of global warming , the hydrological cycle will also intensify leading to more water crises," Aditi Mukherji, director of the Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Impact Action Platform of the CGIAR, told Business Insider.

But Mukherji said the biggest factor that makes a city vulnerable isn't climate change, it's water management.

"It's not so much about the absolute quantity of the water per se, but it's about how the available water is distributed," she said, adding that "water scarcity at the end of the day boils down to issues of policies and governance."

Here are 11 other cities at high risk of running out of water. Many are located in the 25 most water-stressed countries worldwide, according to the World Resources Institute .

"Even a short-term drought puts these places in danger of running out of water and sometimes prompts governments to shut off the taps," Liz Saccoccia, a water scarcity associate with WRI, told Business Insider via email.

Limassol, Cyprus

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~235,000

A drought is drying up dams and reservoirs on the island Cyprus this year. Near the city of Lissamol, the island's largest dam is dropping to a third of full capacity, The Cyprus Mail reported.

The sunny island is a popular tourist destination. It's also one of the countries most at risk for extreme water stress due to droughts and a limited water supply.

Droughts have caused water shortages before, NBC News reported. In 2018, officials realized the desalination plant that supplies Limassol needed to increase its capacity by 50% to make it through rainless stretches.

With droughts becoming more frequent, the island now relies on these desalination plants for most of its drinking water. However, it's a costly solution that takes a toll on the environment. Finding land on the island to construct new plants is also proving difficult.

Muscat, Oman

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~1.7 million

Most of Oman's drinking water comes from desalination plants. But these plants are susceptible to red tides, an algal bloom that contains harmful toxins.

One desalination plant just outside of Muscat, Oman's capital, had to temporarily stop production in 2023 due to an outbreak, the Muscat Daily reported. The water service asked customers to limit water use and tapped into emergency reserves.

As global temperatures climb, it could lead to more frequent algal blooms, and Oman has been getting warmer over the past couple of decades. One estimate predicted its heat waves could last nine months of the year by 2100. In 1990, they typically lasted less than 15 days.

While the region's rainfall is expected to decrease by 2080, climate change is also causing intensified downpours. A recent deluge killed 19 people in the country and interrupted water and wastewater systems.

Beirut, Lebanon

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~2.4 million

The 2020 explosion at a Beirut port caused billions in damage and escalated Lebanon's economic crisis. Water facilities faced steep fuel prices to power treatment plants.

As a result, UNICEF warned in 2021 that 4 million people across the country risked losing access to clean water .

While areas with Syrian refugees were the most vulnerable, the situation in Lebanon's capital city, Beirut, was also critical, Al Jazeera reported in 2021.

Currently, many of the country's facilities are old and in need of repair. An estimated 40% of the water they treat is lost to leaks and people illegally tapping into the supply.

In addition to infrastructure issues, the area has a limited source of fresh water. The Bisri Dam was supposed to offer a fix. However, environmental, archaeological, and other concerns made the project controversial, The LA Times reported in 2021.

The World Bank pulled funding from the project in 2020, leaving it in limbo and jeopardizing reliable water access for 1.6 million people in and around Beirut.

Kuwait City, Kuwait

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~3.3 million

Most of Kuwait's growing population lives in its capital, Kuwait City .

The country has never had much fresh water. There are no major rivers or lakes, and most of its groundwater is brackish or salty.

To supply drinkable water, the country uses desalination plants to remove salt from seawater. They provide 90% of Kuwait's industrial and residential water.

However, Derek Vollmer, director of Waterscapes at WWF, said desalination isn't a long-term solution to chronic water shortages.

Kuwait's desalination is enormously expensive and emits planet-warming greenhouse gases. Trying to supply more and more water to a growing population without conservation efforts is "unsustainable," according to a recent research article in the Water and Environment Journal .

Johannesburg, South Africa

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~5.5 million

It's not just Mexico City's taps that are running dry . Earlier this year in Johannesburg, residents protested against a water shortage that's left roughly half of the 5.5 million residents without running water or suffering water shortages for weeks, NPR reported .

South Africa's largest city gets most of its fresh water from the Vaal Dam, which holds more than 680 billion gallons of freshwater. In March, at the time of these protests, authorities said that South Africa's dams were full, CNN reported . And yet, the water supply to Johannesburg residents has been intermittent at best, with some homes going without water for five to seven days at a time, a resident told CNN.

The crisis stems not from a dwindling water supply, but from crumbling infrastructure , lack of maintenance, government corruption, and a growing population, CNN reported. Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has mostly denied a water crisis exists, and blames shortages on surging demand due to record-breaking heat and freak events like a lightning strike at a water pump station in early March, NPR reported.

Bogotá, Colombia

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~7.1 million

Last month, Vollmer visited Bogotà, where he's worked on water projects for several years. One reservoir was lower than he'd ever seen it.

Despite the lush forests surrounding the area, the city is in the midst of a water crisis. "There are occasional droughts, and there wasn't enough long-term planning for their water supply," Vollmer said.

In April, the city began rationing water usage in response.

While the current problem is El Niño-driven, AP News reported , the ecosystem that supplies 80% of the city's freshwater is in trouble. Called the páramos ecosystem, "it's made up of plants that kind of act like sponges," Vollmer said. The water the plants pull into the root system then trickles into reservoirs.

However, this ecosystem seems particularly vulnerable to rising worldwide temperatures, according to recent Penn State research . The páramos are in danger of shrinking by as much as half within the next 50 years.

Cairo, Egypt

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~9.5 million

Cairo's population has more than doubled in the last 40 years, straining its water supplies.

The government has had trouble providing poorer and rural communities access to drinkable water and has asked people to have fewer children to prevent further stress on its resources. But that won't solve the current water crisis.

During the summer, Cairo frequently faces water shortages. While upscale areas often have their water quickly restored, poorer neighborhoods sometimes lose access for weeks, one researcher found .

Most of the city's freshwater for irrigation and drinking comes from the Nile — the lifeblood of Egypt. But it's also full of heavy metals and microplastics .

Meanwhile, Ethiopia is building a hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile — a river that feeds into the Nile, delivering over half of Egypt's water. Egyptians are worried blocking the Blue Nile's flow could further reduce their water supply.

By 2030, Egypt may need to import more water than it takes from the Nile, something the country has never faced before, according to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Jakarta, Indonesia

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~10.6 million

Jakarta faces the Java Sea and experiences drenching monsoons . "But they also have water shortages," Vollmer said. That's because of pollution and contamination.

In 2021, seven out of 10 households in Indonesia had E.coli-contaminated water, according to the World Health Organization.

With over 10 million people living in an area only a little larger than Tucson, Arizona, it's difficult to keep Jakarta's rivers clean.

Nearly 20% of the island city's garbage finds its way to the waterways, The New York Times reported in 2016.

Meanwhile, Java, the island where Jakarta sits, is facing rising sea levels, which causes more floods. In turn, more debris ends up in the rivers and canals, worsening contamination.

Lahore, Pakistan

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~14 million

In late May, hundreds of people in Lahore, Pakistan were treated for heatstroke as temperatures topping 120 degrees Fahrenheit scorched the city, Euronews reported .

Lahore's chronic water shortage makes heatwaves like this one all the more deadly. Pakistan's second-largest city, home to over 14 million people , gets fresh water from its groundwater supply. But over the last 50 years, groundwater levels have been dropping by roughly 1.6 to 2.6 feet per year.

Meanwhile, increased rainfall driven by climate change has contaminated water supplies, putting even more strain on the country's freshwater resources, according to WWF.

As a possible solution to its water shortage, the city of Lahore is attempting to divert excess rainwater into the groundwater supply with managed aquifer recharge, which helps rainwater seep down to the water table. It's too soon to tell whether, or not, this will be effective.

Beijing, China

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~21.5 million

China's northern, capital city of Beijing has faced severe water shortages for years. The BBC reported in 2018 that city residents received about 38,000 gallons of fresh water per year — far less than the 132,000 gallons per year that the UN defines as severe water scarcity.

Climate change is partly to blame. Warming temperatures have led to fewer summer monsoons in China's northern and inland areas and more unreliable rainfall. In turn, this has created long-lasting dry spells like the city's 116-day drought from October 2017 to February 2018.

On top of that much of China's available freshwater is polluted. As of 2024, nearly half of the country's population does not have access to water that's safe to consume, and roughly 90% of the country's groundwater is contaminated by human and industrial waste, Earth.org reported .

Delhi, India

travel packages to bogota colombia

Population: ~33 million

In May, Delhi suffered record-breaking heat, with temperatures climbing as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit, the Hindustan Times reported .

This heat wave is pushing the city's water resources to the brink, and the Delhi government stated that they'll issue a fine of 2,000 rupees (roughly $24 USD) to anyone found using water for construction, washing their car, or overflowing water tanks.

A 2023 report from Harvard University found that 18% to 26% of Delhi's residents don't have access to piped water, and an estimated 29% don't have water in their households. People living in "unplanned colonies" — informal settlements built on land that isn't zoned for housing — are most impacted by these trends, the report stated.

India is among the most water-stressed countries in the world. Although it has 18% of the world's population, it only has 4% of its water resources. Estimates vary but anywhere from tens of millions to over 100 million Indians lack access to safe drinking water.

The country relies on the summer monsoon to replenish their water supply, but climate change is making it unpredictable, putting more stress on an already strapped system. Additionally, lack of regulation, over-privatization, general neglect, and government corruption have created a dire water shortage throughout the country, SIWI reported in 2018 .
