  • Nearby attractions and accommodations cater to the needs of cruise passengers.

History of Long Beach Cruise Terminal

The Long Beach Cruise Terminal is bustling with activity as Carnival cruise ships dock and passengers embark and disembark, surrounded by the iconic palm trees and the stunning backdrop of the Long Beach skyline

The Long Beach Cruise Terminal , a pivotal site for maritime leisure, harbors a rich past that intertwines with the iconic Queen Mary . Originally, the terminal area was renowned for housing the legendary ocean liner Queen Mary , which sailed the Atlantic from 1936 until her retirement in 1967. The ship remains permanently docked at the port, serving as a floating hotel and museum, as well as a striking historical landmark.

Adjacent to the Queen Mary lies the distinctive geodesic dome . This structure was added to the port's landscape in 1971 to house the Spruce Goose , the massive wooden airplane designed by Howard Hughes . While the avian giant would eventually relocate, the dome repurposed and now stands as the contemporary cruise facility for Carnival Cruise Line.

In the 1990s, Carnival identified the potential of Long Beach as a cruise hub and established what is now known as the Carnival Cruise Terminal . The terminal transformed from a mere tourist attraction into a bustling point of departure for thousands of sea voyagers each year.

The integration of these elements – a transatlantic liner turned hotel, an engineering spectacle turned cruise gateway, and the entrepreneurial spirit of a cruise company – has secured the Long Beach Cruise Terminal's status as a historical and functional gem of the California coast. The site consistently hosts Carnival's fleet, providing passengers with an experience steeped in history and innovation.

26 miles from the heart of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach is the gateway to the Pacific and the 2nd busiest container shipping port in the US.

More than 300 cruises a year sail from the Long Beach cruise port, mostly reaching destinations in the Mexico Riviera like Ensenada , Puerto Vallarta , and Cabo .  Some transpacific cruises will also port in Hawaii.

Long Beach Cruise Terminal is the Los Angeles departure and arrival port for Carnival Cruise Line. Other cruise lines use the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center in San Pedro , which is literally on the other side of the Los Angeles Harbor.

The Long Beach Cruise Terminal was inaugurated in 2003 for Carnival Cruise Line and is used exclusively for the line. The first thing you will notice at the port is the large Geodesic Dome which was a museum before being converted.

But what should you expect upon arriving in Los Angeles? Is there a place to park, or hotels to stay in? What is there to do for fun in the nearby area?

Keep reading. In this articled we will tell you everything you need to know about the Port of Long Beach so you can plan your cruise more efficiently to save money and have fun.

How to Get to The Long Beach Cruise Terminal

long beach california cruise terminal

The address for the Long Beach Cruise Terminal is 231 Windsor Way, Long Beach, CA 90802. If you are driving and using a mapping or navigation device, this is the address you will need to use.

Directions from the Los Angeles Airport & Long Beach Airport

If you’re driving from LAX, it should take you roughly 50 minutes to drive to the Long Beach Cruise Terminal. From the Long Beach Airport it should only be about 20 minutes.

To get there from LAX:

  • Get on The San Diego Freeway South (405 S)
  • Take that to the Long Beach Freeway South (710 S)
  • Continue down 710 South and follow the signs for the Queen Mary
  • Drive past the Queen Mary entrance, staying to the far right. This will put you into the lane for the Carnival Cruise terminal

Transportation Options to the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

long beach cruise

You can either drive to the port from where you live, or rent a car from the airport and drive it to the terminal.

Other travel options from either LAX or Long Beach airport are shuttles, private car service, Uber or Lyft, or getting a taxi.

There are four shuttle services and one bus service in the Long Beach area that serve all cruise terminals and airports.

Santa Barbara Airbus

This is both a shuttle and a bus service. They serve the Santa Barbara and LAX areas, as well as provide pickup and drop-off services for both the Long Beach Cruise Terminal and the San Pedro Cruise Terminal.

Reservations must be made over the phone ahead of time at either 805-964-7759 or 800-423-1618. You can only book cruise ship service for days when a cruise ship is actually arriving or departing.

SuperShuttle

SuperShuttle is a company that provides shuttle service for hotels and cruise ports all over the United States, including Long Beach, California.

Depending on when you’ll be travelling, you can easily get a private shuttle for up to 4 people for $45. Options may vary depending the time of year and day you’ll be needing service.

RapidShuttle 24/7

A service just like SuperShuttle, it’s best to book your shuttle online. Again, available cars and prices will vary depending on when you need a car.

Prime Time Shuttle

Prime Time Shuttle provides shuttle options (private or rideshare) all over the Southern California. They serve airports, cruise ports, convention centers, and various other locations.

Prime Time Shuttle is a service much like Uber or Lyft, but specifically for certain areas in Southern California.

Give them a call at 800-733-8267, or you can book or get a quote on their website.

Cruise Line Shuttles

Carnival Cruise Lines does provide a shuttle option to their passengers, but this is really only beneficial if you’re travelling alone.

Carnival charges $30 per person one day to ride in their shuttle from LAX and $23.50 from Long Beach Airport.

Again, if you’re travelling alone, this isn’t that bad, as you will only be paying about $47-$60 roundtrip. But say you’re travelling with a family of four. You’d be looking at paying roughly $188-$240 round trip, just for shuttle service.

If you’re looking for a great option for both convenience and price, using Uber or Lyft are going to be your best options.

You just book your ride on your smartphone, and the car arrives at the airport to pick you up and take you to the cruise terminal.

Cost estimates for Uber and Lyft are:

  • LAX – Long Beach Cruise Terminal: $37.30
  • Long Beach Airport – Long Beach Cruise Terminal: $14.04
  • LAX – Long Beach Cruise Terminal: $35-$42
  • Long Beach Airport – Long Beach Cruise Terminal: $15-$18

Taxis, much like Uber or Lyft, charge for the car rather than per person. Though they will cost a lot more than taking an Uber, they’re still a cheap and convenient option.

If you’re coming from Long Beach Airport, you’ll be charged a flat rate of $45 to the cruise terminal. From LAX, a taxicab may run you a little over $60.

Terminal Information

long beach cruise terminal inside

The Long Beach Cruise Terminal is only one terminal, and only Carnival Cruise ships use this terminal. The ships you will likely see going in and out of Long Beach are:

  • Carnival Imagination
  • Carnival Inspiration
  • Carnival Legend
  • Carnival Miracle
  • Carnival Panorama
  • Carnival Splendor

If you haven’t yet chosen your cruise and you need more information regarding costs and itineraries, go to the Carnival website.

Arrival Tips

At the terminal entrance there will be porters available to help you with your luggage and will direct you to the parking garage. Look for the folks wearing red caps – those are your porters.

If you arrive close enough to when your ship leaves, there will be ample seating available inside the terminal as you wait to board your ship.

However, arrive too early and you’ll have to sit outside and wait, which won’t be nearly as comfortable.

Cruisers can check-in and board between during a short window of time before their ship leaves. Departure times are different depending on which ship, so be sure to check your ticket to know when you should arrive for check-in and boarding.

long beach cruise ships

The terminal does have plenty of restrooms inside, and there are other restroom options outside. There is also free public Wi-Fi available.

There is no luggage storage available at the terminal, but you can arrange with Carnival head of time to check your baggage onto the ship early. Any carry-ons you have will need to stay with you until you board.

If you or someone in your group is going to need wheelchair assistance to ship, you will need to make arrangements with Carnival ahead of time, as the terminal does not provide wheelchair service.

Does the Long Beach Cruise Terminal Provide Parking?

Yes, there is parking at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal in their five-story, 1,450-space parking garage.

You don’t need to make any advanced reservations, and full payment will be due upon exiting the garage.

It costs $17 per day to park at the port. any oversized vehicles will be charged per space ($17) that their vehicle takes up. Handicap parking is also available, provided you have a valid permit.

For more information about parking, you can give them a call at 562-901-323.

There is also parking at the Port of Los Angeles, which is $18 per day for regular vehicles and $32 for oversized. However, if there’s ample enough parking at the Long Beach Terminal, parking across the harbor is not going to be in your best interest.

There is no off-site parking readily available, unless you arrive a day or so before your trip and stay at a hotel that provides parking for cruise passengers.

Hotels Near the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

There are many hotels near the Long Beach Cruise Terminal that specifically cater to guests to provide them not only with lodging and various amenities associated, but parking and shuttle service as well.

Editor’s note: My favorite place to stay when sailing out of Port of Long Beach is the iconic Queen Mary.  It’s so close to the port that the only shuttle you will need is your two legs.  The floating hotel is full of history and intrigue, and is the perfect way to start a cruise vacation.

See our video tour of Queen Mary below:

Using Uber & Lyft to Get to the Los Angeles & Long Beach Cruise Ports

In a region that’s almost as famous for its car culture as it is for Hollywood, there has been a huge change in how people get around Los Angeles… and it’s great news for cruise passengers.

Los Angeles and Long Beach Uber and Lyft

Years ago, your options to getting to the cruise ports in Los Angeles or Long Beach were to catch a taxi or schedule a private car. Today you can use a rideshare service. Namely: Uber and Lyft.

If you’re not familiar with these companies, the premise is simple. Drivers are everyday people, driving their personal automobiles (cars have to be in good condition and relatively new). Riders use an app on their smartphone to schedule a ride, make the payment, and rate their driver.

Drivers love it because it allows them to earn extra cash on their own schedule. Riders love it because it is fast to catch a ride from anywhere (literally thousands of drivers are in LA), and it is often much cheaper than a traditional cab.

Uber & Lyft Availability to the Cruise Port

Both Uber and Lyft are available throughout southern California. That means no matter where you are, you can catch a ride. This includes area airports such as Los Angeles International (LAX) and Long Beach Airport (LGB).

The pictures below show the service areas for the rideshare programs. As you can see, both operate in the entire region. And don’t worry if you are traveling from one shaded region to another. Rides can travel anywhere in the area.

Estimated Fares to the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach

So how much does it cost to take an Uber or Lyft to the Los Angeles and Long Beach cruise ships?

To give you an idea of how much Uber or Lyft would cost, we’ve rounded up some estimated fares between popular pickup locations and the cruise ports. We’ve also compared the fares to the cost of a taxi, based on searches from TaxiFareFinder.com

Keep in mind that the fares listed above are for one car, not per person. Regular Uber and Lyft are designed for up to four people, but remember to consider your luggage when going to the port. (For that reason, we suggest three to a car.)

If your entire group can’t fit into a small four-door sedan, then we suggest ordering an “XL” ride or going with two separate cars. Otherwise you might not all be able to fit. We’d suggest that three adults with luggage should fit fine in a regular Uber/Lyft.

Catching Uber/Lyft From Los Angeles Airports to the Cruise Ship

Most importantly, Uber and Lyft operate at all the airports in the area, including Los Angeles International (LAX), Ontario International Airport (ONT), John Wayne Airport (SNA), Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), and Long Beach Airport (LGB).

Depending on where you fly into, expect it to take about 30 minutes to over an hour to get to the cruise ship from the airport. Below are estimated times for normal traffic.

Ride Times to Port of LA | Port of Long Beach:

  • Los Angeles International (LAX): 35 minutes | 40 minutes
  • Ontario International Airport (ONT): 70 minutes | 70 minutes
  • John Wayne Airport (SNA): 50 min | 45 minutes
  • Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR): 70 minutes | 70 minutes
  • Long Beach Airport (LBG): 25 min | 20 min

Note on Catching Uber or Lyft From Los Angeles International (LAX)

LAX-it sign at the airport

While you can catch a ride from all major airports in the area, LAX has a little different pick-up procedure than you might be used to.

Because of the airport’s size, congestion is a major issue. That’s why the airport has put in a special spot for catching Uber and Lyft called “LAX-it” (pronounced L-A-Exit). Put simply, you’ll catch a shuttle or walk to a dedicated lot for ridesharing and taxis.

By moving the pick-up area for rides to a separate lot, the hope is that it will help to alleviate some of the airport’s notoriously bad traffic. Depending on which terminal you arrive, it can take about 10-15 minutes to take the shuttle or walk to the LAX-it lot. To take the free shuttle, you simply look for the LAX-it sign at the lower level of arrivals.

How do I coordinate Uber/Lyft for 10 people? From Long Beach Airport to Carnival Cruise Terminal. Mid December — 12/23/23. Thank you.

You’ll need 2-3 rides. It’s likely easiest to simply have a couple of people call a ride at the same time and split up when the cars arrive. Not sure if Uber/Lyft has some sort of solution on their app for this type of situation.

LAX to San Pedro Port? how much will it cost at about 2 pm?

Need ground transportation from escondido to long beach pier for 6 people. I like a fare price.

Where to wait for an Uber/Lyft in LAX to Carnival Cruise Port? ANd, will either rides drop you off right in the parking for Carnival?

LAX has a new lot where Uber/Lyft pick up called LAX-It. Both of the services will drop you off at the port.

It is now August, 2019. Are the Lyft and Uber fares, above, still valid?

Rates are now a little bit higher — $5-10 in most cases.

When disembarking at the World Cruise Port, is there a specific place to wait after you’ve placed your Uber/Lyft order?

Require an estimated Uber cost Dana on Mission Resort San Diego to San Pedro cruise terminal Tuesday 9am 11 Sep.am

Going from San Diego to the San Pedro Terminal will be pricey. The estimated fare look to be about $170.

Cool Cruiser

I'm looking to drop off a rental car near the port before Carnival Pride cruise on 5/27. Any suggestions? So far I'm renting a car at LAX and dropping off at Long Beach Airport and taking a cab to the port. Anything better than that? I was hoping to avoid the cab ride. I know in Miami you can drop off the at the port or at least take a shuttle from the rental agency. So far I have not been able to find a rental in LA that does that service.:)

We will be sailing out of Long Beach on the Pride next Jan. and are flying in the day before and renting a car from Hertz at Lax. and dropping it off at their downtown office at 555 East Ocean Blvd. Unfortunately their office is closed on sunday so we have to drop it off on saturday by 5 pm. Still no big deal as we'll still have the car for about 6 hours at half the price of a cab ride and since we're staying on the Queen Mary on saturday night we really can do without it. My ta has told me it will be less than $10 for a cab ride back to the Queen, but I'll try and see if they'll shuttle us back for free since it's so close.

You can rent from Enterprise at LAX, and drop it at their office on Ocean Blvd in Long Beach a couple of blocks from the Port, they will take you to the port from there.

  • Casino: Cash out any casino chips or slips as the Casino Cashier Desk is closed on debarkation morning.
  • If you registered your Sail & Sign account with a credit/debit card, your account will still be active on the morning of debarkation. For credit card accounts, billing is submitted to the your credit card company. Your bank places a hold on all onboard purchases. Even though your account will be settled with us, it is up to your bank to release any holds and it may take 3-5 days or more.
  • For cash accounts, if you have exceeded the amount of your cash deposit, you must pay the outstanding balance at Guest Services by the last evening of the cruise so you can disembark the ship without any delay. Any refundable overages greater than $10 USD will be refunded via check mailed within 7 days after the cruise to your home address on file. Overages less than $10 USD will be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (excluding Australia ships). If you wish to have the full overage in cash, you may retrieve it from one of the Sail & Sign Kiosks or Guest Services.
  • Liquor Purchases: For cruise durations 6 days and more, liquor purchased from the gift shop or from ashore that was held for safekeeping will be delivered to your stateroom after 7:00pm, the evening prior to debarkation (some exceptions may apply). For cruise durations 5 days and less, liquor will be available for collection in a designated lounge on the morning of debarkation. Guests cruising back-to-back will collect all items at the end of the 2nd cruise.

Digital Debark - Debarkation Options Digital Debark is our debarkation procedure using the Carnival Hub app, in order to help streamline the process and minimize crowds while still giving guests plenty of options for how they choose to leave the ship at the end of their cruise vacation.

  • Before 1:00pm on the last day of the cruise, log into the HUB app and navigate to the last day of 'My Planner', accessible via the main menu, and select 'Schedule Debarkation'.
  • You will be guided to select your preferred debarkation option: 'Express Debarkation' or 'Checked Luggage'. Then select all members of your party and select a suitable time for you and your party to debark the ship.
  • If you choose 'Checked Luggage', select the number of tags you require (one tag per bag). Luggage tags will be delivered to your stateroom the last day of the cruise.
  • Once you have completed 'Schedule Debarkation', the confirmation will remain available in your planner. Upon arrival to the home port, listen to the Cruise Director's announcements and follow the debarkation notifications coming through on your HUB app.

Option 1: Express Debarkation - Carry Off Your Luggage (Self-Assist) If you would like to disembark early and are able to carry your own luggage off the ship, this option is for you. This option is a great for anyone with an early flight back home.

You do not need to put your luggage outside of your cabin the last evening of your cruise. Keep all your belongings with you and on the last morning of the cruise, you will be among the first to debark the ship, as soon as the vessel has cleared immigration and debarkation can begin. Please know that in addition to carrying off your own bags, there may be escalators, stairs, and lines to contend with.

Option 2: Checked Luggage

  • All original Carnival luggage tags need to be removed.
  • Each tag needs to be filled out and attached to every piece of luggage.
  • The tear-off section needs to be kept as reference.
  • Do not pack medicine or other important documents in your luggage. Ensure you keep out your Sail & Sign Card, proof of citizenship and photo ID.
  • Make sure you leave out an outfit for the last day. In the morning.
  • Your luggage will be collected by our staff and placed into a secure area on board for offloading upon arrival in the morning.
  • You will be called to the gangway by the scheduled time you selected.
  • Your luggage will be waiting for you in the baggage claim area of the terminal building, separated by zone number.
  • You must personally locate your luggage and either carry it out or seek the assistance of a porter. The customary tip is $1 USD per bag.

Taking Care of Business

  • Sail & Sign Cash Account: If not done so alreadly, please settle any outstanding account balances with Guest Services before 8:00am so you can disembark without delay.
  • Debarkation Morning Purchases: You may use your Sail & Sign card or personal credit card for purchases.
  • Liquor Purchases: For cruise durations 5 days and less, liquor will be available for collection in a designated lounge on the morning of debarkation. Guests cruising back-to-back will collect all items at the end of the 2nd cruise.
  • The Photo Gallery is open for last minute purchases until 8:30am.
  • Carnival airport transportation tickets are available for purchase on the Carnival HUB App or at the Carnival Adventures or Guest Services desks until arrival.

Waiting for Departure

  • We kindly ask that you vacate your stateroom before 8:30am. Please double check and make sure you have removed all valuables from your stateroom safe as well as personal items from closets and drawers.
  • The main dining room serves breakfast 6:30am-8:00am (open seating)
  • The lido restaurant serves breakfast 6:00am-9:00am
  • Promenade Cafe (JavaBlue) is open 6:00am-9:00am
  • You will need to select a location on the ship while waiting to be called for departure. Each ship will provide a list of designated areas (lounges and outdoor space) for guests to wait; in the interest of safety, guests should not wait in the stairwells or lobby area.
  • Once the ship has cleared Immigrations and debarkation starts, Carry off guests will be among the first to to be alerted via notification through the app that they can leave the ship. Guests will proceed to the gangway with their luggage.
  • Guests who require special assistance will disembark with their luggage when their group is called through the HUB app notifications and will be escorted off the ship into the baggage claim area. Unfortunately, due to port regulation, wheelchair escorts are not allowed to assist with the handling or collection of luggage at the terminal building.
  • Guests who have pre-purchased a shore excursion that includes return transfers to the airport will meet in a designated area and guided to the gangway as a group.
  • We generally clear the ship of all guests approximately three hours after the published arrival time in the home port.

Debarking the Ship

  • Sail & Sign card
  • U.S Citizens will need Travel Documentation (passport, birth certificate and photo I.D, etc)
  • Non-U.S Citizens will need Travel Documentation (passport) and required forms and documentation required by U.S Immigrations.
  • In order to 'check out' of the ship's security system, each guest will need to present their Sail & Sign card as they leave the ship.
  • In nine U.S homeports, guests debarking the ship at the end of a closed loop cruise will pause at a kiosk with a camera and take a photo. Within seconds, the image is biometrically compared to their passport or visa photo to verify the guest’s identity. U.S travelers and select foreign nationals who prefer to opt out of the facial biometric process can simply request a manual document check from a CBP Officer.
  • The U.S homeports using this secure, streamlined technology, include Miami, Port Canaveral, Tampa, Jacksonville, New York, Baltimore, Mobile, Galveston and Long Beach.
  • Baggage Claim: Guests will proceed to the baggage claim area of the cruise terminal. Please wait for your zone number to be called otherwise you luggage will not be available in the terminal. Luggage will be grouped by zone number for easy location. Guests should double check to ensure they have claimed their own luggage as well as all of their bags.
  • All confiscated items will be returned to guests in the terminal by the shoreside security upon debarking the vessel.
  • U.S Customs Border and Protection (CPB) Luggage Inspection: Prior to exiting the cruise terminal, guests will proceed to the CBP area - this is a formal but brief check of luggage and an oral declaration of merchandise purchased.
  • Guests who have purchased our optional transfers must proceed to the buses outside the cruise terminal with their luggage for transportation to the airport.
  • Taxis and other alternative transportation services will be located outside the cruise terminal.
  • Guests who purchased shore excursions must ensure their luggage is on the same bus on which they are traveling.
