The Ideal Tour Divide Drivetrain? Ultra-wide Range GRX 2×11

In this video Neil walks us through his ultimate Tour Divide drivetrain, a 585%, ultra-wide range 2×11 using an 11-42 cassette with a Shimano GRX 815 or 810 derailleur. We tested three different cassette ranges and the limits of the GRX derailleurs in this how-to video…

PUBLISHED May 6, 2020

In 2015, I lined up for the Tour Divide with an 11-speed drivetrain consisting of an 11-40 cassette paired with a 34-tooth chainring combo. Albeit pretty narrow, it was a workable setup for the mostly well-graded gravel route. However, there are a few steep stretches where having an extra low granny gear would be great, and a solid high gear is a must when racing. While preparing to take on the Tour Divide again this year, I made wide-range gearing a priority. The ideal rig I envisioned would have a 2×11 drivetrain consisting of a 46/30-tooth chainring combo paired with either an 11-40 or 11-42-tooth cassette. That would enable a slightly better granny gear and the high gearing would undoubtedly make for better sprint speeds. All that said, the Salsa Cutthroat is a drop-bar bike and its stock GRX drivetrain is limited to an 11-34T cassette. So I started tinkering. In this video, you’ll find out how I setup 11-40 and 11-42T cassettes to work with the GRX 815 and 810 derailleurs…

Customer Reviews

Pros: Looked good at first.....after couple of months the zipper went bad...not running properly, opening in the corners.... Cons: No international service...very bad quality price wise.

Pros: Well built and designed Cons: Not yet

Pros: Luggage Pros were great! Did not realize we had to buy a battery pack for the suitcase but got a coupon for 30% off. Should notify people that not part of suitcase. But, beautiful case and so light weight. Cons: No charger

Pros: I love how much I can fit into this case and how sturdy it is completely full.

Pros: Fits midway between 18" executive and 26" big bag - just enough for 4-day business trips. Suiter keeps a blazer & 2-3 pairs trousers from getting too wrinkled. Well made. The outer phone charger pocket is useful. Cons: Wish the pockets were detachable.

World's top golfer arrested

The latest on the massive solar storm

By Angela Fritz, Elise Hammond and Chris Lau, CNN

Incredible lighthouse picture from Maine

From CNN's Chris Lau

A long-exposure photo shows the aurora borealis over Portland, Maine, on May 10.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Watch the full interview with Williamson here .

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

By CNN's Chris Lau

The northern lights can be seen from Eaton Rapids, Michigan, on May 10.

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle."

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

In Pictures: Auroras light the sky during rare solar storm

From CNN Digital's Photo Team

The northern lights glow in the night sky in Brandenburg, Germany, on May 10.

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun are creating dazzling auroras across the globe .

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

See more photos of the aurora from tonight.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

Bill Nye the Science Guy speaks to CNN on Friday, May 10.

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

From CNN's Angela Fritz

An infrared satellite image taken around 10:30 p.m. ET.

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour.

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

AAA says 2024 to be second highest Memorial Day travel forecast since 2000

May 13 (UPI) -- The American Automobile Association, better known as AAA, on Monday released data which estimates nearly 44 million American travelers will leave town in what will be the second highest Memorial Day travel forecast since 2000 when data was first available.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said in a release.

AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will go 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which they said was a 4% increase from 2023 and comes close to matching the record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers in 2005.

"We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead," the AAA executive added.

AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this Memorial Day weekend, a 4.8% increase over last year and a 9% jump compared to 2019.

"This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005," AAA advised travelers.

In addition, AAA said nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation which includes buses, cruise ships and trains, a 5.6% increase compared to 2023.

AAA defines this year's Memorial Day holiday travel period as the five-day period from May 23 to Monday, May 27.

Last year, AAA said that it was also expecting an uptick in travel over the 2023 Memorial Day weekend, although at the time road trips were reported to have not bounced back to pre-pandemic levels despite a temporary slide in gas prices.

But road travelers are also being advised to plan travel times accordingly to avoid and lessen traffic congestion.

"Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal," said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, who likewise advised travelers to "stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary."

AAA noted "the wildcard" remains the cost of oil because, unlike last year, there are now additional world military conflicts that could roil and impact the oil market.

In 2023, AAA projected 42.3 million Americans would travel 50 miles or more to a destination which was up 2.7 million people -- or 7% -- from 2022 the year prior.

But the price of gas this Memorial Day, however, is expected to be similar to last year when the national average was roughly $3.57, according to AAA.

"Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks," AAA said. "Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway."

But travel insiders have predicted that in 2024 people will plan more solo adventure trips, travel to Europe more and try out new things like 3D printed food.

This comes as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in early April that it will increase travel fees for some of the most well-known Trusted Travel Programs.

A recent American Express Travel report found that travelers are more focused on creating the right itineraries for their vacations, leaning towards sporting events, unusual adventures and solo travels that are taken on a whim.

However, the cost of traveling, including airfare and food costs is likely to keep rising with some companies focusing more on affordability as inflation is viewed as slowly getting under control.

The AAA travel statistics also come days after Illinois-based grocery chain Aldi announced that they have dropped the price of over 250 grocery items in stores nationwide to help customers fight "stubborn inflation" and better enjoy the summer.

A traveler receives assistance at an information window in Grand Central Terminal in New York City, Dec. 2023. Around 115 million people in the U.S. were expected to travel by car or plane over the 10-day holiday period at the time by John Angelillo/UPI

NFL schedule 2024: Full list of how many miles each team will travel and time zones they will cross

A look at the nfl travel data for the 2024 season.

travel 2 x11

All 32 NFL teams will have to travel at least eight times during the 2024 regular season, but some will travel more and much farther. Teams will have to travel cross country, while some will go off to Germany and England. Have you ever wondered how many miles each NFL team travels, and how many time zones they cross through? Well, that info has been put together for the upcoming season and released prior to the official NFL schedule release.

According to Bookies.com , the Los Angeles Chargers  will travel the most miles of any team this season -- a whopping 26,803 miles. The Chargers will also travel through the most time zones: 36. As for the team that will travel the least amount of miles in 2024, that honor belongs to Dan Quinn's  Washington Commanders .

The mileage for this list was calculated by using the linear air distance between each stadium on Google Earth. Check out the full list below:

X-Men ’97 Episode 10’s Ending Cameos Just Set Up a Huge Season 2 Story

The X-Men '97 season 1 finale welcomes En Sabah Nur and Mother Askani in its final minutes. Here's how these cameos and surprise reveals set up season 2.

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.

Well, X-Men ’97 ‘s finale didn’t end with Onslaught or Ultimatum (thank goodness), but it did go out with quite the bang. The heroes stop Bastion’s assault with the help of Jean Grey’s Phoenix Force, depowering Mister Sinister at the same time. Although the battle sends Asteroid M crashing toward the Earth, Professor X appealed to Magneto’s better angels once again and convinced him to prevent a global catastrophe, apparently killing himself and the X-Men in the process.

But, as Bishop tells Forge, “This ain’t our first time at the ‘X-Men are Dead’ rodeo.”

Sure enough, the final minutes of the finale confirm the X-Men still live, albeit in very different times. With half the team in ancient Egypt and the other half in a ravaged far future, they have their work cut out for them in season two. What does it all mean?

Ad – content continues below

En Sabah Nur aka Apocalypse

Although confused by their sandy new whereabouts, Rogue and Nightcrawler recognize injustice when they see it. So they both jump right in to help a mystery man defend himself from a masked mob surrounding him. When the mob subsides, the man pulls down his face covering and introduces himself as En Sabah Nur.

If those pretty purple lips didn’t give it away, En Sabah Nur is Apocalypse , the evil mutant who becomes a thorn in the X-Men’s side in the present. Where’s his cool armor? And what’s he doing in ancient Egypt?

As comic fans know, En Sabah Nur was born in Egypt thousands of years ago as the first mutant (or one of the first, depending on the writer/definition). Exiled for his unusual appearance, Nur adopted a survival of the fittest worldview, which only intensified as he grew and his mutant ability to control his molecules (simply put, shape change) developed. Nur’s conquests drew the attention of the Celestials (remember them from Eternals ? Because Kevin Feige doesn’t), who gave him advanced technology and set him to further human evolution.

Nur took the name Apocalypse and gathered four horsemen—Death, War, Famine, and Pestilence—to cull the weak and empower the strong. Of course, Apocalypse lost fairly regularly in the comics. But, between his Celestial armor, his mutant ability, and the fact that he is one of the immortal mutants known as Externals, Apocalypse simply goes into regeneration when defeated, waiting to arise and begin the process again.

The look of En Sabah Nur in X-Men ’97 suggests that he’s still early in his campaign, not yet sure about his mission. Will the fact that Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Magneto already know too well the villain En Sabah Nur will eventually become tempt them to change the past? Will they follow in the footsteps of their teacher and show him a better way?

As with all things involving Apocalypse, time will tell…

Speaking of time, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the other X-Men arrive in the far future, which also looks like sandy ruins. There, they are the outnumbered ones, surrounded by ragged figures with advanced weaponry. Their hooded leader comes forth and introduces herself as “Mother Askani,” a name that means nothing to the vast majority of TV viewers and everything to a handful of comic book nerds like me.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Viewers probably recognize the boy who comes to greet Scott and Jean as Nathan, Scott’s son with Jean’s clone and the future Cable . However, Nathan isn’t the only Summers scion present in that meeting. If the lines on her face didn’t give it away, Mother Askani is actually Rachel Summers, also sometimes known as Phoenix.

Rachel has made a few appearances in X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97 , most recently in the vision of the future that Cable shared with the present-day X-Men. Rachel is the daughter of Scott and Jean, who possesses her mother’s amazing psychic abilities. She hails from the future seen in Days of Future Past , where she has been enslaved and used as a “hound,” a mutant who hunts other mutants.

In the comics, Rachel makes her way to the present and joins the X-Men and, eventually, the European team Excalibur . While serving in Excalibur, her sacrifice sends her to a far off future, one ravaged by an evil warlord. Rachel finds shelter with some rebels, who dub her “Askani” which means outsider. Over the decades, Rachel gathers others to fight against the warlord, forming the Clan Askani.

Rachel gets a powerful new addition to her clan when she pulls her time-displaced half-brother Nathan to her time. There, she cares for Nathan but also prepares him as a warrior who will be the final undoing against the warlord, a mission he carries with him when he becomes Cable.

The name of that warlord who controls the future: Apocalypse. The “something” that pulled the X-Men into these points in time may very well be Rachel, who also has the Phoenix Force and could be gathering her family to help her take down Apocalypse once and for all.

The Post-Credit Scene and What These X-Men ’97 Finale Cameos Mean for Season 2

Like a true Marvel property, the finale of X-Men 97 ‘s first season features a post-credit sequence. Back in the present, Apocalypse himself makes an appearance in the ruins of Genosha . Like the rest of us, he’s dismayed by all the destruction he sees. Toward the end of one of his patented grandiloquent monologues, Apocalypse picks up one of Gambit’s charred playing cards and observes, “So much death.”

Of course, where most of us viewers look on the rubble with a sense of regret, Apocalypse seems happy about what he’s found. That’s because, for him, Gambit is most useful in death.

Remember how Apocalypse has four horsemen to do his bidding? In 2006’s X-Men #183 by Peter Milligan and Salvador Larroca, Apocalypse unveils his latest Horseman, Remy LeBeau, who has become Death. Remy joins three other one-time allies—the mutant Gazer becomes War, occasional X-Man Sunfire becomes Famine, and Magneto’s daughter Polaris, seen in shadow alongside Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in “Tolerance is Extinction Part Three,” claims the mantle of Pestilence.

Between the Remy tease and the X-Men re-introducing En Sabah Nur at different points in time, it’s clear that Apocalypse will be a major big bad for season two. Scott and Jean will continue to form their bond with Nathan, drawing from the great miniseries The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix , while Magneto and Rogue will have their anti-mutant concerns tested while they debate with Nur in Ancient Egypt.

Of course, there are still some dangling plot threads out there, too. We still haven’t seen Wolverine back in action without Adamantium , which means that season two will have to deal with Feral Wolverine . And did I mention that Wolverine also becomes Death of the Horsemen in the comics? When Apocalypse offers to restore his Adamantium? And then promptly sends Wolverine to recover the remains of Bastion? Seems like a potential season two plot thread.

Finally, there are the X-Men left behind, namely Forge. We find Forge in his workshop with the names and status of the missing mutants behind him, a bleak homage to the iconic cover of 1981’s Uncanny X-Men #141. He’s greeted by Bishop, who recruits Forge to help him find his missing colleagues.

As we’ve mentioned previously, X-Men ’97 also keeps dropping hints about X-Factor , a mutant team known for detective work, at least in some incarnations. Although Bishop isn’t normally a member of X-Factor in the comics, his sister Shard was at one point, along with Forge. In other words, we might finally see some version of X-Factor next season, doing their best to find their time-displaced friends.

And what about Onslaught ? We’ve been pushing the Onslaught theory pretty hard, so there’s a bit of egg on our faces after the ’90s baddie failed to show up in the finale when Xavier entered Magneto’s mind. But this might be a case of X-Men ’97 actually taking its time with a plot point and saving Onslaught for next season, as all of the set up remains in place.

Whatever happens, it will certainly mean the world of the X-Men will never be the same.

All the Other Big Marvel Cameos

Of course, X-Men ’97 has never limited its focus just to Marvel’s Merry Band of Mutants. As Bastion’s Prime Sentinels attacked and, later, Asteroid M plummeted toward Earth, the show checked in with others around the globe, giving us a look at a few familiar faces, albeit in sometimes different forms.

Daredevil gets in on the action, defending Hell’s Kitchen from Bastion’s attacks, as do the X-Men adjacent teens Cloak and Dagger. Dr. Stephen Strange uses magic on the operating table to care for victim, while Peter Parker and Mary Jane watch news coverage of Asteroid M in their civilian garb. Iron Man and Captain America stand by President Kelley as he consults with King T’Chaka about next steps, and we see his son T’Challa standing by Okoye while Wakanda waits to respond.

Once again, Silver Samurai looks stoically at the effects of Magneto’s powers, while Psylocke and Celia Reyes join Alpha Flight in Canada to plan their attack. And, as usual, Morph becomes the cameo machine, shifting into Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four to save himself and others from getting sucked out into space.

While it would be easy to dismiss these cameos as fun winks, they also show the larger scale the X-Men’s actions. Mutants, good and evil, influence the rest of the world, which is why the dream of Professor X is so important. X-Men ’97 ‘s first season tested that dream, but season two threatens to break it, as Apocalypse makes his play for control.

X-Men ’97 is now streaming on Disney+.

4 dead as severe storms hit Houston area; hundreds of thousands lose power in Texas

Emergency crews in southeast Texas were clearing debris and assessing flooding on Friday after powerful storms tore through the state , killing at least four people and knocking out power to nearly 800,000 customers.

The winds — which reached 100 mph — were reminiscent of 2008's Hurricane Ike , one of the costliest natural disasters in American history, Houston Mayor John Whitmire said in a briefing Thursday. A widespread 3 to 6 inches of rain fell north of Houston, with one of the highest totals reaching around 6.9 inches in 24 hours near Romayor.

The storm also battered New Orleans overnight, with severe thunderstorms and flooding possible again through Saturday morning, according to the local branch of the National Weather Service .

In Texas, the destruction was evident even before sunrise, with high winds tearing out windows of high-rise buildings in downtown Houston and inundating the region with flooding. Streets were littered with glass, electrical lines and other detritus.

A woman looks at the damage caused by fallen bricks in the aftermath of a severe thunderstorm Friday, May 17, 2024, in Houston. Image:

“I know that many people lived through, and are still living through, scary situations with the terrible strong winds that blew across our county tonight," Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said in a statement Friday morning.

"Damage assessments are ongoing, and we cannot know how long it will take to clear debris without those assessments completed, but from initial reports the debris looks very significant," Hidalgo said.

Classes were canceled for the 400,000 students in the Houston Independent School District.

Officials urged all but essential employees to work from home if possible, and the Houston Police Department told residents to avoid traveling downtown.

Two of the four people who died in Texas were killed by falling trees, while a third died when a crane blew over, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said at a news briefing. No information was given about the fourth. Whitmire said a possible fifth death is being investigated, but it’s not yet clear if it was related to the weather.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott thanked emergency personnel in a statement, saying work is ongoing to assist communities affected by the storms.

“Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives due to severe weather in Southeast Texas, and we remain in contact with local officials to do everything we can to protect Texans and help our communities recover,” Abbott said.

A Houston police officer walks back to his vehicle after clearing people away from a damaged tire shop Friday, May 17, 2024, in Houston.

At one point, more than 900,000 customers were without power statewide; that remained true for around 670,000 as of 3 p.m. CT,  according to poweroutage.us . Nearly all of those were in Houston’s Harris County.

Heat and humidity in the city will ramp up into the weekend, which could lead to health concerns if power is not restored quickly. Temperatures could be as high as 91 degrees with a heat index of 97.

Across Houston, photos and videos on social media showed intense flooding and downed trees, as well as toppled electrical towers and power lines .

In a video posted to Facebook , rain was seen leaking into Minute Maid Park, where the Houston Astros play. Another video showed baseball fans leaving the stadium amid the bad weather.

Strong winds appeared to have blown off roof panels at a Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston, a video posted to X showed. Other footage shared on the platform showed blown out windows in a building in the city's Wells Fargo Plaza.

Severe Weather in Houston Texas

Whitmire described downtown Houston as a “mess” and warned that “many roads are impassible due to downed power lines, debris, and fallen trees.”

Firefighters were removing live wires from Route 290 and most city traffic lights were down, he added.

In Louisiana, the severe weather knocked out electricity for some 215,000 customers, many in and around New Orleans. Around 115,000 remained without power as of Friday morning.

A swath of the southeast coast, stretching from Louisiana, through Mississippi, Alabama and into the Florida Panhandle, was under a flood watch early Friday.

A man walks over fallen bricks in Houston.

The National Weather Service said in an afternoon update that unsettled weather, including the possibility of excessive rainfall and severe thunderstorms, will persist across the Southeast through Saturday.

Around 7 million people along the central Gulf Coast remain under flood watches.

“A few tornadoes, scattered damaging winds, and hail all appear possible over the central/eastern Gulf Coast area,” according to the National Weather Service.

The agency also noted a risk of severe thunderstorms in portions of the northern Plains through Friday evening.

X-Men '97 Season 2: Characters, Story & Everything We Know

Next marvel tv show: all 12 upcoming mcu releases confirmed after x-men '97, x-men '97 can finally fix marvel's biggest tv blunder according to exciting season 2 theory.

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for X-Men '97 episode 10

  • X-Men '97's action packed season finale sees Professor X reverse Magneto's EMP attack, shattering his psyche.
  • The X-Men defeat Bastion, but are forced to save Earth from a catastrophic event, leading to their assumed deaths.
  • The X-Men are scattered through time, as Apocalypse returns setting up season 2's story.

Marvel has wrapped up the first season of X-Men '97 in some style, setting up an exciting future for the revived mutant show, and setting the bar extremely high for the MCU's live-action X-Men movies. The action-packed episode brought an end to Bastion's Project Zero Tolerance storyline, with the villain's defeat, but set up an even bigger threat with the return of a huge X-Men villain.

While the X-Men once more saved the Earth and perhaps restored humanity's faith in them (at least partly), this was not a happy ending, and there are a lot of questions for X-Men '97 's already-confirmed season 2. Most excitingly for some, the finale also teased the resurrection of a fan favorite mutant, with an incredibly dark twist, as X-Men '97 ingeniously teased a shocking future for Gambit . And in typically smart fashion, the finale brought the season's major messages about unity and trauma full circle for a perfect pay-off.

X-Men '97 Season 1 is now available on Disney Plus, and here is everything we know about Season 2's characters, story details, and more.

X-Men '97 Episode 10 Key Story Takeaways

  • Professor X hijacks Magneto's powers to reverse his EMP attack on Earth, but shatters his psyche
  • Jean Grey is resurrected by the Phoenix Force and defeats Mister Sinister
  • Bastion evolves into a higher form, by removing Cable's arm and absorbing his techno-virus
  • Terrified, the UN approve the use of the Magneto Protocols, firing missiles at Asteroid M in an attempt to destroy it
  • Xavier leads Magneto back to his body, he saves Earth from Asteroid M, but the X-Men are scattered, some sent to the past and some to the future
  • Bishop returns to unite with Forge to find the X-Men or rebuild a new mutant team
  • Most of the X-Men meet Apocalypse in Ancient Egypt, while Cyclops and Jean are sent to the distant future, where they meet Clan Ascani and a young Cable
  • X-Men '97 's post-credits scene reveals Apocalypse in present day Genosha, where he picks up one of Gambit's cards from the rubble

What X-Men '97's Credits Scene's Apocalypse Return Sets Up

Gambit will return, with the worst twist possible.

Just as the credits roll on X-Men '97 's finale, a credits stinger is quickly thrown in, taking us back to the wreckage of Genosha in the present day. An off-screen voice mourns the destruction saying " so much pain, my children, So much death " as Apocalypse is revealed, retrieving one of Gambit's destroyed cards from the dirt. The choice of words is incredibly loaded, of course, because Gambit became one of Apocalypse's Four Horsemen in the comics after the events of Decimation - and Death specifically.

X-Men '97 has introduced how Gambit will return, with a shocking twist. In the comics, Gambit actually volunteers to become Death, in the belief that he can help restore mutantkind after Scarlet Witch wiped them out. Here, there's a darker tease, as Apocalypse will apparently revive Gambit to take up a role at his side.

Apocalypse was last seen in X-Men: The Animated Series when the X-Men defeated him, sending him to the Astral plane. There, he demanded Fabian Cortez find him a new body, and ultimately took Cortez's body when he failed. In the time since that episode, Apocalypse has clearly found a way to restore his physical appearance to the hulking form X-Men fans will be most familiar with. Given his powers, that isn't too much of a stretch, but we can probably expect X-Men '97 season 2 to show exactly how it happened.

Marvel Studios' most recent Disney+ series may have come to an end, but there are plenty of upcoming MCU TV shows in development.

What Happened To The X-Men At The End Of X-Men '97?

The x-men are lost in time.

While attempting to save Earth from the catastrophic impact of Asteroid M when the UN's misguided Magneto Protocols backfired, the X-Men prepare to sacrifice themselves. Beast's plan to stop the impact fails, but Charles Xavier manages to revive Magneto in time to stop the asteroid's descent. In a shocking twist, however, the asteroid is apparently vaporized, vanishing along with the X-Men, before it's quickly revealed that they were teleported through time.

The majority of the mutants - including the revived Magneto - are sent to 3000 BC Egypt, where they encounter En Sabah Nur, the alternate name for Apocalypse, in a more human-looking form to his X-Men: The Animated Series appearances. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Jean Grey are sent to the year 3960 AD, where they meet Mother Askani and the Clan Askani. They also meet their young son Nathan, who they sent to the future for his protection, along with Bishop earlier in the season.

But who or what sent the X-Men through time? In the comics, both Beast and the Phoenix Force have been behind storylines where the X-Men were pulled through time, but neither feels right here. X-Men '97 episode positions Apocalypse as the key to the temporal event, and the iconic villain did use time travel in TAS , of course, so this may be explained by his link to the Axis of Time in some way.

The Age Of Apocalypse Is Coming To X-Men '97 Season 2

The four horsemen are just the start.

The X-Men '97 credits scene's set-up of Gambit's return is just one part of what will no doubt be a huge storyline in season 2: the new Age of Apocalypse. In Marvel Comics run Blood of Apocalypse, the villain seeks to revive mutantkind, establishing a new Horsemen of the Apocalypse team, for which Gambit volunteers, naively. He is unsuccessful, ultimately, but X-Men '97 sets up an alternative take, also potentially drawing on the Age of Apocalypse storyline.

Sending the X-Men back to Ancient Egypt to confront the young En Sabh Nur before he evolves into his more dangerous final form could be the key to changing the timeline and rescuing the future timeline, where the Clan Askani rebels meet Cyclops and Jean Grey from Apocalypse's dominion. Having the villain active at three different points in the timeline is an incredibly intriguing prospect that promises to be true X-Men event storytelling.

In the comics, Mother Askani - voiced in X-Men '97 by Star Trek legend Gates McFadden - leads the rebellion against Apocalypse, while also protecting the young Nathan Summers (Cable). In the finale, Askani (really Rachel Summers) is told by Nathan that Cyclops and Jean are not a threat, setting up a continuation of their complex family story against the backdrop of Apocalypse's war with humanity.

Crucially, Bishop also returns after he was split from Cable in the timeline, uniting with Forge - the only X-Men member to remain on Earth - reintroducing his time-traveling powers as a handy plot device for eventually reuniting the X-Men. It may be, however, that the X-Men currently trapped in 3000 BC decide that their best hope for the future is to stop En Subh Nur becoming Apocalypse centuries before his radical final form emerges.

X-Men '97's Finale Firmly Sets Up Onslaught's Arrival

Magneto and charles xavier may have teased another huge villain.

Apocalypse aside, there is still also a very good chance that Onslaught will still arrive in X-Men '97 season 2 as the fallout from Xavier's psychic attack on Magneto unfolds properly. Professor X was warned that both of the long-time rivals could be lost if he failed in his attempt to save Magneto, hinting at the long-term impact that could be spun into Onslaught's arc in season 2 (or beyond).

In the comics, Xavier's attack on Magneto led to the most volatile parts of Erik's psyche entering his subconscious mind and merging with Charles' own suppressed resentment at his treatment by humanity. After lying dormant for some time, Onslaught manages to manifest his own body, leading to the arrival of one of Marvel's most compelling villains. It would be a logical path for X-Men '97 's future to follow suit, even if it doesn't come for a while.

What The Ending Of X-Men '97 Really Means

Strength in unity overcomes trauma.

Subtext matters in X-Men '97 . Already, the first season of the revived show has explored more adult themes than the '90s original, with Beau DeMayo keen to reflect how collective experiences of mass trauma have changed us all . That subtext was very much the key to unlocking the ending of X-Men '97 episode 10, as Charles Xavier was forced to effectively recondition Magneto's mind after shattering his psyche.

Xavier and Magneto were trapped in a sort of psychic limbo within Erik's psyche, as what was left of his mind attempted to reconcile fragments of his traumatic past. Xavier managed to convince his old friend that he could be a better man, effectively helping him unlock his trauma and deep-seated hatred of humanity borne out of the Holocaust. He does so by breaking down Magneto's belief that he is unique and alone in his trauma, and suggesting that the X-Men's shared experiences are their strength: "The X-Men and I may not resemble one another, but we are still family."

The idea of unity despite difference is one that X-Men '97 has foreshadowed repeatedly in the first 10 episodes. For most of them, the X-Men team was fragmented by their own storylines and the team was effectively torn apart by the events of Genosha. That led to the radicalization of Rogue and Sunspot, who briefly allied themselves to Magneto, in the belief that his mutant world order was the only way to deal with their own trauma.

It is ultimately only through the team overcoming those fractures, and their pain (particularly over Gambit and Maddie's losses) that they are able to save Earth. Every episode led to that moment, and though it is Magneto who lends the hail mary blow to stop Asteroid M's extinction event, the team working together, by embracing but also overcoming their trauma - including offering Bastion salvation rather than death, that they succeed. In short, X-Men '97 preaches the lesson of unity as strength.
