  • 566jone 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Possible scam company - AVOID! All 18 people on our trip had been sold a different trip. No replies to emails, no refund AVOID THIS COMPANY. I should have checked trip advisor first with the other negative comments! But was on holiday and it was recommended by the hotel and just wanted an easy trip... Big mistake. My wife and I had a terrible experience in Feb 24 - they sold us the "Grand Tour exclusive" which sounded amazing, but the actual trip we were sent on was almost compeltely different. We booked a trip through the website, then had a later whatsapp conversation with someone who said the trip was cancelled, but would we be interested in a different trip on a different day. We were sent a link to the trip description - it sounded great (listing interesting places, a bespoke trip with a small group (no more than 8) in a small minibus), so we said yes. We were sent official tickets with QR codes by email so seemed a reputable company at first. The trip turned out to be 18 people in a huge coach (not a great start, but we didnt mind that too much we thought), until they described the trip about 45min in - which was completely different to the tour we had booked. This one was very commerical, was not cultural and was about 2 hours shorter than advertised. At the first stop we talked to the other passengers, and it turned out everyone was very annoyed as they all had been mis-sold! We spoke to the tour guide on the bus - who did speak to the company owner - and the original response was "you can get a taxi back to your hotel if you are not happy". After some unhappy words, we eventually convinced the guy to change the trip, so we missed out the aloe factory and had a trip to some caves and longer in the ancient capital, so we did our best to make the most of it. Very disappointing overall however. We complained about this - both on the trip itself and afterwards by email asking for a full or partial refund - and have had no response from the company. So - was this a terrible mistake or was it deliberate scam / mis-selling? I suspect deliberate mis-selling. I understand that things change and maybe there was an error on their booking system. If that was the case - why no acknoledgement or refund or goodwill gesture etc? Why not even an apology or "we will look into this for you"? Most likely the standard way they operate is to get your money by promising an exclusive trip, then they place you on a different, cheaper, shorter, larger trip with lots of other people. They only explain the different trip when you are miles away from your hotel, and I assume they are banking on the fact at that point there is nothing you can do on the trip - and afterwards also very little as you dont speak the language, dont know the legal system, and are on holiday and leaving soon. I see the company does sometimes respond - if it turns out to be some huge misunderstanding then I will update my review. We shall see... Read more Written 25 February 2024
  • drummingboy 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Daughter (6) enjoyed it, but marred by the large group size Went on this trip with my daughter from Fuerteventura so it inclided the boat trip. The volcano was interetsing and my daighter loved it. Lovee they hand you hot stones from the volcano and the demo of the water turning to steam. As is with most tour groups, we were on a large coach bit they did handle it pretty well, however the group is large so you do feel like a typical tourist being shipped around. I think its possible to just drive to the volcano that way you could explore the roads yourself through the lava fields which i thibk would be more exciting than going around in a coach. Saying that, we did enjoy it, i just didnt love the large group size. Read more Written 14 February 2024

  • Jane M 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Volcano express tour 2023 Tour is good, just be careful as lunch is NOT included and when we were taken for ours where the Aloe Vera museum is you get pushed to the buffet, only to find it is 15 euros and not worth it. Take your own lunch and eat in the shade. Apart from that it was a good tour, just spoilt by the obvious Lanzarote guide trying to get the English to pay over the top prices for lunch. • Daisy L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A last minute trip turned into the best experience A truly fantastic experience. We booked last minute due to another company letting us down and we are so glad we did. Lovely trip to Lobos Island, stopped on our way back to feed some chipmunks courtesy of Hassin providing us with the food. Hassin then took us to Popcorn beach and went out of his way photographing every group. A final stop at the dunes and Hassin yet again makes sure everyone has all their memories. He truly made this experience amazing! We have zero negatives of our day and can’t wait to book with the excursion center again Read more Written 24 July 2023
  • courtneywP8262BI 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Very scenic Tour guides are extremely welcoming and very bilingual. Very knowledgeable also. Volcano experience was absolutely breathtaking, especially the coach tour round the roads into/near the volcano. The only slight criticism is it’s quite time constraining, only 30 minutes for lunch. Or only 20/30 minutes to explore certain areas. Otherwise a great experience overall. Read more Written 6 May 2023
  • LeanneL702 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do NOT book with Excursion Center Took the Jeep tour to Cofete Beach: Jeep was way too small for passengers, and because seating is not clearly marked, we had some larger passengers and I felt so cramped that I had to twist my upper back, uncomfortably siting on 0.5 seat space for a trip that lasted for at least 8+ hours of travel time. I could barely breathe, and the driver/tour guide made no arrangements to fix it, and actually didn't even acknowledge it was an issue. One of the back seats was also broken, wobbling, vibrating back and forth during the entire first 6 hours of the trip. The driver/guide did fix it at 2pm and helped to change jeeps but it was after hours of being thrown around on a broken chair on rugged terrain. Generally the tour guide also had terrible attitude, did not acknowledge and apologise for what was wrong with the jeep or the challenges that we struggled with. Go somewhere else!!! • Linda C 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not impressed with Tour guide lack of knowledge with Ferry times. They should have given us correct information I booked a day trip to Lanzarote with excursion center.com for myself and my Daughter . We booked through the excursion Centre in Fuerteventura. We paid €90.00 for both of us. We were told we would get picked up at Hotel Elba Sara at 8.05am The bus arrived on time. But bus driver was waiting for Tour guide to arrive. He kept phoning him and eventually He arrived at 8.20am. He checked our tickets and we were on our way. We made a stop at 4 other hotels along the way to pick up passengers. We got to Ferry at 9.30. Another tour guide met us at the bus. I asked him what time will we get the ferry back from Lanzarote. He told me to be at the ferry for 3.20 as it was leaving at 3.50. We arrive in Lanzarote and had a lovely day. We arrived at ferry at 3.10pm. There was a group of 10 people waiting. Said they were told by tour guide that ferry was leaving at 3.30. We waited and waited. I phoned excursion center at 3.55 and was told the Ferry was not arriving until 5pm. We were so annoyed. We waited nearly 2 hours in the heat for the ferry. Tour guide told us different times. So not impressed with the service Read more Written 26 June 2022

  • Nikos O 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Be careful of this tourist trap! It was a waste of money/time and I’m going to explain why: I clearly requested for a tour in English. They sold me this tour, which looked super interesting and it was stated on the flyer, on the email-ticket as well as by the guy who sold it to me, that it’s gonna be in English. So the next day, I went to the office at the harbor, got my tickets etc.. and we eventually arrived in Lanzarote. Once we arrived, there were two buses along with two guides waiting for us, and it looked very well-organized. However, once I told them that I am with the English-speaking bus, they both seemed confused, as if it doesn’t exist at all ( which is true). They told me that I have to choose one of the buses ( German/French or spanish/Italian). There was no other option, and I was forced to hop on a bus for a whole day tour, listening to things which I couldn’t understand, information that I paid for and didn’t get. I was forced to ask the people around me about what we see here and there, and not only did that look ridiculous, but everyone agreed that this is unacceptable from the company’s side. It’s a pity that I saw many beautiful places without information, and at the same time I could have chosen another company for the same tour. I received a call the other day from one of your representatives(Hassin), promising me to find a solution as my stay in fuertventura was short. It was only a call, and it was only promises to call me back and apologies- a classic way to avoid any kind of refund. Unfortunately, I am going to review this trip and I will have to rate it bad, no matter if the guide was good or if the tour went as planned. I know that a bad comment on TripAdvisor or Google won’t do any harm, yet it’s the only way to express my disappointment and warn any potential future travelers like me. I saw no solution from your side, and I realized that the only thing you cared about was to fill in your places. Read more Written 27 July 2021

Lanzarote Grand Tour - Day Tour from Fuerteventura

Description

The Lanzarote Grand Tour - Day Tour from Fuerteventura starts picking you up in Caleta De Fuste (for all people staying in the center-south of the island) and in Corralejo (for all people staying in the center-north of the island). We will reach Corralejo harbour to take the ferry to Lanzarote.

In 35 minutes we will come by ferry to the Playa Blanca harbour of Lanzarote passing by the very small but fantastic Island of Lobos!

Once in Lanzarote we will meet our professional guide that will assist us all day long during the tour giving us all the information about the places we are going to visit! Now we are ready to start the very proper excursion and enjoy the tour!

First visit we make is the beautiful bay of El Golfo, where the Olivin stone was discovered. You will see the rugged coastline of Los Hervideros and the salt flats of Janubio, where you will learn about the importance of salt extraction in the island’s history!

From here we head towards Timanfaya National Park, home to Fire Mountain. Here you will see the geothermal experiments, demonstrating the immense power of the heat just below the surface. You will have some time looking around the natural oven, where food is still cooked today, before the coach takes you on the magnificent crater tour around the national park to experience the best views and history of the lava fields.

Then we will have a tasty, three-course lunch in a typical canarian restaurant before proceeding to La Geria. La Geria is a unique place in all Canary Islands where you can see the most unusual wine vineyards in the world. Here we have the opportunity to learn more about it and above all to taste and try the unique flavours and textures of the different wines that are available!

Driving to the north and passing the monument Al Campesino, in the centre of the island, we will reach Teguise, the ancient capital of Lanzarote up to the highest viewpoint Peñas del Chache (670m). Here we can take photos of the north-east coastline and Haria, the valley of 1000 palms!

Then through the winding roads we make our way to the other spectacular viewpoint of Guinate, where we can admire the Chinijo Islands; Alegranza, Montaña Clara and La Graciosa. From here we head to our last stop to visit Los Jameos del Agua! Here we can find the gifted work of Cesar Manrique. From the underground caves, featuring a mysterious salt lake, which is homed to the tiny albino crabs and transparent waters, to enchanting subterranean gardens and spiral staircases made from natural volcanic rock, these views and unbelievable experiences will leave perfect memories of your day in Lanzarote!

Finally we are ready to head back to Playa Blanca harbour to take the ferry back to Fuerteventura.

Recommendations:

As you can imagine, throughout the day we will pass through a variety of landscapes and places, so we recommend wearing sturdy close-toed shoes, and although it may be hot, bring some sort of jacket if it is not summer.

What time is pick-up and drop-off? Upon reservation, you’ll find the exact information about the closest pick-up point and time to your accommodation. In any case, you can find the approximate pick-up and return times here from the various tourist areas:

*Return times are approximate under normal conditions.

What recommendations should I consider for this tour? We recommend wearing closed shoes and clothing based on the time of the year, but always bring a hat, in case it’s too sunny, and a jacket in case the temperature changes in some areas.

We also recommend taking precautions against dizziness since the road is very curvy and some people, by not being used to it, can get dizzy on the road.

How much will it be between being picked up and when the tour starts? Faced with the option of creating a single meeting point for our convenience or of defining several collection points so you can be picked up at your accommodation or close to it, we have chosen to offer the second option for your convenience. The service is slower, but it will be much more comfortable.

It should be considered that the areas further away from the starting point of the tour are normally the first pick-up areas and the last ones to be dropped off.

Can the described route vary? On special occasions the routes may vary. Due to road closures and other types of force majeure situations, the itinerary may be modified. In these cases, we’ll try to inform you as far in advance as possible.

Are there stops to eat? When can I reserve my food? We will make a long stop to eat. Throughout the excursion, the guide will inform you about the restaurant and mealtimes, as well as the different menus that you can reserve.

Restaurants have been selected considering 3 factors: 1.- It should lie within the tour route, so we don’t waste time traveling to other places. 2.- It should have the capacity and space to feed 50 people at the same time in the shortest time possible. 3.- Quality/price of the service.

Why is this excursion cheaper than the Lanzarote Highlights tour if it is longer? The Grand Tour, even though it is longer in duration, is cheaper than the Lanzarote Highlights tour because it includes fewer places where you have to pay to enter.

What is the maximum weight per person for riding a camel? The maximum weight per person for riding a camel is 110 kilos.

How much does the camel ride cost? 6 euros per person approximately. The guide will tell you the exact price on the bus.

How long is the ride? The ride lasts approximately 20 minutes.

How is the reservation payment made? If there are less than 5 people, an amount will have to be paid as a guarantee when making the reservation and the rest will be given to the guide, in cash, when boarding the bus. If there are more than 5 people, the entire reservation will have to be paid when booking.

How can I pay for the reservation? Reservations can be paid by credit or debit card or through PayPal

What happens if I get an error message when booking? Occasionally there may be a problem with your credit card or PayPal account. Please try to reserve again if an error appears, try with another browser or device. If the reservation is still not completed correctly, contact us through our customer service channels.

How will I know that the reservation was made correctly? At the end of the reservation, a locator or reservation number will appear and, in less than 5 minutes, you should receive the booking voucher in your email inbox.

What happens if I have not received the reservation voucher? If you haven’t received an email in your inbox, follow this procedure:

  • Check your spam or junk mailbox.
  • Contact us.

How long in advance should we book? We always recommend booking as far in advance as possible since places are limited, and you could miss out on the excursion.

What happens if, when booking, there are no more places for the day I want to go on the excursion? If you notice that you’re trying to book in a day shaded orange, that’s because there are no more places left. Try to book for another day or click on that day and fill in the form to add yourself to our waiting list in case there’s a cancellation. In more than 50% of the cases we usually find a solution.

How many stops does the tour make? We make quite a few stops to see the places we’ve planned to visit and others to go to the bathroom from time to time.

How will the babies go on the bus? Babies don’t have to pay for this excursion and will go on their parents’ lap.

Timanfaya

It had been recommended to us and we loved it. The only thing that would have been nice is if the artisanal market in Teguise had been open, but we could not make it on the day that it was.

Grand tour to Timanfaya National Park, Green Lagoon, Jameos del Agua and la Geria

Many thanks to the company. They were great. We will recommend them to anyone we can.

Couldn’t be more complete. Perhaps the bad thing is that it’s a little bit rushed and you run around taking photos and not much else. It’s great for people who are on the island for just a day or two.

The buses were modern and comfortable. The island was lovely, with charming and very characterful places. I would do it again in a few years when I return.

I consider this a very thorough tour. It’s definitely worth it for the visit to Jameos and to Timanfaya Park. In the next few days I’m staying only to spend time on the north island, which they say is spectacular.

I was very impressed by Jameos del Agua, much better in person than in photos.

It’s amazing, the entire island is surrounded by white houses and palm trees on all sides. I enjoyed seeing the scenery both on foot and by bus. There is never a moment when you lose view of the sea.

Unbeatable. The green lake is out of this world, unbelievable that I was there. Same with Jameos del Agua and the other areas we visited. I will never forget it!

I think it’s the best if you are in Lanzarote for a short amount of time. In just one day practically everything can be seen, or more or less the most characteristic of the island.

Keep in mind that when you arrive at Jameos, you have to choose or enter there or at the Verdes cave, one or the other. I chose Jameos because I already knew what I would see more or less but it’s a shame to not be able to visit the cave and learn more about it.

The camel ride was very fun, as was the final show at Timanfaya Park. I recommend it.

Totally happy with these people. My partner and I did the route together and I think that we will hire their services again for other areas that we want to enjoy on the island.

If it’s not the most complete tour, it has to be one of the most complete. We toured the most emblematic places around the entire island. It’s difficult to find a trip of this kind that is so good and full of things to see.

The area of the park that’s full of volcanoes and craters was really impressive. It looked nothing like I had expected a volcanic island to look like.

I would have preferred taking the time spent on the camel ride to keep enjoying other views. The time was adjusted somewhat and the guide hurried us along a couple times when we were taking photos.

Low Cost tours are great. I have never been to a more amazing island.

I have not had the opportunity to compare prices with other tours, but it doesn’t seem at all expensive to me for the treatment and service received.

Very good guide throughout the journey and excellent quality for the price. Thank you.

Pick-up was on time and the Schedule fulfilled my expectations. The tour was fantastic. What would be better is if lunch had been included, plus the wine tasting was just okay and the samples were very small.

A great way to tour the island if you are going for the first time. For me it was the second, but I was accompanied by my son who had never been. He ended up very happy.

A short but unforgettable holiday. It’s the first time that I’ve visited Lanzarote and I will definitely return. I was there for just a few days but it was very nice to visit the important places and to get a general overview of Lanzarote.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
