  • Mwanza Region

Mwanza has its nickname – “The Rock city” for a reason:

all around and also right in the middle of the city, round rock fragments hulk up to fantastic formations and create a landscape that is unique in Tanzania.

In 1890, the German colonists decided to open the new administration unit at Lake Victoria and built a house on top of a rock. This house constituted the foundation of MWANZA.

They called the rock “Muansa”, probably a misunderstanding, from the Sukuma word “Nyanza” which means lake. From there the Germans started planning the whole town and the port in 1892. The architecture, the rocks and of course lake Victoria definitely make Mwanza worth a Journey.

Present population:

population of about 1.2 million people.

Geographical location:

mwanza tanzania

Area of Mwanza region:

Mwanza region covers 35,187 square kilometers out of which 20,095 square kilometers is semi- arid, while another 15,092 square kilometers is covered by lake Victoria. The fish caught in lake Victoria consists of three main species, namely Nile perch, Tilapia and dagaa or Omena. The Nile perch first appeared in Lake Victoria in the late 1950s.

The fish is locally known as Mbuta or sangara and fishery experts say it can grow to two meters in length and weigh up to 200 kg.

Establishment (History):

Mwanza was founded by a German Colonial agent – Emin Pasha in 1892 as an administrative centre to control cotton exports from the area. In 2012, Mwanza region celebrated its 120th anniversary since its inception and in other words Mwanza came to life seven (7) years before Nairobi city, the capital of Kenya. Nairobi was established in 1899. In 2000, president Benjamin Mkapa elevated Mwanza into city status, becoming the second city in Tanzania after Dar es salaam. Now Mwanza is the third biggest (with agglomeration second biggest) town in Tanzania.

Prof. Hans Meyer, writing in the Das Deutsch Kolonialreich in 1908, said by then Mwanza consisted of 1200 Africans, 64 European inhabitatnts and 50 Indian traders. There were a handful of European firms and a district office. Others were a company of soldiers, a post and Telegraph line to Tabora, a hospital and a hotel .in 1953, Mwanza was elevated to the status of a town council by the then British colonial governor, sir Edward Twining. In 1980, Mwanza became the second municipality after TANGA.

Sukuma, the bantu speaking people and the largest ethnic group in Tanzania as well as other minor ethnic groups.

Administration:

Administratively, Mwanza region is divided into eight (8) districts – Geita, Ilemela, Kwimba, Magu, Misungwi, Nyamagana, Sengerema and Ukerewe. Now Geita district has been elevated to the status of REGION. It is known as Geita region.

mwanza tanzania - rock city

Main economic activities include, the fishing and processing industry. Eastern and central Africa’s largest fish market, Kirumba, is found in the city and of course the main stay of it all due to the good soils and favorable climate agriculture, but mining has become an important factor in the wider region around Mwanza, where with the airport a key link to the outside world exists.

Mwanza is also a major transport transit point for the railway, connecting the Indian ocean port of Dar es salaam via Mwanza by rail. Large scale industries in Mwanza include Mwatex – East Africa’s second biggest textile mill – Nyanza bottling, Tanzania breweries limited, lake soap industries, continental printing and packaging corporation and many more.

The city also has several small scale industries.

FINANCIAL AND BANKING INSTITUTIONS

These are the National bank of commerce ltd, CRDB Bank, the National microfinance Bank, Tanzania postal Bank, standard chartered bank Tanzania Ltd and many more.

Getting to Mwanza:

Mwanza region is easily accessible by road, the central rail network from Dar es salaam, air and waterways.

mv-victoria

Include Rubondo Island National Park, famous for unique chimpanzees and plants, rare birds, and varieties of fish species. A visit to saanane Island National park, half an hour from Mwanza by boat. A trip to the Ukerewe Island to see the Dancing rocks, where only men are allowed to visit tick. Other tourist attractions in Mwanza region are the Kijereshi game reserve, Bujorasukuma traditional and historical center, where slaves were kept before being transferred to Zanzibar, the Bismarck Rocks, the Handebezeyo caves which were used as shelter during tribal wars and Isamilo hills.

And there is the memorial to see and pay respect to of the victims of the MV. Bukoba sinking a few years ago, when hundreds drowned as the vessel went down, also now part of the Mwanza history as the marine disaster took place within the city of Mwanza. Finally , don’t forget to visit the colonial house – the first climb leads you to the origin of Mwanza as well as to climb “Jiwekubwa’ the big stones.

Mwanza city council plans to build an international beach market to be located at Makuyuni in the near future.

Export and transport among the countries are the foundation of Mwanza’s economy. Around the city of Mwanza, the land is primarily devoted to agricultural enterprise. Tea, cotton, and coffee plantations throughout the area produce large volumes of cash crops that pass through Mwanza on their way to market. The town’s industrial harbor and busy streets make it a prosperous and busy place to explore.

For visitors, the city makes a good base from which to explore the nearby Rubondo Island National Park and the western parts of the Serengeti. Rubondo Island National Park offers pleasant day-hikes and bird watching around the lake shore.

About Mwanza city

Mwanza City Tour: “The Pearl of Africa”

Mwanza City welcomes visitors with natural and fresh weather from the source of the River Nile off the shore of Lake Victoria. Mwanza City is an ideal place to start your adventure with wildlife safaris, boating and fishing on Lake Victoria or Rubondo Island, conducting research, or enjoying business. Mwanza City is a fast-growing city in Tanzania and is a dynamic, colorful destination of culture and life. It is a central point for great lakes countries in Africa, and the transit hub for many of Tanzania’s world-renowned tourist destinations like western and northern circuit wildlife safaris.

Mwanza City Activities

You can enjoy long bush walks and picturesque hikes, motorbike riding, boat cruises, lake fishing, and even visit famous kopjes or outcrops that are perched precariously on top of one another. Visit scenic islands, such as Ukerewe and Lukuba Islands, and expand your awareness by visiting cultural activities about Tanzania’s largest Bantu empire….”Basukuma.” Mwanza is a pleasant and exceptionally lively town and has a lovely waterfront that commands excellent views of the lake. The rocky city is also endowed with unique fish called Sangara (Nile perch), “the mother fish of Basukuma,” in Lake Victoria (other fish such as Tilapia can also be found). Mwanza City has other unique tourist attractions such as Igogo caves and underground tunnels (German Boma) that were used as an escape route when Germans ruled Basukuma.

Mwanza City Tour Summary

Begin the morning with a lovely breakfast at your hotel and depart at 8:00 a.m. for the Bujora Village to visit the Sukuma Museum, where you will learn about the traditions and culture of the largest tribe in Tanzania. The magic drums are fascinating at the museum, and in some exceptional cases, you may even have the opportunity to play them.

Thereafter, drive back to Mwanza City Center and begin a Lake Victoria adventure by boarding a speed boat. Sightseeing and bird watching are done en route to the Saa Nane Island, stopping at various rock outcrops where flocks of cormorants, egrets, ibises, and the occasional monitor lizard are known to sunbathe.

Sundowners are enjoyed from the island’s impressive rocky vantage points with a spectacular view of Mwanza City as the sun sinks into the Lake Victoria. Saa Nane National Park is a small park, but it’s like visiting a true paradise! End the day by returning to your hotel for the night.

HISTORY OF MWANZA CITY TOUR

The tour takes more or less 2-3 hours on foot. The historical tour is mainly the relics of the periods of Germans, British, Indians, and early Tanzania.

The best starting point is the large roundabout or rotary near Lake Victoria (and near the Tourism Information Office =TIO) from where the three main roads are leading: to the East (Nyerere Road), the South (Kenyatta Road), and to the airport in the North (Makongoro Road).

Near the clock tower in the grass in the middle of the roundabout is an inscription recalling that in 1858 the British explorer John Speke was the first European to see from nearby Isamilo Hill the waters of Nyanza which he called Lake Victoria after the reigning British Queen? He correctly claimed it to be the source of the river Nile.

On the wall of the clock tower is a War Memorial of the British. During the First World War British troops coming from Kenya and Uganda drove out the German garrison of Mwanza who fled to Tabora to the south. The British administered Tanganyika up to 1961.

There are a number of monuments from the German Period, which lasted only from the early 1890s to 1916. Across the street in the direction of the lake are former German offices with a decorative small wall in front. Here criminals were condemned and hanged on the Gallows Tree, the trunk of which remains in the middle of the road to the East. On the hill to the east of Makongoro road, one can see a German Watch Tower which was part of a large fortress now used by the Regional Commissioner as his official residence.

Boost for travel agents as Race Across the World grips viewers

Viewing figures for the BBC One series are rising, along with bookings at travel companies that serve east Asia

No celebrities, no luxuries and a miserly £20,000 in prize money. On paper the BBC One series Race Across the World never looked like a hit.

And yet the travel programme, in which backpackers battle across distant sections of the planet, is now into its fourth season with audiences rising faster than a tuk-tuk driver can get you down Bangkok’s Khao San Road.

This time 5.5 million viewers have watched five two-person teams head off from Sapporo in northern Japan en route to the island of Lombok in Indonesia. That is almost a million more viewers than series three attracted, figures that are also setting records in travel companies that serve east Asia.

“Bookings for Japan are up 75%,” says James Mundy from the Inside Travel Group . “People were coming into our office to book the day after the first episode aired.” The company, which specialises in cultural engagement and off-the-beaten-track locations, has seen other countries benefit. “After Korea featured in the second show,” says Mundy, “bookings rose by 46%.”

Other travel operators are seeing the boost. “When the show started we saw a 30% increase in Japan searches,” says Jo Fairweather from Much Better Adventures , pointing out that the country’s unique mix of ancient traditions, pristine wilderness and futuristic cities is hugely attractive. Responsible Travel and Trailfinders have experienced similar rises.

It is not only Race Across the World that is exerting influence. Seamus McCauley, head of public affairs at travel company Holiday Extras has noticed the increasing role of television and film series in vacation choices.

“Season two of White Lotus boosted Italy, Malta is getting more attention through Gladiator 2 – television really can make large shifts in what’s fashionable.”

Those big-buck blockbusters are far from Race Across the World’s penny-pinching frugality, but therein lies its charm: limited cash means contestants cannot simply leap into a taxi, and certainly not on a plane – that’s forbidden. Not only that, phones and credit cards are taken away.

For older viewers it looks like student travel circa 1980. Cash is eked out, locals consulted, leading to fascinating diversions. Mother and daughter Eugenie and Isabel, whose relationship can be tense, do a memorable homestay in a Cambodian floating village.

Frequently the friendliness is matched by the yawning cultural chasm: 20-year-old Owen baffles a Shinto priest with a breezy, “Chill out”. Contestants dig deep and learn fast.

The result is a glimpse into the kind of travel that many yearn for: genuine adventures where strangers turn out to be good people and travellers go home with compelling stories to tell.
