The 1992-built yacht Club Med 2 is a modern sailing cruise ship owned by Club Med Cruises. The vessel is marketed as "cruise ship" (mega-yacht) and is powered by 7x computer-controlled sails combined with traditional diesel-electric propulsion (4x diesel generators power 2x electric motors).

History - construction and ownership

The 400-passenger ship Club Med 2 is owned and operated by Club Med SA (fka Club Mediterranee) - a French corporation (part of Fosun Group) specializing in premium all-inclusive vacation packages to its privately-owned resorts worldwide. Club Med 2's sistership (Club Med 1) was bought by Windstar Cruises and renamed Wind Surf (1998).

The shipowner Fosun Group (officially Fosun International Ltd) is a 1992-founded, Shanghai -headquartered Chinese holding company incorporated in Hong Kong in December 2004. Fosun Group has offices in 16 countries and is one of China's largest privately-owned companies, with (2019 data) total assets USD 102,6 billion, revenue USD 20,7B, net income USD 2,1B. The corporation is Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed (as SEHK 656) since July 2007. Fosun's businesses are mainly investing and managing in various companies (including joint ventures), as well as in private equity funds. Fosun fully- or partially owns companies in the industries of banking, insurance, asset management, entertainment (Cirque du Soleil), fashion (brands Ahava, Caruso, Folli Follie, Lanvin, Silver Cross, St John, Tom Tailor, Wolford), food and beverages, private hospitals, real estate, retail, tourism, among others.

The 5-masted Club Med 2 is a computer-controlled schooner and one of the world's biggest sailing ships. The vessel was completely drydock reconstructed in 1996, its interior was totally redesigned in 2008, and was last refurbished in 2022 (read the refurbishment's review in the Wiki section ).

The vessel (IMO number 9007491) is France- flagged (MMSI 227194000) and registered in Mata-Utu/ Wallis and Futuna .

In 2008, the boat's interior was entirely revamped by Sophie Jacquemin (Geneva Switzerland-based interior designer).

The depth/draft of just 5 m / 16 ft allows the ship to sail closer to shores while on voyages featuring coastal navigation.

Onboard services are provided by 214 staff/crew, mostly from Mauritius.

MS Club Med 2 staterooms (186 total/372 berths) include 1x Armateur Suite (40 m2 / 430 ft2), 10x Owner's Suites (sized 390 ft2 / 36 m2), 5x Deluxe Cabins (24 m2 / 260 ft2), 170x Club Superior Cabins (18 m2 / 195 ft2).

Club Superior Cabins are spread over Deck B-Borneo (55x/lower deck), Deck C-Caraibes (67x/middle deck) and Deck D-Desirade (48x/higher deck).

All passenger cabins are outside (with sea views) and with standard double occupancy, but some of the Superior staterooms are triples, providing accommodation for a third occupant.

The boat has 6 passenger-accessible decks (out of 8 total), of which 4 are with cabins.

Two elevators (forward and aft lifts) interconnect all passenger decks.

The 8 decks have a total surface area of ~2000 m2 / 21530 ft2.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

Club Med 2 offers all-inclusive cruises, with room service (for breakfast) and two gourmet restaurants (both with waiter service in the evenings) included in the fares. Tables are set each evening. Cookery classes are offered three times per week.

The Mediterranee Restaurant (Main Dining Room on Deck G/right by the large terrace) mixes various flavors with exotic cuisines. The intimate restaurant is complimentary during the day and a-la-carte-priced in the evenings, but dinners can be reserved in advance at the Reception Desk. Le Mediterranee serves buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner, with alfresco dining (on the adjacent Veranda or under the balcony) or in the dining room. Tables are 2-4-6-8-seat.

The Magellan Restaurant (deck E) is with table-side waiter service and costs extra. Its chef and his team prepare a mix of rare and traditional French dishes. Sommeliers/wine stewards assist passengers to choose from the premium wines menu. Tables can accommodate 2-4-8-12 people.

Room service (in-cabin dining) is 24-hour but at extra cost, excluding Suite guests for whom the service is complimentary.

Club Med 2 has four bars - Le Pacifique/The Pacific (piano bar lounge and nightclub on Deck F/open only in the evenings, hosts the Welcome Aboard Cocktail Party, has a humidor, sells premium cigars), Le Venise (Deck E/next to the swimming pool, with stern views), Moby Dick (with live music programming/piano performances in the evenings), and The Albatros (by the swimming pool on Deck G/sundeck). All onboard bars serve snacks complimentary.

The superyacht can navigate and anchor in destinations inaccessible to larger vessels. This unique ship features music and ballroom dancing while cruising at night and making a stop each morning. Snorkeling is included in the Club Med cruise packages, as well as wakeboarding and water skiing.

Passengers can read in the Library/Nautique Hall, visit the Boutique Shop, exercise in the modern Gym, enjoy premium wellness experiences (5x Treatment Rooms for massages, 2x Sauna Rooms, Beauty Salon) or dance the night away in the Nightclub. Wellness Center's massages are for an extra fee.

Premium Champagne is served in The Pacific Lounge complimentary in the evenings (between 6-11 pm).

All outdoor spaces are with premium teak decking.

Complimentary onboard activities also include aqua classes, fitness classes, nightly shows and dancing, watersports (boating, waterskiing, kayaking, windsurfing, wakeboarding, snorkeling). The Marina Platform (from the open-sea activities are launched) is sized 85 m2 / 915 ft2.

Customized body treatments include PEELING WITH 3 SALTS (45-min, using salts from France, the Himalayas and the Dead Sea) and HYDRA-NOURISHING COCOON MASK (30-min wrap applied warm onto the skin).

Itineraries

MV Club Med 2 itinerary program is based on Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea voyages in the summers followed by Caribbean deployment in the winter. Transatlantic crossings between Europe and the Caribbean (RepositionCruises.com) are offered seasonally.

Following the Coronavirus crisis (2020-21), the company Club Med Cruises restarted operations with MS Club Med 2 on July 10, 2021, leaving from Nice . During the crisis (May 2020 thru July 2021) the boat was laid up / docked at La Seyne-sur-Mer/Toulon ).

Club Med 2's Caribbean 2022-2023 program (December-March) had scheduled 7- to 12-night voyages departing from island ports in Guadeloupe, Martinique, St Martin. Feature destinations in the region included St Vincent & the Grenadines' islands Mayreau , Bequia , Tobago Cays , France's St Barthelemy Island , Guadeloupe's Marie-Galante Island.

In the Mediterranean are offered golf-themed voyages (golf cruise packages) inclusive of up to 5 golf course fees and services provided by one or two PGA-certified professionals. The ashore/land services include shuttle transportation, bags, golf carts. During the school vacation are offered "family cruises" with supervised kids programming throughout the day. To access the sailship are allowed children 8 years of age and older. Supervised activities are in two separate groups (for kids 8- to 12 yo, and for teens 13- 17 yo) and include Club Med Artists (arts and crafts), Games (contests, competitions), Gaming Consoles.

Since 2020, the vessel is managed by CCS (COLUMBIA Cruise Services Ltd). The German company ( Hamburg -based) is responsible for Club Med 2's crewing and recruiting, in-port operations (including provisioning and refuelling), technical managing, refurbishments , logistics. The ship is France- flagged (MMSI number 227194000) and owned by the Chinese corporation Fosun Group (Fosun International Ltd, 1992-founded, Shanghai -headquartered) - via its fully-owned subsidiary company Club Mediterranee SA.

Refurbishment 2022 review

The multimillion drydock 2022 refit and refurbishment was completed in December 2022. The project included redesigning and complete renovation of all venues (restaurants, bars, lounges, wellness facilities) and staterooms with new furniture and amenities.

The Gym was fitted with new cardio equipment, soft lighting, soundproof flooring. Club Med Spa by Sothys was upgraded with new treatments and exercise programming (including outdoor yoga classes on the sundeck).

Le Magellan Restaurant's enhancements include live cooking demonstrations and new menus developed by Ferrandi Paris (French culinary arts school also specializing in hospitality management). The seasonally changed dishes are themed on the local cuisine of the cruise itinerary's regions and ports/destinations.

The boat's 5 sails were remodeled.

Club Med 2's previous major drydock refit was conducted in 2008.

Along the coastline of this Croatian city, Dubrovnik exudes historical seaside romance with a splash of animated youthful energy. Known for its unparalleled foodie scene, jaw-dropping castles, festivals, multiple designated UNESCO heritage sites, infamous patchwork of underground tunnels, lush greenery, countless distilleries and being the inspiration for such iconic stories like A Christmas Carol and Harry Potter.

Tucked between the mountains and the Madeira coastline, Funchal is known as, "God's Floating Garden". From its center, filled with bars, cafes, and galleries, to the flora-covered coasts and dramatic cliffs that line the emerald-blue sea — this Portuguese city (and its wine) beg to be experienced.

This British territory on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula may be small, but packs a strong global punch. Inspect the intricate caves of it towering limestone mass, the Rock , view the wonder via helicopter or stay land-bound for cafes, shopping and people-watching in town.

From the stretches of shimmering white beaches and golden sand dunes to the buzzing capital of Las Palmas, this subtropical island is full of both endless natural wonders and trendy European flair. Days can be spent hiking, scuba diving, or exploring the city’s center for fresh seafood and martinis.

Greenock (Glasgow)

A classic Scottish port town, Greenock is a beautiful place with a lot of history.  Spend time in the uber-green Scottish countryside of Lyle Hill or visit a historic cathedral before making your way the 40-minute commute to Glasgow.

Arrive at golden hour for a catamaran sunset sail before jetting to one of Ibiza's famed night clubs. For those more into delicious than dancing, try an olive oil or local winery eco-tour, carve out a secluded spa day complete with a mind-balancing yoga class, or just let the old city guide you.

Set on an arching peninsula, Ísafjörður is a charming patchwork of 18th-century timber and tin-clad buildings, towering peaks and dark fjord waters. From hitting the town and hiking hills to fine dining and Swamp Soccer, you’ll fall in love with the land of fire and ice before the day is over.

Often regarded as one of the most exciting cities in the world, Istanbul is more than a place, but an experience. See architectural wonders, peruse countless vendors, appreciate the ladened museums, and indulge in the eclectic fare here in the aptly nicknamed “city of the world’s desire.”

Kusadasi (Ephesus)

With crystal clear waters, sprawling beaches, and proximity to historically rich sites like Ephesus, Temple of Artemis, House of Virgin Mary and many more, Kusadasi is unlike any other city on the sea — and with an ideal climate, there’s (almost) no bad days to experience it.

Founded nearly 1,000 years ago, Kirkwall has gone from a Viking village to a thriving town whose modern influences have always kept the Viking spirit alive and well. With an award-winning town center, you’ll find plenty of mouth-watering places to eat and drink and tons of quaint shops.

Nestled into Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, Kotor is a breathtaking gem of the Balkans. A medieval maze where museums and churches weave in and out of cafe-strewn squares and Venetial palaces — the intricacies of the city are only matched by the stunning scenic terrain in the backdrop.

Equal parts beachy hotspot and cultural hub, this historic city located on the Galician Coast is famous for its freshly-caught seafood, buzzing nightlife, and the oldest working lighthouse in the world.

Halfway between Genoa and Pisa is La Spezia — the perfect hub for you to discover the countryside of Liguria and Tuscany. With Cinque Terre being on most travelers’ bucket lists, a quick train ride will get you to the five towns overland, or you can hitch a ride (book a Shore Thing) by sea.

A port city that opens up to one of the most famous places on Earth, La Verdon is a stunning entryway to arguably the most iconic wine country in the world – Bordeaux.

The only town on the archipelago of Shetland, Lerwick is a beacon of nature. Visit one of Shetland’s amazing beaches, kayak, explore the labyrinth of sea caves and witness a broad spectrum of wildlife,  from Orca whales to Shetland ponies.

Known as the city that glows, the Portugese capital sits atop seven hills that form a natural amphitheater, reflecting light all around. Beyond the cosmic gleam, Lisbon is filled with dreamy, seaside romance — from the white-sand beaches to wine-tasting along the cobbled streets downtown.

Livorno (Florence/Pisa)

A picturesque port city featuring an impressive canal network, Livorno is the gateway to one of the most magical regions in all of Italy – Tuscany. Spend your time here exploring Pisa and its world famous leaning tower on your way to Tuscany’s renowned capital, Florence.

Uncover centuries of history in one of the oldest cities in Europe and among the oldest continuously inhabited in the world. Sailors can venture off to visit Alhambra, a beautiful old-world palace, or just spend the day reveling in the small town charm.

With a backdrop of white-marked mountains covered in what appears to be snow, Marina di Carrara is actually blanketed with some of the world's purest marble – a geographically rare site. On the border of Tuscany and Liguria, get access to Lucca, Pisa, Portofino and the breathtaking Cinque Terre.

One look at this southern port town and it’s clear why Van Gogh was inspired to paint here. Go from France’s second-largest city, to scenic and historical countryside in minutes. Medieval villages feel frozen in time as do the Starry Nights (actually frozen in Van Gogh’s painting of that name).

Mykonos may be famous for its beach club parties and electric nightlife, but the Greek Isle has a notably quiet side, too. With overnight stays, you can explore the charm of the cafe-lined waterfront promenades, or tour the vineyards tucked charmingly into the gorgeous hillsides of the island.

A name synonymous with Italian culture and cuisine is undoubtedly Naples. Known for a wide range of things — from the ancient ruins of Pompeii, the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and of course the home of the Napolitano pizza.

Palermo, Sicily

Explore the various Piazzas, peruse the various shops and outdoor markets that fully envelop what a melting pot Palermo is, tour the iconic Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele and, indulge in (arguably) the world’s best pizza – or go on a tour of all the places from HBO’s White Lotus.

This capital city of the island of Mallorca is the perfect dose of countryside serenity you might expect from a secluded Balearic island. Bike through picturesque villages, enjoy art in Valldemossa or stop off at a family-owned winery with a history so rich, you can taste it with each sip.

A hot spot for writers and artists, Rhodes is where the Byzantine Empire meets modern cultural ingenuity. Whether wandering the cobbled streets of Old Town for delicious Greek bites, exploring the perched-on-a-hill village of Lindos, or hitting up famed Faliraki Beach — this island truly has it all.

Arguably the most striking of the islands, Tenerife somehow boasts remote mountain-ridge villages, charming ancient towns, and a bustling cosmopolitan city. Cool off in the natural salt-water pools, discover the volcanic sand beaches, or head to a seaside restaurant for a glass of homemade sangria.

As the Greek Goddess of the Cyclades Islands, Santorini is known for breathtaking panoramas, fiery orange and blue sunsets, and the famed red and black beaches. Take in views from the blue and white dotted hills of Oia, or enjoy locally-made wine while sailing along the waters of the Caldera coast.

Siglufjörður

Siglufjörður’s landscapes of breathtaking mountain ranges, mysterious fjords, and unobstructed ocean views leave unlimited opportunities for outdoor adventure, from hiking the idyllic trails to cross-country skiing in nearby Skarðsdalur.

Settled between lush mountains and the sparkling sea, Split is Croatia's second-largest city and one of the Adriatic's most energetic ports. Packed with Roman ruins, medieval churches, stylish shops, and hip bars, Split offers mesmerizing views and intoxicating experiences you won't want to resist.

Stornoway, Isle of Lewis

Once a sheltered harbor dedicated to fishing and farming, Stornoway has expanded to the tourists who have been flocking to the area in recent years. Visit the beautiful Lews Castle, go on a guided swimming or boat tour where outdoor adventure meets wildlife, or have a pint at one of the many cafes.

A gateway to charming towns in Provence, access both coastline and countryside in France’s second largest naval port. Originally a fishermen’s village, its coveted Mourillon quarter still boasts original architecture with a daily market, chic little boutiques and seaside restaurants. Bon appetit!

A fortress city known for its cathedrals, sprawling gardens and museums it feels like you’re entering a different time when you step foot here – plus there’s no shortage of mystical blue lagoons and natural swimming pools to take a dip or explore.

Melding classic European flair with the charm of a seaside fishing town, soak in historic Old Town, explore the cafes and Baroque guild houses of Butchers' Street, or take a scenic sail in Ghent. 

An idyllic mix of architectural splendor, rows of brightly colored houses, cafès, cool bars, friendly locals riding their beloved bikes, countless breweries and the iconic Tivoli Gardens there’s no wonder why Copenhagen is known as one of the happiest cities in the world.

Effortlessly cool, Stockholm boasts Scandi history, culture, cuisine, and design. Stroll the colorful streets of Gamla Stan, visit the Fotografiska museum, catch the Royal Palace's changing of the guard, try the famous meatballs... and after all that, you'll earn yourself an Absolut on the rocks.
