2024 Tour de France: Romain Bardet wins Stage 1, full race results

tour d'eau in english

Bold racing from France’s Romain Bardet and the Netherlands’ Frank van den Broek paid off as the pair got their storybrook ending to win Stage 1 of the 111th edition of the Tour de France on Saturday.

In his final year before retirement, Bardet will finally wear the coveted yellow jersey. Bardet had previously won three Tour de France stages from 2015-2017, but this opening stage win will surely be the sweetest.

After his win, Bardet told the media that the yellow jersey was the last goal of his decade-long career.

“I’m finally myself, I’m at a loss for words,” Bardet said .

Bardet was joined at the finish line by teammate van den Broek, who helped the team leader all the way to the finish line, highlighting the importance of teamwork throughout the 21-stage race.

Stage 1 of the 2024 Tour de France featured an unprecedented Grand Départ in Italy to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Ottavio Bottecchia's historic 1924 victory as the first Italian to win the Tour. Riders completed a challenging 205 km (128 miles) hilly route with seven categorized climbs and over 3,600m (11,800 feet) in elevation gain. Originating in Florence, Italy, cyclists rode through San Marino and the Apennine mountain range to reach the Italian city of Rimini on the Adriatic coast.

Bardet and van den Broek broke away from the peloton with approximately 40km to go. Although the field faced a strong headwind down the flat road into Rimini, the pair managed to withstand an encroaching peloton armed with the field’s best sprinters with just a few meters to spare.

A group of the best climbers broke away for most of the race, but Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen did enough to earn the King of the Mountains classification and will wear the polka-dotted jersey used to recognize the best climber.

Temperatures over 90 added to the difficulty of this stage and team Astana Qazaqstan paid a heavy price. Team leader Mark Cavendish appeared to struggle with heat-related issues and dropped from the peloton early on. His teammate, Michele Gazzoli of Italy, who also seemed affected by the heat, became the first man to withdraw from the race.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar, the favorite to win the 2024 Tour de France, set himself up well with a fourth-place finish, while Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard proved he is certainly healthy enough to be in the mix as he pursues a three-peat after sustaining serious injuries in a crash in April.

The 140-meter-high Jet d’Eau water fountain is Geneva’s most iconic landmark. Translated from the French words “ water jet “, it’s basically a huge water jet shooting 200 kilometers per hour into Geneva’s skyline.

tour d'eau in english

One of the world’s biggest fountains, it shoots out liters of water each second.

History of Jet d’Eau

tour d'eau in english

Initially built for practical purposes in 1886, the original Jet d’Eau was used to regulate water pressure. A pumping station that powered local artisans’ machines needed hydraulic pressure released.

It wasn’t supposed to be a tourist attraction, but it became one. The water jet was moved to its current location in 1891 ; its height also grew to 90 meters back then. In 1951, a new nozzle replaced it, pushing it up to 140 meters .

500 liters of water flow every second. The Jet d’Eau Cabin is lit by thirteen projectors and the rotunda by eight LEDs.

Services Industriels de Genève manages Jet d’Eau, and volunteers switch it on and off every day. The water fountain doesn’t run all the time. At night and when it’s below zero, it’s off.

Best Views of Jet d’Eau

tour d'eau in english

Because Jet d’Eau is so high, you can see it from a lot of places around Geneva.

In my opinion, you can get the best views of Jet d’Eau from Geneva’s lakefront . Walking along the lake will let you see it easily without any obstructions. You can also walk along a 200-meter jetty ( Jetée des Eaux-Vives ) near Jet d’Eau and see it up close.

Walking from Quai du Mont-Blanc in Geneva Pâquis and crossing the  Pont du Mont-Blanc bridge to Jardin Anglais to see Jet d’Eau is worth it.

Don’t forget to try out the Ferris Wheel at  Jardin Anglais  if it’s running. The Ferris Wheel offers a great view of Geneva’s skyline for a small fee. Views of  Jet d’Eau  are great from the Ferris Wheel.

The St . Pierre Cathedral’s Towers have a great view, but from a bit further away. You can also see it while hanging out at the nearby beach .

Touring Jet d’Eau

tour d'eau in english

The water fountain runs from the third week of November until the third week of October every year. After that, it closes for about a month for maintenance. If you’re in Geneva during the day when it’s operational, you’ll probably get a glimpse of it at some point.

Jet d’Eau is turned on from 9:00 or 10:00 AM until 10:30 PM or 11:15 PM in the evening. The exact working hours are on the SIG website . The LED lights are illuminated according to specific themes, like yellow for Childhood Cancer Month, green for 10 days against ovarian cancer, etc.

As mentioned, Jet d’Eau runs as long as the weather and situation permit. As an example, Jet d’Eau was also shut down for 12 weeks during the COVID lockdown in Switzerland to protect those who maintain it.

Guided Tours at Jet d’Eau

Tours are available for groups of 10 to 12 starting at 10 years old. The tour happens every day except Tuesdays, one hour before the jet is turned on. Tours last about an hour and are in English and French. Check with SIG and register there .

How to Get to Jet d’Eau

Walking around Geneva’s lakefront is definitely the best and easiest way. It’s also possible to take the bus to Vollandes and subsequently walk 5 minutes to Jet d’Eau. You can also take the tram, but the walk to the jetty will take longer.

Final Thoughts: Jet d’Eau

tour d'eau in english

The Jet d’Eau fountain is Geneva’s icon . Even though it’s not as tall as Burj Khalifa or Eiffel Tower, it’s still relaxing and scenic.

I loved walking near it or hanging out in an area with a view of it. Lots of tourists love the vibe of the area. I think that you’ll definitely enjoy visiting it.

Lake Geneva is a gorgeous place in Switzerland. The clean, blue-green water, fresh air, and mountainous surroundings won’t let you down.

Besides Jet d’Eau, you can check out the Ariana Museum , United Nations , or St. Pierre Cathedral in Geneva .

Tour de France 2024 live stream: Can you watch for free?

The unquestioned biggest race in cycling is back, with the top riders in the world set to take on the 2024 Tour de France. For the first time in 111th editions of the race, the finish will be in Nice instead of Paris, as the latter prepares to host the quickly upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics.

Watch the Tour de France 2024 live stream on Peacock

Can you watch the tour de france 2024 live stream for free, watch the tour de france 2024 live stream from abroad.

The race starts with Stage 1 on Saturday, June 29, at 6:30 a.m. ET. In the United States, you can watch on Peacock (live coverage of every stage), NBC (live coverage of a few stages) or TV5Monde (French-speaking coverage of every stage).

If you don’t have cable or you’re just looking for more information, here’s a complete rundown of all the different ways you can watch a live stream of the 2024 Tour de France in the U.S.

This is the far-and-away best option for watching the Tour de France in the United States. The reasoning isn’t exactly complicated, either. If you want to watch every single stage live, and if you want to watch in English, then Peacock is the only  way to do that in the U.S.

Unfortunately, there’s no free trial. Fortunately, you only need the basic “Premium” tier to watch, and that will only cost you $6 for a month (or a slightly discounted $60 for the whole year). That’s well worth it for the Tour de France by itself, but you’ll also be able to watch the upcoming Summer Olympics, other live sports and hundreds of hours of TV shows and movies.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better deal in streaming right now.

If you’re intent on watching a free live stream of the Tour de France, Fubo is undoubtedly your best option. It includes NBC, which will have live coverage of a few stages, but what we’re really interested in here is the TV5Monde channel, a French-language channel that will broadcast each stage of the race (some may be live, some may be on a tape delay).

TV5Monde is available by itself as an add-on to Fubo’s main channel package, and it can be included in your free seven-day trial. Of course, you need to be OK watching in French, and this still won’t get you the whole race for free (Fubo gets a bit pricey after the free trial), but it’s a nice option if you’re dead-set on watching a few stages without paying anything.

That’s not all. If you’ve used up your Fubo free trial , you can also get TV5Monde through Sling TV . The “French Bouquet” channel package–which can be found through the “International” tab on the top of Sling’s website–includes TV5Monde and is currently available for free for your first seven days (just $15 per month after that).

If you’re outside the United States, there may be some other international live-stream options available to you. But if that’s not the case, you can potentially watch the race with the help of a virtual private network (VPN). Peacock, Fubo and Sling are US-only, but a VPN can hide your location and make it look like you’re actually located in the US, thus allowing you to access these streaming services from abroad.

We’ve compiled a list of the the best VPN services and the best VPN deals , but if you’re looking for somewhere to start,  NordVPN is a good place to do that. It’s easily one of the top VPN’s out there, plus it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it out free of risk.

After coming up seven goals short in their bid for a first-ever Stanley Cup, the Florida Panthers return home for Game 5 against the Edmonton Oilers tonight. The Panthers are still certainly in control of the series, but a loss here would make things significantly more uneasy, as the series would then head back to Edmonton for a Game 6.

Game 5 of the Stanley Cup is about to begin, at 8:00 p.m. ET. If you live in the United States and want to watch, it will be televised on ABC, but if you don't have cable and would rather watch a live stream, there are also a bevy of different ways you can stream the NHL playoffs. Is There a Free Oilers vs Panthers Game 5 Live Stream?

If you're new to boxing and want to catch all the bouts from the biggest stars in the sport, we can help you find the best and cheapest ways to watch boxing online. It can get complicated. Fighters are tied to specific promoters who are tied to specific streaming sites. The days of Friday night fights on network TV are long gone.

There are two main ways boxing is streamed: Pay-per-view fights and fights included in a monthly subscription. When a fight is a PPV, there's no way of getting around that fee. Some sites give subscribers a discount on the PPV price, but when you include subscription fees it ultimately costs the same. We'll be sure to show you the best ways to watch PPV boxing matches when they happen, but right now we'll focus on the various subscription services that give you access to regular fights.

Gervonta "Tank" Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) is making his long awaited return to the ring this weekend. In June of 2023 he got a decisive win over Ryan Garcia in the highest-selling PPV event since Mayweather-McGregor. Garcia took a knee after a crippling liver shot and couldn't beat the count. Davis has since spent a short stint in prison, which calls into question his readiness for the fight. Frank Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) is undefeated and may try to take advantage of Davis' long layoff.

The co-feature fight sees David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs), the undefeated super middleweight who has long sought a fight with Canelo Alvarez, step up to the light heavyweight division and challenge Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs) for the WBC Interim belt. Gvozdyk's only defeat was to Artur Beterbiev, another potential opponent for Benavidez if he wins tonight and decides to stay in the light heavyweight division.

What was your most memorable experience seeing a Rolling Stones concert? Sun-Times readers tell us theirs.

Since forming in 1962, the legendary english band has performed more than 2,000 concerts, including many stops in chicago. we asked readers who have seen the stones to tell us about it..

The Rolling Stones’ 2024 “Hackney Diamonds” tour hit Soldier Field on Thursday and will include another performance Sunday in a return visit to Chicago, where the band has performed dozens of times.

We asked Sun-Times readers to tell us about their most memorable experiences seeing the Stones in Chicago. The responses have been lightly edited for clarity and readability:

“1972 at the International Amphitheatre. A couple of us weaseled our way to the front row and stood on a folding chair with 3 or 4 other goons. The one thing I remember before getting knocked off the seat was looking up and watching Mick Taylor going into a solo. I only got about 3 minutes in the front row, but that vision is still locked in the rock vault!”

— John Edmondson

“I saw the Stones back in 1964 at the Arie Crown Theater. I think tickets were $3 or $4. The best part of the evening was the producer let audience members line up and file past or shake hands with the group who were seated on the stage!”

— Beatrice Villar, 75, Rogers Park

“The ‘Mouth’ tour!! The whole row in front of us passed out! Why pay all that money to see them and hear them!!”

— Phyllis Schriedel

“September 1997 at Soldier Field. Mick and the Stones were truly impressive. We signed up for a phone service promo to be able to purchase the tickets. It was a school night; on the train rides, our daughter had to memorize the periodic table of elements for a chemistry exam the next day.”

— Amy Jackson

“Saw them Sept. 11, 1994, at Soldier Field. The best part was when they played a blues set on a stage further into the crowd that brought them closer to me.”

— Frank Vaisvilas

“I saw the Rolling Stones at the International Amphitheater in June 1972 when I was 18. I loved Mick Jagger. I had a poster of him on my bedroom wall, but the most memorable part of the concert was that Stevie Wonder opened for them!”

— Betsy Schorsch, 70

“2019 tour. I believe it was the first show they did after Mick’s heart incident. Mick was amazing, running all over the stage and runway like he was in his 20s.”

“2002, 2003, 2005 and 2019. 2019 was such a great memory. I focused on it often during the pandemic. I live in L.A. now. I bought tickets for my parents and I flew in. We walked to the show, as they lived in Museum Park. Huge crowds. Big rock celebration.”

— Nathan Dusek

“Soldier Field, 1979-ish?? Hot day. They brought official, firemen-type water hoses on stage and sprayed the audience.”

— Deborah Fuller Tobias

“Second show at Soldier Field on the 1997 tour. The stage was right near our seats. They did ‘Let It Bleed’ and ‘The Last Time.’ The whole show was phenomenal!”

“1994 at Soldier Field, eight rows from the stage. We’ll be back this Sunday, just not as close. Can’t wait!”

— Charlie Stewart

“Thursday makes five times. Of course, the first was the best. Truly, I enjoyed them all. What made the first better in 1969 was I got front-row seats thanks to a dear friend of mine who worked at Ticketron. As the concert started, everyone rushed the stage at the International Amphitheatre, so it really wasn’t great. We still stood the entire show. It was hot, people were passing out, my boyfriend held onto me because I was 90 pounds.”

— Susan Harris Fiege
