The Tourist Ending, Explained: Is Elliot Dead or Alive?
The thriller series ‘The Tourist’ centers around a car rollover victim named Elliot Stanley, who completely loses his memory due to the incident. With the help of a few acquaintances in the town of Burnt Ridge, Elliot tries to find out more about his identity and involvement in a series of perplexing predicaments.
Written by Harry and Jack Williams, the series progresses through Elliot’s attempts to unravel the mystery behind his enemies, who unceasingly chase him. The first season of the engrossing series ends with a cliffhanger, leaving the viewers nothing but stunned. If you are trying to make sense of its ending, we have got you covered! SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Tourist Recap
A man gets chased by a giant truck as he drives through the Australian outback in his car. After considerable effort, he loses the truck but eventually gets hit by the same. He wakes up in a hospital in the town of Cooper Springs, without any memory of his past or identity. Probationary constable Helen Chambers visits the man and tries to retrieve information about him but fails to do so. From his clothes, the man gets a scrap paper with the address of a diner along with the date of a meeting.
The man discharges himself from the hospital and goes to the diner in Burnt Ridge, a nearby town, and sits at the table mentioned in the paper. When he steps out to go to the restroom, a bomb explodes at the diner. He realizes that he is being hunted by an unknown enemy. With the help of Sue, the owner of his shelter in the town, the man tries to find out what he was doing in the region prior to his memory loss. At that point, he receives a call from a man buried in an oil drum, seeking his help.
Along with Luci, a waiter at the diner, the man locates the buried man but finds out that he is dead. While returning, he notices that Luci’s handwriting and the handwriting on the scrap paper are the same. When he confronts her, Luci reveals that he is Elliot Stanley, her ex-boyfriend. As they return to Burnt Ridge, a fellow named Billy arrives at Sue’s home and tries to kill Elliot, Luci, and Helen. Elliot saves Helen from Billy and they both escape. Billy goes to Luci’s place and gets killed after a fight. Meanwhile, Detective Rogers arrives at Burnt Ridge to investigate the explosion. He alerts police stations nearby to find Elliot.
When Helen realizes that the police are looking for Elliot, she pleads with him to surrender. However, he holds her at gunpoint to flee from the region and find Luci, who tries to leave the town. During their expedition, Helen and Elliot start to nurture a bond. By that time, Kosta Panigiris, an infamous drug lord, arrives at Burnt Ridge for Elliot. He kidnaps Rogers’ wife and asks the detective to find and take Elliot to him. The detective agrees and locates Elliot at a nearby motel. When a local police officer named Lammon comes in the way of Rogers’ plan, he kills him and takes Elliot to Kosta.
Kosta threatens to kill Elliot unless he finds a bag that contains $1 million Elliot stole from the notorious criminal. As they try to locate the bag, Elliot starts to remember his past and realize that he was Kosta’s accountant. Meanwhile, Luci arrives to save Elliot. A shootout ensues when Elliot and Luci try to escape, which results in Kosta’s instant and Luci’s eventual deaths . Upon escaping, Elliot meets Helen. They find out that Detective Rogers has framed them for the murder of officer Lammon.
The Tourist Ending: Is Elliot Dead or Alive? Why Does He Try to Kill Himself?
When Helen realizes that her and Elliot’s lives are being targeted, the probationary constable calls her colleague Freddie for help. Freddie discovers a speed camera photo that clearly shows that it was Detective Rogers who had Elliot under custody and not the other way, as the police officer told his superiors. Still, Elliot gets imprisoned for holding a group of people hostages. While he waits for the bail, Lena Pascal comes to see him . To a perplexed Elliot, Lena reveals that he used her and a group of women for heroin trafficking.
Lena shows the scar of the cut made to retrieve heroin bags from her stomach to Elliot and tells him how her comrades died during the mission. An astounded Elliot tries to dismiss her accusations but her persistence to let him know of his cruelties get better off him. His conscience gets filled with guilt as he realizes that he pushed two innocent women to death for his selfishness which he can’t even remember. The terrifying and upsetting presence, revelation, and scar of Lena escalate the guilt that grows in Elliot. His tearful eyes see Lena as the embodiment of his ruthlessness.
Upon Elliot’s release from prison, he contemplates life and the guilt leads him to commit suicide. After ensuring that Kosta’s $1 million will reach the hands of Sue, he crashes his own car to die. Elliot survives the crash and stays away from death but not for long. When Helen comes to know about Lena’s revelation, she confronts Elliot for being such a dreadful man. The bond they gradually nurture gets shattered when Helen realizes that she can’t accept what Elliot did to Lena and other women of her group. Seeing his “only friend in the whole wide world” walk away from him, Elliot decides to end his life.
The guilt of harming Lena and killing her friends and the grief of separating from Helen make Elliot vulnerable. In addition, the helplessness of not understanding whether anything about his past is actually true leads Elliot to death again. He swallows a handful of pills to die, expecting death to conquer him any second. The first season of the show ends before we get to see whether Elliot actually dies or not. Right after he swallows the pills, Elliot receives a message from Helen. He picks up the phone and sees a burrito emoji, the symbol of his happiness.
Helen’s message may give Elliot the satisfaction of dying peacefully, knowing that the one person he cares for in this world has forgiven him. He may still accept death and cherishes a moment of happiness seeing the emoji before he dies. Otherwise, Helen’s message may retrieve Elliot from the clutches of death. He may realize that Helen has forgiven him and there’s a ray of hope to be a better person. He may seek emergency medical assistance and stay alive to give himself a second chance at life as a new person. Either way, we may need to wait for the potential second season of the show to know without a doubt.

Carver Actor Seemingly Confirms His Chicago Fire Season 13 Fate After Shock Exit

- Elliot's true identity as a crime boss's accountant is revealed in The Tourist season 1 finale.
- Elena Pascal is exposed as Elliot's trafficking victim, highlighting his brutal past crimes.
- The complex moral question of guilt for crimes committed without memory is left open in The Tourist.
Content warning: This article includes discussions of suicidal ideation and drug trafficking
Although The Tourist season 1’s ending didn’t answer all the show's lingering mysteries, the thriller’s conclusion did offer pretty clear conclusions to most of its main storylines. The Tourist opens with Jamie Dornan’s Elliot Stanley waking up after a car crash and suffering severe amnesia. Elliot spends The Tourist season 1 trying to uncover the mystery of his past with the help of Danielle McDonald’s Constable Helen. Eventually, in the series finale, it becomes clear that Elliot is not the ordinary civilian he thought he was. Instead, he's really Eugene Cassidy, an international crime boss’s accountant.
This crime boss, Kosta, tries to hunt down Elliot and retrieve the money that Dornan’s character stole from his former employer. Elliot realizes that he went on the run with Luci, Kosta’s fiancée, after stealing the money. Gradually, The Tourist ’s entire cast of characters comes together in the complex season 1 finale. Elliot is pursued by both Kosta and the corrupt cop Lachlan Rogers as he is reunited with his pre-amnesia love interest Luci. Meanwhile, he still can’t recall the identity of the mysterious Elena Pascal, a woman who is smiling at him in all of his foggy, unclear partial memories.
The Tourist season 1 is available on Netflix.
Who Elena Pascal Is In The Tourist Season 1 Ending
Elena pascal turned out to be elliot’s trafficking victim.
In The Tourist season 1’s ending, Elliot is finally reunited with Elena Pascal after a showdown with Luci, Lachlan, and Kosta. Elena is a former victim of Elliot’s drug trafficking ring , and it turns out that he used her body to smuggle heroin into Australia. Elliot’s gruesome plan involved stitching bags of the drug into her stomach to be removed by his colleagues upon her arrival. Unlike two other drug mules Elliot also coached, Elena survived her ordeal because Elliot told her to smile on her way through customs, thus avoiding suspicion. Elliot is horrified to learn of his awful crimes.
However, Elena doesn’t tell the police Elliot’s real identity as she decides that leaving him to live with his mistakes is a fitting punishment. The Tourist 's amnesia plot provides a brutal twist here, as viewers learn that the show’s charismatic leading man was an unrepentant monster before his car accident. Although the audience already knows that Elliot worked as Kosta’s accountant and went on the run after stealing the criminal’s money and his fiancée, these antics pale in comparison to what he put Elena Pascal through. Thus, while Elliot survived confronting Kosta, he didn't necessarily want to continue living.
Kostas and Luci Die In The Tourist Season 1’s Ending
Elliot’s former boss and love interest were both shot.
Before Elliot meets Elena again, Kosta's and Luci’s stories are also wrapped up in The Tourist season 1 finale. Both were shot during the climactic showdown between Elliot, who recently discovered he was the criminal's duplicitous accountant, and Kostas. Kostas died immediately, whereas Luci died while Elliot was driving her to a hospital for treatment . This tragic moment was another major blow for Elliot, as it meant his entire pre-amnesia plan was pointless. To make matters worse, the corrupt Lachlan fled the scene of Costa’s death, freed his wife from Kosta’s men, and framed Helen for Rodney Lammon’s murder.
Why Helen Leaves Ethan In The Tourist Season 1’s Ending
Helen decided her fiancé was too controlling.
Helen spent most of The Tourist season 1 in an unhappy relationship with the controlling Ethan, but Helen finally dumped her fiancé in the finale when he took his behavior too far. Ethan’s incessant attempts to control Helen, beginning with comments about her weight and culminating in him threatening to leave her if she helped Elliot, led Helen to dump her fiancé. Helen went looking for Elliot after dumping Ethan and her hunt for him couldn’t have started at a better time, since she soon learned that she and Elliot were both wanted for Rodney Lammon’s murder.
How Helen Proved Lachlan Was Guilty
Helen showed the police evidence that lachlan kidnapped elliot.
Helen and Elliot were forced to hold a restaurant hostage so that they could exonerate themselves, a risky ploy that eventually paid off. After a chase through The Tourist ’s Australian setting , Helen and Elliot held up a restaurant and Helen received a photo from a colleague of Lachlan with Elliot handcuffed in his passenger seat . This proved that Elliot and Helen couldn’t have killed Rodney Lammon, contradicting Lachlan’s version of events and leading the police to arrest Lachlan for the crime instead. During the negotiations, Elliot also demanded to see Elena Pascale, which set up his devastating reunion with his former victim.
Why Helen Sent Elliot A Burrito Emoji In The Tourist Season 1 Ending
Helen wanted elliot to know she forgave him.
When Elliot discovered the depraved reality of his crimes, he was disgusted by his conduct. However, Helen was even more appalled as she realized that the enigmatic man she spent weeks protecting and helping was guilty of this grotesque abuse. Elliot’s discovery of his crimes sent him into a self-destructive spiral that culminated in him driving off the road in an attempt to dull his pain and lose his memory again. Although he ended up in hospital, Elliot retained his memory and was confronted by Helen, who said that she wanted nothing to do with him after learning about his past.
After this, Elliot attempted to take his own life by mixing a bottle of pills and liquor, although he seemingly survived this attempt. As he lay on the floor, Elliot read a message from Helen that was simply a burrito emoji . This was a private joke between the duo that essentially meant “ We’re good ,” with Helen using this message to prove that she forgave Elliot for his crimes. After all, his memory loss meant he was effectively no longer the same person who committed them. Although Dornan’s character looked unwell, he seemed pleased by this in the finale’s closing moments.
What The Tourist Season 1’s Ending Really Means
The tourist calls its antihero’s past and identity into question.
The Tourist ’s season 1 finale forced viewers to contend with the tricky moral question of whether a person can be guilty of a crime they don’t know they committed . As Lachlan pointed out, the corrupt cop was arguably less guilty than Elliot back when Elliot was still a drug smuggler and a crime boss’s deceitful employee. However, the amnesia-stricken Elliot who built a relationship with Helen was a different person who didn’t even know the extent of his earlier crimes.
As such, The Tourist season 1 finale questioned whether Elliot was guilty since his memory loss reshaped his personality. As far as Helen was concerned, Elliot had atoned for his sins. However, Elena Pascal felt that he should live with a guilty conscience for the rest of his days. The Tourist season 1 finale didn't offer viewers an easy answer here, instead implying that both characters had a point in their divergent views of Dornan’s flawed character.

Villagers call for change after 'weekend of chaos'
Residents living in a popular Cotswolds village have called for change after "a weekend of chaos".
Bibury residents believe new rules need to be introduced to tackle tourists causing traffic, parking and litter issues.
Frustrated locals took to social media after streets became "gridlocked" over the Spring Bank Holiday at the end of May.
Gloucestershire County Council said restrictions preventing vehicles from waiting in certain areas of the village will come into force this summer.
Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the tiny village, which has been described by some as "England's most beautiful".
But after the bank holiday, where coaches and day-trippers left the village gridlocked, residents are demanding change from the county council.
Some residents said it took an hour to travel 1.5 mile (2.4km) through Bibury during peak times over the weekend.
Villagers have said increased litter and aggressive behaviour by tourists is causing some to consider moving out.
Writing on social media, residents called for change - with many posting pictures of poor parking from coach companies on double yellow lines and across pavements.
“[At] 10:45 BST couldn't get down the village. Got out, looked down the hill - two coaches parked opposite each other by the trout farm, traffic gridlocked. Had to turn round. Utter madness,” wrote one local resident.
“When I moved here 30 years ago it was never like this. It’s such a shame we cannot enjoy our own village,” wrote another.
Residents say they are also becoming frustrated by the behaviour of visitors, with claims that locals have been sworn at and some tourists have been spotted walking into private residences.
A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council said the authority is working with the Bibury Parish Council and Cotswold District Council, who lead on tourism issues, to find solutions.
“Restrictions preventing vehicles from waiting on parts of Ablington Road, The Street, the B4425, Salt Way and Cemetery Lane in Bibury are due to be implemented during the summer," the spokesperson added.
"These restrictions aim to help alleviate tourist congestion and make it easier for both residents and visitors to navigate the roads in Bibury.”

Bella Hadid Wears the Naked Dress to End All Naked Dresses
By Hannah Jackson
Anthony Vaccarello finally figured out how to reproduce his collection of ultra-sheer pantyhose dresses. Bella Hadid hit Cannes in look seven from the Saint Laurent fall 2024 show: a halter dress featuring 10 denier hosiery cups, a knotted pantyhose bodice, and a below-the-knee skirt with a control top hemline.
Hadid, styled by Molly Dickson, leaned into the Old Hollywood glamour that has become synonymous with the Cannes Film Festival, adding a pair of mahogany peep-toe ankle strap heels and an enormous pair of drop earrings from Chopard.
This look fits into Hadid’s latest sartorial M.O. of sheer earthy tones that can only be described as “sexy nymph.” While promoting her fragrance, Orebella, in New York, the model wore a diaphanous nude Dior slip dress by John Galliano, as well as a cream-colored Rokh dress with a lace bodice. And yesterday in Cannes, she further explored brown tones in a simple tank dress . But this look—with only some extremely well-placed seams preserving her modesty—is by far her boldest to date.
When asked about how he would manufacture these ephemeral pieces from the collection, Vaccarello told Vogue, “Don’t even ask me about production—I can’t tell you.” This being the first instance the delicate outfits have been spotted on the red carpet speaks to Hadid’s risk-taking style. Even if she is the only person who ever wears one of these sheer Saint Laurent looks out in the world (let’s see if she can make it to the end of the night without any snags) the fact that Vaccarello was readily willing to make one for her speaks to Hadid’s immense power in the fashion industry.
And if this is Hadid’s wardrobe for her first official day of events in Cannes? We can only imagine what’s to come.

Vanna White reveals what she snacks on at ‘Wheel of Fortune’ in behind-the-scenes video
Vanna White doesn't just eat anything when she's co-hosting "Wheel of Fortune."
On May 28, White, 67, gave fans a glimpse at her life backstage at the show when the official Instagram account of "Wheel of Fortune" shared a video of White grabbing some snacks on set.
"What do I do when I'm back here — besides crochet, briefly? Look at my puzzles — they always have little snacks back here. This is what I get," she said while holding up a container filled with nuts.
"They used to bring cookies. They used to bring chips. They used to bring all the bad snacks, and I used to eat them. And I said, 'Do not bring them anymore,'" she added, noting that now she gets nuts and chocolate.
"I try not to eat it though," she said, while holding up the sweet treat.
In the comments, people raved about White's snack choice.
One person said, "I love seeing what you do back stage!!! The healthy snacks would be nice!!❤️❤️❤️."
Another wrote, "Those snacks look great! And I agree. Try not to eat the chocolate….. at least not all in one showing…."
A third added, "Nothing like chocolate and nuts...😋."
White's video comes amid co-host Pat Sajak's departure from "Wheel of Fortune." In a video she filmed before his final episode, which will air June 7, White said she will miss Sajak .
“I can’t believe that tomorrow is our last show together,” she said in the clip. “I don’t know how to put into words what these past 41 years have meant to me, but I’m going to try.
“Eight thousand episodes went by like that,” she continued while snapping her fingers. “When I first started, I was so green. You made me so comfortable, and made me so confident, Pat. You made me who I am. You really did.”
White added that she's still going to keep in touch with Sajak after his departure.
“As this chapter of our lives is coming to an end, I know you’ll still be close by. You’re like a brother to me and I consider you a true lifelong friend who I will always adore. I love you, Pat,” she said.
As for White, she won't be going anywhere anytime soon. In 2023, she extended her contract with the game show through the 2025-2026 season.

Halsey reveals Lupus and rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder diagnosis in new Instagram post
NEW YORK -- Halsey, 29, shared she was diagnosed with Lupus SLE and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder in 2022 on her Instagram on Wednesday.
She first shared she was battling an illness privately in a series of videos posted to Instagram that appeared to document the singer receiving infusions.
"Long story short, I'm lucky to be alive," she wrote in the caption. "Short story long, I wrote an album."
On Wednesday, Halsey thanked fans for their support of her announcement and new music with the caption:
"Thank you guys for the unbelievable amount of love for "The End" and the support you've shown me since its release. I realize everyone is catching up with news I've held in for a very long time, and I wasn't sure how much I wanted to share. You've all been so kind so I want to share a bit more. In 2022, I was first diagnosed with Lupus SLE and then a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. Both of which are currently being managed or in remission; and both of which I will likely have for the duration of my life. After a rocky start, I slowly got everything under control with the help of amazing doctors. After 2 years, I'm feeling better and I'm more grateful than ever to have music to turn to. I can't wait to get back where I belong: With you all Singing and screaming my heart out."
"I feel like an old lady," Halsey says aloud in the first video, while rubbing her legs in apparent pain. "I told myself I'm giving myself two more years to be sick. At 30, I'm having a rebirth and I'm not gonna be sick and I'm gonna look super hot and have lots of energy and I'm just gonna get to re-do my 20s in my 30s."
The singer also released a new song on Tuesday, an acoustic guitar ballad titled "The End."
The new album on the horizon is a follow-up to her fourth studio album, 2021's ambitious "If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power," produced by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
According to a press release, Halsey is making a donation to both The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Lupus Research Alliance alongside the release of "The End."
In 2022, Halsey shared on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome - known as MCAS - and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, known as POTS.

Call him the Flavor Savior.
Flavor Flav showed his unwavering support for Red Lobster after the floundering chain filed for bankruptcy.
“Ya boy meant it when I said I was gonna do anything and everything to help @redlobster and save the cheddar bay biscuits,” the 65-year-old hip-hop legend shared on X Monday.
“Ordered the whole menu!!!”
Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr, shared a photo of himself at a Red Lobster surrounded by the packed table, filled with calamari, nachos, his beloved cheddar biscuits and, of course, lobster.
In an accompanying Instagram post, he pointed out that he shared his bounty with his family.
“It’s flavor time, boyeeeeeeee,” the grateful restaurant chain commented beneath the post.
Flav’s gesture is the second he’s made in weeks.
Last month, the rapper became the official hype man for the US women’s water polo team to help shine a bigger light on their efforts to go for an unprecedented fourth consecutive gold medal at the Paris Olympics this summer.
His giant order also comes weeks after Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy — putting more than 135 restaurants across the nation in jeopardy of shutting down.
The Orlando, Fla.-based chain abruptly shuttered nearly 100 locations days before the Chapter 11 filing.
Several former executives and senior leaders blamed Red Lobster’s sudden downfall on the “miserable” workplace environment and incompetence that Thai Union — which owns a 49% stake in the chain — cultivated after taking over in 2020.
“It was miserable working there for the last year and a half I was there,” Les Foreman, a West Coast division vice president who worked at Red Lobster for 20 years and was fired in 2022, told CNN. “They didn’t have any idea about running a restaurant company in the United States.”
In May, The Post reported that Red Lobster was working to keep its Times Square location open.
If Red Lobster wants to continue operating in the tourist hotspot, it will have to fork over $2.2 million annually in rent for the three-level, 16,482-square-foot space — more than double the $1 million rate it likely pays now.
The seafood chain has just a few weeks to renegotiate the terms of its lease, which expires at the end June, with the landlord.

The Winnetka house where “Home Alone” filmed has apparently found a buyer just days after it was put on the market for $5.25 million.
As of May 31, the home was listed as “contingent” on the listing website Zillow — meaning a sale is underway.
The red brick house was last sold in 2012 for $1.59 million and has since been renovated and expanded.
The listing agent described the home as “a legendary holiday dream home, re-imagined for modern-day luxury: The stately brick Georgian residence of ‘Home Alone’ fame brings forward a rare opportunity to own one of the most iconic movie residences in American pop culture.”
The inside is nearly unrecognizable as the home Kevin McCallister protected from burglars in the 1990 film.
The basement includes a fully equipped gym, recreation space, a full bath, wet bar, movie theater and an indoor sports court “featuring a true 3-point line.”
But from the curb, the place looks the same. And it remains a tourist destination.
In an emailed statement, Dawn McKenna and Katie Moor, the listing agents with Coldwell Banker Realty, declined to disclose details but confirmed: “An offer is now pending after less than one week on the market — and within days of showings. We’re thrilled with the way this home captured everyone’s attention and hearts due to its well-deserved place in cinematic history and the timeless holiday memories it evokes.”
