The top 8 places to visit in the Dominican Republic

Rollicking turquoise waves, swaying palms and some of the finest rum on the planet – the Dominican Republic is just as famous for its natural beauty as it is for the abundant all-inclusive resorts that call the island home.

While there’s no shortage of places with swim-up bars built for serene weeks of lounging by the water, getting off hotel property is one of the best ways to truly take in the Dominican experience.

Spending some time in major cities – like Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros – is ideal for sampling the island culture, while getting off the beaten path and exploring less developed natural enclaves will reward you with waterfalls, whale watching and flora-filled rainforest hikes.

Traveling from region to region is fairly common – you’ll find Dominicans commuting for business, going to visit family in the country or navigating their way to school. Taxis can be found just about everywhere, and ride-sharing services are available in the three major cities: Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata . Public transportation in the form of bus service is both an affordable and memorable way to experience island life.

If you aren't sure where to begin exploring everything the Dominican Republic has to offer, here's a list of eight can't-miss sites.

1. Punta Cana is best for casinos and resort life

When most people think of the Dominican Republic, it’s Punta Cana  they have in mind. It’s the resort capital of the island, with an avalanche of all-inclusives catering to the bottomless-bar set.

But beyond the tourist-focused, theme park–level accommodations, Punta Cana plays host to beaches that rival some of the Caribbean 's best. Punta Cana’s 97km (60 miles) of coastline face both Atlantic and Caribbean waters, inviting you to hop on a catamaran, go deep-sea fishing or get lost in a book while baking under the warm sun.

The area also has a vibrant party scene that pulsates late into the night, thanks to the various resorts’ casinos and clubs.

2. Santo Domingo is best for culture buffs

The gritty hustle and bustle of city life collide with vibrant Dominican culture in the island’s capital (“El Capital”), Santo Domingo . It’s one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities, making it ideal for history aficionados looking to explore colonial-era architecture and take a deep dive into the country’s past.

You'll find the Zona Colonial in the city's center, which the island's oldest church, European fortress, monastery, university and hospital all call home. But step outside the cobblestone streets of the Zona, and a metropolitan joyride awaits, with elegant restaurants, raucous nightclubs and plenty of cultural institutions to add to your itinerary.

Reserve a table at the elegant El Mesón de la Cava for dinner in an ancient Taino cave, and afterward, hit the edgy, strobe-lit club  Jet Set ;  Onno’s , a local bar chain, is also a popular spot for a casual night of beer and cocktails.

3. Samaná is best for whale watching

The Samaná Peninsula is where the unspoiled natural beauty of the Dominican Republic mingles with friendly small-town sensibilities – a stark contrast to the glitzy resorts of Punta Cana and the bustling grind of Santo Domingo.

The capital of this peninsular province is the eponymous Samaná, located in northern Samaná Bay. Eco-tourism is popular here, with one major star attraction: whales. The best time to go is between January and March, when thousands of humpback whales descend upon the bay to give birth to their calves.

El Museo de las Ballenas (Whale Museum) in the neighboring town of Salinas is an attraction in its own right, with guided tours of marine mammal exhibits, handcrafted souvenirs and a full 12m (40-ft) skeleton of a humpback whale found along the rocky coastline between Las Galeras and Santa Bárbara de Samaná in 1993.

4. Sosúa is best for late-night partying

By day, Sosúa is your typical sleepy beach town – large swaths of sandy shores gently lapped by the Atlantic’s cerulean waves. It’s also the island’s dairy and cheese capital, courtesy of a 1938 presidential decree that allowed 100,000 Jewish refugees to settle in the area.

Some 800 people took the offer and launched a dairy and cheese factory, many of whose products you can purchase today.

While this all seems quite bucolic and mellow, Sosúa by night is an entirely different beast. After dark, the main strip (Calle Pedro Clisante) closes off to traffic, and revelers spill out onto the streets from the resident bars, lounges and nightclubs,  many of which feature local live music, including the Blue Ice Piano Bar and the popular Jolly Roger .

But a word of caution: the area is also known for sex tourism. Dominican and Haitian sex workers are known to approach and proposition tourists in the area, so practice a fair amount of caution.

5. Cabarete is best for thrill seekers

Sure, sipping cocktails by the beach is nice. But there’s only so much relaxing you can do, right? When you’re ready to shift your vacation into high gear , set your coordinates for Cabarete , a beach town located on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic.

Founded in 1835 by a British merchant and former enslaver, Cabarete is now an adrenaline junkie’s dream, a haven for kayakers, snorkelers and wind and kite surfers (several international competitions are hosted here). It’s also a popular spot for avid surfers, thanks to some of the best winds and tides in the Caribbean.

6. El Limón waterfall is the perfect adventurous hike

Tighten your shoelaces and summon your balance – the 2.4km (1.5-mile) trail to get to  Cascada El Limón  is mostly wet and rocky terrain that visitors traverse on horseback. But it can also be accessed by foot – you’ll cross rivers and hop over muddy rocks to make it to your destination, so be sure to pack some rubber footwear.

After a 30 to 60-minute walk or horseback ride from the small town of El Limón, you’ll arrive at your destination – a spectacular 46m (150-ft) waterfall that flows into the cool waters of an expansive swimming hole. You can book a tour with one of the companies in Las Terrenas , a 30-minute drive from El Limón; the excursion typically includes a guide, horse and lunch.

7. Bayahibe is best for scuba diving

Situated on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic, Bayahibe is a former fishing village turned quiet resort town with access to some of the island’s most lively (and spectacular) beaches.

Just a few miles from town, you’ll find Bayahibe Beach , Dominicus Beach and boat launches that ferry you to Isla Saona , a national park that’s more booze-cruise layover than uninhabited sanctuary. Your best bet: stay in Bayahibe and take advantage of one of some 20 different dive sites in the area – it’s one of the most active areas for scuba divers in the country. If scuba diving isn’t in the cards, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding or snorkeling the reefs instead.

8. Jarabacoa offers mountainous hikes and whitewater river rafting

Jarabacoa is the antithesis of the Dominican Republic’s oceanside towns. So when you’ve had your fill of lounging on the beach, head to Jarabacoa’s soaring peaks for verdant hikes, whitewater rafting on a roaring river and warm mugs of irresistible Dominican coffee on cool, misty mountain mornings.

Known as the City of Everlasting Spring, Jarabacoa has no shortage of activities: waterfall hikes, rope-bridge crossings over the Jimenoa River, plentiful rounds of golf and visits to the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria del Evangelio.

The area is also home to the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve , where more than 600 species of flora and fauna populate one of the most humid areas on the island (you can arrange a tour of the reserve before you visit). Jarabacao is also known for its Carnaval festivities in February – one of the most famous celebrations in the Dominican Republic.

The best-rated Punta Cana excursions (top excursions with satisfaction guarantee)

Let’s start with the best of the best Punta Cana excursions – those which have been rated into the Top 10 among tens of thousands of authentic and genuine reviews from Punta Cana visitors.

There are literally tons of Punta Cana tours and it might be hard to pick the right one. This is why it is one approach to rely on the reviews of other visitors to find the best excursions in Punta Cana for 2024.

To find the best-reviewed and most popular Punta Cana excursions, we have taken the following requirements for this first section: – at least 150 reviews – as of December 2023, at least a review score of 4.7/5 points (which means that at least 94% of all clients were super happy with the excursion) – no animal activities or animals in captivity involved

Especially the combination of the quantity and quality of reviews guarantees that these excursions will please you. On average, 95% of the participants are rating the following Punta Cana tours as excellent.

It is worth noting that most of these tours in Punta Cana, which are rated as truly excellent, are a bit more expensive than the typical standard Punta Cana excursions. Usually, they are around 90 USD and up – quality indeed has its price in this case. There is a separate section further below with some recommendations for the cheapest tours in Punta Cana – all of them below 50 USD per person.

The following table shows the 10 best-rated excursions in Punta Cana as of December 2023, including their review rating and prices.

Let’s have a look at what makes these excursions in Punta Cana outstanding.

We have picked 5 of the top excursions in Punta Cana and explain them further here.

1) Isla Saona premium catamaran tour

This is the best Punta Cana excursion 2023 you can find – according to the guest reviews. With an incredible 4.97 out of 5 points, this Isla Saona Premium Tour * beats all the other Punta Cana tours and takes the No. 1 spot among all the excursions in Punta Cana.

Isla Saona is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic and it is on top of every list of things to do in Punta Cana . To avoid any crowded places during a tour, this Isla Saona excursion is the perfect choice for you. Among all the Isla Saona tours , this cruise is as personal and in a small group as it can get. The amount of guests is limited, the quality of drinks and food is way above average (with delicious homecooked meals) and instead of just blaring loud music through the speakers, you are getting some educational information from a professional tour guide during the day, particularly while visiting the hidden spots of Isla Saona. This is also one of the few tours which takes you out until Mano Juan, the only village on the island, a true genuine paradise and far away from where most of the other groups are going with the typical Saona excursions .

This Saona Island tour * with a rating of 4.95 out of 5 points also includes lunch, drinks, a caring guide and a snorkeling stop. As with the other tours as well, you are also stopping at the natural swimming pool to enjoy the waist-deep water and the incredible scenery.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: discover Saona Island in all its beauty and head to the secret spots of the island (where most tours don’t go) with a super small group and a caring tour guide Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.95/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: – Excursion to Isla Saona – everything you need to know for your hassle-free Saona Island tour 2024 – How to find the best Private Tours to Isla Saona and Isla Catalina?

2) Snorkeling in Punta Cana

This is one of the best Punta Cana excursions you can find ranked in the Top 10 for many years. With an impressive 4.90 out of 5 points, the Lux Coral Nursery Snorkeling tour * beats most of the other Punta Cana tours.

Even more interesting is that this top performer reaches the top spots even though snorkeling in Punta Cana isn’t actually such a great deal. Compared with other countries or snorkeling areas in the Dominican Republic, the variety of reefs and fishes are at maximum average in the Punta Cana area. However, this Punta Cana snorkeling tour has created an amazing activity, which is one of the best excursions in Punta Cana and differs in very distinct, but important points from its competitors.

First of all, they are not snorkeling in the open ocean like other catamaran tours and party boats in Punta Cana , they are heading to a separate reef which is rated by the ministry of environment as one of the 3 biggest coral gardening projects in the Dominican Republic.

Second, they serve a truly delicious seafood, meat or vegetarian lunch, which gets prepared right on spot and which is much better than some of the lunch options you have in the all-inclusive resorts of Punta Cana .

And third, compared with the typical Punta Cana catamaran tours , the Lux Coral Nursery Snorkeling excursion in Punta Cana adds another stop at a pristine beach, where you are getting served a freshly prepared drink in a coconut – another cool experience.

Furthermore, they are allowing a maximum of 25 guests on their boat, guaranteeing a very intimate experience and making it one of the most exclusive catamaran cruises in Punta Cana.

Please note: this is an adults-only tour, but there is a family excursion option available as well. With the following buttons you can find both tours.

There are more top-rated snorkeling tours in Punta Cna you can consider as well, such as the Small Group Snorkeling & Catamaran * with a rating of 4.91/5.0, the Private Boat Snorkeling & Catamaran * with a rating of 4.93/5.0 or the Private Boat Snorkeling * with a rating of 4.96/5.0.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: they are doing everything different than the typical Punta Cana catamaran tours – and they are doing so much right! Rating (as of December 2023): 4.90/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: – The best Punta Cana catamaran tours – booze cruises, private catamarans, party boats & more – Snorkeling in Punta Cana – the best spots and reefs (+ a secret to tell)

Catamaran tours in Punta Cana to the Natural Swimming Pool

3) Combo jungle buggies & Punta Cana zipline

This tour package in Punta Cana consisting of an ATV buggy tour through the lush and tropical Anamuya Mountains and one of the best ziplines in the area makes it to the Top 5 as well – with a score of 4.89 out of 5 points. It is the fourth-best excursion in Punta Cana which does have at least 150 reviews, a score of more than 4.7 and doesn’t involve any animal activities.

This Punta Cana excursion combo with zipline and buggy tour * starts with a fun and adventurous drive through the Anamuya Mountains, where you’ll explore the backcountry, see local villages and admire the stunning nature. You are also going to visit the so-called Casa del Coco, where you’ll learn everything about the coconut and other local products such as coffee and cocoa. Compared to other dune buggy tours in Punta Cana , this ATV adventure leads you through unexplored paths away from the typical buggy trails around Playa Macao , even though it could be a tad more exciting.

Afterwards, you’ll enjoy a full 12-cable zipline circuit including some of the longest ziplines in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic. It is the best-rated zipline in Punta Cana and guarantees a lot of fun and adrenaline plus amazing views on the lush countryside.

This is a combo excursion. The big advantage here is that you only leave your Punta Cana all-inclusive resort once and combine two tours instead of heading into the same area on two consecutive days. These Punta Cana tour packages save you time and money – and will guarantee you a blast as you can see in the reviews. It is also perfectly suitable as a Punta Cana family excursion , especially when traveling with older kids (10 and older).

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: canopy adventures in Punta Cana and ATV buggy tours are some of the most popular excursions in Punta Cana – and this tour package combines both activities! Rating (as of December 202 3): 4.89/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: – The best ziplines in Punta Cana – your canopy adventure in paradise! – The best dune buggy adventure tours in Punta Cana (tested and hand-picked)

ATV adventure and dune buggy tour in Punta Canas Anamuya Mountains

4) Punta Cana ziplining

If you are not interested in the ATV part of the tour package presented above and just would like to do the zipline excursion – absolutely no problem, as this is super awesome as well. This ziplining excursion is Punta Cana’s favorite * as it combines some of the longest ziplines in the country with beautiful views of the lush vegetation. Furthermore, there are some free-style cables and a couple’s zipline, so you can race against each other.

This zipline excursion is particularly perfect for those who are looking for a 12-cable zipline tour in Punta Cana, as most other ziplines in Punta Cana are combined with other activities or are just offering a pretty short circuit of 6 or 8 cables.

Among all canopy adventures in Punta Cana , this is the zipline circuit with the most beautiful views and the lushest vegetation, but it is not the craziest one. If you are prefering a zipline with some serious water action (where you are getting soaking wet), check the theme park section below in this Punta Cana excursion guide for further information.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: Punta Canas most popular zipline with 90% 5-star reviews Rating (as of December 202 3): 4.7/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: the best ziplines in Punta Cana – your canopy adventure in paradise!

Ziplining Adventure in Punta Cana in the Anamuya Mountains

Another Punta Cana excursion combo makes it into the Top 10 of the best-reviewed tours in Punta Cana. This combination tour package of dune buggies and a party boat * gets a 4.76 out of 5 points and therefore is the second-best tour package in Punta Cana.

The first part is one of the typical Punta Cana dune buggy excursions , leading you through prepared off-road trails with lots of mud and puddles. Be prepared to get wet and dirty. You’ll also visit a couple of places like a typical Dominican ranch where you’ll see how cocoa pods, cinnamon and coffee is harvested and/or dried. Those places are a bit touristy as a lot of vendors are approaching you, but if you have never seen local farms or the Dominican fruits and produce, it is worth getting to know those products. You’ll also visit Macao Beach , one of the most beautiful beaches in Punta Cana .

The second part of the tour (which theoretically could be also on a different day if you prefer) is a typical Punta Cana party boat as you can read here . Compared to the premium snorkeling excursion presented above, you’ll visit the regular snorkeling spot and might have a catamaran packed with people – which is great if you would like to have a massive party. The booze cruises from Bavaro and Punta Cana are living up to their name and are not without a reason one of the most popular excursions in Punta Cana. However, the name of this tour should be better “Party Boat and Dune Buggy Adventure” instead of “Snorkeling Cruise and Dune Buggy Adventure” as the snorkeling part of this excursion is subpar at maximum.

Still, you are getting two excursions for the price of one so you can consider this Punta Cana tour if you are traveling Punta Cana on a budget and would like to get more bang for the buck.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: two tours for the price of one Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.76/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: – The best dune buggy adventure tours in Punta Cana (tested and hand-picked) – The best Punta Cana catamaran tours – booze cruises, private catamarans, party boats & more – Snorkeling in Punta Cana – the best spots and reefs (+ a secret to tell)

Dune Buggy Excursion in Punta Cana with Xtreme Buggy Adventures

The cheapest excursions in Punta Cana

While you can find the best excursions in Punta Cana according to the travelers’ ratings above, I understand that you do not always want to spend close to 100 USD or more per person for a single activity. For those who are traveling to Punta Cana on a budget , there are also several tours in Punta Cana available for under 50 USD – kind of low-budget excursions.

The tours in Punta Cana which are available for under 50 USD are mostly dune buggy adventures , but there are some further recommendable options available. Currently, a countryside safari is available * for 49 USD as well as an authentic village walk with a local guide *, which shows you the local countryside and small hidden villages

If you’re lucky, you can also find a catamaran tour for under 50 USD *.

As all of those cheap tours in Punta Cana are explained further below. I am just leaving you here a couple of tours to book in case you are traveling on a budge t. For any questions, check the sections below or write me a comment at the end of the article.

New Punta Cana excursions for 2024

Regular visitors to Punta Cana might get bored by the repeating zipline excursions , dune buggy tours , or theme parks in Punta Cana . On the other side,  it is sometimes hard to find new things to do in Punta Cana as there is such an incredibly high amount of offers that it is difficult to find new tours in Punta Cana.

For this reason, I have added this new category here to the 2024 edition of the best Punta Cana tours with some hand-selected tours that have debuted recently, mostly in 2023 and are therefore the newest excursions in Punta Cana for 2024.

6) Katmandu Park Punta Cana

Punta Cana’s newest (and maybe hottest) excursion is without a doubt Katmandu Park Punta Cana . This is a new theme park in Punta Cana , consisting of different activities and challenges, perfect for those who love interactive games and thrilling outdoor adventures. There is a total of 8 attractions at Katmandu Punta Cana , among them 5 indoor and 3 outdoor. Highlights are without a doubt the challenging high-rope course, the two 18-hole adventure golf circuits and the “Voyage of the Fathom Wanderer” with the first sunken theater.

Katmandu Park Punta Cana * is located in the heart of Bavaro. All the attractions can be also visited individually for usually around 10-20 USD each and you can walk around the park without paying (particularly if staying at closeby resorts such as Melia Punta Cana , Secrets Royal Beach or Lopesan Costa Bavaro ), the most practical way to visit this Punta Cana theme park is an excursion from your resort, which includes round-trip transfers and full-day access to all the attractions at Katmandu . Drinks and food are also available for reasonable prices.

By the way, as some of the activities at the park are indoors, Katmandu Park Punta Cana is also a great thing to do if it rains in Punta Cana.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: Punta Cana’s newest theme park with unique and world-class indoor and outdoor attractions Rating (as of December 2023): 4.50/5.00 (Google and Tripadvisor) Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here *

Minigolf Experience at Katmandu Park Punta Cana

7) Isla Saona Snorkeling Tour

It is pretty hard to believe that I can list this one as a new Punta Cana tour for 2024, but it is indeed unique and I haven’t seen it before (and the tour seems to have debuted only in 2022/2023). I always tell people that they should NOT go to Saona Island if their only concern is snorkeling in Punta Cana as the typical snorkeling stops during most of the Isla Saona excursions are mediocre at most (if at all).

However, now there is an excursion from Punta Cana that combines a great snorkeling experience at various spots AND a great Saona Island tour: this snorkeling tour to Saona Island *, which also includes a stop at remote and pristine Cayo Raton and Isla Catalinita (not to be confused with Isla Catalina), which are hardly visited by any tours. Usually, your only chance to get there is by private speedboat.

Therefore, this tour is one of my highlights among the Punta Cana excursions 2024 (even though I have not done it on my own yet) as those places are simply incredibly beautiful, off-the-beaten-track and offer great snorkeling opportunities – much better than in Punta Cana. Furthermore, it allows you to experience the Dominican Republic’s underwater world AND to see the paradisiacal Saona Island .

8) Lobster Master Class & Taino Tasting Menu

The Dominican Republic has many typical foods and dishes and one most visitors are craving about is lobster. Most all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana don’t offer lobster within their all-inclusive meal plan (except for a few upscale resorts such as Finest Punta Cana , where Lobster is served for dinner in their seafood restaurant), but now you have the chance to participate in a unique lobster experience in Punta Cana.

At this personalized and small-group lobster master class *, you learn how to make lobster, prepare one, have fresh ceviche and in the end enjoy your super fresh and large lobster which was prepared by you under the supervision of an experienced chef. I loved the small group, the professional presentation and the super delicious taste of the food during this experience.

If you’re not that much of a lobster fan but still would love to experience Dominican cuisine in a very special way, you can also take part in a gourmet experience, where you get to sample 8 different plates from all over the Dominican culinary history. This unique Taino tasting menu * is presented in the cozy and comfortable environment of a cooking lounge and is paired with some educational information. Drinks are optional and for an extra charge.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: immerse yourself in the culinary highlights of the Dominican Republic Rating (as of December 2023): n/a Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here for the Lobster Master Class and here for the Taino Tasting Menu *

9) Evening Buggy Tour with Cenote & Dancing Show

Dune buggy tours are one of the first Punta Cana excursions most visitors are doing on their holiday in the Dominican Republic. It is fun, easy to book and usually not very expensive, hence perfect for first-time visitors. However, if you want to make this buggy experience more special or are looking for a just recently introduced excursion in Punta Cana, this Buggy Tour at night * with a visit to a Punta Cana cenote and a performance of a local show group with music and dancing might be the perfect option for you.

The tour also includes dinner, hence it might be the perfect choice if you’re not super-convinced by the food options of your resort. 😉 This new Punta Cana excursion for 2024 is also perfect if you’re on the one hand a pool lover and don’t want to miss any of your days in the resort, but on the other hand, don’t like the evening entertainment of your hotel that much. This will be a night to remember, especially as feedback in our Facebook group on this tour has been excellent.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: fun, action, local show and food during this night tour in Punta Cana – what else do you want for an unforgettable outing? Rating (as of December 2023): n/a Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here *

ATV adventure and dune buggy tour in Punta Canas Anamuya Mountains

An E-bike tour in Punta Cana is not completely new, as we have already mentioned one option further below in our section about the best Punta Cana excursions for adventurers and active travelers. However, what’s new for 2024 is this e-bike city tour where you get to see the busy and beautiful areas of Punta Cana’s center, Bavaro.

This E-bike tour through the city * starts with a pick-up from your resort and includes some of the typical places every inhabitant of Bavaro and Punta Cana goes to, among them Bavaro Beach , Katmandu Park , Playa Bibijagua, Caribbean Lake Park, Coco Bongo Punta Cana (respectively Congo Bar) and Downtown Punta Cana. At most of these places, you have a stop of around 15-20 minutes to get to know the area or take photos before heading on to the next stop.

Finally, this e-bike tour in Punta Cana is the perfect way to explore the city. As everything in the area is not walkable due to the distance (one reason why there is no walking tour in Punta Cana), hitting the road with an e-bike is the ideal solution to get to know more about the daily life of the Dominicans in Punta Cana.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions:  the best way to get to know the local areas Rating (as of December 2023):  5.0/5.0 Tour dates and prices:   check prices and availability here *

The best Punta Cana excursions for nature lovers

The Dominican Republic is not only famous for its beautiful beaches in Punta Cana and elsewhere in the country, but also for a lot of stunning natural sights. Therefore, you definitely should head on one of the following tours, which are some of the top excursions in Punta Cana for nature lovers. My personal top picks are without a doubt Isla Saona and Los Haitises National Park .

11) Isla Saona (standard) tour

Yes, Saona Island is pretty touristy with dozens of tour boats visiting the island every day. But you know what? It is absolutely worth it, as the nature expecting you here is stunning. You’ll see some of the most paradisical beaches in the Dominican Republic , some of the most turquoise waters in the Caribbean and gorgeous scenery with swaying palm trees, a natural swimming pool and island vibe everywhere. And if you walk a little bit to the left or to the right from where your group is staying at Saona, you even have the chance to discover some pristine beaches.

Nearly all tours to Isla Saona include transfers from your hotel, one trip by catamaran, one trip by speed boat, lunch, entertainment and drinks. The same goes for the Saona Island excursion featured here *, which is particularly affordable considering everything is included in this full-day trip from Punta Cana. This cruise has some kind of party boat vibe, so if you are more the quiet nature lover, consider booking one of the Isla Saona Discovery Tours *, which are focusing more on exploring different places (incl. Mano Juan and Canto de la Playa) than simply entertaining the people.

Check out my detailed Isla Saona guide to get to know the differences between the various Isla Saona excursions from Punta Cana. I have visited Saona at least four times in the meantime with different tour packages from Punta Cana and I still love the island. 🙂

It is also easily possible to book Isla Saona as a Cap Cana excursion, including transfers from the hotel in this area. You can use the same booking link from the button below.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: Isla Saona is not without a reason the most popular tourist attraction in the Dominican Republic. It is simply stunning and a must-do excursion in Punta Cana! Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.15/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: – Excursion to Isla Saona – everything you need to know for your hassle-free Saona Island Tour 2021 – How to find the best Private Tours to Isla Saona and Isla Catalina? – The best beaches in the Dominican Republic (incl. map)

12) Isla Catalina excursion (incl. snorkeling)

If you are still not getting familiar with the idea of visiting Isla Saona , why not visiting Isla Catalina , the little and less-crowded neighbor of Saona Island. On this activity, one of the best catamaran tours in the Dominican Republic, you have the advantage that both ways are done by catamaran, allowing you more time to enjoy this Caribbean cruise vibe you are so much looking forward to. Furthermore, compared to the Isla Saona tour , this excursion to Isla Catalina * includes a snorkeling stop, one of the best snorkeling options in Punta Cana (even though it is rather short). Furthermore, there are a few mini trails on the island you can explore.

Ocean + snorkeling + island sounds like a good combination for nature lovers, doesn’t it? You can find more information and the best Isla Catalina tours from Punta Cana in my full Isla Catalina guide .

In case you’re looking for a better experience than the regular Isla Catalina Tour (which has a rating of 4,0/5.00), you can also book a premium tour to Isla Catalina * which has much better service, attention to detail, a more upscale bar and lunch as well as two snorkeling stops instead just one – plus, the group is usually much smaller, guaranteeing a more personal experience. This is also reflected in the outstanding customer reviews, as the tour is scoring an amazing 4,9 out of 5 points. Just note that for this premium excursion transfers from Punta Cana have to be paid extra when staying in Punta Canas resorts .

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: Isla Catalina is a beautiful alternative to Isla Saona and a perfect option if you are looking for a catamaran tour from Punta Cana with different natural attractions. Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.0/5.00 (regular tour) / 4.89/5.00 (premium tour) Tour dates and prices: – check prices and availability here * (regular tour) – check prices and availability here * (premium tour) Further information: – Isla Catalina – less-frequented island excursion to paradise – How to find the best Private Tours to Isla Saona and Isla Catalina?

13) Los Haitises National Park

If you love to see the wildlife of the Dominican Republic, a Punta Cana excursion to Los Haitises National Park might be a great fit. Los Haitises National Park is one of the national parks in the Dominican Republic with the greatest biodiversity in the country. During a tour through the park by boat, you can not only see the mystic islands, the rugged landscape or ancient caves with centuries-old rock paintings from the native inhabitants but also spot fantastic wildlife such as frigate birds, manatees and pelicans – one of the best tours in Punta Cana for nature lovers! Los Haitises is also the most impressive national park you can reach from Punta Cana.

This Los Haitises excursion from Punta Cana * includes the transfer from your accommodation or all-inclusive resort , the boat trip through the national park and additional stops on the way. The stops are varying a bit, but at the time of writing, they are including two amazing additional nature spots, which makes it one of the best Punta Cana tours and excursions when it comes to nature: Montaña Redonda (see the explanation in the next entry of this list of the best Punta Cana tours) and Salto de la Yanigua (one of Punta Canas’ beautiful waterfalls ). Still, make sure to read the tour description when booking as the additional stops might change over time, they are not set in stone.

Los Haitises is one of the longer Punta Cana day trips as it involves some driving time (approx. 2.5 hours per way), but it is worth it considering the stunning nature you are going to see.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: a full-day out in nature with several natural attractions as hardly any other tour in Punta Cana can offer it  Rating (as of Dec ember 202 3): 4.71/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: Los Haitises National Park – a wonderful excursion or road trip from Punta Cana

14) Montana Redonda

If you feel that Los Haitises National Park is too far for you (after all, it is still a 2.5-hour drive on the bus each way), you can also book a Montana Redonda tour *, which is one of the most unique excursions in Punta Cana.

Montaña Redonda is a one-of-a-kind attraction in Punta Cana. It is a mountain with a spectacular 360-degree panorama surrounded by lush vegetation and untouched nature. The special features of Montaña Redonda are its giant swings and the cozy hammocks, both being set up right at the edge of the mountain, which allows for fantastic photo opportunities you can’t get anywhere else. When using the swings, you can take photos as if you are flying in the air.

To go up to Montaña Redonda, you board a safari truck at the bottom of the mountain. The drive is bumpy and a bit wild, but it’s worth it once you get to the top and can enjoy the truly gorgeous panoramic view. The use of the giant swings and hammocks at Montaña Redonda is for free. Kids will love these amenities, making Montaña Redonda a perfect kid-friendly excursion in Punta Cana .

Depending on your excursion, you can also add a stop at one of the pristine beaches in the surrounding area, such as Playa Limon or Playa Esmeralda – a truly special adventure in Punta Cana to see a mile-long virgin beach without a single person so close to all the resorts.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: the gorgeous views and the unique photo opportunities in a hardly known area make this activity one of the hidden gem tours in Punta Cana. Combined with Playa Esmeralda it is one of the top Punta Cana excursions 2024 when it comes to off-the-beaten-track activities.  Rating (as of Dec ember 202 3): 4.76/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: Montaña Redonda in Miches – the instagrammable mountain with spectacular views

15) Hoyo Azul (the Punta Cana Blue Lagoon)

The Blue Lagoon in Punta Cana is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Punta Cana. This is not without a reason, because the Blue Lagoon, which is also called Hoyo Azul, is a Mexican-style cenote with such a turquoise color that it is hard to believe. The water is crystal clear and invites for a dip. Together with the surrounding jungle vibe, a visit to Hoyo Azul in Punta Cana is simply stunning. For the most marvelous views and the best chances to be there with only a few other guests (or alone if you’re very lucky) head to Hoyo Azul first thing in the morning when entering Scape Park Punta Cana .

It is not possible to visit the Blue Lagoon on your own which is a bit of a bummer. It is part of Scape Park Cap Cana and you must book a full-day ticket to gain access *. Therefore, the easiest option to visit Hoyo Azul is to book a full-service excursion from Punta Cana to Scape Park Cap Cana, which not only includes the Blue Lagoon, but also an exciting ziplining adventure (incl. water adventure at the end), a cave tour, stunning pools, an artificial waterfall, some cultural immersion and a visit to another underground lagoon. It is a multi-activity tour package from Punta Cana, which guarantees an exciting day and many long-lasting memories. Especially the zipline is unique, as you can read in my detailed Scape Park Punta Cana review . Below you also find further information about Punta Canas’ theme parks and multi-activity combo packages.

Scape Park Cap Cana isn’t for those traveling on a budget nor if you don’t like touristy theme parks, but if you want to admire the stunning beauty of Hoyo Azul , it is worth booking this Cap Cana excursion.

16) Samaná Excursion from Punta Cana (El Limón Waterfall / Cayo Levantado)

Similar to Los Haitises , this tour from Punta Cana is a long excursion where you do lots of sightseeing and see many beautiful natural attractions in the Dominican Republic.

Samaná is a province in the northeast of the Dominican Republic and is often considered one of the most beautiful regions in the country. And indeed, the peninsula has so many pristine beaches , quaint fishing villages and refreshing waterfalls that you can easily spend a couple of days here, as you can also read in this Samaná road-trip itinerary .

But if you are on vacation in Punta Cana and would like to explore Samaná just for a day, there are some options for you as well, thanks to the frequent excursions in Punta Cana which bring you to Samaná by bus and boat *, taking a huge shortcut opposed to when visiting Samaná from Punta Cana just on the road .

During these Punta Cana tours and excursions to Samaná, you are visiting one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Dominican Republic, Salto El Limón, and the famous island and beach of Cayo Levantado , which is also known as Bacardi Island. Furthermore, you are getting some information about the countryside, see typical fisherman villages and can enjoy a boat ride with a motor catamaran over the Bay of Samaná.

This is a long excursion from Punta Cana for around 12 hours, but one with many different impressions. If you want to cut the time spent on the bus, you can also book the Samaná Explorer from Punta Cana by plane *.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: this Punta Cana tour combines the best highlights of the Samaná peninsula in one excursion Rating (as of December 202 3): 3.64/5.00 (by bus and boat) / 3.85/5.00 (by plane) Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * (bus and boat) or here for the plane excursion * Further information: Salto El Limón from Punta Cana and for Samaná travelers – insider tips, excursions, hiking trails, etc.

17) Whalewatching from Punta Cana

Whale watching is one of the most popular and best tours in Punta Cana and is a must-do excursion during your vacation in the Dominican Republic. However, please note that whale watching is only available from January to March, during the mating season of the humpback whales. If you are visiting the Dominican Republic during these months, make sure to put whale watching on the No. 1 spot of your things to do in Punta Cana list.

The whale watching excursions in Punta Cana lead you to the Bay of Samaná, where the humpback whales are coming back every year to give birth to their babies in the warm waters and help them growing up for the first weeks. The unique thing about whale watching in the Dominican Republic is basically that you have a guarantee to see whales. There are so many of them and often they are jumping, playing or swimming visibly in the water so that you have plenty of sightings during the majority of the tours. I have always spotted at least a dozen whales when I have been on tour in Samaná.

After whale watching, this popular top excursion from Punta Cana * continues with some of the best attractions of the Samaná peninsula . Depending on your day of the booking (check the tour description), this will either be a hike respectively horseback ride to the gorgeous waterfall of Salto El Limón or a trip to Cayo Levantado for some beach and relaxation time at Samaná ’s Bacardi Island.

Another great thing about this Punta Cana tour is that it fully complies with the regulations of the Dominican government to protect the animals. Continue reading here if you are interested in the details .

If you want to combine this Punta Cana excursion with a VIP experience, you can also book a whale watching excursion from Punta Cana by plane . ( check here the details of the whale watching tour by plane *)

All whale watching tours are possible with pickup anywhere in the Punta Cana area, including Cap Cana excursions and in Bavaro.

The best excursions in Punta Cana for adventure lovers and active travelers

Besides the best Punta Cana tours and excursions presented above for nature lovers, there are also more active ways of getting to know Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic – for example through hiking , mountain biking, waterfall excursions or other adventures in Punta Cana . I am a particular fan of hiking and waterfalls in the Dominican Republic, as it is a unique feeling to get away from it all and connect 100% with nature. Pro tip: always bring plenty of water and mosquito repellent when heading out into the wilderness.

18) Waterfall excursions in Punta Cana

There are so many amazing waterfalls in the Dominican Republic, even close to Punta Cana as you can see in my Punta Cana waterfall guide . Unfortunately, many of them are only possible through adventurous hikes or DIY road trips .

The author Chris in the Dominican Republic

Right now, three waterfall tours in Punta Cana are possible to book in a full-service excursion including transfers from and to your hotel: Salto El Limón , Salto Yanigua and – great news for adventurers – since 2022 also the famous Salto de la Jalda waterfall hike, the highest waterfall of the Dominican Republic. The first two are part of activities already mentioned in this Punta Cana excursion guide, the latter one is one of the most rewarding hikes in the Dominican Republic.

Comparing the first two excursions, Salto Yanigua is included in the Los Haitises excursion from Punta Cana *, Salto El Limón gets visited through the Samaná Explorer tour from Punta Cana *. The more picturesque option of both is Salto El Limón waterfall. If you prefer a tour off-the-beaten-track, Salto Yanigua is your best bet. Both waterfalls are more than 2 hours away from Punta Cana, so they belong to some of the longer Punta Cana day trips .

The real waterfall excursion in Punta Cana, however, is the one to Salto de la Jalda. This is a unique experience and not suitable for the faint-hearted. It’s a long (but mostly flat) hike to one of the remotest waterfalls in the Punta Cana area. It’s a 10-mile hike return, hence you should be considerably fit doing this trip. However, you don’t have to worry about any logistics on this tour from Punta Cana to Salto de la Jalda *, as you will be picked up in your all-inclusive hotel and your guide will take care of heading to the waterfall together with you.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: waterfalls in the Dominican Republic are some of the most amazing natural attractions you can visit during your Punta Cana vacation Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.70/5.00 (Salto La Yanigua), 3.64/5.00 (Salto El Limón), 4.87/5.00 (Salto de la Jalda) Tour dates and prices: – check prices and availability here * (Salto La Yanigua) – check prices and availability here * (Salto El Limón) – check prices and availability here * (Salto de la Jalda) Further information: – All waterfalls reachable from Punta Cana in under 3 hours – Salto El Limón from Punta Cana and for Samaná travelers – Salto de la Jalda – the highest waterfall in the Caribbean

19) Hiking tours in Punta Cana

You can also visit some of the waterfalls in Punta Cana on your own, but usually, this is quite difficult as a visitor as most trails are not marked, so you need proper hiking and GPS experience.

However, this doesn’t have to refrain you from going on a hike, as there are fully guided hiking excursions in Punta Cana , which are some of the best options for tours in Punta Cana to get to know the untouched nature in the backcountry. Those places are also far away from every tourist trail, so you can be sure to explore Punta Cana off-the-beaten-track.

The best Punta Cana excursion 2024 for hiking * takes you to the Anamuya Mountains, a smaller mountain range located close to Punta Cana, with lush vegetation, stunning nature and beautiful trails. You’ll be accompanied by a local and professional guide, who explains to you all the interesting stories about plants and fruits you are going to see along the way. This is a 100% authentic hike in an area where we as locals also love to go hiking – a true Punta Cana adventure tour.

20) E-Bike and mountain bike excursion in Punta Cana

If you prefer to be on a bike rather than walking, Punta Canas’ excursions get you covered as well as there is a mountain bike tour in Punta Cana * including pick-up at your hotel, where you are going to explore the surrounding countryside, remote off-road trails and local villages. Depending on your fitness level, you can choose if you’d like to do this Punta Cana tour with an e-bike or with a mountain bike. Furthermore, you are going to pedal to Macao Beach , one of the most precious beaches in Punta Cana .

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: a tour through Punta Cana’s countryside for various levels of fitness Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.73/5.00  Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here *

Scape Park Cap Cana, a tropical theme park in Punta Cana

Punta Cana is not the most popular surfing spot in the Dominican Republic (the No. 1 in the country is Cabarete), but it does offer decent conditions for beginners and everyone who doesn’t need monstrous waves to have fun. The place to surf is Macao Beach where you can also take some surfing lessons *, a great alternative to the typical Punta Cana excursion. Furthermore, this is a great family-friendly activity, especially if you are traveling to Punta Cana with teens which are otherwise hard to entertain.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: a great alternative option if you don’t like the typical tourist excursions in Punta Cana Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.93/5.00  Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here *

Fun & action tours and excursions in Punta Cana

If you are not that much interested in the nature or culture of the Dominican Republic, but still want to leave the resort for some fun-filled Punta Cana activities or adrenaline-filled action tours, there are a lot of Punta Cana tours and excursions where you’ll have a blast. Just think of parasailing, buggy tours , a party boat trip or a night out at Punta Cana’s most famous nightclub, Coco Bongo .

22) Punta Cana party boat & catamaran tours

The most popular tour in Punta Cana when it comes to fun and party excursions is the option to go on a catamaran and have fun on a party boat excursion in Punta Cana . It includes snorkeling, cruising over the Caribbean Sea, partying on the boat and a stop at the natural swimming pool, a place in the ocean with just waist-deep water where many boats are meeting to continue the party.

Be prepared to get drunk (if you want) and socialize with like-minded fellow travelers.

While most booze cruises include a pick-up everywhere in Punta Cana, you can also get a specific Cap Cana excursion by catamaran * which starts right in Cap Cana and runs along the shores of southern Punta Cana.

23) Parasailing in Punta Cana

Another fun and action-filled excursion in Punta Cana on the water is a parasailing tour *, albeit it is a much shorter adventure in Punta Cana . Even though the tour takes 2-3 hours including transfers, time on the boat, explanations, etc., the actual parasailing experience high up in the air usually only lasts around 10 to 15 minutes.

Even the time is short, it still is great fun to fly over the ocean, see the blue and turquoise colors of the Caribbean sea, feel the breeze in your face and watch the endless beaches and all-inclusive resorts of Punta Cana from the sky. It is a perfect excursion to do in Punta Cana if you don’t want to spend the whole day on the bus and are just looking for a quick Punta Cana adventure .

24) Original Xtreme dune buggy tour in Punta Cana

Dune buggy tours in Punta Cana are among the most famous tours in Bavaro, Cap Cana and the surrounding area. You get wet, you get muddy, see different parts of Punta Cana and you’ll have a blast.

However, for this list of the best Punta Cana excursions 2022 and 2023 I’d like to recommend you a very special dune buggy tour – probably the best you can find in the entire Dominican Republic. Instead of driving in a line with dozens of other buggies on trails leading you around a couple of farms and ranches, you shall consider the unique and truly authentic Xtreme buggy tour, which leads you through the countryside, passing local villages and seeing totally different corners of the Dominican Republic than with a standard dune buggy tour in Punta Cana .

The Xtreme buggy tour is a bit more pricey, but also comes with several advantages. Perfectly maintained vehicles, original Volkswagen engine dune buggies with manual stick shift and groups with a maximum of 4 buggies are well worth the extra money. You are getting a customized service you can’t expect on any other tour.

Xtreme Buggy Punta Cana does have two different tours on offer:  – a half-day tour to Macao Beach *, local villages and hidden spots in the countryside – a full-day tour (more than 50 miles!) to pristine beaches *, off-the-beaten-track highlights, authentic cities and refreshing rivers or waterfalls

This Punta Cana tour is definitely not just a random buggy excursion, it is also one of the top excursions in Punta Cana (especially the full-day tour) to get an authentic impression of the country, the culture and the people.

My personal tip: if you don’t know how to drive with a manual stick shift, check out the next excursion recommendation below, the ATV tour in Punta Cana .

25) ATV Tour in Punta Cana

If the recommended Xtreme Buggy Tour is too much (or too pricey for you), you can also check out the various ATV excursions in Punta Cana , where you can speed with all-terrain vehicles over off-road-trails through the pristine countryside.

A particular recommendable ATV excursion in Punta Cana is the Flintstones tour *, which brings you away from all the typical buggy trails into the real Dominican backcountry. You are visiting a very tiny remote village without any pushy sellers, head to an impressive cave without other tourist groups and finally can see a replica of where the Flintstones used to live – a little bit kitschy, but still very funny, especially if you have watched the Flintstones when you were a child.

It is one of the best Punta Cana activities when it comes to ATVs, so make sure to check out this excursion on your trip to the Dominican Republic to have a real Punta Cana adventure .

Please note that it is currently not possible to book the Flintstones Adventure with a Polaris / ATV. Instead, you can book the regular Flintstones dune buggy adventure and upgrade eto an ATV on spot. If I remember right, the surcharge was around 30 USD.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: explore with an ATV off-the-beaten-track where other tour groups are not going Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.63/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: the best dune buggy adventure tours in Punta Cana (tested and hand-picked)

Flintstone Buggy Adventure in Punta Cana

Ok, so we mentioned a lot of adrenaline-filled excursions and adventure tours in Punta Cana on the water and during the day. Would you like to continue having fun at night as well, then you have to visit Coco Bongo in Punta Cana *, which is the most famous entertainment show and nightclub in the area. Even though it is mainly made for tourists, also a lot of locals are heading to Coco Bongo , especially at the Congo Bar, which is kind of a separate bar beside the show.

Coco Bongo Punta Cana is a huge entertainment venue and disco, which is presenting an amazing show every night full of atmosphere, with lots of colors and impressive dance performances. In between the show acts, the whole crowd is dancing to the sounds of the DJ, enjoying (basic) drinks from the open bar. It is simply a unique place to have a great time at night if you love nightlife and clubbing and want to leave your all-inclusive resort to party. For all bookings, transfers from and to your hotel are included, allowing you around 6 hours at the Coco Bongo venue. Drinks are included at Coco Bongo, but not at Congo Bar. You can find more information about this unique Punta Cana nightlife experience in the extensive Coco Bongo review .

As with nearly all the excursions from this comprehensive list here, pick-ups from hotels and all-inclusive resorts in the entire Punta Cana area are included. Therefore, Coco Bongo is a perfect Uvero Alto or Cap Cana excursion likewise, even though the venue is located in the Bavaro area of Punta Cana.

The best culture tours in Punta Cana

If you are seriously interested in getting immersed in the Dominican culture, there are also sufficient options for you. While there are some excursions in Punta Cana which just give you a quick overview of how the people are living, others are providing better and deeper insight. Let’s have a look at the best excursions in Punta Cana and Bavaro when it comes to culture, traditions and the Dominican people.

27) Santo Domingo city tour from Punta Cana

When it comes to things to do in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo is one of the most important places to mention as it combines the stunning beauty of its UNESCO awarded colonial zone with an unparalleled colonial background. Counting with such historical importance, Santo Domingo is also one of the best Punta Cana tours when it comes to culture, as you can immerse yourself in the local life and at the same time enjoy the stunning beauty of the Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo .

Having lived for 4 years right in Santo Domingo , I can tell you that the colonial zone is much more than a tourist attraction in the Dominican Republic. It is a place where Dominicans love to hang out, spend their weekends and enjoy their time with friends. Besides the colonial vibe, you can also enjoy several cozy coffee shops, family-owned art shops or various souvenir stores where you get much better prices than in Punta Cana .

This Punta Cana excursion to Santo Domingo * is done by bus, bringing you straight into the Colonial Zone. It is a long 2.5-3 hours bus ride though and therefore a full Punta Cana day trip , but once there, you can enjoy the various amenities of the Zona Colonial . While visiting a couple of historic places with your guide, you are also going to have free time to explore the hidden gems of the area on your own.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: the colonial city of Santo Domingo is offering an unparalleled combination of colonial vibes and Dominican life Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.74/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information:  – 10 reasons why you should visit the Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo – 23 exciting things to do in Santo Domingo (and 5 NOT to do)

28) Higuey city tour from Punta Cana

If you feel that Santo Domingo is too far away and you don’t want to spend that much time on the bus, you can also visit Higuey on an excursion from Punta Cana, which is just around an hour away. Higuey doesn’t offer colorful buildings or a colonial vibe, but you can see 100% of the Dominican life as Higuey is a low-key working-class city, the 9th biggest in the Dominican Republic (if counting Santo Domingo as 1 city and not as 4 cities according to the provincial boundaries). Furthermore, Higuey is home to the most important church in the Dominican Republic, the impressive Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia.

During a Punta Cana Tour to Higuey *, you will not only visit the cathedral, but also a local market, where you can buy a lot of stuff for daily life for very cheap prices. While souvenirs might be rare at these markets, it is a great opportunity to see the local life and watch the challenges the Dominicans encounter in their day-to-day business. You also get an idea of the local produce as well as the prices of food and everyday items , which aren’t cheap in the Dominican Republic considering that the minimum wage is just around 250-400 USD per month.

Higuey is a chaotic and bustling city, so be prepared for some chaos, trash and many people. But after all, this is the best Punta Cana tour if you want to see the authentic Dominican life, but don’t want to spend hours on the bus.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: 100% authentic experience of a Dominican working-class city Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.9/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * (note that the price shown in the first step is per group, not per person)

29) Culture and countryside tour

If you want to combine some education about the Dominican Republic with stunning views of local villages and the lush tropical nature, the culture and countryside excursions in Punta Cana are the perfect choice for you. Sometimes they are also referred to as safari tours in Punta Cana, even though there is no correlation with a typical safari except that you are sitting in a kind of safari truck.

For this kind of tour, I’d recommend you one of the most established culture and countryside tours in Punta Cana for years *, on the same time the best Punta Cana excursion 2024 for this particular type of tour. This popular tour includes everything to give you a comprehensive overview of the Dominican Republics’ culture, produce and characteristics. This tour is not a particularly deep immersion into local culture, but it is a great activity for first-timers to Punta Cana.

You’ll start passing through several local villages before visiting a traditional house to get to know more about how the people live and how they make coffee or chocolate. You can also taste different local fruits from the garden. The excursion continues by visiting various other places that are typical for the Dominican Republic or that produce well-known products of the country, for example, a sugar cane field where the distillation of rum is explained or a little cigar rolling station. During the trip, you can also enjoy various beautiful views of the Anamuya Mountains and the lush countryside. At the end of this Punta Cana culture tour and safari, you are visiting Macao Beach , one of Punta Canas’ most beautiful beaches and a local’s favorite as it is easily accessible by the public.

The best culinary tours in Punta Cana

If you’re traveling to Punta Cana because of food and drinks, you might have to look a bit further as most Punta Cana resorts are only serving a few Dominican specialties along with a large selection of international food. However, there are some pretty cool Punta Cana tours about the Dominican Republics’ delicacies, treats and produce.

30) Punta Cana Rum Tour

My favorite excursion in Punta Cana when it comes to the Dominican Republics’ local specialties is this professional rum tasting *. It is so much more than the typical stop at some of the excursions where you’re going to sample a cheap rum, it is actually a professional Punta Cana rum tasting with some of the best-aged rums in the Dominican Republic. You’ll get to try 4 high-class rums, which are all those kinds of rums even Dominicans hardly drink because they’re too expensive. The tasting is accompanied by a chief taster, who is explaining everything about the differences in smell, taste, body and after-taste. Furthermore, you have some delicacies to enrich the flavor of the rums, such as macadamia nuts, dark chocolate or honey. Last but not least, the ambiance at this rum tour in Punta Cana is top-notch, as the rum tasting is held in a pretty cool bar and tasting lab, hence it is a super cool experience you can have with this particular rum tour in Punta Cana.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions:  a well-sophisticated rum tasting with premium rums, which doesn’t lack fun and enjoyment Rating (as of December 2023 ):  4.75/5.00 Tour dates and prices:   check prices and availability here * Further information: rum tours in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic

31) Chocolate Workshop

If you are not that much into alcohol, you can also immerse yourself in another famous product from the Dominican Republic. This culinary excursion in Punta Cana explains everything about cocoa and chocolate production. You’re not only going to learn everything about this sweet delight (even though cocoa is actually bitter), but also make your very own chocolate bar. This chocolate workshop * is a perfect excursion in Punta Cana, particularly for a rainy day, but also kids will love this Punta Cana tour as a unique thing to do in Punta Cana as a family .

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions:  an interesting culinary experience with one of the most famous local products Rating (as of December 2023 ):  4.45/5.00 Tour dates and prices:   check prices and availability here *

A cacao bean in the Dominican Republic

One kind of this activity is already presented above in the section with the best new excursions in Punta Cana 2024. There are different options available. Besides the lobster master class already described earlier, you can also learn to prepare the national dish of the Dominican Republic, Sancocho, or a fresh local fish – this authentic Dominican cooking class * makes it possible. You are going to meet your host for this cooking class, who will explain to you the customs and traditions of the Dominican kitchen, tell you more about the local ingredients and show you how to prepare certain dishes of the Dominican Republic. The cool thing about this particular activity in Punta Cana is that you’re cooking together with others, but have several stoves, hence you’ll never have a dull moment.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions:  a cooking class in Punta Cana is a great way to immerse into the local culture and learn about the foodie culture Rating (as of December 2023 ):  n/a Tour dates and prices:   check prices and availability here *

The best multi-activity tours in Punta Cana (combo packages, theme parks, sightseeing and more)

You can’t decide on the activities, tours and excursions presented above? How about combining these for making it one of the best days in Punta Cana you can imagine?

Thanks to multi-activity packages and theme parks with different tours, it is possible to combine several of the best Punta Cana excursions 2023 into some of the most exciting tour packages in Punta Cana – for one or multiple days with loads of fun and endless impressions of the Dominican Republic.

Combo packages and amusement parks in Punta Cana are also perfectly suitable for those who are just visiting the Dominican Republic for a few days and don’t have time for multiple days of excursions.

33) Punta Cana theme parks

One way of achieving the challenge to experience different activities and tours in Punta Cana on one day is to visit one of the theme parks in Punta Cana . They allow you to enjoy a full day of fun and action by just paying one price, similar to the theme parks in the United States or Europe. Transfers from the all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana are also included.

Three main theme parks allow you to enjoy some of the top excursions in Punta Cana in one day: – Scape Park Punta Cana * – Bavaro Adventure Park * – La Hacienda Park * – Katmandu Park Punta Cana *

Scape Park Punta Cana is famous for its fantastic eco-splash zipline and the unique Hoyo Azul , also known as Blue Lagoon which was already presented at one of the excursion recommendations above. In my opinion, it is the most exciting theme park, but also the most commercialized one. It is located in the south of Punta Cana and marks a perfect Cap Cana excursion.

Bavaro Adventure Park is perfect if you don’t want to travel far as it is located right in Bavaro, close to most of the all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana . It allows you to pick between different activity options, among them, ziplining, a dune buggy ride , river tubing or horseback riding. It is a perfect Punta Cana family excursion as the activities are very kid-friendly and something is happening for every age.

La Hacienda Park is the most authentic option among the amusement parks in Punta Cana and offers you the most stunning impressions when it comes to nature as it is located right in the Anamuya Mountains, around an hour away from Punta Cana. They have the only chairlift in Punta Cana, a few ziplining cables (with spectacular views!) and give you an introduction to Dominican culture, among many other activities.

Katmandu Park is Punta Cana’s newest theme park and combines indoor fun with outdoor adventures, physical challenges and immersive entertainment. It is conveniently located in the center of Bavaro and a great option for a family excursion in Punta Cana .

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: theme parks are offering you a wide variety of Punta Cana activities and are perfect for families and adults Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.08/5.00 (Scape Park Cap Cana) and 5.00/5.00 (Bavaro Adventure Park) and 4.54/5.00 (La Hacienda Park) Tour dates and prices: – check prices and availability for Scape Park Cap Cana here * ( read extensive review here ) – check prices and availability for Bavaro Adventure Park here * – check prices and availability for La Hacienda Park here * – check prices and availability for Katmandu Park here * ( read extensive review here ) Further information: – Scape Park Cap Cana – a tropical theme park with a zipline and blue lagoon in Punta Cana – Punta Cana theme parks – the BIG comparison of the best amusement parks in Punta Cana – Katmandu Park Punta Cana – everything you need to know before visiting this new theme park

34) Combo Packages

Combo packages are another option to fit multiple excursions in Punta Cana into one day. Usually, those Punta Cana tour packages include several activities which are combined and save you a particular amount of transfer time as you only have to get out of your hotel once.

There are various multi-activity excursions in Punta Cana, so it is hard to recommend one specific tour as this depends on your preferences. Ziplining , dune buggy excursions, catamaran tours , horseback riding, snorkeling , Isla Saona , parasailing … a lot of activities are available through these combo packages, which saves time and money.

35) Caribbean Lake Park

Another combo option if looking for multiple activities in Punta Cana is the Caribbean Lake Park *. Furthermore, it is one of the newest excursions in Punta Cana 2024 as it was only opened in two years ago. It is a large new park around some artificial lakes with a lot of water-based activities and a pretty cool and contemporary restaurant. A Tibetan bridge, a floating circuit, zip lines, a doughnut ride and wakeboarding are just some of the attractions you can enjoy when hopping on a tour of the Caribbean Lake Park. The park is centrally located in Downtown Bavaro and just 20 minutes away from most of the hotels in the south of Punta Cana, hence it also marks a great Cap Cana excursion.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions:  one of the newest attractions in Punta Cana with a huge diversity Rating (as of December 2023 ):  3.00/5.00 Tour dates and prices:   check prices and availability here *

The Caribbean Lake Park in Downtown Punta Cana

The most unique excursions in Punta Cana

There are some excursions in Punta Cana, which are not fitting in the categories above. They might include a bit of nature, they might give you some quick information about culture, but in the end, they are one-of-a-kind because of very different reasons. This section might be expanded in the future as there are also new tours in Punta Cana popping up every now and then, but for the moment these are some of the most unique Punta Cana excursions 2024.

36) Scuba Doo in Punta Cana

If you don’t feel attracted by snorkeling in Punta Cana and don’t have a diver’s license, you can do a completely new activity which is called Scuba Doo, combining the attractive sides of both, snorkeling and scuba diving .

During a Scuba Doo excursion in Punta Cana *, you are going to dive much deeper than during a snorkeling tour . You even don’t need a mask as you get kind of a full-head helmet, which allows you to breathe, to see the marine life and to enjoy the experience. Furthermore, you are seated on a kind of machine, which carries your oxygen and allows you to move down comfortably.

This new tour in Punta Cana is not the most natural way of exploring marine life compared to snorkeling or scuba diving , but it allows you to explore the reefs and fishes much closer. Have a look at the photos to see if this Punta Cana activity is something for you. Furthermore, as this is a rather shorter and relaxed tour (the time underwater is not very long), it is also recommendable as a kid-friendly excursion in Punta Cana .

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: it is a cool and fun way to explore the underwater life of Punta Cana Rating (as of December 2023 ): 3.85/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here *

37) Explore Isla Saona with a Punta Cana helicopter tour

If you are looking for a VIP experience during your excursion in Punta Cana, one of the best options is to go on a helicopter ride in Punta Cana . This not only brings you an absolutely unique excursion, but also amazing views from above.

There are different helicopter tours in Punta Cana available. The most affordable one starts at 89 USD and takes you for a quick scenic ride around the resort area in Punta Cana .

Currently, as of December 2023, there are no helicopter excursions to Saona Island as the helicopter provider faced some organizational problems during summer 2023. The only helicopter tour currently available is the panoramic flight over Punta Cana, which can be booked here *. I’ll hope that the Saona helicopter excursion will be available soon again which is why I am leaving this section online for the moment.

My favorite helicopter excursion in Punta Cana is the one to Isla Saona *. Instead of the long trip by bus and by boat to the paradisical island, you head there straight by helicopter, including super scenic views of the coastline, the south of Punta Cana and Saona Island itself. Once at Isla Saona, you can enjoy the turquoise Caribbean Sea, a delicious lunch and some free time in the beach club.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: exploring Isla Saona by helicopter is a top-notch experience + you get some amazing views from above Rating (as of December 2023 ): n/a Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information:  – Excursion to Isla Saona – everything you need to know for your hassle-free Saona Island Tour 2021 – The best Punta Cana helicopter tours (incl. air tours and excursions by plane)

38) See the Dominican Republic from above – airplane tour from Punta Cana

Another option to see the Dominican Republic from above is by taking a Punta Cana Airplane tour . Among this kind of excursion, there are 4 different options: – Santo Domingo airplane tour from Punta Cana * – Samaná Explorer by plane from Punta Cana * – Whale watching to Samaná by plane * – Bahía de las Águilas from Punta Cana by plane *

My favorite here is the tour to Bahía de las Águilas by plane *, as it is one of the most unique excursions in Punta Cana. You fly more than an hour to see the country from above and are going to visit one of the remotest beaches in the Dominican Republic .

Bahía de las Águilas is a legendary beach due to its remote location and its 100% undeveloped area. There is not a single hotel or any bar or restaurant at this beach, which stretches for miles with turquoise water and its bright white sand. It is a beach of a completely different color compared to Punta Cana.

This airplane excursion from Punta Cana is not on the cheap side, but it is a great opportunity for a very special day.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: it is one of the most exclusive tours in Punta Cana, leading you to areas that are usually off-limits for Punta Cana visitors. Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.35/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information:  the best Punta Cana helicopter tours (incl. air tours and excursions by plane)

39) Pirate Ship Excursion

Ok, we have presented the party boats and catamaran tours in Punta Cana above, but there is a special boat you shouldn’t miss if you’re looking for a very unique excursion in Punta Cana: the Punta Cana pirate ship *. Compared to the typical catamarans, this boat is massive and impressive! You’re not only going to see the (limited) underwater world of Punta Cana while snorkeling, but you’ll also experience a cool pirates show, action-loaded battles with swords and ropes as well as a unique pirates party. This Punta Cana activity is different from what you’re used to – if it’s better than the typical party boats in Punta Cana , depends on what exactly you’re looking for.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions:  sail along the coast of Punta Cana with this super impressive pirate ship Rating (as of December 2023 ):  4.50/5.00 Tour dates and prices:   check prices and availability here *

The huge and impressive pirate ship in Punta Cana

Another pretty unique activity – not necessarily a typical Punta Cana excursion – is the Punta Cana party bus * . This is particularly suitable if you would like to experience the nightlife in Punta Cana , as you’re going to visit different bars and places while having a blast on the party bus in between. This unique Punta Cana nightlife tour comes with an open bar on the bus, a DJ and host who entertains you throughout the night and a lot of like-minded party people, with whom you can have an unforgettable night in Punta Cana.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions:  enjoy an unforgettable night in Punta Canas’ bars and the unique party bus. The best private tours in Punta Cana (for groups or individuals)

Most of the best Punta Cana excursions presented above are shared tours in a group. Sometimes you might be with a particular small group, especially when booking the hiking activity, the mountain bike excursion or the helicopter tours in Punta Cana , but sometimes the tour groups are pretty huge. Therefore, especially when traveling with friends or a big family, a private tour might be much more suitable – especially as private excursions in Punta Cana are sometimes cheaper than you might think. In this case, the following overview with the best private tours in Punta Cana can help.

41) Deep Sea Fishing in Punta Cana

Deep-Sea Fishing is one of the activities a lot of people want to try in their life. While there are shared group excursions available for deep sea fishing in Punta Cana, a lot of them receive bad reviews, usually because the group has different interests on this trip and it is hard for the crew to please everyone.

Therefore, a private Punta Cana tour for deep sea fishing * is the best solution. The crew can take care of your preferences and adjust the trip according to your fishing experience or seasickness vulnerability. Therefore they are better able to create a pleasant experience for you.

Deep-Sea Fishing is a cool and unique experience. Just be prepared for some big waves and a choppy ocean, as these tours are going out deep into the sea. The ocean a few nautical miles away from the coast is not comparable with the shallow water at your typical Punta Cana Beach . 😉

Pro tip: take a seasickness pill before the tour, you won’t regret it.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: catching your own fish and exploring the ocean far away from the coastline is a unique experience Rating (as of December 2023 ): 4.82/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here *

42) Private catamaran charter in Punta Cana

If you like the idea of being on a private boat charter but don’t want to fish nor would like to get shaken around by a choppy ocean, you can also charter a private catamaran and cruise along the coastline and the beaches of Punta Cana – a very exclusive excursion exploring the shores of the east coast in the Dominican Republic.

Most catamaran charters in Punta Cana are similar to the Party Boat Tours described above. You’ll visit a snorkeling spot , cruise over the Caribbean Sea and can enjoy the natural swimming pool, together with a private boat, an exclusive crew just for you and an open bar.

There are tons of options for private excursions in Punta Cana with a catamaran , so you can check out one of the following to see if it fits your need and your group size.

The beach of El Cortecito in Bavaro, Punta Cana

43) Isla Saona by private yacht

Another option for a private boat rental in Punta Cana is to charter a private yacht * to go to Isla Saona . This is a particularly great option if you prefer to go to a specific destination with your private yacht instead of just cruising around with your private catamaran along the shores of Punta Cana. With this option, you basically can combine one of the best excursions in Punta Cana with an exclusive and private experience.

Most details about renting a private yacht to go to Isla Saona are explained in my separate article on how to find the best private tours to Isla Saona . Your charter starts in Bayahibe (which is just an hour away from Punta Cana) and brings you on your private boat to and from Isla Saona, including a stop at the natural swimming pool, snorkeling equipment and sufficient beach time to enjoy fantastic Saona Island.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana excursions: Isla Saona is one of the top attractions in the Dominican Republic and a private yacht is the most exclusive way of exploring the ocean – why not combine both! Rating (as of December 2023 ): 5.00/5.00 Tour dates and prices: check prices and availability here * Further information: – Excursion to Isla Saona – everything you need to know for your hassle-free Saona Island Tour 2021 – How to find the best Private Tours to Isla Saona and Isla Catalina?

44) Private culture and countryside trip

If you are more into land-based activities when looking for a private tour in Punta Cana, you shall check out this Private Jungle Rally & Culture Trip *. It is a similar excursion compared to the Punta Cana culture and countryside tour presented above, but it is a private trip in an air-conditioned SUV.

With a professional guide, you are going to explore local villages, lush vegetation and the off-the-beaten-track countryside beyond Punta Cana. You are going to visit a local house, learn everything about coffee and chocolate and get to see a local school and/or a local market.

After a stop at a local ranch for more information on the domestic flora and fauna, this Punta Cana excursion ends at Macao Beach , where you can swim or boogie board in the water.

Delicious Dominican Mangos in Baní

45) Private Santo Domingo trip

For individual travelers and groups who would like to visit the historic capital and explore some of the things to do in Santo Domingo , this private tour from Punta Cana * is one of the best options. This Punta Cana excursion, depending on the number of participants, already starts at 500 USD per group, making it an affordable private tour for those looking for a bit more privacy, a more customized itinerary and a more exclusive experience. Considering a regular Punta Cana tour to Santo Domingo is already around 100 USD per person, this group price is an interesting bargain. A further advantage is that you save much time on your way to Santo Domingo, as you don’t visit various all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana to pick up other guests before heading to the capital of the Dominican Republic.

Besides this, you have the chance to discover the cultural heritage of the Dominican Republic at your own pace, accompanied by a guide. As already described above, the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo is simply stunning and beautiful. It is not just a tourist area, it is like an open-air museum populated by Dominicans. Furthermore, you get to see some of the most emblematic colonial sights in the entire Caribbean, so don’t miss this trip if you are interested in culture and looking for a private tour from Punta Cana.

The last thing on this unique hand-selected list of the best excursion in Punta Cana 2023 is not really an excursion, it is rather a special recommendation for a very unique Punta Cana holiday: a road trip from Punta Cana to the interior of the Dominican Republic, where you get to see the various beautiful parts of the country.

A road trip in the Dominican Republic might sound adventurous at the first glance, but a closer look reveals the potential for an exceptional holiday. While Punta Cana is mostly famous for its all-inclusive resorts, the Dominican Republic is a massive outdoor adventure playground, hence every road trip will be a true joy. Excursions in Punta Cana you better skip

Dolphin discovery punta cana (swim with the dolphins).

One Punta Cana excursion to avoid is the dolphin swim in Punta Cana. While the kids will love it, you should know that the dolphins are living in captivity and are forced to interact with the humans. They are not even living in the ocean – they live in small pools not made for the natural behaviors of dolphins. Furthermore, the dolphins are mostly imported from other countries. All reasons you should avoid the swim with the dolphins encounter excursion in Punta Cana.

Just in case you’re wondering, swim with the dolphins in the Dominican Republic, Dolphin Island Punta Cana or dolphin park are all the same tour and place – just skip it and choose one of the real natural wonders in the Dominican Republic. If you want to see large mammals, better opt for the whale-watching excursions from Punta Cana .

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: the dolphins are living in captivity and shouldn’t be forced to interact with humans. Better alternative: whale-watching in the Dominican Republic

Dolphin Discovery Entrance

Sharks & Stingray Encounter in Punta Cana / Marinarium

Pretty much the same as for the swim with the dolphins in Punta Cana applies to the sharks and stingray encounter in Punta Cana. People often think they can interact with happy fish in the open ocean, but the opposite is the case in this area called Marinarium: the stingrays and sharks are cooped into a super small area, bordered by fences so they can’t escape – a pretty poor scenery, which is also confirmed by many other travelers passing here or participating. Contrary to the dolphins, the stingrays and sharks in Punta Cana at least are living in the ocean, but the conditions are not even mediocre – they’re very poor.

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: even though the stingrays and sharks live in the open ocean, they’re held in captivity and experience very poor living conditions. Better alternative: whale-watching in the Dominican Republic

Maninarium bridge

Los Ojos Indígenas Punta Cana / Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve

Contrary to the two excursions you should avoid in Punta Cana, the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve is an incredibly beautiful space and you most likely will have a great time here. It is an area comprised of around a dozen crystal-clear lagoons, connected with shaded hiking trails, surrounded by a super peaceful environment. You can swim in some of the cenotes and explore them by swimming or snorkeling.

You might ask now why this is a thing not to do in Punta Cana if it’s that beautiful. I tell you why: because of the price. Los Ojos Indigenas Punta Cana is part of one of Punta Canas’ most important (luxury) tourism companies (called Puntacana Resort) and to avoid too many people, they have raised the prices to a level making it unattractive to visit (except for their guests at Westin Punta Cana Resort, Four Points by Sheraton and Tortuga Bay Resort). The entrance fee is 80 USD per person and doesn’t include any transfers, drinks, entertainment or food – it is just the entrance fee and a guided walk for around 2 hours. Considering that a ticket for most cenotes in Mexico (and also the few cenotes in the Dominican Republic) is usually between 2 and 10 USD and that the similar Hoyo Claro in Punta Cana costs 5 USD entrance, this is simply too expensive and only worth the money if you either really want to explore every cenote in Punta Cana or don’t care that much about your money spent on vacation.

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: even though it is beautiful, the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve is simply too expensive. Better alternative: Hoyo Claro in Punta Cana

Los Ojos Indigenas, a collection of cenotes in Punta Cana

Salto El Limón Full-Day Excursion via bus and boat

This one is short as it is already explained further above here in our extensive Punta Cana Excursion Guide for 2024. The Samaná Excursion by bus and boat is not a bad one, but it is – as mentioned above – a long one. If you don’t mind spending the entire day from 7 am to 7 pm outside of your resort you will have a great time, but usually, there are better options closer to Punta Cana with less time on the road. Alternatively, if you want to go to Samaná, you can either go on a multi-day road trip or book the Samaná excursion by plane * which cuts the transportation time considerably.

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: the Samaná tour from Punta Cana offers many beautiful experiences, but it is simply a very long one. Better alternative : Samaná Excursion from Punta Cana by plane *

The waterfall of Salto El Limon, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo Sightseeing Excursion

The same what is said for the Samaná Excursion from Punta Cana also applies to the Santo Domingo tour from Punta Cana. It is a long journey, which is only worth it if you’re a history buff or love to stroll through old colonial towns and cities. In this case, Santo Domingo is worth a trip, but otherwise, you might want to avoid this Punta Cana tour as you might get bored on the bus. It is a 2.5-hour drive which often can be 3.5 hours factoring in picking up other passengers, a bathroom and snack break in the middle of the journey and the often gridlocked traffic in Santo Domingo. To avoid this, you can either book a private excursion to Santo Domingo * (you can’t change the traffic, but there won’t be any pick-ups from other hotels or unwanted stops on the way) or have a look at the plane excursion to Santo Domingo from Punta Cana *.

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: Santo Domingo is more than 100 miles away and a long trip. It is culturally super interesting but you should only go if you are ok with being away from Punta Cana for at least 12 hours. Better alternative: Santo Domingo Excursion from Punta Cana by plane *

Museo de las Casas Reales, one of the most beautiful buildings in the Zona Colonial

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The best Punta Cana tours depend on your preferences. There is a high diversity of excursions such as ziplining, catamaran tours, countryside tours, trips to national parks or nightlife tours.

Most tours in Punta Cana are also suitable for Cap Cana excursions. Just make sure that they pick you up from your resort in Cap Cana.

Do you have any recommendations for horseback riding in the Punta Cana area?

dominican tours reviews

Hi Jeremy, I am trying to not promote any activities where a direct interaction with animals is involved as there are so many natural beauties and stunning attractions in the Dominican Republic that it is – in my humble opinion – simply not necessary. However, in case you do wanna pick a horseback riding tour in Punta Cana, please make sure the animals are very well taken care of and that the business is running because of the love for the animals, not because of the money. Cheers from Punta Cana, Chris

Hi Simon, for the helicopter tour to Isla Saona, there is only one provider: https://www.puntacanatravelblog.com/recommendation/isla-saona-by-helicopter/ Even though you can book it through different platforms or agencies, the reservations will all arrive at the same company. If you’re looking for some other helicopter or airplane tours as a special gift during your Punta Cana vacation, you can also check out this article here: https://www.puntacanatravelblog.com/excursions-tours/punta-cana-helicopter-airplane-tours/ Best regards Chris

Punta Cana Excursion FAQs

Is it safe to do excursions in punta cana.

Absolutely. Punta Cana is one of the safest towns in the Dominican Republic. There are many things to do in punta cana and excursions are a big part of that. The only thing you need to be careful about is being aware of your surroundings and keeping track of your belongings while you’re out exploring. We invite you to read our article on how safe is Punta Cana.

How much are excursions in Punta Cana?

The excursions in punta cana are fairly affordable, so you don’t have to worry about blowing your budget. Most excursions are roughly $50-75 USD per person, with two excursions usually costing around $100-150. Excursions will take you to many of Punta cana’s most scenic and breathtaking destinations for a reasonable price, which is especially nice if you’re traveling on a budget.

What excursions to do in Punta Cana?

If you’re in search of things to do in Punta Cana, excursions are sure to be at or near the top of your list. The Dominican Republic is home to some of Central America’s most beautiful beaches and water sports, as well as a number of other fun-filled activities that you can enjoy during your stay. These are some of the must do activities during your stay:

Is it cheaper to buy excursions on line or when you get to punta cana?

The prices are comparable, but you can usually find better deals online. If you can get a discount for booking ahead of time, you should definitely take advantage of it to save money. But, most importantly, focus on saving time. Having everything in place before you arrive is often far more valuable than saving $20, for example. This way, you can ensure that everything goes according to plan.

How do I schedule excursions in Punta Cana?

We’ve compiled a list of all  Punta Cana resorts and hotels  to assist you in determining which activities are available as well as the exact pickup time at that hotel.

To schedule your activity, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to our  Tour Hotel Pickups  page
  • Find your hotel
  • Select your activities
  • Choose the activity date
  • Add the number of participants
  • Find and select your hotel
  • Choose the pickup time
  • Submit your booking

It is as simple as that! We wrote a full article on the topic .

Dominican Republic

Travel Advisory June 6, 2023

Dominican republic - level 2: exercise increased caution.

Reissued with updates to health information.

Exercise increased caution in the Dominican Republic due to crime.

Country Summary:  Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic. The development of a professional tourist police corps, institution of a 911 system in many parts of the country, and a concentration of resources in resort areas means these tend to be better policed than urban areas like Santo Domingo. The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale.

Read the country information page for additional information on travel to the Dominican Republic.

If you decide to travel to the Dominican Republic:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.
  • Follow the advice of resort and tour operators regarding local safety and security concerns.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter .
  • Review the Country Security Report for the Dominican Republic.
  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations.  Review the Traveler’s Checklist .
  • Visit the CDC page for the latest Travel Health Information related to your travel.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visas are not required for visits shorter than 30 days. Visit the  Embassy of the Dominican Republic  website for current visa information.

All visitors to the Dominican Republic are charged a $10 tourist card fee that is incorporated into airline charges. Cruise passengers must obtain a tourist card if they are disembarking for longer than 24 hours. Once used, the card allows for stays up to 30 days but can be extended at the General Directorate of Migration in Santo Domingo.

Contact the  Migration Department  in Santo Domingo for visa extension requests. Failure to request an extension will result in a fine at the airport upon departure. The fines range from approximately $55 USD for one month to as high as $1,555 USD for overstays of 10 years or more.

All passengers are required to fill out an  E-Ticket  or paper form when entering or exiting the Dominican Republic. If using E-Ticket, a new form is required for each entry and exit and the code generated upon form completion can be presented at the airport on a digital device.

Visitors must have a ticket entering and leaving the country, the financial means to pay for their stay, and an address in the Dominican Republic where they will be staying.

Exit Requirements for Children:  Minors (children under 18) who are citizens (including dual citizens) or legal residents of the Dominican Republic, if not accompanied by both parents or legal guardian(s), are required to present official proof of parental consent to travel. Please see the Dominican  Migration Department's  website for detailed instructions on the required documents.

HIV/AIDS Restrictions:  Some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions exist for visitors to and foreign residents of the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has restrictions on granting residency to people with HIV/AIDS. Please verify information with the Dominican Republic’s  Migration Department  before you travel.

Yellow Fever Vaccine:  Proof of vaccination against yellow fever is required for travelers entering the Dominican Republic from Brazil. Similar requirements may apply to those traveling from other  countries with yellow fever risk .

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction ,  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Crime:  Crime is a threat throughout the Dominican Republic. Tourist destinations are generally more policed than metropolitan areas.

  • If robbed, hand over your personal belongings without resisting.
  • Do not carry or wear valuable items that will attract attention.
  • Be wary of strangers.
  • Travel with a partner or group if possible.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI   pages for information.

Dating App Robberies:  Several U.S. citizen travelers in the Dominican Republic have reported that they were robbed by people they met through popular online dating applications. If meeting with strangers, you should strongly consider meeting only in public places and avoiding isolated locations where crimes are most likely to occur.

Demonstrations:  Avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if you are in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

Victims of Crime:  Report crimes to the local tourist police (POLITUR) at 809-222-2026 or  911  and contact the U.S. Embassy at 809-567-7775. 911 is operational throughout the country apart from some areas located near the Haitian border. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care.
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion.
  • Provide a list of local attorneys.
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution.
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact POLITUR (809-222-2026), the  National Police ( 809-682-2151), and the U.S. Embassy for assistance.

Sexual Assault:  Rape and sexual assault has been reported throughout the Dominican Republic, including at major resorts and hotels.

Notes for your safety:

  • U.S. citizens have been targeted with date rape drugs.
  • Sexual assault victims in the Dominican Republic should not expect the totality of assistance offered in the United States. Rape kits are often not available until the following morning and must be administered by Dominican authorities.
  • Victims often have to request medication to avoid transmission of STDs and reduce the chances of pregnancy.
  • Prosecution of a rape case moves forward very slowly. Dominican law may require the victim to return to the Dominican Republic at some stages of the judicial process.
  • Security outside of the resort area, including beach areas, is unpredictable, especially at night.

Best Practices:

  • Contact the police/hotel management if resort staff demonstrate unwanted attention.
  • Victims of sexual/other assault should contact the police and the Embassy. Insist that hotel management take immediate action by contacting the police.
  • In a resort, avoid secluded places. Always be accompanied by someone you know, even going to the restroom.
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages alone or with new acquaintances. Do not leave drinks unattended.  Know your limits and help your friends/travelling companions to remain safe.
  • Shout for help immediately if threatened or made uncomfortable.
  • Report suspicious activity, including excessive friendliness by hotel employees, to hotel management, the U.S. Embassy, and local police.
  • Do not swim alone due to life-threatening undertows.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities may not commonly occur in all parts of the country. Hazardous areas and activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in or near major cities or major tourist zones. First responders may be unable to access areas outside of major cities or major tourist zones. The ability to provide urgent medical treatment may be limited. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking illegal drugs in the Dominican Republic are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines. Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage and  general information on legal assistance  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, their possession they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in the Dominican Republic.

See our LGBTI Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in the Dominican Republic prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual or mental disabilities, but the law is not enforced consistently. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. Accessible facilities, information, communication/access to services and ease of movement is limited in most parts of the country. Large resorts and Santo Domingo may have some generally accessible infrastructure, but travelers should not expect the level available in the United States.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Disaster Preparedness:  Register with the Embassy on or before your arrival through our  travel registration website . In the event of a natural disaster or emergency, this will keep you informed. Additional information on  natural disasters and disaster preparedness  can be found on our website. Real Estate:  Property rights are irregularly enforced, and investors often encounter problems in receiving clear title to land. Consult a reputable attorney before signing documents or closing on any real estate transactions. Real estate investments by U.S. citizens have been subject to legal and physical takeover attempts. Absentee landlords and absentee owners of undeveloped land are particularly vulnerable. Consider purchasing title insurance. Scams:  Scammers often target elderly people by pretending to be a law enforcement official, an attorney, or a U.S. Embassy official, claiming that a loved one has been arrested overseas. The caller instructs the victim to wire money. Scammers sometimes impersonate family members, such as a scared grandchild. Contact the U.S. Embassy before wiring money to the Dominican Republic. When in doubt, try to contact your loved one directly.

For emergency services in the Dominican Republic, dial 911 or 809-202-2026 .

Ambulance services:

  • The training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
  • Ambulances are not present or reliable in most areas of the country. They are more reliable and available in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana, and Puerto Plata.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.  Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the  Ministry for Public Health  to ensure the medication is legal in the Dominican Republic.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality:  Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

  • Public medical clinics lack basic resources and supplies.
  • Hospitals and doctors require payment “up front” prior to service or admission.
  • Private hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Be aware that some hotels, resorts, etc. have exclusive agreements with medical providers, which have costs associated and may limit your choices in seeking emergency medical attention.
  • Medical staff may speak little or no English.
  • Generally, in public hospitals only minimal staff is available overnight in non-emergency wards. Consider hiring a private nurse or having family spend the night with the patient, especially a minor child.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

U.S. citizens have suffered serious complications or died during or after having cosmetic or other elective surgery.

If you are considering travel to the Dominican Republic for cosmetic surgery, be mindful of the following:

  • Have a medical evaluation from a U.S. doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery.
  • Before travel, carefully research the doctor (e.g. qualifications, experience performing the surgery, complication rate) and credentials of the recovery facility you plan to use.
  • Share all health information (e.g. medical conditions, medications, allergies) with your doctor before your surgery.
  • Obtain international travel insurance that covers medical evacuation back to the United States and repatriation of remains. For more information, see:  https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/insurance .
  • See a travel medicine professional in the United States at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to discuss healthy travel and to learn about specific risks related to your surgery and travel. For more information on the risks of medical tourism, see:  https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/medical-tourism .
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in the Dominican Republic.

Tap Water:  Tap water is unsafe to drink. Bottled water and beverages are considered safe. Please note that many restaurants use tap water for ice.

Adventure Travel

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

General Health

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Chikungunya

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Resources for Travelers  regarding specific issues in the  Dominican Republic .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Driving conditions vary across the country. Drive defensively and with extreme caution.

Consider hiring a professional driver instead of driving yourself. You can hire licensed drivers who are familiar with local roads through local car rental agencies. In case of accidents, normally only the driver will be taken into custody. In 2019 six people died per day due to traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic.

Frequent hazards include:

  • other drivers not using headlights and/or taillights after dark
  • animals in the road
  • missing manhole covers and large potholes
  • uneven road surfaces
  • scooters and motorcycles driving erratically and splitting lanes
  • driving on sidewalks or against traffic
  • intersections without stop signs
  • unregulated and congested traffic patterns
  • speeding or the running of stoplights
  • heavy urban traffic

Traffic Laws:  Traffic laws are not enforced consistently. After an accident causing serious injury or death, authorities will often take the driver into custody, even if the driver is insured and appears to have not been at fault. Detentions frequently last until a judicial decision has been reached or until a waiver has been signed by the injured party.

Seat belts, and helmets for motorcyclists, are required by law. Violators may be fined. There are no child car seat laws. Police stop drivers using cell phones without a hands-free device.

Public Transportation:  Public transportation includes a metro and public bus system as well as shared bus or van taxis known as “guaguas” (converted vans or microbuses, often without doors). Guaguas run regular routes within urban areas and between towns in the countryside. Public buses and guaguas operating in the capital do not meet U.S. safety standards. Avoid unregulated taxis, which also often lack basic safety features. Use a reputable taxi service, either one recommended by your hotel or a well-known, vetted company. Rideshare services such as Uber are available in many parts of the country. Private bus lines travel between large cities and to popular tourist destinations.

See our Road Safety page for more information. Visit the website of the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism and INTRANT (Instituto Nacional de Transito y Transporte Terrestre) the national authority responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of the Dominican Republic’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s website.   FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  The U.S. Coast Guard has concerns about the security practices in the ports of the Dominican Republic. Until those concerns can be addressed, the Coast Guard advises that Mariners and passengers on commercial vessels traveling through the ports of the Dominican Republic should exercise caution.

Mariners planning travel to the Dominican Republic should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  NGA broadcast warnings .
