After a few days, we moved from Bao Bao to a new hotel further north on the west cost of Koh Chang in the little town Kai Bae. Because we could first check in afternoon, we decided to rent a scooter that. In Kai Bae , there are plenty of places to rent a scooter. We found a place just a couple of meter down the road of our new hotel. For one day, the rent was 200TB. Koh Chang is a very hilly road and therefore the streets a quite steep and winding. But already after a short while you get used to it and the street conditions good. On the east side of the island the streets are also flatter and there was almost no traffic.
Than Mayom waterfall
Our first stop was the Than Mayom waterfall on the east coast. It was a beautiful small waterfall with no other tourist around. To get to the waterfall you have to pay an entrance fee of 200 Bat and then take small walk for about 15 – 20 minutes. If you want you can also take a swim in the river but don’t get too close to the waterfall otherwise the guard will stop you. The cold water was a blessing, because it was so warm. It was really hard leaving the waterfall to continue our tour around the island.
Mangrove forest – Ban Salak Kok
We continued along the ring road towards the mangrove forest Ban Salak Kok. On the way, we drove through little charming villages and palm tree forests. The ride was just so calm and peaceful – it was simply amazing. It was the complete opposite compared to the west side of the island. The reason for this are simply the lack of hotels. Hopefully it continues to be this way but every now and then we passed a sigh introducing a new planed hotel.
At some point, we left the main road and turned on a little gravel road. After a while, we parked our scooter and continued by food. The first goal was to find a restaurant, which was not hard at all. On a small peer, we found a little Thai restaurant. To get to the restaurant you have to walk of sometime through the narrow streets of the villages, which allows you to get some insight of the daily lives of the families living here.
After our delicious meal, we decided to head back to our hotel because dark clouds were gathering at the sky. We should not have arrived one minute later at the hotel because just when we arrived it started to rain cats and dogs. When the rain moved on, we went to the beach and tried to photograph lightning.
For dinner, we went into town again and ate whole grilled fish, half a kilo of shrimps and some rice. What a dream! Why can’t every day end like this?!
Tips for a scooter tour on Koh Chang
- Check your scooter carefully before you start and show the damages to the rental agency
- Insist on a helmet! We saw some accidents on the way.
- Take the time and drive to the East Cost of Koh Chang – it’s really worth it! The roads are empty and driving is really relaxed.
- If you are unexperienced ride a scooter than it is better to drive during the day because at night the roads are not lighted.
- Remember to bring an international driver’s license, it might be required when renting a scooter.

Car Hire, Island Tours, Motorbike Rental – Koh Chang
Car hire and motorbike rental are a popular way to explore Koh Chang, giving you that extra freedom to do things at your own pace and at a time of your own choosing.
Island tours using private minibuses are another option to get around, great for groups or for families to seek out the less visited east coast.
You can jump straight to the relevant section:-
Island Tours
Dangers of motorbikes on koh chang, bicycle rental, car hire on koh chang.
Saloons (Jazz or Vios), larger family cars (Innova and Fortuner), Isuzu 4 door pick-ups and converted army jeeps are just some of the options offered for car hire on the island.
Rates start at 1,300bt per day for a sedan, 1,500bt for a pick-up and 1,600bt for a SUV style car. There are reductions given for weekly and monthly hires. A limited number of child seats may be available.
For rental with us, you will need to leave your passport for the duration of the hire or a copy of your passport and a 10,000bt ($300, EUR300) cash deposit. Insurance is at 15,000bt excess .
The army jeeps are between 1,800bt and 2,200bt.
If available, we can help you organise your car hire on Koh Chang. Contact us with your requirements and dates and we can come back to you with a price and availability. We do not organise the jeep hire as they do not come with any insurance.
We can set you up with a day tour around the island either solely on the east coast or the west coast or a combination of both.
With the east coast tour, you stop at the Chinese Temple in Klong Son at the start of the trip and then head down to the mangrove walkway ( Red Bridge ) in Salak Phet. You can also visit the charming local temple and its little museum. For lunch, we take you to Salak Phet Seafood , one of the best restaurants on the island and then afterwards visit the viewpoint for coffee and drinks at Altitude 79 .
If there is time, you may also be able to pop in the waterfall at Than Mayom (entrance fee 200bt, 100bt per child). We can of course vary this itinerary, even taking in the main waterfall at Klong Plu on the west coast at the start or end of the day.
All tours use a private minibus, with prices starting from 3,200bt. The driver has limited English but please note he is not a guide. A specially chartered songthaew taxi is a similar price. Food, drink and entrance fees to waterfalls are not included. Hours are usually with a 09.00 collection from your hotel, back at between 15.00 to 16.00.
Just email us on [email protected] with your requirements and dates and we will get back to you with details and prices.
Motorbike or Scooter Hire on Koh Chang
Daily rental (24 hours) is from 200bt to 450bt depending on the model and beach, with discounts given for weekly and monthly deals. Always check the bike thoroughly for existing damage before you drive away. You sign a contract on rental and leave some form of ID, be it passport, driver’s licence or their copies.
The bikes come with helmets, wearable by law, though a law normally flouted. There are now frequent police checks, with the fine at 500bt for both driver and passenger for non-compliance. Keep the receipt in case you are stopped again on the same day. You should also have a licence to drive a motorbike, with our understanding being an International one will suffice. If you cannot produce a licence, you will be fined – 500bt and upwards.
The motorbikes use gasohol at around 50bt a litre, which is sold in recycled bottles outside every other shop. You will also find two PTT gas stations in Klong Prao Beach and Klong Son, where the price is cheaper.
We do not organise motorbike rental.
Riding a motorbike anywhere in the world is dangerous, with Koh Chang no exception. Inexperienced drivers find themselves on a very steep learning curve so accidents are very frequent. Unfortunately, deaths on the roads are far too common.
The two mountains between Klong Son and White Sand Beach and Kai Bae Beach and Lonely Beach have some very difficult ascents, descents, curves and hairpins. The rainy season or brief showers in the dry season can make these hills unbelievably slippery in a blink of an eye.
Much of the driving on the island is very poor with little adherence to generally accepted traffic laws. In many places, lighting at night is poor. Drink driving is commonplace. Our advice is stick to the laws you know to be right , keep your speed down and be very aware and cautious of other road users at all times . That way, you are minimising the risks.
Standard bicycles can be rented in all the major areas at 100bt to 150bt per day. The models used are mostly for local pottering but you will some decent ones for hite too – try Koh Chang Cycling in Coconut Plaza , Chai Chet .
Once you get over that White Sand Beach mountain (and only the proper dedicated cyclists will manage it), the east and south east coast is great to explore. Here’s a little tour idea for you – Chek Bae – A Cycle Tour .

1 Day Motorbike Trip on Koh Chang
There are places in Thailand that are best explored with your own vehicle.
Koh Chang, Thailand’s third largest island, is such a place. Even though there are frequent songthaew (pick-up taxi) services along the popular west coast, it’s not just a lot more fun but also easier to discover the most beautiful beaches , viewpoints and villages on your own motorbike. You can stop wherever you want, take your time and even discover the quiet, non-touristic places.
Especially the quiet east coast is worth a trip, there are less than 20% of vehicles on the roads than there are on the popular west coast and it’s really crusin’ rather than beach hoppin’. It is possible to drive from any place on the west coast to the southeastern tip of Koh Chang and return within one day – and lots of stops included.
Be careful when riding the motorcycle on Koh Chang. There are some extremely steep and long hills, especially on the west coast. Really, the roads are more challenging than the ones on Phuket, Phangan and Samui. There are also a lot of young foreign backpackers that overestimate themselves and drive fast to impress the girls. If you do decide to ride all the way to the Koh Chang Memorial on the southeastern tip of the island, be warned: The last 5 km is off-road and you need to be an experienced driver to cope with the rocky and hilly unpaved road.
Below are some of my nicest pictures of my trip along the quiet east coast of Koh Chang.
How To Rent a Motorbike on Koh Chang
There are countless of motorbike rental shops as well as travel agents all around the west coast. Most hotels and guesthouses also offer motorbike rental service. The going rate is between 250 and 350 Baht per day , depending on the size of the bike.
You are generally required to provide a valid drivers license (and better carry it in case of emergency) and if you pass a police checkpoint, you are expected to wear a helmet (fine for not wearing one: 200 Baht). Make sure your rental shop provides a helmet, it should be included in the bike rental price.

East Coast Tour : See the Real Koh Chang
A Day Trip to the Quiet Side of the Island
I always advise our guests to visit the east and south-east of Koh Chang in order to see some ‘normal life’ – rather than just spending their time on the island looking around the more touristy west coast.
The challenge is knowing where to go and what to see whilst on the east coast. You can look on Googlemaps or pick up a free printed map of the island. But unless you specifically know what to look for or where to stop, it’s hard to get the most our of your day. And there will be a lot of aimless wandering around before you discover, or miss, the best sights.
So if you want to explore the other side of the island and aren’t sure where to go, this mini-guide should help make the most of your time. You’ll need a full day and probably won’t be able to see and do everything listed here. So pick and choose what you are interested in and have a great day out.
But you’ll need your own transport. Scooter rental is from around 250 – 300 Baht / day for a 125 or 150cc automatic bike. Be sure to check the brakes and tires are in good condition. Alternatively, you can rent a car or pick up truck for 1,200 – 1,400 Baht / day, depending on model.
Check the East Coast , Salakphet and Salakkok pages in the Island Guide for photos and more specific information.

My recommendations for what to see & do and where to stop for lunch and a cooling drink.
Organised Day Trips
Koh chang island tour.
See Koh Chang in a rather full day with this tour you can book at any tour agent when you are on the island. It’s a value for money way to see most of the main sights of the island. Some agencies may offer this by minibus but usually the vehicle is an open sided songtaew (pick up truck taxi).
Note that the driver isn’t a tour guide. Just someone who will ferry you between the sights and wait while you take some photos.
The itinerary will include both the west and east coasts and usually comprise: .
– White Sand Beach view point – Chinese Temple in Klong Son – Than Mayom Waterfall – Salakkok bay – Salakphet bay – Klong Plu waterfall – Elephant Camp – Kai Bae view point – Bang Bao fishing village
Time: Pick up around 08:00 – 08:30 from your hotel and return back around 15:30 – 16:00
Price: 900 – 1,000 baht/person. Young children half price. ( Plus National Park entry fee 200 Baht/Adult , 100 Baht/Child )
Private Tour with a Guide
In the form of a private tour from an experienced Thai tour guide, Teerasak – or Thomas to use his English nickname – who runs the ‘Thomas Koch Travel and Adventure’ tour. He has been working on Koh Chang for over 18 years for tour agencies. Handling inbound clients from Europe and elsewhere.
However, he now works for himself and is offering a couple of different day trips to couples, families and small groups. These are all private and so are tailored to the group and what people want to see and do. They don’t stick to a fixed schedule.
He offers a couple of easy treks which are aimed at families, and can also take you to the top of Khao Laem near Salakphet. Which has awesome views. . But the tour that might be of more interest to most people is his trip to the north, east and south east of the island which will give you an insight into the lives of people on Koh Chang who aren’t involved in the tourism business.
This isn’t just a trip with a driver who will drop you off at various locations without any explanation as to what they are, why they are important etc. Thomas speaks excellent English and through his local knowledge and connections he’s able to give you an insight into life beyond the beach that you simply wouldn’t discover on your own.
What will you see?
During the day trip you’ll be able to see the Chinese Shrine; Organic vegetable and fruit farm; a local school; village temple; fishing village – where you can take a gondola ride through the mangroves as well as enjoying a walk through the mangrove forest and various signs and photo opportunities. The trip usually ends with a very late lunch in Klong Son at a small restaurant owned by a local sculptor and artist. During the day you’ll learn a lot about the flora and fauna on Koh Chang as well as being able to interact with some of the local families that live here.
There is an option to visit sites on the west coast e.g. elephant camp, small waterfall, Bangbao village etc for a small extra payment. But i’d stick to spending the day exploring the quieter spots in Salakkok and Salakphet that most visitors to the island don’t see.
Contact Details & Booking :
This trip can’t be booked in any tour agents. Only direct with Thomas. Please contact him through the Thomas Koch Travel and Adventure Facebook page or by phone

Koh Chang Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know About This Thai Island
Welcome to my comprehensive Koh Chang Travel Guide, where I unveil the secrets of this enchanting Thai island, nestled in the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand.
As the second-largest island in Thailand, Koh Chang has long captivated travellers with its breathtaking landscapes, from lush jungles and cascading waterfalls to serene beaches and vibrant coral reefs.
Whether you're an adventurer eager to explore the untamed beauty of Koh Chang's national parks, a beach lover seeking tranquillity, or a culture enthusiast curious about the local way of life, this guide promises to be your essential companion.
How to get to Koh Chang
Getting to Koh Chang is an adventure that sets the tone for the tranquil and natural beauty that awaits you on the island itself.
Despite its somewhat remote location, Koh Chang is relatively easy to reach from various parts of Thailand. Here's your guide on how to navigate your way to this tropical paradise:
How to get to Koh Chang from Bangkok
Bangkok to Koh Chang by Air: The quickest way to get from Bangkok to Koh Chang is by flying to Trat Airport from Suvarnabhumi Airport . Bangkok Airways operates daily flights to Trat, and the flight takes approximately 1 hour. Once you arrive at Trat Airport, you can catch a taxi or a minibus to the ferry piers at Laem Ngop (Ao Thammachat and Trat Ferry pier).
Bangkok to Koh Chang by road: Take a bus from Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) or the Northern Bus Terminal (Morchit) to Trat. The journey takes about 5-6 hours. There are also direct bus services that will take you all the way to the ferry terminals for Koh Chang.
If you prefer to drive from Bangkok to Koh Chang, it will take about 4-5 hours. The route is well-signposted, and you can park your car at the pier or take it across to the island on the ferry, depending on your preference.
Ferry to Koh Chang
Once you arrive at Laem Ngop, there are two piers from where you can catch a ferry to Koh Chang.
Cenferry at Centrepoint Pier (Tha Centre Point), which is 3km along the coast from Laem Ngob, and Ao Thammachat, which is roughly 9km from Laem Ngob.
If you wish to take a car or minibus/hotel transfer over to Koh Chang you will use the Ao Thammachat car ferry.
You can book your ferry here , I recommend booking atleast a week in advance.
On arrival at Koh Chang
Once you arrive on the island, you can get around in a shared taxi (songthaew) to take you to your hotel or resort. These taxis are readily available at the pier and offer a convenient way to get around the island. Be sure to agree on the fare before setting off.
Alternatively, many hotels will offer a pick up service, some will pick you up at Trat Airport.
You can book the full journey here.
How to get to Koh Chang from Koh Kood
Many travellers head to the island of Koh Kood before exploring Koh Chang. During high season, there are plenty of transport options between the two islands, if you are travelling in low season it can be a little more tricky.
Direct Boat Services (Seasonal)
During the high tourist season (October-May), operators offer direct boat services from Koh Kood to Koh Chang. These are not always regular and depend heavily on demand and weather conditions.
As of 2024, there are three companies operating ferries between Koh Kood and Koh Chang, these are Boonsiri Ferry, Koh Chang Bangbao Boat, and Koh Chang Nor Nu Speed Boat.
Boats take around 2 hours to travel between the islands, if you choose a wooden boat to Koh Chang, the journey will typically take 3-4 hours.
The easiest way to book a boat from Koh Kood to Koh Chang is through your accommodation or you can book well in advance with 12go here .
About Koh Chang
Koh Chang is part of the Mu Ko Chang National Park, a protected area encompassing several islands and home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.
The island's interior is dominated by a mountain range covered with thick jungle, offering first-class hiking trails that lead to waterfalls such as Klong Plu.
Beaches fringe Koh Chang's coastline, particularly popular ones include White Sand Beach, Lonely Beach, and Kai Bae Beach. The beaches are known for their relaxing atmosphere and beautiful sunsets.
Offshore, the coral reefs are teeming with marine life, making snorkelling and diving popular activities.
There is also much to do outside Koh Chang itself. The surrounding islands of Koh Wai, Koh Mak, and Koh Kood are accessible from Koh Chang's coast, each having their own unique charm and beauty.
What is the weather in Koh Chang?
Due to its location in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Chang experiences a tropical monsoon climate, characterised by three main seasons: the hot season, the rainy (monsoon) season, and the cool season.
Hot Season (March to May)
- Temperature: Temperatures can climb to around 30°C to 35°C (86°F to 95°F) during the day, often with high humidity.
- Weather Conditions: The hot season sees long, sunny days with clear skies, though occasional short and heavy showers can occur as the season progresses.
Rainy Season (June to October)
- Temperature: Temperatures slightly drop during this season but remain warm, ranging from 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F).
- Weather Conditions: This is the monsoon period, with September and October usually the wettest months.
Impact of the rainy season in Koh Chang: The rain can affect outdoor activities and travel plans, but the island is less crowded, and accommodation prices are lower.
Cool Season (November to February)
- Temperature: Temperatures are more comfortable, ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). This is considered the best time to visit Koh Chang.
- Weather Conditions: This period has the least rainfall and the most days of clear, sunny skies, making it ideal for exploring the island, snorkelling, and diving. It's also the peak tourist season, so expect more visitors and higher prices.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO KO KUT (KOH KOOD) – THAILANDS BEST KEPT SECRET
by Hungry Backpack Feb 6, 2019 0 comments
Overview On Where To Stay, Where To Eat And The Best Things To Do On Ko Kut
In this post we’ll be sharing everything there is to know about visiting Ko Kut (also known as Koh Kood) island – one of Thailand’s most secluded tropical islands and probably the most beautiful Thai island we’ve ever visited.
If you’re looking for something specific about Ko Kut, here is a quick guideline of what this post will cover:
Getting to Ko Kut from Bangkok
- Things to note about Ko Kut (Transport, Money, Prices, Shopping, Scooter Rental)
- Best things to see and do on Ko Kut
Where to eat on Ko Kut
- Where to stay on Ko Kut
If you rather want to see some motion pictures to get inspired about what to do on Koh Kood than have a look at our short and sweet 4 minute video showing you some of our favourite highlights of the island
Ko Kut – Love at first sight
Although we’ve travelled all over Thailand – including the West of Thailand with a trip to Koh Chang last year, we’ve never even heard about the island of Ko Kut (also known as Koh Kood) – the easternmost island before Cambodia! That was until we saw a story on Instagram recently about Ko Kut posted by another travel couple sharing pictures and videos of those crystal clear waters, those endless (and empty) white sandy beaches and the many, many unused beach swing (this girl here needs her beach swings! 😉 ) We knew right there and then that we gotta check it out and boy, Ko Kut did not disappoint.
As soon as we got a glimpse from the ferry of Ko Kuts coastline and it’s lush, green hills we were in love. You hardly see any hotels or other signs of tourists here – just endless jungle almost making you believe you’re the first visitor to ever step foot on this little tropical paradise.
Once you approach the Pier in Ao Salad you’ll be greeted by this gleaming, golden Buddha statue watching over the small and peaceful fishing village below and all the incoming boats.
Such a difference from most of the other popular Thai islands and beach provinces in the South where instead of a peaceful golden Buddha statue and just a few wooden houses on stilts loud screaming taxi drivers await you eagerly and a coastline packed with hotels, bars and souvenir shops.
You see, we’ve fallen for this little tropical island right the moment we caught the first glimpse of it and in the coming few days we spend on Koh Kood this feeling only got stronger.
In this post we’ll be sharing with you everything there is to know about visiting Ko Kut / Koh Kood – from how to get there, where to stay, how to spend your time here and of course – where to eat! 😊 So let’s get going, shall we??
This post contains affiliate links marked with an *, which means that if you purchase a product through these links, we’ll get a small commission which helps us to keep on going. Don’t worry–the price will still be the same for you.
There are several options of how you can get to Ko Kut from Bangkok. If you’re not on a tight budget the quickest and probably most comfortable way is to book a flight from Bangkok to Trat and then simply hop on a speedboat that takes you to Ko Kut.
However, if you ARE on a budget like us it’s best to use ground transportation. We found the easiest and best value for money being the Boonsiri Bus and Highspeed Ferry Combo Package . Pick up point in Bangkok is Khao San Road and the whole trip takes around 9 hours from Bangkok to Koh Kut (with sailing time on the Boonsiri Highspeed Ferry being between 70-90 Minutes)
You can buy the Boonsiri Bus + Highspeed Ferry package at a local travel agency or simply through an online agent such as 12GoAsia* if you prefer making all your travel arrangements in advance.
If you aren’t too flexible with your Thailand itinerary, we highly recommend sorting out your accommodation on Ko Kut and booking your tickets to Ko Kut at least a week in advance – especially if you’re traveling in high season as both – accommodation on Ko Kut and seats on the bus are limited. As booking our Ko Kut tickets online through 12GoAsia was pretty much the same price as booking it with a travel agent in Bangkok (around 900 THB per Person ) we definitely preferred this option as we could simply do it from our laptops while still being in Los Angeles, pay easily with our credit card online and knowing our seats on that specific date we wanted to travel to Ko Kut were reserved for us.
We have also written a detailed blog post about How to get from Bangkok to Ko Kut on a budget where can you find more information and pictures about our trip to the island.
Things to note about Ko Kut before you go
Prices for accommodation.
As the demand for (budget) accommodation has increased on Ko Kut in the past years you’ll find that you have to pay generally a bit more for your bed than on other Thai islands which are more developed and therefore offer more (budget) accommodation.
It’s hard to find a bungalow with A/C for less than 40 USD/night however it’s easy to find a luxury beach front resort if money is no issue as this island is very popular among honeymooners due to it’s tranquillity and absolutely gorgeous beaches.
So make sure to check well in advance – e.g. on booking.com – for good accommodation deals. Generally the later you book, the higher the prices.
We got lucky and snatched up the last room at the Suan Maprao Resort* . Although we had to pay around 45 USD/night for our little jungle bungalow – which was well above our normal daily budget in Thailand – it was still good value for money as the huts came equipped with super comfy beds, en suite bathrooms with warm water, strong Wi-Fi connection and included a delicious breakfast every morning. No wonder this place was always booked out!
When it comes to shopping it’s a similar story.
Shopping on Ko Kut Island
There simply aren’t any supermarket chains like 7Eleven, Spar or FamilyMart on the island so make sure to stock up on snacks in advance.
However, you’ll find numerous local shops where you can get pretty much all your daily necessities should you have forgotten your toothpaste, shampoo or sunscreen as well as various snacks and drinks – maybe not exactly the cookie brand you were looking for but they do have some sort of cookies for sure. Prices tend to be a little bit higher but still reasonable, considering they have to get it all from the mainland.
If you want to buy fruits and vegetables there are plenty of little fruit stalls , usually right next to the main roads offering fresh fruit and veggies at really good prices. Sometimes they can also prepare you smoothies and shakes (cost around 50-60 THB) if that’s what you are looking for.
Getting around on Ko Kut – Renting a scooter
Except for the free shuttle taxis that take you from the ferry pier to your accommodation there aren’t many local taxis driving around on Ko Kut (although we expect this to change soon) so it’s best (and also way more fun) to rent a motorbike if you want to explore the island a bit. Prices are around 250 – 350 THB per day and you’ll mostly get a 125cc Honda or one of those Yamaha automatics . Most hotels, resorts and guesthouses will happily organize a scooter for you.
The majority of the roads on Ko Kut are fine meaning they are paved and in relatively good condition . There is a concrete road covering the whole western coastline form North to South. However, be aware that some beaches, resorts and tourist attractions such as the Huang Nam Keaw Waterfall can only be accessed via small dirt roads and should be avoided if you’re not an experienced driver or the weather conditions aren’t the greatest.
TIP: It’s cheaper to buy fuel from the gas station just north of the hospital or from the gas pumps you’ll find on the side of the road than to buy these gas filled bottles from roadside stalls.
If you however don’t feel comfortable riding your own scooter than you can simply book a tour or get driver for the day who will show you the highlights of the island. Just check with your hotel/guesthouse about the options available.
Money, Money, Money – How to get your hands on some BAHT on Ko Kut
On Ko Kut CASH IS KING! There are no banks and only 2 ATMs on the whole island.
Only higher-end resorts may take credit cards however most guesthouses and smaller hotels as well as most restaurants and shops still only accept cash so make sure to bring enough money to cover for all your costs and if you want to avoid the high ATM fees.
As everywhere in Thailand, the ATMs on Ko Kut charge a 220THB fee on top of whatever your bank charges which you can only avoid by bringing enough cash or at least a few bills of your local currency (USD, EUR) and using the local money exchange. You’ll find several places on Ko Kut where you can exchange your money but don’t expect a great rate. (Better be prepared and exchange on the mainland before travelling to Ko Kut).
If you find yourself running out of money you can check with the bigger resorts, some will give cash advances for non-guests but they will probably charge around 5% commission.
Best things to do on Ko Kut
Although sightseeing is pretty limited on Koh Kood, there is still plenty to do – or NOT to do – as simply “doing nothing” is probably one of the most popular activities on this island! 🙂 And rightfully so!
However, should you get easily tired by just sitting on the beach than we’ll have some other suggestions of how you can spend your time on this island!
Below we’ll list six of our favourite things to do on Ko Kut:
1) Relax and recharge
Let’s start with the “not-doing-anything-part” 🙂 With it’s crystal clear and turquoise waters and an abundance of beach swings, uncrowded tropical beaches and jungle hammocks Ko Kut is the perfect place if you’ve got some serious relaxing to do! 😊
Simply kick-back and relax – you’re on island time!
2) Rent a scooter and explore the island
If you’ve done your fair share of relaxing and day-dreaming your days away there is a whole island to explore!
As we’ve mentioned, there aren’t many taxis or other local transport on Ko Kut so the best way to explore the island is with a little scooter. You can rent one for about 250-350THB per day from your accommodation.
Oh, how we loved our little two wheels adventures on Ko Kut. There aren’t that many ‘tourist attractions’ and ‘sights to see’ so we would simply scooter aimlessly around the island through lush jungle forests and along the stunning coastline and see what we could find.
The roads are in relatively good condition and there isn’t much traffic on the island with cars pretty much non-existent but do watch out for the occasional monkey jumping from the tree or rooster crossing the street.
3) Go beach hopping
Along the West coast you’ll find some absolutely breath-taking beaches, most of which are essentially empty and probably among the most beautiful beaches you’ve ever seen in your life such as Ao Ta Pao Beach, Klong Chao Beach, Klong Hin Beach and Ao Phrao Beach .
In between you’ll always find little bays and stretches of beach that look right out of a postcard, but don’t even have a name! The fewer resorts around, the higher the chances that you’ll have these postcard-perfect beaches all to yourself.
With such world-class beaches and crystal-clear water also come a ton of fun beach activities – okay, maybe not a ton – there aren’t any banana boats zick-zacking around the coastlines nor any jet-skis crusin’ around (LUCKILY!!!!).
But, should you ever get bored simply lying in the sand working on your tan, you have the option of renting a Kayak (most resorts by the beach offer them for free to their guests), go snorkeling or on a little diving adventure to spot some of the amazing underwater life in the crystal clear and turquoise waters.
However, what you’ll probably notice (and what we found a bit annoying) is that sometimes it’s really hard to get TO the beach. Although beaches in Thailand cannot be private property, most resorts have blocked the access roads and put up big signs “no trespassing” making it a bit tricky to get TO the non-private beach area.
The most developed beach area is probably the Khlong Chao Beach with a few up-scale resorts right on the beach such as the “High Seasons” or the “Tinkerbell Resort” but also various budget-friendly accommodation, cafes and restaurants nearby.
Therefore we’ll be putting together little overview of the top 5 Beaches on Ko Kut that can easily be accessed from the Khlong Chao area on foot or after a short scooter ride.
4) Explore the jungle and ancient sacred trees
Ko Kut is home to some pretty old trees most of which are well hidden in the thick jungle forest – we’re talking hundreds and hundreds of years and they are GIGANTIC! The most two well-known are the “Big Chai Tree” and the “500 year old Makka Tree” (sometimes also known as just “The Big Trees” or “Sai Yai”).
So with the absence of any other major tourist attractions we decided to visit these two ancient beauties which you can find right in the middle of the island in close proximity to each other . They were also conveniently located for our trip to the Huang Nam Kaew Waterfall .
Big Chai Tree
If you’re heading to the waterfall, the first of the two ancient trees you will pass is the Big Chai Tree . Shortly after you passed a little water reservoir on your left, the road goes up and you’ll see a small dirt road on your left leading into the jungle. This road will lead you to the Big Chai Tree after about 50 meters. You won’t see it straight away as the jungle is doing a great job hiding it 😊.
500 Years old makka tree
To get to the “500 Years old Makka tree” simply follow the road further to the waterfall. Right after when the paved road stops and turns into a dirt road leading downhill you’ll see a wooden sign on your left pointing out the “Huang Nam Kaew Waterfall – 1.5 km”.
This is where you can park your scooter and where a small little path leads into the jungle on your left to the second of the impressive tree duo.
5) Go chasing waterfalls
Dotted around the centre of the island are a handful of waterfalls which are all free to visit and great for a cooling dip.
There are three major waterfalls on Ko Kut: Klong Yai Keaw Waterfall (close to Ao Salad Pier), Huang Nam Kaew Waterfall (close to the Big Chai and 500 year old Makka Tree) and Klong Chao Waterfall (The most well-known and located the very heart of Ko Kut) and all three waterfalls are free to visit.
Depending on the season you are visiting these waterfalls can be fairly impressive. However, even if you’re visiting Ko Kut during dry season as we did (December – March) visiting the waterfalls is still worth a trip! If you’re lucky there is still enough water for a little refreshing swim in the natural pools or at least a quick shower.
Khlong Chao Waterfall
Klong Chao Waterfall is the most well-known the largest of all three waterfalls on Ko Kut and easy accessible with big signs pointing you in the right direction and a well-maintained paved road leading all the way to the parking lot.
You get to the waterfall after a short and easy 10-minute walk from the parking lot through the jungle and there is a huge pool that you can swim in – most likely even in dry season. If you’re lucky you can even enjoy a little free fish-Spa session!
However, note that this waterfall is usually a very popular stop for organized (mainly Russian) tour groups who will come here around noon/ early afternoon so if you want to avoid these come here early in the morning or shortly before sunset.
Klong Yai Ki Waterfall
This waterfall is located in the North-West of Ko Kut on the way to Soneva Kiri . This waterfall is a bit smaller and more quiet but comes also with a pool where you can cool off and perfect if you want to escape the crowds from Klong Chao waterfall.
To get to the waterfall simply follow the signs to Bann Makok . Once you get to the parking area it’s another short walk to the waterfall.
Huang Nam Kaew Waterfall (also formerly known as “Secret Waterfall”)
Getting to Huang Nam Kaew Waterfall is a bit trickier as it’s not as well marked as the Klong Chao Waterfall and the road for the last 1,5 km (after the 500 Year old Makka Tree) is a bit difficult to navigate as it’s just a dirt road leading up and down through the jungle .
Once you get to the parking area with toilet facilities and a little restaurant it’s another steep 100 meter walk down to the river.
Once you made it to the river you gotta get UP again! 🙂 You’ll need to climb over, up and around some huge boulders if you actually want to see the waterfall but it’s well worth it (though swimming here is NOT possible).
6) Watching the sunset
As most of Ko Kuts beaches are facing West it’s the perfect island for all sunset lovers like us. I don’t know what it is but I’ll never get tired of watching sunsets while sitting on the beach (preferably with a colourful and well decorated drink in my hand and Schatzi by my side 😉). I mean, just look at this:
Our top 5 favourite places to go and watch one of Ko Kuts spectacular sunsets are:
1) Khlong Chao Beach (Tinkerbell Beach)
Park your scooter at the Tinkerbell Resort and keep walking past all the fancy resorts until you get to the very end of this little peninsula. Bring a blanket and some snacks/drinks and enjoy the spectacular views.
2) The View Point Café
This super laid-back place is build directly above the water and offers some amazing views – pretty much the same views as on Klong Chao Beach but with the option for having a cold drink and without sitting in the sand getting all…well…sandy 😊
Although the view is slightly obstructed by a few trees the atmosphere and relaxed vibe of this café/bar makes well up for it. They also offer delicious cake and Vietnamese coffee in case you’re not a Chang Person and rather have something sweet with your sunset 😊
3) Nam Leuk Pier & Ao Ta Pao Beach (Paradise Beach)
Probably the most popular beach and pier to watch the sunset.
Most people will head straight out to end of the long pier past the TRAT sign but little word of warning, half of the pier is actually closed due to severe damage (and part of the construction has already collapsed).
We therefore preferred to find a quiet place on the long stretch of beach by the Paradise Beach Resort . There is also a Bar if you fancy a drink as well as a few local vendors who will be parking by the Pier selling snacks and drinks.
Most resorts and even most guesthouses have a restaurant onsite where you can get breakfast / lunch and dinner. Outsiders are always welcome however prices in these places are usually well above what you are used to from other places in Thailand.
A Pad Thai or Egg Fried Rice will cost around 80 THB minimum, Coffee is usually 80THB and up.
In the past years however more and more restaurants and cute local cafés have been popping up – maybe still not a foodies paradise but at least offering you some choice. 🙂
We heard good things about the ‘Chiang Mai Restaurant’ (for Lunch and Dinner) the ‘Viewpoint Café’ (for sunset drinks and dinner) and the ‘Mermaid Fashion & Café’ (for breakfast and lunch snacks)
As we always passed a sign on our way to our accommodation for ‘The Pink Kangaroo Café’ and got curious (after all, it’s a PINK Kangaroo!!) we decided to check it out on afternoon! It’s run by this super friendly couple -Dick & Wan, who previously owned the Viewpoint Café (hence you will note both places have the same menu! Apparently the new owners didn’t know how to change it so they just went with Dicks and Wans meue 😊).
They offer delicious cakes, Vietnamese coffee, cocktails and snacks in their cute little garden. The perfect place if you are touring around the island and need a little break to relax and marvel at their giant pink kangaroo statue.
If you’re looking for a cheap place to eat lunch/ dinner than there are various little roadside restaurants where you can get a good meal for only 50THB. We absolutely loved ‘Waree Restaurant’ where almost every Thai dish was 50THB. They don’t offer many vegetarian options on their menu but you can simply tell them you don’t want any meat and they are happy to prepare almost every dish accordingly. I had the best Sweet & Sour Chicken – without Chicken – at this place 😊.
Another favourite for locals and tourists is ‘Chaiyo Restaurant’ nearby Klong Chao Beach. Super delicious food in a very rustic and local setting however always packed so be patient – it might take a while for your food to come!
If you’re looking for a proper Seafood feast than ‘Noochy Seafood’ is your best bet located in the small fishing village of Bao Ao Yi .
Should you however fancy some Western Food there isn’t much choice except for a nice Italian (run by real Italians) called “Pizza & Pasta“ which is right across from Waree Restaurant as well as a small restaurant simply called “Bistro Koh Kood” which is run by a French expat and therefore offering a rather French and European cuisine where you can have burgers and steaks as well as real French cheese.
As a small reminder the following links are affiliate links as well, which means that if you book a stay through these links, we’ll get a small commission. Don’t worry–the price is still the same for you.
Where to stay on Ko Kut (Koh Kood) island?
Ko Kut originally wasn’t a backpacker’s destination at all with it’s mainly upmarket resorts catering exclusively to package tour visitors. However, with more boat services connection Ko Kut to the mainland and good package deals from Bangkok more budget accommodation has sprung up in recent years attracting nowadays a more mixed crowd of couples, families, backpackers and honeymooners to this gorgeous (but still very quiet and peaceful) island getaway.
Today, you’ll find most of the accommodation spread out along the Western coastline of Ko Kut with the area around Klong Chao Beach having become the “busiest” tourist hub on the island where you’ll find everything from super high-end luxury beachfront resorts selling rooms for several thousand baht per night (e.g. Tinkerbell Resort* , High Season Resort* or Wendy The Pool Resort* ) to a good choice cosy and budget-friendly guesthouses and jungle bungalows (examples Suan Maprao Resort* , Happy Days Guest House* or Suan Nai Bungalow Ko Kut* ) selling rooms for 1500 THB/night and below just a few minutes’ walk from the beach.
It’s definitely our preferred area to stay on Ko Kut with a wold-class beach in walking distance as well as some good restaurants and cafes around.
We didn’t want to spend more than 50USD per night and therefore opted to stay at the lovely Suan Maprao Resort* , located about 15min walk from the beautiful Klong Chao Beach, which had excellent reviews on Booking.com.
This family-run hotel offers cozy jungle bungalows that come equipped with a fridge and A/C (definitely needed!!) as well as really comfy beds. They also offer motorbike rental (at only 250THB/day!) as well as a good selection of Thai food in their on-site restaurant. A delicious daily breakfast was already included in the room rate.

Koh Chang Travel Guide: The Rugged Island in East Thailand
My name is Floris Hermans and welcome to my guide on the best things to do in Koh Chang. This stunning Thai island is located only 350 km east of Bangkok and is one of the most underrated islands in all of Thailand.
The island is equipped with all modern conveniences such as high-speed fibre Internet, modern health clinics, supermarkets and many fantastic restaurants. Although, you don’t come to Koh Chang for its facilities. The wild nature is what draws you in and leaves you wanting more.
Seventy percent of the island is untouched rainforest with steep mountains, waterfalls and a great diversity of wildlife. Then you have beautiful beaches and sea which makes this island a paradise.
Mu Koh Chang National Park ensures that the jungle and ocean stay protected. So you won’t find any jet ski’s and banana boats in Koh Chang. Instead, you can go on scuba diving and snorkelling adventures and explore the ocean with a kayak or a stand-up paddle board.
What Inspired me to Move to Koh Chang
Travel has always been a big part of my life. In 2006 I set off on an overland journey with my girlfriend Marieke in a Mercedes Unimog from the Netherlands to Namibia and back. We drove 70,000 kms through different countries and worked in Tanzania and Malawi on the way.
We loved this journey and particularly enjoyed working in hospitality in Africa. Back in the Netherlands, we returned to our jobs – myself as a web designer and Marieke as a social worker in forensic psychiatry. We started saving money again for our next trip.
In May 2011, we took a flight to Singapore. The plan was to make an overland trip with our Toyota Land Cruiser (which we shipped from the Netherlands to Malaysia) through Southeast Asia. Our goal was to start our own tourism business as we travelled through this epic region of the world.
If not, we would drive from Southeast Asia back to the Netherlands. After six months of travel through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia – we found ourselves on Koh Chang and we went for a little walk. We found Oasis on this walk and it was love at first sight.
The former owners were looking to sell this business. After a further six months of living at Oasis, gaining information, doing our own investigating and negotiating – we bought Oasis in May 2012. We never looked back from this moment onwards. What a place Koh Chang turned out to be!
It took a few months to sink in that we were actually going to live on this beautiful island. I’ll never forget this feeling and until today I still realise how lucky we are. Sometimes I go to the beach, jump in the ocean and turn around and look at the island – realising we made the right choice.
Favourite Place in Koh Chang: East Side of the Island
Koh Chang is such an easy-going and relaxing place. I love having the opportunity to be on the beach or in the jungle on a daily basis. Every now and then we enjoy a party and life is great. This island has everything!
Personally, I really love the east side of the island. It’s still quiet and there are many places that would be considered “hidden gems”. The eastern regions are big enough to feel remote which makes it an excellent place to explore and take unique photos. I always enjoy my visits out there.
11 Best Things To Do in Koh Chang
There is a rugged spirit and beauty to this Thai island. As soon as you step foot on Koh Chang you are immersed in steep, jungle-covered peaks and endless stretches of sandy beaches. Below you will find my top recommendations for first-time visitors to this island paradise.
1. Rent a Scooter and Explore the Island
Before you do anything on Koh Chang it’s important to sort out transportation. The best way to explore the island is to hire a scooter for your entire duration. This way you will be able to move around the island – from beach to beach and bar to bar – in a carefree and convenient manner.
2. Visit the Many Stunning Beaches of Koh Chang
Like all Thai islands, the beaches of Koh Chang are one of the main highlights. Jump on your scooter and go exploring! Some of the best beaches include: Lonely Beach, White Sand Beach, Pearl Beach, Klong Prao Beach, Kai Bae Beach, Klong Kloi Beach and Salakkok Beach.
3. Enjoy the Vibrant Nightlife of Koh Chang
Not only does Koh Chang have fantastic beaches but it’s also got awesome nightlife. From quiet beach bars, to booming sports bars and full on night clubs – there is something for everyone to enjoy. Lonely Beach is the most famous party zone on the island.
4. Go on a Private Boat Trip for the Day
One of the best things to do in Koh Chang is to hire a private boat and get out on the water for a day of fun. You can head down to the Bang Bao Pier where your private boat tour awaits. Enjoy a day of snorkelling, fishing, swimming in the sea, visiting beaches and having lunch on the boat.
5. Visit the Surrounding Islands: Koh Kood & Koh Mak
Koh Chang is the most popular island in Trat but there are a few surrounding islands that are well worth visiting too. Koh Kood and Koh Mak are the two other must-visit islands. The beaches in Koh Kood are pristine and untouched, while the landscape of Koh Mak is wild and rugged.
6. Hike through the Lush Jungle of Koh Chang
The interior jungle of Koh Chang is just as worthy of a visit as the beaches are. There are plenty of hikes and treks you can do – either with guides or venturing off by yourself. Along the way you will encounter many beautiful waterfalls, lush jungle landscapes and if you’re lucky some wildlife species.
7. Try the Amazing Seafood Restaurants on the Island
Thai food is always delicious and Koh Chang is no exception to this rule. The seafood restaurants here are amazing and serve fresh fish on a daily basis. I recommend exploring the many little towns and areas on the island to find a seafood restaurant that you like the best. You won’t be disappointed!
8. Learn How to Cook Thai Food at a Cooking Class
Koh Chang offers a number of fantastic cooking schools where you can learn how to cook traditional Thai cuisine in a relaxed environment. This is a great activity if you need a day’s rest from the sun. I can recommend Blue Lagoon Cooking School and Napalai Thai Cooking School .
9. Practice your Photography in Beautiful Nature
Koh Chang is one of the best natural environments to practice your photography skills . The rugged landscapes, beaches, interior rainforest and lush mountain peaks are a photographer’s dream. Of course, there are the friendly and fun locals too who are always happy to be photographed.
10. Kayak around the Smaller Islands of Koh Chang
Kayaking is a great way to explore some of the smaller islands around Koh Chang. Many resorts have kayaks which you can hire or you can go on a guided kayaking tour. If you are staying in the Klong Prao or Kai Bae areas then there are six small islands offshore which you can explore by kayak.
11. Do some Stand-Up Paddleboarding off Lonely Beach
Lonely Beach is a backpacker haven that offers beautiful white sandy shores with warm waters to go swimming. It’s a great little spot to hang out with other travellers and go stand-up paddleboarding around the area. Not a bad way to refresh yourself after a night of partying in Koh Chang!
Amazing People, Culture and Food of Koh Chang
There are many locals living on the island. It’s a great mix of people from all over Thailand. Mostly you will find people that are adventurous and who want to build a life somewhere on an island. Over the years, we have made many friends, especially with people living here long-term.
Food is a big part of everyday life in Koh Chang. There is a great selection of restaurants with exciting new places opening up every year. The nightlife is also fantastic on Koh Chang, especially at places like Lonely Beach. Some of my favourite restaurants, bars and accommodation are:
Restaurants:
- Blue Lagoon Restaurant (Klong Prao)
- Oasis Restaurant (our own place in Lonely Beach)
- Joy Cottage (Lonely Beach)
- Buddha View Restaurant (Bang Bao)
- Cabana (Kai Bae)
- Mordi E Fuggi Italian Restaurant (Kai Bae)
- Alaturka Turkish Restaurant (White Sands Beach)
- Warapura Resort Restaurant (Lonely Beach)
- The Spa (East Koh Chang)
Bars in Lonely Beach:
- Ting Tong Bar and Club

Activities – What to Do on Koh Chang
Once you have figured out how to get to Koh Chang and where to stay, the next questions is “ What will you do when you are here? ” Here are some ideas about activities and how to spend your time when you aren’t sunbathing, lazing in the pool or enjoying some delicious Thai food . This is a quick rundown of the main activities, trips and tours that are available for visitors to the island.
Scuba Diving
Koh Chang is starting to become a popular dive destination. This is mainly due to the newbie friendly dive sites in the Koh Chang Marine Park, and the selection of well-run dive schools on the island.
The diving runs all year round, but for good visibility and calm waters, the best time to visit is between November and May. With the lack of strong currents and shallow waters, Koh Chang is becoming popular with beginners learning to dive or refreshing their skills.
The Marine Park provides a diverse range of diving, from coral pinnacles to shallow sloping reefs. There is also the recently sunk Royal Thai navy ship HTMS Chang, this sunken ship has become a home for a range of marine life, including barracuda, eel, and the odd sea turtle. From December – February, Whale Sharks can also be seen. But you’ll need some luck to see one as sightings aren’t guaranteed
BB Divers are the largest outfit on the island and are located in Lonely Beach, White Sand, and Bang Bao. They offer a variety of programs for beginners to the advanced. Another top choice is Scuba Dawgs , they are usually busy and offer some very competitive prices. Scuba Dawgs have shops in Kai Bae, Lonely Beach, and Bang Bao.

Elephant Trekking on Koh Chang
Elephant camps are currently a controversial subject due to the treatment, or lack of, of elephants in some of the camps in Thailand. But there is no hiding from the fact that elephants and the camps are one of Thailand’s top tourist attractions. My advice would be to read up on each camp before you arrive and check other visitors reviews, before making your choice.
There are currently 6 elephant camps on ‘Elephant Island’, these camps provide the chance to join them for a swim, feed them and, of course, take a ride on the elephants. The most popular and apparently humane elephant camp is Ban Kwan Chang , supported by the Asian Elephant Foundation, the camp is located in Klong Son which is away from the resorts, but in our opinion worth making the journey. Here you will witness the elephants in their natural quiet environment, surrounded by jungle and fruit farms.
All the camps charge a standard price for the activities. 800 Baht for an hour trek and 1,300 Baht for a 2-hour trek, this also includes bathing the elephants in the river. Prices include transfer to and from the hotel, plus fruit and drinks.
If you want to see young elephants having fun, then the calves from Meechai Elephant Camp in Kai Bae can often be seen on the beach or playing in the sea near KB Hut & KB Resort.
Snorkelling Trips around Koh Chang
There are 46 other islands in the Koh Chang archipelago, so you can understand why boat trips out of Koh Chang is one of the most popular activities for visiting tourists. There is a wide range of companies to choose from, each offering an array of tours. The majority of them are snorkelling trips while visiting the surrounding islands of Koh Chang. Other companies focus on fishing and kayaking tours.
The most common trip advertised is the ‘five island’ snorkelling tour. The boats depart from Bang Bao or Kai Bae beach on the west coast of Koh Chang, and head into the Marine Park, towards Koh Rong, Koh Wai, and small islands which are home to a wide variety of reef fish.
The boat trips are for a whole day or half day, the price will include transfers from your accommodation and lunch. The tours are conducted on speed boats or large wooden boats. Prices start at around 600 Baht for a day trip by wooden boat; 900 Baht by speedboat and up to around 1,300 Baht for one of the more ‘Western’ sightseeing / snorkelling trips. It’s possible to hire a wooden boat for a private boat trip for around 4,000 Baht or a speedboat for 7,000 Baht upwards. Life jackets are provided on all boats.
Mr. Khai Tours and Attipol Tour are the two most popular locally owned tour companies on the island, both offer a full range of tours and activities. Contact Kai Bae Hut for prices and information on renting a speedboat , with captain, for a day trip.
Thai Cooking Classes
If you’re looking to escape the weather for the day, a popular option is to visit a Thai cooking school, join a class and learn the basics of Thai cooking.
There are a few cooking schools on the island, each offering similar kind of classes. You will learn to prepare and cook 4-5 meals, learning new skills and techniques as you go. The main dishes you’ll probably end up learning to cook is a starter, noodles, Thai curry and dessert, and the best bit…you get to eat whatever you cook.
The price of the courses are from around 1,000 – 1,500 Baht per person, which will include a pick up from your resort. The most popular Thai cooking school is Blue Lagoon , located at the southern end of Klong Prao. Established 13 years ago, Blue Lagoon has made a name for itself on Koh Chang as the, go to place to learn Thai cooking. Classes are thoroughly taught from start to finish, where you will learn about the different Thai spices and ingredients before you even get to lift a knife.
Classes run once a day, starting at 11.00 am and finishing around 4.00 pm, with a maximum of 8 people per class.
Other, equally good and very popular Thai cooking schoosl worth checking out are Kati Culinary and Napalai – both also based in Klong Prao.
Koh Chang Jungle Trekking
Trekking on Koh Chang has become more and more popular in the last few years. This is mainly down to a few small companies starting to get more organised by arranging tours across different parts of the island.
It is not easy to trek independently on the island as there aren’t any easy to follow trails. So most visitors choose to go with a guide who will not only know all the different routes but also point out wildlife the untrained eye may not spot. The main routes are around the Klong Son Valley and Klong Prao beach, Kai Bae area. There is also the cross-island trail connecting Klong Plu waterfall with Than Mayom waterfall.
If you’re feeling overly energetic, then there are also routes scaling up the two highest peaks on Koh Chang. Salak Phet (744m) and Khao Jom Prasad (630m), the latter rewarding you with views over the White Sand beach.
The guides offer half day or full day treks, with transfers, food, water and most importantly mosquito repellent included in the price. Three of the most popular trekking companies on Koh Chang are Tan Trekking , Koh Chang Jungle Trekking , and Jungle Fever Trekking . All come with great reviews and glowing reports.
Waterfalls on Ko Chang Island
Thanks to Koh Chang’s mountainous terrain and 70% of the island covered in rainforest, there is a plethora of breathtaking waterfalls. There are eight noteworthy waterfalls on the island, some being more easily reachable than others. Below are three popular waterfalls on Koh Chang, with a brief description on each. A very pleasant activity that’s ideal for families. There are others – Kai Bae waterfall, in particular, is worth seeking out. And if you do a jungle trek you’ll see numerous small, unnamed waterfalls hidden in the interior of the island.
Klong Plu – Due to it being the easiest accessible waterfall on the west coast, Klong Plu waterfall is the most popular on the island. Located towards the northern end of Klong Prao, a 15-minute walk through the jungle will lead to this impressive waterfall. Visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds. You’ll need to pay 200 Baht ( Adults ) & 100 Baht ( Children) entry fee as the waterfall is within the National Park boundaries.
Than Mayom – Located a few km’s south of Dan Mai on the east coast of the island. Than Mayom waterfall consists of four levels, but unless you are on a guided trek you won’t see the 4th tier, which also happens to be the most dramatic. This waterfall is a good choice for families with kids, to visit. It’s very popular with Thais as two Kings visited the waterfall well over 100 years ago and carved their names into the rocks.
Klong Neung – This is the tallest waterfall on the island, unfortunately, it’s also the trickiest to get to, due to its remote location. If you decide to make the trek to Klong Neung, you’ll be rewarded with some amazing scenery, you’ll also probably be the only one there too. Access is by walking up the riverbed for around 1Km from a now defunct parking area at the end of an inland road.
Spas & Massages
After a days jungle trekking, why not treat yourself to a traditional Thai massage? Koh Chang, like the rest of Thailand is home to dozens of places to receive a Thai massage. From beds on the beach to large spas, all offering the usual head, neck, and full body massage, plus a whole array of other therapy’s and treatments.
As there are a lot of businesses offering Thai massage, naturally some are better than others. If you find a place you like the look of, try and find some reviews online, or even better ask around locally for recommendations. It can be a bit hit and miss.
Two of the most popular places on the island are Bodiwork and Sima Massage . Bodiwork Spa is based in Klong Prao and they also have a shop in Kai Bae. They offer Thai massage for around 400 Baht per person, lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. If you’re wanting to learn Thai massage, Bodiwork run a 10-hour course, costing 5,000 Baht.
Sima massage can be found just past Kati Culinary school in central Klong Prao Beach. A very welcoming shop highly recommended across the island with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Sima massage offers a full range of treatments and massage.
Other Activities
There are now three Muay Thai gyms on Koh Chang. These offer both introductory classes for beginners and weekly or monthly courses for people who want to hoe their Thai boxing skills. The camps are located in Klong prao, Kai Bae and Bailan. Hourly training is around 500 – 600 Baht. And monthly course with class for an hour per day runs to 9 or 10,000 Baht. These are ideal for anyone wanting to hone their fighting skills or simply get fit very quickly.
Kayak Chang offers some great day trips and 3 – 10 day sea kayaking adventures. Plus they run BCU certified training courses yearly. If you’re looking for a unique experience and seeing islands that other visitors won’t get to, then check them out.
For the more adventurous, you’ll also find a couple of places , in Chai Chet and Klong Prao village, where you can take an ATV tour inland.
And in Bailan, a good day out for families with teenagers is the Treetop Adventure Park . They have a couple of routes through the trees, comprising rope bridges, ziplines, ladders etc.

Thailand: Riding a scooter on Ko Samet
Ko Samet is a relatively small island off the east coast off Thailand. It takes about 4-5 hours to get here from Bangkok. Large part of the island is a National Park with some of the accommodations are inside the national park. Everyone entering the National Park must pay a 200 Bath/person entry fee. This is a fee that has to be paid only once. The roads inside the national park are in a terrible condition so expect a bumpy ride with the taxi 🙂
Riding a scooter is one of the most popular transportation method on the island. Virtually everyone is riding a scooter here from the 10 year old kids to the 80 year old grandmas. It is not uncommon to see 3-4 persons on the same bike. I am not sure if anyone here has a drivers licence 🙂 We have only seen trucks and scooters absolutely no cars which is understandable as there is no room for parking. Most of the trucks are taxis and they work on fixed price ( which is displayed at the Nadan pier pickup point ) unfortunately there is no room for haggling here.
You can rent a scooter for about 250 Bath / day or 100 Bath / hour . The roads outside of the National Park are in a better condition so try your biking skills there as there are only dirt roads inside the National Park. During the monsoon season these roads are in a terrible condition several pot holes and bumps makes it an unforgettable experience to drive here 😀 Most of the scooters for rent are around 120cc which you will obviously need on these roads. Don’t worry about not having a motorbike license nobody actually cares about this as well as nobody cares about the rules of the road either. We have seen very few traffic signs on the island, the most notable one is the “No Entry” sign near the ferry port.. needless to say everyone was riding straight through it 😀
To summarize this: It is a lot of fun to drive a scooter on Ko Samet but you need to be very careful with the locals driving on the same road as they don’t tend to realise that others are also part of the traffic 😀
