Minister for Tourism visits Japan

Australia’s Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, the Hon. Dan Tehan MP, visited Japan last week and held a roundtable meeting with seven key distribution partners in Japan, including major travel agencies and airlines, at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.

The purpose of the meeting was to understand the current situation of Japan's travel industry in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and discuss the marketing and relaunch of travel between Australia and Japan when borders reopen.

In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to maximise in-market activities to support the Australian tourism market from Japan.

The Memorandum of Understanding will further strengthen Tourism Australia’s relationships with industry stakeholders and reinforce the strong ties between the two countries.

Japan is one of the most important tourism markets for Australia, with almost 500,000 visitors from Japan in 2019, contributing A$2.1 billion to the Australian economy.

New chair for Tourism Australia

australia minister for tourism

Hotel industry leader Michael Issenberg has been named as the new chair of Tourism Australia, following the departure of Bob East late last month.

Issenberg has worked for Accor for more than 25 years, most recently as the chairman and CEO of AccorHotels Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. Prior to that, he spent five years at Mirvac Hotels, including three years as CEO.

Tourism Minister Dan Tehan said Tourism Australia would play an important role in supporting the local tourism sector as restrictions are lifted and international tourism resumes.

“Australia’s tourism industry is looking forward to the fast-approaching day when we welcome back international visitors,” he said.

“Mr Issenberg’s leadership will be crucial to promote Australia’s world-leading tourist attractions and entice even more visitors to holiday in our country

“He brings to the role a wealth of experience and great energy and commitment to support the industry and its 660,000 workers and businesses.

“I look forward to working with Michael and his team as Australia opens back up to the world.”

Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) chief executive Margy Osmond said Issenberg is a “fantastic appointment and will greatly strengthen our collective tourism industry and government efforts to get the industry back on its feet in what will be a long and challenging COVID-19 recovery”.

“Our industry has faced the fight of its life over the last 18 months, but as restrictions start to ease and as we start to welcome back international students, skilled workers and tourists, Michael’s appointment will greatly support what will be a major international inbound market rebuild,” she said.

“Michael is a lifetime member of Tourism & Transport Forum Australia, served on the TTF board for many years and is one of Australia’s tourism stalwarts with a wealth of knowledge and expertise.”

Additionally, Queensland’s Annabel Dolphin joins Tourism Australia’s board, Jeffrey Ellison will serve a second term as deputy chair, and John Hart has also been reappointed for a second term.

Vietnam becomes fastest-growing tourism market of Australia

T he number of Vietnamese tourists to Australia grew more than 50% as compared with the pre-Covid pandemic level, Australian Tourism and Trade Minister Don Farrell said on Wednesday.

The number promises growth opportunities for Austrian firms, he said, noting that to help them optimize opportunities in Southeast Asia, the tourism research data has, for the first time, included information about Vietnam, the fastest-growing passenger market of Australia.

The minister said his agency will work harder to enhance connection with Southeast Asia and attract more visitors from the region.

According to the official, New Zealand, China, the U.S., the U.K., and India are currently Australia's top five international tourism markets, and Australia is working hard to encourage more and more visitors from around the world to book a holiday in the country.

He said international tourist numbers are close to recovering to pre-pandemic levels and visitors are splashing more money in Australia.

Some 150,000 Vietnamese visited Australia in 2023, while the number of Australian travelers to Vietnam in 2023 reached 390,000, compared to the 383,000 in 2019.

In the first five months of this year, Vietnam welcomed 213,000 Australian visitors, an increase of 35% year-on-year, making Australia the seventh largest source of tourists to the Southeast Asian nation.

Visit to bolster China-Australia biz ties

By ZHONG NAN | CHINA DAILY | Updated: 2023-05-12 07:22

australia minister for tourism

The visit of Don Farrell, Australia's minister for trade and tourism, to China from Thursday to Saturday, is expected to boost bilateral trade and tackle common concerns through economic exchange mechanisms, said government officials and experts on Thursday.

Farrell will co-chair the 16th China-Australia Joint Ministerial Economic Commission with Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao in Beijing, said Shu Jueting, a spokeswoman of the Ministry of Commerce.

This will be the first visit by an Australian trade minister to China in nearly four years. The last China-Australia Joint Ministerial Economic Commission was held in Beijing in 2017.

China hopes that through this visit, the two sides will further implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of China and Australia at their meeting in Bali in November 2022, said Shu.

She also said China hopes to exchange views with Australia on developing bilateral economic and trade relations, addressing each other's concerns and promoting business cooperation.

In a statement on Thursday, Farrell said he will strongly advocate the full resumption of unimpeded Australian exports to China — for all sectors — to the benefit of both countries and in the interests of Australian exporters and producers.

The statement said that the Australian government was pleased with several positive trade developments since the trade ministers of China and Australia agreed to enhance dialogue at all levels to fully resume trade in February. These developments include the resumption of coal, cotton and copper trade and China's agreement to undertake an expedited review of duties on Australian barley.

During his visit, Farrell will meet with some other Chinese officials and business representatives as well as Australian businesses and workers operating in China.

Trade experts said Farrell's visit to China is a key step to stabilize bilateral business ties in the next stage.

Amid the fast-changing global political and economic landscape, dialogue is certainly practical and beneficial. China, as a global manufacturing base that requires imports of ores and coal, and Australia, as a major exporter of materials for industrial use, can establish a complementary economic structure, said Wang Xueling, a researcher specializing in regional economic development at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Phillipa Harrison, managing director of Tourism Australia, a government agency responsible for attracting foreign visitors, said with the easing of COVID-19 control measures for international travel to and from China, the agency remains optimistic about the outlook for the industry this year and beyond.

China was Australia's largest source market for both international visits and spending in 2019. About 1.44 million Chinese residents traveled to Australia, making up 15 percent of all international arrivals in the country. In all, they spent around A$12.4 billion ($8.35 billion).

China-Australia trade declined by 3.9 percent year-on-year to $220.92 billion in 2022, data from China's General Administration of Customs showed.

Thanks to improved political and business ties, their total bilateral trade value surged 10.9 percent on a yearly basis to $58.79 billion in the first quarter of this year.

Australia mainly exports iron ore, coal, alumina, copper ore, wool, wine, timber, grains, fruits and aquatic and dairy products to China. Computers, transport equipment, mechanical and electrical products, electric vehicles and chemical products are China's main shipments to Australia.

Queensland government pumps $10m into regional tourism as outback operators report 'very quiet' season

A drone shot of a car down an outback road surrounded by green

Outback Queensland tourism operators have raised concerns over a lacklustre tourism season that has them asking visitors: "Where the bloody hell are you?"

Businesses are "cautiously concerned to pessimistic" about whether the usual midyear influx of caravanners and grey nomads is coming at all.

"If we compare it to pre-COVID visitation, it's way down," cafe owner Yvonne Tunney said.

Woman standing in front of fish and chip shop

Ms Tunney runs a cafe and accommodation in Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria, a small coastal town that relies heavily on tourism.

"It's been perfect weather and fishing's been great … but like everywhere else is reporting, it's very quiet as far as tourism numbers and activity goes," she said.

"For those who come out here regularly, they just can't believe it."

Alan Smith, owner of Outback Aussie Tours, was concerned about the financial impact on small, tourism-dependent towns.

A white man in a broad hat leaning against a tree.

"When you get a stinger like this when it's slow to start, it's really going to put them under a lot of pressure," he said.

"You can only make so much money out of two or three months."

"I think we're going to lose people out of the communities and out of the business if this stuff continues much longer."

Mr Smith said after "two of the best years of tourism" during the pandemic, the pendulum was now swinging the other way.

"The economy's been tightened and it's time to pay back that COVID debt," he said.

A tour bus parked on a red sand dune with people standing around and the sun setting in front.

To the west, the Birdsville Big Red Bash is one of the outback's biggest, most iconic music events, and draws thousands to the desert dunes every year.

It kicks off in less than two weeks, but it too has been hit by reduced patronage.

Organiser Greg Donovan said ticket sales were down compared to previous years " like all other festivals at the moment."

"A lot of people are now moving back to overseas travel … particularly the demographic that comes out to the bash," he said.

So where are the tourists?

It's the Macquarie Dictionary 2023 Word of the Year: "Cozzie livs".

The cost of living — fuel, groceries, and travel have all skyrocketed, meaning for many it is cheaper to travel overseas than it is to travel within their own state.

Headshot of Queensland's Tourism Minister Michael Healy.

The state government is stepping in and investing $10 million to fund 57 regional tourism projects.

The hope is these projects, which range from installing accessible footpaths to building an equine healing therapy centre in Chinchilla, will entice tourists to travel in Queensland, rather than go abroad.

Minister for Tourism Michael Healy said the money will bring nearly 300,000 additional visitors to the regions.

"We want to encourage as many people as possible to experience the wonders of Outback Queensland," he said.

Can Queenslanders afford to travel right now?

On an ABC North West Queensland Facebook post describing the slow tourism season out west, hundreds of people weighed in.

"Airports and planes are packed … cheaper to head overseas than holiday at home unfortunately," Leanne Seaton said.
"Maybe the cost of caravan parks on top of increased fuel costs and grocery costs are making it out of reach for tourists," another commented.
"This will be a trend over the next 20+ years as the level of retirees fall due to the need to work longer just to live. The 2010-COVID days probably saw the peak in retirees and grey nomads for our era," commented Davis Walshe.

The Malaysian hospitality industry took a significant step towards sustainable tourism with the launch of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) certification for hotels and resorts. This pioneering initiative is a collaborative effort between SGS, the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) and SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED.

On June 14, 2024, all parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and officially launched the ESG certification. Surya Kumar, Undersecretary of the Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division from The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) attended the event as the guest of honor.

Officially Supported by MOTAC

Officially supported by MOTAC, ESG Certification for Malaysian Hotels & Resorts aims to provide clear guidelines and a comprehensive, holistic and measurable checklist for hotels and resorts in Malaysia. The certification will serve as the industry's benchmark, following the nation's 2030 vision for sustainable tourism. By adopting these standards, hotels and resorts can ensure they operate in an environmentally responsible, socially equitable and well-governed manner.

Pathways to ESG certification

There are a few steps to achieve and maintain ESG certification specifically designed for the Malaysian hospitality industry:

  • Engagement and commitment Hotels and resorts begin their journey towards ESG certification by participating in Basic ESG Training from SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED. This initial step introduces the requirements of certification and provides essential knowledge of ESG principles. By engaging in this training, establishments can better understand the expectations involved in pursuing the certification, allowing them to assess their level of commitment and readiness for the process.
  • Pre-assessment and gap analysis Following training, hotels and resorts undergo a pre-assessment and gap analysis conducted by SGS. This comprehensive process evaluates the establishment's current practices and performance against the established ESG framework, identifying areas needed for improvement.
  • Implementation Based on the findings of the gap analysis, SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED facilitates hotels and resorts to develop and implement action plans to address identified gaps and enhance their performance in key ESG areas. These action plans are tailored to the specific needs and priorities of each establishment, ensuring targeted and effective improvements.
  • Reporting Once the necessary improvements have been made, hotels and resorts undergo a rigorous certification audit conducted by SGS. This audit evaluates the establishment's adherence to the ESG framework and assesses its eligibility for certification.
  • ESG certification award Upon successful completion of the audit process and verification of compliance with ESG standards, hotels and resorts are awarded ESG certification. This prestigious certification serves as a testament to their dedication to sustainable practices and responsible tourism.
  • Certification renewals To maintain certification status, hotels and resorts undergo yearly renewals. This ensures that certified establishments continue to uphold ESG standards and remain committed to sustainability in the long term.

Our expertise in ESG

As the appointed certification body, SGS provides comprehensive services including GAP analysis, auditing and certification. Our rigorous standards and thorough evaluation processes ensure that hotels and resorts meet the highest levels of environmental, social and governance criteria. Our expertise in conducting detailed assessments and providing actionable feedback is critical in helping establishments achieve and maintain ESG compliance.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — The new prime minister of the Solomon Islands said Wednesday that his visits to Australia and China are focussed on creating jobs in the developing South Pacific island nation.

Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele met his counterpart Anthony Albanese in the Australian capital of Canberra, during his first overseas trip since being elected last month . Manele will next visit China, and then Japan.

“We are keen to work with all partners, with Australia and China, (on) how we can partner together to create transformational projects and programs in Solomon Islands that create jobs,” Manele said at a joint press conference with Albanese.

The Solomons is on the front line in competition between the United States and China for influence in the Pacific.

During the five-year term of Manele’s predecessor, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, China’s influence increased dramatically.

Sogavare switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to Beijing , and struck a secret security pact that has raised fears of the Chinese navy gaining a foothold in the region.

The election of Manele, Sogavare’s former foreign minister and chosen successor , suggests the country will continue to follow a similar direction.

Albanese said Australia provides economic support for its Pacific neighbors that has mutual benefits and is not transactional.
