The city played an essential role during the Industrial Revolution and has become a hub for industrial activities. It has become more vibrant and incorporated more greenery into its infrastructure, giving the town a stronger sense of community. The city is now home to many parks and woodlands for students to enjoy during their classes. Whether you enjoy the outdoors or just want to relax at a cafe, there's something for everyone. The city is one of the most student-friendly cities in the UK. Home to many world-renowned universities like the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University , the city offers students a chance to pursue high-quality education in an enjoyable environment. The city is also rich in geographical diversity; it is nestled in the foothills of the Pennines in the east, with District National Park in the west and a stream of five rivers in the south, Don, Sheaf, Rivelin, Loxley and Porter. With really high-altitude places as well as low-lying ones, the city is prone to floods quite often. Although the city public system has got all problems covered to ensure hassle-free living. Sheffield accommodations, anyway, are one of the most perfect stays for students who seek comfort and efficiency.

About University Of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield, commonly known as Sheffield University, is the successor to University College of Sheffield established in 1897 as a result of a merger between Sheffield Medical School (established in 1828), Firth College (founded in 1879) and Sheffield Technical School (established in 1884). It is a public research university located in the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, UK. In 2016, the university accounted for 20,005 undergraduate and 8,710 postgraduate students! That’s a lot of chances to make new friends. This fine institution is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, the N8 Group of 8 and is considered one of the most research-intensive universities in Northern England, known as the White Rose University Consortium, as well as the Worldwide Universities Network.

Let’s talk about awards, because this University is laden with impressive grads and accolades a mile long. Sheffield is affiliated with 8 Nobel Laureates, 6 of which are former staff or alumni of the school. The QS World University Rankings have placed Sheffield University 75th in the world, while Times Higher Education World University Rankings have awarded Sheffield the 104th position. According to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework Sheffield was ranked 12th overall in the UK for its Research Power and made its way into the multi-faculty higher educational institutions for the quality (GPA) of its own research. Whew, that’s a slew of honours! But were not done yet.

In the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards, Sheffield was named ‘University of the Year’ and in terms of student experience, social life, accommodation and university facilities (among many other categories), Sheffield was ranked 1st by the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey of 2014. Now, this sounds like a place where education leads to adulation and young scholars can flourish. Only one thing left to do…

University accommodation

This article introduces typical university accommodation options available and provides some tips for making the right choice for you.

Once you have an offer of a place at university you will need to think about where you would like to live. If you decide that you want to live away from home, your chosen university typically offers a variety of accommodation options suited to different budget, group sizes and lifestyle preferences.

How could this affect me?

As you will spend a lot of time in your accommodation, it is important that you make the right choice for you. You may be sharing facilities such as kitchen and social spaces with your flatmates. Everybody has their own way of living, socialising and thresholds for cleanliness and noise levels.

During our research, autistic students have told us things they liked and didn’t like about their accommodation. These were related to the size of rooms, noise levels, distance to shops, availability of quiet spaces, the study choices and maturity of fellow tenants, and more.

What to do next?

Find out more about the options available at your university and choose your accommodation, questions to think about.

Think about:

  • Whether you want to live in lively student accommodation, in the city centre, or if you would prefer a quieter location?
  • Do you need an en-suite room?
  • Do you need catered or self-catered accommodation?
  • Do you need to have your own kitchen and bathroom (studio accommodation)?
  • Do you want to live close to the University and department buildings that you’ll be using most often?
  • Think about how you will travel to your academic department buildings? Will you walk, cycle, travel by public transport?
  • How many people you would be comfortable sharing accommodation with?

Your RLM is a really good person to ask any queries or discuss concerns with.  If they can’t help or don’t know the answer, they’ll signpost you to someone who can.

RLMs hold a Drop-In session every evening during term time. Your assigned RLM will contact you via email and will visit your flat/room approximately once every two weeks.  Please discuss any communication preferences with your RLM when they first introduce themselves.
