QUEEN will tour Australia in August with Adam Lambert as guest vocalist.

Lambert first worked with Queen when they joined him on A m erican Idol in 2009.

His vocal range has been compared to the man he will replace — the late Freddie Mercury.

Queen and Adam Lambert will play Perth Arena on August 22, Sydney’s Allphones Arena on August 26, Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on August 29 and Brisbane Entertainment Centre on September 1. Tickets go on sale May 28.

Early days ... Queen members John Deacon, Brian May, Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor.

It will the first time Queen have toured Australia since 1985, however only guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor remain from the original line-up.

Mercury died in 1991, original bassist John Deacon last played with Queen in 1997.

The band, who have played a handful of shows with Lambert over the last three years, have hinted this will could be their final tour.

“This may be the last chance Australian fans have to see one of the greatest rock bands in history,” promoter Paul Dainty said.

It will be the first time Lambert has committed to Queen for an extended period of time, with a US tour starting in June.

“I’m completely in awe of the Queen phenomenon,” Lambert said. “The thought of sharing the stage for a full set in Australia is so beautifully surreal. I’m honoured to be able to pay my respects to Freddie’s memory; he’s a personal hero of mine, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band.

“I know this tour will be a huge milestone for me, and with the support of Brian, Roger and the rest of the band, I feel like magic will be on display.”

May and Taylor reactivated Queen as a touring act in 2005 with Free/Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers.

While they recorded an album, The Cosmos Rocks, it peaked at No. 49 in Australia in 2008, but was Top 5 in the UK.

Lambert, who was discovered on American Idol, has toured Australia on his own before and is working on a new album after leaving major label Sony.

Queen’s classic Bohemian Rhapsody was the song Lambert auditioned for American Idol with.

DEATH IS NO OBSTACLE — OTHER REPLACEMENT SINGERS

After Michael Hutchence’s death in 1997 INXS have toured with three different singers — first Jon Stevens, then JD Fortune (from reality show Rock Star INXS) and most recently Irish Ciarin Gribbin. They stopped touring in 2012 however renewed interest in the band this year after the Never Tear Us Apart TV miniseries has led to rumours they may hit the road again.

Singer Bon Scott died in 1980, replaced by Brian Johnson whose first recording with the band was their highest-selling album Back in Black. He continues to sing tracks Scott made famous in AC/DC and regularly pays tribute the man who he replaced, joking he is still “the new guy” over 30 years later.

IN 2002 Doors members Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger formed The Doors of the 21st Century, with Cult frontman Ian Astbury as vocalist. He was eventually replaced by Brett Scallions of one-hit-wonders Fuel and the project wound up after the death of Manzarek last year.

The British band responsible for one of the biggest songs of the last decade has just announced a string of shows.

Another major music festival has been canned for good, citing rising costs and low ticket sales as a reason for its demise.

Justin Timberlake’s team have hit back over footage of the singer that’s circulated widely in the wake of his drunken driving arrest last week.

The Works Tour

The tour was notable for the grand stage designs, large venues, and a diverse setlist. Songs like Great King Rat , Keep Yourself Alive , and Liar — all of which had been left off the band's setlist for years— would appear in shortened forms during the tour.

Several concerts from the tour saw release in various formats. A recording of the band's concert at the Rio de Janeiro was released as Rock in Rio on vinyl and DVD formats. Another DVD was released from a concert in Tokyo titled We Are the Champions: Final Live in Japan .

History [ ]

Stage design [ ].

The stage design was based on a scene from Fritz Lang's  Metropolis  with huge rotating cog-wheels at the rear of the stage and a brightly lit cityscape and a mural based on the background from the Radio Ga Ga music video. The huge wheels behind the stage (modelled after the ones on The Works album cover) rotate at mostly random times - usually because they are turned manually by various crew members such as Roger's tech Chris "Crystal" Taylor whenever they have a free moment.

The lighting rig was one of the largest that Queen would use throughout their career, featuring a bird-like design adorned with red, green, white, blue, and yellow lights. The top portion moves up and down resembling the pizza oven from the Jazz tour . This was the first lighting rig used by the band that was controlled via a computer system.

Performances [ ]

The Works, although not one of Queen's most diverse albums, proved that the band still had it's rock and pop sensibilities that went virtually unseen during the commercial failure of the Hot Space album (and subsequently the Hot Space tour). This combination of chart-dominating songs like Radio Ga Ga, Hammer To Fall, and I Want To Break Free made the album a worldwide success when it released on 27 February 1984.

On the 12th of May 1984, Queen appeared at the Golden Rose Pop Festival in Montreux, miming 4 songs from their recently-released album. The tour proper began in Brussels on the 24th of August 1984.

Initially, at the start of the tour, the band were all in good form, especially Freddie, as this night in Brussels is often referred to one of his best post-prime performances (AKA any outstanding performance post-Milton Keynes). He's in great form, nailing songs like Seven Seas of Rhye and It's A Hard Life. Unfortunately, his voice would quickly wear out, due to his frequent partying, smoking/drinking habits and his poor singing technique, which took a toll on his voice for this tour, resulting in his voice practically being worn out by the third night in Birmingham, even remarking before It's A Hard Life, "If I don't hit this first note, I'll kill myself!" He hits the note, although strained, prompting a quick switch to falsetto for the rest of the intro. Speaking of the third night in Birmingham, it is on this night that the band switches from Sheer Heart Attack to Jailhouse Rock as an encore.

Compared to Freddie, John, Roger and Brian are still in great form. However, Fred's vocals are still in for a rough time, especially on the four London concerts. After the second night, which was on Fred's 38th birthday, a massive party is held, and Fred gets trashed. This leaves his voice almost completely shot for the third night, where he even skips lines in Staying Power. His voice starts to recover by the first night in Milan, however, two notable things happen on this night. First, Staying Power sees it's last performance tonight, and Fred does alright with it. However, it is also here that the band start losing steam, and start playing more "by-the-books".

As unfortunate as it seems, Queen were going through a jaded period in 1984, and this almost certainly worsened in 1985. Fights between the band members were never more common and if Live Aid didn't happen, it's almost certain they'd have split up.

Unfortunately, the band's cycle of mediocrity continues until Leiden, on the 20th, where they sound more reinvigorated, and Freddie, for the tour at least, sounds good. Brian plays a verse and chorus of '39 on his acoustic guitar, with Freddie throwing the few words in he remembers, as he hadn't sung it in 5 years. However, this would soon change. The next night, a second night in Brussels, Freddie is once again in poor shape. This is ironic, considering on the first night, he sounded the best he had since Milton Keynes. And it would soon worsen on the next night, in Hanover. The band were going through the motions here, and Freddie sounds pretty bad too. However on this night, a major incident takes place at this show.

Due to prior damage in his knee, it was tough for Fred to navigate the stairs and platforms of the stage. At the end of Hammer to Fall, Freddie falls down the stairs of the stage. This injures his leg and he and the rest of Queen convene and they axe Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Radio Ga-Ga, I Want to Break Free, and Jailhouse Rock. Brian flubs his We Will Rock You solo out of anxiety, presumably to get Freddie to the hospital as soon as possible.

After this incident, Freddie is fitted with a leg brace, and the tour picks up again at Berlin's Deutschlandhalle on the 24th. From this night onwards to Stuttgart on the 27th, the band seem to be putting in more effort, with Freddie making a definite improvement. However, this resurgence in vigor is lost on the two nights in Vienna on the 29th and 30th respectively. While only Freddie sounds monotonous on the first, everyone sounds uninspired on the second night. After this, Queen would go to play 9 controversial shows in Sun City.

Following the disappointing reception to Hot Space and the lengthy and often grueling world tour, the band decided to take a break from each other and either work on their own or take some time to relax with their families. For three-quarters of the band, 1983 started off peacefully enough, until their own creative juices started to flow again, and solo work became the priority for the year: in April, Brian worked with a group of four friends on what would become Star Fleet Project , while Freddie and Roger worked on their first ( Mr. Bad Guy ) and second solo albums ( Strange Frontier ), respectively. John, meanwhile, did some light session work, but spent his time mostly not playing any music whatsoever.

In the summer of 1983, the band's manager, Jim Beach , was in discussions with director Tony Richardson, who was working on a film adaptation of John Irving's 1981 novel, The Hotel New Hampshire . The band were approached to provide a soundtrack to the film, and, despite (or perhaps in spite) of the experiences endured while working on Flash Gordon in 1980, the band agreed. However, at the same time, they had also agreed to work on their next studio album, meaning that they would be recording two projects simultaneously. The band reconvened in August at The Record Plant in Los Angeles, becoming the first (and only) time that the band would record in the United States; sessions commenced with stunning productivity, though it became apparent that working on two major projects at the same time was exhausting and time-consuming. Richardson, using the excuse of an insufficient budget, let the band go of the project; one known song, Freddie's Keep Passing The Open Windows , had been written and recorded for the film before Richardson's decision.

Hardly losing any sleep over the loss, the band continued working on their album, switching midway through the sessions from Los Angeles to Munich. Ten known songs - all that ended up on the album, as well as the non-album B-side I Go Crazy - were recorded, though additional outtakes include songs that ended up on Freddie's first solo album ( There Must Be More To Life Than This and Man Made Paradise ) as well as his first single ( Love Kills ), while Freddie explained that Roger had written about four or five songs for the album before coming up with Radio Ga Ga (it's likely these songs were ultimately released on Roger's second solo album). Brian, too, was writing more, and reportedly submitted Let Me In (Your Heart Again) for the sessions, which was recorded but remained unreleased; the song would later be given to his girlfriend Anita Dobson , who recorded it in 1987 on her debut album, Talking Of Love . More mundanely, the foundation of Let Me Live was recorded in Los Angeles as Another Piece Of My Heart , a brief jam with Rod Stewart on additional vocals and Jeff Beck on guitar.

If the sour taste of Hot Space had affected the band's productivity, they didn't show it. Instead of advancing on the sounds of their previous album, they instead fell back into a system of using whatever works best; as a result, most of the songs hark back to other eras of the band's illustrious history. Tear It Up recalls the crunching beat of We Will Rock You , while Man On The Prowl was written as a latter-day Crazy Little Thing Called Love . Unfortunately, rock songs (the aforementioned Tear It Up , and Hammer To Fall , both tracks, incidentally, written by Brian) took a back seat to more pop-oriented material like Roger's Radio Ga Ga and John's I Want To Break Free , both of which featured extensive arrangement involvement from Freddie. On a lighter note, synthesizers and drum machines were finally integrated successfully into Queen's music; for the purist fans, this was hardly resounding news, but it should be remembered that this was 1984, and that synthesizers and drum machines were the latest trend.

The album was released in February 1984, a mere fortnight after Radio Ga Ga (which reached #2 in the UK and a respectable #16 in the US), going on to peak at #2 in the UK and a disappointing #23 in the US. Subsequent singles all reached the Top Twenty in the band's home country ( I Want To Break Free , #3; It's A Hard Life , #6; and Hammer To Fall , #13; a fourth single, Man On The Prowl , was slated for release in November 1984, but was withdrawn and instead replaced with the seasonal Thank God It's Christmas ), though these same singles performed poorly in the US, reaching #45, #72, and not charting at all, respectively. There are many factors to this: the band had just switched record companies, from Elektra to Capitol , and while initial sales of Radio Ga Ga were promising, a scandal erupted, which Brian explained: "Capitol got themselves into trouble with a dispute that raged in the early 1980s over the alleged corruption of independent record promoters in the US. It was basically the ring of bribery that went on to get records played on US radio. There was a government enquiry into it, and everybody shut down very, very fast. Without going into it too deeply, Capitol got rid of all their 'independent' guys - and the reprisals from the whole network were aimed directly at all the artists who had records out at that time. We had Radio Ga Ga which I think was Top Twenty and rising, but the week after that it disappeared from the charts." This soured relations between band and record company, and the band's Stateside popularity would never recover. At the same time, Freddie's personal manager, Paul Prenter , was doing his part in damaging the band's reputation by being nasty and dismissive toward media outlets who were generally interested in talking to the band, Freddie in particular. (Contrary to popular belief, the video of I Want To Break Free did not damage Queen's reputation in the United States; though there were areas - particularly the deep south - who didn't find the video amusing, the video was well-received in the more populous areas of the coasts.) Consequently, the band refused to tour the United States again, instead focusing their energies on other countries.

The album was remastered and reissued in 1991 on Hollywood Records , with three bonus tracks: the non-album B-side I Go Crazy , and extended remixes of Radio Ga Ga and I Want To Break Free . Further extended remixes of It's A Hard Life , Man On The Prowl , Keep Passing The Open Windows , and Hammer To Fall (dubbed the 'Headbangers mix') were also created, while an instrumental remix of Machines (Or 'Back To Humans') was also created for the US market, specially by Brian. These tracks appeared on the The 12" Collection , in 1991.

The Works by Queen

The decade began strong for the group, with the 1980 release of The Game , which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and would become their best selling album. Later that same year, the group released the soundtrack to the movie Flash Gordon , which further expanded their audience and reach. A worldwide tour followed, which included several concerts with audiences topping 100,000 in Latin American in 1981. That same year, Queen worked with David Bowie on the single “Under Pressure”, a spontaneous occurrence, as Bowie happened to drop by the studio while Queen were recording, and another huge success, reaching number one in the UK. Late in 1981, Queen released their Greatest Hits compilation, which sold over 25 million copies worldwide and is still the best selling album in UK Chart history. However, 1982 turned out to be a disaster, not just with the flop of Hot Space , but with the inner turmoil which began to brew in the band, as guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor were both very critical of the new sound and its apparent abandonment of Queen’s core rock audience. For the first time in a decade, the group took a break from touring and recording, with some band members working on outside projects and solo albums.

After about a year apart, Queen reunited in August 1983 to begin work on this eleventh studio album. They convened in Los Angeles, making this the first time Queen recorded in America, and spent several months working on the album with co-producer and engineer Reinhold Mack . Here the group fused May and Taylor’s rock sound with some of the German-influenced electro pop advocated by vocalist and arranger Freddie Mercury , to fulfill the original mission laid out by Taylor, who stated at the beginning of recording, “Let’s give them the works!”

In what was probably an attempt to show the world that “Queen is back”, most of the songs on the albums first side, seem to harken back to previous famous songs by the band. May’s straight-forward anthem rocker “Tear It Up” contains a consistent beat that seems to slightly rip off the group’s own “We Will Rock You” from the 1977 album News of the World . Mercury’s piano ballad, “It’s a Hard Life” is pleasant and with good sound production, reminiscent of classic Queen of the 1970s, especially during the uplifting guitar lead by May. “Man On the Prowl” is a Jerry Lee Lewis inspired rockabilly track, complete with those famous Queen backing vocals, very similar to those used on the group’s 1979 hit “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”.

“Radio Ga Ga” was the lead single from The Works , as well as its opening track, and immediately feels like a breath of fresh musical air. This brilliant composition which combines a synthesized rhythm with pristine melody, was written by Taylor wholly on a synthesizer, but brilliantly arranged by Mercury, who really shines during the escalating pre-chorus, as the singer transforms the rather silly and trite lyrics into an uplifting and majestic piece. There is very little presence by May on this track, but when he does appear at the very end, he performs a simple slide lead which enhances the track further.

The album’s second side begins “Machines (Or ‘Back to Humans’)”, a really convoluted and disorganized song, which has no real direction and it appears to just throw in the “kitchen sink” of styles and techniques as a kind of extended filler. Deacon’s “I Want to Break Free” is far better than previous track, as it contains good pop craftsmanship, a cool rhythmic riff and a catchy vocal melody, resulting in a pure pop song that is impossible not to enjoy at some level. When Deacon insisted he didn’t want a guitar solo on the track, session man Fred Mandel was commissioned to perform a synth solo. Mercury’s “Keep Passing the Open Windows” starts as a dramatic piano track but, quickly morphs to a bass-driven rock track led by bassist John Deacon , which is fairly entertaining at first, But the trite lyrics grow old as the repetition increases through this five and a half minute track.

“Hammer to Fall” contains a catchy rock riff, catchy melody, and catchy harmonies, adding up to a latter-era Queen classic. Lyrically the song deals with the threat of imminent doom, but musically it feeds into the good-time, call-and-response of eighties pop/rock. This track should have concluded the album on a high note, but instead the group opted for the short acoustic folk ballad “Is This the World We Created?”, a very simple and somber piece by Mercury, which leaves the listener in a low mood as the album concludes. Not a bad piece, but should have been placed before “Hammer to Fall” for maximum effect.

Commercially, The Works did fine as an album, charting in the Top 20 in over a dozen nations worldwide. More importantly, Queen was restored as a top-level, headline act. By 1985, they were again once again playing in front of hundreds of thousands and they performed in front of millions at Live Aid in July of that year. During that festival, the visual of the entire audience at Wembley Stadium clapping in unison to “Radio Ga Ga”, has been cited as one of the greatest live performances of all time.

Australian states vying to host King Charles and Queen Camilla during visit

A solitary home on an outcrop on an island, surrounded by aqua coloured water and another island in the distance.

States and territories are vying to host King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their expected visit in October, as the federal government works with palace officials to put the final touches on the royal couple's itinerary.

Tourism authorities say past royal trips, which have resulted in images of Australian landmarks being beamed around the world, have prompted an influx of bookings and tens of millions in visitor spending.

Offers ranging from luxury tropical island stays, exclusive wildlife encounters, wine tours and opera performances have been put forward by the country's premiers at the request of the federal government.

A circular spa overlooking aqua blue seawater with a tiny island in the distance.

Giselle Bastin, a Flinders University expert on the British royal family, said it was unlikely the royal couple would visit every state and territory due to the king's ongoing treatment for cancer.

"The tours have become much shorter since the 50s," she said, adding that she expected the royal couple would do a six-day tour with about three appearances a day.

"While he's very keen on all the states and territories … it'll be whichever state has put in the best case for why they need to be visited."

Prince Charles and Camilla greet a girl in a pink beanie with two pom poms outside a hospital in Brisbane.

She is also convinced King Charles and Queen Camilla will enjoy the same rock-star reception experienced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018, and Prince William and his wife Catherine four years earlier.

"Even though the Sussexes and the then-Cambridges had enormous media pull because of their youth and celebrity status, I think King Charles comes with that extra fairy dust of kingship," Dr Bastin said.

"The sovereign is a big deal for many Australians still."

So, what's on offer?

State and territory leaders were asked to develop itineraries aligned with two main themes — King Charles's first visit to Australia as sovereign and his interest in climate and sustainability.

Queensland's proposed royal itinerary includes a visit to Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, a trip to the Gold Coast and then north to Cairns, where the king would meet those impacted by January's devastating flooding event in the wake of Cyclone Jasper.

The couple would also travel to Lizard Island, an hour's flight north of the tropical city, where they have been offered the use of a luxury home and cottage — owned by Racing Queensland chairman Steven Wilson.

It is currently advertised at $30,000 a night, but the Queensland government said it would not cover the cost of accommodation.

Queensland's Tourism Minister Michael Healy said the king was no stranger to that part of the world — he holidayed on the picturesque Great Barrier Reef island during an unofficial trip in 1966 when he was aged 17.

"Others states and territories may be in a bidding war but Queensland is the obvious choice as the jewel in the crown of any royal visit," Mr Healy said.

"It also fits with his personal interests in disaster recovery and the climate as our region recovers from the devastating flooding impacts of post-Cyclone Jasper and coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef."

Ms Bastin said it would be "very hard" for the royal household to pass up Queensland.

"It seems to cover all the bases," she said.

"It would suit the king's personal agenda in that it's about the environment, sustainability … and the destruction of the natural environment — that is so much in his interest."

Western Australia's itinerary includes a visit to the WA Museum Boola Bardip, five renovated heritage buildings in the heart of Perth, and a walk along the Matagarup Bridge — a soaring pedestrian bridge.

The royal couple would also visit Rottnest Island, one of the state's most popular tourist destinations, for a Quokka spotting session.

"We have put forward a number of unique experiences for the king and queen to consider which showcase our state's incredible biodiversity, rich history and cultural offerings," a Western Australia government spokeswoman said.

A quokka smiles at the camera, with the ocean in the background.

"The UK is a priority tourism market for WA, with 111,000 visitors from the United Kingdom visiting in the year ending September 2023, injecting around $227 million into the state's economy."

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said a royal visit would not be complete without a trip to Sydney, the most "beautiful city on Earth".

The tour would include a visit to the Opera House, Bondi Beach and Harbour Bridge.

Sydney Opera House lit up at night.

"I don't think you could really come to Australia and convince people back home that you've come to the country without coming to New South Wales, in particular Sydney," Mr Minns said.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said he wanted King Charles to see "what it means to be a Tasmanian".

"Whether it be our cool climate wines, unique heritage, reputation as a renewable energy powerhouse or craftsmanship, we hope to have the opportunity to show King Charles what makes Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family," he said.

Royal visits can generate millions but come at cost to taxpayers

Tourism experts say royal visits often result in a flurry of bookings and enquiries from visitors.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's visit to Australia in 2014 saw stunning photographs of some of Australia's most famed landmarks — including Uluru in the Northern Territory – showcased around the world.

Tourism Australia reported a 125 per cent increase in visitors from Great Britain to its website on the day of the couple's Uluru visit.

Daniel Gschwind from the Griffith Institute for Tourism said it was advertising that money could not buy.

"The king is one of the most famous people on the planet and he draws attention to the places he sees and visits," he said.

"The king will be travelling with hundreds of media representatives and it will certainly draw attention to the many attractions we do have."

The then Prince of Wales smiles in a grey suit as he meets scores of women in Brisbane.

Security and transport is typically paid for by the federal government, states and territories, but the royals pay for their accommodation.

But republicans say the cost of the tour should be footed entirely by the royal family.

Australian Republic Movement chief executive officer Isaac Jeffrey said the cost of royal visits often ran "into the millions".

"This gentleman from the other side of the world lives 17,000km away … He's got a $37 billion property portfolio and he makes hundreds of millions of pounds every year," he said.

"He could pay his own way. Australians are suffering at the moment from a cost-of-living crisis and we don't think that we should be footing the bill for rich international celebrities who only come to visit us every 10 years or so, for a couple of days."

Headshot of Australian Republic Movement's Isaac Jeffrey, he wears a black shirt and blue jacket.

Mr Jeffrey said he would like to see the king and queen venture beyond the capital cities.

"I think it'd be great to see the king and queen of Australia visiting regional Australia," Mr Jeffrey said.

"He could check out some of the big things — the Big Prawn in Ballina or the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour."

The king is yet to formally announce the tour, which would coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Samoa in October.

King Charles scales back his 2024 Australia tour amid fears he’s “doing too much”

Profile picture of Charlotte Knoke

Despite his ongoing cancer battle, King Charles is set to make his first trip to Australia as Monarch in late 2024.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed on March 3, 2024, that the King will be visiting Australia this year.

“The King has shown his compassion for Australians affected by recent natural disasters, just as Australians have shown compassion and support for the King following his cancer diagnosis,” Anthony Albanese said.

“The King, Queen and members of the Royal Family are always welcome in Australia. My Government is engaging with States and Territories on options for a possible Royal visit.”

KING CHARLES TO SCALE BACK AUSTRALIA TOUR

Initially, Charles and Camilla were set to tour Australia as part of a long-haul trip, with visits to neighbouring countries including New Zealand.

However, amid fears that the King is doing too much, their visit to New Zealand has reportedly been scrapped. A source told The Daily Mirror : “Naturally, it will be a bitter disappointment on both sides to not have the opportunity for the King and Queen to visit New Zealand.

“But all are aware of the King’s ongoing health issues and the need for him to pace himself. It’s very much hoped there will be further opportunities in the future.”

Insiders reveal that the Australian leg of the tour will now be reduced to just six days, with Charles and Camilla taking a two-day break before travel to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

PLANNING HAS YET TO BE FINALISED

Buckingham Palace has yet to formally announce the visit as the travel plans are apparently still in the early stages. However, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed Charles and Camilla’s expected attendance.

Charles and Camilla last visited Australia in 2018.

A government spokesman told The Australian newspaper that “the Prime Minister enjoys a warm relationship with the King and looks forward to welcoming His Majesty to Australia later this year”.

In a new book based on King Charles, the author, Robert Hardman explained that he believes the King has a loving relationship with Australia after he spent time here during his schooldays.

HIS FIRST VISIT SINCE BECOMING KING

King Charles’ visit to Australia will be his first since becoming King, and will be the first visit to Australia by a ruling British monarch since Elizabeth II visited in October 2011.

The royal tour will coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, at which both Charles and Camilla are expected to attend.

Taking place in October, the CHOGM occurs every two years and features leaders from the 56 Commonwealth member nations.

The late Queen Elizabeth’s final visit to Australia was in 2011.

The last time the British royals visited Australia was in April 2018, when they represented Queen Elizabeth at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, and opened the ceremony.

The late Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia 16 times over the course of her reign, each time accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip who sadly passed away April 2021. Her first visit to Australia as Monarch was in 1954, with her final trip being in October 2011.

It is a significant event for King Charles as it marks his first royal tour of Australia since becoming the reigning monarch, and will be the first time for the Australian people to see their new King.

Anthony Albanese and King Charles last met in May 2023 at Buckingham Palace.

Since becoming King and Queen, Charles and Camilla have completed state visits to Germany, France and Kenya, and have hosted leaders from around the world.

In May 2023, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with King Charles at Buckingham Palace ahead of the King’s coronation.

Tonight Biden and Trump will have their first debate of 2024. Here’s what you need to know

Biden and Trump will debate on Thursday. Here’s what you need to know

Right: Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign event at 180 Church, Saturday, June 15, 2024, in Detroit.

President Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off in the first presidential debate of the 2024 general election tonight in Atlanta .

It begins a new phase of the presidential race, less than five months out from Nov. 5, Election Day, as the matchup remains extremely tight. Biden and Trump stand virtually tied, according to the latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll , which echoes a months-long trend of recent national surveys.

The debate also breaks with campaign tradition, occurring months earlier than usual and with a new set of rules both candidates have agreed to, including no live audience. It’s also the first debate either candidate has participated in this campaign season. Biden largely ran unopposed, and Trump notably skipped the GOP primary debates.

Former President Donald Trump and now-President Biden, as seen on television during the Oct. 22, 2020 presidential debate. Their first debate this year airs on Thursday on CNN.

How Biden is getting ready for his high-stakes debate with Trump

Here’s what you need to know about this first debate.

When and how to watch

The event starts at 9 p.m. ET and will run for 90 minutes. It will be moderated by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash and take place at the network’s studios in Atlanta.

The debate will be available on CNN and the streaming platform Max, formerly known as HBO. Viewers without a cable login can watch on CNN’s website .

NPR will be providing live on-air special coverage of the CNN Presidential Debate Simulcast. Plus, you can follow NPR’s live blog for updates and analysis during the debate.

Who will be there?

Biden and Trump are the only presidential candidates who qualified for the debate stage.

Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to meet the threshold , which required candidates to poll at 15% or higher in four national surveys and appear on enough state ballots that could theoretically push them past the needed 270 Electoral College votes to secure the presidency.

How is this debate different from those in the past?

Typically, presidential debates occur in front of a live audience, often in an event space on a college or university campus, and are coordinated by the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD).

At the presidential debate on Sept. 29, 2020, in Cleveland, then-President Donald Trump stands on the left side of the stage, and then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden stands on the right side. Debate moderator Chris Wallace, then with Fox News, is seated in front of the stage, facing the two candidates.

As Trump takes to the debate stage Thursday, his signature style may be muted

But not this year. Both candidates have said they will not participate in the CPD’s previously scheduled and announced debates, lobbying for earlier matchups .

Instead, Biden and Trump will take part in tonight’s debate on CNN and then a second in September hosted by ABC News.

Biden and Trump have agreed to the following rules :

  • Microphones will be muted unless a candidate is directed to speak.
  • Candidates are not allowed to bring prewritten notes or props. They will receive a pen and paper, as well as a bottle of water.
  • A coin toss determined podium positions and the order of closing statements. According to CNN, Biden’s campaign won the coin toss and chose the podium to the viewers' right. As a result, the Trump team chose to deliver the final closing statement of the evening.

What to watch for

Candidates will likely speak to recent respective legal dramas. The debate comes about a month after Trump was found guilty of 34 criminal charges in New York, becoming the first U.S. president in history to be convicted of felony crimes. Biden’s son, Hunter, who is not running for office, was convicted on felony gun charges in Delaware in mid-June and faces a second federal trial in September over failing to pay his taxes.

Biden will also likely address concerns over his age and ability to serve a second term. At 81, he is the oldest sitting president in U.S. history, and if elected for a second term, he would exit office at 86.

While the president has had public slipups throughout his first term, Trump, who is 78, has repeatedly criticized Biden’s mental ability , most recently speculating he should take a cognitive test. In that same speech, Trump incorrectly named the doctor who conducted his own cognitive exam while president.

On the issues, it’s expected the candidates will discuss the state of the economy and immigration policy, as both are consistently top issues for voters in national polling. It’s also possible the candidates will weigh in on international politics, given voters remain divided on whether the U.S. should be sending military aid to Ukraine and Israel in their respective wars.

The debate may also be an opportunity for Biden to address his decreasing support, when compared to 2020, among key parts of his base, notably Blacks and Latinos and young voters .

Trump is losing some ground among older voters, and the Biden campaign is trying to capitalize on that . Plus, the former president may still need to repair relations with Nikki Haley supporters who remain uncertain about backing him again.

What's next?

Trump will likely announce his pick for vice president in the coming weeks. There will also be a vice presidential debate this summer. The date has not been finalized, but Vice President Harris agreed to one held on either July 23 or Aug. 13.

On the legal front, Trump will appear for sentencing in his criminal trial on July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention, which begins on July 15 in Milwaukee. A month later, the Democratic National Convention will kick off on Aug. 19 in Chicago.

Trump and Biden will debate for a second time on Sept. 10.

Tour de France 2024 preview: Full schedule, teams and how to watch live

Jonas Vingegaard bids for a third consecutive victory in the Tour de France

The Tour de France 2024 is almost upon us with the world’s most prestigious cycling race getting underway on Saturday 29 June.

All eyes are on the duel between Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark. The pair have won the last four titles between them with each aiming to win a third Tour de France.

After his emphatic victory in the Giro d'Italia, Pogačar goes into the event as favourite to add to his two wins from 2020 and 2021. It could be an incredible few weeks for the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist with the Tour de France ended just days before the Olympic Games Paris 2024 .

Meanwhile, Vingegaard has made a late comeback from injury to be fit for the Tour as he seeks to become the sixth rider - and the first Scandinavian - to win three consecutive yellow jerseys.

This year’s race is unique for a number of reasons. It will be the first edition to begin in Italy , marking 100 years since Ottavio Bottecchia became the first Italian winner of the Tour de France.

The 'Grand Départ' is in Florence with the field traversing the Italian Alps before crossing the border into France during Stage 4. This will also be the first Tour to finish outside of Paris - due to its proximity to the Olympic Games - with the final stage an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice which will decide overall victory.

Here is everything you need to know about this year’s Tour de France.

Riders to watch at the Tour de France 2024

As well as the big two - Pogačar and Vingegaard - other challengers for the yellow jersey include Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič .

Evenepoel has played down his chances of general classification success on his Tour debut, but his pedigree suggests he will be a threat. The Belgian has some impressive results to his name including winning the 2022 road race world title, and GC at the 2022 Vuelta a España in 2022. He also boasts two Liège-Bastogne-Liège victories.

Roglič, the 2020 runner-up behind compatriot Pogačar, will take some confidence from his overall victory at the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Jasper Philipsen is the favourite to retain the sprinters' green jersey after winning Milan-San Remo and finishing second at Paris-Roubaix. Denmark's Mads Pedersen , road race world champion five years ago, is among his main challengers while Mark Cavendish needs just one stage win to break his tie with Eddy Merckx (both on 34) for the most stage victrories in race history.

Old cyclocross rivals Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert will also be in the mix for stage wins. The latter is back as one of Vingegaard's chief lieutenants in the Visma Lease a Bike team after sustaining multiple fractures in a crash at March's Dwars door Vlaanderen.

The 2024 Tour features seven mountain stages, including four summit finishes, and will suit the climbers. Pogačar (2020, 2021) and Vingegaard (2022) are past winners of the King of the Mountains' polka-dot jersey and are likely contenders once more.

Tour de France 2024 route and important stages

Also among the 21 stages of the 2024 Tour de France are two individual time trials and gravel sectors covering a total distance of 3,492km.

Starting from Florence, the 2024 Tour will complete three full stages in Italy traversing the Italian Alps before crossing the border into France from Pinerolo.

With no Alpe d'Huez or Mont Ventoux on this year's route, the Queen stage is the penultimate stage - a testing 132km cycle from Nice to the summit of the Col de la Couillole .

In recent years, the final individual time trial has been held on the penultimate day with the finale a procession on the Champs-Elysées on the Sunday. But, due to preparations for Paris 2024, this year's race will conclude with a 33.7km time trial from Monaco to Nice.

That means the yellow jersey could potentially be decided on the final day. The last time the Tour ended with a time trial was in 1989 when Greg Lemond overturned a 50-second deficit to Laurent Fignon to take victory by just eight seconds, still the smallest winning margin in race history.

Day-by-day route of the 2024 Tour de France
