Solomon Burke sang country-influenced soul in a booming voice that resonated in the depths of your soul. Burke’s voice is gritty, ardent—the voice of a man who has lived and seen it all.

HALL OF FAME ESSAY

By John Swenson

Solomon Burke is one of the transcendent figures of Twentieth-Century American culture.

A child prodigy as a gospel singer, Burke was nicknamed “the Wonder Boy Preacher,” and by the time he was twelve, he had founded his own ministry, Solomon’s Temple, in his hometown of Philadelphia.

After signing with Atlantic in 1960, he became a key player in the birth of soul music, recording such hits as “Just Out of Reach (of My Two Open Arms),” “Cry to Me,” “If You Need Me” and “Got to Get You Off My Mind.”

The group played nearly 120 shows, mostly arenas and stadiums, on that tour.

The new live set - which will be released on March 8 - will be available in DVD and two-CD, Blu-ray and two-CD, double CD and three-LP formats.  The Rolling Stones Live at the Wiltern  arrives five months after the release of Hackney Diamonds , the group's first album of original material in 18 years.

Solomon Burke

Solomon Burke was a legendary singer who never received the commercial success that his immense talent warranted. But he is generally recognized within the music industry as one of the most important soul singers ever.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1940, Burke began his adult life as a preacher in Philadelphia, and soon moved on to hosting a gospel radio show. He met fellow preacher Martin Luther King, Jr. several times.

In the 1960s, he signed with Atlantic Records and began moving towards more secular music. His first hit was "Just Out Of Reach (Of My Two Open Arms)", a cover of a country song. Though well-received by both peers and critics, and attaining a few moderate pop and several major R&B hits, Burke never could quite break through into the mainstream as did Sam Cooke or Otis Redding, who covered Burke's "Down in the Valley" for 1965's Otis Blue. His best known song is "Cry to Me",which was a hit twice first in the 60's and again in the 1980s- used in the dance and seduction scene in the film Dirty Dancing . It hit again off of that popular film's soundtrack.

In 1964 he wrote and recorded "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love", Burke's most prominent bid for an enduring soul standard. Almost immediately covered by The Rolling Stones the same year, other well-known versions include one by Wilson Pickett and another, a decade and a half later, in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers .

Burke enjoyed a special relationship with the Catholic Church throughout his life and in 2000, he and his family were invited to perform at the Jubilee of the Family at the Vatican. Since then, he has been invited back to the Vatican by both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI for Vatican's Christmas celebration.

In 1987, he appeared in the movie The Big Easy as Daddy Mention and he is featured in the 2004 movie Lightning in a Bottle , singing "Turn on Your Love Light" and "Down in the Valley". Also in 2004, Solomon appeared on Junkie XL's album, Radio JXL: A Broadcast From the Computer Hell Cabin, performing "Catch Up To My Step". Also in 2004 he was featured on the song "I Pray On Christmas" from the Blind Boys Of Alabama album Go Tell It On The Mountain , which won a Grammy for Best Traditional Gospel Album.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.His career was to some degree revived in 2002, with the release of Don't Give Up On Me on Fat Possum Records and produced by Joe Henry, where he sang songs written specifically for the album by various top-rank artists, including Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits. Don't Give Up On Me won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 45th Grammy Awards in 2003.

In 2005, he appeared as a special guest with Jools Holland on his autumn tour of the United Kingdom, including two sell-out shows at London's Royal Albert Hall.

In September 2006, Burke returned to his country roots with the release of a 14-track country album titled Nashville , produced by Buddy Miller. It included guest vocals from Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch and Patty Loveless. The sessions produced the first recording Griffin's "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)", which she brought to Burke because of his association with King and that era. The album peaked at #55 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.

On September 28, 2006, Burke was among the several rock, soul, and country legends that sang along with Jerry Lee Lewis at the live concert "Last Man Standing" at the Sony Music Studio in New York. The two duets were "Who Will the Next Fool Be" and "Today I Started Lovin' You Again".

In January 2008, Solomon went back to the recording studio to record with the producer/drummer Steve Jordan. The album titled Like a Fire has songs written specifically for Burke by Ben Harper, Eric Clapton, Jesse Harris, Keb' Mo', Meegan Voss and Steve Jordan and was released on June 10, 2008. This album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album of 2008.

In January 2009, Burke joined legendary record producer Willie Mitchell at Mitchell's Royal Studio in Memphis to work together on a new recording - an album titled Nothing's Impossible which was released on April 6, 2010. It was the first time Burke and Mitchell had worked together in their careers. Burke also put on his record label hat when his label, The One Entertainment Systems signed Clarence Fountain and Sam Butler and their most recent project: Stepping Up And Stepping Out . It is Clarence Fountain's first project since stepping away from The Blind Boys of Alabama.

The King of Rock 'N' Soul celebrated his 70th birthday in March 2010 and toured Japan for the first time in May 2010, before his "Year of the Dream Love Tour" across Europe in July and August 2010, including dates in Spain, Italy, England, Germany, Norway, Belgium, Serbia, Bulgaria and Switzerland.

In October 2010 his final album Hold On Tight was due to be released. It contained 13 songs written by Dutch rockband De Dijk translated to English to be performed by Burke. Sadly, Burke died on October 10th of that year while visiting the Netherlands. Parts of this article are licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License . The Rolling Stones Prep Release of Live At The Wiltern

The rarities-packed 2002 show will be available in multiple formats on March 8th

solomon burke tour

The Rolling Stones have announced the latest title in their ongoing live archive series with Live At The Wiltern, scheduled for release on March 8, 2024 via Mercury Studios.

The concert, cut before an intimate crowd in the famed Los Angeles venue The Wiltern Theatre on November 4, 2002, was part of the band’s Licks World Tour in support of their then-new compilation Forty Licks, released in honor of their 40th anniversary at the time. And as a respite from performing their biggest hits in stadiums and sports arenas across the world, the Stones chose to treat the lucky 2000+ fans inside the Wiltern to a show packed with some of their deepest nuggets.

Of course, the group could never get away with eschewing the war horses, so the likes of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Start Me Up” and “Tumbling Dice” anchored the set on this night. But coloring the gig was a cache of cuts the Stones rarely play in concert, unearthing gems like Tattoo You’s “Neighbours,” “Stray Cat Blues” from Beggars Banquet and the Keith Richards-sung Voodoo Lounge highlight “Thru And Thru” among others.

“We couldn’t really go through a whole tour doing predictable shows,” guitarist Ron Wood told writer Paul Sexton for Live At The Wiltern’s extensive liner notes. “We’ve got to have songs out of the blue.”

“It makes it interesting for the audience and the band,” adds singer Mick Jagger. “I’ve got to think a lot more about setlists than I’ve ever done.”

Enthuses Keith Richards: “Sometimes on the road, the weather’s bad and half the band’s down with something, but apart from those obvious blue days, there’s an amazing freshness about these guys.”

solomon burke tour

This extended lineup of the band on this night is a further testament to this particular period in their career. So in addition to Jagger, Woods, Richards and the late, great Charlie Watts on drums, they are joined by A-List musicians bassist Darryl Jones, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, saxophonist Bobby Keys and backing vocalists Lisa Fischer, Bernard Fowler and Blondie Chaplin. Soul legend Solomon Burke, meanwhile, makes a special appearance on an uplifting version of the 1964 soul classic “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love,” co-written by Burke alongside Bert Berns and Jerry Wexler.

With Tom Petty, Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, Johnny Depp, Stephen Stills and Eddie Murphy in the audience, The Rolling Stones delivered one of the most electrifying shows of their long career .

The Rolling Stones Live At The Wiltern will be available on the following formats: DVD + 2CD; Blu-Ray + 2CD, 2CD, 3LP (3 variants: Black, Gold (D2C Exclusive), and Black & Bronze Swirl (Amazon Exclusive).

The Stones are prepping a new North American tour in support of their latest studio album, Hackney Diamonds, which kicks off on April 28 in Houston, TX and wrapping up on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

Solomon Burke Concert Poster 1960s Soul Music Pioneer, R&R Hall of Famer

A really outstanding mid-’60s Solomon Burke window card with ten hitmakers on it, headlined by Burke, Jerry Butler, The Drifters and Chuck Jackson.

This five-color beauty consists of bright pink and yellow inks, run alongside the standard black & white colors plus red venue info typed in above. So in all, five different colors combine to give this its dazzling effect.

Credit Posters Inc. out of Philadelphia for creating this beautiful Solomon Burke show poster. It was printed on rigid card stock, and measures the standard jumbo size of 22 x 28 inches.

In fact, Posters Inc. printed their credit way down at the bottom in pink ink! It really looks cool, classy and different.

The Mosque in Richmond, Virginia was the home to this particular Solomon Burke tour poster. That’s stated in big red letters at the top.

“Sat., Sept. 12,” it then says, with 1964 not needing to be mentioned. Ticket prices are then given as “$1.50 – $2.00 – $2.50,” with cute little pointing hands on either side. Five locations to buy them are then rattled off.

The condition of this Solomon Burke broadside is simply amazing. It was definitely never used to sell tickets; it has no tape residue, thumbtack holes, creases, fading or trimming. It’s a really gem example.

I’ve always stated in my blogs that it’s OK, it’s perfectly fine, for an old poster to look old and used… it can add to its charm. But then once in a while a mint copy like this shows up, and really makes me re-think my position.

“Supersonic Attractions Presents” are the first words at the top of the permanent portion of this Solomon Burke window poster. They were a very active national tour promoter back in the day.

In fact, their name frequently appeared at the top of Globe Posters printed in Baltimore, MD, but on occasion they’d order their posters to be designed and printed by Posters Inc., like this one.

“Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” is the most prominent song found on this Solomon Burke concert placard. It wasn’t much of a hit for Mr. Burke, but boy was it an important song.

It was subsequently covered by The Rolling Stones and Wilson Pickett, and performed live by Led Zeppelin as part of their long medleys. It’s a song with true staying power, and has been performed endlessly over the ensuing decades.

Then Jerry Butler occupies the other top space on this Solomon Burke appearance poster. “I Stand Accused” was, unfortunately, not much of a hit for him.

However, his very next single, “Let It Be Me,” would break through nicely into the Top 5 of Billboard ’s pop singles chart – and was a duet with Betty Everett, who is down in the bottom row.

The Drifters appear to be rejoicing on this Solomon Burke telephone-pole poster, and rightfully so: their “Under the Boardwalk” was a huge Top 5 pop hit for them this year.

Fortunately, that’s the song chosen to be listed above their photo, so it’s a great Drifters’ presence that’s felt on this concert poster. “Boardwalk” would be, by the way, their last major hit.

Then Chuck Jackson grabs the fourth spot on this Solomon Burke tour placard. His song title given is “Beg Me,” but that one didn’t do much. He remained best known for his hit “Any Day Now” two years prior.

Those four sort of stand alone above the yellow diamond which says “All In Person.” Below that, the other half-dozen second-tier musicians are listed.

Even if you don’t love any of the other musicians, this is one heckuva piece of Solomon Burke concert memorabilia. I think it’s about the nicest concert poster of his I’ve ever seen.

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a Burke stand-alone poster – with him as the only act. He was almost always part of a package tour like this.

This Solomon Burke street poster is happily discussed and shown to you today by Pete Howard, former ICE magazine publisher and long-time music fan and historian. I can be contacted through [email protected] or via the (805) 540.0020 phone number. In doing so, please keep in mind that I pay the very best & highest prices in this hobby, bar none, for not only any old Solomon Burke concert announcement like this, but any & all vintage soul music and R&B concert posters.

If you’d like to see a few more dazzlers from the ’60s, almost all soul-music multi-act concert window cards, then just slide your mouse over one space to this page: http://www.postercentral.com/multi-act_1960s.htm

Rolling Stones 2024 Tour Dates Announced

' src=

The Rolling Stones have been on… a roll.  On October 23, 2023, they released Hackney Diamonds .  And even better: the Rolling Stones 2024 tour announcement has been released:  16 cities in the U.S.A. and Canada. Scroll down to see if you can “spend the night together” in a city near you or read on for a short analysis of why the places were chosen.

Why Isn’t The Rolling Stones 2024 Tour Hitting The Same Cities as 2021?

The 2024 tour dates (as compared to 2021) are mostly new locations with a handful of exceptions. It’s the smart move whether we like it or not.  Hitting “new” venues gives them a chance to take the show to new places… places they didn’t hit last tour. This is always good for ticket sales. Plus, you know Mick loves to tour the U.S. and check out cities on the down low .

The locations that The Rolling Stones 2024 tour will revisit are Vegas, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.  The previous tour notably missed New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia. I would look for possible second shows to be added to NYC, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

The Rolling Stones are offering presale tickets (you need a code) through rollingstones.com . If you get your code before Tuesday, November 28th, 2023, you can purchase tickets between Wednesday, November 29th at noon and 10pm Thursday, November 30th.  Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, December 1st at 10am.

Ticket Prices: You May Want To Start Saving Now

Tickets are not cheap.  Honestly, I can’t blame them for charging a lot.  They’re The Rolling Stones.  That band has spent six decades on stage.  They put on an amazing show.  You know every song.  I have tremendous respect for The Stones’ ability to consistently put on kick-ass rock shows for sixty years now.  They are prepared, professional, and 100% comfortable on stage.  I will travel for that kind of show, my friend… and I will pay.

The Rolling Stones 2024 Tour Dates

  • April 28th – Houston, TX – NRG Stadium
  • May 2nd    – New Orleans, LA – Jazz Fest

Can’t get enough Rolling Stones live?  Check this out:

Rolling Stones: Their 18 Best Live Albums, Ranked

Today, the Rolling Stones release another live album:  Licked Live In NYC , recorded at New York’s Madison Square Garden in January of 2003, while on their 40th-anniversary tour. It comes less than a month after  Live At El Mocambo , a live recording of a surprise set that the band did at the 300-capacity club El Mocambo in Montreal in March of 1977; calling themselves “The Cockroaches,” they were actually opening for April Wine!

There’s been something of a deluge of Rolling Stones live recordings available in the past few decades: some released by ABKCO Records (who owns most of their catalog from the ’60s), Universal Music (who distributes everything on Rolling Stones Records, the lalel the band set up for themselves and has put out their music since 1971’s  Sticky Fingers.  And finally, Mercury Studios, formerly known as Eagle Rock Entertainment, licenses live recordings and other special products from the band.

So we listened to a  lot  of live Stones music to share with you our favorite commercially available concert recordings. Of course, there’s nothing like the real thing, so yeah, we’re hoping that the Stones return to the U.S. this year or next to play more shows.

18. ‘The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus’

Recorded : December 11-12, 1968 Released : 1996 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts STANDOUT TRACKS : Welllllll…. There are some great moments, but the best ones aren’t from the Rolling Stones. The Stones curated this event, yet the easy highlight was the Who’s performance of “A Quick One, While He’s Away,” as well as John Lennon’s “Yer Blues,” featuring Yoko, Eric Clapton on guitar, Keith Richards on bass and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience on drums. As for the Stones, “Jumping Jack Flash” and “Sympathy For The Devil” are great, but this was the end of their era with Brian Jones, and if you watch the film, you can see why.

17. ‘Bridges To Buenos Aires’

Recorded : April 5, 1998 Released : 2019 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts with Darryl Jones (bass, backing vocals), Chuck Leavell (keyboards, backing vocals), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Andy Snitzer (saxophone, keyboards), Kent Smith (trumpet), Michael Davis (trombone), Bernard Fowler (backing vocals), Lisa Fischer (backing vocals), Blondie Chaplin (backing vocals) and, Leah Wood (backing vocals on “Thief In The Night”) and special guest Bob Dylan. STANDOUT TRACKS : “Like A Rolling Stone” with Bob Dylan, “Sister Morphine” It’s fun hearing Mick Jagger (the consummate showman) and Bob Dylan (who doesn’t care about showmanship at all) meet in the middle for a stadium-sized version of Dylan’s revolutionary 1965 classic. And druggy ballad “Sister Morphine” (from ‘Sticky Fingers’) was a daring touch.

16. ‘Licked Live In NYC’

Recorded : January 2003 Released : 2022 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts with Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Andy Snitzer (saxophone), Kent Smith (trumpet), Michael Davis (trombone), Bernard Fowler (vocals), Lisa Fischer (vocals), Blondie Chaplin (vocals) with special guest Sheryl Crow STANDOUT TRACKS : “Thu and Thu,” “If You Can’t Rock Me,” “Monkey Man,” “Let It Bleed,” “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” “Honky Tonk Woman” This writer was at this show, which was a blast. The album doesn’t have too many live tracks or surprise guests, but Stones fan Sheryl Crow geeking out about singing onstage with her idols was worth the price of admission.

15. ‘Havana Moon’

Recorded : March 25, 2016 Released : 2016 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts with Darryl Jones (bass, backing vocals), Chuck Leavell (keyboards, backing vocals), Bernard Fowler (backing vocals, percussion), Matt Clifford (keyboards, French horn), Tim Ries (saxophone, keyboards), Karl Denson (saxophone), Sasha Allen (backing vocals) STANDOUT TRACKS: “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “it’s Only Rock N Roll (But I Like It),” “All Down The Line” In 2016, there weren’t too many places that the Stones hadn’t played, but Cuba was one of them. This show has a specific vibe: they were playing a free concert for an estimated 500,000 fans… and you can assume that most of them had never been to a Rolling Stones concert, or even any large scale concert, in their lives. So while *you* might have been tired of seeing the classics over and over, this audience surely was not.

14. ‘Steel Wheels: Live Atlantic City, New Jersey’

Recorded : December 19, 1989 Released : 2020 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts with Matt Clifford (keyboards, French horn), Chuck Leavell (keyboards, backing vocals), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Arno Hecht (saxophone), Paul Litteral (trumpet), Bob Funk (trombone), Crispen Cloe (saxophone) , Bernard Fowler (backing vocals), Lisa Fischer (backing vocals) and Cindy Mizelle (backing vocals) with special guests W. Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin’, Eric Clapton and John Lee Hooker STANDOUT TRACKS : “Salt Of The Earth” with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin’, “Sad Sad Sad,” “Mixed Emotions,” “Undercover of the Night,” “Boogie Chillen” with John Lee Hooker and Eric Clapton By 1989, the Rolling Stones had lost their sense of danger, and fair enough: they had been around for 25 years. But having Axl and Izzy join them, at the peak of Guns N Roses’ popularity, was a reminder of what a dangerous band they’d once been; it was a great moment to see members of both bands jamming together. Meanwhile, the Stones seemed to enjoy playing multiple radio hits– “Sad Sad Sad,” “Rock In A Hard Place,” and “Mixed Emotions,” the last time a new Stones album enjoyed that kind of popularity.

13. ‘Hyde Park Live’

Recorded : July 6 and 13, 2013 Released : 2013 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts with Darryl Jones (bass, backing vocals), Chuck Leavell (keyboards, backing vocals, cowbell on "Honky Tonk Women"), Bernard Fowler (backing vocals, percussion), Lisa Fischer (backing vocals, percussion), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Tim Ries (saxophone, keyboards), Matt Clifford (French horn on "You Can't Always Get What You Want"), Voce Chamber Choir (choir on "You Can't Always Get What You Want") and London Youth Choir (choir on "You Can't Always Get What You Want") and Mick Taylor (guitar on “Midnight Rambler” and “Satisfaction”) STANDOUT TRACKS : “Gloom and Doom,” “Gimme Shelter, “Midnight Rambler” The show had a vibe: 44 years after the Stones played two concerts at Hyde Park (two days after the death of Brian Jones), they returned with a somewhat bigger production. Those shows were Mick Taylor’s first gig with the band, and he joins them at ‘Hyde Park Live’ on “Midnight Rambler.”

12. ‘Hampton Coliseum (Live 1981)’

Recorded : December 19, 1981 Released : 2012 (through Google Play)// 2014 (as part of a CD/Bluray collection) Lineup: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts with Ian Stewart (piano), Ian McLagan (keyboards, backing vocals), Ernie Watts (saxophone), Bobby Keys (tenor saxophone on "Let it Bleed", "Brown Sugar", "Tumbling Dice" and "Honky Tonk Woman") STANDOUT TRACKS : “Just My Imagination,” the audience singing “Happy Birthday” to Keith as he launches into “Little T&A,” “She’s So Cold,” “Hang Fire” and “Start Me Up” Nearly 20 years into their career, the Stones were touring on yet another hit album, ‘Tattoo You,’ and had lost none of their swagger, even as their business team was turning arena tours into a multi-million dollar business. Of course, Keith probably would have played for nothing.

11. ‘No Security’

Recorded : 1997-1998 Released ; 1998 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts with Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Pierre de Beauport (electric piano on “Thief in the Night”), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Andy Snitzer (saxophone, keyboards), Kent Smith (trumpet), Michael Davis (trombone), Bernard Fowler (vocals), Lisa Fischer (vocals), Blondie Chaplin (vocals), Leah Wood (backing vocals on “Thief in the Night”), Johnny Starbuck (shaker on “Out Of Control”) and special guests Dave Matthews, Taj Majal and Joshua Redman STANDOUT TRACKS : “Memory Motel” with Dave Matthews, “Out Of Control,” “Saint Of Me,” “Thief In The Night” By the late ‘90s, the Rolling Stones didn’t need to make great albums: their albums were basically the centerpieces for a huge marketing campaigns that were really about massive tours. But their new album, ‘Bridges To Babylon,’ had two classic stadium jams: “Out Of Control” and “Saint Of Me.” Another new song, the Keith-sung “Thief In The Night,” is an intimate jam, which still sounded great in huge venues. And one of the few Mick-Keith duets, “Memory Motel,” becomes a trio with special guest Dave Matthews (at the height of his popularity) and it never feels overstuffed.

10. ‘Got Live If You Want It!’

Recorded : various dates in 1966 Released : 1966 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts with Ian Stewart (piano) STANDOUT TRACKS : “Under My Thumb,” “Get Off Of My Cloud,” “Not Fade Away,” “Fortune Teller” This isn’t the most well-recorded performance, but the energy makes up for it. “Under My Thumb,” is a particular highlight - it sounds a lot tougher, stripped of the marimba and its studio arrangements.

9. ‘Live Licks’

Recorded 2002-2003 Released 2004 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts with Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Andy Snitzer (saxophone), Kent Smith (trumpet), Michael Davis (trombone), Bernard Fowler (vocals), Lisa Fischer (vocals), Blondie Chaplin (vocals) with special guests Sheryl Crow and Solomon Burke STANDOUT TRACKS : Really, all of disc two: the rarely played gems (disc one is new live versions of often-played classics). But the ten-minute “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’,” “That’s How Strong My Love Is,” “The Nearness Of You,” “Worried About You,” and “Gimme Shelter” are all amazing. When the Stones began touring again in 1989, they were promoting ‘Steel Wheels.’ The next two tours supported albums as well: ‘Voodoo Lounge’ and ‘Bridges To Babylon.’ But the 2002-2003 tour was mostly a look back; it celebrated the band’s 40th anniversary. They were still one of the most popular touring acts in the world (and still are, 20 years later). They were just having a blast playing … and, to be sure, making millions. The aforementioned deep tracks here are amazing, especially “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’,” where they teach all of the jam bands how to keep things exciting even when a song lasts ten minutes.

8. ‘Shine A Light’

Recorded : October 29 and November 1, 2006 Released : 2008 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts with Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Kent Smith (trumpet), Michael Davis (trombone), Bernard Fowler (vocals), Lisa Fischer (vocals), Blondie Chaplin (vocals) and special guests Buddy Guy, Christina Aguilera and Jack White STANDOUT TRACKS : “Loving Cup” with Jack White, Muddy Waters’ “Champagne and Reefer” with Buddy Guy, “Live With Me” with Christina Aguilera, “Tumbling Dice.” The Stones often try to beef up their live albums with guest appearances; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. On this live album/video, it worked really well. Jack White was something of an heir apparent to the Stones’ blues rock throne in the 2000s, and in very Jack White fashion, he dusted off a deep cut. Aguilera, meanwhile, showed that she’s a powerful vocalist – and performer - and that unlike many of her peers, she could bring it to the stage and go toe-to-toe with Mick Jagger. “Champagne and Reefer” was a furious blues jam; Buddy is one of the few guests that the Stones geek out over playing with (the geeking out is usually the other way around). And there’s a beautiful moment at the end of the song where Keith Richards gives Buddy his guitar, saying, “It’s yours.”

7. ‘On Air (Deluxe)’

Recorded : various BBC sessions between 1963-1965 Released : 2017 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts with Ian Stewart STANDOUT TRACKS : Chuck Berry covers “Come On” and “Memphis, Tennessee,” “Cops and Robbers,” “Hi Heeled Sneakers,” “I Wanna Be Your Man” The Rolling Stones have been around for so long - six decades! So, it’s hard to imagine them as a young group… and, indeed, when they were young men, the very idea of a “rock group” was almost a novelty. So, it’s fun to listen to these BBC recordings from back when they were just starting out. For the 1963 recordings, they had been together for just about a year. They’re not the most polished (or well-recorded) performances, but they’re a lot of fun.

6. ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones!”

RECORDED : 1972 RELEASED : as a film in 1974; as a live album in 2017 LINEUP : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts with Nicky Hopkins (piano), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Jim Price (trumpet) and Ian Stewart (piano) STANDOUT TRACKS : “Bitch,” “Love In Vain,” “All Down The Line,” “Rocks Off” This is the band at peak swagger, as they’re touring to promote their classic ‘Exile On Main Street’ album. They had released a masterpiece… and they knew it.

5. ‘Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!’

RECORDED : November 1969 RELEASED : 1970 LINEUP : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts with Ian Stewart (piano) STANDOUT TRACKS : “Mightnight Rambler,” their cover of Robert Johnson’s “Love In Vain” Most live albums have a little bit of studio “nipping and tucking” going on, polishing off the rough edges of the performances they are documenting. ‘Get Your Ya-Ya’s Out!’ had a bit too much: Mick Jagger recorded overdubs on nearly every song. Except, thankfully, “Midnight Rambler,” and this version of that song is the definitive one. For that reason alone, we rank ‘Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out’ very highly. “Love In Vain” also doesn’t have the overdubs, and it’s also excellent if less epic than “Midnight Rambler.” And if you’re going to spring for a copy of this album, though, splurge a bit and get the box set: it includes opening acts: B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner.

4. ‘El Mocambo 1977’

Recorded : March 4 and 5 1977 Released: 2021 Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts with Ollie Brown (percussion), Ian Stewart (piano) and Billy Preston (keyboards and vocals) Standout Tracks : “Hand of Fate,” “Mannish Boy,” “Crackin’ Up,” “Around and Around” Some of the songs on this album were previously released on the not-at-all-essential live album, ‘Love You Live,’ which was mostly performances from their stadium concerts. The El Mocambo songs were great, but they featured studio overdubs. On this new live release, it’s essentially a full show, culled from two “secret” gigs at the 300-capacity El Mocambo in Toronto, under the guise of ‘The Cockroaches,’ playing on the bill with Canadian band April Wine. Unknowing radio contest winners were likely stunned to find out who the Cockroches actually were!. The Stones, meanwhile, were in uncharted territory: more than a decade into their career, they were still together and still relevant. While they played a few ‘60s favorites, they drew a lot of their set from their new albums, ‘It’s Only Rock and Roll’ and ‘Black and Blue.’

3. ‘Live 1965: Charlie Is My Darling’

Recorded : 1965 Released : 2012 as part of the super-deluxe version of the ‘Charlie Is My Darling’ filim//2014 as a digital release Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts Standout Tracks : “Off The Hook,” the album-closing version of Solomon Burke’s “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” and a 30 second bit where Charlie Watts introduces “Little Red Rooster” (“Little Red Rooster” itself is also pretty great, and it’s wild to hear a screaming teenage audience going crazy for a Willie Dixon blues classic). The fidelity on these live recordings isn’t perfect, but it captures the band when they were about three years old playing to an audience that is losing its mind for the group. Not only were they a new band, but the very idea of rock bands was something of a new concept; it’s an era that will never be repeated. We should be grateful that this document of that time even exists.

2. ‘Some Girls: Live in Texas ’78’

Recorded: July 18, 1978 Released: 2011 (as part of a CD/Bluray set)// 2017 (as a standalone CD) Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts with Ian Stewart (piano), Ian McLagan (organ, electric and acoustic pianos, backing vocals) and Doug Kershaw (violin on "Far Away Eyes") Standout Tracks : Chuck Berry’s “Let It Rock,” which opens the show; the new songs from ‘Some Girls,’ including “When The Whip Comes Down,” the extended live jamming on “Miss You” and the country parody “Far Away Eyes.” Ronnie Wood’s first album with the Stones was 1976’s cool but uneven ‘Black and Blue’; he was one of three guitarists (other than Keith Richards and Mick Jagger) on the album. He, Wayne Perkins and Harvey Mandell were all playing on the sessions while auditioning for the band. But 1978’s ‘Some Girls’ was the Stones’ first with Wood as a member and was an instant classic. It was a number one album in the U.S., and it boasted “Miss You,” which topped the pop charts; the album clearly demonstrated that the Stones would endure disco (even as they appropriated it on “Miss You”) and punk rock (their own take on that movement was “When The Whip Comes Down”). Wood fit seamlessly into the band and gave them a new lease on life after Mick Taylor’s departure; you really hear how much he and Keith Richards love playing together on this album.

1. ‘Brussels Affair (Live 1973)’

Recorded: October 17, 1973 Released : 2011 (via Google Play and the Stones’ website)/ 2020 as part of the deluxe and super-deluxe versions of the ‘Goat’s Head Soup’ reissue Lineup : Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts with Billy Preston (keyboards, vocals), Steve Madaio (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Trevor Lawrence (saxophone) Standout Tracks: “Gimme Shelter”: this song is always a highlight, but it’s cool to hear how they arranged it before they had a female singer in their touring band. The new ‘Goat’s Head Soup’ songs are amazing, including “Dancing With Mr. D,” “Angie” and the X-Rated “Star Star.” Two other recent tunes, “All Down The Line” and “Rip This Joint,” also rock with fury. It was heavily bootlegged for years, and then the Stones decided to release it as a limited boxset… which they sold for $750 to $1,500, depending on how “deluxe” of an edition you wanted. Happily, it’s now a bit more affordable, as part of the ‘Goat’s Head Soup’ boxsets. It’s still a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. There aren’t enough live releases from Mick Taylor’s era with the band, and we’re grateful that this one is now available. By ‘73, the Stones had been around for over a decade, were successful rock stars, but they were still young and they still felt dangerous. We’ll say it right here: we love the Stones’ somewhat polished shows from 1989 through today, but there’s still a real magic to hearing them as a garage band who are burning up the stage.

HONORABLE MENTION: Live at the Checkerboard Lounge, Chicago 1981

Recorded : November 22, 1981 Released : 2012 LINEUP : Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Ian Stewart joined Muddy Waters and his band for this epic show, which also saw guest appearances by Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. STANDOUT TRACKS : The whole thing… especially once the Stones hit the stage, really, but “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Mannish Boy” and “Champagne and Reefer” were definite highlights It’s not technically perfect, but all the same, be grateful that someone had the presence of mind to record this.
