Tour Highlights

Itinerary details.

The itinerary is flexible and this is a sample to inspire you. We can tailor-make a trip based on your interests and requirements.

Welcome to Japan's capital, Tokyo! Greater Tokyo is the world's most populous metropolitan city and is the center of Japanese culture, finance, and government. It is also a major transportation hub. If you want to fully understand Japan, it is worth staying there for a few days.

You will be transferred to your accommodation from the arrivals hall at Narita International Airport in a shared van. The rest of the day is free for you to spend as you wish — you can spend some time adjusting to your jet lag at the hotel if you want to.

In the evening, when the neon lights of Shinjuku start to light up, you can wander around the stunning and bustling streets. There are many luxury stores, fascinating restaurants, and music bars nearby. Immerse yourself into Tokyo's liveliness.

Hotels in Tokyo

We can arrange different kinds of hotels to meet your needs based on your requirements and budget. Please let us know what you prefer and your travel advisor can give you more suggestions so that you can choose the one you like.

You can consider staying in Shinjuku as there are many business hotels so it is convenient for you to go everywhere you want to, especially if the hotel is near Shinjuku Station, which is one of the main and most important train and subway hubs in Tokyo.

After breakfast, visit Meiji Shrine with your private local guide. This is the most worshiped shrine in Tokyo. You can take part in typical Shinto activities there, such as making offerings in the main hall, buying charms and amulets, or writing your wish on an ema. It is also a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings. You might see a traditional wedding procession (or two) through the courtyard.

Walk along Omotesando shopping street (one of the streets that lead to Meiji Shrine). There are many luxury flagship stores, restaurants, and art galleries there, and it is recognized nowadays as a powerhouse in the world of fashion. If you are a shopaholic, you can spend the whole day shopping there.

Afterward, you will be transferred to the center of Tokyo's shitamachi (meaning "lower city"), Asakusa, which is Tokyo's old town. Tokyo's oldest and largest temple, Sensoji, is located there. Sensoji is a public amusement place with an Edo style. Its buildings will make you feel as though you've been transported back into 645 AD.

Then, one of the oldest streets in Japan, Nakamise, will come into view. It is extremely busy all year round, displaying hundreds of shops on both sides, which sell all kinds of local specialties, traditional Japanese snacks, and local souvenirs.

Before returning to your hotel, the final attraction for the day is Hamarikyu Gardens, which features a classic Japanese garden from the Edo period. The gardens are surrounded by Shiodome's futuristic skyscrapers. You can relax on a small island in the park's lake and enjoy a cup of matcha tea with Japanese sweets. Slow your pace and enjoy the tranquility.

You will go back to your accommodation from there using your Hakone Free Pass and train tickets.

Have you heard about the famous Japanese iaido? The term iaido, abbreviated to iai, means "the way of the sword" and is a modern Japanese martial art. Iaido is associated with the smooth, controlled movements of drawing a sword from its scabbard or saya and then striking or cutting. You will have the chance to take a lesson in iaido with a local teacher, using real iaido swords to experience the cutting techniques on bamboo or straw blocks.

It requires a unification between the person and the sword when wielding one. Therefore, you need to pay attention as to how to control it, which will also help improve your concentration in daily life.

After putting down the sword, you will spend some time learning shodo, which is Japanese calligraphy. You will get a step-by-step lesson from a local teacher on how to write kanji (Japanese pictographs). The teacher will teach you how to hold the pen correctly, which stroke should be stronger, how to learn the particular way each word must begin and end, and how to understand the correct order and path for each word.

Before returning to your accommodation, you will visit Shinjuku's Samurai Museum. It has a history of about 700 years and the building has a traditional Japanese style. It feels totally different from the neon surroundings in Shinjuku. The museum displays many incredible collections of armor, swords, and objects that belonged to samurai warriors throughout the ages.

In the morning, get your Hakone Free Pass together with your Romancecar ticket and travel to Hakone-Yumoto Station from Shinjuku Station. The train journey takes about 90 minutes.

When you arrive at Hakone-Yumoto Station, you can use your Hakone Free Pass to board the local train to Gora Station, then you can take a shuttle bus to your hotel from there. The rest of the day is free for you to spend as you wish.

You may be interested in visiting Hakone Gora Park, which is located on the steep slope above Gora Station. Find a cozy restaurant or coffee shop there, taste some Japanese fried rice and a salad, drink some coffee, and enjoy the views of Hakone. Just leave some time to relax.

Traditional Accommodation in Hakone

We highly recommend Japanese ryokans when you are in Hakone. You will have Japanese and Western-style rooms and can enjoy the tranquility and harmony of Japan.

We have selected several different types of accommodation to cater to different budgets and requirements, from spacious rooms with marble baths, to balconies overlooking Hakone's natural beauty. There are also simple, affordable, and conveniently located traditional inns.

You will have a free day to explore Hakone by yourself using your local pass.

You can use this pass to explore Hakone for the whole day. It covers eight forms of transportation, including trains, buses, the cableway, cable cars, and boats. You can use it to board and disembark freely in specified areas. You can also get discounts for various attractions. It is convenient for visitors and lets you feel like a native. Of course, you can also stay at your hotel to enjoy a hot spring or massage if you prefer.

Sample Itinerary

You can take the world's second-longest cable car up to Owakudani, which is a volcanic valley with active sulfur vents and hot springs in Hakone. It is a popular tourist site because of its scenic views and volcanic activity but especially the kuro-tamago ("black egg", which is an egg that has been hard-boiled in the sulfuric hot spring). If you eat this egg, it is said you can add 7 years to your life.

Many visitors don't want to miss taking a trip in a majestic replica pirate ship across Lake Ashinoko, which was formed 3,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption. The return train, Hakone Tozan, goes through the mountains so you can enjoy the fantastic views of the surrounding valleys.

You can use your Hakone Free Pass to go to Odawara Station in the morning and use your train ticket to get on the Shinkansen to Kyoto.

When you arrive at Kyoto Station, make your own way to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to do as you please. You can stay in your hotel to relax or have a massage.

Hotels in Kyoto

You can choose different hotels to suit your style and budget. Let us know your requirements and we will help you choose a reasonable one.

It is recommended to stay in a hotel that's located near Kyoto Station (a main hub in Kyoto where the bullet trains stop) as this would be convenient for you to get to all of the city attractions as well as Nara and Osaka.

If you want to experience the traditional Kyoto lifestyle, you can choose a boutique hotel that is located in the center of the Gion district. It is convenient for you to immerse in Kyoto's cultural atmosphere and you can easily visit the famous geisha quarter.

You can also consider the hotels near a subway station or the Kawaramachi area, which would be convenient if you want to travel to the city by public transport or just quickly visit some famous scenic spots.

If you just want to visit one city in Japan, it should be Kyoto. With its 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines as well as palaces, gardens, and intact architecture, Kyoto is one of the best-preserved cities in Japan. You will have the chance to experience Kyoto's comprehensive bus system to fully explore Kyoto with your guide.

Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) will be your first stop. It is the most famous temple in Kyoto. The shogun (military dictator) took over the site during the Muromachi period and built his villa there. After Yoshimitsu's death, the villa was turned into a temple.

Then, visit Nijo Castle, which will take you back to 1603. It is an ornamental castle surrounded by stunning gardens and it records Japan's war history from another side.

It is not an exaggeration to call Nishiki Market the kitchen of Kyoto. The bustling market is 400 meters long and each block sells all kinds of traditional snacks in Kyoto, such as fresh seafood, sweets, and sushi, as well as knives and cookware. It is worth lingering there for 2 hours.

You will visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which means Pure Water Temple, in the afternoon. It was founded by a Buddhist sect in 798 and was rebuilt in 1633 after a fire. The main hall has a large veranda supported by tall pillars, which juts out over the hillside and offers impressive views of the city. It is one of the famous and most enjoyable landmarks in Kyoto.

To end the day, the last stop is Sanjusangendo Temple. It is famous for its 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy.

The huge Avalokiteshvara Buddha with 1,000 arms and thousands of eyes in the middle is particularly gorgeous. The huge promenade is used as the venue for the annual archery competition.

Japan's former capital, Nara, is an ancient cultural city, which is called the "spiritual hometown" by Japanese people. Many temples and shrines that were built at that time are still there. You will take a 45-minute train ride from your hotel to this city together with your guide.

In the morning, you will visit Japan's largest Buddha at Todaiji Temple, which is the most famous and historically significant temple in Japan and a landmark in Nara.

Your next stop will be to visit Nara's most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha, which was established at the same time as the capital and is dedicated to the deity responsible for the city's protection.

Then, have a walk in Nara Park. The local people call it Deer Park.

In the Japanese Shinto culture, deer are considered to be sacred as they are messengers from gods and are highly protected. The park is home to hundreds of freely roaming deer and is now a symbol of the city.

You can see many new couples taking their wedding photos with the deer.

Another highlight of the day is to taste the famous Japanese sake in a brewery (a traditional Japanese-style building). You will have the chance to taste different kinds of sake and to see which one you prefer.

Have you watched the movie Memoirs of a Geisha? You will finish your day by visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine. You may recognize its elegant layout from the movie. The walking lane lined with red-painted toriis (memorial arches) is a good spot for photos.

You will have a shared transfer from your accommodation to Kansai International Airport to catch your flight home at the appointed time.

Seasonal information

Japan can be visited year-round, though there are benefits and drawbacks of every season. There are also some events such as the blooming of the cherry blossoms that can be only experienced during certain times of year.

Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Japan because of the beautiful, comfortable weather and the arrival of the cherry blossoms. The blooming of cherry blossoms or sakura has been a major part of Japanese culture for over 1,000 years and can only be experienced in the spring.

Because of the opportunity to witness sakura and the beautiful weather throughout the country, spring is high season in Japan, the time of year with most crowds and highest cost. If traveling to Japan in spring, it will be important to book flights and hotels well in advance.

Summer is the festival season in Japan, offering visitors an opportunity to experience multiple holidays and firework-shows in another country. Crowds are smaller in Japan in the summer, which means that standard prices for accommodation and flights are often lower.

Although not as busy as spring, fall is the second most popular time to travel to Japan. In the fall, the weather cools down and the lower humidity allows for more comfortable traveling outdoors.

Many people choose to visit Japan in the fall due to the changing colors of the leaves, turning brilliant orange and red, in the countryside near Kyoto and Tokyo.

During winter, especially at the north of the Japanese islands, there are icy winds from Siberia often accompanied by heavy snows. This makes for great opportunities to participate in winter sports, such as skiing, in some of the many famous resorts and mountains.

Accommodation

Japan offers a wide range of accommodation in both Japanese and western styles. Ryokans are traditional Japanese inns that offer a glimpse into a more traditional way of life. A ryokan room usually has tatami (traditionally rice-straw, today sometimes polystyrene foam or compressed wood chip) mat flooring, a futon (mattress), tables and chairs. Guests sleep on a futon laid out on the tatami.

While ryokans are the perfect places to stay in Hakone and other scenic and rural areas of Japan, when staying in the larger cities such as Tokyo or Kyoto, it's often best to choose hotels according to comfort, combined with location and convenience.

Business hotels, catering to budget-conscious business travelers, are generally located in city centers near train stations. They are very convenient, especially for tourists with a half-independent, half-guided itinerary. Most hotels provide two room categories — standard twin and standard double. Rooms are western-style, small (usually 16-22 square meters) and clean.

Let us know your style preferences, and our travel consultant will find the most suitable hotel room for you.

Meals are not included. During a full day tour, your guide will take you to a budget or mid-range restaurant for a quick lunch. These restaurants are often near the train stations, or in malls. You will need to pay on the spot in cash when finished with your meal.

Japan's cuisine is based on combining staple foods, typically rice or noodles, with a soup and okazu — dishes made from fish, meat or vegetables, to add flavor to the staple food. These are typically flavored with dashi, miso and soy sauce.

The most famous Japanese food is sushi. This is cooked vinegared rice (shari) combined with other ingredients (neta).

Other prominent foods are: sashimi, fresh raw meat, most commonly fish, sliced into thin pieces; tempura, seafood or vegetables covered in batter and deep fried; and sukiyaki, a popular dish of thinly sliced beef, served with vegetables, tofu and vermicelli, and usually cooked on a sizzling iron skillet at the table.

If you have special dietary requirements, simply tell your travel agent at the time of booking. Come with an open mind and open mouth, and you won't be disappointed.

Traveling Around by Train

Public transport services in Japan are admirable. Most major cities are connected by shinkansen bullet trains, which speed along at an incredible 300 km/hour. Many famous sightseeing areas lie on or near the bullet train lines between Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka, making it convenient to visit places such as Kyoto, Himeji Castle and Hiroshima.

Flying is probably best when travelling from the country's main hubs to some of the more far-flung destinations, such as Okinawa and Hokkaido. Ferries are surprisingly uncommon, as all the major islands are linked by bridges and tunnels.

The Japan Rail Pass offers overseas visitors unlimited travel on a vast network of trains. You can choose a 7-day, 14-day or 21-day pass, first or standard class. It must be purchased before a trip.

Traveling Within Cities by Public Transportation

Local transport systems in major cities are efficient, safe and clean. For example, Tokyo has an extensive metro and over ground rail system, and it is best to use a pre-loaded transport card, such as Suica, to get around. Hold your card against the barriers at the station entrance to access the platform.

Kyoto's bus system is quite convenient for getting around the city and is the best way to reach many of the main attractions. The ICOCA electronic card or a 1-day pass are valid on most forms of city transport.

Taxis can be useful over short distances but they are very expensive during peak travel hours. Not only is public transport typically very convenient in Japan, it is also much cheaper than the average $1,000 a day needed to rent a private car with driver.

Private cars can be arranged, only at a higher price. We recommend using private car services for travelers in family groups, or groups of about 5 people, seeking a more intimate experience.

We recommend packing light and smart for your trip, as you will be required to carry your own luggage between train stations and hotels. This will involve climbing stairs and slopes. Light luggage is also better for bullet trains, which often provide little space for luggage larger than a carry-on suitcase.

For travelers with heavy baggage, it can be difficult to find a particular train or exit during rush hour. But again, Japan's travel infrastructure is among the most advanced in the world, and railway staff and local people generally try to be helpful to foreigners.

We always advise booking as early as possible when making travel arrangements in Japan, especially when travelling during the peak periods of March-May or October-November.

Closure of tourist sites can occur at short notice on public holidays. Please be advised that many long-distance trains, ferries, and airlines will be fully booked, as well as hotels and guest houses, during the following peak periods:

New Year holiday season (December 29 to January 3, plus adjacent weekends); "Golden Week" holiday season (April 29 to May 5, and adjacent weekends); "Bon" Festival season (one week around August 15).

Konnichiwa! Welcome to Japan. Bursting with contemporary urban culture, Tokyo has fascinating museums, world-class shopping and backstreets stuffed with restaurants and karaoke bars. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight. After, you’ll have some free time to explore Tokyo’s nightlife. Perhaps take a walk down Shinjuku’s Omoide Tokocho or ‘Memory Lane’ – a crowded alley of busy restaurants and bar stalls that started in the 1940s and quickly gained infamy as a black-market quarter. Today, it’s one of the best spots to try some of Tokyo’s local fast food!

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Tokyo - welcome meeting and orientation walk
  • Tokyo - Tsukiji Fish Market - Free

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Dive right into Tokyo today by exploring historic Asakusa – one of the older and more traditional parts of the city. Visit the city’s oldest temple – Senso-ji – founded almost 1400 years ago when Tokyo was nothing more than a fishing village. Browse the many interesting stalls filled with tasty treats, crafts and souvenirs that line the shopping street of Nakamise Dori. Then, hop on the metro and head to the buzzing Shibuya area. Check out one of the busiest intersections in the world before heading into a depachika (underground food hall) for a mouth-watering array of tempting Japanese treats. Next, allow the city sounds to fade away as you visit Meiji Shrine, surrounded by forest. Then it’s back into the city streets to explore the Harajuku district – the home of Japan’s quirky youth pop culture. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to spend at your leisure.

  • Tokyo - Sensoji Temple
  • Tokyo - Meiji Jingu Shrine
  • Tokyo - Shibuya walking tour
  • Tokyo - Shinjuku-gyoen - JPY500
  • Tokyo - Yoyogi Park - Free

Leave Tokyo behind and jump on the train to Mishima – a city built on the lava flow of Mr Fuji. Thanks to an eruption several thousand years ago, the soil here is rich in nutrients and there’s an endless supply of fresh, filtered water that flows through the city like a natural irrigation system. As a result, Mishima is a garden city with many waterways running alongside residential streets. When you arrive, head to the longest suspension bridge in Japan – 400-m-long Mishima Skywalk – for an unbeatable view of Mt Fuji. You’ll then have free time to explore at your own pace. Maybe visit Mishima Shrine or wander along the waterways and through the many parks. When you’ve worked up an appetite, maybe try the city’s special charbroiled eel that’s said to have been prepped by filtered fuji water! If you’re lucky enough to visit during cherry blossom season, there’s nothing better than a picnic as the sun goes down.

  • Mishima - Mishima Skywalk
  • Mishima - Mishima Taisha Shrine - Free

Today, you’ll hop on a local train to Kanaya station, then transfer to the scenic train that travels through the mountains and gorges of Kawane. The ride is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season in the spring and when the colours change in autumn! After disembarking at Senzu station, your hosts will welcome you and take you straight to their home. This afternoon, you’ll visit a local tea farm to try your hand at tea picking, learn about how tea is properly brewed and try some tea tempura. Your farm hosts will also show you the local seasonal vegetables they’ve got in their garden. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty and help out with some farm work! Dinner will be a home-cooked feast using seasonal vegetables from the farm and your host will be able to teach you a trick or two about Japanese home cooking.

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Kawane - Farm Stay & Home-cooked Dinner
  • Kawane - Tea Farm Visit & Tea Brewing & Tasting
  • Kawane - Scenic Train Ride

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Please prepare an overnight pack for today as your main luggage will be forwarded to your hotel on Day 5.

The scenic training has been suspended due to damages. Until it's been restored, you'll take a bus instead.

Your farm stay tonight is a rare chance to have some real insight into the rural life in Japan. The group may be split and stay in different houses and there may be up to 4 people sharing one household. The facilities will also be shared and you’ll sleep on traditional tatamis, just like the locals.

Tea picking season is from the end of April to October. Outside of this season, you’ll still be able to learn about how tea is properly brewed at the farm.

After a home-cooked, Japanese-style breakfast, hop on the bus and a Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto. One of the Kyoto’s original names was Heian-kyo, which literally translates to ‘tranquility and peace capital’, and the thousands of temples, shrines and gardens make it clear why. In the afternoon, head to the Noshiki Market and stroll through ‘Kyoto’s Kitchen’ for the perfect introduction to Kyoto's regional specialties – from pickled vegetables hidden beneath layers of fermented rice to delicious and ornate Kyo-wagashi (Kyoto sweets) and other local produce. As the sun goes down, continue to Gion – the city’s cultural centre and most famous geisha district. You may catch a glimpse of an elegantly attired geisha or maiko moving between teahouses here, though much of this high-class world of entertainment is still off-limits to outsiders.

  • Kyoto - Gion District walk
  • Kyoto - Nishiki-Koji Market
  • Kawane - Home-cooked Japanese Breakfast
  • Kyoto - Gion Corner cultural centre - JPY5500
  • Kyoto - Imperial Palace - Free

Today, you’ll head to one of the most photogenic spots in Kyoto – Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine. Famous for the thousands of scarlet torii (square archways) along the path, this shrine is dedicated to Inari – the god of rice. Because foxes do his bidding, there are also plenty of fox statues along the way. Then, visit a 300-year-old sake brewery – the city’s oldest continuously run brewery. Learn about their special sake-brewing techniques and the importance of rice and water before sampling some for yourself. The rest of the day is free for you to explore at your own pace. If you’re in a contemplative mood, the Path of Philosophy might have what you’re after. Stroll beside a stream, beneath the dappled shade of blossoming trees, past the Zen temple Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion and Nanzen-ji Temple. You can keep walking south to the Old Town and explore the wooden houses, or visit Kinkakuhi Temple, immortalised in Yukio Mishima’s novel ‘The Golden Pavilion’.

  • Kyoto - Fushimi Inari-Taisha
  • Kyoto - Sake Brewery Visit & Tasting
  • Kyoto Tower - JPY900
  • Kyoto - Bike hire (per day) from - JPY1200
  • Kyoto - Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) - JPY500
  • Kyoto - Ryoanji Zen Garden - JPY600
  • Kyoto - Arashiyama Bamboo Forest - Free
  • Kyoto - Path of Philosophy (Tetsugaku-no-Michi) - Free

Jump back on the train this morning and head onto Osaka – Japan’s unofficial food capital. When you arrive, follow your leader on an orientation walk, then explore the city at your own pace. Meet in the evening for a street food walking tour with your group through Dotombori District and Kuromon Market and celebrate the end of this fast and furious journey in Japan with your fellow travellers.

  • Osaka - Dotombori and Kuromon Street Food Walking Tour

With no further activities planned after breakfast, your trip comes to an end today. If you would like to extend your stay in Osaka, just reach out to your booking agent ahead of time.

Trip Planning FAQs

The best travel style for you will depend on your personal travel preferences and budget. Group tours are popular because they are more cost-effective than private tours , more hassle-free, and offer the chance for friendship within tour groups. Most of our group tours use a private coach for sightseeing, your driver will take you to the closest parking and you just need to walk to each destination from there. A private coach is a more flexible and a more hassle free way to visit Japan, this allows you to see as much of Japan as stress-free as possible. Private tours are often more costly, but offer full control of the travel pace and the sights you want to see, at the budget you set. If you would like to travel at your own pace, then custom private tours are for you. For a small group of 2 or 3 people, public transportation is the most cost efficient way to travel Japan. However, there is a lot of walking if you travel by public transportation since some attractions are far from the station, you will need extra days to visit the same sites compared to our group tours , and also you will need to able to walk 3-5 miles per day. We can also offer private tours by using private van. If you are looking for a private tour for 2 people with the same quality as our group tours , it will cost almost double the price. The larger the group size, the lower the cost per person.

Japan is a country with more places to see than might be expected of its size. For first-time travelers to Japan, the cities of Tokyo , Hakone , Mount Fuji , Takayama , Kanazawa , Nara , Kyoto , and Hiroshima are most recommended. Tokyo's glittering lights, tall skyscrapers, fine dining, and cultural experiences make it the number one place to visit. Kyoto is a must-see for its ancient temples, shrines, and gardens. It is also one of the best places for a spring cherry blossom tour . First time travelers enjoy Hakone and Mount Fuji's natural beauty, and a tour to see the autumn leaves in fall is especially lovely. Nara is near Kyoto and a top city for temples and beautiful nature. If you have enough time, go to Takayama and Shirakawago for ancient Japan historical sites and an authentic cultural experience, and go to Hiroshima for a walk in the Peace Park, past the A-Bomb Dome. More time means you can visit all the best Japanese cities!

A second trip is the perfect chance to explore a more real, authentic Japan atmosphere. The most recommended destinations for a second-time traveler to Japan are Tohoku , Hokkaido , Kyushu , and Okinawa . Take a trip out of central Honshu to visit the Tohoku region, where you can see the Aomori Nebuta Festival and the Sendai Tanabata fireworks in an exciting summer tour . Venture off the main island to the beautiful nature landscapes up in Hokkaido . Go down into Shikoku to discover the amazing treasures of Naoshima Art Island and the local Awa Odori dance festival of Tokushima . Go further south into Kyushu for the shrine at Takachiho or the Hidden Christian Sites at Nagasaki . Second-time travelers will enjoy a summer vacation in Japan to Okinawa's beautiful, perfect beaches. Japan has endless destinations to appeal to the second time traveler!

The prices will range widely depending on the destinations, duration, and your demands for comfort. Let's take one of the most popular itineraries as an example - a 7-day tour to Tokyo , Hakone , Mt Fuji , Kyoto , Nara and Osaka . For 2 people staying in 4-star accommodations, it will cost about US$3500 per person as a private Japan land tour , using public transportation (bullet train, local train, subway and taxi). If you join in a group tour with a similar itinerary, the trip usually costs about US$2700 per person. No matter how much you want to spend on a trip, as the best Japan tour company, we are always happy to tailor make a private tour itinerary that best fits your needs. In addition, our early bird discount can also help you save more.

The length of the trip will depend on the destinations and how much of Japan you want to see. For a single city vacation package ( Tokyo or Kyoto ), two to three days are required. If you want to visit three to four cities ( Tokyo , Mt Fuji , Kyoto & Nara ), you will need around one week. A 10-day Japan vacation package usually would cover five to six cities ( Tokyo , Mt Fuji , Kyoto , Nara , Osaka & Hiroshima ). For a two-week trip to Japan, you can add Takayama , Shirakawa-go , and Kanazawa to the popular sights in central Japan.

Any time of the year is the best time to visit Japan! In March and April, you can see beautiful cherry blossoms, in May there are seasonal flowers, such as Wisteria, Baby blue eyes, and shibazakura (phlox moss). The summer months from June to August is the best time for festivals like Awa Odori, and there are amazing fireworks festivals, too. In Hokkaido, fields of lavenders are in bloom at this time, as well as many other summer flowers. Autumn is the best time to see the bright autumn leaves, as the fall foliage changes to vibrant colors, and winter is good for the Sapporo Snow Festival, skiing in the mountains, and seeing snow monkeys! We have group tours available in every season, and can plan a private tour around your schedule.

You can see the cherry blossoms at different times in spring, depending on where you travel - earlier in the south, and later as you move north. Southern to Central Japan sees cherry blossoms from late March to mid April. This is the perfect time to see the pretty pink flowers anywhere from Nagasaki and Fukuoka to Kyoto's Maruyama Park, all the way over to popular Ueno Park in Tokyo. The Tohoku region's cherry blossoms bloom around late April, if you travel up to Sendai or Morioka. Up in Hokkaido, late April to early May is the perfect time for a stroll in a park in Hakodate or Sapporo to see the famous cherry blossoms.

More about your trip

Your tour :

  • The prices displayed on this page may vary according to the exchange rate of the Japanese Yen.
  • Unfortunately, this tour is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
  • Children and babies are welcome. From 3 to 11 years old, a child rate is offered. In each accommodation, a standard adult bed will be offered to them, and a standard seat will be allocated to them in transport. From 0 to 2 years old inclusive, a "baby" rate is offered. This price corresponds to the allocation of a cot in the majority of the accommodation of the chosen tor. However, we cannot guarantee a baby cot in each accommodation.
  • Pets are not allowed.
  • This itinerary is subject to change due to circumstances such as weather conditions or any other case of force majeure. Please note that due to the current circumstances, any information mentioned is subject to change or modification.
  • Travel diary sent by email before departure, and any other electronic documents
  • Physical/paper documents (airport transfer ticket, transportation card, Japan Rail Pass voucher) and Pocket WiFi upon arrival at the airport by our airport assistant.
  • NOTE: In very rare cases, mostly in peak season, steps might be reversed. You will be informed of this in your Travel diary should it happen. We appreciate your understanding.

Your accommodation :

  • Some hotels may ask you to pay a tourist tax on arrival. This depends on the city and even the hotel, as some do not include it in the booking price. Normally, it is 200¥/night/person (about £1.37/1.93$) but can be slightly higher in 4* hotels. It must be paid in cash at the hotel reception. For traditional Japan Experience accommodations, it is included in the initial tour price.
  • Room size: in Japan, a densely populated country where everything is compact, 3-star luxury hotels are of very good quality but the rooms are often quite narrow (12 to 20m2/129 sq ft to 215 sq ft) depending on the hotel. Please note the size of the single room, between 10 and 16m2 (107sq ft and 172sq ft). For more comfort, you can choose our luxury 4* accommodation upgrade option. (This option is only valid for the hotel in Tokyo, not for the traditional accommodation in Kyoto).
  • Double room: Rooms for two people in western hotels have 2 single beds (twin rooms) by default, which can usually be joined together. As an option, you can select a double room instead of a twin if you prefer a double bed.
  • Single room: People travelling alone and wishing to book a single room must pay a supplement at the time of booking. The single room supplement is compulsory for orders with an odd number of participants. Please note that if you request more than two people in a single room, the single room supplement will be applied to all accommodation except for the ryokans (3 and 4*). In fact, as this is traditional accommodation, people with the same reservation are grouped together in spacious rooms for up to 5 people.
  • 3-person room: If there are 3, 5 or more of you and you do not select the single supplement, a triple room will be allocated to you.
  • In the case of a group order (> 5 people), it is possible, depending on hotel availability, that not all members of the group will be accommodated in the same hotel. Nevertheless, we aim to keep you close.
  • Names of the hotels : The names given on the site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, an establishment of equivalent standing will be provided. Hotels, corresponding to local standards, are given as an indication and may be changed on site for hotels of a similar category.
  • In a ryokan , guests sleep on comfortable futons placed on a tatami mat floor. The room has a private sink and toilet. As is customary in Japanese ryokan , the onsen bathroom is shared (not mixed) unless you select the "private bathroom in the room" option. OPTIONAL: Enjoy a private Japanese bathroom (traditional or modern onsen) in your room. This option is recommended for mixed couples, families, people who are modest or have visible tattoos. The 4* ryokan (see 4* option) have comfortable futons raised on either western beds or in a traditional tatami room. The bathrooms and toilets of the 4* ryokan are always private.

Your transport :

  • Flights are not included in this tour . Please contact us if you would like to include flights in your order: Flights in economy class with stopovers or direct flights, eco-premium or business air upgrades, provincial departures or abroad: we can advise you.
  • The tour departure and end dates presented on this page relate to your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and will also leave from Tokyo. You will have to leave Europe the day before and land at 6pm at the latest to make the most of the airport services of your tour (welcome and transfer to Tokyo). The return flight is on the same day due to the time difference, with a departure time of 9am at the earliest. Please consult us for any uncertainty or need for precision in the choice of international flights.
  • If the flights have been purchased by you without the involvement of Japan Experience, you must to send us the details at least one month before your departure (flight number, airport, date and time of arrival) to allow us to organize your welcome and airport transfer.
  • Airport Transfers: The shared limousine bus leaves from the airport and stops either in front of your hotel or at a stop within 1-15 minutes walk from your hotel. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will drive you to the platform to pick up the airport transfer. The transfer to the hotel is unassisted. If you wish to be accompanied from the airport to your hotel reception, please choose the option "Accompanied Airport Transfer". This transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other clients leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival and stops can be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to take the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option. Please note: due to the many changes in flight schedules by the airlines, if the airline notifies you of a change in arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and if it exceeds 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport shuttle. You will then have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline for abusive schedule changes. The same applies to your return journey: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. Similarly, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement procedures with the airline company being the only solution. Japan Experience is not responsible for last minute schedule changes.
  • Included in your tour is a pre-charged transport prepayment card of ¥1,500 (around £8 / $9) (Suica or Pasmo card); a transport pass for the Tokyo Shinjuku -> Hakone route and all transport in the Hakone region (excluding taxis) and a 14-day Japan Rail Pass. These 3 cards should cover a large part of your trips during the stay. Upon expiry of the ¥1,500 Transport Prepayment Card, or if the line you are travelling on is not covered by your Japan Rail Pass, any travel will be at your own expense by recharging your pre-paid transport card (at vending machines in all stations and metro stations).
  • Travel by metro and bus in the cities (payable by pre-paid transport card, included in your package)
  • Transfers from the train station to the hotels (by foot, bus, metro or taxi)
  • Travel on private train lines (other than JR)
  • Travel on Nozomi and Mizuho high-speed trains (shinkansen)
  • Trips made outside the validity period of the Japan Rail Pass
  • Japan Rail Pass: It is not necessary to possess a Japan Rail Pass which covers your entire stay. This is only cost-effective if it is used for long journeys between the different stages of your stay (especially in shinkansen) which are very expensive. In large cities like Tokyo, only about ⅓ of public transport is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and getting around is relatively cheap (Tokyo Metro tickets: £1.70 / $2.40; Kyoto daily bus card: £4.20 / $5.90). Thus, providing you with a Japan Rail Pass for more than 14 days (21) would not be cost-effective and, on the contrary, would significantly increase the cost of your trip.
  • If a person taking part in the tour is a Japanese national and a resident of Japan, or a foreigner with tax residence in Japan (including a student), then that person is not eligible for the Japan Rail Pass. Please contact us to get the price of the tour without a Japan Rail Pass. They will have to buy the train tickets for the tour directly in Japan. The Kansai Railway Pass is also subject to the same nationality/residency requirements. This is not the case for the Hakone Free pass. If this person is a Japanese citizen but not a resident of Japan, then he/she can benefit from the Japan Rail Pass under certain conditions (see  https://www.japan-experience.com/frequently-asked-questions ).

Your activities :

  • The Airport Welcome is in English. Your airport assistant will be waiting for you at the customs exit holding a sign with the name of your reservation. They will give you your travel documents and take you to your airport transfer. They will not accompany you to Tokyo.
  • The Shinjuku tour is a guided group tour lasting around 2 hours and departing at 7pm. Please note that the tour will be conducted in English if your group is made up of travellers of different nationalities. More details on the meeting point in your travel pack. Dinner is not included, but your guide will be able to recommend the best places to eat.
  • The guided tour of Gion lasts around 2 hours and departs at 7pm. Please note that the tour will be conducted in English if your group is made up of travellers of different nationalities. More details on the meeting point in your travel pack. Dinner is not included, but your guide will be able to recommend the best places to eat.

Your meals :

  • Breakfasts which are not included in your package can be added at the reception when you arrive at the hotel. However, you will find many cafés near your hotel serving good breakfasts, often tastier and less expensive than those in the hotels, which sometimes have tight schedules and are predominantly savoury. However, if you would like to add breakfast to your stay when you make your reservation, you can select it as an option.
  • Traditional Japanese dinner and Japanese breakfast (mostly savoury) are included in your Hakone stay. Don't hesitate to let us know any dietary requirements you may have, we will pass them on to the ryokan so that they can take them into account when planning the meals. However if the ryokan cannot take these dietary requirements into account, we cannot be held responsible and no compensation will be issued.

Your additional services:

  • A pocket wifi is included in your tour. It allows unlimited high-speed internet access. Your Pocket WiFi will be given to you at the airport upon arrival.
  • It comes with a small booklet to operate your device (don't panic, it's simple to use) and a prepaid envelope to return your device at the end of your stay. Your pocket wifi will work until the last day of your trip to Japan.
  • A maximum of 5 different devices can be connected to one pocket wifi at once (phone, tablet, computer).
  • A single pocket wifi is provided for a tour booking of 1 to 5 people. For an order of 6 people or more, a second pocket wifi will be added automatically and at no extra cost to your reservation.

When you buy, Japan Experience offers you TWO types of protection:

Japan Experience Flex :  Cancellation insurance before departure under conditions.

Is it safe to travel in Japan? What about solo travellers and children?

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, ranked in the top 10 by the Global Peace Index. Therefore travelling alone is safe. Women and girls can travel alone without fear of being harassed or solicited in public places. The same goes for children, who can be seen going to school alone in the metro from the age of 7. This can give you an idea of the country's level of safety. Last but not least, Japan is a haven for children: the safety, the amusement parks, the friendly attitude of the population.

When to go to Japan?

There are 4 seasons in Japan.

Spring , from the end of February to the end of May, is a mild season suitable for all kinds of activities. It is of course the period when sakura (cherry trees) bloom, the perfect occasion to admire them (hanami). Their blooming period is between March 20 and April 10 for Tokyo and Kyoto areas, while it is possible to admire them earlier in the south of the country and later in the north. The cherry blossom period is very popular and generates a lot of crowds. However, there are other beautiful flowers that bloom during this season: plum blossoms, with their sparkling pink at the end of February; fabulous azaleas in April-May; hydrangeas of all colors or irises during June.

Summer , from June to August, is generally synonymous with heat with a rainy season in the last two weeks of June during which you can expect rain several days a week. During this very hot and humid season, it is possible to enjoy fireworks (hanabi) in July and August, as well as matsuri , traditional Japanese festivals. Among the most famous are the Gion matsuri, which is held in Kyoto in mid-July or the Obon Matsuri in mid-August.

Then comes the high wind season (taifu) , which reaches its peak between August and September, but it is not necessary to avoid going during this period. Indeed, there is little chance that they will involve changing your travel plans, few of them even reaching the main island.

Autumn , from September to November, is the season when temperatures are generally the most pleasant, quite similar to the continental European climate. It is also the season when the country is decorated with red tones and when one can admire the momiji (literally red leaves) which are usually visible in Tokyo, Kyoto and their region during the last two weeks of November.

Finally, winter, from December to February, is the coldest season but also the opportunity to admire the striking beauty of winter landscapes . December is a period of calm before the holiday season, while January is marked by a drop in temperature and the presence of a number of festivals. In central Japan, temperatures usually range from -4 to 10°C. In the mountains and the north of the country, temperatures drop significantly, while in Kyushu and Okinawa, winter tends to be milder.

The most touristic periods are :  - in February, the 10 days around the Chinese New Year, which marks a strong influx of tourists from all over Asia; - between the end of March and the beginning of April, the cherry blossom period; - between the end of April and the beginning of May, during the "Golden Week", a period with many public holidays and during which many Japanese go on vacation; - mid-August, during the Obon Matsuri; - at the end of November, the best period to observe the momiji; - early January, for the New Year, when many businesses and activities are closed.   So, if you want to go during a less crowded period, Japan Experience recommends you to go : - in February, outside the Chinese New Year period, for the cool but nevertheless pleasant weather and the splendid blooming of plum trees, before the cherry trees; - between mid-May and early June, to take advantage of the mild weather, lower traffic and the blooming of hydrangeas, azaleas and irises; - from September to early December, to take advantage of good temperatures, a reasonable level of tourism and the momiji period in late November.

Three geisha in the Gion District of Kyoto, Japan

DATE: March 12th, 2025  Kyoto

Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto by shinkansen.

Once we arrive in Kyoto we will visit three of the city's most famous places - Fushimi-Inari Shrine, Gion (Geisha District) and the historic Yasaka Shrine.

We start our half day tour of Kyoto by visiting Fushimi-Inari Shrine, one of the most iconic places in Kyoto. It is famous for its thousands of orange colored torii gates that straddle a network of trails behind the main shrine itself. The trails lead to the top of Mount Inari, which stands at 233 meters and belongs to the shrine grounds. Although most tourists are attracted to the shrine by the beautiful scenery, Fushimi-Inari Shrine is actually the most important of several thousands of shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice. Foxes are thought to be Inari's messengers, resulting in many fox statues throughout the shrine grounds. Fushimi-Inari Shrine also has ancient origins, predating the capital's move to Kyoto in 794 A.D.

Our next destination is Gion, where we will enjoy a leisurely stroll through the beautiful streets of Kyoto's world famous geisha district. If we are lucky we might even get to see a real geisha as we stroll through the streets.

Not far from Gion is the historic Yasaka Shrine, one of Kyoto's most famous Shinto shrines. This shrine is well known for hosting one of Japan's most famous festivals, the Gion Matsuri. This festival is held every year in July, and dates back over a thousand years.

The beautiful Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) in Kyoto, Japan

DATE: March 13th, 2025  Kyoto

Spend the day taking in some of the most iconic sights of this traditional city. Today we will visit the historic Nijo Castle, the world famous Golden Pavilion, and the beautiful bamboo grove in Arashiyama.

Our first stop on our full half day tour of Kyoto is Nijo Castle. This historic castle was first constructed in 1603, and was the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1867). The castle's buildings are widely considered to be the best surviving examples of castle palace architecture from Japan's feudal era.

Our next stop, the Golden Pavilion (otherwise known as "Kinkaku-ji), is one of the most famous and most recognizable buildings in all of Japan. Formally the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it is now a magnificent Buddhist Zen Temple completely covered in gold leaf.

We finish the day by traveling out to Arashiyama, widely considered to be the second-most famous sightseeing district in Kyoto. The main attraction here is the picturesque Arashiyama bamboo grove. It is one of Kyoto’s top sights, and for good reason. Standing amid the soaring stalks of bamboo is like being in another world.

Dotonbori in downtown Osaka, Japan

DATE: March 14th, 2025  Osaka

Travel from Kyoto to Osaka by limited express train.

Once we arrive in Osaka we will spend the day taking in some of the most famous sites of Japan's second largest city.

We start our day by visiting the majestic Osaka Castle. This castle was first built in 1583, and is one of Japan's most famous landmarks.

In the afternoon we explore "downtown" Osaka, including a leisurely stroll along Midosuji Avenue, Osaka's main shopping street. We will start in Namba and walk all the way down this bustling shopping arcade to Shinsaibashi, crossing over the famous Ebisubashi Bridge on the way.

Beautiful Himeji Castle in early spring in HImeji, Japan

DATE: March 15th, 2025   Osaka

Enjoy a beautiful day trip to Himeji stopping by Kobe (Meriken Park and China Town) on the way.

Meriken Park is a beautiful waterfront park located in Kobe's port area. It is home to some of Kobe's most iconic contemporary architecture, such as the red Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum. On the way to Meriken Park we will enjoy a stroll through Kobe's famous China Town, which is the second most famous China Town in Japan.

After enjoying some time in Kobe, we will then travel to Himeji by shinkansen. Once we arrive in Himeji we will visit the majestic Himeji Castle, which is widely regarded as the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture. Himeji Castle, also commonly known as White Heron Castle because of its elegant, white appearance, is one of Japan's original 12 castles, and is undoubtedly the most impressive and imposing castle in all of Japan.

At night we will enjoy a lovely farewell dinner together at a local izakaya (Japanese-style restaurant/bar ).

Japan Airlines planes at Osaka Airport in Japan

The 10 most wonderful places to visit in Japan

Rebecca Milner

Mar 28, 2024 • 6 min read

An internationally married couple who came to Tsukiji for sightseeing while eating fried food

From buzzing cities to serene forest walks, these are our favorite places to visit in Japan © Taiyou Nomachi / Getty Images

Japan offers up a real feast for travelers, with mountainside onsen (hot spring) villages, beach-lined islands and buzzing megacities all on the menu.

You could arguably spend a lifetime sampling the country’s delights, but some towns and sights are staples – core ingredients to any great Japan trip. Here’s our pick of the 10 best places to visit in Japan .

Best for contemporary culture

Tokyo is a city forever reaching into the future, pushing the boundaries of what's possible on densely populated, earthquake-prone land, and building ever taller, sleeker structures.

It's Japan's top spot for contemporary art and architecture, pop culture, shopping, drinking and entertainment (and a tie with Kyoto for dining). But more than any other sight, it's the city itself that enchants visitors.

It's a sprawling, organic thing, stretching as far as the eye can see. Constantly changing with a diverse collection of neighborhoods , no two experiences of Tokyo are ever the same.

Planning tip: Tickets for sumo, kabuki and Giants baseball games usually go on sale one to two months in advance. The Imperial Palace and Ghibli Museum are other popular attractions that require prior planning.

Father and daughter playing with snow in Kyoto Japan

Best for traditional experiences

Kyoto , Japan's imperial capital for a thousand years, is home to more than a thousand temples. Among them are the monumental, like Kinkaku-ji (an exquisite pavilion sheathed entirely in gold leaf), and the meditative, like Ryōan-ji , with its stark Zen rock garden.

And temples are only the beginning. There's the culture of tea, which you can appreciate at one of the city's many elegant teahouses; the art of the geisha, those iconic performers of traditional music and dance; and also a rich food culture, including kaiseki (Japanese haute cuisine).

3. Naoshima

Best for architecture

Naoshima is one of Japan's great success stories: once a rural island on the verge of becoming a ghost town, it's now a world-class center for contemporary art.

Many of Japan's most lauded architects have contributed structures, including museums, a boutique hotel and even a bathhouse – all designed to enhance the island's natural beauty and complement its existing settlements.

The resulting blend of avant-garde and rural Japan is captivating. It has also inspired some Japanese to pursue a slower life outside the big cities, relocating to Naoshima to open cafes and inns.

Planning tip: Try to plan your visit during one of the three exhibitions of the Setouchi Triennale festival, which happens during the spring, summer and fall every three years – the most recent was in 2022. Naoshima hosts various art, drama, music and dance events that make this festival really special.

Two bench stand empty beneath trees with autumnal leaves and next to a large lake, Lake Kawaguchiko, with the giant Mt Fuji in the distance. The mountain is topped by snow.

Best for views and pilgrimages

Even from a distance, Mt Fuji will take your breath away. Close up, the perfectly symmetrical cone of Japan's highest peak is nothing short of incredible. Dawn from the summit? Pure magic.

Fuji-san is among Japan's most revered and timeless attractions. Hundreds of thousands of people climb it every year, continuing a centuries-old tradition of pilgrimages up the sacred volcano.

Those who'd rather search for picture-perfect views from the less-daunting peaks nearby will be following in the steps of Japan's most famous painters and poets.

Planning tip: The best time to climb Mt Fuji is during its official season, from July 1 through mid-September, which avoids the rainy season and snowfall. Always check for typhoon warnings before hiking in Japan.

5. Hiroshima

Best for introspection

Hiroshima today is a forward-thinking city with attractive, leafy boulevards. It's not until you visit the Peace Memorial Museum that the true extent of human tragedy wreaked by the atomic bomb becomes vividly clear.

A visit here is a heartbreaking, important history lesson. The park around the museum , much of which was designed by Japan's great modernist architect Tange Kenzō, offers many opportunities for reflection.

But the city's spirit of determination – as well as its food – will ensure that you'll have good memories to take with you when you leave.

A forest walkway on the island of Yakushima that goes through the trunk of a giant cedar tree.

6. Yakushima

Best for forest bathing

Yakushima, a small island off the coast of southern Kyūshū , is often described as magical and enchanting – otherworldly even. It's a place where words fail and clichés step in.

Home to some of Japan's last primeval forests, you'll find the yakusugi , an ancient cedar native to the island whose giant roots seem to form alien tentacles.

Hiking trails underneath them cover craggy terrain, often fuzzy with moss. The landscape here is believed to have inspired the iconic Studio Ghibli animated film, Princess Mononoke .

Detour: When you're not hiking, stop by the Yakusugi Museum to learn more about the importance of yakusugi to the islanders of Yakushima. An English audio guide is available.

7. Koya-san

Best for exploring temples

Riding the funicular up to the sacred Buddhist monastic complex of Kōya-san feels, appropriately, like ascending to another world.

There are over a hundred temples here, the highlight of which is Oku-no-in , where paths weave their way among towering cryptomeria trees and time-worn stone stupas covered in moss and lichen.

Other temples offer a different experience: the chance to spend the night, dine on traditional vegetarian Buddhist cuisine and wake up early for morning meditation with the resident monks.

Planning tip: Though Japanese temples and shrines do not have established dress codes, visitors are expected to stay relatively quiet in these sacred spaces.

8. Okinawa and the Southwest Islands

Best for beaches

Okinawa and the Southwest Islands offer a totally different experience from the rest of Japan. This semi-tropical archipelago forms an arch between Kyūshū and Taiwan .

Until the islands were annexed by Japan in the 19th century, they formed their own kingdom – the Ryūkyū Empire – and the cultural differences are apparent in everything from the architecture to the food.

This is where you'll find Japan's best beaches, like those on the Yaeyama Islands and the Kerama Islands, with sugar-white sand fringed with palms and turquoise waters. Bask in the sun, or snorkel and scuba dive.

Locals eat at tables set up on the road outside a late night restaurant in Osaka, Japan. The restaurant is lit up in lights and appears bright against the dark night sky.

Best for street food and nightlife

Tokyo doesn't nab all the superlatives when it comes to urban experiences. Osaka , Japan's third-largest city, is tops for street food: don't miss its signature dish, takoyaki (grilled octopus dumplings).

It also has the most dramatic of nightscapes: a dazzling display of LED lights, animated signage and flashing video screens along the canalside strip Dōtombori .

The city, Japan's oldest merchant center, has a pace, spirit and zest for life all of its own; its unofficial slogan is kuidaore (eat until you drop).

Planning tip: In addition to nightly accommodation fees, Osaka hotels will typically charge an accommodation tax that varies depending on the standard nightly rate.

Two hikers with large backpacks walk along a trail through thick forest in Kamikochi, Japan.

10. Kamikōchi

Best for mountain hikes

One of Japan's most stunning natural vistas, Kamikōchi is a highland river valley enveloped by the soaring peaks of the Northern Japan Alps .

Easy day hikes are possible along the Azusa-gawa, following the pristine river through tranquil forests of willow, larch and elm.

The birthplace of Japanese alpinism, Kamikōchi is also the gateway for more challenging treks up some of the country's tallest mountains, such as Yari-ga-take (3180m/10,433ft). Private cars are banned from Kamikōchi, which lessens the impact of the crowds.
