Princess Alaska cruise dinner food menu on my cruise ⚓ cruise food ⚓ cruise tips

So will there be Alaska-specific food on your Princess cruise to Alaska?!

Yes, as part of the Alaska cruise experience, Alaska-specialty food is served.

If you don’t like seafood, will there be anything for you to eat?!

While Alaska’s specialty food is seafood, the cruise food during an Alaska cruise won’t be only Alaska food.

There will be normal western/American food too. There is almost always some sort of pasta. There is almost always Indian food as well.

So even if you don’t like seafood, you won’t starve on a cruise to Alaska.

In general on a cruise, you will get free food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

There are “ specialty restaurants ” on Princess cruise ships for which there is an added fee.

There is a “ juice bar ” for extra health and wellness drinks for which there is an added fee.

But there are always free food options for every meal, plus snacks in between meals.

You can get pizza any time , and you can get ice cream any time during the day for free.

There are “ premium desserts ” on Princess cruise ships for which there is an added fee, but there are always free dessert options, both in the main dining room and the buffet.

There are also many other food choices that you can get almost any time throughout the day too.

There’s the buffet that you can eat at during your cruise for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is free.

You can also go to one of the main dining rooms for dinner. This is free. (There are some “specialty” items in the dining room as well for which there is a fee, but it’s not necessary to pay for regular dinner food.)

You can also go to at least one of the dining rooms for breakfast and lunch. This is free. (Lunch in dining room might only be available on sea days.)

As far as I could tell, the Alaska specific food items were served at dinner.

I never saw any buffet food labeled specifically as “Alaskan” but there were usually (always?) seafood choices, so I’m guessing there was almost always some sort of food that was Alaska-inspired that was served as part of the dinner buffet, even if it’s not noted in that way.

But if you want the best Alaska dinner experience, you want to go to a main dining room!

See below for a day-by-day dinner menu from an Alaska cruise!

Also below is how to see the dinner menu once you are on your cruise.

Cruise food during an Alaska cruise on a Princess cruise ship

Food on your Alaska cruise may vary, but just to give you an idea, here is the dinner menu from the main dining room dinner on my cruise, day by day!

I did an Alaska cruise on a Princess cruise ship May 2023. I was on the Sapphire Princess. The cruise started at the end of April.

When you go to the dining room for dinner and receive the menu, local Alaska cuisine is also marked as “local eats Alaska flavors” so look for a special symbol for that too!

Below are screenshots from the Princess app, and the Alaska food is not specifically marked.

Some do say it’s “Alaskan” but there is also other Alaska-inspired food that’s not necessarily called “Alaskan” in its name. (And there are some menu items that if it’s not listed as “Alaskan” I’m not sure if it is Alaskan-inspired! Some are more obvious than others.)

Day 1: Vancouver embarkation day menu, April 29

Alaska-inspired dinner food on a Princess cruise to Alaska includes house-made gravlax of wild Alaskan salmon, pan-fried Alaskan cod, Bering seafood stew, Alaskan ale-braised short ribs, and seared wild Alaskan sockeye salmon.

Alaska-inspired desserts on a Princess cruise to Alaska includes warm Alaskan blueberry cobbler and gelato baked Alaska.

Alaska-inspired dinner food on a Princess cruise to Alaska includes hot smoked Alaskan steelhead salmon cocktail, warm Alaskan shrimp and spinach dip, fishermans clam chowder, parmesan and panko baked cod, vermouth-steamed clams with shrimp, and seared wild Alaskan sockeye salmon orange dill gremolata.

Day 7: Skagway port day, May 5

The menu never showed up on the app for me so I didn’t get any screenshots.

I went down to see the paper version of the menu and it had “local eats Hawaii flavors” printed down at the bottom.

But I did see seared wild Alaskan sockeye salmon on the menu.

Although I didn’t get a screenshot of it, I am assuming that filet mignon and lobster tail was available for an additional fee on this formal night as well.

How to see the dinner menu on your cruise

You’ll be able to see the dinner menu once you are on your cruise.

You can use the Princess app to see the menu for that evening.

how to see dinner menu on princess cruise. princess app

👆 Next screen: Go to “explore dining options”

how to see dinner menu on princess cruise. princess app

The Princess app is how you will choose your cruise boarding time and look for cruise entertainment, including Alaska-specific cruise activities.

The Princess app is also how you can make reservations in one of the main dining rooms.

You can make reservations before you get on the cruise ship.

how to see make dinner reservations on princess cruise. princess app. main dining room dinner reservations

👆 You will choose the dining room that you want to make a dinner reservation for. You will have the option of choosing a private table or a shared table, if available. There are limited spots available for each time slot.

how to see make dinner reservations on princess cruise. princess app. main dining room dinner reservations

👆 When you go to “dine my way” you may also see an option to do a quick booking for the same time every night, instead of having to individually make a reservation for each day.

If you’re making dining reservations far in advance, you’ll want to check back once it gets closer to your cruise (and once you are on your cruise) to see that your dining time hasn’t changed.

Sometimes they will change it on you, and you won’t be notified about the change.

You can also go to the main dining room without a reservation.

You might need to wait for a table to open up.

How long you need to wait will just depend on how many people are having dinner at the time you go.

You can think of it as though you are going to a regular restaurant.

I went to the main dining room twice during my Alaska cruise.

Both times were after 8pm and without reservations.

I was hoping it would be less busy at that time.

The first dining room dinner was on the first day of the cruise.

While I was seated relatively quickly, I feel like it took a bit of time for my order to be taken, and it seemed like food took a little longer to come out.

The second dining room dinner was in the middle of the cruise, not a formal night.

I was seated relatively quickly, my order was taken relatively quickly, and the food came out relatively quickly.

I would also imagine formal nights would be more busy.

Once you are on the cruise ship, you can also use the TV in your room to see the dinner menu.

how to see dinner menu on princess cruise. stateroom tv in cabin room on princess cruise

Once you are on your cruise ship, you can also go down to the dining room and see the menu for that evening posted out in front.

And that’s to give you an idea of what type of food might be on your Alaska cruise!

I was on a Princess cruise to Alaska in April and May 2023. Your experience may vary!

A bunch of menus with a Princess cruise ship in the foreground and text that reads: Princess Dinner Menus 2024

Introduction

Are you booked on a Princess cruise or considering one in 2024? Are you looking for an idea of what your dinners will be like? Here are the newest dinner menus for Princess cruises up to 10 days. Keep in mind that these menus haven’t been rolled out to every ship yet and that some menu items do vary depending on the specific ship and itinerary. Also, the menus won’t always be presented in this exact order. But these should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. Happy cruising! And eating!

These menus are served in the main dining rooms and all items are included in your cruise fare unless otherwise noted.

Today’s Cruising Pro Tip:

Never purchase cruise/travel insurance through Princess. You’ll pay more and get less than if you purchase it on your own. Use a site like  TravelInsurance.com * to compare rates and plans and get exactly what you want for the least amount of money. Simply enter your travel dates, total travel cost, and a few basic pieces of information about yourself and see a list of quotes to compare. Savings can be significant and mean more to spend onboard, at port, or on another cruise!

And with that…

Class Dismissed.

Don’t forget to PIN these menus so you can refer back to them later!

Sun Princess. It will vary some depending on the specific ship and itinerary, but will be very similar to these.

Where did all the Favorites go? Can you still order them? I love their French onion soup and will be very disappointed if that is no longer available. Thanks for sharing the menus!

How many restaurants are on Princess Discovery?

Curious about the eateries based on Princess Discovery? Find out with our extensive guide!

Book Princess Cruises Now

The renowned cruise ship Princess Discovery is lauded for its luxurious accommodations, exquisite dining options, and breathtaking surroundings. As visitors board Princess Discovery, they are ready for a culinary adventure unlike anything they have ever experienced. In this comprehensive tour, we delve into the variety of restaurants that line Princess Discovery's decks, each with a unique vibe and delectable menu.

Princess Discovery has a diverse selection of culinary options to cater to the many interests and preferences of its patrons, ranging from casual cafés to upscale dining venues. Through a culinary expedition, we will all come to know the wide variety of foods that are served on Princess Discovery's decks .

Princess Discovery's Decks:

International café (deck 5).

The International Café is the place to go; it's open 24 hours a day. This establishment offers sandwiches, cookies, and other snacks all day long in addition to pastries and sandwiches for breakfast. The International Café is a coffee shop owned by Princess Cruises . Here you can receive your preferred lattes, cappuccinos, and other espresso-based drinks. Unless you have a Princess Cruises drink plan, these will cost extra.

The Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan Main Dining Rooms

These three restaurants, which are located on Decks 6 and 5, comprise Discovery Princess's main dining rooms. Skagway and Juneau provide anytime dining, while the stern-mounted Ketchikan Dining Room on Deck 6 serves dinner in two typical sittings: early and late. Lunch is offered sit-down in one or more of the port's dining rooms on sea days. There's also breakfast on offer. With the exception of the Ketchikan Dining Room, which faces the aft and is a touch finer, all three restaurants feature the same menus and décor. The menus are refreshed every day, and popular products like steak, salmon, and chicken are located in the "Always Available" area on the left side of the page.

Gigi’s Pizzeria (Deck 7)

Everyone's favorite casual dining establishment on Discovery Princess is probably Gigi's Pizzeria. This sit-down restaurant serves delectable gourmet pizzas day and night and is open every day from 11:30 am to 10 pm. You may even watch the cooks prepare your own pie in the open kitchen. There are also a few salads, calzones, soups, and desserts on the menu. You can't go wrong with the distinctive pizza selections or the more traditional choices like pepperoni and margherita. You'll understand why Princess is known for serving the greatest pizza at sea after just one mouthful!

World Fresh Marketplace

To evenly disperse customers, the casual buffet restaurant on board the Discovery Princess, World Fresh Marketplace, is separated into many sections. There's always something for everyone and it never seems too crowded because so many different cuisines are represented. The venue's non-American lunch and supper fare is bold with flavor and ingredients, and the ship's congee, an Asian-style rice porridge, is the finest we've had on a ship in a long time. When Discovery Princess is in Alaska, Alaskan fish bowls are available every day throughout the Alaskan season at the World Fresh Marketplace. A few dishes to try are steelhead salmon carpaccio, king salmon with razor clams, and Alaskan crab cakes.

Bistro Sur La Mer

This beautifully furnished restaurant on Deck 7 is the place to go if you like French cuisine. You may savor a range of traditional meals like filet mignon, escargots, and lobster bisque, as well as entrees like red snapper and enormous scallops, at the reasonable price of $29 per person. This is a great opportunity to be adventurous and try something new, even though there are moments when the experience is marred by bleed-through noise from the Piazza Atrium below.

Salty Dog Gastropub

The main attractions here are the burgers and informal dining. The menu's highlight is the Ernesto Burger, created in collaboration with famous chef Ernesto Uchimura. Among the worthy menu items are the fried chicken sandwich, the wild mushroom saute, and the poutine (which, while not very good in Quebec, is nonetheless among the best versions south of the border). The letdown? The beer menu is limited and lacks creativity; a gastropub would not serve Budweiser, Heineken, or Sierra Nevada.

Specialty Bars and Lounges

A visit to one of Princess Discovery's specialty bars or lounges, where guests can savor expertly mixed cocktails, fine wines, and premium spirits, would round out any gastronomic adventure. After a long day of traveling, these locations—which range from elegant cocktail lounges to warm wine bars—offer the ideal atmosphere for relaxing and catching up with friends. Any of Princess Discovery's lounges and bars, which frequently offer live entertainment and music, might provide a memorable night at sea.

Whether indulging in fine cuisine, exploring novel experiences, or simply spending quality time with loved ones, guests on Princess Discovery can consistently anticipate a fantastic culinary adventure.

The best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler

Whether you're in it for the sightseeing, wildlife spotting or relaxing among glaciers, there's an Alaska cruise for you

Lauren Dana

Alaska is among the most popular summer vacation destinations since it’s (pretty much) the only time of year the state offers warm, sunny weather and hours of extra daylight (on my summer 2022 trip here, I remember looking at my iPhone and being surprised that the sun still hadn’t set by 9pm!). In my opinion, cruising is, by far, the best way to experience the massive state and all the beauty it has to offer since you won’t need to drive or hop on a handful of flights; plus, you’ll only need to unpack once! (The views, of course, are just the icing on the proverbial cake.)

As you scroll through our top picks for the best Alaska cruises, it’s worth noting that most options include scenic cruising through Alaska’s Inside Passage, a 500-mile-long coastal route world-renowned for its wildlife, glaciers and postcard-worthy scenery. (I’ll never forget the awe I felt when watching a whale breach from the 11th deck of my cruise ship or the glacier-studded views I ogled from the comfort of my private balcony.)

Below, I’ve broken down the best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler, including budget-conscious cruisers, adventure-seekers and luxury lovers alike.

Best Alaska cruises

Holland America Line’s Alaskan Explorer

1.  Holland America Line’s Alaskan Explorer

Best overall experience.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip) Sailing dates: May through September 2024

I was fortunate enough to cruise Alaska with Holland America back in August 2022 aboard the line’s uber-popular, aptly named Alaskan Explorer itinerary. Cruising roundtrip from Seattle, the seven-day journey features scenic cruising through Stephens Passage before arriving in Juneau, where my sister and I embarked on my favorite shore excursion of the trip: A dog sledding adventure! The following day, we cruised through Glacier Bay before arriving at Icy Strait Point for a few hours, which we spent whale-watching—to this day, it is one of my most cherished travel memories. Afterward, we headed to Sitka, where we went rafting and spotted wildlife like puffins and adorable sea otters before wrapping up the adventure in the final two ports of call, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia.

The onboard offerings were equally impressive, with nightly live music and some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten (Holland America is the first cruise line to serve 100 percent fresh and certified sustainable Alaska seafood on board). Just this year, the line unveiled its Glacier Guarantee : Guests are guaranteed to visit a glacier during their sailing; otherwise, they’re entitled to a Future Cruise Credit equal to 15 percent of their cruise fare.

Celebrity Cruises’ Alaska Dawes Glacier

2.  Celebrity Cruises’ Alaska Dawes Glacier

Best upscale option.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip)

Sailing dates: May through August 2024

Celebrity Cruises offers an upscale onboard experience with plenty of chic hangout spaces, stylish restaurants and contemporary staterooms. For the first time, the spectacular 2019-era Celebrity Edge—known for its 29 restaurants bars and lounges plus innovative spaces like the Magic Carpet , which the line has deemed “the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform that reaches heights of 13 stories above sea level”—will homeport in Seattle. She’ll cruise to Alaska via the seven-night Alaska Dawes Glacier itinerary, including scenic sailing through Endicott Arms and the Inside Passage. As you can likely tell by its name, guests aboard this itinerary will cruise alongside the striking Dawes Glacier, which stands over 600 feet tall and can be further inspected via a thrilling shore excursion. Ports of call include Juneau, Skagway and Victoria (British Columbia).

Crystal’s Vancouver to Vancouver

3.  Crystal’s Vancouver to Vancouver

Best luxury cruise.

Cruises from: Vancouver (roundtrip) Sailing dates: July 2024

For a truly memorable Alaska sailing, splurge on Crystal’s seven-night Vancouver to Vancouver itinerary—and thank me later. As you can guess by its name, the 740-passenger Crystal Serenity will sail roundtrip from Vancouver, cruising through Canada’s glacier-studded Seymour Narrows before calling on Sitka and Skagway, respectively. Afterward, you’ll enjoy scenic cruising through the Endicott Arm fjord before one last port stop in Ketchikan. While in port, cruisers can embark on bucket-list-worthy excursions such as wildlife spotting tours, kayaking adventures and fishing. The on-board programming is equally impressive: All passengers, regardless of their room category, enjoy private butler service; Wi-Fi; a selection of wines, champagne, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages like water, soft drinks and specialty coffees; free gratuities; and one complimentary reservation to each of the two specialty dining restaurants, including the first and only Nobu at sea (yes, that Nobu).

Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic’s Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness

4.  Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic’s Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness

Best for wildlife spotting.

Cruises from: Juneau to Sitka and vice-versa Sailing dates: May through September 2024

Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have teamed up to offer a handful of one-of-a-kind Alaska sailings specially suited for true adventure-seekers. The Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness itinerary, which sails from Juneau to Sitka and vice-versa (depending on your desired sail date), invites cruisers to experience Alaska’s natural landscapes and wildlife up close and personal with guidance and unique insight from an onboard expedition team . Along the way, partake in adventures like hiking through forests, cruising around icebergs via Zodiac, or searching for puffins and mountain goats in Glacier Bay National Park. Little ones can also partake in the fun: Children and teens can learn more about Alaska’s landscapes and wildlife with the National Geographic Global Explorers family program. Cruisers will sail on one of two 100-person vessels, National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture, both offer a shallow draft that, per the website, allows the ships’ captains to “navigate the inner reaches and provide more intimate experiences.”

Alaskan Dream Cruises’ 2024 Ice of the Inside Passage

5.  Alaskan Dream Cruises’ 2024 Ice of the Inside Passage

Best small-ship option.

Cruises from: Sitka to Ketchikan

Sailing dates: May through August 2024 This brand-new itinerary from Indigenous-owned Alaskan Dreams Cruises is ideal for cruisers craving an authentic small-ship experience. The eight-day voyage departs from Sitka aboard the 49-passenger Baranof Dream. From there, you'll enjoy scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. It’s also worth noting that, because of the ship’s small size, guests can gain an up-close view of seven different glaciers, including Margerie, Grand Pacific, Mendenhall, Sawyer, South Sawyer and Dawes glaciers, plus a high-speed jet-boat excursion to LeConte Glacier.

After cruising Glacier Bay National Park, it’s off to Juneau, followed by more scenic sailing through the Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm fjords (the latter can be explored via kayak or skiff expedition). This itinerary is also unique since it includes a Kasaan stop where guests can immerse themselves in Alaska's native culture by visiting the Haida community. The final port of call, Ketchikan, is known as “The Salmon Capital of the World.”

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Flavors of Alaska

6.  Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Flavors of Alaska

Cruises from: Vancouver to Seward

Sailing dates: June 2024

Cruise the Last Frontier in style with Regent Seven Seas aboard the Seven Seas Explorer, which offers all-suite accommodations equipped with private balconies for soaking in the glacial views. While there are several Alaska itineraries to choose from, Flavors of Alaska , which sails from Vancouver to Seward, is among our favorites since it includes (pretty much) all of Alaska’s most popular ports of call, including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point, with Hubbard Glacier scenic cruising. As such, it’s an excellent choice for first-time visitors to Alaska. It’s also worth noting that this particular voyage offers up to 50 free excursions, including rainforest and glacier hikes, whale-watching adventures, kayaking and fishing. While this luxury cruise line isn’t cheap, it offers excellent value with numerous amenities already included in the price, such as specialty dining, transfers between the airport and ship, an open bar package, roundtrip air on domestic flights, gratuities and two-for-one fares.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

7.  Norwegian Cruise Line’s Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Best for families.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip) Sailing dates:  May through September 2024

Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for its casual, come-as-you-are atmosphere—for example, there are no set dining times—and breadth of activities and amenities. As such, it’s safe to say this mega-ship line is ideal for families of all ages. This summer, gather the family for an epic Alaska sailing aboard the aptly named Norwegian Bliss, which offers thrilling activities like go-kart racing and laser tag. The itinerary is equally impressive as the vessel itself: After setting sail from Seattle, it’s off to scenic Sitka. The following day, you’ll explore Juneau before scenic cruising through Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. Passengers will then visit Icy Strait Point (home to the state’s largest native Tlingit village, as well as awe-inspiring wildlife, including orcas and humpback whales, which, if you’re lucky, can be spotted straight from the ship). The final Alaskan port of call, Ketchikan, is renowned for its colorful Creek Street, a former red light district turned tourist attraction, where you can also spot salmon swimming upstream (and even the occasional otter or two). Before heading back to Seattle, you’ll visit Victoria, British Columbia, which just so happens to be one of my favorite ports of call thanks to its charming shops and restaurants coupled with its bustling food scene (fun fact: It’s home to the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada).

Viking Cruises’ Alaska & The Inside Passage

8.  Viking Cruises’ Alaska & The Inside Passage

Best adults-only.

Sailing dates: May through September 2024

Viking is renowned for its adults-only, all-inclusive cruises (think free spa access; Wi-Fi; one shore excursion per port; wine and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner; all-balcony accommodations). Cruisers aboard the line’s 11-day Alaska & The Inside Passage itinerary—where nobody is below the age of 18—enjoy visits to popular ports of call like Juneau, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, Skagway and Ketchikan, along with a stop in Valdez, a small fishing town known for its glaciers, waterfalls and scenic hiking trails, before disembarking in Seward, aka the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. The line is also known for its immersive shore excursions, including a visit to Saxman Native Village and animal encounters at the Alaska Sealife Center.

Royal Caribbean’s Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier

9.  Royal Caribbean’s Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier

Best budget option.

Cruises from: Seward to Vancouver

Royal Caribbean is known for its laid-back ambiance and bucket-list sailings aboard its mega-ship fleet, which offer something for everyone, be it water slides, skydiving simulators or escape rooms. With fares ranging from $299 to $625 depending on the date, the seven-night Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier aboard Radiance of the Seas—which offers completely complimentary activities like a rock climbing wall and Broadway-caliber entertainment, not to mention 11 dining options and several bars and lounges—is a great way to experience The Last Frontier without breaking the bank. After embarking in Seward, passengers will enjoy scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier, followed by port stops in Juneau, Skagway, Haines (famous for its majestic wildlife, including bears and eagles), Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. Before disembarking in Vancouver, travelers are in for one final treat: Scenic cruising through the Inside Passage.

Princess Cruises’ Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park)

10.  Princess Cruises’ Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park)

Best for foodies.

Culinary connoisseurs can sail to Alaska aboard Discovery Princess, which is among the newest Princess ships to cruise Alaska this season, and the Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park) is one for the books since it calls on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria (British Columbia), along with scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. Also, as part of the line’s “North to Alaska” programming, passengers can partake in unique culinary experiences, including Cook My Catch at the new specialty seafood restaurant, The Cach by Rudi. This unique offering allows cruisers to consume their very own fresh catch caught on a fishing excursion. Foodies can also partake in an onboard salmon cooking demonstration led by expert chefs, along with a four-course seafood feast at the Crab Shack, a lunch pop-up found in the World Fresh Marketplace.
