King Charles III and the Queen Consort are to pay their first official visit to Cardiff following the death of Her Majesty the Queen on Friday.

It will be the third of the couple's official engagements after attending ceremonies in Belfast and Edinburgh.

More details have now been confirmed by the King's spokesman, including that the new King will arrive in Wales by helicopter and be greeted by a 21-gun salute.

The King's spokesman also confirmed that he and the Queen Consort intend to meet members of the public at each of their stops in the Welsh capital.

Here's what we know so far.

1. Helicopter arrival and gun salute

His Majesty the King and the Queen Consort will arrive in Wales by helicopter, though the location of the helicopter arrival and timings have not been revealed.

The arrival of the King's helicopter will be marked by a 21-gun salute.

2. Llandaff Cathedral

His and Her Majesty's first engagement will be at Llandaff Cathedral, for a service to remember the life of Queen Elizabeth II.

The couple will be greeted at the cathedral by the Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan.

Prayers and a time for reflection will be held in the 12th century building for the King and Queen Consort alongside some of Wales' most senior clergy.

The Archbishop will give the address and the First Minister will be called upon to give a reading.

The National Service of Remembrance will be broadcast live on the BBC.

After the service has taken place, the King and the Queen Consort will undertake a short walkabout on Llandaff Green to meet with school children and members of the local community.

3. Motion of Condolence at the Senedd

The Royal couple will then visit the Senedd in Cardiff Bay.

They will be greeted by the First Minister Mark Drakeford and Presiding Officer Elin Jones before moving into the Senedd's debating chamber where the First Minister will stand to propose the Motion of Condolence.

King Charles III will stand to reply.

King Charles III and The Queen Consort will also receive a Motion of Condolence.

After the session has taken place, Their Majesties will view condolence messages before meeeting Members of the Youth Parliament.

Upon departure, the King and Queen Consort will meet members of the public.

4. Visit to Cardiff Castle

A reception will then take place at Cardiff Castle where the King will hold a private audience with Mark Drakeford and the Presiding Officer of the Senedd, Elin Jones.

The public are invited to line the route to welcome the King and Queen Consort as they approach Cardiff Castle in the afternoon, and to wave goodbye as they depart.

The motorcade will drive along St Mary Street enroute to the castle and it is expected large crowds will gather in advance of their arrival.

The Welsh Government says the public are welcome to gather in the grounds of the castle, where the King and Queen Consort are expected to meet with the crowds after the reception, but entry will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The opening time for public entry through the castle's main gate is yet to be decided, but very long queues are expected to start building from early in the day.

Only the first 2,000 people will be able to attend the event in the Castle, the Welsh Government says.

5. Meeting with charities

After receiving the First Minister and the Presiding Officer at the castle, the King and Queen Consort proceed to the castle's Banqueting Hall where they will join guests including representatives of Royal Patronages and Members of Faith Communities at a reception.

It is expected that the King's visit to Wales' capital city will end with the King and the Queen Consort greeting members of the public in the castle grounds before departing.

The visit comes after Charles III was officially proclaimed as King in Wales on Sunday at an event at Cardiff Castle.

On the same day, William, the new Prince of Wales spoke of his "affection" for Wales and how it will be an "honour" to serve the Welsh people.

Prince William also spoke with the First Minister over the phone on Sunday, thanking him for his "fitting tribute" to his grandmother, following her death.

He revealed in the telephone conversation that he would be travelling to the country "at the earliest opportunity" to meet Mark Drakeford and other political leaders in person.

A statement from Kensington Palace said: "HRH expressed his and The Princess of Wales's honour in being asked by His Majesty The King to serve the Welsh people.

"They will do so with humility and great respect.

"The prince acknowledged his and the princess's deep affection for Wales, having made their first family home in Anglesey including during the earliest months of Prince George's life.

"The prince and princess will spend the months and years ahead deepening their relationship with communities across Wales.

"They want to do their part to support the aspirations of the Welsh people and to shine a spotlight on both the challenges and opportunities in front of them.

"The prince and princess look forward to celebrating Wales' proud history and traditions as well as a future that is full of promise.

"They will seek to live up to the proud contribution that members of the royal family have made in years past."

Charles III was originally created the Prince of Wales by the Queen when he was just nine years old, with the title belonging to him for more than 64 years.

The title of Prince of Wales has long been used for heirs to the throne but it is not an automatic right and is the choice of the sovereign to award it.

Catherine, has become the first person since Diana, Princess of Wales to use the title.

Tributes to the Queen were made by politicians during a special session of the Senedd on Sunday . Mark Drakeford said that growing democracy in Wales will be a lasting legacy of the Queen.

"We must look forward and use the strength we have here in this democratic forum of Wales to fashion that future, by drawing inspiration from those who have helped to make us what we are."

Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies praised the Queen's "unique gift of being able to focus on you as the individual, have you at the centre of that conversation and make you feel that you're the person, the only person, talking to her in that room."

Following Her Majesty death, books of condolence have now been opened across Wales including one at City Hall by Council leader Huw Thomas.

An online book of condolence is available on the Royal Family's website .

Prince of Wales

King Charles and the Queen Consort will make their first visit to Wales on Friday, with thousands expected to join the crowds at Cardiff Castle.

The royal couple will attend a remembrance service for Queen Elizabeth at Llandaff Cathedral, where they will be greeted by the Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan. They will also meet schoolchildren and members of the local community.

Following a motion of condolence at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, the King will then hold a private audience with the First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, at Cardiff Castle, where the first 2,000 people in the queue will be allowed entry.

Charles had his investiture as Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle in North Wales in 1969.

"It was the big, formal introduction of Charles as this symbol - if you like - of Wales," says Dr Mari Wiliam, lecturer in modern history at Bangor University.

"Opinion polls from the late 1960s show about 70% to 80% approval of Charles being invested as Prince of Wales - but there were also very vocal protests."

"I think in Welsh history we tend to focus a lot on the protest against Charles and not so much on how he tried to integrate himself with Wales and Welsh culture," she added.

Caernarfon castle

As part of his preparations, King Charles spent 10 weeks studying Welsh language and history at Aberystwyth University.

Dr Rhodri Llwyd Morgan, director of Welsh language and culture at the university, told Sky News that King Charles's time there was quite intensive.

He said: "You can see from his timetable - they were quite senior academic members of staff who were putting him through his paces in terms of Welsh literature, the Welsh language, Welsh history and they certainly made great progress with the young Charles."

Campaigns against the role of Prince of Wales

The royal title of the Prince of Wales dates back to England conquering the nation in the 13th century - and there have long been campaigns against the role, and for Welsh independence.

In Caernarfon, there is a mix of opinion about Charles ascending to the throne. "I'm ambivalent," Richard Roberts told Sky News.

"I was 13 in 1969 when the investiture took place here and it was in the age when we started to question politics and the situation of Wales within the British Isles, so I'm quite ambivalent."

I ask whether he'll support Charles as King?

"No, not really, because I feel that the establishment does not respect my Wales," he replied.

But others in the town are in full support. Janine Brown said: "I was very upset about the passing of the Queen, she had been in our lives for such a long time and I'm a big fan of the Queen and the Royal Family."

"I'm glad that he's got his opportunity to become King, it's as it should be, obviously in sad circumstances but I think he'll make a good King," she added.

'I welcome the King'

James Cook, who works in a cafe on the high street, thinks the people of Wales will support Charles. He said: "It's a role he's been looking to take over for many years.

"I sympathise with the loss of Her Majesty but I welcome the King. He's always had the role of the Prince of Wales - I think he has got the support [of the people of Wales]."

A survey by Cardiff University found 55% of people support having a monarchy, but 28% would rather have an elected head of state.

Dr Marion Loeffler, reader in Welsh history at Cardiff University, says the visit to Cardiff will be an important milestone.

"Not only for those who support the monarchy in Wales, but also for those who stand on the sidelines who are undecided and want to see how King Charles is going to engage with us here in Wales.

"Whether the reign of King Charles will strengthen or weaken the Welsh independence movement will depend very much on how he relates to the Welsh people and I would say negotiation, caution and listening to the people is very much the order of the day."

Prince Harry and Meghan visit Nigeria, where the duchess hints at her heritage with students: "I see myself in all of you"

By Charlie D'Agata

Updated on: May 10, 2024 / 10:40 AM EDT / CBS News

Their first trip to Nigeria together might have been called a mini royal tour, but for the fact that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, haven't been "working royals" for a few years.

The couple — now California residents — received a warm welcome to the massive African nation on Friday. They were gifted traditional Nigerian necklaces of wooden beads and then treated to a dance routine by students at their first stop, the Lightway Academy in the sprawling capital city of Abuja.

There, Harry addressed one of his biggest causes: mental health.

"If you take anything away from today, just know that mental health affects every single person," he told the students. "The more you talk about it, the more you can kick stigma away."

Their visit to the West African country takes on added meaning for Meghan, who not long ago said on her Archetypes podcast that a genealogy test had revealed she's "43% Nigerian." The couple have both referenced her Nigerian descent since that revelation, and Meghan voiced her hope to "dig deeper" into her roots.

"My daughter Lili looked at me and said she could see her reflection in my eyes, and said, 'Mama, I see me in you and you in me,'" she told the students in Abuja on Friday.

"As I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well," she added, drawing a round of applause from the crowd.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Visit Nigeria - Day 1

Harry and Meghan are in Nigeria at the invitation of the country's military, visiting to discuss the future work of the prince's Invictus Games Foundation. The charity helps wounded servicemembers and veterans through sport. Nigeria has a similar program and collaborates with Invictus.

The visit to Africa comes just days after Prince Harry was in London — on his own — to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. The stop in his old hometown prompted a flurry of speculation about a possible reconciliation with the rest of his royal family in Britain.

But it wasn't to be . He neither met with his brother, Prince William , nor his father, King Charles III.

At one point, the father and son were a mere two miles from each other, attending separate events. According to a statement from the Duke of Sussex, a meeting was unfortunately not possible due to "his Majesty's full program" on the day. It added that Harry hoped to see his father again soon.

King Charles is currently undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, but he has resumed some of his public duties , saying this week that he'd, "been allowed out of his cage."

Harry and Meghan were to wrap up their Nigerian tour on Sunday, following a cultural reception and charity polo match for wounded war veterans.

King Charles III is due to make his first visit to Wales with the Queen Consort on Friday, 16 September following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The visit, which will take place in Cardiff, will be the couple' third official engagement after attending ceremonies in Belfast and Edinburgh.

As part of the visit, the new King will be visiting Llandaff Cathedral for a remembrance service for Queen Elizabeth II, followed by a motion of condolence at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. A reception service will then take place at Cardiff Castle where the King will hold a private audience with Mark Drakeford and the Presiding Officer of the Senedd, Elin Jones.

Preparations for the event are already underway , with workers out in the Llandaff area preparing it for the visit. The day after the Queen's death a notice was put outside the cathedral announcing that it had closed until further notice in order to prepare for the service. The plan for the day is as follows.

National Service of Remembrance at Llandaff Cathedral

The King and Queen Consort will be greeted at Llandaff Cathedral Cathedral by the Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan. A Service of Prayer and Reflection for the Life of The Queen will be led by the Dean. The Archbishop will give the address and the First Minister will be called upon to give a reading.

The Bishop of Llandaff and Interfaith leaders will lead the prayers. After the Service has taken place, the King and Queen Consort will undertake a short walkabout on Llandaff Green to meet with school children and members of the local community. Cardiff Council has advised people to plan ahead as parking at Llandaff is expected to be difficult, with several road closures and parking restrictions in place.

Motion of Condolence at the Senedd

The couple will then travel to the Senedd to receive a Motion of Condolence, where they will be greeted by The Llywydd and First Minister. They will then process into the Siambr, (the Senedd's debating chamber), accompanied by the First Minister and party leaders.

The First Minister will stand to propose the Motion of Condolence, the King will stand to reply and the Llywdd will close the session. After the session has taken place, the King and Queen consort will view condolence messages in the Cwrt Area and meet Members of the Youth Parliament. They will greet Senedd Members in the Neuadd and , upon departure, will meet members of the public.

Cardiff Castle

For their third engagement of the day, the King and Queen Consort will head to Cardiff Castle, where the King is expected to receive the First Minister of Wales and the Presiding Officer. The King and the Queen Consort will be met by the First Minister and Llywydd and will then proceed to the Banqueting Hall where they will join guests including representatives of Royal Patronages and Members of Faith Communities at a reception.

Cardiff Council has said that the public are invited to line the route to welcome the Royal Party as it approaches Cardiff Castle in the afternoon and to wave goodbye as they depart. The motorcade will drive along St Mary Street en route to the Castle and it is expected large crowds will gather in advance of their arrival. Members of the public will also be welcomed into the grounds of Cardiff Castle to see the King and Queen Consort as they take part in their final engagement of the day.

Entry to the castle grounds will be on a first come first served basis and those planning to attend are asked to avoid bringing large and non-essential bags which will require searching and could slow down entry. The opening time for public entry through the Castle's main gate is yet to be decided, however, the council is advising people to expect very long queues from early in the day and say not everybody will be able to be accommodated into the castle grounds.

"Our advice is to plan ahead, dress for the weather, bring plenty of water, prepare for long periods of standing, expect crowds and watch out for those around you and with you. Books of Condolence remain open, 9am to 5pm daily, at City Hall in Cardiff. The books will remain open until 5pm on Monday, September 19, the day of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II's State Funeral. Members of the public are welcome to leave floral tributes on the lawned areas on either side of City Hall's main entrance. The public are asked to remove and take home any plastic wrapping on the flowers they are placing at City Hall", the announcement from Cardiff Council said.

Roads have been closed in the area in preparation, with residents on some streets being told that they would have to move their cars as work is carried out. The Royals of Ohio are back this week with more drama, fashion and Amish country

royal visit cardiff times

Just a week after premiering, Hulu’s Columbus-based series "Royal Rules of Ohio" garnered some widespread attention and reviews as audiences get familiar with the Agyekum sister’s life in Columbus.

The second drama-filled episode dives into conflict with relatives, more criticism from the ‘aunties’ and pressure to uphold the family’s real estate business.

The sisters are scolded for showing up late to the "Abadinto" or baby naming ceremony in the opening scene and are told not to confront problematic family members in public. Meanwhile, Auntie Abigail furthers her plot to become an official member of the Agyekum family with attempts to get her son to marry Brenda.

Through this, viewers get to learn the second rule to behave as royals: Royal Rule number 2: Never let your crown tilt.

How does Columbus feature in episode 2 of "Royals Rules?"

Yet another attractive hotspot in Columbus is showcased as the mother, Delali Agyekum is seen getting lunch with her friends at The Royce. Though the restaurant closed in June 2023, viewers get a taste of the dining scene at Polaris Fashion Place.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Here, Delali worries her daughters are losing touch with their Ghanaian roots after failing to keep remain civil toward an estranged cousin and requesting the family hire a chef to keep meals in the house.

Although Brenda and Nana are able to escape family pressure in this episode, Thelma remained stuck with her father, Akili Bobo on a trip around Columbus to visit properties the family owns through their real estate business.

And for those still wondering, "What is there to do in Ohio other than eat?" one of the self-proclaimed "Ohio Hotties," Nana, proves the Amish Country farmlands to be a perfect spot for a secret date.

The pair strolled through the cornfields of a farm in Amish Country to escape family and spend time with her "situationship" Michael. Although Brenda says the date resembles a scene from "Nightmare on Elm Street," the unconventional outing gives viewers an opportunity to experience the unique lifestyle Ohio has to offer.

As the series begins to get its footing, viewers can expect the series to feature more life outside of all around Ohio as the sisters prepare to visit Ohio University in the next episode.

Who are the royal Agyekum family?

Thelma , 27,  Nana , 25 and  Brenda Agyekum, 23, are the children of Yaw Owusu Agyekum, also known as Akili Bobo, a wealthy  businessman  and real-estate investor, and Delali Agyekum, a  registered nurse .

Thelma graduated from Ohio University with a degree in pre-physical therapy and owns  Tely Fitness LLC . She is also a licensed realtor in Ohio for  e-Merge Real Estate .

Nana also graduated from Ohio University with a degree in business administration. She currently attends drama school while also working as a patient-care coordinator for the family’s home-health company,  New Millenium Home Health Care.

Brenda graduated from Kent State University with a degree in criminology and justice studies and is a certified victim’s advocate.

Yaw was born in Amakom, Ghana, a suburb in the Ashanti Region of Kumasi. He graduated from Prempeh College in Kumasi and has degrees in nursing and respiratory therapy from the United States.

The new reality series is meant to portray how the three sisters in their 20s balance rules as descendants of Ghanaian royals with the lavish life in Columbus.

Recap: 'Royal Rules of Ohio' highlights lavish Columbus life, Ghanaian culture in ep. 1

Where to watch the "Royal Rules of Ohio"

"Royal Rules of Ohio" can be watched on Freeform and Hulu.

New episodes will continue to air every Wednesday on Hulu. The season is set to conclude June 26th.

Canada Banff Mountain Landscape

The Best Time To Visit Banff

Discover the ideal weather and month to travel to banff.

By Meena Thiruvengadam | Published on May 17, 2024

The Canadian section of the Pacific Northwest is heralded for its rugged shorelines, charming seaside towns and the dazzling skyscrapers of Vancouver. The region shines during the summer, when the weather is warm and the skies are often blue — and there's no better way to experience the sun-dappled joy than by land and sea.

To get a deeper feel for this part of western Canada, pair your Vancouver cruise with a visit to Banff National Park in Alberta. Canada's oldest national park is located in the scenic Rocky Mountains. Arguably the best time to visit Banff is also the best time to set sail from Vancouver, which makes extending your vacation to include this beautiful gem pretty easy. The drive from Vancouver to Banff takes about 10 hours, but you can break up your sure-to-be-unforgettable road trip with stops at lovely wineries and historic rail towns as you make your way past lush green fields and into the Rockies. Don't have time to spare on a journey by car? You can fly from Vancouver International Airport to Calgary International Airport in less than two hours. From Calgary, it's about an hour-and-a-half drive to Banff.

Need more proof points? Here are the five reasons why the best time to visit Banff National Park may be summertime, before or after a cruise out of Vancouver.

Canada Banff Mountain Landscape

1. The Lure Of Mild Temps

Summer is both prime time for visiting Banff National Park and peak Alaska cruise season. Many of these sailings begin in Vancouver , which puts you just a scenic one-day road trip or an easy flight and a quick drive away from Banff. In Banff, you can enjoy crystal-clear glacial lakes, scenic hikes and long bike rides before relaxing at sea. Or celebrate the end of a magnificent journey along the Alaskan coast with cozy cabin visits and endless mountain views.

The best time to visit Banff for comfortable temperatures is mid to late summer. Average July and August highs hover around 73 and 72 degrees, respectively. That's far more comfortable than the 25-degree highs you'll encounter on average in January. Temperatures in Banff tend to stay above freezing until October, and July and August tend to draw vacationers in search of mild conditions, cool breezes and occasional rain showers that provide a moody backdrop for a soak in the historic Banff Upper Hot Springs.

2.Abundant Outdoor Adventures

Banff rolls out the summer welcome mat in June with several events cheering the mountain snow's transition to slush and the thawing of the lakes. This is a town that embraces the changing of the seasons and knows how to make the most of a short — but spectacular — summer.

If you're a hiker or mountain biker, the best time to visit Banff National Park is between June and August. Lower-elevation routes are generally clear of snow by then. Note that at higher elevations, snow may not melt until July. Difficult hikes and multiday treks are ideal for Banff's long August days, before the snow returns around November.

July and August are the best times to visit Banff if you want to see its picturesque blue-green lakes at their most vibrant. This is also the best point in the year for kayaking, boating, canoeing, fly-fishing and paddling.

Lakes in the area begin to freeze in October, around the time cruise season wraps up in Vancouver. Lake Louise and Lake Minnewanka are among those that freeze solid during the wintertime, transforming into ice rinks and winter wonderlands. By the time skiers pack up and the lakes thaw, it's usually May or June.

3. Wondrous Wildflowers And Sumptuous Salmon

For peak wildflowers, the best time to visit Banff is from early July through mid-August before or after your summer cruise. If your schedule is flexible, monitor weather conditions in the area to time your trip for maximum blooms. Warmer winter temperatures may result in earlier blooms, while dry weather can cause seasonal flowers to wilt early. If you're looking for wildflower views without a long bike ride or hike, take a seat on the Banff Gondola and delight in a scenic ride up Sulphur Mountain to a multi-level indoor/outdoor observation deck, where you can admire views of the half-dozen flower-filled mountains that surround you. There may be no better place for a picnic — or at least a coffee in the sunshine — on a summer day.

This is also a good time of year to fish for salmon, trout and grayling. While you can fish year-round in Banff, you'll need to plan your fishing trip for between June and September to fish for the salmon that migrate through these waterways each year. Looking to reel in rainbow trout, brown trout or arctic grayling? The best time of year to visit Banff for these species is between May and October.

4. Small-Town Charm For Days

Banff is a small town that oozes charm. Spend your evenings relishing local takes on cuisine from around the world — you might tuck into biryani one night and Korean fried chicken another. Or opt for sushi, pub food, tacos or vegan chicken and waffles.

Got a sweet tooth? Enjoy a bear-claw pastry while strolling along Banff Avenue, the town's main thoroughfare where you can shop for treasures at one-of-a-kind vintage spots, peruse local art and pick up jewelry made by resident artisans. What's more, you can explore Native history at the fascinating Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum, including a collection of paintings created as an ode to the Rocky Mountains. When you're ready for a rest, visit one of the avenue's bars and sip on gin or whisky distilled with pure glacial water or a refreshing mocktail — and don't leave town without picking up some local fudge and maple syrup.

5. A Colorful End-Of-Summer — And Smaller Crowds

Lots of visitors visit Banff during the warm summer months. Wait until September, toward the end of Vancouver cruise season, for lighter crowds and the chance to experience a unique phenomenon: coniferous larch trees just before shedding their needles. Like leaves , larch tree needles change colors before falling to the earth. From mid-September through late October, they turn a vibrant golden color that makes them appear to glow from within, and the show they put on alone is worth the drive to Banff before or after a cruise to Alaska .

Banff, Canada shines in every season. But if you're looking for the best opportunities for hiking, biking, admiring glistening lakes and taking in outdoor concerts, there's no better time to visit Banff than before or after your cruise from Vancouver .
