Football Fantasy

I enjoy the local news apart from the NUFC section which daily invents headlines in relation to the takeover. Headlines such as ‘Owners not fazed by Qatari objection’, where does this come from as the owners have never said anything, this is pure fantasy. Last week we had Pochettino in the frame for manager and to back this up Ossie Ardilles is asked if he knows anything. He says he knows nothing and even if he did he wouldn’t say anything. This is newsworthy? Today the Pochettino story is old hat so the new headline is that Rafa is on his way back. To quote from an excellent article in The Mag this reporting is nothing short of shameless

Still annoying

This is my goto app for local sport but it’s getting worse and worse stories won’t load and the live section is just a complete waste of time. The pointless advertising loads very quickly but the rest of the feed isn’t visible unless it’s loaded 7 times if your lucky. If they are paying a company to build this for them then get the money back. Awful job done for a good local newspaper.

Unfit for purpose

Where to start!? Clicking on a banner takes you to the headline of an article, no actual article, or anything other than adverts. Once one has opened between 2 and 4 articles the app doesn’t respond when clicking on another one. The app has to be closed and reopened. Frequently, articles which have been published do not appear in the app. Or they appear then rapidly disappear, no amount of refreshing or closing and reopening the app seems to make any difference. The comments need to be monitored properly. There is a myriad of problems relating to the deletion of comments, posting issues, replies. The app is probably a bigger embarrassment than the publication itself. Which in itself is an undesirably achievement.

LONDON (AP) — Before Emperor Naruhito of Japan hopped into a horse-drawn carriage with King Charles III , laid a wreath at Westminster Abbey or toured one of Britain’s premier biomedical research institutes, he kicked off his trip to the U.K. by visiting a site that has special meaning for him: The Thames Barrier.

While the massive flood control gates on the River Thames don’t top most lists of must-see tourist sights, the stopover underscored the emperor’s fascination with the waterway that is the throbbing heart of London.

That interest was born 40 years ago when Naruhito studied 18th-century commerce on the river as a graduate student at the University of Oxford. But those two years, chronicled in his memoir “The Thames and I,” also forged a special fondness for Britain and its people. The future emperor got his first chance to live outside the palace walls, marveling at the kindness of strangers who rushed to help when he dropped his purse, scattering coins across a shop floor, and experiencing traditions like the great British pub crawl.

“It would be impossible in Japan to go to a place where hardly anyone would know who I was,’’ Naruhito wrote. “It is really important and precious to have the opportunity to be able to go privately at one’s own pace where one wants.’’

The visit came at a time when the U.K. is seeking to bolster ties with Japan as it aims to be the most influential European nation in the Indo-Pacific region, said John Nilsson-Wright, the head of the Japan and Koreas program at the Centre for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge. In October 2020, Britain touted an economic partnership with Japan as the first major international trade agreement it had struck since leaving the European Union earlier that year.

“The U.K.-Japan relationship is hugely important. … It’s based on shared common experience. It’s based also on the affinity between our two peoples,’’ Nilsson-Wright said. “Britain and Japan can act as a source of stability and, hopefully, mutual reassurance at a time when political change is so potentially destabilizing.”

The trip, originally planned for 2020, was intended to be the emperor’s first overseas visit after he ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne the previous year. But it was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the death of Queen Elizabeth II , although he did attend her funeral.

The state visit began Tuesday, when Charles and Queen Camilla formally welcomed the emperor and empress, then accompanied them on a ceremonial carriage ride to Buckingham Palace. Naruhito later laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Westminster Abbey before returning to the palace for a state banquet.

But before the pomp and circumstance, Naruhito donned a blue hard hat and toured the Thames Barrier, a series of retractable steel gates that protect London from flooding while allowing ships to continue navigating the river. After the state visit, he and his wife toured their old colleges at Oxford.

It was at Merton College that the future emperor, who was born Hironomiya Naruhito, was known simply as Hiro because it was easier for faculty and students to remember (and because the prince liked the sound of it), he wrote in “The Thames and I.”

One of his greatest joys at Merton was to go to the Middle Common Room, a meeting place for graduate students, to drink coffee and talk with other students after lunch.

“These moments, with my fellow students, brief as they were, were very important for me,’’ Naruhito wrote.

Among those students was Keith George, an American law student from West Virginia who lived next door to Naruhito. George jokingly described their relationship as the prince and the pauper, as he was a 22-year-old “Appalachian hillbilly.”

Yet he treasures a framed photograph snapped by Associated Press photographer Peter Kemp on the day they met. Both are wearing white tie and academic gowns. And they are laughing.

“It was authentic. It was not contrived,″ George said. “Yes, when I met him the first time ... you can’t help from being completely aware of the fact that this is the Crown Prince, eventually to be the emperor of Japan. But once the dust settles on that note ... it all goes back to: Are you genuine friends or not? We were.”

And they still are.

Britain in the 1980s was a revelation to Naruhito because the country seemed to respect the past even as it embraced the future, he wrote in his memoir, recalling the peaceful co-existence of scholars in traditional caps and gowns with young people wearing punk rock garb.

“I did not feel that was out of the ordinary,’’ Naruhito wrote. “It seemed to me that both reflected the spirit of the place. This was, after all, a country which produced the Beatles and the miniskirt. I felt that while the British attach importance to old traditions, they also have the ability to innovate.’’

Naruhito also wrote about the novelty of walking through the streets of Oxford without being noticed, of spending hours in the local records office doing his academic research and of having the chance to do his own shopping and other mundane chores that most people take for granted.

And he remembered climbing a hill northeast of the city just to take in the view.

“It was best toward sunset,’’ he wrote. “I can never forget the moment when the silhouettes of the spires of Oxford one by one caught the evening light and seemed to float above the mists. This mystical sight, which has aroused so much admiration, is called Oxford’s dreaming spires.’’

But behind it all there was always the River Thames, which flows southeast from Oxford to London before emptying into the North Sea.

“I think perhaps (what) it symbolized to him was a combination of beauty and freedom,” George said.

Naruhito began studying river commerce as a boy when Japan’s roads and rivers offered a glimpse of travel and freedom outside the confines of the palace. So when he arrived in Oxford, it was logical to study the Thames.

Looking back at the research he did 40 years ago, Naruhito is flooded with nostalgia.

“The memories of my time with the Thames come back to me,’’ he told reporters in Tokyo before visiting Britain. “The list goes on and on, including my hard work in collecting historical materials … the beautiful scenery around me that healed me from my fatigue from research, and the days I jogged along the river.’’

Metro driver saves woman who jumped in front of train at Pelaw

A fast-acting Metro driver was able to come to the aid of a distressed woman after she jumped in front of the train at Pelaw station this evening.

Nexus, the operator of the Tyne and Wear Metro service, has confirmed that a woman leaped into the path of an approaching Metro train just before 5pm on April 11. Thankfully, the driver was able to stop the train in time and helped her off the track.

There are Metro delays of up to 30 minutes system wide following a police incident at Pelaw Metro station.

Police incident partially blocks lane on Newcastle Central Motorway

One lane is partially obstructed on the A167(M) Central Motorway, southbound off slip, just before the approach to the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle due to a police incident involving one car.

'We just feel undervalued' Junior doctors begin four-day strike as pay dispute with Government continues

Junior doctors have began a four-day strike as part of their ongoing dispute with the Government over pay.

The walkout by members of the British Medical Association (BMA) is expected to cause huge disruption to the NHS this week, with an estimated 250,000 appointments, including operations, set to be cancelled.

They are demanding a pay deal which addresses a 26% fall in the real-terms value of their pay since 2008. NHS managers have warned that patient care is "on a knife edge" because of the strike.

A repair is required in the SR2 area of Sunderland - with water supplies around Hunter Terrace potentially affected until 1.45pm.

CCTV appeal to trace woman after bank cards stolen from vehicle in Gateshead

Police have issued a CCTV appeal after a number of bank cards were stolen from a vehicle in Gateshead before being used to purchase a number of items.

Officers received a report that a bag containing bank cards and a coat were stolen from a locked vehicle on Dunsmuir Grove, in Bensham, at around 6am on September 17 last year.

The stolen cards were then used to buy a number of items from a garage nearby as well as paying for a taxi journey.

Sam Fender left drinkers in Newcastle stunned when he performed a new song to them over the Easter weekend.

The singer-songwriter popped into Prohibition Cabaret Bar on Pink Lane for a drink on Saturday night and customers in the 1920s themed venue couldn't believe their luck when he sat down at the piano and started belting out one of his new tunes.

They fell silent as the 28-year-old, who was dressed casually in a hoodie and trainers, sang a ballad which was reportedly about his grandparents.

A number of road closures and roadworks will be in place across the North East this week.

While some roads are fully closed, other roads have lane closures and temporary traffic measures in place affecting some of the region's busiest routes.

And drivers are urged to make allowances for these closures and alter their travel arrangements if necessary.

Temporary station closure - Haymarket

Metro took to Twitter this morning to write: "Haymarket station will close at 9.30pm and will remain closed until 6.00am the following day on the following dates this week: Tues 11th to Thurs 13th April.

"During this time trains will run through the station without stopping. Please use Monument."

A paedophile who is "petrified" of prison has been put behind bars after breaching a prevention order for the third time.

Lee Dominy was put on the sex offenders' register and made subject of a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) after being jailed for 21 months in 2019 after being found with indecent images and extreme pornography.

But the 33-year-old went on the breach the SHPO in November 2021 and received a caution, before breaching it a second time and receiving a community order.

Khani Le and Matt Robertson chronicle their unusual trip to Costa Rica in "Longest Third Date."

Your time is limited. Deciding what to watch can be exhausting. “Stop Scrolling” offers suggestions of movies and television shows that might not be on your radar, but should be.

“When you’re stuck together there’s not much else to do but drink and f–k,” says Khani Le in the documentary Longest Third Date.

Le and Matt Robinson had no idea of the adventure they were in for, when, on a whim, they decided to jet off to Costa Rica together.

The couple, who matched on a dating app, barely knew each other when they decided to throw caution to the wind and take what was supposed to be a quick five day trip together.

But, COVID changed everything, turning their spur-of-the-moment jaunt into a months-long journey. One that was both physically and emotionally taxing.

What transpired between the two was all caught on camera, thanks to Le and Robertson, who documented all of the ups and downs as they navigated their unique situation.

On March 17, 2020, despite some concern from friends about moving too fast in their relationship, and warnings about the newly discovered coronavirus, the pair boarded a nearly empty flight out of New York and began their vacation.

After enjoying three days at an all-inclusive resort ziplining and consuming cocktails, they learned that their flights back to the U.S. had been canceled — indefinitely.

They ended up spending 79 days navigating not only their new relationship, but also their living situation as the resort closed down and Le and Robertson were forced to move reside in a series of Airbnb locations, including an open-air treehouse.

But, as Le expressed, a combination of boredom and handling all the drama brought the two together in many ways, including physically.

Which led to another scare when Le suspected she might be pregnant, complicating their situation even further, as did a serious accident in with their rental car ran off the road and into a lagoon.

At that point, Le says in the documentary, “I was like, ‘we have to get back home. It’s not fun anymore.’”

At a scant 80 minutes, the film obviously doesn’t document every minute of the months Le and Robertson spent together, but it covers enough to understand how they communicated and takes an intimate look into a relationship that was unintentionally put on fast-forward.

Finally, the duo made it home later via a government-sponsored flight to Houston. From Texas, they were able to get a flight back to NYC and resume their lives.

The documentary is also a fine study in taking chances and realizing that many things, including if you fall in love, and if you don’t, are out of your hands.

Did their extremely extended third date lead to a continuing relationship? Well, no spoilers here. Just watch the film. There will most likely never, ever be another date like this one and it’s fun to go along on this journey.
