How to cancel an amtrak ticket.

If your ticket was bought online on the website, you must log into your Amtrak.com account.

Inside the Amtrak's site, there is an area to cancel a trip.

If the train ticket was bought in other channels, you could do it on Amtrak's website too.

To do this, you must have the reservation number and the email address or phone number used during the purchased. With both information, you should click on "Modify Trip" on Amtrak.com.

It is necessary to request the cancel at least 24 hours before the board time.

The company can apply a cancellation fee.

Sleeping Accommodations

In this case, it is important to request the cancellation of 15 or more days before the departure date.

If the cancellation is requested 14 days fewer the travel time, the ticket is not refundable.

However, the value paid can be applied to an eVoucher that can be used for future trips.

Amtrak Baggage

How much luggage is allowed on amtrak.

Travelers are allowed to bring up to two personal baggage.

In a case of the traveler who carries only one item, the size must be 12 kilograms or 25 pounds and 14 x 11 x 7 inches for each one.

Everyone who carries on two items, the baggage size of them must be 23 kilograms or 50 pounds and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each one.

10. Empire Service

Trains on the Empire Service route travel along New York’s Hudson River multiple times each day. There are beautiful views of the water, Hudson Highlands and the Catskills (both part of the Appalachian Mountains). Another great feature of this route is that day trips are easily doable, including from Albany and New York City, which are at each end of the Hudson River Valley. Other popular stops are Rochester, Syracuse and Niagara Falls.

9. Lake Shore Limited

The Lake Shore Limited is a long-distance route that travels through rolling hills in Western Massachusetts (via a Boston departure or arrival). You also have the option to start or end the trip in New York City to travel through the Hudson River Valley. Both segments have wonderful views of fall foliage in October, and you’ll see the Chicago skyline on westbound trips and the Erie Canal when traveling eastbound during the summer.

8. Adirondack

Like the Empire Service and Lake Shore Limited, Amtrak’s  Adirondack  route travels through the scenic Hudson River Valley, but uniquely continues on to the shores of Lake Champlain. There are distant views of mountains, hours of water scenery and the option to travel to  Montreal  (passport required). New York City is at one end of the route and is a popular place to start this trip, especially with connections to other Amtrak trains ( view the list ).

7. Cascades

The Amtrak Cascades provides amazing views of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia on the journey between Vancouver and cities in Washington and Oregon. Highlights include views of Puget Sound, Salish Sea, Chuckanut Bay, Cascade Mountains and the Olympic Mountains. You’ll need a passport to travel to and from Canada. 6. Southwest Chief

The Southwest Chief is the route to ride for unique desert landscapes and views of Old West towns. Trains travel between Chicago and Los Angeles via New Mexico, where you’ll travel through Raton Pass, Apache Canyon and along part of Route 66 and the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. For the best scenery and a shorter trip, travel between Kansas City and California, and consider a stop in Flagstaff to travel to the Grand Canyon (view top attractions along the Southwest Chief route to learn more).

5. Cardinal

One of Amtrak’s hidden gems, the Cardinal route connects Chicago with East Coast cities via West Virginia. You’ll travel through the beautiful New River Gorge (pictured above); the best direction of travel is east (departures from Chicago and other Midwest cities) or travel west in the summer to see the most scenery in the Appalachian Mountains. If you want to visit the New River Gorge National Park, book your ticket to Charleston, West Virginia and rent a car.

4. Pacific Surfliner

A California route, the Pacific Surfliner has stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Trains travel next to beaches and the coastline for miles — so close that you can see sunbathers and surfers on the beaches. You can easily take a day trip or weekend trip, making this route a great option if you have limited time. The end-of-the-line stations are San Diego and San Luis Obispo in the Central Coast (view all the best stops on the Pacific Surfliner to learn more).

3. Empire Builder

The Empire Builder showcases diverse landscapes across the United States. You’ll see farms, forests, prairies and rivers in the Midwest (including the Mississippi River), and travel through the Montana Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest. You can choose to start or end the trip in Portland to travel through the Columbia River Gorge or in Seattle for views of Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains. Be sure to travel eastbound to see the Rocky Mountains in daylight and consider getting off the train to visit Glacier National Park .

2. Coast Starlight

A long-distance route on the West Coast, the Coast Starlight has two days of stunning scenery and many great stops for sightseeing . There are views of the Pacific Ocean in California and the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington State. Northbound travel from Southern California is recommended followed by southbound trips in the summer. Los Angeles and Seattle are the two end-of-the-line stations, but you can also start or end the trip at the Van Nuys Station (VNC) near the Hollywood Burbank Airport for easy access to the Coast Starlight.

1. California Zephyr

The California Zephyr is frequently named the most scenic Amtrak route in America by rail passengers. The western half of the route between Denver and California is a bucket-list experience as trains travel in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, along the Colorado River, in Ruby Canyon and through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. You can start or end the trip in Sacramento or Emeryville (both are near airports). Chicago is at the other end of the route, or start/end in Denver for a shorter journey.

Amtrak, New Jersey Transit seeing major delays as downed wire snarls rail traffic into Penn station

Commuters on Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains were experiencing heavy delays Tuesday morning as rail traffic between New York Penn Station and points south ground to a halt after a downed overhead lines stranded a commuter train.

Riders were told to expect a 30 – 90 minute delay Tuesday as crews worked to remove the disabled train.

The outbound NJ Transit train was stuck on the short stretch of tracks between Penn and the North River Tunnel under the Hudson River, a spokesman for the agency told the Daily News.

A spokesman for Amtrak — the federal railway that operates the track where the outage occurred — said repair work was underway, and that the cause of the disruption was under investigation.

The delays come less than a month after a downed power-transmission line along the same stretch of track in the Meadowlands snarled evening train traffic for NJ Transit and Amtrak riders .

The outage incensed NJ Gov. Phil Murphy, who demanded better maintenance from Amtrak in an open letter to the railroad’s chairman, Tony Coscia

“I refuse to accept these Amtrak infrastructure challenges as an inevitable part of operating integrated mass transit systems,” he wrote at the time, calling on the railroad to make “immediate short-term and long-term investments” in its infrastructure.

Major repairs to the 1910-vintage North River tunnel constitute what’s expected to be the final phase of the sweeping Gateway Project , a $40 billion effort to overhaul train tracks through the Meadowlands connecting New Jersey and New York.

The construction of a second set of tubes linking New Jersey to Penn Station — the $16 billion Hudson Tunnel — is ongoing.

Amtrak's Latest Sale Has Tickets for As Low As $15 — When to Book

Amtrak's Northeast Summer Sale has discounted flights to New York, Boston, Washington D.C. and more.

Amtrak is making it easier to get up and down the East Coast this summer with a sale offering at least 25 percent off Flex fares in the region.

The sale is valid on travel from June 28 to Sept. 2 on Northeast Regional Coach tickets and Acela Business Class tickets to select cities between Boston and Washington, D.C., the rail company told Travel + Leisure .

To take advantage, travelers must purchase their tickets by June 20.

And with no blackout dates, travelers can snag discounted tickets on summer holiday travel for popular weekends like July Fourth and Labor Day.

“In addition to spending less on travel, Amtrak customers experience a convenient and comfortable trip that also minimizes their carbon footprint whether it’s to visit friends and family, head to the beach or travel for work,” the company wrote in a statement shared with T+L.

Travel between Boston and Providence with tickets starting as low as $15 each way, or travel between either Boston and New York City or Washington D.C. and New York City for as low as $42 each way. Travelers can also splurge for an Acela Business Class ticket starting at just $63 between Philadelphia and New York City, or starting at just $75 between Boston and New York City.

On board, travelers riding in Acela Business Class can enjoy a recently revamped cafe menu with options like overnight oats, pastries from local regional bakeries, charcuterie plates, and more. In addition to saving with the sale price, the promotion can be combined with other everyday discounts like half-off child fares, according to Amtrak. 

Beyond this sale, Amtrak is increasing its East Coast options by bringing back (and expanding) its popular seasonal Berkshire Flyer train between New York City and the Berkshires.

Last year, Amtrak changed its fare structure , introducing two fare options of “value” and “flex” and eliminating the previous options of “saver,” “value,” and “flexible” fares.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. passenger railroad Amtrak said on Wednesday it expects ridership to top pre-COVID 2019 levels this year for the first time and reach a record high even though it has less capacity.

Ridership was 20% higher in the first seven months of Amtrak's budget year that began Oct. 1, and ticket revenue was up 10% versus the same period in 2023, according to written testimony by Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner to be presented at a hearing of a U.S. House of Representative subcommittee on Wednesday.

"We are on target to set a new all-time ridership record by exceeding the 32.3 million passengers" in 2019, Gardner said in the written testimony.

Amtrak passengers grew 45% from 2003 to 2019 to 32.3 million.

Gardner said Amtrak's year-to-date revenue is also higher than in 2019, but "has been impacted by the reduced business travel since the pandemic as virtual meetings have replaced many short-duration business trips."

Amtrak said it has fewer seats because of a number of factors including delays in starting service with new Siemens Venture cars that state partners have acquired for Midwestern and California route sand delays in beginning service of the new Acela trainsets by Alstom on the Northeast Corridor because of continued testing.

A busy California route has been severed on multiple occasions for extended periods due to worsening erosion at points where its right-of-way runs beneath bluffs along the Pacific Coast.

Amtrak in March said it was boosting passenger services on the East Coast as it aims to double ridership nationwide by 2040. It will boost service between Boston and Washington by as much as 20% on weekdays and will add 1 million additional seats over the next year.

Congress approved $66 billion in funding for rail projects as part of a massive infrastructure bill in 2021, with $22 billion dedicated to Amtrak and $36 billion made available for grants.

In November the White House announced $16.4 billion in new funding for 25 passenger rail projects on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, which is the busiest U.S. rail corridor with 800,000 daily trips in a region that represents 20% of the U.S. economy.

Megabus parent company Coach USA files for bankruptcy

One of the biggest operators of private bus service in the United States filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week . Coach USA runs a network of commuter services, mostly in the Northeast, as well as Megabus service throughout the U.S. It’s ridership fell early in the pandemic and hasn’t fully bounced back.

While airlines and cruises are again seeing record bookings, bus trips have continued to lag, according to Peter Pantuso, CEO of the American Bus Association.

“We lost somewhere between 40% and 50% of the industry,” he said.

The biggest hit has been to commuter services, he noted — typically between outer suburbs and city centers.

“People stopped going to work five days a week all of a sudden, and now they’re going maybe one day a week — if they’re going in at all,” Pantuso said.

Longer trips, like those from Megabus, have fared a little better, said Joe Schwieterman, a transportation professor at DePaul University. But domestic airfares are still relatively cheap, and the motor coach industry has struggled with driver shortages, rising labor and fuel costs.

“People are, like, super price sensitive, so they’ll take the bus, but don’t make the fare the same price as Amtrak or they’re gonna ditch, ditch you for the train,” Schwieterman said.

One bright spot in the industry is charter bus service, he noted. With spending on other forms of travel and leisure up, there’s more demand for tours and connections.
