Brasov walking tour

Meet with our guide and start a walking tour of Brasov - Old medieval town.. The city of Brasov is one of the oldest in Europe, dating from 1235. During the Middle Ages, Brasov was known as a powerful fortress surrounded by high stone walls and defended by bulwarks, towers and other small fortresses. The buildings and the streets in the historical centre still preserve a medieval note. Dating from 1520, the City Council Square has been considered the centre of Brasov for hundreds of years. Merchants and craftsmen fairs took place here. They came from Transylvania, Wallachia, and even the Near East and Europe. According to the types of merchandise they traded on the side streets of this Square, the streets were called The Wheat Fair, The Cloth Row, The Butnar Fair, The Linen Fair, The Cotton Row or The Coats Fair. The Square is surrounded by houses built in the Renaissance, Baroque, Provincial and Neo-classic style and they once sheltered small shops and warehouses. The Square is dominated by the magnificent building called the Council Hall. The medieval fortress of Brasov was one of the most secure fortresses in Europe, the architectural defence pile being made of stone walls, 24 defence towers, 10 bulwarks and 4 fortified gates. The towers had both defence and observation roles. During our tour we’ll see the old wall which is still preserved, Black and White Towers and also we’ll visit the Weaver’s Bastion – the biggest and best preserved bastion. Ecaterina`s Gate situated near the Schei Gate in the western part of the Fortress was built in 1559 in the Renaissance style. It has a sharp tower and four little towers, symbolizing the medieval right of life and death (the right of the broadsword). The gate also had firing vents, a drawbridge with chains, being one of the most fortified gates of the city. The very known Black Church it is also a major tourist sight of Brasov and a stop in our tour. Due to its dimensions (over 89 metres long), the Black Church is the largest religious building between Vienna and Istanbul. From 1385 when the process of building the church began and up to 1689 when it got fire, the name of the church was St. Mary`s Church. Due to the dark colour of the burnt walls, it got the name of the "Black Church". Another stop will be at St. Nicholas Cathedral which is considered the Romanian’s Cathedral in the Barsa region and it is situated in the oldest part of the city - the "Schei" district. It was built in 1495 in the same place where a 13th-century religious establishment once stood. Next to it is the Museum of the first Romanian School, which displays a 15th century print shop and an extremely valuable collection of old books and documents, one of the oldest of their kinds from Romania.

Medieval sights & buildings

After the sights in Old Town, we head on narrow streets to Tampa promenade to find an old fountain with fresh spring water from the Carpathians and replenish our fluids. Then we climb to the top of the 12-meter wall surrounding the city for some spectacular views! Our next stop is St. Nicholas Church with its 'suspended cemetery' and the fairytale-esque Ecaterina Gate, the oldest in the city.

Brasov's medieval defences

The city's defense system was very advanced for Medieval times so we will visit Weaver's Bastion and the famous Black and White towers to learn more about how Brasov defended itself. Venturing beyond city walls we will also discover the entrances to secret catacombs, impressive street art, stunning parklands and how everyday locals enjoy life at a more relaxed pace than Bucharest!

We had a great tour and it was a great way to get our bearings, see the sites abnd learn about Brasov. Our guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions we had. We got picked up from and dropped of at out accommodation which was very helpful.

This tour was just about what I wanted. Tiberiu created a space where I felt comfortable asking questions, which is how I learn, so a thank you to him. Saw a lot of interesting things too!

Our guide had fabulous passion and knowledge. We learned so much from Tavi about the history, culture and architecture of Brasov. We would highly recommend joining his tour.

brasov walking tour map

It may have started out as a walking tour with a guide but ended up as a stroll with a friend! My tour of the main attractions and streets with Tudor was superb. We started in the main square and meandered around the beautiful medieval town visiting historical sites within the city walls but also outside in the winding streets of the Romanian sector. I enjoyed every moment and Tudor was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. I particularly enjoyed learning about the colourful history of the town and the views of the town from the hills. Touring with locals is the way to go - they are passionate about their own towns and want you to love them as much as they do. It was a little hilly at times so a basic degree of fitness is required but Tudor is very considerate and will take it at your pace. Very glad I booked this tour through Romanian Friend!

Superb tour with a fabulous guide, Tavi. Highly recommend this experience and this was the fourth tour I booked with Romanian Friend -- all of them fantastic!

Our Brasov Walking Tour is a 4-hour-long itinerary of the city's most beautiful and interesting places.  The tour is a great fit for active travelers who want to find out more about the history and local life of Brasov.

The tour starts and ends in Council Square, the central landmark of the Old Town. We'll share stories of the city's key historical events, starting with the 13th-century arrival of the Teutonic Knights. The German colonists took over just a few decades after and made their mark on Brasov, as well as on Sibiu and other cities in Transylvania.

We visit the Black Church, the Weavers’ Bastion, and walk along the fortification walls that once protected Brasov to understand its history. We explore old churches of different confessions that best express the multicultural diversity of the city.

This city is also part of most of our tours in Transylvania .

Brasov Walking Tour is available in English and Italian, from Tuesday to Sunday.

Tour suited also for active seniors.

This tour can be modified according to your time and points of interest.

Our Brasov Walking Tour starts and ends in Council Square.

The Council Square

This iconic central square is one of the oldest parts of the city. The main landmark, the centuries-old Council Tower, served numerous purposes in the past. It was a merchant place, a Town Hall, a prison, a headquarter for the all-powerful Local Council. Today, it's the History Museum of Brasov, a great stop for an in-depth discovery of the city's past.

Find out more about Brasov

The Black Church

The Black Church is the most famous monument in Brasov. It's also the most impressive Gothic-style church in this part of Europe. Plus, it has the biggest church bell in Transylvania and the largest collection of Oriental carpets in Europe outside Turkey. Beyond these many records, the Black Church is simply a stunning landmark you shouldn't miss.

Plus, its history is nothing short of great fires, major attacks, the Reformation, and so many more interesting pieces of history.

Find out more about  the Black Church

The Weavers' Bastion

We continue our Brasov Walking Tour with a visit to the Weavers’ Bastion, the best-preserved fortification of the city. Its small museum offers a great chance to find out more about the history of Brasov.

The fortification system

We observe the ruins of the fortification walls that once enclosed the German part of Brasov. As we walk along the Lower and Upper Walls, we have some of the best views over the Old Town.

We'll see up close the Black Tower, the White Tower, the Graft Bastion, the Drapers’ Bastion, the Red Tanners’ Bastion, and Ecaterina’s Gate, the only original gate still preserved.

Old streets and churches

Black Church in Brasov Romania

The Black Church is the largest Gothic church in Romania and the most distinctive landmark in Brasov. It was constructed between 1385 and 1477 on the site of a previous church that was destroyed during Mongol invasions in 1242. The church’s original Gothic interior has been renovated and is now mostly baroque. It features balconies, stained glass windows, a massive organ, stone columns, and walls adorned with beautiful Turkish carpets. The church’s seven-ton bell is the largest in Romania. The church’s organ, dating back to 1839, still functions with 4,000 pipes and offers weekly concerts.

Counsel's House in Brasov Romania

The Council House was destroyed in a devastating fire in 1689. It was then rebuilt in a Baroque style between 1774 and 1778. The town’s blazonry was used to decorate the loggia, and the tower’s domed roof was preserved in its original form until 1910.

The Council House served as the town’s archive until 1923, after which it was turned into a museum to exhibit historical and archaeological collections. Since 1950, the building has been functioning as a museum and is open to the public.

The best things to see in Brasov, Romania include the Citadel

The Citadel, also known as Brasov Fortress or Cetatea Brassovia, is located on a hill that provides an advantageous viewpoint over the town and the northern plains. Originally built in wood in 1524, it was later replaced with a stone structure in the 16th century. However, the technological advancements of the 17th century made the citadel defenseless against cannons that became stronger than the building. As a result, it was abandoned during this period.

Weaver's Bastian in Brasov Romania

The Weavers' Bastion

The Weavers’ Bastion, known as Bastionul Țesătorilor, was constructed between 1421 and 1436 and rebuilt from 1570 to 1573. It is the largest medieval bastion in Brasov and is also the best-preserved among the seven original watchtowers built around the city walls.

Today, the Weavers’ Bastion serves as an interesting museum that can be visited on the way up to Mt. Tâmpa.

Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in Brasov Romania

The Schei District is dominated by the Saint Nicholas Church (Biserica Sfantul Nicolae). Initially built in wood in 1392, it was replaced with a stone structure in 1495 and expanded in the 18th century. Today, it stands as a remarkable architectural masterpiece.

The building features a blend of Byzantine, Baroque, and Gothic styles. It boasts a slender tower and four corner towers. The medieval church is surrounded by protective walls and large wooden gates. It houses a small cemetery where several prominent Romanians are buried.

Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Brasov Romania

The Assumption of Virgin Mary Orthodox Church was built in the neo-Byzantine style between 1895 and 1896, with a central dome and a bell tower. Later, a tower was added to the facade facing the square, but it collapsed during the earthquake of 1940. The tower was reconstructed in 1973 together with the facade of the parish houses.

The interior of the church is adorned with carved and gilded art pieces made by János Kupcsay, who was the director of the sculpture school in Brașov. Kupcsay created the pulpit, bishop’s seat, iconostasis, and galleries on the choir platform.

Catherine's Gate in Brasov Romania

Catherine's Gate

Catherine’s Gate, also known as Poarta Ecaterinei, was built by the Tailors’ Guild in 1559 and is the only original gate that has survived from the medieval times. The tower that stands today was once part of a larger structure which unfortunately was demolished in 1827. The original structure can be viewed at the Weavers’ Bastion Museum where a large model of 16th century Brasov is displayed.

The four small corner turrets, found in other Saxon citadels, were symbolic of the judicial autonomy of the Town Council, which had the power to apply the death penalty if necessary. The tower above the entrance displays the city’s crest that features a crown on a tree trunk.

Black Tower in Brasov Romania

The Black Tower, also known as Turnul Negru, was constructed in 1494 and sits on Starja Hill near the Blacksmiths’ Bastion. It is a squared tower built on top of a rock. The tower got its name after a severe fire caused by lightning in 1559. Recently, it was renovated and now features a pyramid-shaped glass roof.

The tower serves as a small museum displaying war-related artifacts. The interior of the tower has four floors, each accessible via a narrow wooden ladder. If you climb all the way to the top, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Black Church.

Brassovia Stronghold in Brasov Romania

The Brassovia Stronghold, constructed at the end of the 13th century, is situated on Tampa Hill and was built to provide a safe place for the town’s people. The stronghold’s walls, which are only partially standing today, enclosed an area of 23,000 square meters with defense towers, a water tank, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Leonard.

Despite providing a refuge, the stronghold was difficult to access from the town and maintain due to its size and became a potential threat to the town itself. Therefore, it was ordered to be demolished in the mid-15th century.

However, the remnants of the Brassovia Stronghold still offer a stunning panoramic view of the town. You can hike to the top following the red triangle or yellow triangle marked trail, taking about an hour, or take the cable car to the peak of the mountain at an elevation of 3,200 feet.

The facade of the church has mosaic elements and three stunning stained glass windows. The roof of the church has 10 towers and a belfry that houses two bells. The church is adorned with painted frescoes by Iosif Vasu and contains icons dating back to 1838.

White Tower in Brasov Romania

The White Tower (Turnul Alb) was built during the 15th century, either in 1460 or 1494. It is situated on the slopes of Romurilor Hill and was used for defense by the corporations of the tinners and the coppersmiths. The tower has a semicircular plan with five levels of defense galleries equipped with shooting holes, crenels, and throwing gussets for liquids.

Unfortunately, the tower was destroyed by fire in 1689, but it was later restored in 1723 and 1902. Further restoration work was carried out in 1974 and 2003-2005. Currently, it functions as a museum.

Drapers Bastion in Brasov Romania

The Drapers' Bastion

The Drapers Bastion in the eastern corner of Brasov’s Stronghold was originally assigned to the goldsmiths’ guild for defense. The ellipsoidal monument was built on the remains of older constructions that were connected to the first enclosure of walls of the medieval fortifications. The bastion still has narrow rectangular shooting windows that alternate with black oil gussets at the last level.

The Drapers’ Bastion was consolidated between 1961 and 1962 and restored from 2006-2012. Today, it is a museum.

Carpenter's Tower in Brasov Romania

The Carpenter's Tower

The Carpenters’ Tower, also known as the Woodmen’s Tower, is one of the defensive towers that form the city walls of the Old Town. It is situated near the Drapers’ Bastion. Recently, the tower underwent renovation and now it houses a sculpture workshop and a small exhibition that displays the products made there.

Additionally, visitors can admire remarkably well-preserved fragments of original frescoes inside the church, which adds to its charm and beauty.

George Bariţiu County Library Building in Brasov Romania

The George Bariţiu County Library Building was built in a neo-Romanian style between 1927 and 1929 by architects Moritz Wagner and Constantin Nanescu. Originally intended to be the Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s headquarters, it’s situated in front of Warthe Hill.

Since 1969, the library has been housed in this building, containing a collection of over 280,000 books on a wide range of topics. A statue of George Bariţiu (1812-1893), a historian and journalist who founded The Gazette of Transylvania, the first political and informative newspaper for Romanians living in Ardeal in 1838 in Brasov, stands in front of the library.

Graft Bastion in Brasov Romania

Located on the middle of the northwestern side of the stronghold, you will come across The Graft Bastion (Bastionul Graft). It is a perpendicular structure constructed on the stronghold’s wall, which acts as a bridge over a rivulet. The purpose of this bastion is to connect the White Tower to the internal fortifications. The structure has a rectangular shape and a vaulted passage over the water. It has two levels of defense, including shooting windows and throwing gussets, used to control the length of the walls.

In the years 2003-2004, the Graft Bastion was restored and converted into a museum. An access staircase was also constructed towards the White Tower during this time.

Rector’s Seat of Transylvania University in Brasov Romania

The Rector's Seat of Transilvania University

The Rector’s Seat of Transylvania University was constructed between 1881 and 1885 to serve as the residence of the General Pensions Institute. It was designed by Peter Bartesch, who was the first “building engineer” in the region of the ancient fortifications of the “Stronghold.” The building is designed in the neo-Renaissance style and features allegorical figures on the upper facade, created in a sgraffito technique by painter Lotte Goldschmidt.

Tanner's Bastion in Brasov Romania

The Red Tanners’ Bastion is the only remaining monument of the northeastern fortifications of Brasov’s Stronghold that were demolished in the 19th century. It was constructed in the early 16th century near the Drapers’ Bastion and was part of the outer enclosure that fortified the eastern defense line of the town.

The bastion had a horseshoe-shaped plan with alternating stone and brick facades, shooting holes for razing fire, and a castellated crown on the arch’s upper side, which unfortunately no longer exists. The bastion underwent restoration works from 1961 to 1962 and again in 2005.

Today, it is regarded as the most significant commercial program of Renaissance architecture in Transylvania.
