Our tour guide was very well informed of Perl Harbor. She did a great job with our four girls, even getting my youngest some medicine when she was not feeling well. The tour made seeing the events a lot more informative and convenient to get around.

On the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Only one day after the attack, on the afternoon of December 8, the U.S. declared war on Japan and entered the Second World War. A few days later, the U.S. also declared war on Italy and Germany.

The Hawaiian Islands consist of eight main islands and an additional 129 small islands and atolls in the North Pacific Ocean. They were, and are, a crucial strategic asset for the U.S. Due to limited fuel capacity during World War II, many airplanes couldn’t fly from North America to Asia as they do today. Therefore, Hawaii was a vital stopover for military hardware end route to the Pacific theater of war.

At the beginning of your private  Pearl Harbor tour , our guides will play a lecture done by a historian with details and insights of why the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor on December 7 of 1941. At your arrival to the Pearl Harbor visitor center our guide will give you an explanation with facts of the surprise attack and the best most effective way to navigate the visitor center to have a memorable experience. You will watch a 23minute-documentary movie with real footage of the attack, visit two indoors museums and walk around the outdoor displays.

image of the USS Arizona Memorial tour on Oahu, Hawaii.

Pearl Harbor was attacked by 353 Japanese aircraft in two waves from six aircraft carriers. A third wave was planned but never executed. The Japanese objective was to bomb the American fleet so that it could not fight back. Most of the battleships were docked in the harbor and sustained damage from the Japanese planes that filled the sky. Although the raid only lasted 75 minutes, the Japanese damaged several American battleships, along with three cruisers, three destroyers, and an anti-aircraft training ship. A bomb smashed through the deck of the USS Arizona and caused the ship to explode and sink. Almost 200 American aircraft were destroyed, 2,403 Americans were killed, and 1,178 suffered severe injuries. The Japanese lost 29 aircraft, five midget submarines, and 64 servicemen. Even with the element of surprise, the Japanese failed to destroy the Pacific Fleet entirely. Most of the American aircraft carriers were away from the base, and most of the shipyards and submarine docks were left intact.

Not only did Pearl Harbor led to U.S. involvement in the Second World War, but it also ultimately led to the first and only use of atomic weapons in history. On August 6th, 1945 the US dropped Little Boy on Hiroshima and three days later dropped Fat Boy on Nagasaki. The ensuing unprecedented devastation precipitated the Japanese surrender on September 2nd, 1945.

Hawaii Tours FAQ

The ideal stay on Oahu can vary, but a common recommendation is about 5 to 7 days. This allows you to explore the island’s major attractions, enjoy some beach time, and get a taste of its unique culture. Of course, the more time you have, the more you can discover!

Oahu is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit for great weather and fewer crowds is typically from mid-April to early June and September to mid-December. These are the shoulder seasons, providing a more relaxed and pleasant experience.

It takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to drive around the entire island if you’re taking the scenic route without many stops. However, exploring the island thoroughly with stops at various attractions will take a full day or more. For reference, our Circle Island Tour lasts around 9 hours.

Guided tours offer you the expertise of local guides who can provide insights, take you to the best spots, and ensure you make the most of your visit. Whether it’s a historical tour, a hiking adventure, or a cultural exploration, guided tours can make your Oahu experience truly memorable.

Among the multitude of tours available on Oahu, the two most iconic and highly sought-after experiences are the Circle Island Tours and Pearl Harbor Tours. These tours have consistently garnered immense popularity among visitors, offering distinct and compelling attractions that captivate the hearts of tourists from around the world.

While several transportation options are available, guided bus tours stand out as the most comfortable and economical means of experiencing all that Hawaii has to offer. Guided bus tours provide an unbeatable combination of comfort, convenience, and affordability. They offer travelers a stress-free and leisurely way to explore Hawaii’s most famous attractions and hidden gems.

For your first visit to Hawaii, Oahu is an ideal choice due to its well-developed infrastructure, making it easy to explore the island. Oahu offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly choices, and is equipped with modern amenities. You can enjoy diverse activities, from relaxing on famous beaches like Waikiki to exploring cultural sites like Pearl Harbor. The island’s culinary scene and cultural experiences are rich and varied, providing a well-rounded introduction to Hawaii’s offerings. Whether you’re interested in relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion, Oahu has something to offer every traveler.

Hawaii’s weather is characterized by a tropical climate, offering warm temperatures year-round. Coastal areas typically experience temperatures in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit (20s to 30s Celsius) during the day, with relatively mild fluctuations between seasons. Trade winds provide a pleasant breeze, especially in the summer. While Hawaii does have wet and dry seasons, rain showers are common but brief, with the wetter season occurring from November to March. The leeward (west) sides of the islands tend to be drier, while the windward (east) sides receive more rainfall. Overall, Hawaii offers pleasant weather for outdoor activities and beach visits throughout the year.

Choosing the best Hawaiian island to visit depends on your preferences. Oahu is great for first-timers, offering a mix of culture, activities, and infrastructure. Maui is known for its natural beauty, including the Road to Hana and Haleakalā. The Big Island (Hawaii) is perfect for adventure seekers with its volcanoes and diverse landscapes. Kauai is a haven for nature lovers, famous for its lush, pristine scenery. Molokai and Lanai are quieter and less touristy, ideal for a more relaxed experience.

Theresa H was a fabulous tour guide. She made our entire experience at Pearl Harbor memorable. She thoughtfully anticipated our needs throughout the day. I would recommend her family and friends!!

Theresa was our guide for a private tour of Pearl Harbor and the Missouri. I chose a private tour because of my two kiddos and she did not disappoint! Theresa was amazing, she even got in the line at the book store for me when I mentioned I wasn't sure if we'd have time to get books for sister. My girls like her so much that my oldest huged her at the end....my oldest does not hug anyone!! Theresa gave us several other recommendations of places to go including a beach on the North Shore where my girls got to see TURTLES 🐢, which were at the top of the "must list" for Hawaii. We will be using her on any future trips!

Today my 82 year old mom and I booked a private tour to Pearl Harbor as she had never been. All I can say is that it was an outstanding experience! Marie was incredibly knowledgeable, informative, and absolutely fun to boot! My mom can’t stop talking about her and all the things she learned today! I must say that although I had been years ago, today’s experience was exceptional. The visitor center was practically empty, which made us feel extra safe during these COVID times! Marie took wonderful pictures of us and edited them on the spot! A bonus to add to a special day! I highly recommend Blue Hawaii Photo tours to anyone looking for an exceptional tour experience! I will definitely book with Marie again whenever out of town guest visit!

We took this tour with 14 family members for my husbands 50th celebration in Hawaii. Maria the owner and Jenny were incredible. They were gracious, courteous, knowledgeable and friendly. They gave us tips to get the most out of the visit to Pearl Harbor even down to where to sit on the ferry and to watch the video prior. What a great time we had. Then after the tour they took us to a local food truck area and we had the best local food. It was a great experience and I would recommend this company to anyone looking for a great tour reasonably priced with a great caring owner and caring supporting staff. They completely exceeded our expectations.

See Why We're the Best Hawaii Tour Operator

Makani is very friendly and made booking the trip so easy. Tiho was our guide and made the trip fun and exciting. He had great stories to tell along the way. He even made some extra stops for us. Would definitely recommend this company over one of the bigger bus tours.

Ankala Tony (Uncle.Tony) is a man with a big heart and many talents that my wife and I felt privileged to behold. We soon discovered that we were in the company of a professional caliber comedian who combined side splitting humor with poignant informative narratives about his beautiful island home. One highlight involved Tony sharing his blissful vocal gift and ukelele skills.

King Mike, you LEGEND!!!!!! My wife, 12 year old son and I were lucky enough to be taken on a tour today with King Mike as our guide, what an experience. What ever he is getting paid, double it. The knowledge he shared with us about the history of Hawaii was outstanding.

We highly recommend Go Tours Hawaii. We were looking to book a tour to the north shore for 12 people and our own van with a tour driver; other companies were more expensive and one company we booked didn’t turn up, so nearly gave up until we bumped into Rodney who was so friendly, helpful, professional and gave us a really good deal.

Ray was the tour guide this day and he was awesome! He did a great job of pointing out a lot of different things as well as introducing us to local Hawaiian culture. Most of the time you drive around the North Shore in the bus - thankfully the air condition was not to cool. At each tour highlight you have a short stop (15 to 40 min.) to take pictures or explore the location.

Pearl Harbor and Historic Honolulu City Tour Departing Waikiki, Oahu

About your tour.

Book your Pearl Harbor Honolulu tour with us today and save on your bookings. Oahu’s past comes to life as you experience two distinct yet equally important periods in Hawaii’s history with our knowledgeable and friendly guide. We start at Pearl Harbor where you will come face to face with the dramatic and tragic events of December 7, 1941 when the Japanese forces launched a surprise attack on Oahu. The USS Arizona took a direct hit, sank within minutes, and 1,177 seamen went down with their ship. Watch these historic events unfold during the 23-minute documentary complete with original archival footage of that fateful morning. Think about these lost heroes as you cross the harbor in a Navy vessel en-route to the USS Arizona Memorial which is suspended over the sunken battleship. Step aboard the iconic white Memorial and take in the quiet and reverential environment. You are now standing over the Arizona hull, the final resting place for those brave seamen. In the Shrine Room, their names and ranks are inscribed in marble. Look into the water and note the oil drops – “The Black Tears of the Arizona” – that still rise to the surface from the battleship hull after nearly eight decades.

Back at Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, the museum houses the Road to War and Attack galleries with photos, memorabilia, and artifacts along with an excellent bookstore featuring WWII memorabilia, books, and souvenirs.

After Pearl Harbor, our tour continues to Historic Downtown Honolulu  where famous buildings recall Hawaii’s time as a royal kingdom. Our expert guide will point out famous architectural landmarks like Iolani Palace (built by Hawaii’s last reigning king), Kawaiahao Church, and the statue of King Kamehameha the Great who united the Hawaiian Islands under his rule in 1810.

Visiting Pearl Harbor is a fascinating and enriching experience that should not be missed during your trip to Oahu. Commemorating the horrific events of December 7, 1941 , the memorial and its accompanying museums provide a unique look at one of the most pivotal moments in American history.

While many people choose to visit Pearl Harbor with an organized tour , you can also visit the site on your own. However, doing so requires a bit of planning and preparation, as there are certain attractions that need to be reserved far in advance.

If you’re trying to figure out how to visit Pearl Harbor on your own, then you’ll want to keep a few things in mind. In this article, we’ll share an overview of what you can see during your visit, how to secure reservations, as well as a few tips and tricks on how to maximize your time there. Plus we include an example itinerary to help you organize all of these steps!

Our packing list will help you maximize space in your suitcase. Don’t book that rental car just yet, you may not need one after all .

Can You Go To Pearl Harbor on Your Own?

Yes! Pearl Harbor and its historic sites are open to the public, whether you come on your own or with a guided tour. There are no reservations needed for the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, or the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

However, you do need to reserve a ticket if you want to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. There are no first-come-first-serve tickets available, so reservations need to be secured online. A select number of tickets are released eight weeks prior (at 3 PM Hawaii Time) to the visitation date. The rest of the tickets are then released 24 hours before, which means you might be able to snag one last minute if you’re lucky.

Can You Do a Self Guided Tour of Pearl Harbor?

Absolutely! You are free to purchase tickets or reserve your spot for any or all of the attractions you want to visit at Pearl Harbor. You don’t have to book through an organized tour company to visit.

The only exception is the Ford Island Bus Tour (which we’ll talk about a bit later). This is the only attraction where you’ll be accompanied by a tour guide.

It’s also worth noting that while you can visit the USS Arizona Memorial on your own, your ticket will be for a specific time slot. And if you want to visit the Battleship Missouri or the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum (which are located on Ford Island), you need to take the shuttle. It’s free and leaves every 15 minutes from the Visitor Center.

Pearl Harbor is still an active military base for the U.S. Navy. Visits to the Pearl Harbor Memorial is currently managed by the National Park Service.

How to Visit Pearl Harbor on Your Own

Pearl Harbor isn’t just one place. Between the museums, the ship tours, and the historical sites, there’s a lot for you to see and do here. You could spend an entire day here and still not get to see everything Pearl Harbor has to offer!

Therefore, it’s important to decide which sights you want to see during your visit. At Pearl Harbor, there are several main attractions:

  • The USS Arizona Memorial (reservations)
  • The USS Battleship Missouri ($)
  • The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum ($)
  • The USS Oklahoma Memorial (reservations)
  • The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (with the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum) ($)
  • The Visitor Center

When choosing which sites to visit, keep in mind what attractions are paid and which ones require advance bookings. We’ll share more about each one a little bit later.

If you’re a budget traveler, Oahu is the island for you ! We’ve done the math for you and have the cost for a trip to Hawaii for two as well as for a family of four . Be sure to also check out how we book our travel and getting a cheap ticket to Hawaii . Better yet, book your travel with points and thank us later!

Pick a Date and Plan Ahead

There are two main attractions that require advance reservations – the USS Arizona Memorial and the Ford Bus Tour to see the USS Oklahoma and USS Utah.

The USS Arizona Memorial is the most popular attraction at Pearl Harbor and definitely something you should see while you’re here. Therefore, we recommend basing your trip to Pearl Harbor around when you’re able to secure tickets for this tour.

If you want to see the USS Oklahoma Memorial and USS Utah Memorial, then you’ll also be required to reserve a spot in advance on the Ford Island Bus Tour. This 90-minute park ranger-led tour will take you by bus to see the memorials as well as a few other “hidden” sights of Pearl Harbor.

Once you secure your reservation(s) for a specific date and time, you can decide which museums or sights you have time to see before or after.

However, we recommend blocking out an entire day for your Pearl Harbor Visit. Even if you only tick off two or three sights, you’ll still want to give yourself extra time for travel, lunch, and bathroom breaks.

Book Tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial

Tickets for the USS Arizona Memorial are free (although there is a $1 service charge), but they need to be made online and in advance. Tickets are released in two booking windows on the site. The first one opens eight weeks out, so you’ll need to plan ahead if you’re hoping to secure a spot for a specific day. If you’re already in Hawaii and planning to visit Pearl Harbor spontaneously, then you can check back 24 hours before the visitation day, as a select number of tickets are released then as well.

When reserving a ticket, you’ll see that tours for the USS Arizona Memorial are offered every 15 minutes. Not only will you need to choose a date in advance, but you’ll also need to pick a time, so keep that in mind if you need to arrange transportation or schedule around flights.

Make Reservations for the Ford Island Bus Tour

The Ford Island Bus Tour is an informative 90-minute led by a National Park Ranger. Although it’s not self-guided, it’s a great experience if you want to have a more in-depth understanding of Pearl Harbor. The tour takes you to a few hidden sites as well as to the USS Utah and USS Oklahoma memorials.

If this sounds like something you want to do, then you’ll need to reserve a spot online . Like the USS Arizona Memorial tickets, there is a $1 reservation fee that needs to be paid during the booking.

The tour runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, leaves only once a day at 3:15 PM, and goes until 5 PM. If you want to do this tour in addition to the USS Arizona Memorial tour, then make sure you do NOT reserve your USS Arizona Memorial tickets during this time frame.

Decide Which Museums to Visit

Besides the USS Arizona Memorial and the Ford Island Bus Tour, all the other sights and attractions at Pearl Harbor can be visited on a whim. If there is time before or after your scheduled tours, then you can visit the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and/or the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.

If you are planning to visit multiple sights during your visit, then it may make financial sense to purchase the Passport to Pearl Harbor . This includes general admission tickets to the following Pearl Harbor Historic Sites:

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

  • Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum
  • USS Battleship Missouri Memorial

It also includes an audio tour of the Visitor Center and the Pearl Harbor Virtual Reality Experience.

Arrive Early

To make the most of your day trip to Pearl Harbor, we strongly suggest that you come early! Of course, your schedule will likely depend on when you make your USS Arizona Memorial Reservation. However, you should still plan on arriving early so you can explore the Visitor Center or museums without feeling too rushed.

Leave Bags at the Hotel

Pearl Harbor is an active military base and is quite strict when it comes to what’s allowed on the grounds. Specifically, it’s prohibited to bring in purses, backpacks, or bags that are larger than 1.5″ X 2.25″ X 5.5″. Instead, make sure all your personal belongings fit inside a small purse or fanny pack.

However, you are allowed to carry your items in a clear plastic bag, similar to what you would bring to a sporting event.

If you have luggage or a larger backpack that you have to bring to Pearl Harbor, you’ll need to check it at the storage facility near the entrance of the Visitor Center.

On Oahu for a cruise? We have everything you need right here: Pick the best time to cruise Hawaii and get to know the cruise ports . Check out our favorite Honolulu shore excursions and find the rest in our Cruise Travel Guide and even more in our Cruise Itinerary .

Watch the Clock

With so much to see, it’s easy to get distracted or lose track of time while you’re hopping from one sight to the other. It’s a good idea to create a rough itinerary of what you want to see and how long you want to spend at each place.

In order to make your reservation times (either for the USS Arizona Memorial or for the Ford Island Bus Tour), make sure you keep an eye on the clock! And give yourself ample time for bathroom breaks or to walk to the meeting point.

What Can You See at Pearl Harbor?

The first time we visited Pearl Harbor, we just saw the USS Arizona Memorial and left! That was a huge mistake, as we later discovered that there are so many interesting museums and sights to explore at Pearl Harbor.

To help give you an idea of what to see, here are detailed descriptions of the main sights and attractions.

USS Arizona Memorial

The iconic white structure marks the spot where the USS Arizona was bombed, killing 1,177 sailors and marines and leading to the country’s involvement in WWII. While the sunken ship remains at the bottom of the ocean, the memorial was constructed over it in 1962 and features a viewpoint over the sunken decks of the ship and a shrine to the lives that were lost.

How to visit Pearl Harbor on your own - USS Arizona

Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater

We recommend that everyone watch the historical film shown in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater before your visit to the main sights. They show a 23-minute long film about the attacks that occurred on December 7th. In addition to the footage from the attacks, you’ll also hear stories from survivors, which makes it an informative yet extremely emotional film.

The film is shown at 15 and 45 past the hour.

Exhibit Galleries

Inside the Visitor Center, you’ll find two exhibit galleries about Pearl Harbor – “Road to War” and “Attack”. With memorabilia, photographs, and artifacts, they provide more information about what happened at Pearl Harbor.

Remembrance Circle

Remembrance Circle is located outside, facing the USS Arizona Memorial. This concrete structure is a memorial that’s dedicated to all the lives (military and civilian) that were lost during the attacks on December 7th. This includes the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Hickam Field, and the Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay.

USS Bowfin Submarine

Located right next to the USS Arizona, the USS Bowfin Submarine is one of the 15 surviving US combat vessels. You can step aboard and walk the deck, visit the interior rooms, and see the torpedoes in the torpedo room!

Tickets to the USS Bowfin Submarine also include entrance to the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.

How to visit Pearl Harbor on your own - USS Bowfin Submarine

Battleship Missouri Memorial

The Battleship Missouri is located on Ford Island. It’s here where the Japanese surrendered to the Allied Powers in September 1945, officially ending WWII. It was decommissioned in 1992 (making it the last active WWII battleship out of any nation in the world), making it one of the most important historical sights to visit in the US.

With your ticket to the USS Missouri, you’ll be able to do a free guided or self-guided tour of the submarine. To get here, you’ll need to ride the free shuttle from the Visitor Center, which takes approximately 10 minutes. You can also visit the USS Missouri as part of the Ford Island Bus Tour.

How to visit Pearl Harbor on your own - Battleship Missouri

The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is also on Ford Island (so you’ll need to take the free shuttle or book the Ford Island Bus Tour to visit). It’s quite a large museum, taking up two massive aircraft hangers.

In hanger 37, you’ll find a detailed museum about island life in the 1940s as well as the Pearl Harbor attacks. There are also restored military aircrafts from both the US and Japanese forces, as well as a flight simulator for those who wish to channel their inner pilots.

Hanger 79 features an impressive collection of vintage bomber jets and figthers that were built after the war. You can also visit the restoration shop, which restores aircrafts that will soon be on display in the museum.

Where is Pearl Harbor Located?

Located on the island of Oahu, Pearl Harbor is roughly 10 miles from Honolulu and 12 miles from Waikiki. If you are typing it into your GPS, make sure to use the following address: 1 Arizona Memorial Place

Getting to Pearl Harbor

There are several different options for getting to Pearl Harbor if you aren’t going with an organized tour company. If you’re coming from Waikiki, expect the drive to take around 30 minutes. You can take a taxi, an Uber or Lyft, or drive yourself (parking at the Visitor Center is $7 a day).

Another option is to take public transportation. The Bus is Honolulu’s transport service, and it’s a cost-effective way to get around the city. Take the #20 or #42 to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center. From Waikiki, the trip will likely take around an hour. Taking the bus from other parts of the island is possible, but it can be quite time-consuming, depending on where you are.

There are also different shuttle services that you can take to Pearl Harbor. Ask your hotel if they provide a shuttle or work with a company that offers trips to and from the site.

Pearl Harbor Sample Itinerary

Having a planned itinerary can help you make the most of your time at Pearl Harbor. Therefore, we wanted to share a full-day option for those who want to tick off the main sights, like the USS Arizona, the museums, and the other battleship memorials.

One thing to note is that we did this itinerary with two young kids, which meant we didn’t spend a lot of time at each spot. However, we did get to see a lot more than most people who visit Pearl Harbor. If you don’t want to cram a lot into your day, then feel free to adjust the following schedule to fit your interests and travel style.

How long does it take to visit Pearl Harbor?

This answer depends on exactly how many sights you want to see during your visit. If you’re short on time, a half-day trip to Pearl Harbor is doable, although don’t expect to see more than two attractions.

Ideally, you’ll want to block out an entire day to visit. That way, you can take your time touring the museums or wandering through the different submarines and memorials.

Here are the operating times for the different attractions at Pearl Harbor:

Pearl Harbor Visitor Center: 7 AM to 5 PM

USS Arizona Memorial: 8 AM to 4 PM

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum: 9 AM to 5 PM

Battleship Missouri Memorial: 8 AM to 4 PM

Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum: 7 AM to 5 PM

Our recent Pearl Harbor Visit Itinerary

8:15 AM: Arrive at Pearl Harbor (remember to come as early as you can!). Spend some time walking around the Visitor Center and checking in for the USS Arizona Memorial tour. They suggest getting to Pearl Harbor an hour or so before your tour is supposed to start. Check-in should also be done 10 minutes before.

9:00 AM: Our USS Arizona Memorial tickets were for 9 AM. Including the boat road, you’ll be at the memorial for about 45 minutes.

10:00 AM: Dock back on land and head to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater to watch the 23-minute film. Afterward, head outside and visit Remembrance Circle.

10:45 AM: Buy tickets for the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (which includes access to the USS Bowfin Submarine). The tours are self-guided, but they do give you a free audio tour if you want to learn more about the grounds and submarine.

11:45 AM: Take the free shuttle ride to Ford Island. By now, you’re probably feeling a bit hungry, so grab lunch at the Ford Island Bistro or mini-mart.

12:45 PM: Buy tickets for the Battleship Missouri Memorial. A free guided tour is included if you want more information about the museum, although we did the self-guided tour and found that to be perfect for our visit!

2:00 PM: Get back on the shuttle and make your way to the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. General admission includes a free audio guide, but they also offer guided tours on a first-come-first-served basis. If you want to have more information about the different aircrafts, it’s definitely worth doing! Make sure you also have time to do the flight simulator (only 150 tickets are given out each day so make sure you ask for one once you arrive). Compared to the other sights, this museum was the most interesting for our kids, as there are a lot of fun things to see in both of the hangers!

4:00: After a long day, we got back on the shuttle towards the Visitor Center and said goodbye to Pearl Harbor!

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor Memorial With Kids

If you’re a parent of young children, there are a few extra things you’ll want to think about before visiting Pearl Harbor with kids. These are some of the tips we found helpful when visiting with our kids:

  • Strollers are allowed, but not everywhere. You can bring a stroller into the main Visitor Center area of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, but if you’re heading to the USS Arizona, you’ll have to leave them before boarding the boat.
  • Infants and Kids need a ticket for the USS Arizona Memorial. Even if they’ll be sitting in your lap for the boat ride, they still need a ticket in hand.
  • No diaper bags! Bring everything you need (like diapers) and put it in a clear bag.
  • Restrooms have changing tables but once you get on the boat to the USS Arizona Memorial, you’ll be without a bathroom for 45 min to 1 hour.
  • Our kids enjoyed the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum the most!

Flag Status in Michigan

The Governor orders U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff throughout Michigan in accordance with Executive Order 2013 -10 . Additionally, flags will be flown at half-staff as proclaimed by the President of the U.S.

Flag Notification Process

Flag honor notifications are issued by the Executive Office of the Governor and are posted in the  Governor's newsroom . To receive email notifications of Flag Honors users can sign up for Flag Honor Alerts via GovDelivery.

The flag may be flown at half-staff by presidential proclamation or by the governor’s order. By order of the president, the U.S. flag should be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the U.S. and the governor of any state or territory as a mark of respect to their memory and accomplishments.

In the event of the death of a present or former official of state government, the governor of that state may proclaim that the U.S. flag be displayed at half-staff. The governor is authorized by the U.S. Flag Code to lower the U.S. flag to half-staff throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters as a mark of respect for the memory and in honor of the service of members of our Armed Forces killed in the line of duty. The governor may also lower the flag to half-staff in the event that a police officer or a firefighter is killed in the line of duty.

The flag is always lowered to half-staff on the following days by Governor Whitmer:

  • Peace Officers Memorial Day: May 15 – half-staff from sunrise to sunset; except when Peace Officers Memorial Day falls on Armed Forces Day (third Saturday in May)
  • Memorial Day: Last Monday in May – the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon, then raised to the top of the staff.
  • Patriot Day: September 11
  • National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day: December 7

When flags are lowered to half-staff, Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.

Proper U.S. flag protocol is to display the flag from sunrise to sunset. However, if properly illuminated, the flag may be displayed at night. The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

The U.S. flag, when displayed at half-staff, should first be hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.

When the U.S. flag is lowered to half-staff, the Michigan flag will also be lowered to half-staff.

Ann Arbor, Michigan

After a long flying hiatus, Cherry returned to the skies last year, inspired by other pilot moms balancing parenting and a dream career. She has since regained her pilot currency, logged over 250 flight hours, passed her FAA written exams, and is currently waiting for her instrument checkride to take place. She plans to pursue her commercial certificate and multiengine rating immediately after.

Beyond flying, Cherry is passionate about advocating for diversity in aviation. She is an active member of the Professional Asian Pilot Association, serving on the Expo and Communication Committee, and is the Scholarship Chair for The Ninety-Nines – Michigan Chapter. Her ultimate goal is to become a pilot for an international operation. She is particularly enthusiastic about mentoring other AAPI women and youth who are pursuing a career in aviation and will take on a more active role in this cause once her flight training is completed.

He now attends Lone Star College in their Professional Pilot program and is ready to take his checkride for his instrument rating and will begin his commercial this summer, thanks to this scholarship. Tracy also plans to continue to volunteer for the various organizations that she has been a part of, including Women in Aviation, Sisters of the Skies, The Ninety-Nines, and others. Jacksonwilson - 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Jackson Wilson | $5,000

Ada, Oklahoma

As a Kindergarten student, Jackson Wilson had to complete an “About Me” project for school. There was a section that asked what they wanted to be when they “grew up.” For him, the answer was always the same: a pilot.

During his senior year at Byng High School in 2022, he took a discovery flight, and it confirmed that the answer was still the same. He is now through his sophomore year at Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he is majoring in Aviation Sciences-Professional Pilot. He earned his Private Pilot License in 2023, and is now awaiting his checkride to add the Instrument Rating. He has over 130 hours of flight time and enjoys flying anytime he gets the opportunity. He is also a member of his local EAA Chapter 1005 in Ada, Oklahoma which gives him a chance to serve his community and learn from the other pilots.

Calebmendenhall - 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Caleb Mendenhall | $5,000

DuPont, Washington

For as long as he can remember, Caleb Mendenhall has always dreamt of becoming an airline pilot. It gave him the desire to become an Aircraft Technician in the United States Air Force, which has taught him with a variety of different skills. Throughout his life, he has ensured that every step forward brings him closer to realizing his dreams in aviation.

He has been qualified on over 100 different maintenance tasks on the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III and continues to learn more every day at work. Being a technician in the Air Force has given him a deeper sense of confidence and a knowledge base that will be crucial to his future endeavors as a pilot.

The military has also provided him with the opportunity to do other volunteer activities, including being in the Honor Guard. He recalls a time where he had the chance to “lay the best to rest,” and honor his fallen brothers-in-arms. “This gave me a deeper sense of respect for my country and my nation, instilling a sense of appreciation for what the United States has given me,” he says.

He looks forward to the future and the challenges that flight school, college courses, and life itself will bring. He believes a challenge is no reason to stop, and will always continue to pursue his passion no matter the obstacle.

Matthewcoffman - 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Matthew Coffman | $5,000

Centennial, Colorado

Matthew Coffman’s goals in aviation are a product of a few different aspects of his life. His father was a pilot and introduced him to the world of military aviation at young age. His love and fascination for aviation continued to grow through high school and college, where he took a few flight lesson that further fueled his desire to become a pilot. Upon graduating college, he was selected to attend Air Force Officer Training School and eventually completed Weapons Systems Officer Training in the F-15E. After eight years in the Air Force flying the Strike Eagle, he made the decision to continue his pursuit of becoming a commercial pilot and left the Air Force to make that dream a reality. He has since completed his private pilot license and instrument rating, and is currently working to obtain his commercial license. His ultimate goal is to become a pilot for legacy airline and continue to inspire and facilitate the creation of future pilots through local and national organizations.

Sofiagoodwin - 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Sofia Goodwin | $5,000

Grass Valley, California

Sofia Goodwin has always dreamed of becoming an airline pilot and is now on a journey to make that a reality. She is a student at San Jose State University (SJSU) majoring in Aviation, Professional Flight. Since starting school, she has been recognized as a President’s Scholar and Dean’s Scholar, in addition to becoming a Historian for the Women in Aviation Club, all while on track to graduate a year early.

Additionally, she is an instrument rated pilot and recently passed her commercial checkride! Her next goal is to earn her CFI so she can start to teach and inspire other aspiring pilots and build flight time. Outside of school, she likes to chase after huge goals like running 50 mile ultra marathons. Overall, her big aviation goal is to make it to the airlines so she can travel, fly and contribute to the movement for greater female representation in the industry.

Alexanderyount - 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Alexander Yount | $5,000

Traverse City, Michigan

Alexander Yount’s path in aviation is very unique. If you had told high school Alex he would be working towards becoming an airline pilot, he would have said you were crazy. When he was 18, he joined the United States Air Force with the intention of becoming a police officer. After scoring well on the entry exam, he was placed into a job titled “In-Flight Refueling Specialist.” This was when he fell in love with flying.

Flash forward a couple of years, five deployments, and over 1500 flight hours, he had become a successful refueling specialist, or “boom” for short. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant and became an instructor for new “booms.” He spent over 60 days on the jet, meeting some amazing people who changed his life forever. Unfortunately, after six years, his time in the skies was over. He had a son on the way and could no longer stomach spending half the year away, flying in dangerous situations like over the Middle East. After separating from the Air Force, he had a tough time figuring out his future path. Then one day, his wife asked, “why not be a pilot?” He immediately rejected the idea. It felt inaccessible to him like it does for so many people. Ultimately, he chose to believe in himself, for his and his family’s future.

Now he is in Northwestern Michigan College’s Aviation program, as a single-engine land private pilot with an instrument rating seeking a commercial license and maintaining a 3.96 GPA. He has 192 hours of total time, and I realizes now that he does not want to simply be a pilot: he wants to be an aviator.

Anaisrodriguez - 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Anais Rodriguez | $1,000

Honolulu, Hawaii

Anais Rodriguez’s passion for aviation blossomed from her desire to travel. After graduating from the University of Hawaii in 2020, during the peak of the pandemic, she found herself grounded at home for almost two years, dreaming of one day being able to travel the world, and somehow get paid to do so. In August of 2022, she took a discovery flight and that was all it took to seal the deal. She fell in love with seeing her beautiful home from a different perspective.

After starting flight lessons in 2023, Anais promptly joined The Ninety-Nines as recommended by her flight instructor. After attending her first couple of meetings, she felt proud to be involved with the local aviation community and knew that this would be an organization she would be part of for years to come. Now, she is an active member of the Aloha chapter, regularly attending meetings, and assisting with planning future aviation events to further perpetuate the mission of The Ninety-Nines and inspire future Hawaii aviators.

Anais recently completed her first cross-country flight which she describes as a surreal experience. “It was amazing to see that all my hard work was paying off,” she explained. She is currently working on finishing up her solo hours and soon, will be preparing for her check-ride. Her long-term goal is to one day be an airline pilot for her dream airline, Hawaiian Airlines. Being born and raised in Hawaii, she would love to continue a career in her home state surrounded by friends and family.

FRANK DER YUEN AVIATION SCHOLARSHIP

The Frank Der Yuen Aviation Scholarship honors the aviation legacy of Frank Der Yuen, an internationally respected aeronautical engineer, airline executive, and consultant. Kelsiehancock - 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Kelsie Hancock | $2,000

Kelsie Hancock is currently a part 61 student at George’s Aviation in Honolulu. She has approximately eight flight hours so far with many more to come! Her ultimate goal is to earn a seat as a commercial pilot. The driving force behind her ambition is to honor the legacy of her late fiancé, Captain Nicholas “Sloppy” Losapio, Naval Aviator and Marine Corps Captain, who perished when his MV-22 Osprey experienced an unrecoverable total mechanical failure in June 2022. Their goal was to fly together, and he had ambitions to fly for the airlines after he fulfilled his service obligation in the Marine Corps. Kelsie decided one of the greatest ways to honor him was to carry the torch he lit in aviation and live fully with purpose and passion in everything she does. In addition to her flying endeavors, she has started a non-profit foundation called The Purple Skies Foundation to support all significant others of service members killed in action or the line of duty. The organization specializes in post aviation mishap support across all DoD service components. Separately from her non-profit, she has been a diligent activist in military aviation safety and has had the privilege of speaking on multiple media outlets on those endeavors. She explains, “I cannot change the past and what happened to my fiancé, but I can be a part of the solution going forward in keeping with and optimizing the standards in both military and civilian aviation.”

Caitlinthomas - 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Caitlin Thomas | $2,000

Caitlin’s career background is in journalism and social media. She graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 2014 and decided to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a professional pilot after getting laid off from a job in 2019. Her flight training journey began in Seattle, WA, and she was able to complete her Private Pilot License after moving home to Hawaii in 2020.

She completed her Instrument Rating in 2023 after meeting her now husband, Christopher, and having their first son, Maverick. With help from Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and many other scholarships, she then obtained her Commercial Pilot License at the beginning of 2024, after finding out she is expecting again. With another son on the way, Caitlin is now studying to become a Certified Flight Instructor.

Caitlin loves being a part of the aviation community in Hawaii and serves as Board Treasurer for the Aloha Chapter of The Ninety-Nines and Board Secretary for the Women in Aviation Aloha Chapter. Her goals include becoming a Captain at a major airline, to know what it feels like to fly an approach into Europe at Christmastime and to be able to create and give scholarships to future aviators.

Caitlin is grateful to be the 2024 recipient of the Frank Der Yuen Aviation Scholarship and knows that she would not be able to chase after this dream without the significant help of scholarships.
