Dream Theater announce European and UK tour
US prog metallers Dream Theater announce new European and UK tour dates
US prog metallers Dream Theater have announced that they will return to Europe for a series of live dates in February in support of last year's A View From The Top Of The World album.
The quintet, who played a trio of UK shows back in April, announced two batches of 2023 European shows on social media this week. The run of dates will kick off at the Palapartenope in Naples on January 23, and climax at London's Eventim Apollo Hammersmith on February 21. Full dates below.
Earlier in the year, keyboard player Jordan Rudess revealed how the start of the Top Of The World tour had felt as audiences returned to shows after being denied live music for so long.
“When we started the American leg, it was a bit scary in the sense that it seemed like a lot of people were going to stay home because of what’s going on in the world,” he said. “What we found was that, after the first week, everybody started to come out. It ended up being really great. What was really interesting about it was that the audience had more energy than usual. Everybody was so excited to be getting back to see live music and seeing Dream Theater after so long."
Tickets for the new dates go on general sale on Friday November 18, with a pre-sale starting at 9am, Wednesday November 16. Get tickets .

Dream Theater: O2 Apollo, Manchester – live photo review
Dream Theater O2 Apollo, Manchester 17th February 2023
American Progressive Metal band Dream Theater embarked on the final run of their Top of The World Tour in support of their 15th studio album. The Manchester O2 Apollo concert was the first of four UK shows, to be followed by Birmingham, Glasgow and London.
After selling 15 million records, over almost 4 decades Dream Theater are in a league of their own in the world of Prog-Metal. They formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1985 and forged a career off the back of live shows in a genre that didn’t have a reliable platform for commercial success. Now they finally have the GRAMMY they most definitely deserve (2022) and continue to perform at a level beyond.
The support band for this tour is the Finnish melodic Metal band Arion. They gained fame in Finland when they performed as teenagers in the Finnish national final for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013. They took to the stage and warmed the crowd up as they started to fill the all-seated gig. Vocalist Lassi Vääränen thanked Dream Theater on stage for a wonderful tour and the fans for allowing their dreams to come true. They looked like they were having a blast on stage and geared the fans up ahead of the arrival of Dream Theater.
Mike Mangini’s drum kit was a stripped back version to what he usually performs on, notably one bass drum, instead of two. This didn’t take away from the performance, but might have had the audience wondering why. Jordan Rudness’s keyboard playing was spectacular, as he moved it around to give everyone a view of what he was doing. James LeBrie’s vocals were beautiful, John Myung played a very focused, trance-like performance as he concentrated on his instrument and John Petrucci wowed with his unmatched playing as he propped his leg up on a metal box to position himself into his playing style.
Setlist
The Alien / 6:00 / Sleeping Giant / Bridges in the Sky / Caught in a Web / Answering the Call / Solitary Shell / About the Crash / Losing Time / Pull Me Under / A View From the Top of the World / The Count of Tuscany

Review & Photography by Ritchie Birnie for MPM
On the penultimate date of the UK tour Dream Theater bring not only a musical masterpiece but a sumptuous visual display that left us all in complete awe.
It has been six long years since the band have graced Scotland’s second city and with the last show being the 25 th anniversary of Images and Words you would have thought it was going to be a tough show to beat but tonight moved past that show with ease.
The scene was set even before the show started with atmospheric music and an animated backdrop of the latest album âA View From the Top of the Worldâ. This was impressive from the off but when you can open your set with a Grammy winning song in âThe Alienâ you are in for a treat. The fact that a song written in 17 8 won and the fact that this is the bands 38 th year in existence to receive this now is testament to the quality of music put out by this group.
We then go a long way back for track two in â6.00â and Mike Mangini and John Petrucci kick things off in metronomic precision before James LaBrie growls at us all. I have to say I normally hate being seated at a gig but this is the way to take in a DT show as you get to sit back and marvel at the brilliance before you and take in the ever changing visuals on the huge projector curtains. I am in total bliss.
It is back to another new song now with âSleeping Giantâ and how good it is to hear these new tracks being played for the first time. This is classic Theater and shows they have not diminished or receded musically over the years. John Rudess and his ever spinning and rising keyboard is at the forefront.
The slow build of âBridges in the Skyâ comes at us next with that flatulent hippo screaming at us all and the DT geeks go crazy. The Armadillio sound is always good but when the choir piece starts this is sublime and the voices bounce all across the serrated room before John comes in and rips our fucking heads off.
On the next track âCaught in a Webâ I am sure a huge amount of ladies(and a good few men) had their eyes closed for the whole outing as the massive screens had incredibly realistic and incredibly large spiders coming at you. I have to admit to this song being one of my favourites so myself and a lot of fans here were screaming along with James.
Another newbie in âAnswering the Callâ and the futuristic number went down a storm before another fan favourite in âSolitary Shellâ makes its Jethro Tull journey to our ears. This is a beautiful song and the enlightening story that unfolded on the screens behind the band wrapped everything together for this song.
This is followed up from another song from âSix Degrees of turbulenceâ in âAbout to Crashâ and although a very different track it is also beloved amongst us and everywhere I look people are freaking out in their seats.
A huge cheer goes up as yet another song from the same album opens up with âLosing Time/Grand Finaleâ. Another slower but beautifully atmospheric number that plays out to very accepting fans.
The closing build up is starting and where better to start that than âImages and Wordsâ and âPull me Underâ. This was the album I discovered this band so it will always have a huge place in my heart and it gets better every time I hear it. Every note is tied down to perfection, for me this is a flawless album and those riffs just suck me in(under?).
It is the title track of latest album next and once again pure perfection and as the band leave the stage we catch a breath and take in what we have seen tonight but we know this is not the end(As James told us the story of the band he went to see who did not do an encore) and to be fair not many bands can throw a near 20 minute song as an encore and not many bands have the talent to wish they had written never mind actually play ââThe Count of Tuscanyâ.
This Prog masterpiece is one hell of a way to end a show.
There is only one Dream Theater, there will only ever be one Dream Theater and that is why they should be on everyone’s bucket list regardless of chosen genre of choice. Prog fans love them, metal fans love them. Musicians love them and all because of the brilliance wrapped up in each and every song and the utter sublimity of a live performance.
Dream Theater never let you down and each and every member are masters of their craft.

Progressive Metal/Rock is what they specialize in and has seen this band grow through success. Dream theater was formed in 1985, Boston Massachusetts, United States of America.
As of 2014 the band consists of members: John Myung - Bassist, John Petrucci - guitarist and backing vocals, James LaBrie - lead singer, Jordan Rudess - keyboardist and composer and the final member Mike Mangini - drummer.
Dream Theater was founded in 1985 while students at Berklee College of Music; three friends Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci and John Myung came together and decided to make music as a collective. They were later joined by members Kevin Moore as keyboardist and Chris Collins as lead vocals as the final and most current line up.
The band were originally called Majesty. While being a part of the band, the founding members found that it was beginning to clash with their studies, thus they decided that there was nothing more they could learn at the college and then decided to dedicate all of their time to music.
In 1986 while touring New York City the band began creating a string of demos which were very popular, they were titled 'The Majesty Demos' and within six months the 1,000 copies they created were completely sold out as their strength grew in the progressive metal scene.
In November 1986 Chris Collins was fired from the band and replaced by Charlie Dominici. The band increased the numbers of shows due to the talent of Charlie and their exposure grew and grew.
Majesty was forced to change their name as a Las Vegas band threatened to take legal action as it was a name owned by them before hand, thus the band went through discussions on what to name themselves, it was only when the father of Mike Portnoy suggested the name 'Dream Theater' due to him owning a small theater, the name liked this name and it became this.
Dream theater have released 12 albums as of 2014 with many of their albums being successful such as 'Images and Words' this album went gold and 'Awake' going platinum in Japan. The band have also gained much attention and have won awards such as Guitarist of the year, this was awarded to John Petrucci in 2007 by 'Total Guitar Paul Gillard'.
The band have done 27 tours and are currently on their 28th tour entitled 'Along For The Ride'.
Live reviews
This show was initially billed as having only Dream Theater in the bill, booked for a theater, sitting down and numbered chairs. It was advertised that Scenes From a Memory would be played in its entirety, along with a regular set.
To my surprise, on the week of the show itself, two opening acts "popped up" out of nowhere, leaving DT with a reduced stage time from 9:30PM to 11PM instead of the planned 6:30PM start time. Needless to say you can only fit 10 DT songs in a 1h30m show.
I bought my tickets specifically BECAUSE they would be playing SFAM in its entirety. Their latest record Distance Over Time might be the best of the last 6 records, but rather than that meaning it's a good record, it just shows how horrible the other 5 are.
After checking setlists in other places, I came to the conclusion they would be playing the exact same set here - heavy on the new material, some deep cuts that they felt like playing and NO fan pleasers. Yes, I mean a DT show without Pull Me Under or any other iconic DT song, unless you consider Peruvian Skies iconic.
Band came on stage 5 minutes late, opening with the new album's opening track. James' vocals were getting cut off - bad wireless mic? Acoustics at the Capitol Gent were great, but it was also hard to hear Mangini, especially the kick and cymbals - I guess setting the cymbals at a 2.2m height makes you lose all the power when hitting them, and having to stretch takes away all the force in the feet for the kick.
Mangini was as bad as always, no groove at all in heavier tunes like Lie and As I Am. He can play the new material competently, but so could a drum machine.
JP, JR and JM were all at the top of their games, and James tried a few interactions with the public. This being a sit down gig, the public's reaction was always very lukewarm, and the PA was so quiet my singing along was disturbing to the people around me.
All in all the whole endeavor felt very unsatisfying, and felt like watching a live recording of the new material without any interaction with the audience.
I have started a petition to claim refunds for the tickets, seeing as it was advertised they would play SFAM in its entirety, which you can sign here: http://chng.it/NVkYfqTXFm

I attended my 7th Dream Theater show at the historic Paramount Theatre in Denver this year. As always, the show left me feeling like I had just attended a clinic for each instrument played and at the same time I wanted more. The mark of a good show is leaving your audience with these feelings and Dream Theater did not disappoint then, nor have they ever. The music, for all its over-the-top soaring symphonic bombacity, is extremely easy to listen to (provided you are smart and wear hearing protection). My girlfriend, who is not a fan of their style of music, was very impressed by the show. Positives for this show were: 1) The new record is a lot more accessible to the casual fan and they played quite a few new songs. They were well rehearsed and included many impressive visuals. 2) The band were very receptive to the crowd and recognized very early on the "aeromatic" quality of the venue. 3) It is worth sticking around for the intermision. They played a collection of hilarious fan-submitted videos, most of which only a real DT fan would understand. 4) Awake is one of my favorite DT records, and they paid tribute to it by starting the second half of the show with a string of songs from the record. They blew the roof off the joint with The Mirror/Lie. 5) The whole show showcased their awesome instrumental talents and, suprisingly, James Labrie was in very good voice. On a lot of their live recordings, his voice comes off reedy and out of tune. Well done, James. The only negative was the venue itself. I've seen DT in places that could use a good wrecking ball taken to them and their music demands good acoustics. While the Paramount Theatre may be "historic," it is a bit of a dump. I had excellent seats and thorougly enjoyed the show, but would have enjoyed it a lot more in a quality venue. Perhaps the Paramount should transpose the "re" at the end of Theatre and not fool us into thinking it is an opera house. Overall, if I were to score the show on a 1 to 10 scale, I'd give it an 8-1/2, not a 10, just because of the venue.

Dream Theater @ The Fox Theater-Oakland, CA
8:00 PM - 11-00 PM (That's right ;)
Super pumped for the show... Arrived two hours early, found indoor parking (Thank God), had a bite to eat right next door to the Fox and then got in line...
Every kind of music fan was represented at the show. Some of the t-shirts I saw standing in line:
Yanni (wtf?)~Van Halen~Rush~Haken~Judas Priest~ Opeth~Between the Buried and Me~Prince~Jimi Hendrix~The Beatles~Tom Petty~Joe Satriani~Ayreon-Eric Clapton~Fates Warning~Iron Maiden~Dio~Black Sabbath~The Eagles~~~ Just to name a few...
I saw little kids, teenagers, 20 somethings, 30 somethings, 40 somethings, 50 somethings (That's me ;), all the way up to VERY OLD grandmas... (Oddly enough, I didn't see any grandpas ???)
Got into our seats at about 7:30 PM... They were playing some good hard rock over the PA---Rush~Iron Maiden~Metallica~~~ THEN.... Wait for it... Neil Diamond :O (Holy Cow)
Then the show started... It was so freaking loud..I mean LOUD (brain piercing LOUD)..Seriously, the loudest show I've ever been to (over 100)!!! TOO LOUD..
The musicianship was unparalleled... I wish I could say the same for James' voice--- He seemed to be flat most of the night and he was not even attempting to hit the high notes. Those days are gone :(
Nevertheless, it was FANTASTIC!!!! Played a great mix of songs before their first 20 minute break.. Came back with I&W in all its glory (albeit, tempered by James' obviously deteriorated vocal range)...
The encore was "A Change Of Seasons"... So AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so glad I went... Big News too... James said they will be recording a new album in 2018 with a release date sometime in 2019, followed by another tour!!
If you get the opportunity to see them on the I&W and Beyond tour, DO IT! You won't be sorry... Peace~
This is the 5th time I see Dream Theater in concert. At Cirkus in Stockholm, on March 1 2016, the band performed all songs from the new double CD "The Astonishing". Very brave of a rock band to build a tour on new songs without even well known songs as encores. But this is a unique band and I really admire them for doing this. The music and the performance was just great. Listening to 34 new songs take some time to get to know. On stage the songs gave the whole picture in an easier way. The background film and stage light gave the concert another dimension. Just incredible! The guys in Dream Theater manage to perform complex songs with ease and a smile on their faces! The communication within the band and with the audience is something other rock bands could learn from. This is entertainment but everyone is treated with respect and the fun side never falls into any kind of sillyness. No matter what songs are played I know I will be satisfied because of the professionalism this band show us.
I look forward the next time in Sweden. Hey, did I mention that the Meet & Greet was the best I have experienced? The arrangement was well planned. We were given good information, the meeting with the musicians was great, no hurry, autographs, merchandise and photos that turned out marvellous. Well worth paying for.
Massachusetts progressive metal outfit Dream Theater is known for a rousing live performance and unmatched dedication to the touring schedule. The group has been known on the circuit since the late 80s and it appears they are getting better with age as everything seems to be performed with even more effort and commitment with every single show.
They recognise there are fans here who have followed their career from the very beginning and reward them with performances of older tracks such as 'Lifting Shadows Off a Dream' and 'The Mirror'. The majority do seem to know the material though and the choruses are sang back in aggressive tones whilst the audience continues to surge and move in time with the thumping drum beats. The instrumental solos demonstrated could make your head spin as these five musicians are insanely talented. They leave the crowd with a feeling of euphoria as they have only seen all their favourite tracks performed, but also a real impressive metal live show. There is a triumphant moment as the five musicians walk to the front of stage following 'Finally Free' to enjoy the final rapturous applause.
When it was announced that Dream Theater will perform in Manila, I was not able to contain my excitement. I said that I will finally see Dream Theater by flesh. Come July 12th, pre-sale of tickets began. I bought the best package money can buy (Platinum VIP M&G). After I bought the package straight from the band's website (provided by you guys), I was not able to sleep properly that day due to excitement. At the meet and greet session, I was so excited and nervous that I did not properly compose what I'm going to say to Dream Theater; I just proceeded with greetings and small talk. When the show was about to begin, I was already standing for 4 hours. I asked myself if I can endure 3 more hours standing while watching Dream Theater rock Kia Theatre. When they finally showed up, the pain in my feet and legs vanished, as if there was 'magic'. They did not disappoint. All of us were enthusiastic. We sang with Dream Theater. Though I feel the after-effects of standing for 7+ hours when the show ended, it did not matter to me. 'The best' would still be an understatement to describe my experience watching Dream Theater.
Saturday 11 January 2020 -- AFAS Live
The Distance Over Time Tour
After a while, I still pretty clearly remember what a hopeless failure was the concert.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't fault of the musicians and I was ready to bear La Brie's recent whine. I had been to them before, so I thought it was totally worth it. Alas :-(
We sat right behind FOH desk, in a mid-to-top row. I had "music" ear buds that you can by at AFAS. Long story short, with the latter or without, guitar + bass + drums ~ already beyond comprehensible mix. Add heavily processed keys or high-reverbed vocals to the mix, or worse both, it went to a loud muddy mess that had few resemblance to Dream Theater music. Very close to the sound of a crappy local high-gain metal band in a concrete basement club. Seriously, even songs that I listened to tens of times like A Nightmare to Remember, I couldn't navigate. Total waste of money and time. Would've left after first break if I was alone.
Let me start this off with I am a huge Dream Theater fan and have all their Lps and have seen them 11 times since their start, The Astonishing was anything but that, almost every song started with a slow piano intro and then lots of vocal, I missed the old DT when James would walk off stage for 20 minutes and the boys could jam, He did leave the stage but would come back after only a few minutes, there was only one real guitar solo in the whole set and even though they all play as masters they never got up to any peek. Mikes drumming was lame and unimpressive performance. My gilrfriend slept through most of the show, But I understand she is not a fan and the show was BORING ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!
PS This was my Last DT show.
Dream Theater were amazing, the entire show was a spectacle with the graphics and the nomacs in the background and of course the amazing talent of John Petrucci and the rest of the gang. Mike Mangini's drum set was an awe to look at and the complex playing of everyone in the band showed a great degree of talent and musicianship from everyone in the band. Jordan Rudness's Keyboard/Piano playing was breathtaking and beautiful. Overall a stunning performance. James LaBrie is an amazing vocalist and John Myung is a wonder when he plays the bass. Such as great experience.
HOWEVER, that is the last time I attend a show at Portland's Merrill Auditorium. I didn't like having to sit down for most of the show, not a good venue for a band like Dream Theater.
Astonishing live DT in Nuremberg Germany:
It was perfect like listening the original record.
A negative thing, it was not allowed to take pictures or videos, and of course the German security people were unpolite while controlling it.
We felt like LaBrie was not very happy with the public, but it was not possible to know all the songs because it was a 100% new disc concert.
Interaction between the band and public almost zero, except with Petrucci who always tried to connect with us.
No classics in the concert, just 100% astonishing. Too long just with new ballads and songs
A gift of music, new beginning and new world were the best songs.
In general a good concert as expected but it would be better to play old songs as well.

12 Pop Stars Who Could Replace Katy Perry on 'American Idol'
K aty Perry officially exited "American Idol" after last month's Season 22 finale, leaving fans wondering who will fill the "Never Really Over" pop star's seat.
The "Teenage Dream" singer joined the show as a judge alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie in 2018 for the reboot on ABC, following its original 15-season run on Fox. After seven seasons leading the judging trio, viewers are in store for a shakeup when Season 23 returns in 2025.
While there are a few stars gunning for a seat on the panel, TheWrap has put together a list of who we trust to be able to judge a singing competition.
Read below to see who could potentially replace Katy Perry on "American Idol":
Meghan Trainor
The "All About That Bass" singer has not been shy about vying for a chance at the judging seat. In fact, she said she's begging for the opportunity to work on her "favorite show" and have "her dream job." Plus, the pop star has some judging experience, getting her start on "The Four: Battle for Stardom" in 2018 and later on "The Voice UK" in 2020. She also mentored the most recent season's Top 12 as they tackled Billboard No. 1 hits and was a guest judge on Season 8 of "Australian Idol" in 2023.
The "Idol" Season 3 winner could be an ideal choice for the judging slot. One of the more successful names to come out of the franchise, Fantasia is back in the public eye following her Oscar-nominated performance in the 2023 musical adaptation of "The Color Purple," as well as her 2024 Grammy Awards performance. The star even returned to the "Idol" stage this past season to speak to the Season 22 finalists on the 20th anniversary of her win.
Carrie Underwood
Another "Idol" success could potentially take a seat on the other side of the judging table. The Season 4 winner released her last album "Denim and Rhinestones" in 2022, leading up to her Stagecoach headlining performance.
Maren Morris
The Grammy Award winner was rejected from "American Idol" after her audition as a teenager, but has since said she sees it as " poetic justice " when people audition with her songs on the show. "I just get the check in the mail," she said. The star, who recently announced her split from country music, has guest judged on an episode of "Rupaul's Drag Race," but never on a singing competition show.
The "Raise Your Glass" singer is admittedly hesitant about joining the judging table. "I don't like hurting people's feelings," she said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight . "I like my day job." Either way, Pink is set to continue her international tour this fall.
Miley Cyrus
The recent first-time Grammy winner has said that tour life is not for her. So why not the judging panel? The star known for her covers could easily help mentor the next big thing in music. Plus, the "Flowers" singer was a guest judge on the show back in 2010.
Jennifer Hudson
Though not an "Idol" winner, the "Dreamgirls" star is one of the biggest names to come out of the competition show. Hudson placed 7th on Fantasia's season in 2004, but credits the show for her success 20 years later. The EGOT recipient even hosts her own talk show nowadays, so she'd be a natural.
Jennifer Lopez
JLo has been everywhere recently, but could her canceled tour dates bring her back to the "Idol" judging table? The "On the Floor" singer was a judge on Seasons 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15, discovering artists like Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips. She said in a May interview with Jimmy Kimmel that she "feels like she did it" already, but this was before her schedule opened up. For now, her answer remains, "Not this year, but maybe next year."
Jordin Sparks
The youngest winner in "Idol" history is "putting her name in the hat" to fill Perry's seat. The "No Air" singer, who won the sixth season of the reality show at 17, wants to help the next generation find their voice. Sparks released a Christmas EP last December, but does not have any upcoming projects announced.

When we entered the studio in the Fall of 2020 to begin writing, it was in the heart of the pandemic. We really weren't sure when the album would be coming out or when we'd be able to play live again. This freed us up to just 'go for it' and see what happens. The first song we wrote was 'The Alien' which set the tone for the album.
