Costuming - TOS Boots

Guys, Does anyone know a supplier for screen accurate TOS boots, or someone selling something reasonably similar? Cheers

SchwEnt

SchwEnt Fleet Captain Fleet Captain

Don't know of a supplier. But I've seen many screencaps and there is more than one type of TOS boot. Like the props, there were "hero" boots and other more practical versions. Some boots had laces, others without. Some apparently for use on set, other boots for use when outdoors on location shooting. So check which type you'd prefer.
Hey thanks SchwEnt, I didn't know there were lace up versions. This is, I suppose, the hero pair? From Wink of an Eye , just after Kirk ticks off hyper-accelerated-aliensex from his bucket list. As for what type I'm after, just something, anything really, that will do justice to my amazing ANOVOS TOS uniform, and is practical enough to survive a few conventions without breaking any ankles on its possibly intoxicated wearer. Something reasonably close to what we saw on screen will be fine. I am thinking about visiting some women's shoe shops. Explaining what I am after should prove interesting.
Right. The lace-ups I recall seeing on Kirk during one of his knockdown fights. I suppose the lace-ups were used so as not to mess up the spiffier standard TOS boots. I can't recall which eps screencaps I saw. One of Kirk's brawls, damned if I can't remember.

For what it’s worth, our principal cast on Star Trek Phase II is outfitted mostly with custom made TOS boots from Willies Shoe Service in Hollywood, California. Willies has made all the Star Trek boots for Paramount starting with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. They continue to make boots if Trekkies are willing to buy them. Expect to pay a nice sum: my boots made by Willie three or four years ago cost about $700. I don’t know what they are running now; I read that they are about $800 now. The good news is that that price is per pair, not per shoe. They can and will make any style—the flatter heel style of the third season, the cool Cuban heel from the first season--whatever you want. The earliest earliest Desilu TOS boots were bought off the shelf. But early in the first season, they began to be produced by Western Costume. In what will likely be frustrating to you, a year or two ago, Star Trek Phase II entered into a project with Western Costume to have a whole bunch of TOS boots made using the original templates for “a song.” I think the price was a mere $300 if I recall. An order of a certain number had to be guaranteed by us before Western Costume would agree to the deal. In the end, we were just able to scare up enough people willing to pop for the boots. These weren’t custom made, exactly. They were made in a variety of fairly standard sizes. I haven’t heard of any plans to repeat this project. Other options you have that are really close are Motorcowboy, Caboots, and Beatware. Lastly, sometimes people sell off their TOS boots on ebay. You might get lucky there. The only lace-ups I’ve seen are Shatner’s as he battles the Gorn and in “Tomorrow Is Yesterday” as he gets into a scuffle at the airbase. So they look to be pressed into service when he has to do stunts. I haven’t checked other TOS fights to see if he wears them in other episodes. SchwEnt said: ↑ Right. Shatner wore lace-up boxer boots for his location scenes in "Arena." I think this was because the episode before last was "Shore Leave," in which his big location fight with Finnegan destroyed a pair of the expensive hero boots. And the show wasn't about to do that again, not on their budget. [Edit: I didn't recall the lace-ups in "Tomorrow is Yesterday." I'll bet Greg has observed TOS more closely than anyone in the world.] When I was a kid, TOS was my principal point of reference in life for what looked cool. Back then I would have given anything for a pair of Star Trek boots, but not with the "Cuban" heel you see on early Spock and McCoy. That type of angled heel originated with cowboys who needed to keep their feet in the stirrups. Today I'm over it and would not consider laying out $800 for a pair of boots that I'd have to baby and never scuff. The grownup Zap wants to pay less for footwear that babies him and can go through snow and rain.
GSchnitzer thanks for the plethora of options. May the Great Bird of the Galaxy bless your planet . If ever there is another run of the authentic ones with Western Costuming and you need numbers, please count me in. If I can't find something locally, you've given me plenty of choices. Thanks again.
I'll keep you posted if Western Costume does another boot run. In the meantime, here are Kirk's lace-ups from "Tomorrow Is Yesterday:" Botany Bay said: ↑ GSchnitzer thanks for the plethora of options. May the Great Bird of the Galaxy bless your planet . Go girl boots. Say you're shopping for pirate boots. They won't believe you but who cares. Real good girl boots are about $300 but you can shop at Target (Australia) for < $100 and you can try them on without the aid of a shop assistant.
Commish , I took your advice and trawled every women's shoe department in Sydney, but sadly my feet are too wide. It was a good idea, there were so many that would have been perfect, but my fat feet made it impossible in even the biggest sizes. Was worth it for some of the reactions I got from people when they asked what I was looking for, though I found an old fashioned bootmaker (there is one left in the whole city) who was intrigued, but he wanted $2,000 I had almost given up, then I started googling for "boots" rather than "Star Trek boots", and found something called the "Funtasma Captain - 100". Only $45 + $15 shipping. Looks pretty close to GSchnitzer 's pic, and the price is right for something I'm going to wear a couple of times a year max. Thanks all for the suggestions
Congratulations. Let us know how they go when you get them. I'm interested in case I ever need a pair and the price seems very good.

Something that should be noted about the boots Shatner is wearing in the first pic; It is very hard to see in that pic, but the hero boots had a zipper up the inside that was ignored as "such fasteners no longer exist", much the way the zippers on the tunics were ignored. One has to look closely to see them, but they are there.

I have a pair of the costume boots and they are a good, cheaper alternative. I just with the toes were pointier like the series boots generally were.

That is NOT what they look like. Like most 60's boots they had the more stylish cuban heel. The screen grab is from "What Are Little Girls Made Of?"

I think I read somewhere that the heels disappeared after season 1. Nice sharp pic of the boots spockboy . Is that Shatner? Mario they look pretty close. You could switch from biker to trekker easily. FormerLurker the Funtasma Captains have the zipper you're talking about.
There's a pic from the set of "What are Little Girls..." that shows Shatner in uniform but wearing his comfy loafers when not filming a scene. That should tell us something about what it's like to walk around in those boots all day, even his custom-made hero pair.

Fluevog x Star Trek Starfleet boot available to pre-order April 8-10th!

Designed to boldly go where no one has gone before, John’s Starfleet boot will soon be seen outfitting the Starfleet officers in the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Extensions of John’s Manifold Family, the boots feature soft leather and elastic uppers with a leather harness and a gunmetal finished Star Trek delta insignia at the ankle.

From April 8-10th, you can pre-order the boots exclusively at Star Trek: Mission Chicago and at Fluevog.com.

The Original Star Trek uniform is so iconic including those Cuban style boots! It was an honor to team up with Fluevog and give the boots an updated look. The stretchy back makes fitting our actors easy and the rubber soles are shock absorbent which is handy on the concrete studio floors. The leather is soft yet durable. We have had countless running and action sequences and the Fluevog boots never fail. Such quality craftsmanship! They look futuristic and edgy and are my favorite part of the uniform. Such a strong silhouette! —  Bernadette Croft, Costume Designer, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The Starfleet boot will officially be available later this year as part of John’s Fall/Winter ’22 collection. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres Thursday, May 5, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., Latin America, Australia and the Nordics. The series will air on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave in Canada with additional international availability to be announced at a later date.

Pre-Order Update #1 (August 8, 2022): Good news! Pre-orders of The Starfleet boot will soon be making their way to customers! We expect to ship orders out later this month (August 15th in North America and Europe, August 19th in Australia) and will email you prior to ship-out with an updated ETA and a request to confirm your address – be sure to keep an eye on your inbox and junk folder!

Pre-Order Update #2 (August 15, 2022): European pre-orders have experienced a slight delay, but customers can still expect to embark on their first mission soon! The Starfleet boots will begin shipping out to European customers on Monday, August 22nd.

We appreciate your patience and apologize for the delay in getting your Starfleet boots to you. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your order, please contact the processing store listed in your confirmation email or reach out via our contact form.

Apologies if this has been asked before. I am looking for a pair of these. I know about Motor Cowboys offerings - http://www.motorcowboy.com/c=GxoV1Yz4S3vbzfcMfeJKLZ5YZ/category/startrekboots/ Are these the best option out there for quality- accuracy- price? Has anyone bought them and have a review?? The season one versions look a bit off? Am I wrong. Thanks!

I read quite a lot about this on TREK boards when I was preparing to do a TOS Spock uniform. I'm sure people will correct me if I'm wrong. It seems folks are pretty much in agreement that only Kirk had the higher Cuban heels pictured on the Motorcowboy example. Everyone else had lower "standard" heels. Note that his photo example is of Kirk on the transporter. Also, many people seem to agree that different seasons had slightly differently taped toes. I seem to recall season one was more pointy. In my opinion, the leather on the Motorcowboy pair isn't shiny enough compared with the original boots. I think the matte nature of the leather also makes them look more charcoal grey than black, but it may simply be the photo. Just my 2 cents. I'm sure more profoundly educated people will chime in. $350 is a reasonable price for completely custom made shoes. Rick

It's my understanding that MC's TOS boot offerings are inaccurate and overpriced, but good TOS boots are something of a Holy Grail of Trek costuming, so you'll be hard pressed to find better. Dewback Wing would probably be your best bet for a straight answer.

Thanks Neon Sentry

The originals were made from "glove leather" - very thin. I used to have some real good pics from auctions of the boots - I'll see if I can hunt them down.

That would be great Jet Beetle

The two different versions, or Protos, that Moto-boots has pictured were done for Phase -pistol and I. I never went through and bought them though because they were still inaccurate and I got in on a run of boots that were made by the original maker. I'm sure Karl will chime in and post some Pics!

Would you care to comment on what the inaccuracies were? Rick

Hah, phase, I was watching Trek and I specifically screen capped that shot of Kirk carrying Chekov for reference. :lol Oh, small question slightly related, in 'What Are Little Girls Made Of?', when Kirk is slipping off of the edge of the chasm, are the close-ups of the regular boots or stunt boots?

willies or durans thats it. Willies want to much for them imo and the shop is now run by somebody else and has moved so the lineage to the show is gone imo. Durans can do them and cheap too I see you are in L.A. check both of them out

Star Trek Icons: The Russian Revolution of Pavel Chekov

Ensign chekov dazzles the uninformed as an expert in russian history.

custom made star trek shoes

The Garden of Eden was just outside Moscow. A very nice place. It must have made Adam and Eve very sad to leave. - Ensign Chekov from The Apple

Ensign Pavel Chekov ( Walter Koenig ) knows his Russian history so thoroughly, he gives an impromptu course on the complex subject to anyone within earshot. The ever youthful Enterprise officer sporting a signature page boy cut will tell you his Russian culture helped birth practically every important device or concept we regularly employ in our daily lives. Genial, yet ultimately convincing propaganda? Or is Captain Kirk’s navigator simply pranking an entire galaxy with his tongue firmly in cheek?

The Russians Always Did It First

The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming! is a 1966 American movie comedy. Released in movie theaters the same year as Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek bowed on television, the Golden Globe winner and multi Oscar nominated flick, told the tale of a grounded Russian submarine off a New England island. The character of Chekov wouldn’t be seen mixing it up with the Enterprise crew until the following year, but this couldn’t have been a more playful introduction to the character, however disconnected and coincidental. Indeed, the Russian were coming, and now the Russians were here on a weekly American TV series.

The documented reason Gene Roddenberry created Ensign Chekov was to appeal to both a younger viewer demographic, and the fact that Russia, in space race reality, eclipsed America in outer space exploration. Initially, Roddenberry envisioned his new character as a dapper Englishman, however, when some Russians complained about the cultural snub, Trek’s Great Bird of The Galaxy creator gave the character a Russian name and accent.

Did the Russians really force Roddenberry’s hand into creating Ensign Chekov?

Others dispute the Russian interference claim, the most authentically authoritative being Koenig himself, who says there was no such Russian complaint. Roddenberry merely wanted to honor Russia’s historic achievement as beating all other countries in space exploration.

custom made star trek shoes

The Quantum Quotable Chekov

His quotes are not only fun and memorable, but spoken in his thick Russian accent, they were perhaps even funnier. During the hunt for the assassin of the Federation friendly Chancellor Gorkon ( David Warner ) in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , Chekov drops this beauty of a bomb on a suspect.

custom made star trek shoes

“Perhaps you have heard Russian epic of Cinderella? If shoe fits, wear it!“

Ultimately, the shoe does not fit the suspect at all, and Chekov comes off looking less and less like the Russian Sherlock Holmes.

One of my all time favorite Chekov quotes comes from the original series episode, The Deadly Years. In the search for an antidote to the accelerated aging plaguing crewmembers, Chekov is probed and sampled in every possible way.

“Give us some more blood, Chekov. The needle won’t hurt, Chekov. Take off your shirt, Chekov. Roll over, Chekov. Breathe deeply, Chekov. Blood sample, Chekov. Marrow sample, Chekov. Skin sample, Chekov…. IF…if I live long enough, I’m going to run out of samples!”

Star Trek’s now legendary adventures brought together a diverse group to explore the unknown like nothing seen on TV before. They united as a cohesive unit, celebrating a sharp merging of drama and comedy to create something truly new within the thrilling sandbox which Gene Roddenberry had ingeniously invented. Pavel Chekov’s unique blend of cultural representation coupled with actor Walter Koenig’s wonderful performance ensures this dependable, often amusing character’s place in Trek’s perennial pop culture realm.
